THE VALENCIA OF…. Álex Vidal

Fashion Designer His career spanning over 35 years has taken place among patterns and seams, first at the Bluemarine and Valentino studios and then by creating his own brand, Álex Vidal. At present this Valencian is one of the most renowned designers on the national stage and has turned Valencia’s Fashion Week into the country’s second most representative catwalk. Valencia Tourism. What would you highlight about Valencia in the blink of an eye? Álex Vidal. It’s a modern city full of art and fashion. VLC. What makes it unique and what is its potential? A.V. It’s unique because of its light and its sea. Its potential is its people, its culture and the combination of its ancient traditions with the new. My favourite place to go for walks is without a doubt next to the sea, but I think the most special neighbourhood is Ciutat Vella. 6

V LC . Do you have any special anecdote related to the city? A.V. Being so small, but having grown so much in such a short time, people say hello to each other on the street because we know each other. VLC. Which aspect of the city inspires your work most? A.V. Its light, it’s reflected in all of my designs. VLC. What would you highlight from Valencia’s Fashion Week? A.V. It has become the second national catwalk in no time. VLC. What makes it different from other cities? A.V. The character of the Valencianos. VLC. What would you tell world travellers so they chose Valencia as a destination? A.V. That it’s the most innovating city in Spain. VLC. What would you put in your suitcase to remember Valencia? A.V. A bottle with sea water, a picture of a sunset and a litre of horchata.

YOU CANNOT MISS... CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES You will be surprised by this avant-guard complex, in which the architecture of Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela plays a major role. Enter Europe’s largest leisure-cultural complex and enjoy the art, science and nature on display. Feel the action in the Hemisféric. Submerge yourself in the immensity of the oceans in El Oceanográfico. Experiment with science and technology in the Principe Felipe Science Museum. Admire El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, an emblem of the scenic arts. "Fallero" MUSEUM The “Fallas” festival extends its warmest welcome. Discover all the details of this world-renowned festival. Admire the papier maché figures (“ninots”) that have been saved from the flames by virtue of popular pardon since 1934. Jardín del Turia (TURIA PARK) Don’t miss the magnificent urban landscape composed of the bridges dating from different periods and constructed in a range of architectural styles that cross the Turia Gardens. Seek out Puente de la Exposición, el Puente de las Flores, el Puente del Mar or l’Assut d’Or and you will get the photo that you are after. But be careful! Don’t miss the Giant Gulliver that lies in the park. He’s waiting to share games and adventures with the youngest and smallest tourists. Palau de la Música This glass-clad, avant-guard building is well worth contemplating. Inside, the most prestigious international directors and performers are present to offer you first-class concerts. THE EXPOSITION PALACE Can you imagine building a majestic modernist palace in only 70 days? Well, you don’t have to. It can be found in Valencia. It was built as the headquarters of the 1909 Regional Exhibition. A jewel that must not be missed.

YOU CANNOT MISS... Juan Carlos I rOyal marina Don’t leave Valencia without visiting this luxury leisure port, created for the 32nd America’s Cup and the spectacular setting of the F1 Grand Prix of Europe. Enjoy unforgettable evenings in a unique seafront setting presided over by the majestic Veles e Vents building (an avant-guard architectural masterpiece created by David Chipperfield and Fermín Vazquez). Seafront promenade and beaches For those wishing to experience the true Mediterranean essence, we suggest a relaxing stroll northbound along the Seafront Promenade from the Royal Marina. The 7 km promenade links northern coast beaches, known as “Malva-rosa” and “El Cabanyal-Arenas”. The fine sand and warm waters have received the highest environmental awards. The average 19ºC temperature allows visitors to enjoy the beaches throughout the entire year whilst sampling the rich variety of typical Valencian dishes on offer at the prestigious local restaurants. Blasco Ibañez Museum-Birthplace If you are an avid reader, you must not overlook a visit to the house of this universal story-teller. You will be able to contemplate a wide range of everyday objects that served as inspiration for this great writer in his portraits of Valencia and its customs. Holy Week Maritime Museum Holy Week takes on a special flavour in Valencia. The celebration, which was started by fishermen and sailors, continues today with a unique Mediterranean charisma. Discover all the details of this world-renowned festival within this highly interesting museum.

YOU CANNOT MISS... Albufera Nature park Located very near to the city centre, this park is among the natural spaces with the most environmental and ecological value in Europe. The Albufera Nature Park, dominated by the largest lake in Spain, is a natural paradise for many bird species. Don’t miss the spectacular sight of the sun setting over the waters as seen from a typical fishing boat, or a stroll through the extensive pine forest and dune formations that separate the lake from the Mediterranean Sea. Southern beaches Enjoy the extensive seafront found next to the Nature Park. You will find over 16km of fine golden sands, bathed by the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. You will be able to enjoy a pleasant swim in this idyllic natural park throughout the entire year. El Palmar At the heart of the Park we find the village of El Palmar, which was actually an island until the 14th century. It has served as the inspiration for various masterpieces of universal literature. Visitors can enjoy typical Valencia dishes, such as Paella, Arrós a Banda (seafood rice), All i Pebre and La Espardenyà, which contain eels from the lake. A day on the golfing greens The city of Valencia is home to the second best golf course in Europe and one of the fifty top courses in the world. the “El Saler” Golf Club, situated next to the sea and within the Albufera Nature PArk. Boasting one of the toughest courses on the international circuit, the Club has been host for many years to prestigious golf championships such as the Seve Trophy.

turisvalencia.es activities for young tourists

Arqui offers you a challenge l a strol e k a t If you , Valencia d n u o r a ound to b e r a u ectural yo it h c r a t find grea .. . ts contras

But now you have to find the seven differences between these images

SAVOURING THE MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE Valencian cuisine reflects the many outside influences that it has received throughout

the centuries. The rice introduced into the area by the Arab settlers gave rise to what is without doubt our most famous dish and a symbol of Spanish cuisine throughout the world: paella.

More info of restaurants in page 67-69 56

ď Ž Although the traditional Valencian paella is made from chicken, rabbit and vegetables, discover how a multitude of combinations of rice, meat, fish and vegetables allow for over 40 variants of this succulent and versatile dish.

Additionally, Valencia’s restaurants offer everything from the most traditional cooking to “nouvelle cuisine”. Savour the enormous variety of succulent dishes and enjoy the endless number of hideaways in which to sample the very best international cuisine. Whatever your favourite culinary or decorative style: Valencia has what you are looking for.

Whether you choose one of the city’s restaurants which hold a Michelin Star or a more traditional option, you will find an offer that will satisfy even the most demanding palate. Our culinary offer is completed by additional gastronomical pleasures such as: the traditional “horchata” drink accompanied by wafers known as “fartons”; a mixture of champagne

and orange juice known as “agua de Valencia” and a wide range of local wines, includes whites from the Alto Turia and Serranía regions and reds from Requena, Utiel and Campo de Líria. All of these excellent wines have been awarded certificates of origin and quality (D.O.). 

57

SHOPPING A combination of tradition, craftsmanship, innovation and avant-guard design has converted Valencia into a cosmopolitan city with an intense commercial offer. If you are a fan of urban shopping, Valencia has what you are looking for.

More info for shopping in page 71 58

Treat yourself to: Craft items converted into works of art and created with ancient techniques. The elegance of the most prestigious international fashion, jewellery and decoration companies. Exclusive designs by increasingly well-known local designers. Local products of the highest quality.

The latest collections with the stamp of the Valencia CF. There are shopping areas throughout the whole city offering something for everyone: Historical centre (crafts and urban design) Poeta Querol-La Paz (the most exclusive international companies)

Colón and Eixample (the leading fashion and decoration zone) If you are looking to lose yourself in hideaways with a special charm, don’t forget to visit: Central Market: A culinary cathedral located in a modernist jewel. Plaza Redonda: A unique spot hidden in the heart of

the city, where you can find true works of art made by local craftsmen. “Calle de las Cestas”: offering a host of establishments selling handmade wicker and leather goods. L’ Escuraeta: An open-air market held in Plaza de la Reina during May offering traditional ceramic goods. 59

LEISURE The city comes alive as night falls. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer to immerse yourself in an intensive nightlife or if you’re looking for a relaxing evening in a select atmosphere: Valencia has a special spot for you. You only have to seek it out. 60

turisvalencia.es leisure 2010 Enjoy the pleasure of: Mediterranean nights beside the sea in exclusively-designed open-air terraces Relaxing evenings in spacious, traditional restaurants. An international atmosphere in cosmopolitan, avant-guard venues There are many leisure zones distributed throughout the city: Barrio del Carmen (a melting pot of different

cultures in the very heart of the city). Cánovas, Juan Llorens, Aragón and Blasco Ibáñez (traditional nightlife zones) City of Arts and Sciences (the freshest, most avantguard proposals). Marina Real Juan Carlos I (a cosmopolitan atmosphere in a luxury setting) Some tips for enjoying Valencian nightlife: Remember that the action starts around midnight and carries on until dawn

Don’t hurry – take your time and visit several venues. Start your night at a free-access club. Don’t leave without trying “Agua de Valencia” Greet the dawn in an international setting . A hearty breakfast will help you to replenish your energies before retiring to rest.
