The interiors of Joali Resort in Maldives’ Muravandhoo Island offer a limitless and dynamic experience. Designed by Autoban, the resort is a perfect combination of contemporary and luxury highlighting a Maldivian spirit and an island culture. This artistic resort is inspired by Her, the feminine spirit of the brand.

Why did you choose this hotel room? The basis for the choice – rational/ emotional/experiential

The villa at first glance gives calm, connected to outside yet have ample amount of privacy & seclusion. All the elements coming together gives vibe that it in Maldives. The way you enter the room looking directly straight into the sea view without revelation of whole not all at once but gradually is what makes it interesting. From each & every part of the room the function has been aligned directly facing to the sea making it connected to outside context. It is the experience that gives of one being secluded within a cozy space having an amazing view to look at makes it unique.

How does this connect to the context? Context – local – physical & cultural / brand / typology of hotel rooms

The villa has different elements that connects it to its local context and its brand identity. The choice of materials and forms in the structures as well as the production techniques presents the abstract and unique forms in the Maldivian spirit. Local craftsmen in Maldives are famous for wood craving, lathe & lacquer work. Therefore they incorporated wooden craved partitions within the room giving the local vibe. The roof structure and form has taken from its local traditional houses. Smooth transitions continuing with rounded corners, brings structure a soft character which resembles feminine spirit of its brand identity “Her”.

What experience do you think that the designer had intended?

think designer’s intent was to create a warm, cozy yet full of luxury with local spirit vibe villa. The importance to context of outside was fully justified by opening up all the functions towards it. Wooden structures were meant to give a rich but humble look. Furniture were used at a minimum level yet sophisticated. Their multi-layered design approach can also be seen in all surfaces, continuing with single material, provide a backdrop with the layer system and hand-carved wooden panels that separate spaces create a visual richness with the unique design. How does this design of the room measure up with the architect’s style?

Whole of resort and its interior is done by Autoban, Internationally renowned, Istanbul-based multidisciplinary design studio Autoban was founded in 2003. Its reputation for thoughtfulness, experimentation and craftsmanship in their projects which can be seen in this project too by including context and craftsmanship with an abstract and functional layer. Their approach is very much space centric, blending with sophistication, and minimal forms with rich materials clearly seen by minimal use of furniture but with rich and local materials.

How does this design of the room measure up with the brand identity?

The design approach for the project takes the inspiration from its brand identity “Her”. Her is a feminine spirit that has intellect and a delicate maturity. Her is sophisticated and multi-faceted, she likes to constantly travel, create a story from the whole of her experiences and collect this story through artworks that she acquires, all a reflection of her lively and free spirited character. Her devotion to the natural can be read from the natural palette of colors in the structure, light beige and softest tones of brown used on the side. Even the edge roundness and curves used defines the feminine spirit of its brand identity.

Explore

Traditional maldives house used coconut leaves thatching and timber wood structure as roof. It is an important renewable and ecologically sound local material that blends well with the natural environment of Maldives.

Thatched walls and roofs provided good insulations and stopped condensation and fungal growth due to its ability to ‘breath’

Smooth transitions continuing with rounded corners were inspired from it’s brand identity “Her” which brings structure a soft character which resembles feminine spirit of its brand identity.

Natural palette of colors in the structure, light beige and softest tones of brown used of “Her” devotion to the natural can be seen.

The round and soft shapes forms extend to the villa’s exterior spaces, from the wooden beams upholding the covered patio deck to the soft, rounded edges of the walls and circular side tables on which to place your cocktail.

Local craftsmen in Maldives are famous for wood craving lathe & lacquer work. Therefore they incorporated wooden craved partitions within the room giving the local vibe.

The hand-carved wooden panels that separate areas create a visual richness with the unique designs that reference the authentic Maldivian culture.

The concept of open-air toilet comes from the traditional Gifili, traditional open-air bathroom, followed by the word “belun”, meaning “to look or peep through”.

As you walk towards the water villa anticipation forms, as you see Maldivian shed like roof made by coconut thatching give you local vibe floating in middle of ocean. But as soon as you enter you are directly taken away the warmth and coziness the villa gives its color palette and lightning. You are not yet revealed the whole room. Straight up your eyes are caught up by the breathtaking view of ocean.

Experiential mapping

Referential context - Tea bunglow, Bengal

As you walk up on your left you big bed furnished with soft furnishings facing directly to ocean. The flooring over all the interior villa area is monotonous with terrazzo but yet the separation of spaces and privacy yet connected is being well defined by wooden craved panels. The room is kept quite neutral with splashes of colors like in art pieces or cushions.

Then as you turn towards right you see a large bathtub sitting in middle of space giving significance of bathing. It is faced directly towards the ocean in large volume of room giving the luxury and relaxing vibes while you bathe. The marble counter top on both of sinks feels luxurious.

You are then directly drawn to the vast horizon of oceanic view and the sound of waves that gives while you are in the outer lounge area. Spaces have been created to leisure facing towards the view. When you’re inside the pool facing ocean it feels like you’re inside ocean itself with the panoramic view that it offers. Even while you’re outside and other villa nearby to it the sense of privacy is well maintained with partitions and feels you’re the only one secluded.

Overall the villa gives you glimpse of local vibe with the warmth and luxurious with minimal furniture giving the importance towards the view and context. All the functions are directly aligned towards the ocean with a well-defined sense of enclosure and giving you the privacy. Each spaces is thoughtfully done to make you feel relax throughout your stay.

Located among the Indian Himalayas, a steep mountain landscape through which the sacred Ganges River meander, is a nature that overpowers all human construction. The project was developed following a trip to the Indian Himalayas, where they studied the traditional vernacular architecture developed over millennia. This architecture evolved in response to the rugged mountain topography and the locally available materials, and this established the foundation of the project.

The resort, located 250 km north-east of New Delhi, incorporates the main hotel block and a series of villas on a vast and steep site overlooking the Ganges River.

The villas, as in a traditional Himalayan village, are laid out as a series of pavilions built on a succession of stepped terraces kept in place by massive stone retaining walls.

The architecture of the project takes advantage of the materials found locally: river stones for the retaining walls, slate for the roofs and flooring, and large wooden frames for the joinery.

Steep 45-degree single lean-to roofs, the eaves of which almost touch the water below.

Central Pavilion floor is made with Structural Glass to view the Water lilies and the fish which populate the pond.

Yoga centre provides a 360 panaroma framed view of the Himalyan range annd Ganges with a light rays coming through opening located on ceiling.

Traditional Himalayan construction techniques intermix stone walls with vast cantilevered cedar beams. This traditional building style called Kath-Kuni has been reinterpreted here with modern materials, with steel replacing the cedar beams that are now banned from exploitation in the Himalayas.

WEAVING

Surrounded by tea gardens and the Himalayan range resort is located nearby a river flowing through it. The complex is designed as fragmented blocks, with blocks of landscape and waterbody weaved through it incorporating the context into the site. Multiple courtyards were resultant of weaving landscape and water body into it. Intention is to provide each and every space their own view and experience that one can remember. Flowing through individual spaces one experiences journey of different elements being woven together.

Partition planes acting as transparency element along with roof at different height allowing outdoor to come through furniture is choosen which is more of contrast solid to it. Planes imagined as weave looms and circulation at different spaces as weft or a thread being woven into a experience built with curiosity.

Material and colours were choosen keeping in mind that it is not overpowering the outdoor and blends with it by taking earthern tones throughtout all the spaces. Different flooring materials are choosen to differesiate levels. Minimal colours are used and only a selective are highlighted by keeping others muted.

Locally sourced materials like teak wood and Jute strings used in partitions were preferred.
