As chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 50th Inter IIT Sports Meet I feel it is a privilege for IIT Bombay to host the Golden Jubilee edition of the event that has established a harmonious bond among all the IITs over the years.

I cannot sufficiently emphasize the importance of sports and physical activity in the life of a student over and above his or her academic commitments. The IITs have striven to provide their students with ample infrastructural facilities and a variety of opportunities and platforms to pursue their passion for sports. The Inter IIT Sports Meet is an excellent example of the realization of this very ideal, being an annual event that promotes harmony, sportsmanship and team spirit. It is an honour for me to preside over the proceedings of such an esteemed tournament, which year after year allows talented athletes to flourish in various sports, some of whom perform at levels at par with the national records. From the very day that IIT Bombay was made aware of its responsibility to conduct the Golden Jubilee Meet, a team of faculty, sports officers, and staff have been involved in putting up a show worthy of the stature of the event. Construction of several new sports facilities has been carried out along with extensive revamping of the existing sports facilities over the past year to ensure that the infrastructure is up to the mark. A student organizing committee that now stands 150 strong has been working as one with the team, bringing in their own enthusiasm and initiative to the organization. The Aquatics leg of the Meet was already an affirmation of their concerted effort, and I have no doubt that they will bring the same degree of success to the main session of the Golden Jubilee edition of the Meet. I welcome all guests to the campus and hope they have a splendid time at IIT Bombay and leave with the fondest of memories. I wish all the sports officers and coaches successful realization of their efforts and each and every participant luck in his or her respective game during the 8 days of Inter IIT Sports Meet. May the best IIT emerge triumphant holding the General Championship Trophy.

I am happy to learn that IIT Bombay is hosting the 50th Inter IIT Sports meet during December 12-19, 2014. The Inter IIT sports meet is an excellent opportunity for students of all IITs to come together to interact, exchange experiences and pit their sports skills against each other. I strongly believe that the development of young people embraces many more aspects beyond their academic development. The Inter IIT sports meet helps to advance the self-esteem of athletes, their pride of self and institute, and in general instils a high sense of discipline, sportsmanship, healthy competition, sacrifice and appreciation of others, among other things. It gives me immense pleasure to congratulate IIT Bombay, one of the oldest IIT to host “The Golden Jubilee Year” of this special event. Starting from 1961 with only five IITs, now the family has been extended to 16 IITs and the competition has evolved with time. As we proudly celebrate 50 years of the Inter IIT Sports meet, I encourage all the 16 IITs to come together in the true spirit of sports. Evolving and moving ahead with time is the philosophy of IIT Roorkee. We wish for a better competitive spirit, better teamwork and finally a better India. Let us all make this big event a huge success and IIT Roorkee will extend its full cooperation to IIT Bombay. Competition is an important part of this sports meet and I cheer all the participants and encourage them to compete not only to win but also true to the spirit of true sportsmanship. The emphasis of such meets is primarily learning – learning about yourself, about your sport, and about working together as a team. I am delighted to know that IIT Bombay is hosting the 50th Inter IIT Sports meet in December 2014. This is a very special occasion as it marks the Golden Jubilee of the Inter IIT sports meet. I am glad to know that the institute will also be holding the 22nd Inter IIT Staff Sports meet. IITs not only provide excellent teaching and research environment, they also provide plentiful opportunities for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Sports are good for mind, body and spirit. Exercising is a natural way to loosen up and let go of stress. Sports not only improve physical ability and skills, they provide entertainment to participants. Furthermore, team sports are good for learning discipline, dedication, and leadership among many other traits.

It gives me immense pleasure to acknowledge the participants of the 50th Inter IIT meet 2014 being held at IIT Bombay during 12-19th December, 2014. Writing message for souvenir to IIT community on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee meet is itself a delight. IIT Patna has been participating in the Inter IIT Sports meet since 2009 and has enjoyed each and every moment of it. Being an IITian, I feel that the culture of such meet has to be continued and should be spread even further as per the necessity of society and country. As we know, sports gives us joy, but we should not neglect the moral values and discipline which are the salient features of it. There are institutes that have specialized courses in various sports. IITs being primary technical institutes encourages participation of students in sports activities due to the team spirit, soft skills and harmony of body and mind achieved from participation in sports. We have to utilize this platform to build up the strong bond of IIT culture so that its glory is maintained. I feel proud to say that IITians are famous worldwide not only for their engineering and research expertise but also for their energetic and can do attitude. I am just motivating you to keep yourself in the right direction in each and every endeavour and sports will surely assist you in doing so because sports do not just build character, they reveal it. With these words, I wish all the participants of the 50th Inter IIT Meet all the very best and urge them to show their true sportsmanship during the meet.
The strength of an IIT is that it is an independent institute but it often works voluntarily with other IITs as a globally renowned system. The Inter IIT sports meet is the important “glue� that brings students, staff and faculty together once a year for intense competition in an environment of friendly cooperation. The benefits of this meet to the IIT system goes far beyond the sports fields. The ties that are formed here often live after the closing ceremony, growing stronger in academics and other activities.

Being hosted by Mumbai, the logo of the 50th Inter IIT Sports meet is our beloved Gateway of India. King George V entered Mumbai through this gate and in a similar fashion students from all IITs will enter IIT Bombay hoping to excel and win the cup for their college. Attributing to the Golden Jubilee of this mega event, the logo is also golden. The entry to this gate, unlike its original counterpart, is trophy-shaped, depicting the competitive spirit and zeal of the students for the General Championship.
THE OFFICIAL MASCOT - CHHAWA
The Mascot for the 50th Inter IIT Sports Meet is a leopard named Chhawa. IIT Bombay, the host for the Sports Meet, is known for its close proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Over the years, this has led to many sightings of leopards in the campus, the most recent in July 2014. Hence the Organizing team felt that a leopard would be the most apt mascot for the 50th Inter IIT Sports Meet. The word Chhawa means ‘cub’ in Marathi, but it is also colloquially used for a smart person, just like our mascot! The yellowish-golden colour of the leopard stands for the Golden Jubilee of the Inter IIT Sports Meet. The leopard also signifies athleticism and physical strength required to compete in sporting activities.

As this was the going to be the 50th edition of the Inter IIT Sports Meet, the Organizing committee wanted to make it a special occasion by giving back to the society from a truly pan-IIT platform. The IITs being premier technological institutions in India, it was decided that an initiative for improving the condition of primary education in the country will be undertaken. The initiative was named Mashāl, to symbolize the Inter IIT Torch. Under this initiative, torch runs were conducted in all the 16 IITs and depending upon the number of participants, a fixed amount of money was donated by our corporate partners to Smile Foundation, a national level development orga16

The campaign was officically kicked off by Shreyas Talpade. nization that will utilize these funds in its Mission Education programme, supporting primary education of the underprivileged children in our society. Mashāl was officially launched at the opening ceremony of the Aquatics Leg of the Inter IIT Sports Meet on September 30, 2014. Renowned actor Shreyas Talpade personally endorsed Mashāl, and
was present at its kick-off to handover the Inter IIT Torch to the captains of all the IITs. He also took out time to interact with the children from Smile Foundation. Over the next one and half months, similar torch runs were conducted in all the 16 IITs, with a total of over 8000 students as well as faculty members participating.

Kanpur bagged the water polo trophy
The Aquatics leg of the 50th Inter IIT Sports Meet was conducted from 1st October to 4th October, 2014 at IIT Bombay. The entire event occurred at the newly constructed Olympic size swimming pool. Virdhawal Khade, the youngest Olympian of the country and Asian Games medalist was the Chief Guest for the opening ceremony. After 16 events in Men’s Category and 6 in Women’s Category spread across the four days, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee emerged victorious in the Men’s and Women’s category respectively in swimming. Akshay Krishna (IIT Madras) and Nivedita Sharma (IIT Roorkee) were the best competitors in their respective categories, each bagging 5 Gold medals.
The meet saw previous Inter IIT records broken, 4 of them by Akshay Krishna one equalled by Parth Tripathi (IIT Kanpur). IIT Kanpur won the Water Polo Championship after beating IIT Kharagpur 8-5 in a nail-biting final decided by a penalty shootout. The meet concluded with Bhakti Sharma, the youngest swimmer to swim the seven seas and four oceans, attending as the Guest of Honour. Miss Sharma felicitated the champions and inspired them to reach greater heights in future endeavours.

ATHLETICS
BASKETBALL
Comprising of a total of 18 events for men and 10 events for women, Athletics has been one of the most important sports since the inception of Inter IIT. It is one of the five sports to be competed in during the first Inter IIT Sports meet held in 1961. The sport has since been testing the limits of the players and inspiring them to surpass the same. Currently holding a whopping 20 points in the Men’s GC, it becomes the most important factor in determining the Overall Champions.
In early December 1891, Canadian Dr. James Naismith, a physical education professor sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and formulated the basic rules of modern day basketball. It was originally played with a soccer ball. The orange ball and dribbling which weren’t part of the original game were introduced in the late 1950s. For the Golden Jubilee Inter IIT, IIT Bombay has recently completed construction of state-ofthe-art indoor basketball courts. The courts have thin coated teraflex surfaces, which is a first in the country.

Badminton has become a widely popular sport in India with the new talent that our nation has produced. It’s no surprise that it is also the most loved and played sport in our institute. A new 5 court air conditioned badminton hall was developed in 2011 which was inaugurated by seven-time National singles champion Miss Ami Ghia Shah. Ashok Raman was the badminton star from IITB back in 1981, he was a national level player competing with the likes of Syed Modi, the then national champion.

Ravi Kumar Institute Football Secretary According to FIFA the competitive game cuju is the earliest form of football for which there is scientific evidence. The modern rules of association football are based on the mid-19th century efforts to standardise the widely varying forms of football played in the public schools of England. In India, traditionally it has enjoyed popularity in the regions such as West Bengal, Goa, Kerala, and the entire north-eastern India. The current captain of the Indian national team is Sunil Chhetri and the team is coached by Wim Koevermans. The Indian Super League was founded in 2013 in an effort to make football a top sport in India and to make Indian football a major player worldwide. The 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup is scheduled to take place in India. By virtue of being the host country, the Indian team will play in the tournament.
CRICKET
LAWN TENNIS
Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed to be the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international match was held. Cricket is easily the most popular sport in India. The Indian national cricket team won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most-watched Twenty20 cricket league in the world and is also known for its commercial success.
Tennis traces its origins back to between 1859 and 1865, during which Harry Gem and his friend Augurio Perera developed a game that combined elements of racquets and the Basque ball game pelota, which they played on Perera’s croquet lawn in Birmingham. In 1872, along with two local doctors, they founded the world’s first tennis club in Leamington Spa. Tennis enjoys a considerable following in India. In 1997 India won their first Grand Slam title at the French open, in the Mixed Doubles. Since then India have continued to win titles in the Mixed doubles as well as the Men’s Doubles. IIT Bombay was victorious in the Tennis tournament (Men) in 2013 and are looking to defend their title this year, especially since the games will now be held on their home turf.

HOCKEY
Waqar Younus Institute Hockey Secretary Hockey is one of the earliest form of sports. In Egypt, 4000-year-old carvings feature teams with sticks and a projectile, hurling dates to before 1272 BC in Ireland, and there is a depiction of a similar sport from approximately 600 BC in Ancient Greece. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team was the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation. In 1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal, and has won a total of eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals. It was the national sport of India until the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports declared that India has no national sport in August 2012.

SQUASH
Ritvik Goyal Institute Squash Secretary Squash is a fairly rare sport in India, but lately gaining ground with Indian squash players like Saurav Ghosal, Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa performing admirably in several international tournaments. Squash in Inter-IIT was officially introduced in 2010, and has grown in participation over the years, with 12 IITs participating in 2013. IIT Roorkee won the previous 2 installments of Inter-IIT, and will be looking forward to retaining their titles this time around. For this year’s edition of Inter-IIT, three new stateof-art squash courts have been constructed at the IIT Bombay campus.

TABLE TENNIS
Weightlifting as a sport in India is gaining a lot of ground lately, with Indian atheletes like Sanjita Khumukcham and Sukhen Dey winning gold in Commonwealth games in their respective weight categories, and Mirabai Chanu Saikhom bagging silver. In Inter-IIT too, weightlifting has been in play since its initiation and has been going strong, with all the IITs sending athletes to compete. There are 5 weight categories involved in Inter-IIT. Last year, Deepak Choudhari from IIT Bombay lifted snatch of 101 kg which is a record in the history of Inter IIT, with more records expected to be broken in this year’s edition.
As a sport that emphasizes endurance and reflexes above simply size and strength, people of all ages and genders can play on an equal field in Table-tennis. Table tennis has evolved significantly since its surprise birth upon the sporting world, acquiring many revisions of rules and seeing an evolution of equipment as technology and playing styles changed. As a sport in Inter-IIT, table tennis has been one of the most competitive sports, with all the 16 IITs sending their teams to this years edition. With Madras winning in 2013 and Guwahati in 2012, who will win the tournament this year is an open question. The table tennis hall in the old SAC has been renovated and air conditioners have been installed to ease off the humid conditions of Mumbai.

Shripad Thakur Institute Volleyball Secretary A purely rebound sport (you can’t hold the ball), Volleyball is a game of constant motion, requiring constant movement from the players and mental acuity too, for a player must assess incoming angle of the ball, decide where to pass the ball and then control their pass in the blink of an eye. In Inter-IIT, volleyball has always been a huge affair, with all 16 IITs sending their teams and the first place taken by different teams in the past two years. For this year’s Inter-IIT, three new synthetic volleyball courts have been built. 30
