Golden Peak Base Lodge As a result of the construction in Mountain Plaza, the Teva Mountain Games is temporarily making the Golden Peak Base Lodge our base camp for athlete and media registration, in addition to VIP hospitality. The Golden Peak Base Lodge is located at the foot of Golden Peak near the Adventure Village, Eukanuba DockDogs events and the Larkspur restaurant.

Vista Bahn Gondola Vail will celebrate its 50th anniversary in December 2012 with the installation of a new, state-of-the art gondola to replace the Vista Bahn Express Lift (#16) in Vail Village. The cabins will be designed to carry 10 passengers and each will feature heated, cushioned seats and Wi-Fi access for guests. With a speed of 1,200 feet per minute, the gondola will be the fastest of its type in the world, creating a 40 percent increase in uphill capacity. Construction has begun for this project in the Mountain Plaza area of Vail Village, and will continue through the summer for its opening in December 2012.

Golden Peak East/ Soccer Fields Also due to the construction of the new Vista Bahn Gondola we have relocated the IFSC Bouldering World Cup, Eddie Bauer Citizen Climbing events and the first round of the 2 Fly X-Stream presented by Maui Jim to the new Golden Peak East venue. Locals know this area as the “soccer fields.” To get to Golden Peak East from Golden Peak proper head east on Vail Valley Drive for approximately 200 yards. The venue will be on your right.

Kayak: Bud Light Lime Steep Creek Championship presented by Thule Homestake Creek, Red Cliff Started in 2003, some of the world’s best paddlers risk the ¼-mile course down Homestake Creek where only the top 10 boaters in the male and female divisions advance after the first run. Race rules are simple. The fastest combined time after two runs wins.

Kayak: Bud Light Lime Kayak Freestyle presented by First Ascent International Bridge/Vail Whitewater Park The world’s best playboaters participate in a classic throw-down at the spectator-friendly Vail Whitewater Park. Kayakers have one minute to show off their best tricks in an attempt to impress the judges and the crowd for the highest combined score.

Kayak: Bud Light Lime Down River Sprint* Gore Creek Boaters shuttle out to the East Vail put-in and race three miles down the class II-III waters of Gore Creek to the Covered Bridge finish in Vail Village. With a rally race format – kayakers drop at timed intervals – competitors are racing against the clock. *Part of the GNC Ultimate Mountain Challenge presented by Kru82.

Kayak: Bud Light Lime 8 Ball Kayak presented by GoPro This is the whitewater version of a demolition derby. As many as 10 kayakers race through a 200–meter timed sprint and attempt to avoid being knocked out by the 8 Ballers, kayakers waiting patiently to attack and slow them down on their way to the finish line at the International Bridge. Think full-contact kayaking where rubbin’ is racin’.

Stand Up Paddle: Maui Jim SUP Surf Sprint presented by C4 Waterman Gore Creek Mirrored off the classic Down River Sprint, the race is on a timed three-mile stretch of Gore Creek from East Vail to Vail Village. Competitors must stand strong on the class II-III rapids of this course as low bridges, drops and wave trains make for some tricky paddling in the shadows of the Gore Range.

This challenging event on Vail Mountain has one of the largest cash purses in the mountain biking world. *Part of the GNC Ultimate Mountain Challenge presented by Kru82

SUNday June 3

Road Bike Time Trial presented by Thule* Vail Pass Competitors of all ages and abilities race on the original Time Trial course ridden by legendary cyclists such as Greg Lemond, Bernard Hinault and Andy Hampsten in the 1980s tour, the Coors Classic. Vail Pass Half By far one of the most difficult events, competitors run 13.7 miles with 2,900 feet of elevation gain from Vail Village to the top of Vail Pass. If you’re tough enough and have the guts — let alone the lungs — take a stab at the Vail Pass Half and see if you can earn the bragging rights.

Vail mountain The Vail Valley’s best trail runners, top professionals and everyone else compete at almost 9,000 feet. Round 1 – Golden Peak East (new venue) Round 2 – International Bridge Finals – an undisclosed section of river Professional and amateur anglers compete side by side in the preliminary casting round, which is judged on accuracy and distance. From there, the top 20 men and five women move to Gore Creek and again cast for accuracy from the river banks to a hanging target from the International Bridge. The top 10 men and the top two women move on to the finals held on Sunday. The final round is held on an undisclosed local river based on up-to-date water and fishing conditions. The location is announced on Saturday night for Sunday’s finals where finalists fish for highest count and fish size with only two fly patterns total. The angler racking up the highest points wins the grand prize and more cash is awarded for the largest single catch of the day.

GNC Ultimate Mountain Challenge presented by Kru82 The GNC Ultimate Mountain Challenge presented by Kru82 (UMC) is the ultimate test of skill, power and endurance where marquis athletes — many at the pinnacle of their professional careers — push through some of the most demanding races in the country, all in two days. The combined lowest times in four events determine the ultimate pro individuals (men and women) and the ultimate amateur teams (men and women). Saturday’s events are the Bud Light Lime Down River Sprint and the Volvo X-Country Mountain Bike. Sunday’s competitions are the Volvo 10k Spring Runoff and the Road Bike Time Trial presented by Thule.

FRIday June 1 - SUNday June 3

Dogs

Eukanuba DockDogs Big Air

Golden Peak Open to all good swimmers, the Speed Retrieve is a timed event that involves the pup jumping off the dock and swimming to a duck positioned at the far end of the pool. Once the dog retrieves the duck, the clock stops and the canine with the fastest time takes the prize.

Golden Peak

SATURDAY June 2

Eukanuba DockDogs Extreme Vertical

sunday June 3

The easiest way to imagine a DockDogs Big Air competition is to think of it as the long jump for dogs. The dog sprints down the dock runway, leaping off the end as its owner throws the dog’s favorite toy out in front. The canine with the longest measured distance wins.

36

Golden Peak If Big Air is the long jump of dog competition, Extreme Vertical is the high jump. A bumper is suspended ten feet above the water and the pup sprints down the dock, jumping up at the end in an effort to grab the toy. The dog with the highest measured jump is the winner.

Eukanuba Rocky Dog 5k Trail Run presented by Ruff Wear Golden Peak/vail mountain Racers enjoy a 5K run or one-mile run/walk on and around Vail Mountain with their fourlegged friends. Now in its second year, this event attracts dogs and people of all shapes, sizes and athletic ability. Participants are limited to one dog each and all dogs must stay on a leash for the entire trail run.

What’s TMG 2 U?

We asked our Facebook fans what TMG means to them. This is our favorite response.

I am not a local, but TMG means the world to me and my family. In 2008 my youngest son was diagnosed with autism and cerebral palsy. He was nonverbal in a morphine-like state. He had no smiles, no words, and did not know how to play with toys. Well, we took a family vacation to Vail not knowing about the games. The hotel manager told us about the event and off we went. We watched with amazement the bouldering competition, kayak tricks, and especially the 8 Ball races. What a blast we had! What we did not know was that TMG gave us our son back!!! We got samples from GNC and Larabar and gave these to our son Campbell. During the week we were in Vail our son spoke for the first time! My family witnessed our TMG miracle! So when you asked what TMG means to me... It means I get to hear my son talk about trucks and trailers (his favorite toy). He tells us when he hurts and he tells me, “ I love you mommy.” So the TMG means the world to me. Thank you.

Q&A

Who are these people? Superstar athletes dish on their sports, training and TMG By John LaConte

Josiah Middaugh

Runner, pro triathlete and Ultimate Mountain Challenge competitor

How does the UMC compare to some of the other difficult competitions you’ve done? This is a unique competition with true mountain events. Since each event is separated (not continuous), the intensity level is very high and with Vail Mountain as a playground, the terrain is grueling. Fond memory of competing at Teva? I had never kayaked before the first year of the Ultimate Mountain Challenge so that was the most intimidating part. I thought I would be more comfortable on the water, but I found out quickly how difficult it is. I used an old kayak that my brother had bought for $100 from a garage sale and it turned out to be a very fast boat. I taught myself how to roll in a local lake and I usually have to use it. One year I had to roll

Gretchen Reeves

Pro Cross Country Mountain Biker and Ultimate Mountain Challenge competitor Is the Ultimate Mountain Challenge similar to adventure racing? In a way, the Mountain Challenge is actually harder than doing an adventure race. The individual competitions are much more intense because we’re racing with all the pros who aren’t necessarily doing the Mountain Challenge. In an adventure race everything’s together, you go from one competition to the next and it’s a lot less intense because you’re doing it for so long. The way the Mountain Challenge events are broken up makes it very challenging in that respect.

three times during the race. There is a lot of action and anxiety above the surface, but underwater everything becomes calm and quiet. How did you get into enduro competition as a professional? The high altitude mountains of the Vail area have proved to be the perfect stimulus for me. We moved to Vail 12 years ago and I had an aerobic engine but no skills. I pretty much just followed along and picked up a few new sports along the way. I always want to compete against the best so as soon as I was good enough, I made the jump.

They have a lot to say— check www.vaildaily.com for the full interviews.

Any advice for an up and coming mountain biker? First and foremost, especially if you’re young, is to make sure you’re having fun. There’s a point where you’re so focused on the training where you forget you’re mountain biking, and mountain biking’s super fun. Another thing that can be really helpful is to work with a coach, and if you can’t afford a coach get some books on training and do some reading on training, because if you actually structure it a bit it really does make a difference. From there just pick some races and pick some goals for the year, watch how your body feels and take rests when you need to.

Ken Hoeve Steep Creek Challenge founder, kayaker and stand-up paddleboarder IIs there potential for boaters to be pinned on Homestake? Huge pin potential. The more water the better but regardless of flows there is always a number of places that will snag you up, flip you, pin you and spin you. You name it and it can and has happened there. Two years ago I dislocated my shoulder right in the middle of the race off one of the drops. I landed off the race line and tried to

just muscle it back and POP, shoulder came out. That creek has knocked both of them out of socket in my 15 years of kayaking it. You have to respect that place. Top Teva Mountain Games memory? My favorite memories always come from the 8 Ball. Top memory from it? Laying a huge hit on Steve Fisher, smack in the mouth with the bow of my boat, crowd goes “ooooohhhhhhh” and he simply takes the hit and paddles past me like I was a bug on his windshield. That dude is an animal.

Andy Lewis Professional slackliner How did you get into slacklining? One of my close friends showed me how to set up a rudimentary slackline and for some reason I had to have one. The next day I bought a slackline of my own, 65 feet of 1-inch tubular webbing and a couple a carabiners. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but that didn’t stop me. For the next year I developed an addiction to rigging and walking my slackline. I would even carry it around with me every day. For almost 2 years I literally had a slackline on me at all times. My addiction has barely subsided... What do you see for the future of slacklining/ what are you hoping for from the sport as it evolves? The future of slacklining is amazing! Longlines over 600 feet are being rigged regularly, with the record nearing 500 meters long! The highlines being rigged now are more than 100 meters long! Some of the most amazing progression, though, is seen in trickline. Flips, spins, off-axis rotation, hand-and-foot work, combos — this is actually a sport now. It’s crazy to think about inventing some of the tricks that are now standard in competitive trickline. What’s next? For me, I just want to continue to live the slacklife, push the sport, and do what I can to make it something that will carry on for generations. You will probably see me around doing crazy stunts, appearing on Chinese and Japanese TV shows, and maybe even catch me out in the desert. For right now I’m happy as a “pig in S#!%, and I would love to keep it that way.

In exchange for a small fee, everyone can get to shoot world-class action, with some of the best athletes in their respective sports. It is a great experience and it will give you a pretty good idea of what it is like to photograph events like X Games, Dew Tour or Crankworkx. Bike

Crazy endeavors on two wheels Summer and winter, extreme biking is king By Shauna Farnell

Excellent bike handling for most of us means navigating down a few rocks or maybe a couple of stairs without crashing. In Teva’s most awe-inspiring spectacle — the Slopestyle contest — it involves doing back flips and “no hands/no feet” moves while sailing 30 feet into the air off of massive dirt jumps and ramps. In last year’s first ever Winter TMG Big Air contest, it means even bigger tricks off of even bigger snow… with burlier tires. “Riding on snow, it definitely matters if you have the right tires,” says Teva biker Adam Hauck. “Sometimes you hit ice patches underneath the wheels and your front wheel can easily slide out from underneath you.” As slippery as they may be, these bike events and the courses that go with them have a certain flow to them. There is another event that deliberately has no flow. The setup is what course designer Jeff Lenosky describes as “madness.” This is the Freeride Dual, in which racers go head-to-head up AND down stairs and over objects not at all conducive or welcoming to a set of two wheels. The ramps look like enormous kidney beans — and when you see them on their own, you would never guess that they’d have anything to do with biking. “One thing that’s really cool is when I’m setting up the course and spectators come up to me — they have no idea what it’s for,” says Lenosky, 44

Freeride

“On (winter) Big Air, it’s pretty much just hucking it. If you stick it, the snow is very forgiving ... much more so than on dirt or on the ground.” who designs the Freeride Dual course and, even at age 40, is a top competitor. “The guesses are pretty funny. Some people are like, ‘Is this for the dog competition?’” Lenosky also built the enormous jumps for the winter Big Air event — and although he agrees that Big Air is a “wow” type spectacle, the Freeride Dual contest allows spectators to get caught up in the speed and precision

of the entire 20-second scramble. “On a Big Air, it’s pretty much just hucking it. If you stick it, the snow is very forgiving … much more so than on dirt or on the ground,” he says. “The Big Air is way crazier, but in the Freeride Dual, there is constant action and the spectators can line the course and pretty much touch the competitors.” Although it is a timed contest, going too fast can actually get you into trouble on the Freeride course. “When you add steep into the mix, you don’t have the ability to run out like you would in Slopestyle,” Lenosky explains. “What happens in the Dual Freeride

Winter Big Air

Summer Slopestyle challenge competition, everyone looks like they’re riding it nice and smooth — even when you’re riding, it feels

smooth. But when you make a mistake, it catches up with you really fast.” Making a mistake means a fast fall to a hard landing while competitor No. 2 on the other track accelerates to victory. Taking the obstacles in stride and with quick finesse is the ultimate key to success. “On a Slopestyle course, you’re designing it to ride properly, you’re designing a landing to fit the jumps. In Freeride, you’re actually making these things to disturb your riding. It looks easy to the spectators, but it’s not easy at all.”

In past years, the Freeride course lasted a mere 11 seconds. Lenosky has decided to ramp it up a bit for this summer’s Games, doing an out-and-back format — up AND down the stairs, backwards and forwards over the obstacles, requiring that not only technical skills come into play, but also a good set of lungs. The top athlete could be a BMX trials star, or a cross-country pro, OR a Slopestyle/ Big Air madman. That’s the beauty of Freeride. “It’s such a specific competition … unlike anything else,” Lenosky says. “You get to point A or point B as fast as possible, but you’re not trying to do tricks. You’re just trying to get over the roughest obstacles as smoothly as you can.”
