5questions for ANNA RUDAK

Many Varsovians might recognize your work on the new stairs at Browary Warszawie. Have you been in the public eye before?

Yes. I have created many visual projects for about ten years as a freelancer now. From time to time, my projects appear in the urban space of Warsaw - murals (e.g. for Converse, Perspektywy Women in Tech), window display projects for the Galilu store.

Can you explain a little about your inspirations?

My main inspiration for creating illustrations is everyday life. I like to look for associations and build atmosphere through the selection of colors and textures. Nature, the female silhouette, and the decorative aspect of design and fashion are probably my favorite themes that I intertwine with each other.

Can you tell us about your process of creating?

In each of my works, there is an element of hand-drawn illustration, and I create textures myself. Even though my illustration is ultimately digital, it consists of many analog elements - ink, paint, pencils. I hope that in the age of AI, our human art will still have an audience, and our imagination and the style and experience built up over the years will always stand the test with class.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I come from Gdańsk, where I completed my studies at the Graphics Department, and I also live here. For several years, I worked in the graphic design profession, and thanks to that, I understood that I must become a freelancer. Since then, I have

been slowly searching for my path, taking on commissions from various industries. The diversity of work that comes to me allows me to develop my skills and encourages me to continually find myself in the creative process - this is the greatest joy for me, to truly combine passion and work and additionally be appreciated for it.

Do you find Warsaw as a city inspiring visually, if so, can you explain a little?

I often visit Warsaw, and I highly value the energy of a big city that has a lot to offer - visually, artistically, and culinarily! :) Warsaw can inspire with its boldness when it comes to creative initiatives, which in the face of such a large city must truly know how to attract the audience. Life by the sea flows with a significantly different, calmer rhythm.

In February, Warsaw Chopin Airport celebrated remarkable achievements, hosting over 1.4 million passengers, marking its best February ever. This figure represents an impressive 12% increase compared to February 2020. Additionally, the airport clinched the top spot in the global punctuality ranking, with a staggering 95.9% on-time departure rate. Łukasz Chaberski, acting President of Polish Airports, attributed this success to efficient management amidst growing demand. Despite a 14% decrease in flight operations compared to 2020, passenger numbers have risen by 7%. Notably, cargo tonnage also surged by 2%. The airport's most popular destinations include London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Frankfurt.

HISTORY

Uprising Ammo Stash Found

During excavation for the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, workers discovered 20 hand grenades and 500 pieces of ammunition from World War II beneath the former Bersohnów and Baumanów Children's Hospital site. Despite the devastation of the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944, the hospital remained standing, eventually serving as a field hospital for the AK "Chrobry" group.

Warsaw Invests PLN 117 Million in Civil Defense Program

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski announced a significant allocation of PLN 117 million towards the "Warsaw Protects" program, focusing on shelters, water and electricity connections, and resident exercises. The initiative aims to enhance readiness for potential threats, with investments in additional water intakes, shelter designation, and a flood protection warehouse. Trzaskowski emphasized collaboration with the government to organize evacuation sites and fortify newly constructed schools. The initiative also includes an annual safety education week featuring exercises like first aid. Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the importance of local governments in civil defense, stressing changes in construction law and joint exercises. The impending Civil Defense Act seeks to define civil protection tasks comprehensively, emphasizing planning, alert systems, and personnel appointments.

In the heart of Warsaw, on the 19th of April each year, thousands of paper daffodils bloom on the streets. These delicate flowers, adorning the lapels and bags of passers-by, hold a profound significance deeply rooted in history. To understand the background of this beautiful initiative, we delve into the poignant narrative of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the legacy of Marek Edelman.

In 1943, amidst the darkness of Nazi occupation, the Warsaw Ghetto became the stage for an

extraordinary act of resistance. Facing imminent deportation to death camps, a small group of insurgents, led by courageous figures like Marek Edelman, rose up in defiance. Armed with little but their resolve for dignity, they fought valiantly for nearly a month, defying the odds in the face of overwhelming Nazi forces. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising stands as a testament to human resilience, marking the first urban rebellion in Nazi-occupied Europe.

Fast forward to modern times, the memory of

this uprising is kept alive through the annual Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Campaign. Spearheaded by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, this initiative aims to spread awareness and commemorate the heroes of the past. The symbolic paper daffodil, designed by the talented Helena Czernek, plays a central role in this endeavor.

Inspired by Marek Edelman's tradition of laying yellow flowers during commemorative ceremonies, the daffodil emerged as a fitting symbol of remembrance. Its vibrant yellow petals symbolize hope and resilience, embodying the spirit of those who fought bravely in the face of oppression. Each year, these paper daffodils serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

But the significance of these flowers extends beyond mere symbolism. Through a comprehensive socio-educational campaign, the initiative aims to engage the community and foster a deeper understanding of history. Volunteers take to the streets, distributing daffodils and educational materials, sparking conversations and fostering connections across generations.

The impact of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Campaign is palpable, with each passing year bringing greater awareness and participation. As the city streets fill with people adorned with paper daffodils, almost resembling the inhabitants of the Ghetto wearing a star of David, a profound sense of solidarity and remembrance permeates the atmosphere. It's a moving sight, reminiscent of the resilience and unity that defined the spirit of the uprising.

THE MONUMENT TO THE HEROES OF THE GHETTO UPRISING

Unveiled on April 19th, 1948, the fifth anniversary of the insurgency, this flagship landmark was erected in close proximity to where the first shots of the rising were fired. Eleven meters tall, the monument was designed by Nathan Rappaport and famously constructed using Swedish labradorite that had originally been earmarked by the architect Albert Speer to form a Nazi victory arch. A relief depicts a defiant Mordechai Anielewicz standing amid men, women and children caught up in the fighting. Today it is the center point of all ceremonies connected to the battle, not to mention numerous other Jewish related events and holidays.

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

THE FIRST MONUMENT TO THE GHETTO UPRISING

The original Uprising memorial made its debut on April 16th, 1946. It’s inscription reads: “To those who fell in the unprecedented and heroic struggle for dignity and freedom for the Jewish people, for a free Poland and for the liberation of mankind.” The circular memorial (close to the corner of Polin) symbolizes a manhole coger and incorporates red sandstone, a material purposefully chosen to symbolize the blood that was spilled.

UMSCHLAGPLATZ MEMORIAL

Built to mimic the form of one of the cattle wagons used to take Jews to their deaths, the memorial at Umschlagplatz marks the assembly point for Jews prior to their deportation to Treblinka. Initially plans were raised to inscribe the names of all those known to have been transported to the death camp on the monument, though with that thought to be in excess of 300,000 people the idea was deemed too unrealistic. Instead, the decision was reached to etch approximately 400 Jewish first names onto the granite walls.

MIŁA 18

Mordechai Anielewicz, the commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, conducted operations from a bunker on Miła 18. All that remains now is a grassy mound and memorial stone lying halfway up ul. Dubois. It’s said that over 100 Jewish fighters lie buried underneath, including Anielewicz who committed suicide on May 8th as the Nazi piped poisonous gas into the bunker. “What’s most important,” wrote Anielewicz in his final letter, “is that the dream of my life has become a reality. I have lived to see Jewish defence in the Ghetto in all its greatest splendor.”

THE KNIEFALL PLAQUE

On December 7th, 1970, the German Chancellor Willy Brandt visited the Monument to the Ghetto where he spontaneously sank to his knees. Images of this moment flashed across the world and his impromptu act is remembered as sowing the seeds for German-Jewish reconciliation. A tablet in the North Western corner of the Ghetto park has been added and the area rechristened Skwer Willego Brandta.

A Powerful Reminder

The final resting place of more than 200,000 people, this cemetery stands as one of the most expansive in Europe.

In Warsaw's Okopowa Street Jewish cemetery, a poignant monument commemorates a vast World War II mass burial site: two pits containing the remains of an estimated 92,000 Jews killed in the Warsaw Ghetto. Unveiled on Holocaust Memorial Day 2022, the new memorial is a somber tribute to the lives lost during this tragic era. Designed by architects Karol Dzik, Maciej Szpalerski, and Krzysztof Matuszewski, the complex replaces an earlier memorial from the 1980s. It features broken stones representing the victims, spread across the exact area of the burial pits. The memorial is enclosed by low steel walls, creating a space that evokes the horrific events of the past.

The Jewish Cemetery on Okopowa 49/51, established in 1806, remains a poignant testament to Warsaw's Jewish heritage. Despite the city's changing landscape, this cemetery stands as a profound remnant of history. Notable figures like Ludwik Zamenhof, the visionary behind Esperanto, and Marek Edelman, a pivotal leader in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, find their eternal rest here. Recent efforts, including a 'glass brick wall' commemorating Ghetto documentation and a government-funded mass grave memorial, underscore the significance of this sacred ground. Yet, its true splendor transcends tangible monuments, encapsulating the enduring spirit of a community persevering through tumultuous times.

Warsaw Insider: 1. You have a great eye for composition. What speaks to me about your photos are the directly overhead shots of the city. They are very graphic and sensitive to key spots of the city. Can you tell me more about this process and how you go about finding the places that look so engaging?

PORTRAIT BY EWELINA LACH

Cezary Warś: The process of creating drone photos begins with the fascination with the structure of the city, which is revealed during the flight. When choosing a location, I am often guided by intuition, but also by experience. I also use satellite photos and oblique aerial photos, which allow me to discover unusual shapes that are invisible from the ground. I must also admit that many of my photos were taken quite accidentally, during exploratory flights, and it is those photos taken in the least expected place and moment that I remember the most.

What have you learned about Warsaw since you started photographing it?

By photographing Warsaw, I learned to appreciate its dynamic character and diversity of architecture. Each district has its own history and unique atmosphere, which makes the city never boring. Warsaw is changing so dynamically that a photo taken today in the same place in a few months will have a completely different character.

How much planning goes into your photos?

Before I go out into the city with the drone, I check the weather conditions, lighting and plan my route to maximize the time spent shooting. Legal as-

pects play a very important role in planning drone photos. Before the flight, I must also carefully check whether the object I want to photograph is not in a prohibited zone where you cannot fly a drone. There are also places that require consent from the managers of a given zone, so you must remember to meet the deadlines for submitting the appropriate documents.

Are there special places in the city you love to photograph?

I try to look for new places all the time, but my favorites are definitely the area around Rondo Daszyńskiego, which has changed beyond recognition in a few years. This is where most of the sky-

scrapers are located, which create the character of this place. I also like to explore lesser-known places that may surprise you with their uniqueness.

What are some things you have learned about making a good photograph and yourself as a photographer?

I learned patience and that sometimes you have to wait for the perfect light or conditions to capture a unique shot. I realize that technology and equipment are important tools, but it is the photographer who decides what will be captured in the photo. Each photo I take is a lesson that allows me to develop my artistic vision and technical precision.

I also love the closeness you capture to the things far away from the person looking up from the street. What makes you select the things you zoom in on?

I try to choose objects that can surprise the recipient. Something that seems well known can be shown in a completely surprising way from a drone's perspective. A good example is the Column of Sigismund III Vasa on Castle Square in Warsaw, which we all see from below. By photographing the sculpture from a drone, I managed to bring out details that surprised my viewers (e.g. the beautiful decoration of the royal cloak, but also the details of the hands).

A SMALL SLICE OF HEAVEN

Breakfast all day, cakes and perfect cocktails, Milk Bar, is the place to feel happy...

If you've been to Elektrownia Powiśle lately and noticed the massive line outside, you might have wondered why people are waiting so patiently to get into a Milk Bar. But, it's not your typical milk bar experience. Once you've finally made it inside and you notice the phrase written on the floor, almost like a finish line, "ŚWIĘTO KIEDY CHCESZ!" (holiday when you want it), you'll understand the excitement. There's hardly a livelier scene on a Saturday afternoon in Warsaw's culinary landscape.

WHAT'S TO EAT

Food-wise, while it's not groundbreaking to find breakfast items available all day, the offerings here are exceptionally enticing. A dish like Hash brown with Pastrami speaks for itself, but when your eyes wander across the menu to BBQ chicken waffles, and then to the intriguing option of porridge with shrimps, you'll find yourself saying, "Why not? Today feels like a holiday." On the sweeter side, staples like French toast, bread pudding, and blueberry pierogi are available. However, since the restaurant is Ukrainian-owned, starting with Syrniki—a fluffy pancake resembling marshmallows—topped with Tres Leches is a great choice. It's so sweet and delicious that it might make you feel like it's your birthday, which incidentally, would be the perfect occasion to celebrate here because the cakes are as delectable as they look. Don't miss out on trying the Kyiv cake and Victoria's Secret to satisfy your cravings for all things pink and made of red velvet.

As for cocktails, having breakfast and cocktails together might seem a bit strange at first, but it's an experience worth having. We sampled a few to mark a special occasion, but the standout favorites were the Lasting Bliss – a concoction of bourbon, brandy, cherry liqueur, and chocolate bitters, which feels like candy for adults, especially with its chocolate spoon garnish topped with a maraschino cherry. The other standout cocktail, Clover Club, is made with gin, Martini Fiero, raspberry puree, lemon juice, and egg white, which when paired with the red velvet cake looks like a scene straight from the Barbie movie.

INTERIORS

Upon entering Milk Bar, there's a lot to take in. From the enticing display of cakes to the bar serving up top-notch cocktails, to a side room where bakers are hard at work, and a VIP room for celebrating special occasions in privacy—the ambiance is sophisticated yet inviting. The design touches, courtesy of the multi-award-winning architectural and design studio YODEZEEN, add to the ambiance. A particularly nice touch is the use of olive trees, which, when combined with the distressed-looking map of Ukraine on the wall, seem to symbolize hope for peace.

In conclusion, we wholeheartedly recommend Milk Bar for a gathering with friends. The staff are exceptionally friendly, and their interactions resemble that of a loving family. Just remember, they don't take reservations, so aim to arrive before the weekend crowds to secure your spot.

Walking into Oma is like stepping into babcia's house for a holiday. The atmosphere is usually filled with people who feel like relatives, all gathered to partake in the celebration of good food. The space is cozy, reminiscent of a warm spring day, with wafts of enticing smells emanating from a bustling kitchen. Having visited a few times, I'm always greeted with a smile—a rarity in restaurants in Warsaw these days—and almost always asked if I have a reservation, given the place's popularity as a go-to destination for comforting, home-cooked meals.

“Walking into Oma is like stepping into babcia's house for a holiday

milk bar and beloved specialties of any babcia: schabowy and zupa pomidorowa. The twist on these classics intrigued me; the schabowy was adorned with a heaping pile of grated Parmesan, while the zupa pomidorowa boasted a generous amount of garlic. After tasting these modified versions, I found it hard to imagine going back to my own babcia's preparations. Additionally, the menu offers an array of enticing desserts. One standout is the knedelki—a round dumpling made of cottage cheese, apples, and orange peel—served

with pear stewed in spicy syrup and crunchy breadcrumbs. Each bite is a delight, almost too good to share. While alcoholic beverages are not available, be sure to try their Kompot—a popular Polish drink—crafted in a way that's sure to win you over.

We sit down with Head Sommelier at Nuta, Mateusz Dobrzykowski to talk about colorful world of Polish wines and culture

Insider: Tell me about the regions Polish wines come from.

Nowadays, leading producers come from the regions of Dolny Śląsk, Zachodniopomorskie, Małopolskie, Podkarpacie, and Lubelskie. When you consider these regions, it is important to remember to focus on the southern part of the country because the vegetation period is the longest there. The warmest region of them all is the general southern part of the country, with its rolling hills and almost microclimate, but it is also important to remember the western and northwestern parts of the country like Lubuskie and Zachodniopomorskie, with the iconic producer Turnau now being the biggest producer with 34 hectares, having a huge area of production. Actually, now the 2nd new upcoming producer, Dwór Charbielin, within 27 hectares.

Why are the better tasting wines from Poland mostly white?

Well, it has to do mostly with the fact that red wines need to come from a more mature vine, and the ones here in Poland are not there yet. We are looking for a sort of perfect gateway for the red wine to improve. We have beautiful wines from the Pinot Noir or Zweigelt grapes, which is a popular variety in Central Europe, but we are seeing stylish Polish Rondo and Regent grapes which almost have a veggie earthy taste that is very familiar among all the sommeliers in Poland when we do blind taste testing. Often we know this varietal because we can taste something of fermented beetroot. It is kind of a thing that is okay, but we always look for something a little bit more advanced in their style, which is the point of reference for the quality. Personally, I see big potential in Cabernet Cortis grape.

Tell us about making a tasting menu with a Michelin star chef?

The idea of Andrea is to smash your palate with an explosion of flavor. Rich and complex experience. So every wine has to have an amplified position. For example, for our borscht soup with caviar and duck broth, it is a challenge to match the main ingredient and the beetroot which is generally not a friend to sommeliers because it is sweet and veggie. Something light red wine, but remember the duck stock with a sort fatness which needs a higher level of alcohol, as well as silky tannins to match. Something not too oaky because it will kill the structure of the dish. And especially Andrea, he brings a lot to our conversation when we discuss pairing wines with his dishes. He is expressive and the wines need to be iconic as well by the label or

the backstory or unusual fragrances.

You were a judge at Wino.pl in Poznan, can you tell us more about it?

The city of Poznan is known for its international fairs and the organizers saw the popularity of Polish wine, so they created the opportunity to invite together a large class of sommeliers, sellers, bloggers from all around Poland to see the different points of view come together to paint a picture of Polish wine culture. It is a really fascinating event where we are tasting different subgroups, red wines, sweet wines, rose wine, and white made from hybrids. Tasting is blind with black foil so that there are no biases.

Is there a best in show?

We judge the wines based on the Robert Parker rating system which gives wines a score between 50 and 100 points. The higher the score, the better the wine. Wines with ratings between 80 and 100 points are considered to be good quality wines worth trying, although, for questions of prestige, wineries tend to only publicize ratings of 90 points and over. One thing to consider is that the ratings change because the vintages change in quality and winemakers are experimenting, but often times for the better.

Who would you keep an eye out for?

If you look in the Lubelskie, you will see Kamil Barczentewicz, a young producer from the new wave, with a precise character and good expression. Two guys: Guillaume Dubois, Jean Thierry Smolis who came from France who are producing the best sparkling wine in Poland.

How do you account for trends?

There are producers making individual series or lines of production like orange wine, petit naturals which are still working and producing carbon dioxide inside and with nice labels. These are perfect for the upcoming consumer or even the business person who wants something more edgy and different.

Would you say there is a wine revolution like there was a craft beer revolution?

People going to wine bars or shops buy wine based on a recommendation and the seller needs to be knowledgeable as well as making a profit and with wine bars in big cities like Warsaw, until the knowledge of the beginning stages of wine is evolved and more informed then it will take some time before it becomes a big thing.

Amidst the controversy surrounding the opening of a new Italian restaurant named Madonna in Warsaw's plac Konstytucji, echoes of dissent and disapproval reverberate through the streets. Inside Madonna, paintings adorn the walls featuring unconventional depictions of religious figures—Virgin Mary bearing the likeness of Rihanna, and Jesus portrayed as Keanu Reeves or Leonardo DiCaprio. A neon-lit vestibule proudly boasts the quote, "Heaven is on the 1st floor - Madonna," adding a provocative twist to the ambiance. Rosaries drape over alcohol bottles, and a confessional doubles as a photo op—a daring design choice that ignites passions and divides opinions.

The restaurant's opening draws both admirers and detractors, with some lauding its audacious concept while others decry it as offensive and sacrilegious. Protest prayers and petitions calling for a boycott emerge in response, underscoring the deeply ingrained sensitivities surrounding religious symbolism in public spaces.

The saying that any press is good press has helped get Madonna in the public eye. We plan to revisit soon to just see how heavenly their pizza, pasta and cocktails really are.

Krzysztof Klimek's realist paintings and Henryk Lula's exquisite ceramics captivate and inspire

Krzysztof Klimek. Now I prefer views on display until May 26

"Everything at a distance turns into poetry: distant mountains, distant people, distant events; all become Romantic." With these words, the German poet Novalis anticipated the appeal of one of the richest motifs in visual arts: the open window. From the distant vistas admired by the likes of Matisse, Bonnard, and Caillebotte to the introspective musings of Caspar David Friedrich, artists have long drawn inspiration from the scenes framed by their windows.

Krzysztof Klimek's exhibition "Now I Prefer the Views" at Zachęta showcases this motif in a striking and compelling way. With nearly 60 works on display, the collection offers a narrative of Klimek's evolution through realism that began in 2004. From abstract compositions to vividly realistic depictions of everyday views, often through his own window or what seems like a window of a parked car, they are compositionally reminiscent of photographs taken with a long focal length, causing the images to be flattened and scrutinized compositionally.

A few of the paintings have a more conceptual motif, like a series which depicts the passing of time in constructing a building outside the window of the artist's friend. Another is a triptych panoramic, which takes on an entirely different meaning when you look at the title card and realize it is a view from Christ the King Statue,

Świebodzin. This reminds me of the joke about the best view of the Palace of Culture and Science: the view looking out.

The exhibition also presents Krzysztof Klimek's photographs created in the 1980s and 1990s, chronologically preceding the

period of painterly realism. It is these that are truly a wonderful surprise, as they are charming, beautiful, and candid views of Poland at a time when not many street photographers captured it. I hope to see an exhibition of more of photos in the future.

Ceramics. The Art Of Matter on display until May 19

"The creative process of ceramics differs from that of painting or sculpture," notes Henryk Lula, emphasizing the role of imagination in shaping its outcome. The other exhibition at Zachęta showcases a wide array of works by Henryk Lula, an artist, teacher, and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Featuring over 100 objects, it offers the most comprehensive presentation to date of Lula's achievements. Active from the 1950s to the present, Lula's creations revolve around ceramics, emphasizing the theme of matter, which aligns with his theoretical reflections on art's role. The exhibition delves into the evolution of modern ceramic tradition in Poland, transcending the boundaries of applied art or design since the 1960s.

Lula's handmade objects, ranging from shells to bottles, platters, and jugs, reflect his mastery of physics, thermal, and chemical processes. These diverse forms, whether flat, round, concave, or convex, serve as the foundation for his exploration of color and texture through glazing and firing techniques. Original glazes, meticulously crafted to complement each form, unite to form cohesive ceramic artworks. Through sets of harmonious or contrasting forms, the exhibition highlights the complexities and nuances of ceramic shaping, governed by workshop expertise and artistic finesse.

IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE SHOW GO RIGHT!

The Insider had the privilege of meeting with the dynamic duo responsible for designing some of Warsaw’s most exciting museum exhibitions.

Anna and Kaja of Onto Studio share a remarkable story of how they became partners. Initially, they were strangers before fate brought them together

at the Copernicus Centre workshop for design ideas, where they were selected from a pool of applicants. Their collaboration began with a project utilizing the camera obscure technique on photosensitive t-shirts, aimed

at vacationers. Although the project garnered praise from the Copernicus Centre, plans for its development were shelved. However, the workshop yielded a more significant outcome –their enduring friendship. Their shared passion for design led them to create an interactive freestanding wall at the Bauhaus in Germany, influenced by Oskar Schlemmer's stellar costume designs. Upon returning to Warsaw, they joined forces to craft notable exhibitions at POLIN, the Royal Castle, and the National Museum, marking the inception of their collaborative journey.

Insider: How do you approach the original design for an exhibition?

Our approach to the design process is highly fluid. For instance, our recent project at The Royal Castle in Warsaw, featuring Jerzy Nowosielski's work, drew inspiration from his church interiors. We integrated elements reflecting his emphasis on symmetry and reverence for icons into our design. Furthermore, we were influenced by the color schemes he employed, establishing visual connections between objects across different rooms. A highlight of this exhibition is the "Ciało" (body) room, where we employed organic forms and vegan leather on the walls, evoking the sensation of touching skin.

How do you ensure inclusivity for visitors of varying ages and abilities?

Inclusivity is a paramount consideration in our design philosophy. With the Jerzy Nowosielski exhibit, accessibility and engagement for all visitors,

including children and those with disabilities, were central. We aim to foster a sense of fun and curiosity in younger visitors, encouraging them to view museums as enjoyable spaces. For older children, we facilitate easier connections with art, such as offering tactile reliefs of renowned paintings, promoting awareness of disabilities among visitors.

How do you balance form versus function?

Functionality is always our primary concern when designing exhibitions. We ensure that each visitor's engagement is sustained throughout the entire exhibit. Currently, we're working on a large-scale installation chronicling Polish history, a challenging endeavor given its dense subject matter. To make it more accessible and engaging, we plan to include visual aids, such as diagrams and timelines, elucidating complex narratives.

How do you stay abreast of trends in exhibitions worldwide?

While we do attend exhibitions globally, our focus lies more on materials, manufacturing techniques, and aesthetic principles, as well as exemplary accessibility practices. We trust our own vision and expertise when designing, drawing inspiration from various sources to create innovative and inclusive experiences.

Did you encounter any hardships starting off?

Anna and Kaja: Our early experiences, particularly with our first exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw, were challenging. Initially, our concept faced criticism from the museum's former director, prompting us to reevaluate and refine our approach. However, with perseverance and collaboration, we overcame these obstacles, realizing that successful exhibitions require cohesive narratives and meticulous planning.

What are the biggest challenges in creating an exhibition?

Apart from addressing accessibility needs within budgetary constraints, navigating bureaucratic procedures and adhering to strict timelines pose significant challenges. Securing approvals, finalizing contracts, and coordinating various elements demand careful attention and resource management. Despite these hurdles, our commitment to creating immersive and informative experiences remains unwavering.

Set predominantly within the park's lush grounds, the drama reflects upon the historical significance of the Officer Cadet School, a pivotal institution for the young military figures who instigated the 1830 independence uprising depicted by Wyspiański.

Marking the 115th anniversary of the writer's passing, "November Night" will come to life in the historic gardens, seamlessly blending with the autumnal ambiance. The organizers highlight the significance of the Łazienki gardens as the ideal backdrop for fully experiencing the richness of Wyspiański's masterpiece,

where the interplay between ancient and divine realms with the earthly landscape resonates most profoundly.

The staging concept revolves around faithfully recreating the scenes described by the author, allowing the audience to traverse the Royal Baths Park gardens and witness the drama unfold in sequence. FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM

The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM

A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and

rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul. Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Unsung Hero of Warsaw's Orphans

Janusz Korczak's closest collaborato who shaped the destiny of countless Jewish children in pre-war Warsaw, yet ended tragically amidst the horrors of the Holocaust.

Stefania Wilczyńska, born into affluence to Julian (Izaak) Wilczyński and Salomea née Walfisz, emerged from the shadows of history into the light of recognition. Educated in Warsaw and abroad, she embarked on a career dedicated to the welfare of Jewish children. In 1909, she commenced her journey at a shelter for Jewish children in Warsaw, mark-

ing the genesis of her lifelong commitment. It was there that she crossed paths with Janusz Korczak, igniting a partnership that would define her legacy.

Their collaboration flourished when they assumed leadership roles at the newly established Home for Jewish children on Krochmalna Street in 1912. For over three decades, their shared ethos and innovative pedagogical methods sculpted a nurturing environment. Wilczyńska's ingenuity introduced the duty system, a cornerstone of the Home's operation.

Wilczyńska's significance transcended mere administrative duties. Ida Merżan, a witness to her dedication, acknowledged Wilczyńska's indispensable role in sustaining the Orphan Home, enabling Korczak's prolific literary and pedagogical pursuits.

Despite her pivotal contributions, Wilczyńska's story intersected with tragedy. In August 1942, she, alongside the children and fellow educators, was forcibly transported to the Treblinka II death camp from the Umschlagplatz. A symbolic tribute adorns her parents' grave at the Jewish cemetery on Okopowa Street, commemorating her enduring legacy.
