Dear Friends, The end of each year always presents an interesting dichotomy. For some, it provides an opportunity to look back at previous accomplishments, while for others, the yearend signals the chance to wipe the slate clean and start anew. As the Vail Valley Foundation prepares to launch headlong into 2014, the backwards glance that this Year in Review represents reveals an extremely busy and productive time for both the organization and the community we serve. As the cover of this publication depicts, the Foundation is the common thread, interwoven throughout the entire Vail Valley. With the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships now prominent on the horizon, the planning and preparation for this prestigious event has been shifted into a higher gear as the world will be on our collective doorstep in slightly over one year. The world debut for the new ladies’ racecourse in Beaver Creek was recently completed and we now look to the One Year Kickoff Celebration in February. We also enjoyed the second year of our collaboration with The Youth Foundation. The merge has truly ensured that we can all continue to focus on providing wonderful ongoing educational programs for the full spectrum of students in this community. In this regard, we also celebrated our first $1 million education donor and increased the number of children served through our programs, while also setting a new record for funds raised via the Star Dancing Gala. The first phase of a very exciting project was completed in June as an enhanced Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater was opened to the public, featuring new terraced lawn seating, new restrooms on the

east side of the venue and an overall facelift, with new stucco color and rock façade throughout. We are equally excited to be underway with Phase II of the Amphitheater renovation, which will include a new exterior courtyard and the Ford Family tribute structure. From a cultural perspective, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Vail International Dance Festival in style, with ticket sales surpassing all previous records and unprecedented media coverage. In addition, the Vilar Performing Arts Center enjoyed another stellar year, with headliners including comedian Robin Williams and opera superstars Jonas Kaufmann and Anna Netrebko. Along the way, our annual slate of events and programs continued to grow as well, with a new title sponsor, significantly increased spectator numbers and expanded television coverage for the GoPro Mountain Games, while also hosting two stages of the USA Pro Challenge cycling event. However, if there has been one thing that has characterized the Vail Valley Foundation throughout the years, it is the fact that we are continually focused on the horizon, constantly searching for the next great addition to the Vail Valley community. The 2015 World Championships are obviously a primary focus as we head into 2014, while we are pleased to welcome the USA Pro Challenge back to

Vail for the iconic Time Trial event, this time on a Saturday. Add to this some dynamic new education initiatives that will be launched in the coming year and there is indeed much to look forward to in the coming 12 months. None of this would be possible without the continued support of YOU, our Vail Valley Foundation Family, both within our community and those extended members that we are so fortunate to benefit from sharing some of their time, as well as their generosity. The following pages will provide you with a unique snapshot of the year that was 2013 for the Vail Valley Foundation. We encourage you to revisit some of the great moments that our community enjoyed, while also looking ahead to the exciting year that is to come in 2014. The past year has truly been exceptional, not only for the Vail Valley Foundation, but for the entire Vail Valley, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to share the fruits of the next year with you. Together, we do indeed Inspire Lives and Enrich our Community.

ATHLETICS Birds of Prey

November 3–December 2, 2012

The 2012 edition of the Audi FIS Birds of Prey would prove to be the season launching pad for Mr. GS, America’s Ted Ligety, as the 28-year-old from Park City, Utah once again claimed the top step of the Giant Slalom podium in Beaver Creek, kicking off a season that would not only see him win a trio of gold medals at the World Alpine Ski Championships and the season-long World Cup discipline title, but also post historic winning margins in his specialty. “Right now, Ted is Mr. GS,” offered eventual World Cup Overall champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria. “Maybe we should make him ski two or three gates more than the rest of the field.” Earlier in the week, the speed events featured a decidedly Italian flair as Christof Innerhofer claimed the win in Downhill, while teammate Matteo Marsaglia topped the podium in Super-G. The win was the first World Cup victory of Marsaglia’s career, a fact that he attributed it to the fact that the Italian team was “getting good pasta” in Beaver Creek. NBC continued their prime network television spot on Sunday with the Downhill show, while the NBC Sports Network also aired shows for the Downhill, Super-G and Giant Slalom, including going live with the second run of GS. Additional on-site television included broadcasters from five nations, including crews from Eurosport, Austria, Norway, Switzerland and Italy. Nearly 300 million viewers watched the races around the globe, while web and social media

“There's going to be a lot of wide eyes when the rest of the world gets their first look at the slope (Raptor) at the end of November. I think it's going to be one of the more popular downhills on the women's World Cup tour.” Leanne Smith, U.S. Ski Team

impressions totaled nearly 3.5 million. On site spectator totals were also impressive as the warm sunny weather brought out over 16,000 race fans over the course of the three days. As with the 2013 Beaver Creek World Cup, the races in November and December, along with the 2014 World Cup event, will provide extremely valuable test opportunities for numerous operational aspects as we approach the 2015 World Championships.

Winter Mountain Games February 8–10, 2013

The sophomore edition of the Winter Mountain Games presented by Eddie Bauer took Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak by storm as the celebration of adventure sports, music, art and the great outdoors once again showcased another side of winter. Professional and amateur athletes from around the globe competed for the $60,000 prize purse in Mixed Climbing; Mountain, Big Air, Cross Country and Dual Slalom On-Snow Biking; Nordic and Telemark Skiing; Ski Mountaineering and Snowshoe Racing. Highlights included a combination evening event, consisting of Slopestyle Bike Best Trick and Telemark Big Air, going off a huge jump side by side, along with the Mixed/ Ice Climbing event on a 50-foot tall man-made wall, with a head-to-

head format. In addition, a trio of free concerts helped anchor the nighttime activities. In its second year, the Winter Mountain Games enjoyed a 68% increase in overall event attendance, while recording a 58% increase in the economic impact for the Town of Vail. Total social media impressions for the event were over 10.5 million. However, the 2013 Winter Mountain Games, presented by Eddie Bauer were not without challenges, most notably the decision by the inaugural title sponsor not to renew their partnership with the event. The third installment of Vail’s Winter Mountain Games will come during February of 2016 as we made the decision to place a two-year hiatus on the hosting of the Games in order to help facilitate the ramp up to the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.

American Ski Classic March 20–24, 2013

On and off the racecourse, the 31st annual Korbel American Ski Classic was an exciting display from the outset as Austria’s Kilian Albrecht and Sweden’s Anja Paerson not only battled through a star-studded field, but also the gauntlet thrown down by Mother Nature to capture Volvo Legends Giant Slalom crowns as a spring storm engulfed Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak. Former U.S. Ski Team downhiller Chad Fleischer’s leopard-spotted helmet blazed the trail to Ford Cup gold as the two-time U.S. National Downhill champion led his Korbel Krush team to victory in the celebrity team race. The on-hill action concluded with the second annual Legends Team Relay, a continuous dual Giant Slalom race, featuring two five-member teams representing the United States and Team

International. Despite falling behind in the early going, Team USA battled back in the latter matchups to bring home the gold. With the racing concluded, the 2013 Korbel American Ski Classic came to an extremely fitting end Saturday evening as the Tamara McKinney was inducted into the International Ski Racing Hall of Fame at the Legends of Skiing Banquet in Beaver Creek.

GoPro Mountain Games June 6–9, 2013

The 2013 GoPro Mountain Games, marked the twelfth annual celebration of adventure sports, lifestyle and music, with this year’s event representing the fifth year that the Vail Valley Foundation has organized the GoPro Games. Vail Village was once again vibrant and crowded over the four-day event weekend. With a new title partner in GoPro and an expanded national television package, the Games continued their steady annual growth, solidly maintaining their position as the nation’s top celebration of summer adventures sports and lifestyle. New to the Mountain Games in 2013 were elevated Slopestyle Bike and Slackline competitions, with Slopestyle designated as an FMB Silver event, while the Gibbon Slackline competition served as the World Championships for the sport. The IFSC Bouldering World Cup also celebrated its sixth time in America, with all of these competitions having taken place at the GoPro Mountain Games. During the course of the four days of the event, over 2,300 pro and amateur athletes took to the various staring lines, while over 53,000 spectators took in the action, all resulting in an estimated $4.7 million economic impact for the Town of Vail. The 2013 GoPro Mountain Games story was chronicled via three unique shows on NBC Sports Network, along with multiple re-airings on Universal Sports and Outside Television, with

a potential household reach of 594 million and 528,000 estimated viewers. Total social media impressions numbered just shy of 15.5 million, while top tier media placements included coverage on CNET, Spike TV, Outside Magazine, Gizmodo, GrindTV and others.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge August 19–25, 2013

The 128 riders in the 2013 edition of the USA Pro Challenge covered 600 miles of some of the toughest terrain in Colorado over the course of the seven stages of the race. However, two of those stages, the Steamboat to Beaver Creek race and the Vail Time Trial, definitely played a significant role in determining the rider that wore yellow for the final time in Denver. The Queen Stage of the 2013 Pro Challenge from Steamboat Springs to Beaver Creek presented the riders with a challenging day that included five climbs and ended in a downpour of rain. In a show of strength, Columbian climber Janier Alexis Acevedo powered up the road to Beaver Creek to take the stage win. Following just behind was Tejay van Garderen who took over the yellow jersey of overall race leader heading into the Individual Time Trial in Vail. Reigning World Championship Slalom gold medalist and overall World Cup Slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin presented the lifetime Vail Resorts Epic Pass to Acevedo. The following day, in an uphill battle to the finish, Stage 5 saw van Garderen cross the line first, taking home the stage win and solidifying his hold on the yellow leader jersey. Destroying the record from 2011 when the race used the same course, van Garderen put up an impressive time of 25:01.94. The “race of truth” was won in the final moments though, as he put four seconds on the second-place finisher, Andrew Talansky. Over the course of the two days of racing, an estimated 35,000 cycling fans crowded into Beaver Creek Village, climbed to the top of Bachelor Gulch and lined the Time Trial course from Vail Village to the Vail Pass cul de sac finish.

2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships Despite the fact that the 2012-13 World Cup competition season had only been in the books for three weeks, attention in Beaver Creek was already focused on this winter as FIS race professionals, a Eurovision production team and members of the U.S. Ski Team’s women’s speed group descended on Beaver Creek April 2-5 for the initial on-snow section test of the new ladies’ downhill racecourse, Raptor, built for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. While FIS Ladies’ Race Director Atle Skaardal and Speed Events Race Director Jan Tischhauser had both walked the course in the fall of 2012, the inspection marked the first time that the two

were able to see the track with snow and racers on it. The test enabled the FIS professionals to have a better idea of how courses should be set, best utilizing the terrain in the hill. Television, headed by host broadcaster lead Michael Koegler of ORF-TV, and the quartet of U.S. Ski Team athletes, including Mikaela Shiffrin, Leanne Smith, Laurenne Ross and Stacey Cook, were experiencing the course for the first time. Over the course of the four-day camp, Shiffrin, Smith, Ross and Cook ran sectional testing for both Downhill and Super-G on the track. The past summer was another extremely busy one on Beaver Creek Mountain with Phase II of the ladies’ speed course construction getting underway, seemingly as soon as the last snow melted from the racecourse. Crews also removed old television cable off the men’s Birds of Prey course, in addition to finishing electrical, telecommunications, fiber connections and safety installation on the ladies’ track. The new Talons Restaurant was completed and utilized as the Media Center for the 2013 FIS Beaver Creek World Cup Weeks races. Talons will also serve as home to the print, broadcast and photo media during the 2015 World Championships competitions.

The 2013 winter and summer performance seasons once again showcased a diverse lineup of entertainment options that included concerts, Broadway musicals, classical music, dance, family programming, comedy and community events. Winter highlights included opera superstars Jonas Kaufmann and Anna Netrebko, California pop legends The Beach Boys, the incredible comedic mind of Robin Williams, and R&B icons Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight. Summer’s standouts featured a plethora of popular shows, including a special one-off performance by Country stars Vince Gill and Amy Grant, rock legend Peter Fampton, comedian Brian Regan and rock sensation Kenny Loggins. In addition, the third edition of the Underground Sound concert series continued to bring great value on great music during the off season. The Vilar Center also continued its role as an invaluable community asset, playing host to a variety of youth performances, fundraising events and the STARS (Support the Arts Reaching Children) series. Over the course of a year, the Vilar Performing Arts Center plays host to approximately 90 performances, with a total estimated audience base of close to 41,000 people.

Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater Long considered the preeminent summer performing arts venue in the region, the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater underwent the first phase of a major facelift in conjunction with the overall renovation slated for Ford Park. The project, dubbed Ford Gardens, represents a public and private partnership of key entities within the Vail community to provide a lasting tribute to President and Mrs. Ford that will be enjoyed by residents and guests forever. Phase I Amphitheater projects included the construction of restrooms on the east side of the venue, along with the terracing of the general admission lawn seating that surrounds the back of the pavilion seating area. Additionally, cosmetic changes to the Amphitheater featured a new stucco color, additional stone faรงade and new counter tops for the concession areas. Phase I was completed by the first week of June. Phase II of the Amphitheater renovation is currently underway, with the major focus being the construction of a new exterior courtyard gathering area that will include the Ford Family Tribute structure.

Free Concerts Bud Light Hot Summer Nights The Bud Light Hot Summer Nights free concert series continues to prove that it is the social event of the summer, turning the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater into the weekly gathering spot for guests and locals alike. This past summer’s highlights included free performances by nationally acclaimed cover band Queen Nation, along with high energy shows, including the Freddie Jones Band, Robert Randolph and the Family Band and Ky-Mani Marley. The series once again included a dance component in conjunction with the Vail International Dance Festival, as the 8150 Urban Dance Challenge returned to officially kicked off the Dance Festival. All told, approximately 40,000 locals and guests enjoyed the nine-show 2013 edition of Bud Light Hot Summer Nights. weekly summer gathering spot for the residents of Eagle and Gypsum. The six-show, family-friendly local event has also cultivated a strong “up valley” fan base that makes the trip west each Thursday in July and now August. There was again a focus on Colorado-based bands in an effort to bring better variety to the series as more than 8,000 music fans packed Eagle Town Park for the free music and kids’ activities at the 2013 edition of the Mo’s Original ShowDown Town series.

Vail International Dance Festival The magnificent Colorado Rockies served as the backdrop as nearly 20,000 spectators from around the globe descended on the Vail Valley to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Vail International Dance Festival, with 11 stellar performances over the two-week showcase of the world’s best dance. A total of eight world premieres were performed during the course of the Festival, including a new work by legendary choreographer

Paul Taylor. For the first time ever, Dance Festival video footage was used to create a 26-minute documentary, which aired twice on Rocky Mountain PBS to over 60,000 households within the state of Colorado. This year’s line-up received unprecedented praise and promotion in a wide variety of print as well as a robust web presence, including YouTube, archiving and updating highlights from Festival performances and rehearsals and a new dancespecific Twitter feed. Other highlights of the 2013 Dance Festival included the first-ever fundraising event, a special UpClose presentation entitled UpCloseFootwork, the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the return of the popular Lil’ Buck and Keigwin + Company. Mainstream dance forms were represented in the Ballroom Spectacular evening, as well as the final Dance TV performance.

EDUCATION Many around the nation would see Vail and Beaver Creek and automatically assume that not only is everyone that lives and works in the Vail Valley wealthy, but also that all of our statefunded services are the best money can buy. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Like many other communities in this country, our leaders are seeing the critical need to carefully examine our public education system and to implement much needed change and reform in order to ensure that our children have the best educational opportunities available to them.

12

EDUCATION

Our school system is under tremendous budgetary pressure and unable to meet all of the needs of each child. The public-private partnership we have created is critically important in addressing the needs of the whole child. These needs include early childhood development, after school academic and enrichment programs, summer academic and recreational programs, teenage mentorship and leadership development, and college and vocational scholarship opportunities.

Early Childhood The Vail Valley Foundation’s Youth Foundation is proud to convene partnerships with key early childhood experts to provide high quality early care learning throughout Eagle County, ensuring that every child from birth through age six has the necessary tools in order to be prepared for both school and success later in life. Beginning with Raising a Reader through Kindergarten Scholarships, the VVF’s Youth Foundation is developing the best chance for success in school by advocating for, supplementing and providing the highest quality preschool education and parenting support for families who cannot afford private preschool education. In this regard, the founding executive director for the Youth Foundation, Kathy Brendza has been hired as the organization’s Early Childhood Learning Specialist. In this new role, she will spearhead the group’s efforts to maximize and enhance the pre-kindergarten and early childhood learning and preparedness opportunities available to the youngest members of the Eagle County community and their families. Smart Parents, Smart Babies The mission of The Smart Parents/Smart Babies program is to ensure every child in Eagle County enters kindergarten at or above grade level. In addition, their parents need to feel empowered and supported to become their child’s first and most important teacher and strongest advocate. Great Start When a child is ill-prepared for kindergarten, it takes an average of nine weeks for them to get caught up to speed, thus potentially widening the achievement gap very early on in their education. Great Start is a six-week summer kindergarten readiness program that introduces children who did not experience a traditional preschool setting prepare for kindergarten. The overall vision for Great Start is that children are kindergarten-ready and learning on a level

academic playing field with their peers to lessen the impact of the achievement gap in Eagle County. Raising a Reader During a home visit every two weeks, children 0-3 years, receive a fresh set of four new books to help them share the joy of reading with their parents. Home visitors develop a relationship with the family and provide support, training and information on how to share books. This experience helps the child build vocabulary and reading skills to succeed in school and establish a lifetime love of reading. Magic Bus The Magic Bus was created to level the playing field for children entering kindergarten, ensuring they are prepared to learn. The Magic Bus overcomes hurdles of transportation and is affordable and accessible as a kindergarten-preparedness program

because it brings the classroom to neighborhoods with underserved families. The overall activities within the program focus on bringing a mobile preschool to under-served neighborhoods with high concentrations of children and to provide opportunities for them to learn academic and social-emotional skills in order to be ready to enter kindergarten. Success at Six Success at Six grants scholarships, partially provided by Vail Valley Foundation’s Youth Foundation, to families in need who wish to have their child attend a qualified full-day kindergarten program. After-school enrichment curriculum activities expose five and six year old at-risk and low-income students to more time in the classroom, focusing on reading, writing and math operations as well as guided reading and writing instruction for English Language Learners.

Elementary and Middle School The Vail Valley Foundation’s Youth Foundation is focused on closing the achievement gap of school children through effective, safe and fun out of school-time programs. Our programs, such as PwrHrs, serve over 1,200 children throughout the school year during after school hours. PwrHrs takes a comprehensive four-pronged approach, providing academic support, fitness and nutrition activities, cultural enrichment experiences and character development opportunities, providing more than 200 contact hours per child on an annual basis. Sowing Seeds Sowing Seeds provides students and their families with a meaningful and hands-on approach to learn about healthy eating and cooking, paving the way for the entire community to create better

eating habits and make healthier choices. The program accomplishes this by implementing and maintaining school gardens in collaboration with a specially aligned school science curriculum. First Notes The First Notes program and curriculum is modeled after Venezuela’s El Sistema initiative, an international model of music education and programming that creates musicians while changing the life trajectory of thousands of kids through ensemble music. Students from Avon Elementary School and Homestake Peak School participate in First Notes for 45 minutes, two to three days per week. Additionally, First Notes incorporates a two week summer camp where students practice four hours per day with one hour of enrichment and a final summer performance at the Bravo Vail! Music Festival.

PWRHRS PwrHrs provides 45 minutes of extended learning opportunities and 45 minutes of enrichment activities to students three to four days per week, with every student benefitting from a small student-to-teacher ratio. Within the PwrHrs program, there is a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio during the extended learning time, which allows for students to get the individualized assistance they do not receive during a typical school day. The additional time spent on academics and participating in safe after-school enrichment activities improves academic scores and promotes social, emotional and physical well-being. PWRHRS Summer As the summer approaches and students have no academic or program enrichment opportunities, they start to slip into what is commonly known as

“The Youth Foundation is a powerful partner with Eagle County Schools. We are convinced that the programs offered to our students are improving their academic achievement and helping them develop as wonderful young people.” Sandra Smyser, former Superintendent of Eagle County Schools

“brain drain” or “the summer slide”, thus leading to lower academic performance and a widening achievement gap. Summer PwrHrs provides additional PwrHrs extended learning programs to keep kids academically and physically engaged during the summer months. Through academic extended learning opportunities, especially in reading, math and science, in addition to enrichment activities such as physical fitness activities, Summer PwrHrs assist kids and educators in maintaining and advancing in their academic performance in a safe, productive and motivational environment. KidSTRONG The Youth Foundation created the KidSTRONG (Kids Stronger Through Recreational Opportunities and Nutritional Guidance) program in 2009, offering engaging educational

and physical activities to elementary and middle school students in Eagle County. Operated during the PwrHrs extended learning program, each KidSTRONG class has a specific lesson plan that includes detailed objectives, a curriculum based game or introduction to a new sport and healthy snack. Over the course of the school year, KidSTRONG promotes overall well-being by providing kids with the foundation to build healthy habits and self-confidence. As a result of the KidSTRONG program, it is estimated that students receive an extra 57 hours of physical activity over the school year while also developing a knowledge surrounding fitness, nutrition and overall wellness. Girl PowHER The Girl PowHER program focuses on drop-out prevention by fostering positive development and school engagement through sports and mentorship. In order to curb the stark statistics for girls in high school, especially girls of color, Girl PowHER uses sports and fitness, combined with mentorship, academic support and emotional support, to keep girls engaged in all aspects of school. Beyond drop-out prevention, Girl PowHER seeks to empower and strengthen situations for all adolescent girls in junior high and high school as this generation of girls faces a wider array of internal and external pressures. Celebrate the Beat Celebrate the Beat classes help children discover their potential by motivating them to believe in themselves, value artistic expression and develop a personal standard of excellence. In addition to providing meaningful experiences in the arts, Celebrate the Beat also provides the opportunity for students to perform their choreographed dance routines several times a year at arts and cultural events throughout the Vail Valley. These performances build confidence and teamwork within each child while also creating a stronger sense of community, humanity and good

will. Without Celebrate the Beat, many students would lack the opportunity to participate in an arts program in conjunction with the traditional school day, after school or during the summer.

NEXT PAGE:

Anti-Bullying The Anti-Bullying initiative provides a costeffective program that instills confidence, increases awareness of bullying and ensures a readiness to prevent bullying through intervention and empowerment. The overall focus of the AntiBullying program is to empower students through martial arts and create a sense of community, safety and support from friends and adults.

Youth Foundation Director of PwrHrs Lee Jones with a pair of proud students.

Academic Soccer The Academic Soccer program provides soccer practices on every Friday afternoon throughout the course of the school year as a reward for good behavior and grades. The program also provides a rotating soccer tournament once a month where students play all day with students from other schools. Participants must be enrolled in The Youth Foundation’s PwrHrs extended learning program. Copa Edwards The program consists of twice weekly soccer practices, as well as a tournament every Sunday for seven weeks. Aside from creating an accessible opportunity for every child in the Vail Valley to participate in the game of soccer, The Youth Foundation also provides all of the necessary equipment, while also offering parents and coaches clinics to teach the rules of the game and youth development techniques.

Academic Excellence Academic support is central to the PwrHrs program. At the middle school level, students receive homework help and one-on-one or small group tutoring. The support of teachers, volunteers and the VVF’s Youth Foundation staff is critical during the difficult middle school years

when students are undergoing dramatic physical, social, emotional and academic changes. In this regard, Colorado State Senator Mike Johnston has agreed to serve as the Youth Foundation’s Academic Excellence Advisor. Johnston’s role will involve the coordination and facilitation of an in-depth study to determine what is currently working well in the Eagle County Public Schools and what is not. This information will then be supplemented with an assessment of the most compelling national trends in terms of education policy, program and interventions that are exhibiting dramatic success or attempting to build new paradigms. The goal of this process will be to identify five significant national ideas that should become high impact areas of focus for the VVF’s Youth Foundation and the Eagle County School District moving forward.

STARS—Support The Arts Reaching Students The Vilar Performing Arts Center’s STARS series of performances is offered to promote artistic, educational and cultural enrichment to local students, with in-school workshops and daytime shows at the theatre. Each year, the Vilar Center provides transportation and tickets to more than 5,000 Eagle and Lake County students to expose them to the thrill of live performing arts

Pre-Collegiate And Scholarships Higher education is not an option for everyone. Many children in Eagle County lack the resources or support systems necessary to pursue the level of education they desire. The VVF’s Youth Foundation bridges these gaps of resources and support through a combination of pre-collegiate programming, scholarship collaboration and the Guardian Scholarships program.

College Scholarships An advanced degree is more important than ever, but college tuition can be out of reach for many. Established by the Foundation in 1992, the scholarship program has grown to the largest collegiate scholarship effort in the Vail Valley, with a total of $1.4 million raised. The VVF awards a variety of scholarships, including the VVF four-year and the June Kang Love of the Arts, along with up to 10 Karri Casner scholarships annually for students attending Colorado Mountain College. Guardian Scholars & Scholarship Program Equipping students with the educational and interpersonal skills necessary to become self-supporting, competent adults. Success is dependent on a team effort that combines

Vail Global Energy Forum Following the successful inaugural Vail Global Energy Forum in March of 2012, the VVF again partnered with Stanford University’s Precourt Institute for Energy to host the second edition of this public forum in March of 2013. The Vail Global Energy Forum examines potential ways to transition to a global energy system that is affordable, clean, sustainable and secure. Featured speakers and panelists included distinguished government officials, corporate executives, leading energy research scientists, venture capitalists, investors and world-renowned journalists.

The 2013 agenda featured updates on key energy issues, including Making Behavioral Changes; Investing in Renewables and Clean Technologies; and Advances in Newly Emerging “Hot Button” Energy Topics. Through a partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS, a Colorado Energy focused broadcast of Colorado State of Mind featured VGEF Executive Director Carl Colby and Vail Resorts VP of Public Affairs & Sustainability Beth Ganz. In addition, Rocky Mountain PBS aired portions of the event in March and April. The forum also provided scholarships to approximately 80 regional college students to attend the event, as well as providing live streaming of the event, with 10 universities participating.

COMMUNITY Vilar Center Community Performance Fund Each year, this fund underwrites the technical, production, labor and theatre usage cost for approximately ten local dance, music and theatrical performances. The fund provides local artists the opportunity to experience the excitement of performing on an incredible stage with professional production qualities and support. Each year, the fund supports Vail Valley community arts groups with in-kind contributions exceeding $60,000.

Vilar Center Community Use Fund The Vilar Performing Arts Center opens its doors to other Eagle County nonprofits each year by hosting fundraising events, lectures and performances at a reduced cost to organizers. Approximately 25 local groups take advantage of the Fund annually.

COMMUNITY

Arts In Healing Created in 2009, the Vilar Performing Arts Center joined forces with the Vail Valley Medical Center to launch Arts in Healing, a program that brings various performing artists from the Vilar Center’s lineup into the Medical Center’s healthcare settings. The program provides performances and interactive arts events to individuals who, due to illness, age, disability and challenging socio-economic and geographic circumstances, have little or no access to the arts.

Nurturing Future Artists The Vilar Center provides local music, dance and drama students tickets to select performances at no charge, giving them the rare opportunity to experience renowned artists and fueling their dreams of one day performing on stage.

Vail Valley Athlete Commission In conjunction with Vail Resorts, the Town of Vail and the Beaver Creek Resort Company, the Vail Valley Foundation annually awards financial support to deserving individual athletes competing in an international arena to assist with training and travel expenses. In 2013, the Commission awarded funds to 12 local athletes, enabling them to compete around the globe. Athlete Commission grants are awarded twice a year, once for summer athletes and a second process for winter athletes. Athletes receiving funding in 2013 included Heidi Kloser, Katharine Irwin, Kjell Ellefson, Lucas Evans, Ralph Green, Sylvan Ellefson, Taylor Seaton and Amanda Ortiz.
