Nationalist March Blocked

Warsaw City Hall denies permission for the controversial Independence March, citing conflicting applications and ongoing investigations into previous events.

Warsaw City Hall has denied the Independence March Association’s request to hold their annual nationalist march in the city center. The group submitted multiple conflicting applications, causing confusion over the event’s true schedule. The march, set for November 11, has sparked controversy due to its association with nationalist groups. The refusal comes amid investigations into previous events, including allegations of criminal threats and offensive slogans. The association plans to appeal, claiming the decision undermines patriotic celebrations.

Street Art Stir

A new mural of writer Marek Hłasko near Wilson Square has stirred debate in Żoliborz, with some residents unhappy about its location and lack of public input. City hall also raised concerns about it clashing with the district’s historic vibe. Designed by Bartosz Podlewski, the mural marks Hłasko’s 90th birthday. Empik, a project partner, has created a special display of Hłasko’s works in their nearby store. The initiative was led by the Marek Hłasko Memorial Foundation to celebrate his legacy.

Czesław Niemen Honored (again)

A vibrant new mural celebrating Polish music icon Czesław Niemen now adorns the wall of Primary School No. 168 in Saska Kępa. Unveiled to mark the school’s 60th anniversary, the mural, designed by Ola Jasionowska, features Niemen’s likeness in bold blue, yellow, and orange. It commemorates his enduring influence on Polish culture, with a quote from his famous song: “… but there are more people of good will,” echoing the school’s motto.

Klif’s Demolition Dilemma

Klif Shopping Center, once a bustling hub on Okopowa Street, now faces a controversial future as plans are underway for its potential demolition. AEW Asset Management, Klif's owner, has applied for an environmental decision to replace the mall and Klif Tower with a large housing estate featuring over 1,000 apartments. Despite claims of continued tenant interest, rising land values and nearby competition from Arkadia Mall have left Klif under pressure. The proposed project signals a growing trend of converting commercial spaces into residential developments.

Olive of Ursus Wins Hearts

In the Ursus district’s Niedźwiadek estate, a narrow-leaved olive tree has taken the crown as Warsaw’s Tree of the Year 2024. Beloved by the community for its unique, twisting trunks and sprawling crown, this silver-leafed beauty has been a playground for generations, inspiring stories and memories from residents like Piotr Białek, who fondly recalls balancing on its "snake-like branches" as a child and later introducing them to his own children.

This award, organized by the Warsaw Greenery Board, aims to celebrate and preserve Warsaw’s green heritage by spotlighting exceptional trees. The Ursus olive won over half the votes, triumphing over 12 other contenders like Białołęka’s English oak and Wola’s common beech. On October 13, a commemorative plaque will be unveiled during a guided dendrological walk led by expert Jacek Borowski. This cherished olive isn’t just a tree—it’s a reminder of the importance of green spaces in urban life, creating bonds across generations and supporting the ecosystem.

Plaque located at the intersection of Krakowskie Przedmieście and Karowa, depicting the original pre-war design of the Saxon Axis.

WALK THE LINE

Walking the line between history and modernity as we take a look at the autumn charm of Warsaw’s Saxon Axis

The Saxon Axis is a vital thread in Warsaw’s historical and architectural tapestry. Originally conceived as a grand baroque vision to symbolize Poland's royal aspirations, it stretches from the Vistula River through iconic landmarks like the Presidential Palace, Krakowskie Przedmieście, Saxon Square, and the Saxon Garden. Designed by August II, King of Poland, this ambitious project aimed to rival the opulence of Versailles. Although financial and political hurdles thwarted its full realization, the Saxon Axis remains a cornerstone of Warsaw’s cultural identity, with restoration efforts now gaining momentum.

ORIGINS OF THE SAXON AXIS

August II’s ambitious project kicked off in the early 18th century, guided by architects Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and Johann Christoph Naumann. Between 1713 and 1726, he acquired 28 parcels of land for the Saxon Palace, complete with meticulously designed gardens along a central axis. Sadly, after August II's death in 1733 and subsequent financial woes, the project stagnated. While the Saxon Palace and Garden were completed, plans to demolish the Lubomirski Palace for a grander layout were scrapped.

The devastation continued during World War II, particularly in 1944 when German forces leveled almost all buildings along the Saxon Axis, including the Saxon Palace. In the aftermath, while the Saxon Garden was refurbished and the Lubomirski Palace rebuilt—albeit rotated to fit historical design—the Axis’s heart, the Saxon Palace, remained a ruin.

REVITALIZING THE SAXON AXIS: A MODERN INITIATIVE

In recent years, Warsaw has rekindled plans to reconstruct the Saxon Axis, aiming not just to restore an architectural gem but to reclaim the city’s cultural identity. Central to this initiative is the transformation of Żelazna Brama Square, once a bustling hub that offered direct access to the Saxon Garden through the Iron Gate. The city's modern plans envision reconnecting this square to the garden, reinstating a vital pedestrian pathway.Authorities propose a 13- to 16-meter-wide pedestrian crossing over Marszałkowska Street, linking Żelazna Brama Square to the Saxon Axis. According to Marlena Happach, director of the Office of Architecture and Spatial Planning, this crossing will include traffic lights and a bike lane, enhancing both pedestrian safety and access.

ENVISIONING A REVITALIZED ŻELAZNA BRAMA SQUARE

But there’s more! The plans for Żelazna Brama Square also include replacing the existing car park near the Lubomirski Palace with a green space featuring a French-style geometric garden and a central fountain. This nod to baroque ideals not only adds much-needed greenery but also pays homage to the area’s historical significance.

The city’s efforts have been guided by public consultations, encouraging residents to engage in the development process. Many have called for more green spaces and designs that respect the area's heritage, aligning with the broader New Centre of Warsaw initiative to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

WHY THE SAXON AXIS MATTERS TODAY

The reconstruction of the Saxon Axis is more than just a revival of architecture; it symbolizes Warsaw's resilience and cultural continuity. Rebuilding the Saxon Palace and reconnecting the Axis is a reclamation of the city’s narrative, honoring its royal past while creating functional public spaces for future generations.

In a city where history and modernity collide, the restoration of the Saxon Axis presents a unique opportunity to bridge those worlds. As Warsaw forges ahead, the Saxon Axis stands as not just a relic of history, but a key to the city’s future, fostering a sense of identity and continuity that resonates with all who walk its path.

Soundtrack to Life

Janek Przybyłowski aka Janek z Cukru, shares his passion for vinyl records, exploring their resurgence and what they mean to collectors today.

Vinyl has seen a major resurgence in recent years. What do you think has contributed to its popularity, and how do you see this trend evolving?

Streaming platforms are convenient but also kind of dull. Vinyl, on the other hand, is undeniably cool. And let’s face it, people want to be cool. Even if you can’t hear the difference between digital and analog sound, it’s just

really nice to have some records at home. They look great on the shelf, and people are always curious about them. You can never get bored in an apartment filled with books and vinyl records. I think the popularity of vinyl will continue to grow. It's not a temporary fashion. A better sound medium will not be created because there is no demand for it. So vinyl will be the first choice for

people who want to collect music in a physical format. However, the popularity of CDs will also increase, as younger generations will view them as something completely weird and retro.

As an influencer, can you explain your inspiration for creating your posts?

I just want to promote what I love—both deep cuts and

“...analog records sound incredible, and they come with those beautiful large covers”

classic albums. I spend so much time discovering new music that I think it would be a waste not to share my best finds. And when it comes to classic albums, I want to help people dive deeper into music in general.

How did your passion for vinyl begin? Do you remember your first record, and what made it special?

I’ve always loved music, and at some point, I decided to take my passion to the next level. Vinyl felt like the most natural path—analog records sound incredible, you support artists by buying their records, and they come with those beautiful large covers.

The first record I bought was "Sam’s Suffy" by Belgian pianist Marc Moulin. I didn’t overthink it—I stumbled upon his song “TOHUBOHU” on YouTube, was blown away, and thought, “I need this on vinyl.” I only realized it would be my first record after buying it (I didn’t even own a record player at the time).

What are some of the most underrated or overlooked vinyl records that every music lover should check out?

There are so many! In Poland, for example, not enough people appreciate American folk rock. Albums like "The Band" by The Band or "Déjà Vu" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young are considered classics in the U.S. and Canada, but here in Poland, it’s hard to sell even one copy (and I know what I’m talking about—I

had them in my record shop for two years, and no one asked about them even once. Both are 10/10 albums).

As for universally underappreciated gems, I can’t recommend Jacqueline Taïeb’s self-titled 1967 album enough. It’s a yé-yé style masterpiece.

Album art is such an essential part of the vinyl experience. How important is the visual aspect when you're showcasing records, and do you think it adds to the overall appeal? I absolutely love album covers. I think they are some of the most important art pieces of the 20th and 21st centuries. I can’t imagine "The Dark Side of the Moon" without its iconic prism cover. That album would feel different to me without it, and that applies to all the records I love. A great album cover is half the success. Many times, I’ve given an album a chance just because the cover art caught my eye. I have album covers displayed all over my apartment, and I switch them out frequently. I’m a bit of an album cover freak. Sometimes I even find records with similar designs and place them side by side, like "Someone New" by Helena Deland and "Seriously Deep" by David Axelrod.

How do you foster engagement with your community, and what’s the most rewarding part of interacting with fellow vinyl lovers?

I often ask my community ques-

tions, like, “What are your favorite live albums?” The responses are always amazing. I learn so much from them—there are almost no boring picks. The people who follow my page really know their music, and that makes me incredibly happy and proud.

The most rewarding part is meeting a fan in person, at a concert or a club, and realizing they’re super cool. Recently, I met a guy in a club who told me he had watched almost all of my videos. We talked a lot, and it turned out that not only does he play saxophone in a band, but he was also booked for DJ’ing later that night. I stayed until 3 AM for his set, and it was great. The most rewarding thing is when you realize that you can now become a fan of someone who started out as a fan of yours.

Lastly, as a music lover, what can you tell us about the Warsaw music scene?

The music scene is constantly evolving and taking new forms. Right now, I think it’s better than it’s ever been in my lifetime, largely thanks to people from Ukraine and Belarus. They have brought their amazing cultures to Warsaw and made the city so much more interesting.

GOLDEN HOURS & URBAN HUES

For Łukasz Artur, every street, sunset, and shadow becomes a canvas, showcasing the city's contrasts and beauty through the warm glow of the golden hour and the quiet mystery of Warsaw’s evolving skyline.

Your photos beautifully capture the essence of light, with a clear affection for sunsets. What draws you to this time of day?

Late afternoon, or the "golden hour," is ideal for urban photography. The soft, warm light casts long shadows, transforming buildings, bridges, vehicles, and people into something captivating. The shifting sky, from blue to shades of orange, pink, and eventually navy, frames Warsaw in dramatic hues. This light allows me to capture subjects without overexposure—unless intentional—and play creatively with shadows, creating truly striking images.

Street photography is a big part of your portfolio. What about the streets of Warsaw continues to inspire you?

Street photography captures life in motion—its unpredictability, changing weather, and endless creativity. Warsaw, as my hometown, holds a special place in my heart. It’s a city of contrasts: post-war modernism beside beautiful pre-war tenements, and towering glass skyscrapers. I’m especially drawn to the city’s trams and the eastern Vistula River banks, as well as Warsaw’s manageable size, making it easy to explore. I occasionally take city breaks across

Europe, but I’m always happy to return to Warsaw.

Is there a specific part of Warsaw where you find yourself drawn to shoot again and again?

I grew up in the western part of the city, so I feel comfortable there, though I often cross the Vistula for inspiration. The city center, Powiśle, and Mokotów are particular favorites. These neighborhoods resonate with me, and I frequently revisit them, always looking for new angles. For instance, the Palace of Culture and Science—a Warsaw icon—is something I’ve photographed countless times, but I’m always on the lookout for fresh perspectives. Powiśle, with its Świętokrzyski Bridge, Tamka Street, and nearby parks, also draws me back time and again.

Photography can reflect personal influences. Could you share something personal that shapes your work?

This is tricky to answer, as I’ve never seen myself as an artist—photography is a serious hobby. I view the world through my lens without altering reality, though I may present it creatively. I aim for a calm, positive, and warm tone; negative emotions are rare

in my work. How we portray the world reflects who we are, and my photos lean toward positivity. But I continually push myself to learn and experiment, even outside my comfort zone, to develop my skills further.

Your work seems deeply connected to Warsaw’s mood. How do you capture the city’s energy or stillness?

It often comes down to photographing the same place from different perspectives until I feel I’ve captured its essence. Time of day, weather, and lighting greatly influence the mood. A sunny afternoon has a different energy than a cloudy evening. Warsaw often appears bathed in light in my images, especially at dusk, when city lights and reflections create a vibrant scene. I also love capturing Warsaw from a drone; it offers a fresh perspective, and these shots often resonate with people.

What does your creative process look like? Do you plan meticulously, or do you shoot spontaneously?

Street photography is usually spontaneous for me. I grab my camera and wander through Warsaw,

walking for hours in search of interesting spots or moments. Sometimes, though, I’ll plan if I have a particular shot in mind, choosing lenses, filters, or the right time of day, especially if I’m after the golden or blue hour. When I find an interesting location, I can spend a long time experimenting with angles and settings to get the effect I want. Post-production is often the most time-consuming part—I’ll go through hundreds of photos and edit for hours, sometimes returning to an image after a break to see it with fresh eyes.

How does Warsaw’s evolving landscape influence your photography? Are there any recent changes that have impacted your vision? Warsaw’s evolution creates more opportunities, especially from above with a drone. The skyline is constantly shifting, and new elements—tram routes, renovated streets, modern parks, and architectural projects like the new pedestrian bridge over the Vistula—offer fresh inspiration. There’s so much to explore beyond the main streets and popular buildings; lesser-known neighborhoods and courtyards reveal a side of Warsaw few people see, which keeps me excited to keep exploring.

It’s hard to miss QQ Warsaw on Żurawia, where a steady stream of guests fills the space from morning until night. This bustling eatery combines tradition with a modern twist, reflected in its name and logo. The "QQ" refers to a culinary term in Hokkien that describes the ideal texture of foods—chewy, springy, and bouncy—similar to al dente pasta. This clever play on words sets the tone for what patrons can expect: a focus on texture as much as flavor.

The interior of QQ Warsaw is simple yet inviting, mirroring the balanced flavors of its menu. Highlights include the salty coffee, a refreshing surprise for those seeking a unique caffeine kick, and the matcha latte with an extra shot, perfect for true enthusiasts. For those looking for something heartier, the bulgogi sandwich is a standout, showcasing tender marinated beef enveloped in fresh ingredients and creating a deliciously satisfying meal that transports diners to the heart of Korean cuisine.

What’s fantastic about the owners orchestrating these delicious offerings is how the kitchen operates like a well-oiled machine; just a glance reveals the many moving parts that come together to craft each order.

Tucked behind scaffolding on ul. Górskiego, just beside E. Wedel, Dom Otwarty is the kind of gem you almost don’t want to share. Run by singer Marzena Ugorna, this Polish-Moroccan fusion spot combines the charm of a casual friend’s dinner with an atmosphere that transports you straight to the vibrant streets of Tangier.

MOROCCAN MAGIC, POLISH SOUL

Hidden on ul. Górskiego, this spot shines

Entering feels like stepping backstage; a set of stairs lead you up to a cozy, unpretentious dining room that feels both homey and intimate. The real magic, however, is in the food, where traditional Moroccan flavors meet subtle Polish influences. Start with the Frozen Tomato Burrata – a refreshingly original twist with grated frozen tomato, mint, and pink pepper. The creamy burrata balances perfectly with spicy caramelized

Every bite feels like an invitation to Morocco – warm, vibrant, unforgettable

pumpkin seeds, giving every bite an unexpected pop of flavor.

Another standout is the Goat Roll in Honey – a melt-in-yourmouth goat roulade paired with caramelized peach, pear, and a delicate honey drizzle. The dish is rich yet light, with a mint-coriander sauce that lends a bright, herby finish. And don't miss the Moroccan Potatoes, served with a dollop of sour cream and coriander sauce; it's a humble yet comforting side that echoes the restaurant's down-to-earth appeal.

There’s also an array of Moroccan favorites, from Pastilla (a savory pastry with stewed chicken and almonds) to Tagine with lamb kofta. Polish desserts like blueberry pyzy and spelt apple pie add a comforting, familiar end to the meal.

Dom Otwarty is more than a dining experience; it's an escape. Be warned: after a meal here, you might find yourself dreaming of a ticket to Morocco – or at least your next reservation.

A local bistro serving locals unfussy Polish cuisine that keep them coming back

Po Prostu is the kind of place Warsaw locals love to keep to themselves. Unassuming and straightforward, it’s a Polish bistro that delivers hearty, homemade meals without any fuss. Now with three locations across the city—in Mokotów, Ursynów, and this third spot—it offers a reliable go-to for breakfast, lunch, or just a satisfying pit stop during the day.

The interior, decked out with retro PRL signs and nostalgic black-and-white photos, might initially make you think you’ve stepped into an upgraded milk bar. But despite the throwback decor, Po Prostu is very much a local bistro. Simple and unfussy, it focuses on serving good, honest food. Dishes like seared chicken breast with couscous served in a ramekin and fried onions, alongside Moroccan soup, elevate the experience well beyond what you'd expect from a milk bar, bringing a more refined touch to classic comfort food.

The breakfast menu is international, featuring a variety of styles like English, Swiss, Viennese, and Polish, alongside crowd-pleasers like omelettes and sandwiches. Later in the day, the kitchen rolls out a lineup of comforting Polish staples: pierogi, pork schnitzel with a fried egg, and the ever-popular spaghetti carbonara. Chef Adrian and his team take pride in delivering food that lives up to the restaurant’s name—simple, but satisfying. Po Prostu may not be trendy, but its straightforward approach is exactly what keeps diners coming back for more.

PIZZA PERFECTION

Discover a new pizzeria serving creative pies and delightful small plates.

Kinda hidden away down below in the PRL-era pavilion of Społem WSS Żoliborz, the new pizzeria Żol Pizza i Wino has arrived, injecting fresh energy into the Żoliborz community. Since its debut in August, this eatery offers a delightful fusion of traditional Neapolitan flavors and inventive toppings that promise to please both purists and adventurous eaters alike.

The star of the show, of course, is the pizza. While classics like marinara and burrata deliver the comforting familiarity we crave, it’s the original creations that truly set Żol apart. Picture a pizza adorned with succulent duck, earthy oyster mushrooms, or the hearty combination of shrimp and sausage. Each pie is crafted with care, showcasing the quality of ingredients and a dedication to authentic techniques.

Beyond the pizzas, Żol Pizza i Wino offers a selection of enticing small plates perfect for sharing. Start your meal with the aromatic focaccia infused with rosemary and garlic, or indulge in the creamy burrata drizzled with lemon oil and fresh basil. The marinated roasted peppers, baked to perfection and paired with ricotta and pesto, add a touch of sophistication to the menu. However, it’s important to note that while the name hints at a wine experience, patrons won't find a place to enjoy a glass on-site yet. As the restaurant prepares to expand its offerings, this absence does not overshadow the vibrant dining experience that awaits. In a city rich with pizza options, Żol Pizza i Wino stands out for its commitment to quality and creativity. Whether you're a local or just passing through, this pizzeria is worth a visit for a unique slice of pizza perfection in the heart of Żoliborz.

MANNA’S WARSAW DEBUT

Manna’s highly anticipated Warsaw location brings the beloved flavors from Gdańsk, offering creative vegan dishes in a serene, stylish setting.

At Manna’s Warsaw location, the sandy-toned interior greets you with a subtle nod to its Gdańsk origins. The space feels warm, understated, and effortlessly chic, making it a comfortable spot to settle into for a plant-based meal. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or an unhurried dinner, where you can enjoy plant-based cuisine in a tranquil environment. Natural hues and minimalist design create an ambiance that’s laid-back yet sophisticated—perfect for unwinding over some seriously thoughtful food.

Manna's arrival in Warsaw is a landmark event for all vegan and vegetarian enthusiasts who’ve visited the original Gdańsk location and fallen in love with its plant-based magic. Now, locals and visitors to the capital can experience the same beloved flavors without the journey north. The menu stays true to its Gdańsk roots, offering familiar dishes that are both creative and approachable.

The cauliflower steak, for instance, is a well-executed option. Charred just enough to give it a satisfying bite, it’s served with a rich, flavorful sauce that elevates this humble vegetable. It’s the kind of dish that makes you rethink your relationship with cauliflower—it won’t blow your mind, but it certainly holds its own as a star player on their menu.

The real showstopper, though, is the “duck” with rice. This dish proves that Manna’s chef has some serious tricks

Manna showcases the potential of plantbased cooking in a way that’s approachable and satisfying...

up their sleeve. They’ve managed to transform seitan into something that not only tastes rich and savory but also has a texture reminiscent of real duck—complete with crispy "skin" that’s almost too good to be true. It’s a little bit of wizardry on the plate, and the result is a dish that feels both indulgent and hearty. Paired with perfectly cooked rice and a medley of colorful vegetables, it’s a true standout.

For drinks, the matcha sour is the way to go. It’s light, refreshing, and offers that perfect balance between tart and earthy, with just enough matcha to give it a unique twist. It’s a cocktail that feels as good as it tastes—a satisfying pick-me-up that doesn’t weigh you down.

To finish, the raspberry panna cotta is a must-try, and here’s the kicker: it’s sugar-free. Creamy with a natural tang from the raspberries, this

panna cotta gives you all the indulgence without any of the guilt. It’s the kind of dessert that’s light enough to leave you feeling refreshed, not overly stuffed.

ITALIAN NIGHTS

Poznańska’s newest hotspot serves up Italy on tap.

If Warsaw’s cocktail scene had a new muse, it’d be this buzzing Italian bar on Poznańska, where the Negroni flows straight from the tap. Freshly mixed every day, these bargain-priced Negronis are dangerously good, made to fuel an evening of laughs, Italo-disco beats, and mouth-watering Italian snacks. The place nails the chic Italian vibe, complete with suave bartenders and DJs lounging like characters straight out of a Fellini film.

While it’s easy to get swept up in the energy, there’s one slight hitch: the music volume. Pulsing Italo-disco and chart-topping beats set the perfect mood, but it’s often so loud that casual conversation becomes a challenge. For some, that’s all part of the charm—an immersive experience that feels like stepping into an Italian nightlife fantasy. But for those wanting a bit of chat with their cocktails, it can be a touch too much.

That said, the team here knows how to serve up more than just drinks. Friendly bartenders mix inventive cocktails, including a new one inspired by Italian adult film icon Rocco Siffredi—yes, it’s as bold as it sounds. Add in savory snacks, straight from an Italian grandmother’s recipe book, and you have an ideal spot for a memorable night out. Whether you’re in for a quick Negroni or a full evening, this lively Poznańska bar is worth the visit. Just bring your best party voice!

KOREAN COMFORT

Discover homestyle dishes crafted with care, highlighting the rich flavors and traditions of Korean cuisine

There has been a welcome influx of new Korean restaurants opening in the city, and one of our new favorites stands out for its focus on homestyle cooking rather than street food. Chef Kwon takes great care in crafting each sauce from scratch, ensuring that the flavors are genuinely authentic and free from the ordinary taste of pre-made jars or bottled condiments.

Your meal begins with a delightful fried dumpling filled with tofu, vegetables, and

young onions, perfectly crafted to jumpstart your appetite.

From there, dive into the Jeyuk Pokkeum, a dish featuring spicy fried pork with onions and gochujang paste served alongside fluffy rice. This dish delivers a satisfying kick that will leave you craving more. For those looking for something uniquely comforting, Ttokbokki—rice noodles and panga fish cakes smothered in a spicy sauce—offers a delightful balance of textures and flavors.

Next, try the fried shrimp, perfectly coated in panko,

delivering a satisfying crunch that gives way to succulent seafood. The silky tofu drizzled with balsamic sauce is a revelation, balancing rich flavors with a light touch. However, the true star of the show is the rice served in a hot stone bowl. Its stunning presentation, coupled with the sizzling sound as it arrives at your table, heightens the anticipation. Each grain of rice is infused with flavor and complemented by an assortment of fresh vegetables that add vibrant color to the dish.

Namdemun prides itself on sourcing ingredients directly from Korea, ensuring that every bite is as authentic as it gets. The chefs, passionate about their craft, expertly blend flavors and textures, making each dish a feast for the senses.

Due to limited seating, be sure to make a reservation, and consider trying a delivery option to experience these delightful flavors at home.

The Buzz

Presenting the city’s most talked about venues, join us on a whistle stop tour of the cafes, pubs and cocktail dens and wine bars that you can’t afford to miss…

Usagi No Shima

Księdza Ignacego Jana Skorupki 5 (Śródmieście), IG.com/ usagi.no.shima

This charming café is a serene escape that transports you to a tranquil island, albeit without the bunnies suggested by its name. Upon entering, soft lighting and minimalist decor create a peaceful ambiance. The café features whimsical rabbit motifs, making it a perfect spot for coffee or casual catch-ups. Their standout Matcha Latte boasts a rich flavor and stunning 3D latte foam art of cats, corgis, bunnies, and pandas. Don't miss the Mitarashi Dango, tender rice dumplings drizzled in a sweet soy glaze, or the refreshing strawberry sandwiches. With its delightful menu and warm hospitality, Usagi No Shima is a must-visit.

WINE & DINE

Kontakt

Sandomierska 13

Weaknesses do not exist in Kontakt, and if they do, they have yet to be formally identified by any who visit. Looking glorious in its deep shades of blue, its look is complemented by a 400-strong wine list slanted towards natural, bio-dynamic and organic wines. The five-star experience is aided by wonderful food.

LOCAL WINES

Brać

Zgoda 3 & Sierakowskiego 4A

Resistant as traditionalists may be to the very notion of Polish wine, Brać have made it their mission to showcase its unknown quality. Presenting on-edge sips from niche domestic producers (including collabs with the Funky Fluid craft brewery!), all this is done in a stylish space that feels good to be in. From 2023, this was our favourite wine-related find!

NATURAL WINE

Rascal

Moliera 6

Formerly a canteen for ballet dancers, this address now holds the largest bar in Europe specialising in natural wines – you weren’t expecting that! Entered past a lavish drape, this cool space has a suitably adventurous choice of rebel wines.

BEER GEEKS

Jabeerwocky

Nowogrodzka 12

Good old Jabbers will never let you down. A Warsaw institution, the adventurous choice of beers gives nods to international pioneers, domestic talents as well as

The Buzz

their own house beers. Prewar floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. For something quieter, take your pint next door to their sister bar, Jabeerwocky Junior.

THE HEART OF POLSKI CRAFT

Kufle i Kapsle

Nowogrodzka 25

Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the brick interiors are thick with noise, clamour and the reassuring smells of last year’s party. On colder nights, make your way to the back to discover an intimate space sprinkled with vintage armchairs and wonky old lamps set at a natural tilt. The beers are among the most radical in Warsaw.

CUTTING EDGE CRAFT

Hopito Chmielna

Chmielna 24

Opened last year as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more mature in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own crazy brews.

OLD TOWN PINTS

Same Krafty & Same Krafty Vis-à-vis

Nowomiejska 10

Jammed between the Barbican gateway and the Rynek, Same Krafty’s pair of Old Town drinkeries face opposite each other to offer their own mini-pub crawl. Appearing as raucous and rugged tavern-like bars, the experimental craft beers are a league ahead of the mainstream fizz peddled by

the other nearby bars.

FRIDAY HIT

Grace Drink Bar

Krucza 16/22

Named in honour of Grace Jones, the choice of hero says much about a place that devotes itself to celebrating the glam excess of 80s New York. Rooms include one that’s all bordello style colours and velvety finishes, and another that’s high on plush purple, glass and mirrors. Fuelling the party, are classic cocktails, kamikaze shots and kitschy yesteryear hits.

CREATIVE COCKTAILS

Ave Pegaz

Piłsudskiego 9

Inside a lively interior that doesn’t take itself too seriously (check the ‘ceiling garden’), swivel about to gawk at a mighty collection of corkscrews and drinking implements. In this alchemist’s workshop find yourself enjoying some of the most creative cocktails in Warsaw.

COCKTAIL PORN

VHS

Poznańska 7

The shoebox sized VHS pays tribute to the 80s and 90s and is a model for good times –boasting a flamingo and pictures of Mr T., the toilet says it all. The drinks are among the wackiest in Warsaw, and they’re as fun to drink as they are to photograph.

RETRO HIP

Paloma Inn

Poznańska 21

Inspired by The Jetsons, the moon landings and the atom, Paloma Inn is a groovy blast of lunar lines, pea green colour tones and furnishings and fittings that are retro-fu-

turistic. The experience is compounded by easy listening muzak, 70s menu faves like fondue and mega fun cocktails.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Beirut & Kraken

Poznańska 12

Somewhere, amid all the junk relating to the Lebanese conflict (sandbags, ammo boxes…), you’ll find the spirit of Poznańska contained within this long, skinny bar. As fashionable now as it was when it opened, finish the evening in their connecting venture, the Pirates of the Caribbean-style Kraken. Evenings dissolve into a wild, happy whirl of international voices.

INSIDER CLASSIC

Pardon To Tu

Al. Armii Ludowej 14

Despite the upgrade in surrounds, they’ve retained the leftfield spirit of their old haunt thanks to flexi hours, a commitment to obscure sounds, and a well-spaced interior that references their former venue through its decadent colour scheme and wall of favoured musicians. The air of friendly, unforced cool is unmatched!

FOR THE MUSIC

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Known for his ear for upcoming talent, the owner Michał isn’t averse to taking risks in order to broaden Warsaw’s musical palate. The scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages give a vibe redolent of the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest, whilst inside it’s all creaking floorboards, mismatched furnishings and a clientele sourced from the local Academy of Fine Arts.

REBEL SOUNDS

Chmury / Hydrozagadka 11 Listopada 22

Set in a fleapit courtyard, it’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, but both are spiritually cojoined by a devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

Foton

Wilcza 9A

You know it’s been an epic weekend when you wake up on Monday knowing that Foton was involved. Conversation with strangers is natural after a few of Foton’s cocktails, and these are enjoyed to a cool backdrop made up of fleet of tumbling plants perched on steel-framed irrigational contraptions.

CULT BAR

Gemba Chmielna 21

Adopting a loose-fitting PRL style, interiors include wood-paneled walls decorated with pics of Pope JPII, sporting pennants and framed artworks from the heyday of the Polish School of Poster. Tricked out with retro wallpaper, the perches by the bar are the most sought, but spillover seating can also be found in a winter garden enclosed by green and scarlet drapes – very David Lynch. Drinks include a broad-minded selection of craft beers, house cocktails and shots.

PRE-CLUB DRINKS

Bar Pacyfik

Hoża 61

Based upon the kind of Tijuana dive bar you’d have

happened upon during the Miami Vice era, Pacyfik is all candy floss pink and shades of teal: a raw-looking den that looks purposefully imperfect. Keeping the hip international crowd on the wrong side of drunk are kick-ass cocktails!

LATE NIGHTER

Republica San Escobar Poznańska 7

Lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

ESSENTIAL CHECK-IN

Fabryka Norblina

Żelazna 51/53

Without fail, the big winner of 2023 was Norblin – hell, we even saw Kieran Culkin walking through over summer! In terms of nightlife, winners include the elite MOXO and the craft-minded Uwaga. Packed in the evening, the atmosphere is squared out perfectly by the live music that frequently escapes from the Piano Bar. The Insider fave though remains Piano Bar, a place with fancy cocktails, a 12-foot chandelier and a crowd that errs from late 20s upwards.

STUDENT CARNAGE

Nowy Świat ‘Pavilions’

Nowy Świat 26

For the highest condensation of bars in the capital head to ‘the pavilions’, a collection of ramshackle drinking cabins, shot bars and sheesha lairs inside a tight grid of shadowy back alleys. Adding to the gentle sense of confusion comes the realization that so many bars look the same –accessed through clattery, barred doors, visitors walk into murk and chaos.

LIVE SPORTS

Shamrock Sports Bar

Krucza 51

At long last, Warsaw has the sports bar it deserves. Zapping in football, rugby and suchlike from around the world (but mainly Britain), this Irish-run spot is an offshoot of the atmospheric Shamrock Irish Pub on Zgoda. Though a lot smarter than its sister, the raucous sense of fun has carried over –as has the quality Guinness.

ALT. ENTERTAINMENT

Worek Kości

Bagatela 10

There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and that’s underlined by its collection of 400 replica skulls. Known for its burlesque nights, this passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre also has a busy roster of lectures dedicated to criminal profiling, forensics and serial killers. Oh, and the cocktails are good.

THE PRAGA VIBE

W Oparach W Absurdu

Ząbkowska 6

Craft beers lurk within the fridge, but for the seminal Absurdu experience order a tray of vodka before bulldozing through the crowds that gather to listen to Balkan rock and Afro-Latin bands. Somewhere, hidden deep beneath the creaking antiques and moth-eaten Persian rugs, you might be lucky to find a woodcarved bar.

NORTHERN NIGHTS

Havana

Słowackiego 16/18

Set on the first floor of a PRL era tower, the super cool interior offers up a coherent display of retro posters, luscious plants and light wood trimmings that are respectful of this space’s former life as a 1960s cafe. Perched among hip freelancers and theatre types learning their lines, sip away on trendy bio wines, adventurous lemonades, craft swigs or specialty coffee sourced from local roasters.

CLUB OF THE YEAR

K-Bar Powiśle

Leona Kruczkowskiego

Providing an alternative to the usual Smolna / Luzztro / Jasna 1 scene, the location inside one of the pillars that prop up

Poniatowskiego Bridge lends an ‘in the know’ frisson of adventure to your evening. Small, sweaty, raw and intimate, the industrial-style vibe is offset against oriental lanterns and the occasional Korean flag. Music-wise, and evenings promise everything from Italo-rave to techno trance.

UPMARKET CLUBBING

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Some would say that Sen enjoys its heyday in the summer when the rooftop terrace opens to afford views of the illuminated bridges that span the river. But even outside these months it’s long enjoyed a reputation as Warsaw’s premier super-lux club. High class cocktails and a stringent door policy have helped maintain their name as the principal destination for glam, catwalk excess.

SHOW TIME!

Chaton is where the celebs and top-earners gather to enjoy world class stage performers prance about whilst revelling in the bosom of refined luxury.

DESTINATION COFFEE

Café Pląs

Puławska 113A (Królikarnia)

Set inside the Króliarnia palace, it’s laidback and artsy-cool, something aided by the strategically placed plants, chillout beats and rare-find art books placed reverentially on the shelves. Specialty coffee, bio wines, alternative soft drinks and craft beer make it a highly versatile place to finish in after a brisk autumn walk around the palace grounds.

Dine & Delight

When only the best will do, we’ve cut through the chaff to present a curated choice of Warsaw’s top eateries –from ethnic comfort foods and under-the-radar gems all the way up to the city’s most exclusive dining rooms…

Seoul Oppa ul. Lwowska 9 (Śródmieście), IG.com/seouloppa_kitchen

One surefire way to spot a popular Warsaw restaurant is by the weekend crowds willing to wait for a table. Recently opened Seoul Oppa, near Hala Koszyki, is one such place. Surrounded by favorites like Ganon and Japonki, this spot is perfect for brunch. The wait is worth it, especially for their soft, steamy dumplings. The highlight is the Korean Fried Chicken (KFC), tender and juicy without the usual grease. For heat, try the bulgogi bowl, customizable with gochujang. Don't miss the surprise hit, cheese chicken—an addictive, savory treat. The friendly service makes every visit a delight.

THE MICHELIN STAR

Pl. Trzech Krzyży 10/14

Andrea Camastra’s restaurant is a magical enclave in which time stands still. Mixing his famed scientific techniques with artisanal processes, his tasting menu is expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, as if it were an extension of his own firecracker character. Even the cheeseboard is a mind-bender – on our April visit, jaws hit the floor as this arrived in the liquified form of a pear consommé topped with warm gorgonzola foam. A bold, world-class adventure, no other restaurant offers such a ride – a second Michelin star seems guaranteed.

FORMAL & EXTRAORDINARY

Ossolińskich 3

Nineteenth century cornices and baroque drapes lend an enveloping sense of luxury to this A-Class space. Epoka’s menu is based on Polish cookbooks from different epochs, with the dishes reconstructed in a way that’s innovative, unexpected and a roller coaster of thrills. La Liste officially rank it among the world’s Top 100 Restaurants.

EXQUISITE

Wilcza 46

Winning our 2022 award last year for ‘Outstanding Achievement’, chef Jacek Grochowina’s enclave of class looks dashing with its monochrome colours and muted gunmetal shades, but it’s the food that has made it the place Warsaw heads to live the life of the 1%. Treasuring detail and finesse, Nolita demonstrates fine dining hasn’t died.

ECLECTIC & UPMARKET

Dyletanci Koszykowa 47

FOR THE TASTING MENU

Rozbrat 20

Rozbrat 20

Fusing upmarket, casual styling with an exciting wine list, interactive service and the kind of atmosphere you can’t get enough of, Rozbrat 20 is a Warsaw gastro landmark. Under chef Bartosz Szymczak, the frequently changing menu has a real playful inventiveness to it.

Fluffy Pancakes

Chmielna 27/31 (City Center), FB.com/fluffypancakeswawa

Stepping into Fluffy feels like entering a sci-fi milk bar where nostalgia meets innovation. You order at a chic back window before settling at a curvy W-shaped counter designed for socializing. Conversations flow as a robotic tray delivers pancakes that are thick, fluffy, and cloud-like. Each bite offers a sweet, airy experience topped with fruits, chocolate, or matcha, resembling soft pillows dipped in sunshine. But Fluffy isn’t just about pancakes; it’s a full gastronomic journey in a bright, joyful atmosphere. The robotic tray enhances the experience, making dining feel like a modern fairy tale. With its charm and heavenly pancakes, Fluffy is a must-visit.

Regularly adjusted to utilize the best items the season has to offer, the menu is a triumph of expertly balanced tastes and is admired for some of the most interesting cooking in the city – think elegant with a localized twist. The Museum of Modern Art Returns

Before its October opening, the internet was already abuzz with love and hate for Warsaw’s new, stark white MSN building on Plac Defilad, just across from the Wars & Sawa pavilion. Step inside, though, and it’s hard not to feel a spark of awe. The center staircases—a nod to MSN’s original Emilia home—have already become an Instagram sensation. Much like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim in New York, where the building itself takes center stage, MSN’s spacious, open design feels like a perfectly curated canvas for Polish art, learning, and community. With the museum’s future black-theater complex and surrounding park yet to be completed, MSN promises to keep sparking conversation for years—much like Warsaw’s iconic Palace of Culture. And maybe, at the heart of all the debate, that’s exactly what Warsaw’s art scene needs.

Remembrance at BSW: Honoring History, Inspiring the Future NEIGHBORHOOD WILANÓW

BSW's adoption of a Warsaw Uprising memorial in Wilanów helps their students learn from the past while making a community impact. Through projects like "Changemakers" and a student-led memorial video, they foster respect for history and global citizenship, connecting with peers in 87 schools across 24 countries.

Tom McGrath, Principal Poland, and Warsaw in particular, arranges very thoughtful and moving commemorations, and November is a time when this comes to the fore. One only has to visit Powązki Cemetery at the beginning of the month to see how past generations are remembered and honored. In the UK, the symbol of the poppy has become a key part of honoring past generations, with November 11th being a solemn day of remembrance. In Poland, the same date represents the rebirth of the nation in 1918 after 123 years of partition.

BSW sees remembrance as a key value we wish to transmit to our pupils, where we respect the sacrifices and actions of previous generations to guarantee our freedoms and independence. Thus, when Michael Kelso, Year 3 Teacher and Lower KS2 Phase Leader, proposed taking responsibility for a Warsaw Uprising Memorial Site in Wilanów, the school was delighted to support this initiative.

BRITISH PRIMARY SCHOOL

OF WILANOW ul. Hlonda 12, bsw.com.pl

Michael Kelso-Franczak, Lower KS2 Phase Leader & Class Teacher

Having lived in the Netherlands, I was always moved by the sight of schoolchildren from the Arnhem area commemorating the WWII battle that took place on their doorstep by laying flowers on the graves of fallen British and Polish paratroopers every September—thus gaining an appreciation of the scale of sacrifice, which ultimately allowed them to live in peace, freedom, and prosperity.

I felt that adopting a local site of remembrance—the former grave of 5 insurgents of the 'Parasol' Scout Battalion, linked to the Warsaw Uprising—would provide our students with a lasting link to the local community and a better understanding of the history of the city in which they live, and the price it paid for wanting to be free.

A short, student-led film, shot to raise awareness of our patronage, has gained significant traction online, with over 3,500 views across our social media platforms. We hope that with community donations and the support of the ISP Changemakers project, we can renew and maintain the memorial site in perpetuity, as well as fund a number of projects within the school linked to the memory of young people who participated in the Warsaw Uprising.

Adam Leung, Year 9 Pupil

We chose important sites and landmarks in Warsaw that were either destroyed in the Warsaw Uprising or were built later from the rubble. Most of the places were around the Old Town, the site of some of the fiercest fighting; we also show the Palace of Culture, built on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto. Walking around Warsaw, we are constantly reminded of the casualties of war with plaques marking the sites of executions and murder.

We focused on how children were impacted by this conflict. We learned that children were often the victims in this war, but they were also involved in combat, communication, supplies, and medical support. Our memorial honors some young scouts who died in the opening days of the conflict. We remember their sacrifice.

Andrew Eddles, ILOS Coordinator

The adoption of this Warsaw Uprising memorial site will make a difference in our local community and spread the story of these young people’s ultimate sacrifice around the globe.

Our International Learning Opportunities for Students (ILOS) programme connects ISP students around the world through beyond-the-classroom experiences. Every ILOS programme provides our students with a platform to pursue their interests and practise their global competencies.

The memorial adoption is part of our 'Changemakers' programme, which encourages our students to collaborate with their peers to lead impactful projects. This work will be shared with students from 87 ISP schools spread across 24 countries. That is powerful!

Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul.

MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl

NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org

POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul. Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl

LOOKING BACK

HONORING

THE DEPARTED

Poland’s sacred day of remembrance and light

Zaduszki, known as All Souls Day, is a revered Polish holiday blending Catholic traditions with ancient Slavic customs. Observed on November 1st and 2nd, this tradition draws families from across the country to cemeteries, where they honor their departed loved ones by lighting candles and adorning graves with flowers, particularly chrysanthemums. At

dusk, these cemeteries transform into hauntingly beautiful scenes, illuminated by the warm glow of countless candles—a profound symbol of connection between the living and the spirits of the past.

Rooted in pre-Christian rituals, Zaduszki’s origins trace back to Dziady, or Forefathers’ Day, when ancestors were believed to return and visit the living. Early Poles left bread on graves and lit fires

along pathways to guide these spirits. Today, Zaduszki is more than a religious observance; it’s a time for families to reunite, honor memory, and embrace Poland’s rich heritage.

For visitors, it’s a poignant experience—one best approached with respect. Bring a candle to a forgotten grave, witness the glow, and partake in this unique celebration of remembrance and connection..
