ear Friends, It is with gratitude that we welcome you to Vail Dance Festival’s 34th season with dozens of performances and events across the Vail Valley, deep in the heart of the beautiful Colorado Rockies. As we collectively emerge from the tumultuous last two years into a summer of renewed optimism, we are reminded of the community-building power of the arts that unite us in our shared humanity. Creativity and curiosity are the hallmarks of our Festival and we hope that what you experience here — whether on our stages, in the streets, or in our studios — inspires you and creates lasting memories into the future. The New York Times has raved that “in quantity and quality, the lineup of worldclass dancers who perform at the Vail Dance Festival is as awe-inspiring as this town’s alpine scenery.” We build on that each year, and we are excited to welcome new and returning friends to the Vail Valley in this year’s alignment of talent and artistry. Performance highlights this summer include the Limón Dance Company making its Vail debut as part of its 75th anniversary season, the return of New York City Ballet MOVES, and the Festival premieres of DanceAspen and Ephrat Asherie Dance. In addition to the dancers and musicians we will be featuring from around the world, we are grateful to be able to host four young dancers displaced by the war in Ukraine as our Scholars-In-Residence this season. And please join us in welcoming choreographer and dancer Caili Quan and New York City Ballet soloist Roman Mejia as this year’s Artists-in-Residence, and Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw as our returning Composer-in-Residence. This season, we are proud to reach and surpass our 100th world premiere dance commission since the 2007 Festival. Marking this milestone, we will present the world premieres of dynamic new works from a roster of predominately female choreographers including Pam Tanowitz, Ephrat Asherie, Jodi Melnick, Claudia Schreier, Bobbi Jene Smith, Tiler Peck, Caili Quan, as well as a new work by Justin Peck in collaboration with bluegrass artist Chris Thile.

Master Classes heck the calendar on pages 22–23 C for dates and times. From July 28-August 9, advanced-level dance students may take advantage of up to two classes per day at Vail Mountain School. This summer’s Master Class series offers an array of classes taught by Festival artists in ballet, tap, jazz, repertory, and more. This year’s lineup also includes ballroom and movement classes for adult participants.

�� Expanded Scholar-In-Residence Program Responding to the need to support young artists affected by the unprovoked war and resulting humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the 2022 Festival will host four Ukrainian Scholars-In-Residence, expanding the program to give these displaced young dancers the opportunity to study in the United States this summer. Since the onset of the war in March, these four aspiring ballet dancers have been studying in schools in Europe which are closed in the summer, and with no safe way to return home at this time, they will be our guests in Vail during the Festival. Please help us welcome Polina Chepyk, Alisa Garkavenko, Yelyzaveta Lazovska, and Skorenka Yeva-Mariia.

Community Arts Access Access to the arts for all

• We partner with local nonprofits to distribute complimentary tickets to Vail Dance Festival performances. • Children 12 and under receive free access to the lawn with the purchase of an adult ticket (for performances at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater). • Students and faculty may purchase discounted lawn tickets for $10 (for performances at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater). • Dance for $20.22 is a specially-priced evening devoted to arts accessibility. Reserved pavilion seats are $20.22 each and lawn tickets are $10.22 each.

Intern & Ambassador Programs Engaging the next generation of arts leaders

Ambassador Program The Ambassador Program provides a unique, hands-on opportunity for current 8th through 12th graders. Ambassadors work closely with the Festival staff and are able to contribute to many different areas of the Festival’s on-site operations. Intern Program Every year, the Festival engages ambitious graduate and undergraduate students and young professionals from around the country who serve as members of the Festival intern team. Interns support a variety of areas including artist hospitality, media/communications, education/ outreach, venue/rehearsal management, transportation/logistics, food/beverage, and development. This is a unique opportunity for interns to work behind-the-scenes alongside some of the world’s greatest dancers, choreographers, and artistic leaders, and has launched numerous professional careers in the arts.

Where do the performances take place? Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater

503 S Frontage Road East, Vail, CO 81657 The Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater (GRFA) in Vail is operated by the nonprofit Vail Valley Foundation and is a spectacular outdoor venue that seats 1,265 guests in covered pavilion seating and an additional 1,235 on its expansive grassy hillside with a breathtaking view of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Seating: Covered pavilion seating is reserved. General Admission lawn seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Legless chairs are permitted on the lawn. The GRFA provides reasonable accommodations to persons with disabilities, including those with limited mobility. Parking: The closest free parking is at the Vail Village parking structure. Limited paid parking is available at the Ford Park parking lot on a first-come, first-served basis. Getting to the GRFA: Walking - From the Vail Village parking structure, exit to the east, then walk northeast down the S Frontage Road E sidewalk toward the softball fields until you see the paved walkway into the park on your right. Follow the path down to the GRFA. Shuttle - A complimentary express shuttle to Ford Park is also available from the top levels of both Town of Vail parking structures during the Festival.

Getting to the VPAC: Beaver Creek Shuttle from lower lots - Park, walk or ECO bus to the lower Beaver Creek Village lots (Elk and Bear) and hop on the complimentary transportation Beaver Creek Village shuttle. Staying in Beaver Creek? Try the DialA-Ride Shuttle Service, a complimentary door-to-door, shared ride transportation within the Beaver Creek and Bachelor Gulch villages. Located in Avon, the Performance Pavilion at Nottingham Park is a year-round cultural and entertainment venue for festivals, concerts, art exhibitions, theater performances, educational events, and more. Seating: Open-air seating is available on an expansive grasscovered lawn and is perfect for audiences of all ages. Limited bleacher seating is provided, however attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, umbrellas, and picnics to make the experience even better! Festival performances will take place rain or shine. Parking & Restrooms: Public restrooms are located adjacent to the venue in Nottingham Park. Nearby free parking is available.

What should I wear? Audiences wear anything from mountain casual to semi-formal. It’s totally up to you! Keep in mind that summertime in Vail is beautiful, but it does cool off quickly once the sun goes down. We recommend bringing layers and even a blanket for cooler evenings. Festival performances will take place rain or shine.

Vilar Performing Arts Center

68 Avondale Lane, Beaver Creek, CO 81620 The Vilar Performing Arts Center (VPAC) in Beaver Creek is a 530-seat theater that is operated by the nonprofit Vail Valley Foundation and presents a variety of year-round performances including concerts, Broadway, family entertainment, comedy, classical, dance, film and more. Artists-In-Residence Fly to Great Heights

his summer’s Vail Dance Festival highlights two Artists-In-Residence: dancer and choreographer Caili Quan and New York City Ballet (NYCB) soloist Roman Mejia. The residency offers opportunities for tailored enrichment of these rising artists, who this year complement each other in their embodiment of the spirit of the Festival. Both are admired for their infectious enthusiasm, thirst for challenge, and pure passion for moving to music. Dance is in —Caili Quan their bones. Mejia’s father, himself a former NYCB soloist, described his son “dancing in diapers,” showing an uncanny musicality from a young age. Quan, who grew up in Guam, credits the Pacific island and its culture of community celebrations for instilling dance in her DNA. Quan first performed at the Festival with BalletX in 2014. Her quick ascent as an in-demand choreographer results from seven rich years dancing with the esteemed Philadelphia-based contemporary ballet company. “At BalletX,” Quan says, “I was part of 30 premieres, and that creative process was where I really fell in love with choreography.

“I’m always trying to come back to the joy of moving and to create processes that nurture artists.”

BalletX was my life school.” It was representing BalletX that she presented her first choreographic work at the Festival in 2018. This summer as Artist-In-Residence, Quan will share her talent through performing, teaching, and choreographing. Like BalletX’s vast repertoire itself, Quan incorporates numerous styles and influences into her works, all building from a strong foundation in ballet. “I love ballet,” she says. “There’s something about that effortlessness and euphoria in executing a step just right.” Yet before studying ballet in New York City, Quan brightly recalls memorizing music videos from VHS tapes in her living room as a young girl. This omnivorous appetite for dance has centered music and the dancers in front of her at the core of her choreography. “I love the collaborative process and watching how the body responds to music,” she says. “I’m always trying to come back to the joy of moving and to create processes that nurture artists.”

Mejia exudes a similar zeal for dance. The 22-year-old Texas native describes himself as an “adrenaline junkie,” addicted to “that feeling of flying” that is full-out dancing. Artistic Director Damian Woetzel first invited the Princess Grace Awardee to the Festival in 2017, while he was still a student at the School of American Ballet, the official school of NYCB. One month later, he was invited to join the company. “You can’t teach this thing that makes you want to watch someone dance,” remarked principal ballerina Tiler Peck, who has danced frequently with Mejia over the past few years in Vail and increasingly in New York and elsewhere. The purpose of the Artist-In-Residence program is to challenge promising artists in a nurturing environment specific to their talents and potential. Mejia, who is the Festival’s youngest ever Artist-InResident, has already tackled roles beyond his age in Vail. From premiering in George Balanchine’s ebullient Tarantella alongside ballerina Lauren Lovette, to venturing into new creative terrain with contemporary ballet master Alonzo King, he continues to inspire

audiences. His performance of the Alexei Ratmansky solo Fandango, originally created for NYCB star Wendy Whelan, and later danced by Sara Mearns, led the choreographer to compare Mejia’s “great energy and attack, and fantastic technique” to the legendary dancer Edward Villella. Ever looking forward, Mejia remains his own biggest motivation. “You’re only as good as your last show,” he recalls his mother’s advice. “You can’t just keep going out there. You have to keep getting better.” The opportunities for enrichment offered to this summer’s Artists-In-Residence will be equally rewarding for audiences. Mejia will take on new roles including José Limón’s landmark solo Chaconne, and Quan will be busy onstage and off, creating a new solo for Mejia. From exciting new collaborations to performing iconic roles, Festival goers will get to witness two of the dance world’s brightest rising talents. Quan and Mejia’s individual and unique passion for dance can only bring them to even greater heights in the heady altitude of Vail.

Three dance companies will make their Festival debuts this summer

osé Limón (1908 – 1972), Mexican-born pioneer of American modern dance and one of the 20th century’s greatest artistic voices, stated “we are never more truly and profoundly human than when we dance.” This essence of humanity and urgency pulses throughout modern and contemporary dance forms and is uniquely expressed with each generation of dancers and choreographers. In the Festival premiere of three remarkable dance companies this summer, with a collective presentation of dance works across nine decades, this expression of shared humanity will be on full display through each ensemble’s diverse dance vocabulary, enduring individuality, and forward-facing momentum. The Vail Dance Festival will welcome the renowned Limón Dance Company, currently in its 75th anniversary season, along with New York’s critically acclaimed Ephrat Asherie Dance, and the newly formed DanceAspen. Each has a unique story to tell. Founded by dance titans José Limón and Doris Humphrey (1895 – 1958), the Limón Dance Company is one of the most significant dance legacies in the world. After immigrating from Mexico to Los Angeles at a very young age, Limón later moved to NYC to study visual art, and shortly after discovered a new direction in dance. In 1946 he founded his New York-based company, with his mentor Humphrey as Artistic Director, to bring the newly emerging art of American modern dance to the masses. Limón and his company quickly grew in popularity nationally and internationally, touring under José Limón performs Chaconne. the sponsorship of the US State Photo by Walter Strate. A powerhouse for decades that has inspired generation after generation, the Limón Dance Company received the National Medal of Arts for Lifetime Achievement in 2008. Described as “breathtaking” by The New York Times and widely acclaimed for its dramatic expression and storytelling, the Limón company will make a preview appearance on Opening Night, July 29, before headlining its Festival debut program, also at the Gerald R. their engagement will include Limón’s Psalm (1967, restaged 2002), inspired by the mystical Jewish legend of The Righteous, and two works that pre-date the founding of the company, including Doris Humphrey’s Air for the G String (1928) set to Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, and Limón’s powerful solo Chaconne (1942) to be danced by New York City Ballet soloist, and 2022 Festival Artist-InResidence, Roman Mejia. “It is such an honor to present the Limón Dance Company at this year’s Festival,” says Artistic Director Damian Woetzel. “The genius of Limón’s choreography is essential viewing for all who love dance and the arts, and with its profound humanity and naturalness it will be a magnificent match with our outdoor setting in Vail.”

a charismatic young dancer and college student from the University of Oklahoma. After returning several summers in a row in a variety of roles in marketing and operations, Cameron proved to be a valuable asset to the Festival team. Last year, he moved to the Vail Valley full time after accepting the title of Vail Dance Festival’s year-round Operations Manager. In addition to his leadership role that involves logistical planning and coordination of the Festival, Cameron is also in charge of recruiting for the internship program. “We look for ambitious individuals with strong work ethic and commitment to teamwork and each year we receive nearly 100 applicants for roughly fourteen spots.” he says. “There is a highly valuable opportunity to be seen and to make a difference in this program.” Fellowship and mentorship are strong values that are pillars of the Festival made evident by its commitment to young dancers and administrators in the early stages of their professional lives. Not only are careers made here, but so are friendships. “My internship experience showed me a career path in dance outside of performance by giving me the opportunity to work in a copious relationship side by side with key figures in the dance world,” Cameron continues. “These people have become such great friends and I am thrilled to support their work in this serendipitous opportunity to make a difference in the artform I love.” For information about the Festival internship program, please visit vaildance.org/about/work. Set to the music of Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth combining samba and other popular Afro-Brazilian rhythms, ODEON is what happens when you bring together street and club dances - including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue – and remix them in a world that blurs time, tempo and genre. ODEON is an original dance work for six dancers and four musicians, the second collaboration between sister and brother team Ephrat and Ehud Asherie (choreographer and musical director, respectively).

LIMÓN DANCE COMPANY

Built on the genius of José Limón, one of history’s greatest choreographers, the Limón Dance Company has been at the forefront of American modern dance since its founding in 1946. The company is revered for its dramatic expression of human themes, which will come uniquely to life in the natural setting of the Ford Amphitheater for this Vail debut performance. Repertory will include Limón’s dynamic Psalm, Doris Humphrey’s evocative Air for the G String, and Limón’s legendary solo Chaconne which will be danced by New York City Ballet soloist, and 2022 Festival Artist-In-Residence, Roman Mejia.

NOW: Premieres is a night of dynamic new works by a selection of today’s most creative dancemakers. Each year, the Festival commissions collaborations between artists across dance genres, pushing boundaries of the artform and further cementing Vail as an incubator for new choreography. The Next Generation, is currently showing on public television. The Arnhold’s visionary support for dance education has brought opportunities to many through the Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program at Hunter College and the Doctorate in Dance Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. The Arnhold Institute for Dance Education Research, Policy & Leadership at Teachers College generates valuable thought leadership for dance education in public policy, ensuring that dance becomes central to the conversation wherever education is discussed.

LUMINARY SOCIETY JILL & KEVIN PLANCHER Jill and Kevin Plancher first enjoyed the Vail Dance Festival in 1993 when Kevin was a fellow at the Steadman Clinic in Vail. They have attended and supported the Festival each and every year since. Jill and Kevin now live in Greenwich, and have three grown children: Brian, Jamie and Megan; daughter-in-law Annie Knickman Plancher and sonin-law Cezar Babin; and granddaughter Tess (Brian and Annie). Kevin has a private orthopedic practice in New York City and Greenwich. Jill is a family lawyer with Connecticut Legal Services. Jill also serves on the Vail Valley Foundation Board of Trustees and Vail Dance Festival Committee. They are delighted to once again support the International Evenings of Dance II. In addition, the Planchers are supporting a variety of artist’s hospitality needs.

TINA & DAVID WILSON AND THE CAROL F. STORR ENDOWMENT FOR CLASSICAL BALLET Tina & David Wilson have called the Vail Valley home for 30+ years. Along with their daughters, Colby and Nicole, the Wilsons have embraced the uniqueness of Vail complete with immersion in the arts, culture and outdoor activities that make Vail so special. In addition, they are active supporters and volunteers for a variety of charitable organizations in the Vail Valley. In honor of Tina’s mother, Carol Storr, the Wilson Family created The Carol F. Storr Endowment for Classical Ballet to ensure the inclusion of classical ballet in the Vail Dance Festival for generations to come. SEASON PRESENTER PRISCILLA BREWSTER SUSAN & JEFF CAMPBELL Susan and Jeff Campbell started coming to the Vail Valley from Dallas when their children were first learning to ski. They bought a house in Beaver Creek, providing stability for the family as they moved from Dallas to London, San Francisco and the West Village in New York City. They are avid dance lovers and longtime supporters of the Vail Dance Festival and the Vilar Performing Arts Center. Susan serves on the board of the Vail Valley Foundation and the New York City Ballet, and also chairs the Vail Dance Festival Committee. Jeff serves on the board of New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, in addition to his full-time job as Vice Chairman and CFO of American Express. The Campbells and their three grown children, who now live in Denver and San Francisco, are avid skiers, mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts, and the Vail Valley has been the center of family life for many years. OSCAR TANG & AGNES HSU-TANG Oscar has supported the Vail Valley Foundation (VVF) at a leadership level since its inception and has been a vital sponsor of the Vail Dance Festival for its 33-year history. He was one of the original visionaries and catalysts of VVF’s early focus on education in Eagle County. Many of the first educational programs continue to have a positive, transformational impact today. Oscar served on the VVF’s Board of Directors from 1987 to 2015 at which time he became a Board Life Trustee. In New York, Oscar is a Trustee Emeritus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is Co-chair of the New York Philharmonic. Trained as an art historian and archaeologist, Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang is an international policy advisor who has advised UNESCO and President Obama’s Cultural Property Advisory Committee, including two UNESCO World Heritage designations and an international treaty with China on the prevention of looting and commercialization of looted cultural objects. Formerly trained as a classical musician, Agnes made her debut at the Kennedy Center at age 18. Agnes served as the Managing Director on the Metropolitan Opera board from 2014 to 2021 and is Board Chair of the New-York Historical Society.

Howard is the Chairman Emeritus of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and now serves as Chairman of its South Florida Advisory Board. He also served as Chairman of the Anti-Defamation League and currently sits on the Board of the New York City Ballet. Locally, he serves on the Board of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. In New York, Judy serves on the Board of the New-York Historical Society; and is a Board Emeritus for The Center for Educational Innovation and Rockefeller University. Judy and Howard have been supporters of the VVF since its inception. Judy chaired the Vail Dance Festival committee for 20 years, cultivating it to the critically acclaimed festival it is today. MARGE & PHIL ODEEN Marge and Phil Odeen have had a home in Vail for more than 40 years. When not in Vail they live in McLean, Virginia, and Naples, Florida. They have supported the Vail Dance Festival for several years and both have been active in numerous cultural and charitable activities in the communities in which they live. PAUL REPETTO & JANET PYLE Paul Repetto & Janet Pyle are enthusiastic supporters of the Vail Dance Festival and the performing arts in general. Janet was a very involved Board Member of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder. RUBY DRESS CIRCLE THE JAMES & JANET AVERILL CHARITABLE FUND Jim and Janet Averill’s affection for the Vail Valley began with Jim’s many skiing excursions to the area and, in later years, Janet’s (and both of their) admiration for the creativity and beauty that the Vail Dance Festival brings to them—and to so many others. Jim is a former Professor of English Literature and Partner of Wellington Management Company. Janet is a retired university administrator, guidance counselor, and fundraiser. They live outside Philadelphia, where both continue as volunteers and board members for a number of arts, educational, and social service organizations. Janet is the outgoing Chair of BalletX. Their two children and five grandchildren are enthusiastic skiers and are expected to maintain the Vail connection well into the future. GINA BROWNING & JOE ILLICK Gina Browning and Joe Illick are both professional musicians and lovers of the performing arts. Gina started coming to Vail in 1971 and Joe started coming with her in 1979. Gina and Joe’s life in opera has taken them to live and work all over the world. The two of them are avid skiers and hikers, and are passionate part-time residents of the Vail Valley. They want to use their talents to support the Valley with an emphasis on the performing arts and education for children, which they feel are an integral and essential part of a healthy and vibrant community. Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie, a 2016 Bessie Award winner for Innovative Achievement in Dance, creates work for the dynamic group of multifaceted dancers in her company Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD). Rooted in various African American and Latine vernacular dances, including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue, EAD is dedicated to exploring the inherently complex and dynamic qualities of these forms - Asherie’s “movement phrases – compact bursts of choreography with rapid-fire changes in rhythm and gestural articulation – bubble up and dissipate, quickly paving the way for something new” (The New York Times). The Limón Dance Company (LDC) has been at the vanguard of dance since its inception in 1946. The first dance group to tour internationally under the auspices of the State Department, and first modern dance company to perform at Lincoln Center in New York, it has performed twice at The White House. The José Limón Dance Foundation, with Company and Institute, is the recipient of a 2008 National Medal of the Arts. LEGACY How the Wilson Family created the Vail Dance Festival’s first endowment in honor of family, tradition, and classical ballet. By Joel Solari

or many, the Vail Dance Festival is a family affair. Whether it be a familial bond between the dancers and musicians that return annually to their creative summer home here in the valley, or through the local families that regard the internationally renowned dance destination a source of hometown pride this perennial festival has a power to inspire and unite. For David and Tina Wilson, along with their daughters Colby and Nicole, their passion for the Vail Dance Festival extends across generations and has led them to make special plans to ensure that future audiences will continue benefiting from the classical ballet culture that has become signature to this revered summer dance tradition in the heart of Colorado. “I feel so lucky that this world-class festival comes to our little town of Vail,” says longtime resident Tina Wilson in a recent interview along with her daughter Colby who adds, “I can’t even remember my first time at the festival since I was so little; that’s how long I’ve been attending!” After a light chuckle, she continues, “But my earliest memory is seeing Serenade. Growing up dancing and watching classical ballet has always been my favorite. It’s timeless.” In a collective happy sigh of mutual recollection, both mother and daughter philanthropists share an affinity for not only the Balanchine masterpiece, but also a pride in seeing classical ballet here in the natural surroundings of the beautiful Vail Valley they call home.

Since its inception with the inaugural presentation of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in 1989, the Festival’s classical ballet traditions have become synonymous with Vail and its summertime artistic allure and charm. Some of the world’s most revered ballet companies, touring groups and individual dancers from around the globe have since graced the stage including artists from American Ballet Theatre, Ballet de Monterrey, Miami City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, The Royal Ballet, among many others. “It’s just achingly beautiful,” Tina explains. “There is simply nothing else like seeing this beautiful artform on the open-air stage at the Amphitheater. And with the many supplemental education and outreach opportunities making it so accessible, it’s not just for dance aficionados, it’s a festival for everyone.” With a penchant for the beauty and grace of the ballets they recall with such endearment, they also collectively share in an everlasting memory of their beloved matriarch Mrs. Carol Storr, Tina’s mother and Colby’s grandmother, who also had an affection and respect for classical ballet. “My mother deeply loved the ballet,” Tina recalls warmly. “She was a subscriber and supporter of New York City Ballet for nearly 50 years and she shared that love of the arts with her children and grandchildren as well. She absolutely loved coming to the Vail Dance Festival with her family.” In the summer of 2016, Carol Frances Storr passed away peacefully at the age of

76 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. A mother of three and grandmother of eight, she instilled in her descendants a passion for lifelong learning (she held three degrees herself), volunteerism and for giving back to the community. She supported several social and arts charities and served as a volunteer social worker for Gay Men’s Health Crisis in New York City for many years. She was lovingly devoted to her family and often traveled extensively to show support for her grandchildren at competitions, school events and performances. “When I was in high school, I was in the Vail Dance Festival’s Ambassador program, and I loved that my grandma got to see me in that role,” Colby remembers fondly. “Working behind-the-scenes, learning that I was needed here and was a part of the team, that was really special for someone at such a young age. It inspired me. My grandma recognized that and she was proud to see me involved.” The Carol F. Storr Foundation for Classical Ballet, the Vail Dance Festival’s first named endowment, was established in 2021 by the Wilson family to ensure that the presentation of classical ballet repertoire be enshrined in Festival programming for future generations to enjoy. “This form of legacy giving to our organization will be felt for years to come,” explains Sarah Johnson, Senior Vice President of Philanthropy. “An endowment such as this, is money set aside where the investment earnings grow over time and are distributed to

support a specific wish or program—in this case the presentation of classical ballet programming—keeping the original funds in perpetuity to support the donor’s intended purpose. We are so grateful for this beautiful and meaningful gift by the Wilsons in honor of Mrs. Storr.” For the entire Wilson-Storr family, establishing this endowment fund for the Vail Dance Festival is a natural extension and continuation of a shared family value in charitable community support. “I feel so grateful to carry on the legacy of giving that was so important to both my parents,” says Tina. “I believe that if you are fortunate to be in the position to help, it’s your responsibility to do so.” The family’s philanthropic spirit continues forward into the next generation with Colby too. “The Festival goes beyond getting a ticket, seeing a beautiful performance and then leaving,” she says. “It has a lasting impact for those new to dance and those that cherish it, like my grandmother. There are many benefits to the arts with valuable lessons in discipline, respect, passion, and honor for those that came before you. DANCING BALLET FORWARD

“Growing up on Guam,” she says, “adds to myself as an artist.” The matriarchal society is rooted in a celebration of life through music and dancing, and it is from that culture of community that Quan creates dances rooted in joy and resiliency.

Tony Award winner Justin Peck will choreograph to music by MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and Punch Brothers leader Chris Thile (who will perform in the new creation), officially marking the Festival’s 100th new work under Woetzel’s artistic direction. Both artists are hailed as important torch bearers in their respective fields, leading American ballet and bluegrass music into meaningful new territory. As resident choreographer at NYCB, Peck is known for creating invigorating dances that are at once architectural and sweeping yet intimate and familiar. His origin of choreographing on friends as a dancer is felt in the way he breaks down typical ballet hierarchies. Additional inspirations abound from his first love for tap dance to the George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins lineages that formed him at NYC Ballet. Peck’s recent acclaimed work as choreographer for director Steven Spielberg’s new West Side Story film marked his standing as one of ballet’s preeminent creators. The Peck and Thile collaboration is sure to push dance another step forward into the future. Atlanta Ballet resident choreographer Claudia Schreier creates thrillingly intricate work that embraces complex music, dancing, and themes. Her new ballet will be accompanied by the classical prodigyturned-decisively-21st-century composer Conrad Tao. The two artists are forged in classical work yet remain responsive to modern-day life. Regarding the past two tumultuous years of social reckoning, Schreier recalls, “There was a seismic shift in how I identify as a Black woman in America and the daughter of an immigrant.” Her recent creative output reflects this shift in its evolution from pure visceral musicality to incorporating narration. Schreier, a Princess Grace Awardee, speaks also of significant life experiences that influenced her as an artist. Notably, she interned at the Vail Dance Festival in 2007 and 2008. In between duties, she spent her time soaking up the intoxicating creative excellence that makes Vail so formative for so many artists. “I didn’t know at the time that I would be fortunate enough to have a career in choreography,” she says, “but Vail was my jumping off point. Being surrounded by that environment, it had an indelible impact.” Caili Quan, one of this summer’s Artists-In-Residence, also regards Vail as a source of artistic inspiration. She returns after several summers at the Festival performing as a dancer with leading contemporary ballet company BalletX. “It always starts with the music,” says Quan, who will collaborate with Caroline Shaw, the Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winning Festival Composer-In-Residence. Quan’s dynamic musical interpretations make it easy to be carried away by her dances.

MODERN MAVERICKS Pam Tanowitz’s choreographic career has skyrocketed since first creating work for the Festival in 2015. Her signature wit and rigor have crossed borders, from NYCB to The Royal Ballet and Australian Ballet. This summer, Tanowitz looks forward to collaborating with composer and vocalist Kate Davis. “I want to work with jazz and pop music, something totally different,” she says in her constant search for new creative challenges. Clearly a modern dance maker (Tanowitz takes her bows barefoot), she enjoys bending rules, particularly those inherent to ballet. She reconstructs the syntax of specific dance languages in conversation with the originators — whether that is the dancer in front of her or a known dance maker. The more distinct her dancers, the richer her work, as the movement languages each artist brings with them become material to be remolded. The dances she makes in Vail, varied in cast by the nature of the Festival itself, are rare feats of choreographic dialogue. Jodi Melnick is a choreographer-dancer whose dancing spills from her pores. “She is like water made human,” The New Yorker stated. Drawing from the lineage of postmodern dance master Trisha Brown, Melnick’s work feels endlessly spontaneous, radically present. Her precision reveals discipline while her lithe movements confirm a vital sense of freedom. Melnick’s commission will be accompanied by Portuguese composer Andreia Pinto-Correia. Her music is meditative yet energetic, calling to mind windstorms and landscapes racing past. Both artists carry a certain electricity; moments of dense sound and movement are held together by undercurrents of calm clarity. The collaboration between these two dynamic creators is sure to captivate.

FINDING FREEDOM IN AUTHENTICITY Bobbi Jene Smith, the fierce former star of Batsheva Dance Company, searches for virtuosic emotionality. Her work is grounded in Gaga, the movement language of Batsheva’s previous longtime Artistic Director Ohad Naharin. From this technical base, she researches the subconscious to choreograph interior lives into physical presence. �VAILDANCE

Smith returned to New York City from Israel in 2014 to focus on developing her own choreographic voice. The documentary, Bobbi Jene, chronicalled her difficult decision to leave the world-renowned contemporary company, capturing the unique story of an artist deeply searching for her essential authenticity. Smith continuously recommits herself to this quest, encouraging her collaborators and audiences to open themselves to their own deep truths. In 2020, Vail Dance Festival Digital Edition viewers were able to experience just that in a new work that Smith created during the height of the pandemic for Calvin Royal III, Melissa Toogood and herself, tapping into each dancer’s raw vulnerability. This summer, she will create a solo for the NYCB principal dancer Sara Mearns, who, like Smith, is known for her compelling emotionality and fearlessness. Ephrat Asherie emphasizes openness and authenticity as vital to her work. “Come as you are and bring your heart,” is how she describes the New York City club scene that raised her. As a choreographer, Asherie acts as dance alchemist. She remixes the Latine and African American street and social dance styles that taught her and so many others to “live in and with a spirit of generosity.” Asherie carries this ethos of club culture with her in all that she does. She creates work that reflects the layered intricacies of what is embodied nightly on those sacred dance floors, sharing the community’s values of individual and collective freedom. From hip hop and breaking to house and vogue, Asherie honors these styles’ complex histories by exploring the stories inherent in the dances themselves. “The club,” she says, “is a space where the collective consciousness celebrates each individual’s uniqueness.” In the early 1970s, NYC’s underground dance parties were some of the only places where historically excluded communities, specifically African American and Latine LGBTQIA+ youth, could be free to fully

express themselves. These inherent stories of human resilience and connection guide Asherie’s collaborations.

MOVING BEYOND THE MOUNTAINS AND LOOKING AHEAD Many of the new works that premiere at the Vail Dance Festival often live far beyond their summertime debuts. Over the past 15 years under Damian Woetzel’s artistic leadership, the legacy of new works created in Vail has expanded across the country and have earned the Vail Dance Festival a global reputation as a high-altitude incubator of important new works in American dance, as well as music. Tiler Peck’s Thousandth Orange, Alexi Ratmansky’s Fandango, Justin Peck’s Bloom, Christopher Wheeldon’s This Bitter Earth, as well as Wendy Whelan’s collaboration with Brian Brooks First Fall (later incorporated into Restless Creature), are just a handful of works that have gone on to critical and audience acclaim elsewhere since making their premieres in Vail. Gracing the major stages of the San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, New York City Center, among many others, the contributions of Vail Dance Festival commissions to the field is immensely vast and significant. So with spirited curiosity embedded in the impressive roster of new collaborations this summer, the 2022 Festival’s legacy of contemporary new dance works promises to display cutting edge artistic achievement and innovation. As artists push boundaries and broaden their artistic horizons, audiences are encouraged to lean in and witness the Festival’s expansive creative spirit in magnificent action. It is from here that dance leaps forward into new territory.
