CONTEXTUALISING INTERIOR SPACE MAKING
Hospitality Design
(guided by Prashant Pradhan | Bharath P) Studio 9 | Monsoon 2021
Studio focuses on deeper understanding ‘culture’. It has explored the interface between interior architecture and its ‘context’ in hospitality design. Hospitality design that references the local context has always existed but, a new genre was created when architects like Geoffrey Bawa and Kerry Hill designed hotels in Sri Lanka and South East Asia. The endeavor of this studio will be to ask how can architecture help make a visit memorable?
Surrounded by tea gardens and the Himalayan range resort is located nearby a river flowing through it. The complex is designed as fragmented blocks, with blocks of landscape and waterbody weaved through it incorporating the context into the site. Multiple courtyards were resultant of weaving landscape and water body into it. Intention is to provide each and every space their own view and experience that one can remember. Flowing through individual spaces one experiences journey of different elements being woven together.

Studio 10 | Spring 2022
The project “Playscape” is a children’s play and learn intervention programmed in the Old Stock Exchange building in Mahurat pol in chowk in old city. This building is an old colonial structure with various styles is marked as a heritage building. The building walls have an ornate craving in Dhangadhra stone which has a front porch with craved timber doors, framed by semicircular arches and a s segmented arch in the center. The building currently is in not in use, is severely damaged, and is encroached at the rear end. Interior spaces have an array of issues from chipping to broken windows and unsightly elements lying around. The project has 3 main design intervention.
- Clearing the extensions on east which have be added later to create a public corridor to Queens tomb and to open the east façade to its original form.
- Refurbishing the dilapidated elements in the building skin and roof.
- And the final design, is adding new structural elements in interior to create a playscape keeping intact the building skin.
Elaborating the design, the playscapes are created using steel grid structure which connects different floors of original structure. Each floor plates are made up of wood interspersed with coloured glass. Various activities of play are designed at different floors using interactive games.
The intervention is an insert which opens the building to all floors and connects to the urban street connecting it to local public without touching the building’s fascade to perceive its beauty, grandeur and visual enhancement of its architectural order. The new steel grid structure with wooden floor plates and colored glass allows children to wander, to hear one’s voice and see from across and above. It allows to hop around through different levels of floors with play elements such as nets, slides and swings.

Hanging metal elements were created to make additional spaces.
Designer respected the original structure and added metallic elements to create spaces and strengthen the original structure

The Studio will explore the issue of creating emotionally immersive retail space at every stage in the process and at every scale from the overall design the smallest detail. Particular focus will be given to crafting the immaculate details essential to delivering the quality of retail experience now required.
Biopop is a brand name for the paint of all kinds. It has different uses ranging from painting a wall to artistic purposes. The pigments and dyes are made using natural resources like grass, berries, soil, turmeric and more. Not only it reduces the amount of VOCs in nature but also does not produce chemical waste during its production process compared to contemporary chemical-based paints, which are hazardous to nature.
Retail design for “Biopop” brand has approach such that user experiences store and its product in a seamless way. Primary products are paints which are displayed in the center of every pause point in a circular displayed imagined as color wheel which can pursue through the reflection in the ceiling of part glass above and their color swatches partitions which guides the path. There is a division of space for lounge and to interact with the experts there as per customer’s requirement. Appreciating use of nature colors in art is also being displayed on wall of the lounge area.
SMALL SPACES FOR BIG LIVES
(guided by Errol Reubens | Ratna Shah) Studio 4 Spring 2019
Urban living spaces are growing increasingly smaller in size especially in the city centres of bigger cities. People reuse terraces, narrow tube houses, and basements of existing buildings, to find living space that is more affordable. The studio is going to look at one of those scenarios, where the Millennials are now reclaiming roof-tops, where, these single room spaces on the topmost floor of existing buildings helps them connect with nature, yet living close to the heart of the city, whilst living far from the crowded streets below.
Urban Loft (studio apartment) is a proposal made as a part of an investigation into the effects of population growth and overcrowding on interior space. The project started with learning modular furniture, pivot box (space-saving furniture) and the importance of staircase in space. The final design began with the idea of metal extensions on rooftops as a part of studio apartment and workspace for millennials. The proposed site is a rooftop of an old Parsi apartment know as Sitaram Sadan located in Marin lines, Mumbai.
MODULAR (WOODEN) FURNITURE - By using various compositions and variations different arrangements of seating are arranged for any space.
STRETCHING THE TIGHT: UNFOLDING IMAGINATIVELY - Taking the pivot box from the previous exercise and placing it on an empty box of 5.5M x 5.5M x 5M which is then perched on a machan. After that, introducing a staircase to the top, in relation with the placement of pivot box and fenestrations
PIVOT BOX - A box of 2.4M x 2.1M has to include living, dining, study, pantry, bed and storage by using different pivot points at various positions. These functions are pulled out and can be packed inside the box. (House in a suitcase)

Patel-Vadodaria design research studio is an awardwinning architecture, interior design and landscape design practice based in Ahmedabad, India, founded by Dr Keyur Vadodaria and Megha Patel-Vadodaria. Their studio works at a variety of scale, ranging from the design of a door handle to buildings and its surroundings.
During 6 months, I have got the opportunity to work on very different scale projects dealing with residential design. Houses for Mehta Brothers is an ongoing project whose architecture, landscape and interior design are in the scope of work for the studio. The design of these two houses for two brothers is based on the idea of celebrating the spirit of a joint family.
Other projects dealt with different furniture for the required private bungalow and apartment. Along with that multiple site visits gave a lot of exposure to learning.

The design of these two houses for two brothers is based on the idea of celebrating the spirit of a joint family. It is a modern contemporary home with Indian sensibilities. It will be warm and personal, elegant and understated. The scope of work included interior design look and feel presentation with material, scale & volume visualization.

SITE VISIT TO ON GOING PROJECTS
Lockdown 2020
Client - Bhimbhai Odedra (my father)The project began with the demolition of the house. Extension work commenced just before the nationwide lockdown. The client wanted a thorough makeover of all of the bathrooms and kitchen with one additional bathroom. Some small requirements were like removing partition walls, extending rooms, new paint scheme and polishing.
I was an integral part of the designing team along with Ar. Aakash Vithalani who made the final decisions and management.
I independently designed as well as executed the remodeling of my own room which is located on the first floor. The design had to be done in a way that is less time consuming, simple and keeping in mind the limited availability of materials in the market.
The base ideology for my room mainly had a few prerequisites such as a wardrobe, garden view face bed and most importantly a workstation with the flexibility of moving the table towards the garden view and a bookshelf cum open storage orthogonally to the table to have a sense of enclosure.
