what’s new
For the Joes… AND the Pros
The Mountain Games has always strived to present a platform where the average Joes go toe-to-toe with the pros. With the uncertainty of a new event last year, and multiple new formats, we had to limit some competitions to only the pros. We were bummed too. This year things are different with citizen divisions or qualification rounds for many events including Telemark Big Air and Best Trick Bike. If you’re a Joe and want to throw down with the pros all you need to do is qualify.

Prep Your Pup
Doggone it! Bringing your pup to the Winter Mountain Games? Keep them happy and healthy with these tips from canine experts at Eukanuba, the ASPCA and Vail’s own Hair Of The Mountain Dog.
Winter Dog Tips from Amy Abling, professional groomer and owner of Hair of the Mountain Dog: ➮ Putting fish oil in the pet’s food will help with a dry coat and skin. ➮ Getting their feet and paw pads trimmed short will help keep snowballs at bay. ➮ If your pet has long hair, be sure to brush out the coat if it’s gotten wet from the snow, as the wetness combined with the dry air is a matted mess’ best friend.
➮ Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
➮ Another easy tip for keeping snowballs under control... use cooking spray such as Pam. Just a light spray will help keep the snow from sticking and it’s light enough that it won’t make your carpet greasy when your critter comes back inside!
➮ Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.
Cold-weather tips for your furry friends from the ASPCA:
➮ Feed your dog additional calories if it spends a lot of time outdoors or is a working animal. It takes more energy in the winter to keep body temperature regulated, so additional calories are necessary.
➮ Keep your dogs close on snow or ice, especially in a snowstorm. Dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other seasons so make sure yours always wears ID tags. ➮ Thoroughly wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice. ➮ Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.
➮ Like people, dogs seem to be more susceptible to illness in the winter. Take your dog to a veterinarian if you see any suspicious symptoms.
Stop by the Eukanuba Dog Village in Golden Peak for fun activities, contests or just to relax with your four-legged athlete. Check in to get expert advice on how to keep your dog in top condition from tooth to tail.

Skinny jeans seem to be all the rage these days but what about skinny tires? If it fits your fancy go nuts, but, in a race above 8,000 feet, on groomed nordic trails, in the heart of a Colorado winter think long and hard before leaving the fatty tires at home. It’s likely you’re going to need the extra junk in the trunk. A new event for 2013, the X-Country On-Snow Mountain Bike Race is a 10k or 20k race depending on how hard you want to push. Race em’ if you got `em - Fatbikes, XC race rigs, single speed rigid bikes, hard tails, full suspensions and/or downhill bikes are all welcome. Note that it does not matter what you race... it only matters that you finish.
On-Snow Bike Crit presented by Chipotle With its short-lap format, success in a winter mountain bike criterium requires cyclists to hold their own on a fast, snowy course that covers the lower portions of Vail Mountain. Wide tires will be the tool of choice for riders to navigate the varied terrain in this spectator-friendly, one-of-a-kind event.
Dual Slalom Bike Throwing caution to the wind is part of the game as preeminent mountain bikers combine precision with pure guts in this all-out speed descent on Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak. Head-to-head competition on a dual slalom course makes for a supreme battle royale to name the ultimate gear head.
Best Trick Bike This troupe of freeride mountain bikers go big or go home in a supreme winter test of flight and flare complete with a 40-foot fireball. The sky’s the limit at the base of Vail Mountain on this massive snow feature specially built for maximum air time. The biggest hits take home the cash in this comp judged for style and difficulty that is sure to be a nighttime crowd pleaser. Free Heels & Wheels: This competition will take place alongside the Eddie Bauer Telemark Big Air competition presented by Chipotle.

Bikes and Snow
Winter Mountain Bike National Championships Athletes compete for national championship titles in four on-snow cycling events. By Kim Fuller
For one weekend a winter, Vail’s recreation changes gears. With four on-snow cycling events in two days, the Winter Mountain Games presented by Eddie Bauer welcomes cyclists to stop dreaming about summer trails and tear up the snow. Who says snow and bikes don’t go together? This year’s new showcase is the 10K and 20K X-Country race, held at Vail Nordic Center on Friday afternoon. Other events include the On-Snow Bike Crit and the Dual Slalom Bike Competition, both held on Vail Mountain at Golden Peak on Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss the Best Trick Bike competition, returning this year to Golden Peak on Saturday night to once again offer terrific spectating opportunities, as athletes will be throwing big air and turning aerial tricks off a huge ramp, battling for their share of a $10,000 prize purse. “It’s one of the only events of its kind in the nation or in the world — there is really not a lot of big air biking on the snow,” says Paul Abling, senior marketing and public relations manager for the Vail Valley Foundation, which orga-
nizes the Winter and Summer Mountain Games. “The ramp is at least 80 feet long, and it’s a massive jump with a fireball.” Last year’s runner-up, Mike Montgomery, will be returning to the big air event to try and take the title. Other notable athletes competing in the bike championships include Aaron Chase, Nick Clarke, Wendy Palmer and Vail’s own Gretchen Reeves. This year, athletes can compete for a men’s and women’s national championship title in every event, making it more memorable for athletes and onlookers alike. “After selling out last year’s On-Snow Bike Crit, we are excited to offer cyclists a new cross-country race and the chance to be crowned national champion,” says Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation. “Going back to the World Mountain Bike Championships in 1994 and 2001, Vail has played host to some of the best mountain bike races in the world.” Folz says with the growing popularity of “fat bikes,” and riding bikes on the snow, the Mountain Games now offers some of the biggest and best winter mountain bike races in the country. Although these events will have a high level of competition, Abling says, amateur and emerging athletes can still get involved. “That’s one thing that we try to do at the Mountain Games is make it accessible to everyone,” says Abling. “Not only do you get to try a great course, but you also get to share the starting line with the best in the sport.”
MOUNTAIN CLICK PHOTO COMP We recognize the unique challenges photographers face in their creative pursuit to capture the spirit of adventure sports and the great outdoors. Amateur and professional shutterbugs are welcome and all competitors receive credentials for access not granted to the general public.
Once you’ve clicked your way around four days of athletes, art, music and mountains, submit up to three photos to be judged by our panel of professional sport and outdoor photographers in any of three categories; Vibe, Performance and Mountain Magic.
