Caulfield continue their late season surge
Where did the time go? There are now only 4 weeks left in the U19 Premier home and away season.
The momentum shift from the Caulfield Grammarians has taken the competition by storm. They defeated the top placed St Kevin’s in a superb contest at T H King Oval on Saturday. St Kevin’s remain one game clear but have endured a challenging few weeks. Old Xaverians, St Bedes/ Mentone, and Caulfield round out the top four heading into round 15.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers def. St Bernards by 107 points.
Another superb showing by the Tigers who have been one of the more consistent sides of U19 Premier in 2023. They simply demolished the struggling St Bernards under lights last Friday evening. SBMT showcased their forward talent with 19 goals registered on the scoresheet. St Bernards were only able to convert 3 majors for the duration of the contest.
St Bedes and Caulfield remain the ‘bolters’ of the U19 Premier section. Both have been able to capture remarkable form on the eve of finals. SBMT’s dynamic forward line continues to impress. as J. Harding and H. Gleeson combined for 8 majors. Whilst O. Moodie and M. Sullivan continue to serve as a headache for opposition defenders.
St Bernards will be relegated at the conclusion of the 2023 season. Though this may be viewed as a negative by some, it will give the team and opportunity to reload and reassess for next season. T. Lowrie was best afield for St Bernards, with a terrific individual season under his belt.
SBMT travel across the bridge to face Williamstown next week. St Bernards will face Old Xavierians at home.
Old Brighton def by. Williamtown CYMS by 5 points.
Williamstown prevailed in a windy and low scoring affair at Brighton Beach Oval last Saturday. Old Brighton was on the wrong side of the tug of war but showed plenty of positive signs.
The CYs now sit sixth on the ladder and are desperate for a finals berth in 2023. They have a reasonably tough run home but are a more than capable finals outfit. N. Sayers, A. Williams, A. Fernandes, S. Sarandopoulos, F. Lodge & K. Sullivan were all outstanding in a tough, back-and-forth contest.
Finals may now be just out of reach for Old Brighton. They started the year with high hopes but have fatigued over the course of 14 weeks. They’ll be disappointed how this season has progressed but were admirable against the CYs. J. Campigli had another stellar outing, a shining light for Old Brighton’s future.
Old Brighton faces an in-form Caulfield this weekend. The CYs host SBMT at home.
Old Xaverians def. Old Scotch by 39 points.
Xavier has secured a comprehensive win on the eve of finals. They have cemented themselves in the second position and are primed for a successful finals appearance. Old Scotch are unlikely to play finals at the conclusion of this season but are also victims of such a competitive section.
A solid team outing by the Xavs will instil their confidence in the pursuit of a premiership. They have depth across every line and utilised it well against Scotch. W. MacIsaac slotted 5 in a colossal display.
The eighth placed Scotch will be disappointed to find themselves in their current position. They are a talented outfit who has showed spurts of talent and skill throughout the season. They are a team to keep your eye on next season. W. Hucker, J. Harker, N. Glenn, O. Iser, C. Ferguson & M. Mayes played their best in a tough afternoon for Old Scotch.
Old Xavierians will look to notch up another win against St Bernards in Round 15, while Old Scotch will clash with Uni Blues.
University Blues def. De La Salle by 77 points.
A win over De La Salle makes the race to finals even more interesting, with 5th, 6 th and 7th on the ladder, all just 1 win outside a coveted top 4 position. A cohesive Uni kept their opponent to just 3 goals the entire afternoon. The Uni Blues now sit in fifth, clawing their way to finals. Uni’s spread and ball use across Melbourne University Oval was elite. De La simply struggled to keep up. This performance proved the Uni Blues is a finals standard team. A. Dowsley continued his monster season with 4 majors.
De La Salle is another team feeling the effects of a long and hard season. They only registered 7 scoring shots for the duration of the contest, 6 of which came in the second half. A. Liakakos, S. Cross, J. Pickles, E. Mcmahon, L. Liakakos, H. Mounas were all commendable in a losing side. De La Salle will face St Kevin’s this weekend. Uni will look to knock off Old Scotch.
St Kevin’s def by. Caulfield Grammarians by 36 points.
The Caulfield Grammarians are on a roll. They now sit in fourth after an impressive few weeks. On the other hand, SKOB have shown some worrying signs after dropping some important games. However, their dominant start to the season has them still sitting comfortably on top, one game clear of second.
A flat first half from SKOB was costly. They conceded 3 goals and couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities. They’ll look to reassess ahead of next week. The ever-consistent N. Tonge, M. Adams, J. Romanin, H. Kirkwood, O. Gill and B. Ball did all they could to try lift the standard for SKOB.
Caulfield have peaked at the right time. Their team is working in unison, creating numerous scoring shots up forward. There were 9 goal kickers in total, signs of an unselfish and discipline team. W. Brown slotted 3 majors.
Caulfield will look to continue their streak against Old Brighton in round 15. SKOB will play De La Salle away.
