Vail custom duplex PIERCE ARCHITECTS Pierce Architects, with a history of over 35 years in the Vail community, was commissioned to create a 13,000 square foot duplex residence for an international couple with widely divergent tastes. Working closely with the clients and General Contractor, Bill Pierce brought together the husband’s desire for a house reminiscent of the French ski lodges of his youth and the wife’s wishes for a clean, contemporary look. The result is an eclectic house which incorporates the extensive use of wood in the public spaces, while incorporating clean detailing and finishes in the private areas. Located on the banks of Gore Creek in Vail, Colorado, living areas and master bedrooms open to the south to capture winter sun and views of the creek. Through careful site planning, the forms of the duplex separate and shelter the adjacent homes from each other while providing private outdoor spaces. The result is a home which meets Pierce Architects mission of creating Space That Inspires Living. Let us assist you in achieving your vision for a home or condominium that inspires your life. letter from the executive team Welcome to the 23rd Annual Vail Jazz Festival! Our organization was born of a passion for both an art form and a culture. Jazz is an American original—simultaneously cerebral and visceral, spanning geography and socioeconomics, race and heritage, age and education—it speaks to us all. In 1917, the first “jazz” record was released featuring the Original Dixieland Jass Band, establishing New Orleans as the epicenter of the genre. One hundred years later, jazz music is celebrated from coast to coast and around the world; it has defined cultures and catalyzed movements and, true to its roots, it continues to bring joy to audiences and artists alike. In 2017, the Vail Jazz Foundation presents a festival representative of this evolution, and educational programs that invite the next generations of jazzers into this rich tradition. The pages that follow are more than just a guide to the entertainment at your fingertips this summer, they are a testament to the jazz community at large—the world-class performers, spectacular venues, local and national businesses, dedicated donors, year-round and seasonal staff and you—that believes that great art deserves an audience, and that entertainment and education are not mutually exclusive. This summer, performers from 20 states and 10 countries (with over 40 Grammy® nominations and 7 wins) will grace stages throughout the Vail Valley delivering music that ranges from solo piano to big band standards, from Texas roadhouse romps to Brazilian samba and from sweaty soul music to Parisian gypsy jazz. More than 70 performances in 12 weeks will transport listeners from the majestic mountains of Vail to the streets of Cuba, São Paolo, New Orleans and beyond. These artists are not only world-class musicians but also dedicated educators, investing their wealth of knowledge, experience and acumen to ensure a vibrant future for jazz. The majority of the Festival performers are renowned educators around the world, and seven of them are a part of Vail Jazz! John and Jeff Clayton, Terell Stafford, Wycliffe Gordon, Bill Cunliffe and Lewis Nash comprise the esteemed faculty of the Vail Jazz Workshop {PG 66}, a program that boasts Grammy winners and career educators among the 250 alumni from its 22 year history, and local legend and internationally touring artist Tony Gulizia is entering his 20th year at the helm of Vail Jazz Goes To School {PG 70}, which delivers musical and cultural jazz education to every 4th and 5th grader in Eagle County. In recognition of the efforts of the faculty, staff and volunteers that contribute to these programs (along with Jammin’ Jazz Kids {PG 72}), we are honored to receive one of the most prestigious award in jazz education this year: The DownBeat Magazine Jazz Education Achievement Award {PG 69}. It is our pleasure to present the 23rd Annual Vail Jazz Festival, with musical and educational opportunities for the young and young-at-heart, locals and visitors, jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Happy summer,

Howard Stone Founder and Artistic Director

There’s a reason the prototypical jazz club is small, intimate, and a great place to sip a martini and chat between sets. In a small club, the palpable rapport—among players and patrons alike—creates musical synergy not always possible in larger venues. Ludwig’s Terrace in the luxurious Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail Village offers the perfect combination of intimacy, tempting dining and cocktails, and amazing entertainment. Outfitted as an elegant jazz club, the solarium offers great sightlines and acoustics for unforgettable musical evenings, replete with enticing dinner options, generous libations and enthusiastic, attentive audiences. It’s the perfect spot to experience world-class performances in an exclusive setting!

henry butler

JULY 12

Considered the premier exporter of the great New Orleans jazz and blues piano tradition, Henry credits his “sound” to a plethora of influences including the streets, his colorful mentors, his education and his willingness to take risks and explore musical boundaries. With an energetic, percussive keyboard attack, and a classically trained voice, he’s an exceptionally gifted tour guide through the realms of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B styles.

hot club of france tribute band

JULY 19

Few jazz legends have a more exotic mystique than Django Reinhardt, the three fingered Belgian-born gypsy guitarist and banjo player who led the legendary Parisian ensemble known as the Quintet of the Hot Club of France in the 1930’s and 40’s. Out of their sizzling, infectious, and swinging style, the musical genre known as “gypsy jazz” was born. An international quintet, led by accordionist, Julien Labro will bring the smoking hot gypsy jazz style to life in this exhilarating performance.

ella + louis together again—feat. carmen bradford and byron stripling JULY 26 Join Vail Jazz as we celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday by re-creating one of the most iconic pairings in jazz history: Lady Ella and legendary trumpeter and vocalist, Louis Armstrong. With the passion and swagger of Satchmo himself, Byron Stripling’s phenomenal trumpet playing and vocals are complemented by Count Basie Big Band singer Carmen Bradford.

rené marie + experiment in truth

AUG. 2

René Marie’s is the sort of voice which first comes to mind when someone asks for a jazz singer—big and expressive, at home in classic swinging settings and comfortable in crowds. There’s plenty to set her apart, though. She made her first recording in her early 40s, borrowing various elements of folk, R+B, and classical to create a captivating hybrid style.

exploring afro-cuban jazz

AUG. 9

This program is presented in partnership with The Vail Symposium. Cuban music has defined, and possibly helped to preserve, an isolated culture, ultimately influencing a global landscape of music. Dr. Michael Davison, a celebrated educator and performer, will contextualize this rich musical tradition through an era-by-era demonstration, with the help of members of ¡Cubanismo!, sampling danzon, son, cha cha cha, mambo and salsa. The presentation will conclude with energetic ensemble playing that synthesizes all the possibilities of Cuban music. vailjazz.org

Surrounded by boutiques, al fresco eateries, an outdoor bar and lots of convivial mixing and mingling, these world-class performances—more popular each year—are almost always sold out. With a large and intensely loyal global following, she has won a fistful of awards and accolades including several Contemporary Blues Albums of the Year awards. JULY 13

Henry Butler is perhaps the greatest living proponent of the classic New Orleans piano tradition. Steven Bernstein is a trumpeter/composer/arranger tour de force with eclectic talents beyond categorization. In collaboration to front the retro-flavored Hot 9, Butler & Bernstein’s critically acclaimed nonet offers spirited renditions of everything from Fats Waller to Billy Preston. Launching from a traditional New Orleans platform, they thoughtfully combine early 20th century blues with more modern spices to create exhilarating improvisations with their adroit cohorts, including Peter Apfelbaum (tenor/soprano sax), Vicente Archer (bass), Sam Bardfeld (violin), Donald Edwards (drums), Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), Erik Lawrence (baritone/soprano sax), Matt Munisteri (guitar), Doug Wieselman (clarinet/tenor sax). Local Business Underwriter: Vail Daily

hot club of france tribute band JULY 20 In a rousing tribute to the famous Parisian ensemble known as the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, Julien Labro has assembled a skilled international quintet to channel the wildly popular group—considered one of the most significant continental jazz groups in Europe. Hugely successful in the ‘30s and ‘40s, the group included the legendary gypsy guitarist/banjo player Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Julien, on accordion, is joined by guitar wizard Vinny Raniolo, Jason Anick (violin), Gary Mazzaroppi (bass), and Olli Soikkeli (guitar). Together, they will animate the smokin’ hot gypsy-jazz style in exhilarating ways. Local Business Underwriter: Vail Chamber & Business Assoc. vailjazz.org

ella + louis together again—feat. carmen bradford + byron stripling JULY 27 In celebration of Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday, Vail Jazz is re-creating one of the most iconic pairings in jazz history: Ella and Louis. Internationally renowned trumpeter/vocalist (and Louis Armstrong scholar) Byron Stripling will share the stage with Carmen Bradford, one of jazz’s most diverse and exciting vocal stylists. Her pedigree includes nine years as featured vocalist in the Count Basie Orchestra, as well as collaborations with Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, George Benson and many others. Together, Byron and Carmen will offer contemporary evidence of the musical pairing, considered by many to be the pinnacle of popular singing, that resulted in 3 hugely successful albums, recognized by induction into the Grammy ® Hall of Fame in 2015. Over a 20-year career, including 11 recordings, René’s performances have been informed by Dinah Washington, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald and other leading ladies whose explorations of both bright and dark corners of human experience have combined in a unique way in her stylings. Capturing two recent Grammy® nominations in the Jazz Vocal category, she draws on elements of folk, R&B, classical and country, to deliver strong, sensual, captivating song treatments in the best tradition of top jazz performers. She is backed by Elias Bailey (bass), Quentin Baxter (drums), and John Chin (piano). Local Business Underwriter: Eye Pieces of Vail & Mykita Eyewear

Hold on to your Fedora! The Jazz Tent at Vail Square may be unable to contain all the sizzling, pulsing, swirling enthusiasm generated by this energetic group of 14 musicians. After just a few minutes, it will be clear that much of their music is based on Cuban dances like rumba, danzon, son, cha-cha, pa’ca and others. Led with precision by charismatic trumpeter Jesus Alemany, ¡Cubanismo! offers electrifying performances drawing on Cuban musical influences in multiple genres. This tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Brazilian samba applies a cosmopolitan flair with her trademark percussive Brazilian groove, and her sensual vocals, to samba classics. (And those shoes!) With Rafael Barata (drums), Rubens de la Corte (guitar), Marivaldo dos Santos (percussion), and Marc Johnson (bass). Local Business Underwriter: Vail Mountain Lodging

the story of the jazz party FROM GIBSON TO STONE: THE EVOLUTION OF A UNIQUE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Written by Owen Hutchinson Jazz is presented around the world in many ways— subterranean clubs, elegant theaters, hotel lounges, backyard bashes, reminiscent tributes to The Jazz Age, open air festivals, and on towering stages at a plethora of jazz mega-festivals—but the most exciting, improvisational, and intimate format of listening to America’s quintessential art form is lesser known: the Jazz Party. Jazz parties dissolve the barrier between performers and audiences members, bringing fans and musicians together in an exchange of their passion for swing, soul and the freedom of expression. More specifically, the format of a Jazz Party is 30 to 50 individual soloists who perform throughIT’S JAZZ FOR out a multi-day event in a wide variety of both cuJAZZ LOVERS— rated and spontaneous HARD-SWINGIN’, ensembles, combos, musical themes and styles.

HEAVY-HITTING,

[AND] PROLIFIC This artistic formula was established in 1963 when Dick Gibson, a Denver businessman, gathered jazz musicians and friends in an Aspen hotel over the three-day Labor Day weekend to have a party. That weekend, he created the first Jazz Party. The format was established in 1963 when Dick Gibson, a Denver businessman, gathered jazz musicians and friends in an Aspen hotel to have a party. “During his 30-year run, Dick presented an all-star lineup that featured some of the greatest musicians in the world. At a time when rock music began to overshadow jazz, these annual gatherings became a very important reunion of sorts between fans and players in the most relaxed and awe-inspiring venues one could imagine,” says Vail Jazz founder Howard Stone.

In 1995, Stone transformed his appreciation for Gibson’s parties and his lifelong passion for jazz into the inaugural Vail Jazz Party, which will be presented in its 23rd iteration in 2017. The event has expanded over the years to comprise 11 sessions, 33 sets, and more than 35 hours of world-class jazz over Labor Day weekend. It’s jazz for jazz lovers—hard-swingin’, heavy-hitting, prolific straight-ahead jazz artists bringing their most passionate effort forth as moments in jazz history unfold before a crowd of discerning fans. The event is a convergence of the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains and jazz mastery, gathering 2,500 attendees at the base of Vail Mountain during a time of the year when Vail’s summer season peaks in a savory combination of sunshine and the crisp scent of the oncoming autumn months. Join us over Labor Day weekend as we celebrate the vibrant and dynamic state of the jazz tradition. Spotlighting contemporary sounds of the genre alongside tributes to your most cherished and timeless recordings, the Vail Jazz Party serves as a spectacular conclusion to the 23rd Annual Vail Jazz Festival.

vail jazz party special shows documentary screening: “buddy rich—jazz legend” FRIDAY AFTERNOON | 2:00 PM

Fiery, tempestuous, mercurial, prone to brawls and jealousy, Buddy Rich (1917-1987) is today remembered as one of the world’s most influential drummers, widely noted for his virtuosity, power and speed. Prior to his high profile stints with Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Count Basie, and later his own big band, Rich began playing professionally at just 18 months, as part of his parents’ vaudeville act. Despite his lack of any formal drum instruction (he claimed it would degrade his natural talent), he soon became the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world (after Jackie Coogan); by age 11, he was performing as a bandleader. His notable recordings included Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, working with pianist Oscar Peterson. His highly regarded trio work included bassist Ray Brown and Herb Ellis on guitar. He was a frequent guest on The Steve Allen Show, The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show and engaged in highly popular drum battles with Gene Krupa, Ed Shaughnessy and Louie Bellson. His influence extended well beyond jazz, {CONT’D PG. 44}

adrian cunningham’s cd release party: “jazz speak” FRIDAY EVENING | 7:00 PM

At last year’s Vail Jazz Party, Adrian Cunningham wowed audiences with his suave manner and sophisticated playing (not to mention his good looks!). It turns out he was so moved by the enthusiasm of the Vail audience, and the experience of playing with so many great musicians, he decided to keep the love alive by recording with several top Vail jazzers. The result is his new CD Jazz Speak—proudly being premiered in the US at this year’s Vail Jazz Party. Joining Adrian, who plays tenor sax, flute and clarinet, are Bill Cunliffe (piano), John Clayton (bass), and Jeff Hamilton (drums). Jazz Speak joins a half dozen other popular and well-reviewed releases by Adrian, and includes a variety of both lesser-known items as well as standards such as Mood Indigo and Let’s Fall in Love. We’re guessing everyone will fall in love with this new release.

piano duos

SATURDAY AFTERNOON | 3:00 PM Generously Presented by Judson and Joyce Green Expect some musical fireworks as these five “ivory impresarios” strut their stuff on the Vail Jazz stage! Inspired by the popularity of last year’s duo outing, the Vail Jazz audience is eagerly anticipating a new round of improvisational antics. We’re not sure this is what Wolfgang had in mind when he popularized piano duets in the late 1700’s, but this year’s combination of amazing piano artists—on two facing pianos—is bound to result in some remarkable, spontaneous musical moments, a few mind melds, some stunning contrasts and, no doubt, some entertaining keyboard capers along the way! {CONT’D PG. 44}

jeff hamilton + butch miles’ multimedia tribute to buddy rich with the h2 big band SATURDAY EVENING | 8:45 PM

Two of America’s great drummers—Jeff Hamilton and Butch Miles—contribute their formidable skills and insights about the unpredictable and entertaining Buddy Rich (1917-1987). Helping these esteemed drummers commemorate Buddy’s 100th birthday is the H2 Big Band, a world-class ensemble of 17 musicians under the co-leadership of trumpeter Al Hood and pianist Dave Hanson. H2’s energetic and precise performances are a perfect backdrop for an exploration of the fiery personality and—some would say insane!—drumming of this legendary stickster. The performances will be supplemented by video clips and interviews demonstrating the reasons for his renown, influence and undeniable “charm.”

niki haris’ gospel prayer meetin’ SUNDAY MORNING | 9:00 AM

Generously Presented by Larry and Pat Stewart Niki once again conducts one of our most popular Vail Jazz traditions—our annual tribute to the huge contribution Gospel music has made in shaping jazz and lifting spirits! Now a Sunday morning institution, this standing-room-only affair features world-class musicians and vocalists, hand-clappin’, spirit-liftin’ and look-to-the-heavens exhilaration for a rousing morning of invigorating musical commotion. As always, Niki and a host of jazz ringers are joined by The Mile Hi Gospel Ensemble, a golden-voiced group who invariably bring their “Sunday best” to Vail Square for a high-energy consummation of spirits.

byron stripling’s multimedia presentation: cole porter and the jazz connection SUNDAY EVENING | 8:10 PM

Cole Albert Porter (1891-1964), born in Peru, Indiana, was sent to boarding school to put him on track to be an attorney. At Yale, however, he found that music (he took his piano with him) and his ability to entertain made him popular, and his quick wit and gift for rhyme placed him in several campus-based music groups, the glee club and the famous Whiffenpoofs a capella group. While at Yale he wrote 300 songs and, despite the wishes of his wealthy family, took up music as a profession; shortly thereafter he was writing for Broadway revues. Unlike many successful Broadway composers however, Porter wrote the lyrics, as well as the music, for his songs. The hallmarks of a typical Porter song were highly urbane/witty lyrics combined with an often brooding, but memorable, melody. Equally typical and recognizable of a Porter song might be a simple, bouncy melody with a lyric based on a list of qualities or superlatives. Fearless of taboo subjects, his songcraft offered such an individuality of style, immediately recognized, that his new genre became known simply as “the Cole Porter song.” As one of the most notable contributors to the Great American Songbook (he wrote more than 800 songs), Porter’s works have been performed and recorded by artists ranging from Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, and Dionne Warwick, to Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, Nat Cole and Kiri TeKanawa. It can safely be said that few songwriters have had such a profound impact on American music, jazz or otherwise. {CONT’D PG. 44}

jeff clayton’s tribute to cannonball adderley SUNDAY EVENING | 9:45 PM

Julian Edwin “Cannonball” Adderley (1928-1975) moved to NYC in 1955 from his native Florida, where he had been a band director at a Ft. Lauderdale high school. While in NY, he happened to have his saxophone with him during an Oscar Pettiford performance, and when asked to sit in for a tardy band member, well... the rest is history. Rumors of his incredible playing flew around the city, anointing him as the heir to Charlie Parker. His blues-inflected playing brought him to the attention of Miles Davis, whose band he joined in 1957; the two graced each other’s albums for several years before Cannonball assembled a series of quintets and sextets with his brother, Nat Adderley on cornet. A major contributor to the hard bop and soul jazz movements, his groups delivered definitive renditions of the songbook, notably “This Here,” “The Jive Samba,” “Work Song,” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” Joining Jeff Clayton in this heartfelt tribute to his saxophone hero are John Clayton (bass), Bill Cunliffe (piano), Lewis Nash (drums), and Terell Stafford (trumpet).

mongo + more: tribute to mongo santamaria by tommy igoe sextet MONDAY AFTERNOON | 3:00 PM

Cuban-born Ramón “Mongo” Santamaría Rodríguez (1917-2013) was considered by many to have been the greatest conguero of the 20th century. Learning the rumba as a kid in the streets of Havana, he learned music—mostly derived from Africa—by observing drummers with many different styles and, as he began to play professionally, he learned on the job. When he soloed in jazz, his folkloric rumba roots were clear and he brought this sensibility with him to New York City where he became Tito Puente’s conga player, later joining Cal Tjader’s Latin jazz combo. Noted for his composition “Afro Blue” recorded by John Coltrane and others, he recorded a hit rendition of “Watermelon Man” and was a leading figure in the fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with R&B and soul. Celebrating the 100th birthday of this Grammy® Hallof-Famer, drummer Tommy Igoe and his band will honor the Mongo sound in this high-energy tribute to one of the earliest proponents of the Afro-Cuban sound. {CONT’D PG. 44} vailjazz.org

Each year in late summer, a dozen of North America’s most gifted young jazzers flock to Vail for one of the nation’s most highly regarded pre-college jazz study programs. Now in its 22nd year, the Workshop is conducted exclusively, and uniquely, without any written music, emphasizing listening skills, improvisation, and playing by ear. Over ten very long days and nights, these dozen jazz wunderkinds learn and perform in a high-pressure environment of talented peers, world-renowned instructors, and legendary professional musicians at the Vail Jazz Party during Labor Day weekend.

By anecdote, reputation and wordof-mouth, the 12 annual Workshop slots are among music’s most coveted scholarships for high school jazz players. The Workshop professors are legendary jazz artists including Workshop director John Clayton (bass), Jeff Clayton (saxophone), Bill Cunliffe (piano), Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), Lewis Nash (drums), and Terell Stafford (trumpet). Once again, there were a record number of Workshop hopefuls—more than 150 this year—vying to join the distinguished cadre of 250 alumni. Many Workshop alumni have advanced to highly successful careers, garnering Grammy® recognition, recording opportunities, and tours and performances at notable jazz venues and music festivals throughout the world. The success of our Workshop graduates, and their glowing accolades for the Vail experience, provide ever greater reinforcement for the stellar reputation of the Workshop as one of the finest performing jazz incubators in the world.

downbeat magazine honors vail jazz VAIL JAZZ FOUNDER HOWARD STONE AWARDED THE 2017 JAZZ EDUCATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Written by James Kenly

children ages four to twelve and their parents, running in conjunctoin with the Vail Jazz @ The Market performance series. The program is held weekly in July at the Vail Farmers’ Market.

Immediately following the first iteration of the Vail Jazz Party over Labor Day Weekend, John Clayton said to founder Howard Stone, “so we’ll see you next year?” This simple question catalyzed an epiphone, “I think I know how I’m going to spend the rest of my life,” recounts Stone. In the conversation that followed, the pair committed to produce an educational program for high school students to precede and integrate with the Vail Jazz Party. The next year, the Vail Jazz Workshop was born.

When Stone got the call from DownBeat in the spring of 2017 his response was swift, “I’m deeply honored, but I have to be very honest. This is an award that really should go to the educators.”

Now heading into its 22nd session, the Vail Jazz Workshop, still helmed by John Clayton as Director of Education, boasts 250 alumni including luminaries pianist Robert Glasper, saxophonist Grace Kelly, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, saxophonist Terrace Martin and a plethora of the genre’s most reputable young heavyweights. In 2017, the authoritative voice in jazz editorial, DownBeat Magazine, honored Howard Stone, John Clayton and the Vail Jazz Foundation with its prestigious Jazz Education Achievement Award!

On behalf of the Vail Jazz Foundation, we would like to extend the much deserved thanks to our world-class educators! The Vail Jazz Workshop instructors are: John Clayton (Bass, Director of Education), Jeff Clayton (Woodwinds), Terell Stafford (Trumpet), Wycliffe Gordon (Trombone), Bill Cunliffe (Piano), and Lewis Nash (Drums). The Vail Jazz Goes To School instructors are: Tony Gulizia (Piano, Program Director) Joey Gulizia (Drums), Mike Gurciullo (Trumpet), Andy Hall (Bass), Michael Pujado (Percussion), Roger Neumann (Woodwinds). Read more about the Vail 85}. Jazz faculty {PAGE

In addition to the Vail Jazz Workshop, the award recognizes Vail Jazz Goes To School and Jammin’ Jazz Kids which collectively reach over 1,400 students annually. In 1998, Stone and Vail Valley jazz dignitary, Tony Gulizia, created Vail Jazz Goes To School to bring jazz education to every 4th and 5th grader in Eagle County. Jammin’ Jazz Kids is a hands-on instructional clinic for vailjazz.org

69

Vail Jazz Goes to School begins its 20th annual program in 2017, a milestone reflected by the nearly 20,000 Eagle County elementary school students who have experienced first-hand how jazz music catalyzes creativity and influences culture. It is a learning experience combining music, history, social studies and the chance to learn about legendary jazz musicians and the eras they inhabited. Led by local jazz dignitary Tony Gulizia, the highly interactive format encourages 4th and 5th graders to “jump in” by playing and experimenting with individual instruments and ensembles.

This unparalleled, innovative program takes an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to the individual elements of music—melody, harmony, rhythm, structure—and demonstrates how they synthesize to become a cohesive work of art. The classes involve both demonstration and participation, and students are taught key concepts including scales, chords, and improvisation. By the end of the two-year program, the students write original blues lyrics and the instructors perform their pieces at an authentic jazz concert. Studies at Harvard Medical School assert that music training, particularly at an early age, increases the neural connections in regions of the brain associated with creativity, decision making and complex memory. Now, as the earliest of the Vail Valley students touched by this program approach their 30s(!), there is growing evidence supporting the positive impact that a program like Vail Jazz Goes to School may have had on those young, developing minds.

star-studded and sold out! MEMORIES FROM THE 2017 VAIL JAZZ WINTER SERIES Written by Owen Hutchinson Through a newly established partnership with the Sonnenalp Hotel, Vail Jazz presented four spectacular concerts at Ludwig’s Terrace throughout the winter of 2017. Transforming into an enchanting alpine listening room for Vail Jazz events, Ludwig’s is a pop-up jazz club like no other. This experience combines two obvious delights, exquisite dining and breathtaking performances. The series featured contemporary sounds by third generation Cuban jazz pianist Chuchito Valdes as well as longtime Vail favorite Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo in his new duo format with Italian vocalist Chiara Izzi. Nicki Parrott and Professor Cunningham delivered rousing vignettes of jazz music’s past, with Parrott’s tribute to the life and music of the great Peggy Lee, and Cunningham’s review of the the Jazz Age with his all-star quintet of NYC ringers. Two elegant evenings of music in luxurious Lake Creek residences brought upscale intrigue to the series, both high points of winter offerings. Known as Vail Jazz Soirées, intimate in-home events showcased the talents of saxophone colossus Eric Alexander and stars of Western Swing, Katie Glassman and the Snapshot Trio. Each of the six events were completely sold-out, welcoming many friends and faces of Vail’s winter scene into Vail Jazz’s community of listeners, supporters and regular attendees. With stunning reviews from all parties involved, the series will launch with an equal, if not greater, number of events in Winter 2018. Great skiing, world-class jazz, the charm of Vail Village during the winter months—the combination just makes sense!

Several years later he relocated to Vail, traveling the country and the world as a management consultant by day and moonlighting as an integral part of the Vail community, helping to establish the Vail Jazz Party as a one-of-a-kind event for artists and fans alike. In 2002, he began assisting with the Vail Jazz Workshop, and in 2005 he took the baton as the Workshop Director. This summer will mark his 15th year with the Workshop and the impact of his influence is demonstrated in the quality of an alumni network that includes Grammy® winners, Tonight Show band members and award-winning educators among its ranks. “It’s understood that a guy like John Clayton can play the bass and teach a bass lesson at the highest level, but when you witness the way that he listens, demonstrates and coaches - that’s what really makes the difference,” Wing says. “Watching the transformation in these students over such a short period of time is incredibly rewarding.” {CONT’D PG. 90}

SHAPE OF JAZZ {FROM PG. 89}

In 2011, Vail Jazz founder Howard Stone dubbed the venue for the Late Night Jam Sessions of the Vail Jazz Party, “Wing’s Place” in appreciation for his years of dedication to the Workshop. Over Labor Day Weekend, the First Chair Cafe at the Vail Marriott is transformed into “Wing’s Place,” an alpine jazz club, and is the final highlight of the program for students. Trading fours and riffing alongside their jazz heroes, the students sit in with legends of the genre—the headliners of the Vail Jazz Party. “The kids are shaking as they walk up there, but they deliver,” observes Wing, “and the audience loves it!” The Vail Valley is a special place to live for so many reasons—the natural landscape, the culinary offerings, and cultural organizations like Vail Jazz among them. It is the contribution by truly passionate individuals like Wing Mayer, that maintains and evolves this experience. Heading into his 15th year with the Workshop and 6th as Contributing Editor of the Vail Jazz Festival Program, Wing’s fingerprints are indelible on the fabric of the Vail Jazz Foundation and the Vail community at large.
