LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Benjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.” This premise is deeply rooted in Vail Jazz’s educational programs, which teach music education to children of all ages. We focus on the fundamentals of jazz, providing a foundation for young people to understand and appreciate the art at an early age. And this summer, we celebrate youth in a number of exciting ways. From Jammin’ Jazz Kids, our free Sunday programs in July, where youngsters get hands-on experiences learning about rhythms and improvisation, to our highly competitive Vail Jazz Workshop, where twelve talented high school students are selected (from hundreds of applicants) to work alongside the best jazz educators and performers in a nationally acclaimed intensive program. And new this year, we will celebrate jazz bands made up of Colorado high school students, who will perform select days at the Vail Farmers’ Market prior to professionals taking the stage.

Throughout the summer, Vail Jazz will also present over 200 jazz artists in intimate and exciting venues in over 60 shows. The list of performers reads like a “Who’s Who” of today’s biggest jazz stars - Monty Alexander, John Pizzarelli, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Joey Alexander and so many more. From our free performances at Vail Jazz @ The Market and Vail Jazz @ The Remedy, to our wonderful community offerings like Vail SummerFest and Riverwalk First Fridays, and our premium events Vail Jazz @ Vail Square, Vail Jazz Club Series and the Vail Jazz Party—I am sure you will be blown away by the talent and musicianship of the artists that make up the 22nd Annual Vail Jazz Festival. It thrills me that this summer Vail Jazz will present jazz giants each week, while working diligently to share our passion for this incredible American art form with young people at all stages, both locals and visitors alike. Young people represent the future, and their education is so important to keeping the legacy of jazz alive. I hope you catch at least one of our world-class performances—and witness the magic we create with our educational programs that inspire tomorrow’s jazz fans—in our intimate Festival here in Vail. RITMO JAZZ LATINO June 26

Denver-based Ritmo Jazz Latino is a staple at jazz festivals, music seminars and a wide variety of special events and educational clinics, bringing their infectious Latin rhythms, styles and musical influences to a variety of traditional jazz (and not so trad-jazz!) musical selections. This talented quintet includes Grammy® winners, award-winning arrangers, popular Cuban and Puerto Rican percussionists, and Latin luminaries. The band includes Walter Barr (trumpet, flugelhorn), Francisco Mejias (timbales), Justin Adams (keyboards), Peter Huffakerl (bass) and Christine Barbosa (vocals).

Back in Vail for another exciting reprise, Ginga specializes in channeling the dynamic music of Brazil, incorporating a multitude of high-spirited styles, rhythms and colors of jazz from Terra do Brasil! Ginga is Carl Dixon (percussion), Bill Kopper (guitar, vocals), Francisco Marques (cavaquinho, bass, percussion, vocals), Victor Mestas (keyboard), Vincent Gonzalez (percussion, vocals) and Raoul Rossiter (drums, percussion, vocals).

THE GIRSHEVICH TRIO July 10

Before emigrating to the US, Vlad Girshevich studied classical piano for 11 years in his homeland of Uzbekistan. He was “discovered” while playing at The Little Nell in Aspen by Herbie Hancock, who subsequently invited him to participate in the Thelonious Monk Institute. Vlad is joined by his son Aleks, a young drumming phenom, now 15, who recorded his first album at age 10! Rounding out the trio is Bill McCrossen, one of NY’s most in-demand bassists for orchestra and Broadway work. Look for the new CD Algorithmic Society by The Girshevich Trio featuring Eddie Gomez.

DEXTER PAYNE QUINTET July 17

DPQ will once again delight Vail fans with classic improvised jazz interlaced with the vibrant harmonies and the pulse of Brazil. Dexter has played clarinet in 13 countries, performing from Tijuana to Paris, and on The Today Show and Prairie Home Companion with his virtuosity on clarinet. He is joined by Bill Kopper on guitar, Dave Willey on accordion, Victor Mestas on keyboard, and Raoul Rossiter on drums/percussion. Known for their delightful, impressive performances as soloists, this quintet clearly displays the concept of musical synergy.

JOE DENINZON WITH THE MARK DIAMOND TRIO July 24

Joe Deninzon, born in St. Petersburg, Russia, has been lauded as “The Jimi Hendrix of the Violin” owing to his innovative style on the electric 7-string violin and his musical excursions combining jazz, rock and Gypsy influences. He is performing with one of the most sought-after jazz trios in the Rocky Mountains: Mark Diamond (bass), Dru Heller (drums), and Andy Weyl (keyboard). vailjazz.org

Hailed by Wynton Marsalis as an interpreter of “clarity, elegance and uncommon grace,” trumpeter/composer Sean Hennessy leads this versatile Colorado-based sextet in their first Vail Jazz appearance. The group includes Cully Joyce (sax), Colin McAllister (guitar), Brad Bietry (keyboard), Jason Crowe (bass), and Devin Malloy (drums). With a unique sound that features original music in intricate arrangements, their versatility and virtuosity are showcased in soulful ballads, driving swing, Latin, hard bop and more.

KATHY MORROW WITH DZ August 7

A longtime Vail Jazz favorite, Kathy has performed widely in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Her energy, vocal range and musical sense are beautifully applied to the standard jazz repertoire and Great American Songbook. A natural entertainer, Kathy is also well known as part of the popular vocal trio The Fabulous Femmes. Joining Kathy on keyboard is Brent Gordon (alto & tenor sax, vocals), Ron Bland (bass) and Larry Dutmer (drums).

BLT WITH BOB REBHOLZ August 14

BLT is one of the Vail area’s most popular duos: Brian Loftus and Tony Gulizia, supplying mountains of great jazz for years. This prolific team focuses on the jazz you know and love, from Duke Ellington to Count Basie, from the Gershwins and Cole Porter to Al Jarreau and Van Morrison. With Brian on drums, Tony is on keyboards and vocals, the duo is joined by Bob Rebholz, the most sought after saxophonist in the Denver area.

KATIE GLASSMAN AND SNAPSHOT August 21

Based in Boulder, fiddler/singer/songwriter Katie Glassman is a Colorado favorite, known for both her instrumental virtuosity and musical expression. With the release of her CD Snapshot, Katie and her band have garnered a national following for their marriage of old-time Western Swing music with contemporary songwriting and musicianship sensibilities. She is joined by Eric Moon on keyboard and accordion, Charlie Mertens on bass and Greg Schochet on guitar.

CHUCK LAMB JAZZFUSION QUARTET August 28

Playing some original material from his new CD North by Northeast, stellar keyboard player Chuck Lamb returns to the Market with Joe Anderies (woodwinds), Bijoux Barbosa (bass), and Paul Romaine (drums). In addition to playing hard-driving originals, JazzFusion will put some new twists on some old standards, delivering a great afternoon of top flight jazz, including some ballads, blues, straight ahead jazz, and a plethora of tuneful energy.

Jammin’ Jazz Kids is an engaging and interactive musical experience centered on the FUNdamentals of jazz, where kids watch professional jazz musicians create music, and then join them in playing rhythms and learning the art of improvisation. Youngsters 4-12 years old will play a variety of percussion instruments—maracas, congas, bongos, tambourines and Orff instruments—in this popular hands-on activity Sunday mornings in July at the Vail Farmers’ Market.

Originally a piano student, she first performed professionally as a big band singer and trumpeter at 16 and, since then, has been hailed as one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation. Recipient of numerous prestigious jazz awards, she in now a frequent headliner at jazz festivals and prestigious clubs throughout the world. With a sultry voice likened to Peggy Lee, Diana Krall and Dinah Washington, she also wows audiences with her impressive trumpet playing and knowledge of classic jazz, while often combining soul, world rhythms and innovative percussion. At 13, Indonesian jazz piano prodigy Joey Alexander has already played at prestigious festivals, clubs and venues all over the world, including last year’s TED Conference. His first album (released when he was 11!) scored Grammy® nominations in 2015 for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo. Following a profile of Joey by 60 Minutes earlier this year, his debut album (which features two Vail Jazz Workshop alumni) jumped to #1 on the Amazon Best Sellers chart and #4 on the iTunes Top Albums chart, receiving glowing accolades from The New York Times, CNN, Keyboard Magazine, Billboard Magazine, and many others. Exposed at an early age to jazz classics through his father’s record collection, his early influences include Ellington, Monk, Evans and Coltrane, although he admits to a special affinity for trumpet players too. His deft touch, adventurous and sometimes impressionistic musical spirit and improvisatory verve are nothing less than stunning. She has won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, the DownBeat Critics Poll for jazz album of the year, the Jazz Journalists Association Award for female vocalist of the year and a Grammy® for best jazz vocal album. Possessing a rich and varied tonal palette, combined with a supple sense of swing, she offers unique interpretations of American standards, as well as some unknown and scarcely recorded jazz and blues morsels. In all cases, she demonstrates exquisite taste in songs and phrasing, and a deep connection to the lyrics, whether they be English, Spanish or French. Born into a family of musicians, Orlando “Maraca” Valle began studying flute at ten in his native Havana. At 22 he joined the famous Cuban group Irakere founded by Chucho Valdés and Paquito D’Rivera as flutist, keyboard, composer and arranger, and later shared the stage with Dizzy Gillespie and Chick Corea among many others. His international appeal has led him to stages globally, performing in a variety of genres including Latin jazz, Cuban jazz, salsa, timba, world music and jazz fusion. Maraca is also considered an authority and major influence in Afro-Cuban music and received a Grammy® nomination for Best Salsa Album, reflecting his ability to blend jazz improvisation with the most danceable elements of Cuban popular music. H2 BIG BAND TRIBUTE TO COUNT BASIE

William James “Count” Basie (1904-1984) started performing in his teens, improvising piano accompaniment for silent films in his home town of Red Bank, NJ before gaining popularity in Harlem clubs in his early 20s. At 30 he formed his own jazz orchestra and never looked back, leading the group for nearly 50 years, and having a tremendous influence, even today, on the sound of big band music and ensemble jazz. That distinctive “Basie sound” is impressively channeled by the H2 Big Band, a world-class ensemble of 17 musicians under the co-leadership of trumpeter Al Hood and pianist Dave Hanson. H2, back by popular demand after last year’s triumph at Vail Jazz’s Swingin’ Affair, features a wealth of talent amply displayed by the band’s excellent and energetic arrangements. As the exuberant kickoff to the Vail Jazz Party, this trinity of tonal treats opens with the Vail Jazz All-Stars (in residency at the Vail Jazz Workshop)—a dozen of the best and brightest high school jazz players in North America, whose infectious enthusiasm always brings Vail audiences to their feet. Adding further to the evening’s revelry is the Vail Jazz Alumni Quintet: five former Vail Jazz Workshop students including Adam Bravo (piano ‘06), Russell Hall (bass ‘10), Luciana Padmore (drums ‘97), Benny Benack III (trumpet ‘08), and Braxton Cook (alto saxophone ‘09). The grand finale of the night is the Vail Jazz Party House Band, comprised of the Workshop instructors—and fan favorites—John Clayton (bass), Jeff Clayton (alto sax), Bill Cunliffe (piano), Terell Stafford (trumpet), Wycliffe Gordon (trombone) and Lewis Nash (drums). Sometimes we explore the life of a legendary musician or a notable jazz ensemble. Other times we’ll take an in-depth look at a particular instrument, or a style of playing, or we explore the music, history and culture of a particular era in the jazz age. Whatever the subject, our jazz devotees can count on being illuminated and entertained on a short musical journey, expertly curated by some of today’s giants of jazz.

BYRON STRIPLING’S MULTI-MEDIA TRIBUTE TO THE BIRTH OF THE BLUES Jazz pros, R&B lovers, rock & rollers, and even the most high-brow classical musicians—when asked to jam together, all gravitate to the standard blues form. The common 12-bar blues iisn’t really about music, it’s about agitation, depression, loss or hopelessness. Early blues (early 1900’s) frequently took the form of a loose narrative, as African-American singers voiced personal woes - lost loves, police cruelty, white oppression, hard work or no work. Among the earliest published practitioners of blues was the popular and prolific W.C.Handy, self-styled “Father of the Blues,” whose prodigious output (and performances) injected blues into the everyday American musical vocabulary. In the ‘20s, a variety of regional blues styles emerged, eventually culminating in big band blues, as purveyed by Count Basie, Glenn Miller and others. But it was a handful of female singers in the 1920’s who helped popularize the blues to a national level: Bessie Smith, Lucille Bogan and Gertrude Malissa Nix Pridgett, known as “Ma” Rainey, widely considered the “Mother of Blues.” These classic female blues singers proffered increasing amounts of improvisation on melodic lines, alteration of phrasing, lyrical impact, and vocal dramatics including shouts, groans, moans and wails! Thanks to them and their predecessors, the blues can be seen (and felt) in music worldwide, across all genres. {cont’d pg. 62}

“KEEPING TIME, THE LIFE, MUSIC AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF MILT HINTON” Celebrating one of America’s greatest musicians, this film captures the life story of legendary American jazz bassist and photographer Milt Hinton. His lifelong passion to document his world, musically and visually, provides a unique portrait of life in 20th century America. Hinton performed with every major jazz artist in his 70-year career, and photographed many of them, from Dizzy Gillespie (when they shared Cab Calloway’s bandstand in the ‘30s) to shooting Billie Holiday’s last recording session. The film intimately embraces the rich life of a remarkable musician who recognized and recorded history as he was living it, and playing it. Capturing the words, images and music of “The Judge” and his colleagues, this memorable film includes hundreds of evocative images from Hinton’s portfolio of 60,000+ images.

JOHN CLAYTON’S TRIBUTE TO MILT HINTON Active as a musician for 70 years, Milton John Hinton (1910-2000) was considered “the dean of jazz bass players,” an honor reflected by his nickname “The Judge.” Born in Vicksburg, MS, he later moved to Chicago where, as a freelance musician, his skills soon won him work with Art Tatum, Dizzy Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, Ben Webster and others. Early on, Hinton developed his distinctive style of “slapping” the strings on his bass, for which he became famous while playing in Cab Calloway’s big band for 15 years. Hinton was frequently given the spotlight by Calloway (unusual for a bass player), offering virtuoso bass solos in a variety of tunes. Later, he made concert and festival appearances around the world and toured extensively with Louis Armstrong, Pearl Bailey and Bing Crosby and played regularly on The Jackie Gleason Show and The Dick Cavett Show {cont’d pg. 62}

Before New York became the jazz capital of the world, jazz was percolating and erupting throughout the South and Midwest thanks to a plethora of traveling dance bands featuring highly talented musicians. Traveling jazz and swing orchestras were hugely popular outside the big cities and Texas, due to its size and population, became a regular stamping ground for these high-calibre bands. Marry this thriving musical climate with a love of the local saloon and honky-tonk, and a new sound emerged from a series of tenor saxophonists favoring a heavily articulated, wide and wailing sound—a sound that inflected their jazz, R&B, rock, soul and funk performances and recordings for decades to come. {cont’d pg. 62} Photo: Lee Morgan

22nd Annual Vail Jazz Festival

Edward Lee Morgan, born in Philadelphia in 1938, was originally a vibraphone player, but by the age of 18—just five years after his sister gave him his first trumpet—he joined the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band as a trumpeter, starting a recording career that lasted until his death in 1972. As a teenager, Morgan took a few lessons with trumpeter Clifford Brown, who became his primary stylistic influence. By the mid1950’s he began recording the first of 25 albums as a leader for Blue Note Records. He later joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers where he further developed his talent as a soloist and composer before his career was derailed by drug problems in 1961. Morgan continued to compose and record prolifically, recording another 20 albums as a leader. He was known for his unique, physically aggressive playing style and was recognized early in his career as a virtuoso, delivering emotionally charged solos with unusual strength in the upper registers. {cont’d pg. 62}

Back by popular demand is The Mile Hi Gospel Ensemble, a golden-voiced ensemble who bring their Sunday Best for a rousing morning of invigorating vivification!

PIANO DUOS Expect some musical fireworks as these four “ivory impresarios” strut their stuff on the Vail Jazz stage! Inspired by the popularity of last year’s duo outing, the Vail Jazz audience is eagerly anticipating a new round of improvisational antics. We’re not sure this is what Wolfgang had in mind when he popularized piano duets in the late 1700’s, but this year’s combination of amazing piano artists—on two facing pianos—is bound to result in some remarkable, spontaneous musical moments, a few mind melds, some stunning contrasts and, no doubt, some entertaining keyboard capers along the way! He twice received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts for his work as a jazz educator, and his appearances on 1,174 recording sessions have garnered him the distinction of most-recorded jazz musician in history. The tribute to a legendary performer and educator, which includes personal recollections, videos and photos, is hosted by John Clayton (bass), with Bill Cunliffe (piano), Lewis Nash (drums), Ken Peplowski (clarinet) and Byron Stripling (trumpet). As a special tip of the hat to “The Judge,” a rare 4-bass performance by John Clayton, Peter Washington, Russell Hall and Christoph Luty, is sure to bring broad, Hinton-esque smiles to performers and audience alike.

At 33, Morgan was shot between sets at a jazz club by his common-law wife: due to a heavy snowfall that night in NYC, the ambulance was slow to arrive and Morgan bled to death. But during his short professional life, Morgan’s technical skills, combined with his distinctive, original stylings, attracted a broad following; legions of subsequent players have emulated his approach ever since. Joining Terell Stafford in his tribute to trumpet notable Lee Morgan are Bruce Barth (piano), Peter Washington (bass), Billy Williams (drums), and Tim Warfield (tenor sax).

Thanks to this innovative program, nearly 18,000 local children have embarked on the study of jazz, its history, and its role in society. Led by local jazz fixture and popular educator Tony Gulizia, the interactive format gives 4th and 5th graders an opportunity to experience the history of jazz, learn about legendary jazz musicians and gain perspective on the eras they inhabited. Tony and his fellow musician/ educators then deconstruct the music into its essential parts, allowing insight into the component elements of melody, rhythm, harmony and structure.

The classes involve both demonstration and participation, with students playing instruments and experiencing first-hand how the individual elements of music come together into a cohesive work of art. By the end of our time with them, the students write original lyrics and the instructors perform their pieces at an authentic jazz concert at the beautiful Vilar Performing Arts Center. Enjoying a record number of applicants again this year, this highly successful program offers Workshop hopefuls the opportunity to learn and perform in a high-pressure environment of talented peers, world-renowned instructors, and legendary professional musicians at the Vail Jazz Party during Labor Day weekend. To date, 250 high schoolers have been mentored through the program by some of today’s legendary jazz artists including Workshop director John Clayton, bass, Jeff Clayton, saxophone, Bill Cunliffe, piano, Wycliffe Gordon, trombone, Lewis Nash, drums, and Terell Stafford, trumpet. Each of these exceptional teacher/ clinicians is in great demand on the international jazz scene, often sacrificing far more remunerative opportunities to “pay it forward” by sharing their expertise as teachers and mentors to our aspiring young musicians. The success and growing reputation of the Workshop is a tribute to their talent and commitment, and we are deeply indebted to this amazing faculty. Many Workshop alumni, as evidenced by this year’s Vail Jazz Alumni Quintet, have advanced to highly successful musical careers, garnering Grammy® recognition, recording opportunities, tours and performances at notable jazz venues and music festivals throughout the world. The success of our Workshop graduates and their glowing accolades for the Vail experience in turn supports the stellar reputation of the Workshop as one of the finest performing jazz incubators in the world.

CARTER BRODKORB {piano}

Carter hails from Toronto, Canada where he is active on the local jazz scene, playing with some of Canada’s finest musicians. A piano player since he was three, he has studied both classical and jazz, as well as trumpet and music composition. He has participated in a variety of all-star jazz bands, combos and the MusicFest Canada Honour Big Band. Winner of 12 Gold Standard Awards, a Berklee College music scholarship, the Jazz Educator’s Network Jazz Musician of the Year, and two DownBeat Magazine awards for best original composition, Carter hopes the Vail Jazz Workshop experience will teach him to engage soloists and the rhythm section more authoritatively while still respecting the balance of the ensemble.

ZAQ DAVIS {trumpet}

Born and raised in NYC, Zaq was selected as the only freshman invitee to the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony and also won a full scholarship to the Skidmore Jazz Institute. He was accepted into the Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy and was selected for the Jazz Band of America. A student of both classical and jazz trumpet, Zaq has played in a variety of settings including brass choir, chamber ensembles, big bands and smaller combos. He is hopeful that the Vail Jazz Workshop will impel him to be more interactive in his playing, deriving more inspiration from the players around him.

JOSEPH GIORDANO {trombone}

A native of Albany, NY Joe began his musical training with classical piano lessons in first grade, adding trombone studies in fourth grade. Gravitating toward jazz at an early age, he has since studied with a variety of prominent teachers and recently began attending the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Precollege program. Joe has played in many bands, ensembles and combos, including the Skidmore Jazz Institute and the NY State All-State Jazz Ensemble. He looks to his Workshop experience to expand his thinking about improvisation possibilities.

NICK KEPRON {drums}

From Cherry Hill, NJ, Nick is a drummer, composer and band leader who grew up in a musical household. Exposed to big band, classical, funk, vocal and multi-instrumental music, he is currently co-leader of a 17-piece funk and fusion band and is the drummer for the award-winning Cherry Hill East Jazz Lab Band. He has played with the NY Summer Music Festival Symphony Orchestra, as well as the festival’s Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Combo and Big Band. He was awarded the Stanley Kay Music Scholarship by the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. Nick hopes to be inspired, challenged and mentored by the roster of stellar Vail Jazz Workshop instructors. vailjazz.org

PHILIP NORRIS {bass}

Originally a student of classical French horn, Wake Forest, NC based Philip gravitated to jazz bass in seventh grade, taking music theory classes at various summer camps. While in high school, Philip was selected for the National Association of Music Educators All-National Jazz Ensemble, the NC All-Region Jazz Band, and NC All-State Jazz Band. He also participated in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Summer Jazz Academy, mentored by members of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis. An Ella Fitzgerald Scholarship recipient and a National YoungArts finalist on jazz bass, Philip looks to the Vail Jazz Workshop to allow him to learn from great faculty and fellow musicians alike, before he attends Juilliard this fall.

JASIM PERALES {trombone}

Hailing from Oakland, CA, Jasim started playing trombone in the fourth grade and soon began private lessons, including his introduction to jazz, at Oakland School for the Arts. As a sixth grader there, he was already playing with the high school jazz band and was soon playing with the SFJazz High School All-Stars. Since then Jasim has played with the Grammy® Band, the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and a variety of all-star combos and bands. He is excited about the opportunity to learn from the Workshop’s preeminent instructors, as well as creating meaningful musical connections with his fellow students.

BRIAN RICHBURG, JR. {drums}

A New Orleans native, Brian began his drumming career in the kitchen, banging on pots and pans, graduating to a drum set at age five. By eight, he was playing drums full-time in his father’s church and today studies with noted saxophonist Donald Harrison and drummer Herlin Riley. He is active in a variety of ensembles and youth orchestras, is a YoungArts Finalist, won a scholarship to Skidmore Jazz Institute, and holds numerous other jazz awards and citations. He looks forward to the Vail Jazz Workshop for its intense interactions with the “greatest musicians on the planet.”

GABE RUPE {bass}

A Colorado native, Gabe attends Denver School of the Arts and has played in a wide variety of Denver-area jazz bands, combos as well as the Colorado All State Jazz Band and the Colorado Conservatory Big Band. Winner of multiple awards of excellence for his bass playing, Gabe is also an attentive listener, averaging about two hours a day of appreciating various jazz stylists. While at the Vail Jazz Workshop, Gabe hopes to develop a deeper connection and understanding of jazz that will allow him to captivate audiences in the same way that legendary jazzers have.

JAKE SASFAI {piano}

The product of a musical family from Maplewood, NJ, Jake has played piano since he was six, studying both jazz and classical repertoire. In addition to performing with various local jazz trios and groups, Jake has performed in several Jazz House groups, the NY Jazz Symposium Combo, the Brubeck Institute Jazz Combo and several high school jazz bands. He was selected for the Brubeck Institute Jazz Colony and won first place in the Princeton Steinway Jazz Competition. Jake hopes the Vail Jazz Workshop, particularly its focus on developing aural skills, will improve his ear and phrasing proficiency, as well as his bandstand presence.

DAVID SNEIDER {trumpet}

A NYC native, David has played trumpet since third grade, active in both classical and jazz ensembles. In addition to his role in a number of high school jazz and concert bands, David has played in the NY Conference All-State Jazz Band, NY Area All-State Orchestra, NY Youth Symphony Jazz Band and participated in Eastman Summer Jazz. He was awarded four scholarships with the NY Summer Music Festival and won Best Soloist for three consecutive years at the Sleepy Hollow Jazz Festival. At the Vail Jazz Workshop, David hopes to define and refine his unique sound while learning more standards and playing with other top rated students and pros.

ALEX YUWEN {tenor saxophone}

From Chandler, AZ, Alex began playing piano at six, taking classical lessons before switching to classical and jazz saxophone. In the past four years, Alex has performed in a wide variety of All-State bands and orchestras, has been selected as Outstanding Soloist for both saxophone and clarinet, and attended the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. Although a fan of contemporary jazz he credits John Coltrane, Joe Henderson and Sonny Rollins for inspiring his sound and musical thinking. At the Workshop, he intends to hone his ability to perform in ensemble settings and gain confidence in contributing appropriate, contextual solos.

AUSTIN ZHANG {alto saxophone}

A resident of Plano, TX, Austin began studying saxophone at 12 and within a few years was a merit winner with the National YoungArts Foundation. He later received a full scholarship to the Berklee Global Jazz Workshop, was lead alto for this year’s Jazz Band of America and has performed with a variety of youth orchestras and All-State jazz bands. He currently performs professionally at a number of Dallas-area venues. Invoking the names of numerous Workshop alumni, Austin says “the musicians who get together at Vail often stay together to create an incredible impact on music and people across the world.” He is excited about joining that elite, growing club. vailjazz.org

California-born jazz pianist, composer and teacher, Bruce has toured with jazz masters Stanley Turrentine, Nat Adderley, and Terence Blanchard, and has performed regularly with Tony Bennett, James Moody, Phil Woods, Wynton and Branford Marsalis and many others. He is credited with more than 100 recordings and movie soundtracks, including 10 as a leader, and is active both as soloist and collaborator in New York and at clubs and festivals throughout the world. As a Grammy®-nominated producer Bruce has more than 20 CDs to his credit. He studied with Jaki Byard, Fred Hersch and George Russell and has been on the jazz faculty of Temple University for more than 10 years.

BENNY BENACK III trumpet

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Benny quickly gained a reputation for being a versatile, fiery improvisor, having studied trumpet with Terell Stafford among others. He has won every major trumpet competition, performed alongside Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Terence Blanchard and has appeared at prestigious festivals and jazz venues throughout the US. Having sung and performed with his father’s big band from the age of nine, Benny is also an accomplished jazz pianist and singer, and Wynton Marsalis featured him as one of the “next generation of jazz greats.” Benny attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2008.

ADAM BRAVO piano

Influenced in his youth by Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans, Adam has become a dynamic presence on the LA music scene as pianist, composer and arranger. He has studied with Shelly Berg, John Clayton, Alan Pasqua and Russ Ferrante, and has won outstanding soloist awards at several major jazz festivals. His credits as a keyboardist include Barbara Morrison, Tierney Sutton, Roy McCurdy, and a number of Disney-related gigs. His arrangements and compositions have garnered numerous accolades including a DownBeat Award in the best original song category. Adam also leads a progressive jazz R&B band. Adam attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2006.

JOHN CLAYTON bass

John began seriously studying the bass at 16 with Ray Brown, and by 19 the Grammy® winner and eight-time Grammy® nominee became the bassist for Henry Mancini’s television series. After tours with Monty Alexander and Count Basie, the LA native moved to Amsterdam and was principal bassist in the Amsterdam Philharmonic for five years. Equally praised for his composing/arranging as for his thoughtful bass playing, John has written and arranged for Diana Krall, Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, and Natalie Cole. He is co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the Clayton Brothers Quintet, a Board member of the Vail Jazz Foundation, and has been Vail Jazz’s Director of Education for the past 21 years.

JEFF CLAYTON alto saxophone

Born in Los Angeles and now teaching part of the time in Australia, alto saxophonist Jeff Clayton co-leads both the Grammy®-nominated Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the Clayton Brothers Quintet. In demand as a touring and studio musician, Jeff has recorded with Stevie Wonder, Kurt Elling, Gladys Knight, Kenny Rogers, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle, Madonna and Earth, Wind & Fire. Jeff has worked with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton and Lena Horne. Jeff is the recipient of the L.A. Jazz Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. This is his 20th year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

BRAXTON COOK alto saxophone

Boston-born and now living in Harlem, Braxton recently completed a European tour with Christian Scott and is currently working on his first CD for the Braxton Cook Quartet. His introduction to the saxophone occurred hearing Grover Washington Jr.’s solo on the Bill Wither’s song “Just the Two of Us” and his dedication to the saxophone in the ensuing years resulted in being awarded the Illinois Jacquet Scholarship at Juilliard School, where he is continuing his studies. Braxton was semi-finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition just several years after attending the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2009.

BILL CUNLIFFE piano

Equally in demand as arranger, composer and performer, Grammy®-winning pianist Bill Cunliffe began his career as pianist/arranger with the Buddy Rich Big Band and worked with Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson and James Moody. He has since established himself as a solo artist and bandleader, with more than a dozen albums under his name. He won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Award, has received five Grammy® nominations and is a 2-time Emmy® nominee. Bill has written numerous film scores and currently plays with his trio, his big band, his Latin band and his classical-jazz ensemble. This is Bill’s 21st year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

ADRIAN CUNNINGHAM tenor saxophone, clarinet + flute

Originally from Sydney, Australia and now based in NYC, Adrian is equally fluent in saxophones, clarinet and flute. A fixture on the NY jazz scene, he has performed at many prestigious clubs and festivals with such luminaries as Wynton Marsalis, George Coleman Jr., Bucky Pizzarelli, Chris Potter and Renee Marie. He can be heard on the soundtracks for Boardwalk Empire and The Aviator, in addition to his seven CDs and several DVDs. Recently he has been performing with renowned trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, including gigs at the London, Newport, Bern and Johannesburg jazz festivals as well as two of Wycliffe’s CDs. Adrian plays regularly with the Adrian Cunningham Quartet and is one of the most in-demand freelance musicians in the US.

DIEGO FIGUEIREDO guitar

Underwritten by Chuck Steinmetz and Margery Pabst-Steinmetz At 36, Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo has already released 23 CDs, 3 DVDs and has played in 60 countries. Starting on a small guitar at age four, by 15 he was already playing in nightclubs and jazz venues throughout Brazil, either playing solo or improvising/harmonizing with well known musicians. He has won numerous guitar competitions including the Montreux Jazz Festival (twice) and has recorded and performed with Gilberto Gil, Joåo Bosco, Toninho Horta, Larry Coryell, Ken Peplowski, Lewis Nash, John Clayton and Cyrille Aimée.

BOBBY FLOYD piano + b3 organ

From his hometown of Columbus, OH Bobby travels the world as soloist, accompanist, and firstcall recording artist on piano, organ and keyboards. He has performed and toured with Ray Charles, Jeff Tyzik, Byron Stripling and many others. Bobby is also in demand for his guest appearances with a variety of distinguished orchestras including The Boston Pops, The Rochester Philharmonic, The Detroit Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, Edmond Symphony and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. Recent performances in Europe and Japan, along with several recent CD releases, have garnered high praise; Bobby continues to accompany the top jazz, blues and gospel artists in the country.

JOEL FRAHM tenor saxophone

Despite an early start with piano and bassoon, by eighth grade Joel began his much-acclaimed relationship with the tenor sax in his native Racine, WI. Early in his career, he entered Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead workshop and subsequently played with Maynard Ferguson and Larry Goldings, later touring and recording with Jane Monheit, Kurt Elling, Diane Schuur, Matt Wilson and many others. Joel has appeared on seven recordings as a leader, including the critically acclaimed duo outing with his high school buddy, pianist Brad Mehldau. Joel was a member of Mehldau’s early ‘90s quartet and the two have performed and recorded repeatedly since then.

JEROHN GARNETT bass

Born and raised in LA, Jerohn began playing drums at the age of three at his local church. Influenced by a host of great Gospel drummers, Jerohn has achieved equal renown as a bass player and producer as well. He has performed with Mariah Carey, Patti LaBelle, Justin Bieber, Natalie Cole and many others, and he has also logged appearances on the Grammy® Awards, Tonight Show, Late Show, Oprah, and Ellen. Jerohn appeared in the movies Dream Girls and Church and is currently playing with jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright.

WYCLIFFE GORDON trombone

Proficient on a wide range of instruments—too numerous to mention—Wycliffe Gordon picked up the trombone at 12 and today is the most highly awarded musician on the instrument, traveling the world playing and composing hard-swinging, straight-ahead jazz. With 17 solo CDs, and another eight as co-leader, he has won the Jazz Journalists Association Award for trombonist of the year eight times. He has performed with a long roster of VIP jazzers including Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan, Shirley Horn, Billy Taylor and was a member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet. Widely known for his commitment to jazz education, Wycliffe is a founding faculty member of the Jazz Studies Program at The Juilliard School; this is his fifth year as an instructor at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

RUSSELL HALL bass

At 17, Jamaica-born Russell was cited by Wynton Marsalis as a “jazz star of the future,” a designation reflected by the internationally acclaimed Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition which, three times, awarded Russell its “Most Outstanding Bassist” prize. Now living in NYC, Russell is finishing a degree at the Juilliard School where he studies with master bassists Ron Carter and Ben Wolfe. He can be seen and heard at the city’s most renowned jazz venues, appearing with such artists as Joshua Redman, Jon Hendricks, Cyrus Chestnut, Russell Malone, Joey Alexander and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. Russell is a 2010 alum of the Vail Jazz Workshop.

JEFF HAMILTON drums

Jeff began playing the drums in Indiana at eight, and is today featured with some of the top names in jazz and pop on more than 200 recordings, about 11 percent of which have received Grammy® nominations! He performs and records internationally with his own trio and as co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Early engagements included the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Lionel Hampton’s Band before joining the Monty Alexander Trio. He has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Rosemary Clooney and the Ray Brown Trio. He was recently voted #1 Jazz Drummer in Modern Drummer Magazine’s reader’s poll.

NIKI HARIS vocals

Born in Benton Harbor, MI, Niki pursued her education and singing career in Southern California, working with Ray Charles, Dianne Reeves, Nancy Wilson, David Sanborn, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston and Mick Jagger, among many others. She has toured and recorded with Madonna for 18 years, for whom she also choreographed. Niki has contributed as singer, dancer, actor, choreographer, and vocal arranger to multiple television shows, themes, movies, specials and commercials, and actively tours throughout the US and Europe.

TAMIR HENDELMAN piano

Beginning his keyboard studies as a young child in Tel Aviv, Tamir moved to the US at 12 and within two years had won Yamaha’s national keyboard competition. Since moving to LA, Tamir has been steadily engaged as a pianist and arranger, having recorded and toured with Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, John Pizzarelli, Gladys Knight, Diana Krall and many others. Touring throughout the US, Europe and Asia, Tamir’s performing and arranging prowess have been sought as part of the Jeff Hamilton Trio, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Tierney Sutton, Roberta Gambarini, and as guest soloist with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, in addition to fronting his own trio.

NICOLE HENRY vocals

A native of Bucks County, PA, Nicole returns to Vail after last year’s smash debut at Vail Jazz @ Vail Square to perform at the Vail Jazz Gala. Now based in Miami, Nicole delivers a potent brew of dynamic vocal abilities, sensitive phrasing and command of the stage, gaining accolades from audiences and critics alike, winning Best New Jazz Artist for her performances and recordings. Through her diversity and skills as a performer, she weaves musical stories while drawing upon her love of classic jazz, contemporary standards, blues and a touch of gospel. She has performed at more than 30 music festivals worldwide and has appeared at some of the world’s most revered jazz venues including the Blue Note, Blues Alley, Feinstein’s, Green Mill, and Catalina’s.

CRISTOPH LUTY bass

Born in Salt Lake City, Cristoph moved to LA to advance his bass skills while pursuing his studies at USC. Today he maintains a busy performance schedule appearing in venues throughout the US, Japan and Europe as a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and as longtime bassist of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (crediting bassist John Clayton as his mentor). He has recorded with Milt Jackson, John Pizzarelli, Diana Krall and has collaborated on concerts with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Clark Terry, Dave Brubeck, James Moody and Shirley Horn, among many others. Cristoph has been active in the education of young bassists, both through California State University and his private studio.

MARCUS MILLER bass

Brooklyn bassist Marcus Miller is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist best known for his bass guitar work. With multiple Grammys® and more than 500 recording credits on his résumé, he has contributed his distinctive, energetic bass sound to recordings by Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Z.Z.Hill, Billy Idol, Chaka Khan, Carly Simon, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, even opera star Kathleen Battle! Marcus was a member of the Saturday Night Live band and toured with Eric Clapton, Joe Sample, David Sanborn and Steve Gadd. He has composed more than 20 film scores and his latest album, Afrodeezia—inspired by Marcus’ role as a UNESCO Artist for Peace—was nominated for a 2016 Grammy®.

LEWIS NASH drums

Born in Phoenix, Lewis performed with local bands while attending Arizona State University, and soon after was performing with legends like Sonny Stitt, Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, Barney Kessell and Red Garland when their tours brought them to town. In addition to his ten years with Tommy Flanagan’s trio, Lewis has also performed or recorded with Oscar Peterson, J.J. Johnson, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Benny Carter, Clark Terry, Jim Hall and Ray Brown. With contributions to more than 300 albums, Lewis also leads his own groups from duo to septet and is highly sought after as a jazz educator; this is his 15th year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

LUCIANNA PADMORE drums

Bronx native Lucianna Padmore has been praised by Modern Drummer magazine for her “deep grooves and serious fusion chops.” Her versatile drumming, often described as tasteful and thoughtful, is featured with artists across multiple genres including jazz, hip-hop, funk, rock pop and fusion genres. An alumnus of the noted LaGuardia High School for Music and the Performing Arts and the New School University, she has received awards from Jazz at Lincoln Center and BMI and she was a featured drummer in Mary Lou Williams’ Women in Jazz Festival. Lucianna’s current live and studio projects include a residency at Red Rooster Harlem with the Rakiem Walker Project, Primordial Jazz Funktet, Bertha Hope’s Jazzberry Jam, the genre-busting Stratospheerius, as well as leading her own quartet. As an educator, she is active in drum instruction and jazz outreach in the N.Y. tri-state area. Lucianna attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 1997.

KEN PEPLOWSKI clarinet + tenor saxophone

Ken had his first professional engagement while still in elementary school in Cleveland--playing clarinet in a Polka band. He also taught at the local music store and played in the family band. After a year of college, he joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and shortly thereafter Benny Goodman put together a new band featuring Ken on tenor saxophone. Today, his appearances run the gamut from small local clubs to the Hollywood Bowl, headlining in Las Vegas and a wide variety of US and European festivals and clubs. He has recorded more than 50 CDs as a soloist and close to 400 as a sideman, collaborating with Mel Tormé, Leon Redbone, Peggy Lee, Madonna, George Shearing, Hank Jones and many others.

NATE RADLEY guitar

Brooklyn-based guitarist and composer Nate Radley performs with a variety of collaborators, both with his own group and with others. Equally comfortable in jazz, rock and country, Nate has worked with Adam Nussbaum, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, Chris Cheek, the Dave Smith Quintet and a variety of country and western swing bands. He received a Master’s in Music at the New England Conservatory and has studied with John Abercrombie, Bob Brookmeyer and George Russell. Nate performs frequently in NYC and has appeared throughout the US, Canada, and Europe and at a variety of prestigious jazz festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Atlanta Jazz Festival.

TERELL STAFFORD trumpet

Terell Stafford picked up the trumpet at 13 and pursued his training in both classical and jazz trumpet. His career was launched in the early ‘90s when he recorded and performed with Bobby Watson’s quintet, Horizon, a band he continues to play with today. Later, McCoy Tyner added Terell to his Latin All-Stars Band and, over the past 20 years, he has performed with the Clayton Brothers Quintet, Bill Cunliffe, Cedar Walton, Herbie Mann and Matt Wilson. Terell has released seven albums of his own and has performed on more than 130. He is Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University and a faculty member at the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies. This is Terell’s 20th year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

MARY STALLINGS vocals

Born and raised in San Francisco, Mary started singing professionally by the age of ten with her mother and two older sisters in a family gospel group. Soon she was performing with Ben Webster, Cal Tjader, Earl Hines, Rid Mitchell and the Montgomery brothers in Bay Area nightclubs. Mary then spent a year singing with Billy Eckstine, toured with Dizzy Gillespie’s band, and shared the stage with Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams and others. She enjoyed a three-year residency in the Count Basie Orchestra and later released albums with Gene Harris, Gerald Wiggins, “Sweets” Edison and Monty Alexander. Mary is a regular performer at leading jazz clubs and music festivals across the US.

BYRON STRIPLING trumpet

Born in Atlanta, the son of a classical singer, Byron came to prominence as lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra. He has played with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, and Clark Terry, as well as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. An accomplished actor and singer, Byron is a pops orchestra favorite for his popular programs focusing on Louis Armstrong, Mardi Gras, swing, ragtime and blues, soloing with the Boston Pops, Pittsburgh Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Toronto Symphony and others. Byron has also been a featured soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and on the PBS television special “Evening at Pops” with conductor John Williams.

GARY VERSACE piano + b3 organ

Voted a “rising star” on the Hammond organ in three consecutive DownBeat critics polls, organist/pianist/accordionist Gary Versace has released multiple CDs of his own and has appeared on more than 50 recordings as a sideman, including two of Maria Schneider’s Grammy®-winning recordings. His versatility as a musician has put him in featured roles with bands led by John Scofield, John Abercrombie, Matt Wilson, Lee Konitz, Ingrid Jensen, Adam Nussbaum and many others. Gary has also performed with Marian McPartland and was featured on her acclaimed NPR program “Piano Jazz.” Gary’s popular quartet, Guilty Pleasures, specializes in contemporary jazz versions of ‘60s & ‘70s hits.

TIM WARFIELD tenor saxophone

A native of York, PA, Tim began studying the saxophone at age nine, and was later selected to be recorded as one of the “Tough Young Tenors,” chosen as one of the top ten recordings of the year by The New York Times. He subsequently placed highly in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, leading to appearances with Donald Byrd, Marcus Miller, Shirley Scott, Kenny Barron, Terell Stafford, and Joey DeFrancesco. Tim was a featured member of Christian McBride’s group for five years and later joined forces with Nicholas Payton before joining and recording with the Terell Stafford Quintet, in addition to heading up several of his own recordings in recent years.

PETER WASHINGTON bass

LA born and raised, Peter started his journey learning classical bass, playing with a symphony by the time he was 14. Later he learned electric bass and began playing in rock bands before shifting his focus to jazz. He then played with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers before working with the Tommy Flanagan trio and Bill Charlap. Peter is also highly regarded for his work with vocalists including Freddie Cole, Karrin Allyson, Mark Murphy, Ernie Andrews, Anne Hampton Callaway, Marlena Shaw, and Ernestine Anderson. His playing is featured on nearly 400 recordings including those of Art Blakey, Kenny Burrell, Dizzy Gillespie, Cedar Walton, Terell Stafford and others, and Peter plays regularly with Renee Rosnes, Benny Green, Steve Turre and the Terell Stafford Quintet.

BILLY WILLIAMS drums

Virginia Beach native Billy Williams began playing drums at ten for his church and, since that time, has appeared on more than 30 CDs and appeared at prestigious jazz venues from NYC to Paris, Berlin to Bologna, Vienna to Doha. He has performed professionally with many master musicians including Cyrus Chestnut, Delfeayo Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Christian McBride, Benny Golson, Tim Warfield, Terell Stafford, and Jon Faddis. As an educator, Billy has been featured at the University of Wisconsin, Jazz St. Louis, the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, and as Jazz Studies Artist-in-Residence at Duke University.

MATT WILSON drums

A true jazz ambassador, NY-based Matt Wilson is widely recognized for his musical and melodic drumming style as well as being a gifted composer, bandleader, producer and educator. Known for his upbeat energy, sense of humor and ability to interject surprising turns into his and others’ performances, Matt has been an integral part of bands led by Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, and Lee Konitz, and has performed with many legends including Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvis Costello, Cedar Walton, Kenny Barron, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny and Hank Jones. Matt has appeared on almost 300 CDs including 14 as leader or co-leader and has conducted more than 250 jazz outreach programs including an acclaimed Jazz for Young People concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
