Welcome to the fourth annual Vail Global Energy Forum What a pleasure it is to welcome you to the fourth annual Vail Global Energy Forum!

This weekend we will examine together some enormous opportunities and challenges: the rise of North America as a global energy powerhouse; technical and regulatory innovations for hydraulic fracturing; financing of clean energy; and the future of transportation. Overall, we will explore sustainable, secure and affordable energy services needed for a robust global economy.

Stanford University was founded almost 125 years ago “to promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization.” That vision has not wavered, as Stanford continues to take on the world’s biggest tasks.

Among the most important of these tasks is sustainable energy. Stanford faculty, students and research staff are investigating a broad range of energy issues, from new renewable energy technologies to incentives for energy-efficient behavior. Simultaneously, we are training a new generation of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and analysts to provide future solutions.

Welcome It is an honor to host the fourth annual Vail Global Energy Forum (VGEF) at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek.

Less than 10 years ago, colleagues at Stanford University set ourselves a goal and designed a plan to bring together some of the best and brightest minds to engage in a broad-ranging, research and education program on energy.

Stanford’s Precourt Institute for Energy (PIE) engages in multi-disciplinary research about supplying energy that is environmentally responsible, economical, secure and deliverable on a large scale. It now encompasses approximately 20 Departments, all seven Schools and more than two hundred faculty members. PIE focuses on, among other activities, Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Energy Supply (wind, solar, biofuels, and smart grids), basic research at the Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) financed by five large global industrial companies, Energy Policy Analysis, and non-government basic energy research which is conducted utilizing the Stanford Linear Accelerator.

The VGEF is designed to present annually the highlights of PIE’s latest findings and other pressing energy issues.

The United States is at a watershed moment in its energy history. We are within reach of becoming independent by 2020 of net waterbourne energy imports, while also simultaneously reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases significantly.

We face many new opportunities and challenges. Innovations in drilling technologies such as hydraulic fracturing have increased U.S. oil production by over 80% to 9 million barrels per day during the past 5 years (now within reach of Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil producer). U.S. domestic natural gas reserves have grown from 10 years’ supply to greater than 100 years’ supply at significantly lower prices. Shared goals with our trading partners and good neighbors Canada and Mexico have set the stage for an historic North American energy strategy that could ensure our common energy security and energy independence for decades to come.

Major improvements in energy efficiency, clean energy technologies, and substantial replacement of coal with cleaner natural gas have already markedly driven down the levels of emissions of so-called “greenhouse gases” to below those of the 1980’s.

Responsible governmental regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to mandate new energy efficiencies in appliances, buildings, vehicles, the smart grid and power sources have made a healthy contribution toward creating an enhanced and far more enlightened energy future.

We will share these latest discoveries and innovations with you during our full two and a half day program which we believe you will find to be highly stimulating and thought-provoking.

Our goal is to create a “Mini-Davos on Energy� and thanks to your generous support and participation, we feel we are well on our way. The crisp mountain air appears to sharpen the mind and lead to constructive dialogue on the critical issues of our day. We aim to be fair and non-partisan; to listen and learn from one another; to be problem-solvers and pragmatists who exhibit the finest traits of the American character.

We are now at a pivotal crossroad that will define our lives for the better part of the 21st century as we wrestle with how to create sufficient energy to support and sustain the addition of billions of more people to the planet while protecting our precious natural environment. With Canada and Mexico, we have the opportunity for North America to become truly energy independent and energy secure within this decade. Our audience realizes the actions we take today will profoundly affect the conditions in which we and our children will live tomorrow and in the decades to come.

VGEF 2015 will confront a number of pressing issues, including the explosive growth of U.S. oil and natural gas production through the process of hydraulic fracturing; the challenges and geopolitical implications of the rise of North America as a global energy powerhouse; the future of transportation and the innovative technologies that are radically redefining the car-and-driver relationship; clean energy technologies that through their efficiencies and smart grid applications are transforming the power industry and reshaping public utilities, financial markets, and governmental regulatory policies regarding the future of clean power generation; and other critical subjects.

We look forward to a vigorous debate and a lively exchange of ideas and to working together to help create more sustainable, independent, secure and environmentally responsible energy policies for the foreseeable future; not just for ourselves and the Greater Vail Valley, but for Colorado, the United States, North America and the world at large.

Dan E. Arvizu has served as the Director and Chief Executive of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, and President of Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC since January 2005. He is also an Executive Vice President with MRIGlobal, headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. He was appointed by two successive U.S. presidents to serve six-year terms on the National Science Board, which governs the National Science Foundation and advises the President and Congress on science policy. He is presently serving as Chairman. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Public Administration.

At the center, a joint initiative of Stanford’s law and business schools, Mr. Ball heads a project exploring how China and the U.S. might deploy cleaner energy more efficiently if each one played to its economic strengths. The project focuses on the solar industry, the subject of a seminar that Mr. Ball, a lecturer at the law school, co-teaches.

Prior to joining NREL, Dr. Arvizu was a chief technology officer with CH2M HILL Companies, Ltd. Before joining CH2M he was an executive with Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, leading organizations in energy technologies, material science, and technology commercialization. He started his career and spent four years at the AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories.

Mr. Ball writes regularly for a variety of publications. His stories and essays have appeared in Fortune, The New Republic, Foreign Affairs, The Wall Street Journal and Slate, among other places. He came to Stanford University in 2011 from The Wall Street Journal, where he was the Environment Editor and spent more than a decade writing about energy and the environment from the paper’s Detroit and Dallas bureaus.

Dr. Arvizu serves on a number of boards, panels and advisory committees including the American Council on Renewable Energy Advisory Board, the Singapore International Advisory Panel on Energy, the Colorado Renewable Energy Authority Board of Directors, and the Stanford Precourt Institute for Energy Advisory Council.

Mr. Ball contributes commentary about energy issues on WSJ.com as a member of “The Experts,” a Wall Street Journal panel. He remains an organizer and host of ECO:nomics, The Journal’s annual conference on energy and the environment, which he helped create. He speaks frequently about writing and about energy and environmental issues, including on college campuses as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow. He has appeared such networks as PBS, NPR, CNN and the BBC.

Dr. Arvizu has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico State University, and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.

Jeffrey Ball, a writer on energy and the environment, is scholar-in-residence at Stanford University’s Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance.

Mr. Ball graduated from Yale University, where he was Editorin-Chief of the Yale Daily News. He and his wife are the resident fellows of Roble Hall, a Stanford University undergraduate house, where they live with their two daughters and their dog.

Sally M. Benson

Sally M. Benson is the Director of Stanford’s Precourt Institute for Energy and the Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP), a pioneering universityindustry partnership to develop innovative, low-carbon energy supplies to meet global energy needs. She is also a professor in the Energy Resources Engineering in the School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences. Prior to coming to Stanford University, Professor Benson was at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory.

There she held a variety of key positions, including Earth Sciences Division Director, Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Sciences and Deputy Director for Operations.

While Director of the Earth Sciences Division, she had extensive engagement on a broad range of topics, from scientific studies to support the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Disposal Program to managing legacy wastes at the Department of Energy’s facilities.

A Groundwater Hydrologist and Reservoir Engineer, Professor Benson is widely regarded as a leading authority on carbon capture and storage and emerging energy technologies. Professor Benson’s research interests include technologies and energy systems for a low-carbon future and energy systems analysis.

At Stanford University, she leads a research laboratory that studies fundamental aspects of geologic carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in saline aquifers.

In 2005, Professor Benson served as a coordinating lead author of a special report on CO2 capture and storage published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In 2007, she was one of thousands of IPCC scientists to receive the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.” In 2012, she was the coordinating lead author for the chapter in the Global Energy Assessment on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage. Benson is the recipient of the 2012 Greenman Award from the IEA Greenhouse Gas Program; the ARCS 2009 American Pacesetter Award; and the 2009 Michel T. Halbouty Distinguished Lecture Award from the Geological Society of America.

Mr. Boston has served for the past six years as CEO of PJM Interconnection, the largest power grid in North America and the largest electricity market in the world. Mr. Boston is president of the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies and past president of GO 15, the association of the world’s largest power grid operators. He also served as a U.S. Vice President of the International Council of Large Electric Systems.

Mr. Boston is past chair of the North American Transmission Forum, dedicated to excellence in performance and sharing industry best practices. He also was one of the eight industry experts selected to direct the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) investigation of the August 2003 Northeast/ Midwest blackout.

In 2014 Mr. Boston was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest professional honors accorded an engineer. Mr. Boston was honored with the 2011 “Leadership in Power” award from the IEEE Power and Energy Society. He led PJM to win Platts Global Energy Awards in Industry Leadership 2010 and Excellence in Electricity in 2012.

Prior to joining PJM, Mr. Boston was the Executive Vice President of the Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation’s largest public power provider. In his 35 years at TVA, Mr. Boston directed divisions in transmission and power operations, pricing, contracts and electric system reliability.

He served three years as chairman of the Southeastern Electric Reliability Council Board and serves on the boards of nonprofits such as the Electric Power Research Institute and Grid Protection Alliance. He previously served on the NERC Stakeholders Board and was elected to the NERC Members Representative Committee.

Mr. Boston holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Tennessee Technological University and a Master of Science in Engineering Administration from the University of Tennessee.

Jim Brown is President, Western Hemisphere, for Halliburton. Mr. Brown is also a member of Halliburton’s Executive Committee.

Previously, Mr. Brown was Senior Vice President, Western Hemisphere. Prior to that, he was Vice President, U.S. Region, for Halliburton’s Energy Services Group.

Mr. Brown joined Halliburton in February 1996 as Business Development Manager for the U.S. Western Area. He was promoted to North American Business Development Manager in 2000 and to Division Vice President for the U.S. Northern Area in 2001. Before coming to Halliburton, Mr. Brown had successful careers at the Western Company of North America and BJ Services.

Mr. Brown is a 1977 graduate of the University of South Dakota, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Ahmad Chatila became President and Chief Executive Officer of SunEdison and a member of the Board of Directors in March 2009. He is also the Chairman of TerraForm Power, a SunEdison company (NASDAQ: TERP).

Prior to SunEdison Mr. Chatila served as Executive Vice President of the Memory and Imaging Division, and head of global manufacturing for Cypress Semiconductor. In these roles, he was responsible for strategy, financial performance and revenue growth for the Memory and Imaging Division, as well as global manufacturing for all divisions of Cypress. Previously Mr. Chatila served as Managing Director of Cypress’ Low Power Memory Business Unit. Prior to these roles at Cypress, Ahmad served in sales at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).

Mr. Chatila holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University, a Master of Electrical Engineering degree from Cornell University, and has completed the Stanford Executive Program at Stanford University.

Carl Colby is an awardwinning documentary filmmaker and President of Carl Colby Films, LLC. His production credits include films about Franz Kline, Willem De Kooning, Bob Marley, Frank Gehry, George Hurrell and Franco Zeffirelli (an Emmy Award-winner), among many other productions.

Mr. Colby recently produced and directed The Man Nobody Knew: In Search of My Father CIA Spymaster William Colby, a feature documentary film on his late father, William Colby, former Director of the CIA, and the evolution of the CIA from OSS in WWII to today. The film received excellent reviews from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and many other publications and played in theatrical release for more than eight months in more than sixty cities across the U.S. The film is available on Netflix and Amazon.

Mr. Colby has organized many conferences, including Le Marquis de Lafayette and the Spirit of Revolution for the French Government and National Endowment for the Humanities; Venice: La Serenissima and Venice: Behind the Mask for the Government of Italy and the National Gallery of Art on what lessons modern states can learn from the rise and fall of the 1,000 year old Venetian Republic; Shigeru Ban and the Architecture of Disaster Relief for the Government of Japan and National Building Museum on creating sustainable shelters for victims of natural disasters; Les Seminars: Revolutionary Ideas about comparing education, health and medicine in the American Revolution and today for the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the American Revolution Center.

Steve Corneli is NRG Energy’s Senior Vice President for Policy and Strategy. He oversees NRG’s strategic sustainability and policy initiatives, with a primary focus on clean technologies and sustainable enterprises. Mr. Corenli has previously served as NRG’s Senior Vice President of Market and Climate Policy, where he was responsible for NRG’s climate change and related policy efforts, as NRG’s Vice President of Regulatory and Government Affairs, and as Director of Regulatory Policy. He is a member of the board of the Climate Action Reserve, a premier US certifier of greenhouse gas offset methodologies.

Prior to joining NRG, Mr. Corneli served in the Minnesota Attorney General’s office as an energy policy analyst and then as the manager of the office’s utility consumer advocate division.

He also has worked at the law firm of Leonard, Street and Deinard on behalf of utility and independent power producer clients, and was an adjunct faculty member of the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. Earlier in his career, he operated a 600-acre family farm in Wisconsin for more than a decade.

Mr. Corneli has a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from the Humphrey Institute with a concentration in energy, environment and technology policy, and has taken coursework in the University of Minnesota’s doctoral program in Applied Economic.

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. John’s College.

Mr. Colby enjoys serving as Executive Director of the Vail Global Energy Forum and working in tandem with Founder Jay Precourt and the excellent VGEF team.

Michael Dimock

Dr. David Danielson Assistant Secretary, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (U.S. Department of Energy) Dr. David Danielson leads the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). As Assistant Secretary, he oversees a broad energy portfolio that is intended to hasten the transition to a clean energy economy.

Dr. Danielson oversees six major technology and strategic areas, including Energy Efficiency, Renewable Power, Sustainable Transportation, Strategic Programs, Financial Management, and Business Operations offices. He represents EERE before national, state, and local audiences to reinforce EERE’s mission and to leverage partnerships to transform the nation’s economic engine to one powered by clean energy.

Previously, he was the first Program Director hired by DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). At ARPA-E, he developed and led R&D programs with a budget of more than $100 million that focused on high-risk, high-reward, disruptive clean energy technologies.

Prior to joining ARPA-E, he was a clean energy venture capitalist at General Catalyst Partners, a Boston-based venture capital fund. He co-founded the firm’s clean energy investment practice and helped build and grow startups in various clean energy technology areas including solar power, wind power, advanced biofuels, bio-gas, carbon capture and storage, and advanced lighting.

He was a co-founder of the New England Clean Energy Council.

He has authored more than 20 scientific articles in the field of advanced materials. While at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he was the founder and President of the MIT Energy Club and a founding Director of the MIT Energy Conference. For his work in building a strong multidisciplinary energy community at MIT, he was awarded the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, MIT’s highest student award.

President, Pew Research Center Michael Dimock is President of the Pew Research Center. A survey researcher and political scientist by training, he oversees the center’s overall operations and research agenda, including research on politics, religion, demographics, media, technology and international issues.

Mr. Dimock has worked at Pew Research Center for more than a decade. He was first hired by the center’s founding director, Andrew Kohut, in 2000, became Associate Director for Research in 2004 and then succeeded Kohut as director of the center’s political polling unit in 2012. He has been the co-author of several of the center’s landmark research reports, including its studies of long-term trends in American political and social values and its polling reports from the last several presidential cycles. In 2014, as vice president of research, he oversaw the execution and analysis of the largest U.S. political survey that the Pew Research Center has conducted, an in-depth examination of the nature and scope of political polarization within the American public.

He is a frequent commentator on public opinion polling for major media organizations. A regular election night analyst on NPR, he has appeared as a survey analyst on PBS NewsHour, Fox News, NBC, CBS, CNN, C-SPAN and MSNBC, among other broadcast outlets. Mr. Dimock has published scholarly articles on public opinion, voting behavior and survey methodology, and presented numerous times at American Association for Public Opinion Research conferences.

He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California-San Diego and his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Houston. Before joining the Pew Research Center, he was a Political Science professor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C.

Dr. Danielson holds a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ambassador Gary Doer 23rd Canadian Ambassador to the United States of America In October 2009, Gary Doer assumed his responsibilities as Canada’s 23rd representative to the United States of America.

Prior to taking up his current position in Washington, Ambassador Doer served as Premier of Manitoba for ten years.

During that time, he worked extensively with U.S. Governors to enhance Canada-U.S. cooperation on trade, agriculture, water protection, climate change and renewable energy.

Ambassador Doer won three consecutive elections as Premier of Manitoba with successive increased majorities. In 2005, he was named by Business Week magazine as one of the top 20 international leaders on climate change. His government introduced balanced budgets during each of his ten years in office while reducing many taxes, including a plan to eliminate small business tax. As Premier, he led strategic investments in health care, education, and training and infrastructure.

Ambassador Doer hails from Winnipeg. He is married with two daughters.

Ira Ehrenpreis Co-Founder and Managing Partner, DBL Partners Ira Ehrenpreis is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of DBL Partners, a leading impact investing venture capital firm. Mr. Ehrenpreis has also led Technology Partners venture firm’s energy innovation investment practice for many years, investing in Energy Technology, Water Technology, and Advanced Materials opportunities.

Mr. Ehrenpreis is a recognized leader in both the venture capital industry and the energy innovation sector. In 2007, he was named one of the “Top 50 Most Influential Men Under 45” and in 2014 was inducted into the International Green Industry Hall of Fame. For many years, he has led Technology Partners’ venture practice investing in energy innovation opportunities.

In the venture community, Mr. Ehrenpreis has served on the Board and Executive Committee of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), was Chairman of the 2010 NVCA Annual Meeting, and serves as the President of the Western Association of Venture Capitalists (WAVC). Ira also serves as the Co-Chairman of the VCNetwork, the largest and most active California venture capital organization.

In the energy innovation sector, Mr. Ehrenpreis is the founder and Chairman of one of the most prominent annual industry events, the World Energy Innovation Forum (WEIF), which convenes the “who’s-who” in the industry to discuss the important energy issues and opportunities of our time.

Mr. Ehrenpreis is an active leader at Stanford University, where he has served on the Board of Visitors of Stanford Law School and is currently an advisory board member of the Stanford Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP).

Jonathan Elkind

Senator Cory Gardner

Principle Deputy Secretary, Office of International Affairs (U.S. Department of Energy) Jonathan Elkind serves as Principle Deputy Secretary for the Office of International Affairs (IA) and served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Policy and International Affairs from 2009 to 2013.

Prior to joining the Energy Department, Mr. Elkind worked as a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, focusing on energy security and foreign policy issues. He also founded and headed EastLink Consulting, LLC, an independent consultancy focusing on energy, environment, and investment. From 1998 to 2001, Mr. Elkind served on the staff of the U.S. National Security Council as Director for Russian, Ukrainian, and Eurasian Affairs.

Between 1989 and 1998, he served in a variety of other government positions on the National Security Affairs staff of the Vice President of the United States, at the U.S. Department of Energy, and at the Council on Environmental Quality. Mr. Elkind received a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) degree from the University of Maryland. He also has a Master’s degree in Soviet History from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.

U.S. Senator (R-CO); Member, Senate Energy and Commerce Committee Senator Cory Gardner is a fifth-generation Coloradan who was born and raised in Yuma, a small town on the Eastern Plains of Colorado where his family has owned a farm implement dealership for nearly a century. He lives in the same house his great-grandparents lived in. After working at his family implement business and the National Corn Growers Association, Senator Gardner took a position as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Wayne Allard (RCO) and quickly advanced to his Legislative Director. He began serving in the Colorado House of Representatives in 2005 where he spent time as the Minority Whip and became known for his expertise in natural resource and agriculture policy.

Senator Gardner was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Cory championed a true all-of-the-above energy strategy that promoted traditional resources as well as renewable energy.

In addition, Senator Gardner is a national leader on energy efficiency initiatives and founded a bipartisan energy efficiency caucus in the House. In the Senate, Cory continues to pursue common sense energy policy as a member of the Senate Energy & Natural Resource Committee. In addition, Senator Gardner serves on the Foreign Relations Committee, the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee.

Senator Gardner is focused on expanding the economy, creating jobs, and making life better for all Coloradans. He graduated summa cum laude from Colorado State University and received his law degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. He lives in Yuma with his wife Jaime and their three children: Alyson, Thatcher, and Caitlyn.

Rob Gardner

In Rob Gardner’s over 35 years in the industry, he has managed both Gas and Gas Liquid businesses in the United States. He has worked in the Asia Pacific and been involved in Liquid Natural Gas business development, sales and project development. He has managed business development activities in a number of countries. He lived in Qatar and Indonesia working with National Oil Company representatives to promote LNG projects. In his early career, he worked in engineering activities involved in supplying gas to US markets and worked in sales of gas to those markets.

Today, Mr. Gardner speaks extensively publicly on the future of energy demand and supply across the world. He manages the group responsible for preparing ExxonMobil’s Energy Outlook.

Mr. Gardner has worked in ExxonMobil’s Corporate Strategic Planning Department for over the last five years leading the development of the company’s key outlooks.

Mr. Gardner graduated from Louisiana State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering and began his working career with Mobil Oil in Louisiana.

Beginning in 1990, he held management positions in Indonesia, Qatar, Japan and Singapore. At the end of 2001, Mr. Gardner returned to the United States and began a series of management assignments in ExxonMobil’s Houston organization before moving to its Dallas area Headquarters.

Russ Girling assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TransCanada Corporation on July 1, 2010. Prior to this, he was Chief Operating Officer, responsible for overseeing the company’s pipeline and energy businesses, corporate development activities and strategies, operations and major projects, and corporate services.

Prior to serving as COO, Mr. Girling was President, Pipelines of TransCanada Corporation, where he had overall responsibility for regulated businesses, including gas and oil pipelines in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Mr. Girling was also previously Executive Vice-President, Corporate Development and Chief Financial Officer of TransCanada. Through 2001, he was President of TransCanada Gas Services and was responsible for its ultimate disposition.

In 1995 Mr. Girling was appointed Executive Vice-President, Power where he had overall responsibility for the creation and management of the TransCanada subsidiary, TransCanada Power, including the creation of TransCanada Power, L.P. Prior to joining TransCanada in 1994, Mr. Girling held several marketing and management positions at Suncor Inc., Northridge Petroleum Marketing and Dome Petroleum.

Mr. Girling is currently a director of Agrium Inc. He is the former Chairman of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) and the Natural Gas Council (NGC), and also a former director of the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA). He is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TC PipeLines GP, Inc. (general partner of TC PipeLines, LP).

Additionally, Mr. Girling is the former Chairman of TransCanada Power, L.P. and a former director of Bruce Power Inc. He is also a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the U.S. National Petroleum Council and U.S. Business Roundtable.

Mr. Girling was a 1998/1999 recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Award for leadership excellence for Canadians under the age of 40. In 2008 he was the recipient of the Haskayne School of Business Management Alumni Excellence (MAX) Award.

Mr. Girling holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Calgary.

Dr. Stefan Heck

Consulting Professor, Precourt Institute for Energy Dr. Heck is a Consulting Professor at the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University, teaching courses and conducting research on innovation, energy, and resource economics. He directs the Energy Transformation Collaborative (ETC) a new program applying the talent of the Stanford community and Silicon Valley to develop and deploy novel solutions to the world’s most vexing energy problems. Through specially designed yearlong curricula, students, faculty, industry practitioners, and policy-makers work together to design and launch innovative projects that can be scaled and replicated.

Dr. Heck is also a research fellow at the Steyer Taylor Center at the Stanford business and law school, and an angel investor in disruptive technology companies.

42nd Governor of Colorado A geologist-turned brewpub pioneer who had never run for political office (not even student council) before being elected Mayor of Denver in 2003, John Hickenlooper was elected Governor of Colorado in November 2010. He took office two months later.

Dr. Heck is on the Innovation Advisory Board of United Technologies, the board of the Biomimicry Institute, the advisory boards of New World Capital, Chrysalix Energy Venture Capital, and the School of Earth Sciences at Stanford.

Dr. Heck received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from UCSD and a B.S. with honors in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University.

His research focused on neural networks.

Richard L. Kauffman Chairman of Energy and Finance, New York (Office of Governor Cuomo) Richard Kauffman joined the administration of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo as New York State’s first “energy czar” in February of 2013. In this capacity, Mr. Kauffman is responsible for developing and advancing the Governor’s ambitious plan to create a cleaner, more resilient and affordable energy system in New York.

Mr. Kauffman oversees and manages the State’s entire energy portfolio, including the New York State Department of Public Service, the New York Power Authority, the Long Island Power Authority, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), of which he was confirmed as Chairman of the Board in June of 2013.

Under Mr. Kauffman’s leadership, the State has launched the Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), a fundamental restructuring of its energy industry regulations, and committed $5 billion over the next ten years to support local renewable energy and efficiency markets through the Clean Energy Fund. In addition, he has overseen the establishment of the NY Green Bank and the historic $1 billion NY-Sun solar initiative.

Prior to joining the administration, Mr. Kauffman worked in energy and finance at some of the nation’s highest levels, most recently serving as Senior Advisor to Secretary Steven Chu at the U.S. Department of Energy. In his private sector career, he was Chief Executive Officer of Good Energies, Inc, a leading investor in clean energy technologies, a partner of Goldman Sachs where he chaired the Global Financing Group, and vice chairman of Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Securities Business and co-head of its Banking Department.

Mr. Kauffman has served as Chairman of the Board of Levi Strauss & Co., as well as on the boards of several organizations, including the Brookings Institution and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Fred Krupp

Jay Precourt Professor, Stanford University Environmental Defense Fund President Fred Krupp, who has guided EDF for three decades, is a widely recognized leader of the international environmental community. He is an influential voice on climate change, energy, and sustainability issues, and an eloquent champion for harnessing the power of the marketplace to protect our environment. Mr. Krupp is co-author with Miriam Horn of the New York Times bestseller Earth: The Sequel – The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming.

Under Mr. Krupp’s leadership, EDF has become one of the world’s largest and most influential environmental organizations. Since 1984, when he joined as executive director, EDF’s annual operating budget has grown from $3 million to $130 million, full-time staff has increased from 50 to 450, membership has expanded from 40,000 to more than one million, and new offices have opened in Arkansas, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Texas, Beijing, London and La Paz, Mexico. Among the group’s many achievements, EDF is the architect of the federal market-based acid rain policy that has reduced average U.S. air concentrations of sulfur dioxide by 76% since 1990. In 2002, The Economist called it “the greatest green success story of the past decade.”

In 2011, serving on U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s advisory panel for shale gas production, Mr. Krupp was a powerful voice for strong regulation and enforcement to protect local communities from air and water pollution caused by natural gas development. He has focused national attention on the problem of methane emissions – methane is a potent greenhouse gas – from the oil-and-gas system. Mr. Krupp has also led EDF’s innovative corporate partnerships with FedEx, KKR, McDonald’s, Walmart and others.

Mr. Krupp was educated at Yale and the University of Michigan Law School, and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Haverford College. An avid rower, he won a gold medal in the 2006 World Rowing Masters Regatta sponsored by FISA, the international rowing federation. He has been profiled in The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, and Bloomberg Businessweek, appears frequently in the national media, and was named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News and World Report. He lives with his family in Connecticut.

In October 2009, Dr. Majumdar was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate to become the Founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E), where he served until June 2012. His research career includes the science and engineering of nanoscale materials and devices as well as large engineered systems.

Dr. Majumdar is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1985 and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989. He currently serves on the US Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board and as a Science Envoy for the US Department of State. He is a member on the Council of the National Academy of Engineering, the Electric Power Research Institute, as well as the Science Board of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is a member of the International Advisory Panel for Energy of the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry and the US delegation for the US-India Track II dialogue on climate change and energy.

Randall E. Mehrberg Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Vail Resorts Randy Mehrberg joined Vail Resorts as Executive Vice President and General Counsel in December 2013. Prior to joining Vail Resorts, Mr. Mehrberg was with Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (PSEG) where he was the Executive Vice President of Strategy and Development and President of PSEG Energy Holdings, which developed renewable energy solutions.

Mr. Mehrberg joined PSEG in 2008. Prior to PSEG, he served from 2000 to 2008 in various capacities at Exelon Corporation, including General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer and Chief Administrative Officer. Prior to joining Exelon, he was a partner at Jenner & Block LLP, where he practiced from 1980 to 1993 and again from 1997 to 2000. From 1993 to 1997, Mr. Mehrberg served as Lakefront Director and General Counsel for the City of Chicago’s Park District.

Sunil Paul Co-Founder and CEO, Sidecar Mr. Paul is a veteran entrepreneur, champion of climate reform and disrupter of the status quo. Under his leadership Sidecar has expanded from the first instant rideshare company in San Francisco to 10 cities nationwide.

His passion to reinvent transportation dates back over a decade.

In 2011, Mr. Paul successfully lobbied the California legislature to pass a law for peer-to-peer car sharing, a law that has since been adopted by Oregon and Washington. In 2002, Mr. Paul was issued a patent, now held by Sidecar, for using smartphones to coordinate transportation.

As an investor and partner at Spring Ventures, Mr. Paul coined the term “cleanweb” which marries information technology and the social web with green initiatives. Sidecar is the realization of his cleanweb vision. Mr. Paul also co-founded and led Brightmail, the leading anti-spam company later sold to Symantec and FreeLoader, the first web based push technology service.

Prior to joining Petrie Partners as Chairman in 2012, Thomas A. Petrie was Vice Chairman of Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Previously, he was a co-founder of Petrie Parkman & Co., a Denver and Houston based energy investment banking firm that merged with Merrill Lynch in December 2006. Mr. Petrie was a former Managing Director and Senior Oil Analyst of The First Boston Corporation. During his career, Mr. Petrie has been an active advisor on more than $200 billion of energy related mergers and acquisitions, including a number of the larger in the industry.

Among its other assignments, Petrie Parkman advised the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on its natural gas initiative, the State of Alaska on gas pipeline options, and the U.S. Department of Energy on the sale of the Elk Hills oilfield.

An active member of several industry associations, Mr. Petrie is a past President and member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Petroleum Investment Analysts. He has also served on the Securities and Exchange Commission Advisory Board on Oil and Gas Accounting and has delivered a number of technical papers to the Society of Petroleum Engineers on the subjects of petroleum valuation, merger and acquisition trends, and energy policy. He has been interviewed on numerous occasions by Barron’s and has also appeared on “The News Hour,” CNBC, Bloomberg, Fox News, and “Consuelo Mack WealthTrack” on PBS. He has also recently authored the book, FOLLOWING OIL: Four Decades of Cycle-Testing Experiences and What They Foretell about U.S. Energy Independence.

Mr. Petrie served for six years as a Trustee of the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point as well as ten years on the Board of Directors of the Gettysburg Foundation. Currently, he is a Trustee of the Denver Art Museum and the Colorado Conservation Trust, and serves on the Board of Directors of the C.M. Russell Museum, the Gilcrease Museum National Board, and the Colorado School of Mines Foundation Board of Governors.

Mr. Petrie has a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received his Masters of Science in Business Administration from Boston University. In December 2005, Mr. Petrie received an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering degree from the Colorado School of Mines.

Most recently, Mr. Precourt was the chairman and CEO of Hermes Consolidated of Denver, Colorado, a private company active in crude oil refining, pipelining and marketing of petroleum products. Mr. Precourt sold the company in 2011. He has spent his career in the energy industry, earlier holding president and/or CEO positions at Hamilton Oil Company, Tejas Gas Corporation, ScissorTail Energy, and Hermes Consolidated, the last three of which became substantial companies under his leadership, having begun as fledging startups in the energy sector.

Mr. Precourt‘s current endeavor has been the co-founding of the Vail Global Energy Forum which debuted in March 2012. Dan Reicher is Executive Director of the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University, a joint center of the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, where he also holds faculty positions. Reicher has more than 25 years of experience in energy and environmental policy, finance, and technology. He has served three Presidents including in the Clinton administration as Assistant Secretary of Energy for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Department of Energy Chief of Staff, as a member of President Obama’s Transition Team and Co-chair of the Energy and Environment Team for Obama, and as a staff member of President Carter’s Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island. Mr. Reicher came to Stanford in 2011 from Google, where he served since 2007 as Director of Climate Change and Energy Initiatives.

Mr. Reicher currently is Senior Advisor to the Atlantic Wind Connection, a project backed by Google and other investors to build an underwater transmission line for offshore wind power and grid reliability along the U.S. east coast. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences Board on Energy and Environmental Systems, and co-chairman of the Board of the American Council on Renewable Energy. He also serves on the boards of the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy and American Rivers, the Advanced Energy Economy Advisory Committee, the Vermont Law School Environmental Advisory Committee, and the Dartmouth College Alumni Council.

In 2012, Mr. Reicher received an honorary doctorate from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and was also named one of the five most influential figures in U.S. clean energy by Oilprice.Com. Before his position at Google, Mr. Reicher was President and Co-founder of New Energy Capital Corp., a private equity firm funded by the California State Teachers Retirement System and Vantage Point Venture Partners to invest in clean energy projects.

He also was Executive Vice President of Northern Power Systems, one of the nation’s oldest renewable energy companies and a recipient of significant venture capital investment. Mr. Reicher was also an adjunct professor at the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Vermont Law School.

Condoleezza Rice is currently a professor of Political Economy in the Graduate School of Business; the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution; and a professor of Political Science at Stanford University. She is also a founding partner of RiceHadleyGates.

From January 2005-2009, Dr. Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State of the United States, the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post. Dr. Rice also served as President George W. Bush’s Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor) from January 2001-2005, the first woman to hold the position.

Dr. Rice served as Stanford University’s Provost from 19931999, during which she was the institution’s chief budget and academic officer. As Provost, she was responsible for a $1.5 billion annual budget and the academic program involving 1,400 faculty members and 14,000 students. In 1997, she also served on the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender -- Integrated Training in the Military.

From 1989 through March 1991, Dr. Rice served on President George H.W. Bush’s National Security Council staff. She served as Director; Senior Director of Soviet and East European Affairs; and, Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, Rice also served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Dr. Rice currently serves on the board of Dropbox, an onlinestorage technology company, C3, an energy software company, and Makena Capital, a private endowment firm. In addition, she is a member of the boards of the Commonwealth Club, the Aspen Institute, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

Bill Ritter, Jr. is the founder and director of the Center for the New Energy Economy (CNEE) at Colorado State University that launched on February 1, 2011. The Center employs an assistant director, three senior policy advisors, an executive assistant and a team of student researchers.

The Center works directly with governors, legislators, regulators, planners, policymakers, and other decision makers. It provides technical assistance to help officials create the policies and practices that will facilitate America’s transition to a cleanenergy economy.

Mr. Ritter was elected as Colorado’s 41st governor in 2006, and built consensus to tackle some of the state’s biggest challenges.

During his four-year term, Mr. Ritter established Colorado as a national and international leader in clean energy, by building a new energy economy. He signed 57 new energy bills into law, including a 30% Renewable Portfolio Standard and a Clean Air Clean Jobs Act that replaced nearly a gigawatt of coal-fired generation with natural gas. In total, the Colorado new energy economy created thousands of new jobs.

Mr. Ritter is a member of the board of the directors of the Energy Foundation and a senior fellow and member of the board of directors of the Advanced Energy Economy Institute. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Colorado State University (1978) and his law degree from the University of Colorado (1981). With his wife Jeannie, he operated a food distribution and nutrition center in Zambia. He then served as Denver’s district attorney from 1993 to January 2005.

The Ritter’s have four children: August, Abe, Sam, and Tally.

A former Canadian diplomat, Colin Robertson is a Senior Strategic Advisor for McKenna, Long and Aldridge LLP living in Ottawa, Canada and working with the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.

He is Vice President and Fellow at the Canadian Defense and Foreign Affairs Institute and Executive Fellow at the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy. Mr. Robertson is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. He is chair of the board of Canada World Youth. He is a member of the board of the Conference of Defense Associations Institute and the advisory board of the North American Research Partnership.

He is a past president of the National Capital Branch of the Canadian International Council. He is an Honorary Captain (Royal Canadian Navy) assigned to the Strategic Communications Directorate.

A career foreign service officer, Mr. Robertson served at the U.N. and Canadian Consulate in New York, in Hong Kong, as Consul General in Los Angeles, and the first head of the Advocacy Secretariat at the Canadian Embassy in Washington. He was part of the team that negotiated the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement and the NAFTA. He also held executive positions at Citizenship and Immigration and the Treasury Board Secretariat and with Petro-Canada International Assistance Corporation. He served as president of the Historica Foundation from 2006-2007.

Mr. Robertson was honored with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 by the Government of Canada.

He was also recognized by the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) with its 2012 “Hot Potato Award” for his work in increasing collaboration between the U.S. and Canadian organizations and stakeholders. Mr. Robertson is the recipient of the Alberta Centennial Medal (2005), the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal (2006), the Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association ‘Friend of the Industry’ (2004), and the distinguished alumnus award from the University of Manitoba (2004).

He writes a column every two weeks on foreign affairs for The Globe and Mail and he is a regular contributor to other media.

Admiral Gary Roughead

Scott D. Sheffield Chairman and CEO, Pioneer Natural Resources

Admiral, U.S. Navy, retired Admiral Roughead is a 1973 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He became the 29th Chief of Naval Operations in September of 2007, after holding six operational commands. He is one of only two officers in the history of the Navy to have commanded both the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific Fleets.

Ashore he served as the Commandant, U.S. Naval Academy where he led the strategic planning effort that underpinned that institution’s first capital campaign. He was the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs, responsible for the Department of the Navy’s interaction with Congress. Admiral Roughead was also the Deputy Commander, U.S. Pacific Command during the massive relief effort following the tsunami of 2004.

As the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Roughead successfully guided the Navy through a challenging period of transition in fiscal, security and personnel matters. He stabilized and accelerated ship and aircraft procurement plans, accelerated the Navy’s capability and capacity in ballistic missile defense and unmanned air and underwater systems, and directed the service’s investigation of climate change and alternative energy.

He reestablished the 4th and 10th Fleets to better focus on the Western Hemisphere and cyber operations respectively. Admiral Roughead introduced bold programs to prepare for the primacy of information in warfare, and was in the forefront in using social media within the Navy. He also led the Navy through changes in law and personnel policy to draw more inclusively than ever before upon the Navy’s greatest strength, its Sailors.

Scott Sheffield, a distinguished graduate of The University of Texas with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering, is Chairman and CEO of Pioneer Natural Resources. In 1979, Mr. Sheffield became the fifth employee of Parker & Parsley Petroleum in Midland, Texas, and sole staff engineer. By 1991 he was Chairman and CEO of Parker & Parsley and under his leadership, Parker & Parsley merged with MESA, Inc. in 1997 to form Pioneer.

Today, Pioneer is a large independent E&P company with 845 million BOE proved reserves, an enterprise value of $34 billion and approximately 4,000 employees. Pioneer is considered a leader in developing liquids-rich shale plays and was ranked as the third most active operator in the United States. Sheffield serves on the boards of the National Petroleum Council, Santos Ltd., and the Maguire Energy Institute of the SMU Cox School of Business.

Admiral Roughead is the recipient of the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards. He has also received awards from several foreign governments.

In retirement, Admiral Roughead is an Annenberg Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and serves on the boards of directors of the Northrop Grumman Corporation and Theranos, Inc. He is a Trustee of Dodge and Cox Funds, the CNA Corporation and The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

David (Dave) Stover brings more than 35 years of oil and gas industry experience to his current role as President and Chief Executive Officer of Noble Energy - a member of the S&P 500 and one of the nation’s leading independent energy companies.

He was appointed CEO in October 2014 and elected to Noble Energy’s board of directors in April 2014. Prior to his current role, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer, along with other executive positions since joining the company in 2002. Before joining Noble Energy, he was BP’s Vice President and Business Unit Leader for the Gulf of Mexico Shelf from 2000 - 2002. From 1994 - 2000, Mr. Stover held various onshore and offshore management positions at Vastar Resources.

Earlier in his career, he held a number of engineering, operations and management positions at ARCO Oil and Gas Company. Active in industry and community organizations, Mr. Stover serves on the board and executive committee of Junior Achievement in Houston and is President of Spindletop International for 2015. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

JB Straubel is currently the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) and part of the founding team at Tesla Motors Inc, where he oversees the technical and engineering design of the vehicles. Mr. Straubel also has responsibility for new technology evaluation, R&D, technical diligence review of key vendors and partners, IP, and systems validation testing.

Prior to working for Tesla Motors, Mr. Straubel was the CTO and co-founder of Volacom Inc along with Harold Rosen.

Volacom worked closely with Burt Rutan at Scaled Composites to design a specialized high-altitude aircraft platform using a novel hydrogen-powered electric power plant. At Volacom, Mr. Straubel co-invented and patented the new long-endurance hybrid propulsion concept that was later licensed to Boeing.

Before Volacom, Mr. Straubel worked with Harold and Ben Rosen at Rosen Motors as a propulsion engineer developing a new hybrid vehicle drivetrain based on a micro turbine and a highspeed flywheel. Rosen Motors ultimately closed but both main technologies carried on with commercial success, the turbine at Capstone Turbine (CPST) and the flywheel at Pentadyne Power Corp. Mr. Straubel was part of the early team at Pentadyne where he designed and built a 1st generation 150kw power inverter, motor-generator controls, and magnetic bearing systems.

In the area of technical expertise, Mr. Straubel has consulted with VC firms Taproot Ventures and Kleiner Perkins in addition to several other private equity investors to conduct technical diligence reviews for many start-ups in the energy and clean technologies category. Mr. Straubel also consults with Amory Lovins at the Rocky Mountain Institute.

Mr. Straubel has had a long personal passion for electric vehicles, including building an Electric Porsche 944 that held a world electric vehicle racing record, a custom Electric Bicycle, and a pioneering new Hybrid Trailer System that he designed while in college. He received a B.S. in Energy Systems Engineering and a M.S. in Energy Engineering, emphasis on energy conversion, both from Stanford University. Outside of Tesla Motors, Mr. Straubel is also an accomplished pilot and holds private pilot, instrument and multi-engine ratings.

Doug Suttles joined Encana as President & CEO in June 2013. With 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry in various engineering and leadership roles, he is responsible for the overall success of Encana and for creating, planning, implementing and integrating the strategic direction of the organization.

Before joining Encana, Mr. Suttles held a number of senior leadership posts at BP, including Chief Operating Officer, BP Exploration & Production, and President, BP Alaska. He was a member of the board of BP America as well as the BP America Operations Advisory Board. Previously, Mr. Suttles served as President of BP Sakhalin Inc., where he was responsible for BP’s activities in Sakhalin, Russia, and its joint venture with Rosneft, a major Russian oil company.

Mr. Suttles held other senior leadership roles in BP, including Vice President for North Sea operations and President of BP’s Trinidadian oil business. Prior to joining BP, Doug completed various production engineering assignments with Exxon from 1983 to 1988. Over the course of his career, Mr. Suttles has volunteered his time and talents to community organizations across North America. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council and sits on the Board of Directors of the American Petroleum Institute, the American Exploration & Production Council and the Independent Petroleum Association of America.

Mr. Suttles has served on the University of Texas Engineering Advisory Board since 2007 and was honored with the school’s Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008.

He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Pete Trelenberg grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1980. Upon graduation, Mr. Trelenberg accepted a position with Exxon Chemical at the Bayway Chemical Plant in Linden, NJ, where he worked in a number of engineering and supervisory positions.

In 1989, Mr. Trelenberg transferred to Exxon Chemcial’s oil additives business where he managed a group of scientists responsible for formulating lubricating oils for many of the world’s leading suppliers. In 1992, he became a Business Analysis and Planning Manager at Exxon Chemical headquarters in Houston. While in Houston, Mr. Trelenberg also worked as a Planning Executive and spent two years as a Project Executive on corporate litigation cases.

In 1997 Mr. Trelenberg moved to Hong Kong and became Asia Business Director for ExxonMobil Chemical’s Oxo Alcohol business. In 2001, he returned to Irving, Texas as Senior Chemical Advisor for Exxon Mobil Corporation, and in 2003, Mr. Trelenberg moved to ExxonMobil’s Torrance, California refinery where he worked as Process Manager and then Refinery Manager.

At Torrance, Mr. Trelenberg was instrumental in establishing programs to improve safety, reliability, environmental compliance, and profitability. In July 2007, he was named head of Planning and Business Development for ExxonMobil Chemical, where his group was responsible for long range strategic planning, development of annual company business plans, and M&A for one of the world’s largest chemical companies.

Mr. Trelenberg assumed his current position as Manager, Environmental Policy & Planning for ExxonMobil Corporation in December 2011. In this position, he advises senior management and the board on climate change, and manages greenhouse gas, sustainability, and regulatory reform activities for ExxonMobil.

Pete has been licensed as a Professional Engineer in Wisconsin and New Jersey. He is married and has three children, and currently resides in Dallas.

Duncan Wood is the director of the Mexico Institute at the Wilson Center. Prior to this, Mr. Wood was a professor and the director of the International Relations Program at the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM) in Mexico City for 17 years. He is a member of the Mexican National Research System (level 2), a member of the editorial board of Foreign Affairs Latinoamerica, and has been an editorial advisor to both Reforma and El Universal newspapers. In 2007, he was a non-resident Fulbright Fellow and, between 2007 and 2009, he was technical secretary of the Red Mexicana de Energia, a group of experts in the area of energy policy in Mexico.

He has been a Senior Associate with the Simon Chair and the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. His research focuses on Mexican energy policy, including renewable energy, and North American relations. He studied in the UK and Canada, receiving his Ph.D. in Political Studies from Queen’s University, Canada, and is a recipient of the Canadian Governor General’s Visit Award for contributions to the Mexico-Canada relationship.

Mark Zoback is the Benjamin M. Page Professor of Geophysics at Stanford University. Dr. Zoback conducts research on in situ stress, fault mechanics, and reservoir geomechanics with an emphasis on shale gas, tight gas and tight oil production. He was one of the principal investigators of the SAFOD project in which a scientific research well was successfully drilled through the San Andreas Fault at seismogenic depth. He is the author of a textbook entitled Reservoir Geomechanics published in 2007 by Cambridge University Press. He is the author/co-author of 300 technical papers and holds five patents. He was the co-founder of GeoMechanics International in 1996, where he was Chairman of the Board until 2008.

Dr. Zoback has received a number of awards and honors, including the 2006 Emil Wiechert Medal of the German Geophysical Society and the 2008 Walter H. Bucher Medal of the American Geophysical Union. In 2011, he was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, in 2012 he was elected to Honorary Membership in the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and he is the 2013 winner of the Louis NÊel Medal of European Geosciences Union. He recently served on the National Academy of Energy committee investigating the Deepwater Horizon accident and the Secretary of Energy’s committee on shale gas development and environmental protection. He currently serves on a Canadian Council of Academies panel investigating the same topic. Dr. Zoback currently serves as a Senior Executive Adviser to Baker Hughes.

Cathy Zoi has spent 30 years in the energy and environmental sectors at the nexus between technology and policy. She is currently Consulting Professor at Stanford University and directs the recently established Energy Transformation Collaborative (ETC). Cathy served in the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary and acting Under Secretary at the Department of Energy, overseeing more than $30 billion in energy investments. She was the founding CEO of both the Alliance for Climate Protection established by former Vice President Al Gore and the NSW Sustainable Energy Development Authority - a $50 million fund to commercialize technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In the private sector, Ms. Zoi has been an investor (Silver Lake and Bayard Capital), a board member (Ice Energy, SES, Pacific Solar), a management consultant (ICF and Next Energy), and an operator (PG&E and C3 Energy), with bases in the U.S. and Australia. In the early 1990s, Ms. Zoi pioneered the Energy Star program at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and was Chief of Staff for the Office on Environmental Policy in the Clinton White House. Cathy has a B.S. in Geology from Duke University and an M.S. in Engineering from Dartmouth College.

About the Organizers The Vail Global Energy Forum is organized by Stanford University’s Precourt Institute for Energy and Precourt Energy Efficiency Center, in collaboration with the Vail Valley Foundation.

The Precourt Institute for Energy serves as the hub of Stanford University’s energy research, education and service efforts, which seek to bring secure, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy to everyone economic and environmentally responsible. Stanford’s energy research spans more than 200 faculty members, as well as dozens of independent labs and academic departments from fundamental science to law. The Precourt Institute supports pioneering research and facilitates collaboration through research grants, interdisciplinary graduate fellowships and conferences. Stanford also helps develop energy-literate leaders and communities through educational programs and the dissemination of research results. The Precourt Institute supports energy education and literacy through faculty appointments, a weekly seminar, internal and external communications, and a weeklong conference for new graduate students.

While scientists and engineers work to invent the low-carbon energy technology of the future, for the next 10 to 20 years the largest reductions in greenhouse gases will come from our more efficient use of electricity, oil and natural gas. The Precourt Energy Efficiency Center (PEEC) promotes economically efficient reductions in energy demand through research, education and two major conferences. As an interdisciplinary research lab, PEEC is part of the Precourt Institute for Energy and Stanford University as a whole. PEEC provides research funding in focus areas such as buildings, transportation, human behavior, system innovation and energy policy. PEEC has helped fund the education, training and dissertation research of nearly 100 students and post-doctoral fellows.

Since 1981, the Vail Valley Foundation (a 501.c.3 nonprofit) has been working toward preserving a reputation for high quality of life in the Vail Valley for its residents and guests.

A commitment to leadership in athletic, cultural, educational and community-based endeavors through annual programs such as the Vail International Dance Festival, Vilar Performing Arts Center, the Vail Global Energy Forum, the Korbel American Ski Classic, Summer Mountain Games and World Cup Ski Racing as well as major international events such as the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships collectively allows us to help keep this community vital and exciting.

In the context of Stanford’s innovative and entrepreneurial culture, the initiative will support, improve, and extend the university’s ongoing efforts related to energy and the environment.

If developed in an environmentally sustainable manner, globally abundant natural gas resources will enable large-scale fuel switching for electrical power generation. This will dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution in many countries, while enhancing energy security and economic growth.
