In this year’s Annual Report, we asked our Chairman to share memories of his time in the position, as well as his view of where the organization is headed in its future.
t my very first board meeting, we started about 10 minutes late. At the time, President Gerald R. Ford was on our board and he pulled me aside and said, “Harry, you really should start these board meetings on time.” In the 70 or more meetings we’ve had since then, we’ve never once started late. It’s just one example of how influential President Ford has been to the Vail Valley Foundation. He brought credibility, and wisdom, but he also cared very much about what we were doing. He never missed a meeting—he was always there. We have accomplished so much, and had support from so many, in the past 35 years that it is difficult to encapsulate it all on these pages. What I can say, as I pass the baton to Ann Smead, and as I look at the work being done by Mike Imhof and the staff at the Vail Valley Foundation, and the ever-growing support that our community shows for our mission, is that I’ve never been more optimistic about the Vail Valley Foundation, or for its potential to make the valley a better place. Perhaps nothing was more enjoyable about being Chairman than working with our Presidents and CEOs: Ceil Folz, John Garnsey, Bob Knous, John Horan-Kates (our first) and Mike Imhof (our current). Each of them brought something different—and valuable—to the organization, and we have been very fortunate to have a consistently talented staff throughout the years. In working with all these folks, I always provided my own way of framing our mission: To elevate the spirit of the valley in arts, athletics, and education by bringing three groups together: individuals, businesses, and the government. It’s this special place in the community which allows us to think big, be bold, and take on projects that no one else would. A few seminal moments in our history stand out to me. The three Alpine World Ski Championships were tremendous successes, which really came from the vision of people like
02
Pepi Gramshammer, Bill Brown, and John Garnsey. I remember when Bob Knous called one day soon after the Iron Curtain fell, letting us know we had the opportunity to bring the Bolshoi Ballet to town. Now, almost 30 years later, the Vail Dance Festival puts us at the center of the dance world each year. Another major moment was the construction of the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, which had stalled out in 1986. We took over the project, raised the funds by bringing individuals together with public and private institutions, and we created a space that is now iconic to the valley. Since then we’ve done five major renovations, each one elevating the venue to a new height— and I think that’s reflective of our attitude that we can always improve, always get better. In education, the emergence of YouthPower365, in particular the PwrHrs programming, has been transformational for our community. Together with other organizations like Walking Mountains, the Vilar Performing Arts Center’s STARS program, and our public and private schools, we’ve created an incredible educational environment for our young people that will pay dividends far into the future. More than 6,000 children attend the STARS events at the VPAC, and this venue has become a special gathering place for everyone living in, or visiting, Beaver Creek. The challenge we face going forward is not to rest on our laurels. This community is maturing, it is coming out of its development phase, and this can sometimes produce a natural tendency to sit back and coast. I would hope that we continue to try new things, take risks. Some will work and some won’t, but let’s not play small ball. Let’s aim for the fences. And while we look for that next big thing, let’s remember—if we find it, that’s great. If we don’t, what we are doing now is phenomenal, and we can still think big and innovate in our current programs to find success. What I love about this community is that we are always getting better. We’re never satisfied. Let’s keep it that way.

Q: Ann, this coming year will mark your first as Chairman of the Board for the Vail Valley Foundation. How did you first become involved with the organization? A: My late husband, Joe, and I first became involved in the early 1990s in support of the Vail Valley Foundation’s “Success at Six” program. By the mid-1990s we had become “Friends of Vail,” and I soon began to truly value the depth and breadth of the programs of the Vail Valley Foundation. As I appreciated the impact of the organization’s work, I was delighted to be invited to join the board in 2004.
Q: What values do you bring to the role, and where do you see the organization heading in the future? A: First, I would like to recognize that the Vail Valley Foundation is very fortunate to be in a position of stability, strength, and heritage that is a direct result of the leadership and vision of Harry Frampton. With the strength of our staff, our community, and the many people who have contributed time, money, enthusiasm and expertise, we are in a position to build and grow this legacy. Our values will lead us to seek excellence in everything we do in support of our mission. With this in mind, the VVF will work, as we always have, to improve upon the quality and impact of every aspect of our programming while exploring new ideas for the future. Q: How would you characterize the Vail Valley Foundation’s role in the community? A: Most importantly, we are an organization that provides services to the community. As the valley evolves, and its needs and opportunities change, the VVF has always been able to change as well. Successful organizations cannot be rigid in their thinking – they must be thoughtful and remain open to possibilities. The VVF should have a plan but not be paralyzed by it; we should be willing to take risks without being reactionary, and we should look to our ever-changing community, as we have done in the past, to inform our direction. It is a very exciting time to be a part of this wonderful organization and our valley.

Q: Mike, one of the main tenets you’ve brought to your role is a renewed spirit of partnership with other groups, individuals, governments and businesses within the community. Why has this been important to you? A: I think the philosophy of partnership has always been there and is really central to the founding structure of the organization. Since its inception, the Vail Valley Foundation has been in a unique position to bring the community together to take on international-scale events, solve big problems, initiate special projects, improve education for our youth and raise the quality of life for all of us. However, we never accomplish this alone. It takes great partnerships to ensure that what we do is sustainable. The common thread of all our work, and what the reader will see in this year’s Annual Report, is that it is really thanks to the community around us, thanks to YOU, that we’re successful in our mission.
Q: What have been some of the highlights for you, and key developments for the VVF over the past year? A: The opportunity to work with Harry Frampton this past year was an absolute highlight for me. His vision and leadership of the VVF over 35 years has been of immeasurable value. A key development for the organization this past year was our proposal, and subsequent withdrawal, of the KAABOO entertainment event. The event was in lock-step with our mission and we believed the project was in line with the goals of the community we serve, but we soon realized that it was not an event our community was ready for at this time. The experience has definitely made us more intelligent about how we approach new projects for our community, and we are excited about new opportunities on the horizon. YouthPower365 continues to hit the cover off the ball, and our growth this past year was very strong. Our expansion plans and goal to serve every child, every day, 365 days per year, is attainable and we are making great progress. This past year, we also saw the most successful GoPro Mountain Games in history, we celebrated 10 years of brilliance at the Vail Dance Festival under the artistic direction of Damian Woetzel, and our Vilar Performing Arts Center had an amazing year of bringing an incredible collection of performing arts to life in our community. We’re also very excited to welcome Ann Smead to her new role as Chairman of the Board, Duncan Horner to his role of Executive Director at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, and Lee Jones to his role of Vice President of Membership & Development. It is simultaneously a new team, yet one populated with familiar faces. On the inside and out, the Vail Valley Foundation is doing extremely well, which I credit to the inimitable talent of my colleagues, and the gracious community, donors and partners who support us.

YouthPower365
Learning, powered up W
hen the final bell rings at the end of the school day, there are still several more hours before most parents will be off work. Amid the sea of colorful backpacks, thousands of kindergarten-to-8th graders throughout Eagle County make their way to get a healthy snack and start their YouthPower365 PwrHrs afterschool academic and enrichment programs. Within minutes, smiles appear as children step into a caring afterschool environment and take part in fun, effective, skill-building activities. Unfortunately, that end-of-day bell is also a division bell. For every child who is currently in our programs, there’s another waiting for their opportunity to take part. While some go into a world of learning and growth, others go into a world of uncertainty. The afterschool hours, and how they are spent, can be determinative in a child’s future. Of course, learning begins long before a child steps foot in a kindergarten classroom. Fortunately, our ‘PwrUp’ programs are better than ever. This year, we raised funds for two new Magic Buses. Our Parent Mentor program also allows us to take a two-generational approach to learning so that every child, and every parent, is kindergarten ready and equipped to be positively engaged throughout their educational journey. In Eagle County we have done so much, but we can do more. This year we’ve been engaged in the ‘Every Child, Every Day,’ campaign, which sets the goal of providing programming for every child that wants or needs our services. We have expanded to every public school, we are expanding our high school programming, we’ve raised pay for teachers who work in our programs, and strive every day to make sure our students are getting the highest level of instruction available. In cooperation with Eagle County Schools, Vail Valley Partnership, and Colorado Mountain College, we’re designing and piloting high school internship and apprenticeship programs that will ensure that every child will graduate career and/or college ready. Creating a better learning environment for our children requires support from all corners of the community. As we head into our 20th year, we send thanks to you: the teachers, the students, the families, the parent mentors, the coaches, the generous donors, our organization’s founders, and our partners in the community. Thank you for helping us expand services and improve lives.

Audi Birds of Prey and EverBank America’s Winter Opening
Racer ready in 3…2…1… I
t may seem simple to mark the precise moment when the Audi Birds of Prey World Cup race begins. Nerves crackle through racer number one as he loads into the gate. The clock stands at 0:00, the starting wand is struck, cowbells ring and the most exciting downhill ski race in the world is under way. In truth, the races begin long before that moment arrives. Sometime in October or November, the first snowflakes fall upon the 34° steeps of the second-fastest course on the World Cup tour. Bit by bit, inch-byinch, the Talon Crew begin their award-winning work to shape the course that is rated number one in safety by an independent survey of World Cup athletes. In Beaver Creek Village below, the preparations for EverBank America’s Winter Opening come just like the snow: in flurries. This festival has brought a new level of enjoyment and animation to race week, bringing new fans into the sport of ski racing and illuminating the post-race atmosphere. From concerts at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, to the all-new Beers of Prey seasonal tasting, to athlete appearances at the highlycompetitive (and equally entertaining) kettle curling competition, the EverBank America’s Winter Opening has already become the premier place to kick off winter in the Rockies. When the Vail Valley Foundation first brought the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships to town in 1989, it helped put the valley on the international map. Again during the 1999 and 2015 Championships, the world focused its attention on the drama, the successes, the heartbreaking defeat and the amazing personal stories that make ski racing fans so passionate about their sport—all of it happening right here in Colorado. In 2016, our beloved World Cup race week was canceled due to weather conditions. It is only the second time in 50 years of World Cup ski racing in Vail and Beaver Creek that this has occurred. Fortunately, we held a successful EverBank America’s Winter Opening, and are looking forward to the 2017 FIS Audi Birds of Prey World Cup race week Nov. 28 to Dec. 3. Through it all, our valley’s commitment to World Cup ski racing is a testament to our ability to unite behind big ideas. It’s thanks to you: the Talon Crew, the volunteers, the athletes, coaches, media, partners and businesses in the community, sponsors, and our dedicated staff, that we can proudly note that we have been named the number one overall stop on the World Cup tour by the same athletes who have the courage and tenacity to step into that starting gate, and strike that wand, on Beaver Creek mountain each year.

GoPro Mountain Games
To rise up, and then climb higher T
he 2016 GoPro Mountain Games may have been one of the most sensational, active, exciting and entertaining summer weekends this valley has ever known. From Vail Village to Lionshead, from the town of Eagle to the town of Red Cliff, the GoPro Mountain Games got tens of thousands of people on their feet to ring in summertime in memorable fashion. More than 3,300 athletes signed up and took part. More than 67,000 people (and a whole lot of dogs) watched the action and strolled through the streets. The rivers were running high, the sun was shining, and ‘pros and joes’ competed side by side in more than 30 separate events. This year was also our 15th anniversary. What began with a grassroots idea to merge athletes, art, music, and mountains in 2002 has now become one of the best all-around mountain experiences available anywhere in the world. In 2016, we expanded into Lionshead, added very popular yoga sessions, and introduced a mountain bike enduro in Eagle. We also saw tremendous passion from participants, not least the disc golfers, who sold out hundreds of spots in less than 36 hours. To top it all off, an historic crowd filled the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for a Stephen Marley concert (with special guests Bonfire dub), to create the most energetic concert atmosphere in Mountain Games history. This event is on the rise and ready to climb to new heights in 2017. More concerts at the Amphitheater, a souped-up Ultimate Mountain Challenge, and a few eye-opening new events are on the slate for the 16th year of the GoPro Mountain Games. In a world where many events are cut-and-paste, the Mountain Games stand alone as a true one-of-a-kind experience. It’s thanks to you: our municipal and federal partners, our actively engaged sponsors, and our sport specialists and respective federations, that we can successfully host this event each year. It’s thanks to you the athlete who trains each day to be ready for the event, you the volunteer who gives your time to help, and you the musicians and artists who entertain all throughout. It’s thanks to every paddler, runner, cyclist and doglover; every slackliner, yogi, disc chucker and beat-dropper, that people around the world can circle their calendars for early June and say, “Yea…that one’s shaping up to be the best weekend of the year.”

Vail International Dance Festival
A choreography of moments A
s the clock approached 7:30 on the evening of August 8, 2016, a form of improvisational choreography settled over the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. In the box office, attendants twirled past one another as they filled last-minute seating requests. At the gates, ushers rang their bells, places were taken, and latecomers whisked into the venue and hustled toward their seats. A bouquet of flowers improbably found its way to a ballerina’s dressing room. An intern, his immaculate black tie fluttering in the air behind him, dashed some much-needed thing toward Borgen Family Patrons Plaza. Slowly, a hush came over the crowd. NOW: Premieres had arrived, and the audience prepared to see something they’d never seen before…in fact, something that no one had ever seen before. New works in dance are among the many extraordinary elements of the Vail International Dance Festival that have come alive under the guidance of Artistic Director Damian Woetzel. In 2016, we celebrated 10 years of Damian as Director—and many more years of his participation in the event as a dancer. We also celebrated highlights from the past 10 years at the extraordinary Vail Dance Festival: ReMixNYC over four November nights at New York’s City Center. New York was as much in awe this November as we are each summer. The New York Times called the event, “Action-packed, stylistically eclectic and with deluxe casting,” and proclaimed that we are, “...lucky to live in times that produce creations and performances of this ilk.” This wealth of artistic riches is something we enthusiastically share in New York—and right here at home. From free dance events in the community, to our Community Arts Access program, to the free lawn tickets we provide for children each year, we have devotedly sought to eliminate socio-economic barriers and introduce audiences of all ages and backgrounds to the beauties of dance. As we head toward our 29th year in 2017, we do so with the wind at our backs. Our successes are a tribute to your lasting support of the Festival, and your trust in our process. It’s thanks to you: the donors and dancers, ballerinas and balletomanes, ambassadors and accompanists. Thanks to the volunteers, interns, ushers and investors...bravo!

It is an opportunity for our family to support the arts and contribute to what makes Vail such a special place to live.” — Sarah Johnson, Gold Dress Circle member
“Working as a coordinator in the volunteer ambassador program for the past three summers has been an amazing experience. I have been able to engage in the behind-thescenes side of performing and participate in the hard work that goes into producing the Festival, all while getting the unique opportunity to get to know many of the dancers.” — Colby Wilson, Ambassador Coordinator
“Our inaugural year for Community Arts Access outreach program exceeded expectations. It was especially gratifying to see our participants’ excitement watching the performances, sharing the experience with their families, and the gratitude expressed in being able to attend. I am deeply honored to be able to give our community this opportunity.” — Cathy Heller, Community Arts Access program manager

n a quiet evening, on the rare occasion when no show is on the schedule, the silent Vilar Performing Arts Center is an impressive sight to see. The stage is blank as a canvas, the seats arch away in 23 perfect, crescent rows, and the detailed Bavarian design and craftsmanship of the theater quietly resonate with a performance all their own. Watching the theater come to life is even more impressive. The first load from the 9,400-pound freight elevator initiates a whirlwind of activity. More than 15,000 pounds of equipment is artfully arranged to exact specifications for each new show, while as many as 55 stagehands bring big names in music, comedy, opera, theater, dance, Broadway, and more to a performance space that uniquely balances intimacy with production quality at the base of the slopes in Beaver Creek Village. Throughout the years, the VPAC has brought a diverse range of world class entertainment to the valley while also providing a regional cultural center. Through its STARS program, students are exposed to the palpable joy of experiencing the arts live and in person. A wide array of events, movies, guest speakers, and the Global Energy Forum keep the theater buzzing year round. In 2016, the Vilar Performing Arts Center community entered a new chapter in its history. Early in the year, Alexia Jurschak stepped into the role of Chairwoman for the VPAC. In November of 2016, former Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Vail Valley Foundation, Duncan Horner, was promoted to the role of Executive Director. The timing is perfect. The 2017-18 winter season will be the theater’s 20th, and the VPAC community has much to celebrate. Thanks to a strong team, a committed board, incredible donors, and a supportive community, the VPAC will continue to cultivate the cultural enrichment that has become a primary charactaristic of life in our valley.

Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater
A Town Center “Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.” –Ludwig van Beethoven
I
n those moments when we’re fortunate enough to experience music in the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, perhaps as accompaniment to a graceful performance at the Vail Dance Festival, or emanating from an orchestra during Bravo!, or billowing from the Marshall stack of a talented rock artist at the Crazy Mountain Brewery Hot Summer Nights, it’s easy to understand what Mr. Beethoven had in mind. Certain places lend themselves to hosting artistic events or public gatherings. At one particular bend in the river, with ski slopes to one side and the Gore Range to the other, the early Vail community soon found a town center. What began as an ad-hoc performance facility and communal-event grounds in the town’s earliest days became the iconic Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in June of 1987. Since then, the venue has undergone five major renovations and hundreds of smaller upgrades. In its most recent incarnation, it is now home to a covered social courtyard which serves to welcome guests, honor President and Ms. Ford, and host community speakers and events. In 2017, we celebrate 30 years of art, music, dance, symphony, speakers, graduations, ceremonies, and community at the Ford Amphitheater. During those 30 years we’ve seen big names like Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, we’ve saluted our nation at the annual Fourth of July concert, and we’ve listened in awe as the New York Philharmonic filled our valley with music to match our natural scenery. Perhaps, then, it’s fitting to mention another Beethoven quote: “The barriers are not yet erected which can say to aspiring talents and industry, ‘Thus far and no farther.’” This quote does a fair job of encapsulating the mentality at the Ford Amphitheater, where each year is a new opportunity to continue the beautification, care, and enhancement of this iconic facility; to allow artists the space to explore new expressions in performance; and to continue to be a place where our community comes together. For this, we send thanks to you: the staff at the Ford Amphitheater, our soundmen and stagehands, the musicians and guest speakers, the artists and dancers, the generous donors and patrons, the architects and builders, the groundskeepers and gardeners, the young children in the audience, their parents and grandparents, and everyone who plays their role, onstage and off, in making this venue the extraordinary place it is today.

Free Summer Concerts
A bold idea that’s built to last A
t first, it seemed like a radical concept: offer live concerts to the public, free of charge. Why? Because life is simply better when you can enjoy a free concert with friends and family once in a while. That’s all there is to it. Thirty years later, free concerts are a staple of life in our mountains. Come one, come all, come enjoy free summer concerts on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Vail Valley. In 2017, the Vail Valley Foundation celebrates the 30th anniversary of Crazy Mountain Brewery Hot Summer Nights, and we plan to do it in style. More music, bigger names, and a phenomenal lineup have 2017 shaping up to be the best yet at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. It’s a big year for anniversaries. In Eagle, we also celebrate 20 years of the Bonfire Brewing ShowDown Town free summer concert series at the Eagle Town Park and Centennial Stage. It takes bold ideas to create something new, and it takes community support to make it last. As we celebrate these milestones in our concert series, we also send thanks to the people, artists, sponsors, underwriters, and municipal and private-sector institutions who partner with us in this endeavor. It’s thanks to you that we are able to host weekly summer shows, throughout our valley, that all of us can enjoy…at a price that’s hard to argue with.
Music lovers of all ages are welcome at our free summer concert series. Photos by John Ryan Lockman.

or 11 years, Lee Jones wore many different hats for the Vail Valley Foundation’s YouthPower365. In September of 2016, Lee became Vice President of Membership & Development at the Vail Valley Foundation. We asked him to share some of his memories, and ideas, with us.
Q: You’re originally from Manchester, England. What brought you to the Vail Valley? A: I came here in 2001 while waiting to start a new job in Australia. I planned to stay 6 months! Immediately I could tell that there was something about this place—I felt like I belonged here. I’ve been to around 50 countries, but the way I was treated by the people here, and the strong sense of community, just made me feel that this was the place I was supposed to be. The more time I spent here, the more I felt that this was a community that I wanted to give back to. I started coaching soccer, and that’s how I became involved in YouthPower365. Q: What is it about the Vail Valley Foundation that makes it a special organization? A: The people. Every person who gives their time, treasure or talent to be a part of our arts, athletics and education efforts is considered a part of this organization, and we appreciate every one of them. Being the vehicle that mobilizes a community to benefit its constituents is truly the most special part of what we do.
Q: You were a central figure at YouthPower365 for the past 11 years. Was it difficult to make the transition to Vice President of Membership & Development? A: It was the right thing to do, and the right time. I am very pleased and honored to take on this new role, where I seek to continue to make a greater positive impact on the young people in our valley. The Vail Valley Foundation is really an expression of the volunteer spirit and generosity of this community, and I find it very gratifying to work directly with the people who make it all possible. Q: What are some of the guiding principles you bring to your new role at the Foundation? A: I’ve always believed in two things: hard work and investing in people. The people I previously mentioned work hard to make this community a better place to live, and we are very proud of being part of that. We believe we invest in the people of this community, and we are hopeful and grateful that they invest in us, too.

he Nottingham name has been associated with the local community for more than a century. Keepers of the ranch that filled the valley in the area now known as Avon, the Nottinghams have a long legacy of contributing to the community around them, even as decades of change have re-made and redefined Eagle County. In 2016, Mauri and Nancy Nottingham were given the Vail Valley Foundation’s “Volunteer of the Year” award. The couple received the award at a ceremony at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater during the Vail International Dance Festival in August 2016—the perfect setting for the occasion, not least because Nancy volunteered in the first year of the Festival. Mauri Nottingham was born in Avon on the Nottingham Ranch in 1930. Nancy and Mauri met at the University of Colorado Boulder and were married in 1956. In 1968, they became well known in Vail as owners of the Talisman Lodge near the International Bridge (where One Willow Place is located now). Mauri was very active as a gate keeper and FIScertified starter for Nor-Am and World Cup ski races. By the 1989 World Championships, he was lead gatekeeper for the event. In an era before personal computers, Mauri built, developed and coded a computerized inventory system for Ski and Snowboard Club Vail’s Ski Swap—the first of its kind—and later developed a bar-code and tagging system that was well ahead of its time. These were only some of the innovative contributions he made to the community in Vail. In the early ’90s, Mauri founded “We Recycle,” the valley’s original recycling program. He has volunteered for the Eagle Valley Community Fund’s Rummage Sale since the early ’80s, and he volunteered each year for the Eagle River Clean-up and annual highway clean-up. Nancy has been an unfaltering volunteer across a wide spectrum of activities, but she has a special fondness for her work with the Rummage Sale, which used to be known as the “Vail Sale” when the idea was first hatched in 1964. Nancy continues to volunteer more than 1,000 hours per year to the EVCF Rummage Sale effort, the proceeds of which are distributed to local nonprofits, schools, teams and other charitable organizations. Nancy has also served as a 4-H leader, was on Eagle County School District’s first District Accountability Committee, helped found Battle Mountain High School’s first PTA in 1984, and was an active member of Caring For Kids in the early 2000s. She is also still a volunteer usher at the Vilar Performing Arts Center. For Nancy and Mauri, volunteer work is a part of their life—and always has been. Today’s Eagle County has a spirit of volunteerism about it, and Mauri and Nancy are among those who clearly deserve credit for establishing that culture early on, and encouraging those around them to take part in building a better community as well.

his year, the prestigious 2016 Vail Valley Citizens of the Year Award has been awarded to Mary Sue and Mike Shannon. The Shannons arrived in Vail in 1985 and immediately became immersed in the artistic, cultural, and athletic programs that are now mainstays of the community, and have generously supported valued Vail Valley Foundation programs like the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, Success at Six and the Alpine World Ski Championships over the years. “We came here like everybody, for the snow and the promise of a job early on in our 20s… now we have three generations of family involved,” said Mike. “Vail has a history of young dreamers who fall in love with the place, then stay and help build the next generation.” Mike Shannon has served on the Vail Valley Foundation Board of Directors since 1985, and was the President of Vail Associates at the age of 27. In addition to his Board Chairmanship of KSL Capital Partners, he also serves as Chairman of the Board of the Vail Valley Medical Center and Vail Health Services. Mike and Mary Sue have been tremendous supporters of all of the Vail Valley Foundation’s projects. They played a critical role in the creation and subsequent remodeling of the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, they have long been patrons of the arts via their support of the Vilar Performing Arts Center and the Vail Dance Festival, and they have contributed generously to the growth of the Foundation’s education programming. Along with their work via the Vail Valley Foundation, Mary Sue and Mike have been committed to philanthropy in healthcare, environment, education and other areas as well. They both serve on the Mayo Clinic Global Advisory Council and support its Center for Regenerative Medicine. They were also instrumental in establishing regenerative medicine research in Vail through the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. Both Shannons have been involved in the successes of many Vail Valley area philanthropic efforts such as the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, Walking Mountains Science Center, Castle Peak senior center, St. Patrick’s Church, as well as many other local organizations. As strong advocates of early childhood education and the involvement of parents in a child’s cognitive, social and emotional development, the Shannons also focus on their deep-rooted education philanthropy, in part by supporting the Foundation’s YouthPower365. The Shannons’ immediate family includes son Tim Shannon and daughter-in-law Susanna Johnson Shannon; granddaughter Mary Adair and grandson George, who live in Denver; their daughter Kelly Shannon, who lives in Chicago; and daughter Kerry Shannon-Pearson and son-in-law Robbie Pearson, of Darien, Connecticut. We congratulate them on a lifetime of philanthropy and service.

At the 2016 Star Dancing Gala in July, we honored the first recipients of our Education Legacy Award, recognizing those who have helped YouthPower365 get started and who are integral in helping to bring us to where we are today. Our first annual Education Legacy Award recipients are:
The Borgen Family
The Borgen family have been residents of Vail since 1966. If there is a person who epitomizes the phrase, "Realizing the American Dream," it is Bjorn Erik Borgen. As a 12 year old, he emigrated from Norway to the small town of Strum, Wisconsin, where he learned English and flourished under the individualized attention and opportunities available to him through the local public schools. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin, later completed his MBA at Harvard Business School and went on to a very successful career in entrepreneurship and investment. Erik and his wife, Kathy, have three children: Kaia, Randi and Jon-Erik, and 10 grandchildren. The entire Borgen family makes charitable giving a priority, with a focus on educational projects. The Borgen family has given more than $3 million to Vail Valley Foundation educational initiatives, making it possible for students in Eagle County to be afforded opportunities that are otherwise out of reach. Their commitment to the future of children in Eagle County is inspirational.
Ann Smead and Michael Byram
Not long after receiving this award in July, 2016, Ann was named the Vail Valley Foundation’s incoming Chairman of the Board. She also served on the Board of the Vail Mountain School, where she was Board Chair from 2014-16, and where her four granddaughters attend. Prior to retiring in 2006, Michael was the president and CEO of the University of Colorado Foundation. Ann and Michael’s personal investment of their time and passion, in addition to their financial gifts, make them a wonderful model for giving in our community.
The Tang Family
The Tang family have been enjoying the Vail Valley community since 1970. Originally from Shanghai, Oscar and his parents were forced to flee China in 1949 at the end of the Chinese civil war. He was sent to school in the United States at the age of 11, eventually attending Phillips Academy, Andover. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Yale University and an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School. Oscar, his wife, Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang, his four children and 11 grandchildren, are committed to the transforming role that education, art and culture can play in enhancing the position of underserved children. Oscar and his family have set an example for philanthropy in our community and beyond and encourage others through leadership in education.
