VALGA
VALGA COUNTY Situated on the shore of the Baltic Sea, Estonia neighbours Russia, Finland and Latvia. Estonians have populated this area for the last 6000 years, which makes them one of the eldest extant nations in Europe. In terms of cultural and terrain-related differences, Estonia divides into four regions: Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Estonia. Some of the bigger cities, the limestone coast with its beautiful waterfalls, as well as a few underground rivers are located in Northern Estonia. Western Estonia harbours romantic Scandinavianstyle beaches and islands. Eastern and Southern Estonia are connected by the old-time Russian culture and one of the largest European lakes, Lake Peipus. The Estonian South is one of the most highest, as well as the prettiest locales, with pristine, untouched nature, a rich historical and cultural heritage, and authentic, chucklesome people respectful of integrity, simplicity and the sense of humour.
Location.
Valga County, also known as Valga maakond or Valgamaa, lies along the line of the Estonian-Latvian border. In the olden times of the rule of Livonia most of the county belonged to Latvia, thus the central town of the back-then province is now divided between the two countries — one half belonging to Estonia and the other to Latvia. Valgamaa is home to both a well-preserved culture of old communities, as well as things new and innovative. Estonia’s youngest county with the smallest surface area is rich in lakes, well-preserved castles and picturesque landscapes, rife with forests and winding rivers, small hamlets and towns nestled between woods and domed hills, where every patch of land has a story to tell.
Estonia: political data, conditions for a visa.
Estonia is a republic belonging to the European Union and a member state of NATO. Since December 21, 2007, Estonia is part of the Schengen Area. Detailed visa requirements can be found at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website www.vm.ee. Citizens of the member states of EU and EAA, as well as owners of a permit of residence issued by a full member state of the unified Schengen Area need no visa to visit Estonia. The Schengen Visa, validating travel to Estonia, can be applied for at the consular services of the Republic of Estonia. Should the applicant wish to visit only Estonia, the visa application should be presented to Estonia’s foreign service. If the applicant’s country of origin has no foreign mission of either Estonia or a country representing Estonia, they must address the nearest consular service of the Republic of Estonia. If the applicant wishes to visit several Schengen countries (including Estonia), they should apply for a visa at the consular service of the country the applicant has picked as the country of destination. In order to decide which of the countries to be travelled to is the main destination country, the applicant must know which Schengen country they are going to be staying in the longest. Should the applicant intend to visit several Schengen countries, yet have not decided their country of destination or wish to stay an equal number of days in each of the coun-
3
tries to be visited, they will have to apply for the visa at the consular service of the country via which they are to enter the Schengen Area. The conditions for a Schengen visa and the entrance to the Schengen Area are only applicable in case of visits less than 90 days in length. For lengthier stays, either a long-stay visa http://www.vm.ee/?q=en/node/9232 or a permit of stay (regarding of which detailed information can be acquired from the Police and Border Guard Board http://www.politsei.ee/en/teenused/residence-permit has to be applied for. Custom regulations and a list of goods eligible to be transported across borders can be found at the homepage of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board http://www.emta.ee/?lang=en.
Religion.
Estonia has no state religion and enjoys religious freedom. The best-represented congregations include the Lutherans, the Russian Orthodox and the Catholic Church. A number of old churches remain, and many old traditions are still held in esteem.
Weather. Changeable and capricious — daily temperatures in the summer can vary from +35 degrees
centigrade under a scorching sun to below +19 degrees in interminate rain; winter snows can be as thick as two meters and as shallow as two centimetres, with daily temperatures ranging from 0 to -30 degrees centigrade. July and August are the warmest, January and February the coldest months.
Currency and modes of payment. Currency: since January1st, 2010, the
valid currency in Estonia is the euro (EUR). Credit cards: Visa and Master Card are accepted at most major food provision and accommodation establishments and stores. When travelling in rural regions, it should be kept in mind that most ATMs are situated in towns, and card payments are often impossible at small country shops and recreation farms. Foreign currencies can be exchanged in banks or currency exchange establishments in Valga, Otepää and Tõrva. Value for money: an average lunch in a pub costs around 3–5 euros, a three-course restaurant meal 10–17 euros, a half-litre glass of beer 2–3 euros. Leaving a 10%-tip as a compliment for enjoyable service is considered normal in Estonia.
Arrival by plane. The major international airports are situated in Tartu (90 km from Valga), Riga (155 km from Valga) and Tallinn (250 km from Valga). Tartu Airport has regular flights to and from both Riga and Stockholm, while Tallinn and Riga Airports connect to more than 30 and more than 80 destinations, respectively.
4
Arrival by boat. Tallinn Harbour is connected with Helsinki and Stockholm via regular boat service. Private yachts can be harboured at Pärnu yacht port (145 km from Valga).
Arrival by train.
Trains run regularly between Valga and Riga, Valga and Tartu, and Valga and Tallinn. Detailed schedules can be found at http://www.edel.ee and http://www.ldz.lv. Hopefully the train line of Valga–Pskov–Saint Petersburg will be restored after the completion of the Koidula checkpoint.
Arrival by bus. Regular international bus lines connect Estonia to Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ger-
many, Ukraine and Russia. Information about intra-Estonian bus connections can be found at http://www.peatus. ee/#route_search/eng. As a rule, connections between towns are very good, and local bus lines are optimal for travelling within rural areas.
Arrival by car.
Motorcars can always be used as a personal mode of transport; cars can be rented locally of from neighbouring countries. In Riga, the price for a week’s use of a car from a rental company is about 140 euros, in Tallinn 180 euros. A litre of gas costs between 1–2 euros; it is usually considered safe to leave a car outdoors for the night. Maps of the Baltic region and Estonia are available at tourist information centres, on the internet and at Google Maps; GPS devices are generally trustworthy.
Arrival by bicycle.
Estonia is just the right size for the bicycle trekking enthusiast. EuroVelo, EstoVelo and Tour de LatEst routes are well-marked. In the Valga County, as well as the rest of the Estonian South, bike tour routes are furnished with information stands, rest stops and bike stands, and usually include enough services needful for a traveller by bike.
The internet. Almost 70% of Estonians own a computer and use the internet. It may well be true
that most Estonians can no longer envision a life without a web connection, and consider the loss of web connectivity a greater harm than a power-failure. Internet connections are available in towns and in the countryside, even in deep woods, whereas public internet outlets and WiFi areas are ample. Portable web solutions, recommended for those travelling mostly in rural regions, are available from all mobile service providers.
5
Post offices.
Post offices are usually open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A stamp for a postcard from Estonia to Eastern Europe usually costs less than a euro. A letter will arrive in 2–3 days, or in a week to the more distant destinations.
Phone services. When phoning to Estonia, one has to dial the Estonian code of +372, followed
by the phone number. Nearly all Estonians use private mobile phones, which has made the street phone booths quite obsolete. Mobile phone operators like Elisa, EMT and Tele 2 have roaming contracts with most of the more important foreign providers; a locally acquired cell phone may be an efficient and affordable solution.
Interesting facts · With its collection of a variety of cultural highlights, Estonia is known as the Land of a Thousand Mansions. Two among the most beautiful of these, those of Sangaste and Taagepera, are located in Valga County. · Estonia has been a popular vacation destination for a plethora of historically important figures of art and the culture. For a short while, Valga was home to the beloved of the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, Anna Kern, to whom the influential genius dedicated the famous lines: “This wondrous moment I recall…” (“Я помню чудное мгновенье: Передо мной явилась ты…) · Michael Barclay de Tolly, the Russian commander and military secretary, a worthy adversary to Napoleon himself, was one of the more influential military commanders of 18th–19th century, yet his heart belonged in Jõgeviste in Estonia. The family sarcophagi still lie at the mausoleum there. · The first ever monument to the poet Friedrich Schiller was erected in 1805 in Valga County on the castle-hill of Helme, in the park of the former manor of Helme. · Otepää was the training centre for the Soviet winter Olympics team, visited by such legends of the winter sports as Prokurorov, Smirnov, Smetanina, Kulakova, Tikhonova, Nageykina, a.o. Several of their autographs still remain on the walls of the Herman Pub. Today the small town of Otepää is a home to six Olympic winners and a training ground for a number of the best athletes from around the world. · These days falling meteorites, although rare, are no longer considered major news. In 1855, a meteorite fell in Iigaste, Valga County, later to be identified by scientists as a tektite originating from the Earth’s Moon. · Whereas pictures on cave walls are the only remnants of mammoths in most of the rest of Europe, in the end of the 20th century Valga County was one of the regions in Estonia where parts of mammoth skeletons, as well as bone fragments from primordial bison and hairy rhinoceroses were discovered, some of which are also on display in the Valga museum. · Otepää was mentioned already in the year 1116 in the Chronicle of Novgorod as a hill fort on top of a mountain in the shape of a bear’s head. The first archaeological digs on the Otepää town hill were carried out in 1895 by the Moscow archaeologist Sergei Bogojavlensky.

· While deliberate mummification originates in ancient Egypt, the naturally mummified bodies of seven adults and two infants — a former manor-owner’s family — were recently discovered in Hargla, Valga County. · The Manor of Sangaste was in its time called the best in the Russian Empire. The last Earl of Sangaste, Fr. G. M. von Berg, studied sciences on a level comparable to that of universities. The Sangaste variety of rye, bred by von Berg, won several prizes at ersthwhile world fairs, and is the oldest variety of rye in the world still actively grown. A progenitor of that variety allegedly comprises a part of the well-known Canadian Gold whiskey. The main complex of the Sangaste manor is built to the impression of the Windsor Castle. · The penultimate lord of the estate of Sangaste, the so-called Earl of Rye, F. W. R. Berg, once Russia’s general adjutant, was also a member of the Senate Riiginõukogu, a general field marshal, as well as the general governor of Finland in 1861 and viceroy of Poland in 1863–1874. Unperturbed by politics, he dedicated himself to the betterment of Finnish economy, incidentally launching the construction of the Helsinki-Hämeenlinna train route, as well as the building of three churches in Helsinki — the Roman-Catholic church in Kaivopuisto, the Greco-Roman church in Eteläsatama, and the German church in Unionkatu. For his services in the governing of Finland, Berg received nobility from the Grand Duchy of Finland. · Probably the most noteworthy contribution to science by the famous astronomer F. G. W. Struwe, the astronomic-trigonometric dimensioning of the meridian arc, was initiated in Estonia. Alas, the only remnant of the triangulation tower on the hill of Harimäe in Valga County is the stone foundation.

VALGA AREA (VALGA, ÕRU, TAHEVA, KARULA)
THE TWIN TOWN OF VALGA-VALKA On the borderline between two states there is a town called Valga by Estonians and Valka - by Latvians. In old Livonia Valga was developing as a unitary town. With establishment of the Estonian and Latvian Republics the status of the town became a problem. The border dispute was solved by the English colonel Tallents in 1920, who, as the story tells, had let himself be entertained one week by Estonians and another by Latvians, had after that given up and divided the town in half on the map - the Estonias to one side and the Latvians - to another. That’s why the borderline runs along the streets straight through the centre of the town.

The Estonian-Latvian borderline. Jaani Church the only church of oval ground plan in Estonia. In the midday and midnight the bell in the church tower tolls in the honour of soldiers fallen in the Estonian War of Liberation. On the church wall there is the memorial plaque to the Nordic Sons – Finnish volunteers fallen in the Estonian Liberation War. The church square is surrounded by wooden buildings with classicistic features of environmental value from 19th century and shops of one-time merchants. The Town Hall of Valga is from the year of 1865. This single-storey house with high half-hipped roof, skylights and pinnacles is one of the most distinguished examples of historicist wooden architecture in Estonia. Throughout the times the Town Hall as the seat of authorities has been decorated with the coat of arms of the town. The most significant resolutions for the town are passed in this building also in our time. The older part of Villa Zencker had been designed for the family of the bailiff of the Kaagjärve Manor, hence its likeness to the main building of the manor. Later on the building has subsequently had exceedingly miscellaneous inhabitants – a lawyer, a girls’ school, criminal police, officers’ club, headquarters of the German Army, an orphanage, house of pioneers and at present, after renovation, the house accommodates Valga Central Library. The travellers come to the sculpture of Nipernaadi to ask for luck for their journeys. The hero of Estonian literature is the symbol of a carefree and jolly traveller who could serve his fantasies so truthfully that no one ever doubted about truthfulness of his fables. The Museum of Valga is located in the former Säde clubhouse completed at the beginning of 20th century according to the design of the best known architect of that time, G. Hellat. With its Art Nouveau frontage the building deserves calling special attention in the entire Estonian architectural heritage. On the second floor of the Museum in the one-time theatre hall with its excellent acoustics there is a permanent exposition reflecting natural history, history and cultural history of the town of Valga through scenes of everyday life. The exposition is supplemented by wax figures and itinerant exhibitions. The gallery is situated on the first floor.

The Apostolic Orthodox Eastern St. Isidor Cathedral. The church of historicist style with five-dome belfry and cruciform ground plan was built in the 19th century according to design by architect V. J. Lunski. This Old Russian style building with abundancy of detail and high qualification of construction is a sacral building demonstrating skills and efficiency of the builders of Valga. Locomotive-monument was erected in 1998 to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Pihkva–Valga–Riia train connection. Locomotive SU 251-98 was constructed in the plant of Sormovo in 1949. The opening of train connection brought about a tempestuous development of Valga and railwaymen and railway became a significant part of the town culture. By the end of the 19th century the station of Valga had already developed into an important transit junction drawing tradesmen as well as enterprisers to Valga. The number of inhabitants also showed a rapid growth. The town blossomed and developed. 125 000 train tickets were sold per year and about some twenty train lines passed through the town daily. In 1936 the fastest train in the Baltic countries was so called Baltic express on Tallinn-Valga-Riia line with at a speed of 62.7 km/h. From the footbridge near the station one has a panoramic view to living and working area of former railway workers. Roman Catholic Church of Holy Spirit was completed at the beginning of 20th century but without the tower as the tsarist government gave no licence for its building. According to tradition the tower of a catholic church could never be higher than that of the Orthodox Church. The construction took place on the initiative of Prelate Affanasowicz with the active participation of Lithuanian and Polish catholic railway workers. The displays of the permanent exposition of patriotic education or in everyday talk – displays of the Military Museum - consist of a permanent exposition in the museum building and in the yard of the theme park. There one can visit the cabin of the “forest brother”, climb in the border guard helicopter, test one’s strength on an obstacle course and have picnic. The recreational area of the Pedeli river one can find sports- and playgrounds, light traffic roads, swimming and sunbathing spots, hiking trails. Villa Morel. A lovely asymmetric house with wrought iron grating is eye-catching already from far away. After Mr. Morel’s death the building was transferred to the ownership of the Republic of Estonia by the testament of the deceased. The building was formerly an orphanage, at present it houses the Youth Centre of Valga. The memorial to Alfred Neuland memorises the former weightlifter, the first Olympic champion of Estonian nationality. Memorial plaque to Stefan Batory. The Polish king Stefan Batory attributed town bylaws to Valga June 11, 1584. The memorial plaque on the alley in Kesk Street was completed in cooperation of Polish and Hungarian Embassies in 2002. Pudrumäe viewing platform. Pudrumägi has received its name from Putra farm erected by a tenant of an estate in 1875. From the platform one has a lovely view over the town. Evangelical Lutheran Curch of Lugazi. The basilica-type church is of modest appearance as it was intended for peasantry. From the bell tower there is an excellent view to Valga-Valka.

18. Local History Museum of Valka. The building was constructed for the Livonian Seminary of parish teachers. The headmaster of the seminary was Janis Cimze. Many well-known public figures from Estonia and Latvia, as Karlis Baumanis, Carl Robert Jakobson, Aleksander Kunileid, Aleksander Lätte and many others have obtained their education under his supervision. 19. The monument to Paju battle is to the memory of the most famous of battles in the course of Estonian Liberation War. The battle decided the falling of Valga junction and the town into the hands of Estonian-Finnish forces. The attack to the estate was led by Julius Kuperjanov who was seriously wounded in the course of the battle. 20. Korva waterside meadow and the Emajõgi. The waterside meadow by the Väike Emajõgi covers about 5 square kilometres, more than a half of which are often under water during spring floods. It is a favourite stopping place for flocks of birds in springs. A gravel road is spreading out through the territory making bird watching very simple and convenient – the lazier may do it through the car window altogether. The best time for visiting is in April when hundreds of different species of ducks, pochards and thousands of geese, less swans and mergansers stop here during their migration. Pintail-, shoveller-, teal- and wigeon ducks, dufted ducks and red-headed pochards, white-fronted- and bean geese are more numerously represented. The end of April or beginning of May is the time to watch the arrival of woodcocks, and then one can see ruffs, redshanks and wood sandpipers and greenshanks. Of rarer species jacksnipe (Lymnocryptes minimus), great snipe (Gallinago media), barred warbler (Sylvia nisoria) have been heard and seen. Among the birds of prey greater and lesser spotted eagle and northern goshawk come to feed on the meadow. The area is not yet quite well acquainted among the birdwatchers and therefore should be full of discovering pleasures.

KARULA-TAHEVA SIDE Karula and Taheva side is the part of old Võrumaa, notable with diversity of its nature and a long-time historical and cultural background. Here centuries-old farmhouses and old traditions and legends passed down by word of mouth have been kept. In some areas Võru dialect is spoken, the old underground burials, sacrificial stones, customs and practices have not been forgotten. Sustainable views on life and organic farming is natural mode of everyday existence and held in respect. Karula Natural Park is the place for preserving characteristic to this area nature, introduction of sustainable mode of life and revival of rural culture. Koiva wooded meadow in the nature reserve of Taheva is rich in rare species, here have also taken place the shooting of the cinematographic picture “The Last Relic”. The Koiva River differs from other Estonian rivers in its sand dunes and oaks growing along its banks. Along the banks of the Koiva River and shores of Lake Aheru there are pleasant forest cabins, spots for fishing and picnics.
Tourist attractions: 21. Kaagjärve Manor Complex. The main building or Alamõis is in neo-Renaissance style from the second half of 19th century. At present it is in the function of the schoolhouse. One-time large manor complex comprises also some stylish buildings of brick from the end of 19th century – bailiff’s house, granary with arcade, etc. In 1880s on the bank of the small Kaagjärve stream running out of Rautina lake, about 2.5 km west of the manor estate, a stylish and large in the meaning of that time industrial complex or Mäemõis. A brewery, flour mill, sawmill, wool mill, spinning mill were put into operation. At present those buildings are looking forward to better times. 22. Karula New Church has been reconstructed from an old byre near the ruins of the old church in 1997. It is interesting to note that the foundation of the Karula church and the top of the Urvaste church spire are at the same height. 23. Karula National Park preserves characteristic to Southern Estonia nature and rural culture. The park has an observation tower; hiking trails equipped with information posts and direction signs and lots of camp- and campfire sites. 24. Lake Aheru is one of the richest by its fish population lakes. In Oore rest area on the lake shore there are holiday cottages, campfire sites and landing stages at the disposal of holiday makers. 25. Hargla Church was completed in 1821. The altarpiece painted by E. Jacobsi won a gold medal at the contest of altar pieces in London. The owner of Laanemetsa Manor, Russian major-general Gotthard Wilhelm von Wassermann, his wife, mother, sister-in-law’s husband, the owner of Taheva Manor von Riekoff and other members of the family are buried in the Hargla tomb. The bodies have been naturally mummified. 26. The area of Koiva River and wooded meadow. One of Estonian most beautiful flood meadows is Koiva wooded meadow down Koiva River side on the Estonian-Latvian boundary. Predominating species of the forest stand are oaks, limes and aspens, but even a real rarity of the nature – spindle tree. TÕRVA-HELME AREA (TÕRVA, HELME, PÕDRALA, HUMMULI)
22
TÕRVA-HELME
Tõrva-Helme area opens the gates to one-time well-known by its wealthy farmsteads Mulgimaa. This part of the country holds in respect folk culture and amateur activities, national instruments, -songs and -dances. Legends from olden times tell about ancient customs and events. There is no one among Estonian people ignorant of tales about Helme spring with its rejuvenating powers or the ruins of the order castle, slave’s stone and caves and how, according to folk tale, the entire town of Tõrva received its name from the tar making by a workman by name of Tõnis. The garden town and summer resort has two natural lakes – Riiska and Vanamõisa - with beaches in perfect order. The river Õhne flows through the town. Every year the traditional musical event, Tõrva Loits (Incantation of Tõrva) is being organized where among the numbers of the program a special incantation is performed.
Tourist attractions: 27. Hummuli estate and battlefield of the Northern War. In 1914 the rye count of Sangaste, Friedrich von Berg, bought the estate to his younger son. From 1930 there is a school in the manor house. The Northern War took Hummuli for the first time into the great history – here Russians achieved their first victory over the Swedes. July 29, 1702 a battle with a big number of casualties was fought between 18 000-men Russian army and 7000-men Swedish field corps on the fields of Hummuli estate. The Swedes were beaten and had to withdraw. In 2002 a commemorative stone was erected in front of Hummuli manor for the remembrance of this historical event. 28. Koorküla. In Koorküla with its idyllic scenery and a large number of lakes there are big forests for mushrooming and berry picking but the jewel of the area is Valgjärv – a forest lake with transparent light green waters and high steep shores. From the shoal in the middle of the lake the remnants of a unique 1300-1400-year old lake settlement were found. Here, evidently, may have been the fortified residence of a noble withdrawn himself from the ancient Estonian community. Folklore has connected Lake Valgjärv and situated from it in the distance of 200 hundred meters Lake Udsu with sinking of a church and a manor under the ground during the marriage ceremony of a sister and brother. Further from the lake there are caves. They occupy approximately an area of a quarter of a hectare and are situated in layers of sandstone from mid-Devonian and Burtnieki strata. On the ground the cave system is distinguishable by craters with irregular contours in the bottom of which the openings of small underground passageways can be seen. The largest opening is in the slope of primeval valley. 29. Barclay de Tolly’s mausoleum. Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly was a Russian general taking his origin from a Baltic aristocratic family with Scottish roots. He played a crucial role in the battles against Napoleon in 18121814. The mausoleum was built to the memory of her husband by the orders of the widow of Prince Barclay de Tolly in 1823. The classicistic style mausoleum was designed by one of the well-known Russian architects of the time, Apollon Schedrin; the author of the tombstone is the sculptor Vassili Demut-Malinovski. The sarcophagi of Prince Barclay de Tolly and his wife placed in the vault have preserved in their original form until today. 30. Tõrva church-chamber hall has always a pleasant aesthetic concert experience in store for the visitors. Of all events more widely the annual Festival of Nature is known in the course of which various concerts and exhibitions are being arranged. At first the church-chamber hall was the Apostolic Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ’s Birth of Helme-Tõrva (built in 1903-1904). During the pitched battles of World War II in September 1944 the church was badly damaged. As the congregation had no funds for restoration works everything was stopped for years. The town had no concert hall and so it was decided in 1987 to reconstruct the church into chamber hall. The construction works took three years and at the Christmas of 1990 the hall was festively opened.

31. The very first house at the town of Tõrva was the building of the inn at a crossroads of Viljandi, Valga and Tartu. The first information of the building is from 1834. At first the inn was built of wood but in the fire of 1890 it was destroyed and a house of boulders was built on its place. At our time the inn is considered to be the symbol of the town and the most beautiful building in Tõrva. 32. Tantsumägi is located on the south border of the town on the left bank of the Õhne River. In the 19th century at this place there was the park of Patküla manor with its fine bridges, stairs and dancing ground from which the place has got its name. Tantsumägi is as if made for pleasant walks, picnics and skiing. In summers concerts and shows take place on the open-air stage. 33. Ruins of Helme Church and the Local history museum. The church originating from the 13th century and accommodating 2000 people was destroyed in World War II when a shell from a long-range gun fell in the organ. The Local history museum housed in the former parsonage building has the exposition of one-time local cultural-, school- and farming life. 34. Tikste primeval valley on the western boundary of Tõrva is a real wonder. The flood plain is 150–200 metres wide. It begins from under the former parson’s manor of Helme and falls as an added valley into the wider flood plain of the river Õhne. The slopes of the valley are covered partly with spruce forest, here and there with bird-cherry and hazel thicket, there are also grey alders and in places there are fields. There have been two watermills on the Tikste stream, one at parsonage manor and another – near the artificial lake. 35. Helme Slave’s Stone. Behind the Helme cemetery, on the outcrop of Kõrgemäe near Keisripalu stream bank there is a sacrificial stone with two hollows in it. According to the legend an orphan had toiled at Helme Manor receiving for her work only a stale chunk of bread and evil words. One cold and rainy night she came again from the Manor dragging wearily her feet and setting herself to rest on the stone with a sigh:”I wonder that you, bleak stone, took pity on me and offered me a seat. The hearts of people are tougher than boulder and harder than stone.” The eyes of the orphan closed down for ever. In the morning the slaves, hurrying to work, raised the small bundle from the stone and saw the imprints of the sleeper on it. 36. Ruins of Helme order castle. The order castle is located on a small separated by two moats cape. The remnants of the wall and the ground design of the castle suggest that the building originates from the first half of the 14th century. The oldest and most interesting part of Helme castle is considered to be a tower like construction in the central part of the castle. The people tell that on the recommendation of a wise man a girl named Anne was walled up in the order castle. She herself had agreed as returning from harvesting she had no idea what was the real meaning of the artful question of the builders: “Who would like to become the holder of the keys of the castle?” The name of the walled up girl had to be the secret to the enemies, otherwise the protective fog surrounding the castle would disappear together with the magic power. Once the enemies succeeded in seizing the old woman taking water from the spring and being scared to death she disclosed the name of the girl and the castle was destroyed.

37. The rejuvenating sacrificial spring of Helme. In the valley below the castle there runs the sacrificial spring with crystal clear water that is said to be the remedy against seven maladies. In olden times a young lass had washed her face in the spring and dropped her beads in the water. She had never regained her beads; however her face had become wonderfully silken. Hearsay of the magic power of the spring had spread far and beyond. 38. Caves of Helme are located on the high narrow slope of the bank running northward of the ruins of Helme order castle. The main point of interest are two large cave rooms, the first with the diameter of 3.5-6 m (3.5 m in height) and another one with the diameter of 5.5 m and allowing one to stand freely in full height. Helme cave has probably been dug for a retreat before fight for freedom of the ancient times. According to legend the passages had reached a couple of hundred metres away under the road, one even to Viljandi, another – to Pokardi and the third - near the church of Helme. 39. Taagepera Castle and park. The castle, built by the design of the architect Otto Wildau in the years of 1907– 1912, represents partly Art-Nouveau archaic-romantic style, partly the orientation referring to Finnish influence. Until the expropriation in 1919 the castle was in the ownership of the estate proprietor Hugo von Stryk. A freely designed park surrounding the castle is one of the largest and richest in species in Southern Estonia. By now the castle has been renovated as a hotel and is known as the most popular and high quality wedding place. 40. Riidaja manor house, Gertruda’s chapel. Riidaja manor house, completed in 1762, is one of best preserved baroque wooden manor houses in Estonia. Half a kilometer eastward of the manor the burial ground of von Stryks family with built in the second half of the 19th century a brick neoGothic burial chapel. The chapel that stood in ruins for a considerable time has been renovated on the initiative of von Stryk family and was inaugurated in 2001 as a church serving the local area. The manor is surrounded by a lovely park. 41. At Riidaja there is an actively functioning Torupillitalu (Bagpipe farm), where the enthusiasts of bagpipe and national music in general can listen to that instrument and learn to play it. 42. A little farther from Pikasilla on the shores of Võrtsjärv there is an ancient stronghold hill Vooremägi where only some years ago the objects of the Stone Age and the Middle Ages period were found.

OTEPÄÄ AREA (OTEPÄÄ, SANGASTE, PALUPERA, PUKA)
Otepää is the loveliest corner of Southern Estonia, noted for its hilly landscape, beautiful lake Pühajärv and active recreation facilities. Otepää has become known all over the world as a winter sports centre, the spot where big competitions and events are held, and having for their trademark the title of the Winter Capital of Estonia. Situated on one of the highest areas of Estonia, the town of Otepää is the heart of its surrounding tourist region with various tourist activities going on all year round. Owing to rolling country, climatic peculiarities and reliable infrastructure one can enjoy winter pleasures from December till April while from spring to a long and mild autumn the hiking trails through breathtakingly lovely landscape are actively used by walkers and cyclists as well. The rivers and lakes linked to one another afford the pleasures of interesting canoeing and boat trips, and a long air flight between two domes of the rolling landscape towering over the surrounding countryside in Otepää Adventure Park shall put to test one’s courage and offer an unforgettable experience at the same time.
Tourist attractions: 43. Hellenurme Manor complex is located 14 km from Otepää towards Elva on the shores of a lovely artificial lake. A majority of its buildings are not being used at present and stand empty. The Hellenurme Watermill with its merry housemistress houses flour- and groats grinding machinery originating mostly from 1930s. Visitors with advance notification shall be shown the mill in operation and taste fresh warm scone. 44. Lustimägi within the area of Hellenurme Manor Park is a nice lay-by alongside the river Elva with picnic- and campfire sites, toilet, pontoon-bridge and ropeway. 45. Otepää Nature Park represents a 22 430 ha nature reserve of the Otepää Upland covering a big area of the entire Otepää area. A number of hiking trails and cycle lanes take their beginning from Pühajärv. The trails and lanes are marked with information boards introducing local species of plants, birds and animals. 46. Maarja’s Lutheran Church (St. Mary Lutheran Church) is a beautiful Gothic Revival (neogothic) style house of worship. The present church is already the third one at Otepää, the previous two having been on Linnamägi. 47. In the parsonage situated in the parson’s manor (Kirikumõis) the blue, black and white flag of Estonian Students’ Society which became afterwards (1924 and 1992) the official Estonian national flag was consecrated by Jakob Hurt. In the memory of this historical event a room museum for the Estonian National Flag and Jakob Hurt was founded in the parson’s manor. In front of the parsonage building there is a monument to J.Hurt. Jakob Hurt was a public figure of the Estonian National Movement and well known folklorist and linguist with the largest folklore collection in Europe. 48. Winter Church. In some distance nearby the parson’s manor there is a new Winter Church opened on Finland Independence day on December 6, 1992. The official name of the building is the Chapel of Widow and an Orphan. It is dedicated to the widow because in the years of the Soviet regime the widows kept the church alive at the cost of their meagre pension. 49. Linnamägi (Stronghold Hill) and Ruins of Bishop’s Castle. The stronghold of Otepää was one of the strong-

est forts of ancient Estonians in Southern Estonia in 7-8th century. Here the swords of Estonians, Germans as well as Russians have been crossed many a time. First Otepää Stronghold Hill has been mentioned as “a bear’s head or ott’s head shaped hill” (ott – traditional name for bear) in the Chronicle of Novgorod in 1116. Energy Column. The sensitives have discovered positive energy fields in Otepää area. The reasons having called them into existence are still not clear. This phenomenon is supposed to be connected with the fact of numerous primeval trees in the area. In 1992 it was decided to mark the existence of positive energy fields of Notepad with decorative sculpture. Tehvandi Sport Center was opened in 1977 as a preparation centre for the national winter sport Olympic team of the USSR. The complex comprises besides the main building a ski stadium, cross-country skiing tracks, K90 ski-jumping hill, shooting range and roller skiing tracks and jogging paths. From the ski-jump tower a lovely view opens over the neighbourhood. In the sports centre there is a Winter Sport Museum dedicated to the history of Estonian skiing and Otepää as the winter sports centre. In Otepää Adventure park at the Tehvandi Sport Center the tracks of various levels of difficulty on the trees and ravishing air flight from one hill to another are in store for the visitors. Pühajärv is considered to be the most beautiful lake in Estonia. Through times it has been a favourite spot for holidaymakers. There are numerous springs along the lake shores, the best known being Armuallikas (Spring of Love) in Poslovitsa bend. According to folk tradition the spring has got its name from the magic powers of its water: it shall bring true and unfading love when drunk from a silver cup at Midsummer Night. From the southern point of Pühajärv the Väike Emajõgi takes its source. The legend says that the lake originates from the tears of a mother lamenting for her five sons perished in war. The five islands of the lake represent their grave mounds. A visit of His Holiness Dalai Lama XIV, Tendzin Gjats to Pühajärv and consecration of it October 3, 1991 is marked by a wooden sculpture situated on the parkward shore of the lake Pühajärv. The beautiful Pühajärve Manor (Heiligensee in German) near the shores of Lake Pühajärv is famous as the oldest manor in the neighbourhood and the newest and biggest spa centre of our days. About 400-year-old and of 7-metre circuit Pühajärve War Oak has got its name in 1841 when in autumn of the same year the peasants refusing vilenage were punished near the oak. Harimägi, 211.3 metres above sea level according to the latest surveys, is one of the biggest flat-topped hills in the Otepää Upland. Harimägi enjoys a 28-metre wooden observation tower with the height of upper viewing platform of 24 metres. From there distant views open to Otepää hills and the Karula Upland over the valley of the Väike Emajõgi. Sangaste St. Andrease Church is a dear pretty small country church open for visitors during the summer season. Sangaste Castle belonged to well-known rye-breeder Count Berg and is built following the example of the Palace of Windsor. Visitors’ attention is attracted by the castle park with its ponds and rare species of trees, also by reverberations effect in under stair vaulting. The outbuildings of the Manor Complex may be seen in the surroundings of the Castle as well as further away. The location of the Museum of Gustav Wulff-Õis has been one of the most favored places for writers to spend their summer vacations. The poet Gustav Wulff-Õis spent there his elder years.
