Some of my friends were having the same experience of being robbed in the US. But at that time they didn’t report it to the police. I saw news that saying that Asian immigrants are likely to be robbed because they tend not to report crimes. Then when I had my thesis class, instructors asked us to bring some problems that we could solve using our graphic design skills. I brought this up and my instructors thought this could work. I started to do more research about this topic and found more information and news about this issue. That was my first insight. I explored more new ideas from the first insight, and I had enough information to help me get to the next level.

PROBLEMS
Asian immigrants’ English ability may not be good enough, so the language barrier stops them from repor ting the crimes. Also, some of them are holding a green card, working visa, or student visa. They are afraid of getting in trouble by repor ting crimes and losing their status. As I obser ved more, I found out this happened especially among Chinese speaking immigrants. Because of their cultural background, it’s hard for them to seek help.

I star ted researching af ter decided the topic. I read a lot of ar ticles, news, blogs, and books, and gathered all the information together. Then I found fifteen insights from this topic. I pulled out three the most impor tant insight s and star ted developing strategies and deliverables for those insights.

SURVEY
During my research, I did a sur vey to prove my direction was right and my concept was working. I used the Sur vey Monkey ser vice to create the sur vey, and sent the link via e-mail and Facebook to let my friends and people that I didn’t know fill out the sur vey. The results were gathered from random samples through Sur vey Monkey. 31 people took my survey and 75% of them were Asian. The results showed that those insights I had were correct. There were a lot of factors to stop Asians from reporting crimes.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience is mainly age 25 and up Asian immigrants who are strongly influenced by their own culture. They grow up outside of America, and English is not their native language. They immigrate to the U.S. when they are adults. They speak their native language at home, watch their countr y’s’ T V programs, and hang out mostly with people who speak the same language. They are dependent on their family members who can speak English well. When they go out, they need others to translate for them. They can only have really basic conversations with people who speak English. They speak English only when they go out alone.

INTERVIEWS
In the beginning of my research, I conducted inter views with people of different nationalities: people from Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, China and America, who had different culture backgrounds. The results showed that Chinese speaking people were more likely not to repor t crimes. These results gave me a clear direction to go, and let me understand much more about this issue. I learned a lot from those inter views and had a vision of this topic.

I used yellow, red, and black color palettes because the combination of those colors give people caution feeling. I used a lot of yellow because yellow gives energetic feeling to people. I don’t want to use dark color palettes because crime is a serious topic and my goal is letting people to be fearless to report crimes.

ICON EXPLORATION
I want my icons to look friendly but also have a serious feeling. At the beginning, I used ver y bold and round corner on my icons. Round corners did look friendly, but it was a bit too rounded, so it inter fered with the serious feeling. Also, the different stroke points prevented the icons from looking like a system. So I reduced the round corner’s radius, so they could look friendly, but also serious at the same time. I then kept the same stroke point on ever ything, so everything looked consistent. After I decided the visual style of the icon set, I started drawing the rest of the icons. Once the style was decided, it was much easier to do the rest, and ever ything kept the same feeling.

I chose to do usability testing for my user testing. Usability testing is used to obser ve users’ experience on how they are using the inter face, and help people to identity which par ts of the inter face are not functioning well. The reason for me to choose usability testing is because my completed deliverable is website, and I’m also doing App design this semester. Usability testing will help me to find out what are not working on the website and App. Because different people may have different knowledge and experiences for inter face using; it’s ver y common to have design bias. So it’s good for me to obser ve how users are using website and App, then fix the problems as soon as possible. I did the user testing with people in different ages, and found out elderly were having more trouble on using App. Also the text size was too small for them. Based on the feedback they gave me, I made a lot of changes to suit their needs. I learned different way on designing things.

This booklet has both Chinese and simple English instructions to teach people how to report crimes. It also has some useful organizations’ information to let people know where to find help if something happens. All the information is shown in Chinese and English with icons, so it is easier for people to understand better at a glance. The size of the type is big enough for the elderly to read. The booklet is 4x5, so it can easily fit in the pocket for the elderly to carry around.
