Summer 2011

President’s Message Seven years ago, the Vail Valley Foundation helped change the face of education in the Vail Valley with the creation of Success at Six, the program that ensured that Eagle County families with kindergarten-aged children would have the opportunity for them to attend fulltime early learning educational programs. This past May, the Foundation once again took yet another dramatic step toward preparing our children for their educational futures with the creation of Great Start, a new kindergarten readiness pilot program that will officially kickoff this summer. Great Start focuses on the idea that a child’s first step to their educational future actually comes from being socially prepared to enter kindergarten. However, education is not the only area in which we have experienced “great starts” over the course of the past six months. Summer is already off to a great start with an incredibly successful Teva Mountain Games, while our planning and preparation for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is well underway. We are also looking forward to a great start for cycling’s return to the Vail Valley August 25-26 with the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Vail and Avon, while early interest, as well as ticket sales, for both the upcoming Vail International Dance Festival and the summer season at the Vilar Performing Arts Center most certainly bodes well for a wonderful summer of culture and entertainment throughout the valley. While we firmly believe that Great Start will produce seven weeks that will change children’s lives forever, all of our programs certainly have the ability to dramatically impact the Vail Valley, making it a much better place to live and enjoy.

Record Crowds And Participants Highlight Tenth Anniversary Teva Mountain Games Summer in the Vail Valley got off to a tremendous start as the Vail Valley Foundation celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Teva Mountain Games with both record crowds and a new benchmark for participant registration for the nation’s largest celebration of mountain sport, lifestyle and music. Over the course of the four-day event, over 40,000 spectators crowded Vail Village and surrounding venues, providing for a dramatic economic kickoff to summer for merchants and an incredible festival atmosphere for all involved. “The annual Teva Mountain Games are a tremendous catalyst for Vail on a number of levels,” explained Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation. “They obviously represent a wonderful opportunity for outdoor athletes from around the nation, both professional and amateur to showcase their abilities and the event is a powerful economic engine for Vail. The Teva Mountain Games also serves as a great showcase for our sponsors to roll out the latest and

greatest in outdoor gear and accessories to a very receptive audience.” In addition to the record number of spectators on hand, close to 3,000 participants converged on Vail’s mountains and rivers to compete in eight sports and 24 disciplines for over $100,000 in prize money. The participant numbers marked a 10 percent increase over those registered a year ago, with new events including the Eukanuba Rocky Dog Trail Run presented by Ruff Wear, along with competitions that have been staples of the Teva Mountain Games for the past ten years. In addition, while the results were a year in the making, the Maui Jim Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Surf Cross, presented by C4 Waterman, race also made its debut at the 2011 Teva Mountain Games. Originally scheduled for the 2010 event, organizers were forced to cancel the competition due to extreme high water conditions on Gore Creek as unseasonably warm temperatures led to excessive snowmelt. FIS Gives Nations Team Green Light for 2015 World Championships The final piece of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships competition puzzle was put in place recently as International Ski Federation (FIS) race professionals Guenter Hujara and Helmuth Schmalzl gave organizers the green light to host the Nations Team event during the Championships on Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak.

FIS professionals Helmuth Schmalzl (second from left) and Guenter Hujara (third from left) with Vail Beaver Creek 2015 organizers.

With the 10 individual men’s and women’s medal competitions already slated for Beaver Creek, the decision maintains a Vail ski racing legacy dating back to opening of the resort in 1962. The decision is a result of consultation with the Vail Town Council, European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Tridem Sports, along with the FIS. The Nations Team event features a parallel giant slalom format, with fourperson national teams, comprised of two men and two women. The winning teams advance through a bracket format, with the final four nations battling for the gold, silver and bronze World Championship medals. In addition to the Nations Team event, Golden Peak will also be the site of the men’s Slalom and Giant Slalom qualification races, as well as the World Championships Opening Ceremonies and nightly entertainment. Scheduled from February 3-15, the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are expected to showcase athletes from over 70 nations, along with an onsite media and broadcast entourage of approximately 1,500 members, while an international television audience approaching 750 million people will watch the festivities. Vail & Avon Prepare to Host USA Pro Cycling Challenge Stages August 25 & 26 Major international road bike racing will return to the Vail Valley August 25 and 26 as Vail and Avon prepare to host two stages of the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge. Created to be the most challenging pro-cycling race in American history, the USA Pro Cycling Challenge is set to cover nearly 600 miles of Colorado’s demanding terrain during the course of the 11-city stage race, scheduled for August 22-28. Vail is slated to host a Time Trial on August 25, while Avon will serve as the start of the stage that will take riders to Steamboat Springs on August 26. The race will be similar to the Coors Classic, with a mix of mountain, sprint and downtown stages, with the Vail and Avon stages coordinated and hosted by the Vail Valley Foundation, the Town of Vail and the Town of Avon, along with additional interested individuals and organizations throughout the valley. Vail served as the site of annual criterium and time trial races for the Coors Classic from 1978-1988. During its 14-year run, the Coors Classic grew to become the fourth largest cycling event in the world behind the Vuelta de Espana, Giro d’Italia and Tour de France. Although professional road cycling left the valley in 1988, the Vail Valley Foundation brought international mountain bike racing to the valley with the 1992 UCI World Cup Finals, while also securing the 1994 and 2001 World Mountain Bike Championships. In addition to the racing action, Vail and Avon will be the hub of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge festivities during the two stages, with numerous family-friendly activities on tap.
