Woman giving birth on PKP Intercity Train
A dramatic incident unfolded on January 17th in the afterboon when a PKP Intercity train traveling between Lublin and Bydgoszcz broke down near Sochaczew. Among the passengers was a woman in advanced labor.
Firefighters from Sochaczew and nearby volunteer fire brigades assisted the medical rescue team in safely transferring the woman to an ambulance. A rescue platform was also deployed to help around 300 passengers transfer to a replacement train.
Who’s earning BIG in Warsaw?
According to recent data from the Central Statistical Office, average salaries in Warsaw rose 11.1% year-on-year to PLN 8,189.74 gross. IT specialists lead the pack, earning over PLN 11,000 gross monthly, while young workers often settle for minimum wages. Some private company CEOs earn hundreds of thousands monthly, amplifying the income gap. Professions like drivers and receptionists earn significantly less. Despite rising salaries, homeownership remains out of reach for many, fueling concerns about fairness and opportunity in Warsaw’s labor market.

The "Challahorse" Phenomenon
A quirky AI-generated image of a woman with a horse-shaped challah bread has gone viral, captivating Polish internet users. Initially mistaken for a real creation, it quickly turned into a meme while highlighting the growing concerns over AI's ability to deceive. The incident sparked warnings, urging people to stay vigilant about the authenticity of online visuals. Meanwhile, businesses and bakeries have jumped on the trend, with IKEA and a Gdynia bakery offering their own playful takes on the viral trend.
Marszałkowska to get a green makeover
As part of the ongoing New Warsaw Centre project, Marszałkowska Street is set to undergo a green transformation, adding a 1 km-long green track and new pedestrian crossings. The initiative aims to replace asphalt with greenery, improve traffic flow, and reduce noise, all while enhancing the urban environment. The reconstruction will also include faster tram routes and new bike paths. With work expected to begin in summer 2025, the changes reflect a broader effort to revitalize Warsaw’s city center.
Historic Warsaw canopy restored with removal of kiosk
The Warsaw Downtown Commuter Rail stop's iconic modernist canopy has been partially restored with the removal of an outdated kiosk. The structure, built in 1963 and now a protected monument, showcases asymmetrical lines and a dynamic form that embodies post-war modernism. Originally designed by Arseniusz Romanowicz and Piotr Szymaniak, the canopy was entered in the movable monuments register in 2020. While the kiosk, a later addition, had been non-functional for years, its removal is a step toward preserving the canopy's architectural integrity.

Daily walks and dynamic angles fuel Anna Zawal's love for Warsaw’s architecture
INSIDER:
You have covered all the greatest spots for taking photos in Warsaw. How do you find your inspiration?
Anna Zawal: Since 2021, I’ve been taking photos every single day. This means I try to walk around the city daily. Sometimes I photograph famous places; other times, I seek out something new. To find inspiration, I take guided tours to explore unfamiliar areas, follow other Warsaw photographers on Instagram, and stay updated on new spots emerging in the city. I especially love capturing Warsaw in its seasonal beauty—blooming in spring, bursting with autumn colors, or blanketed in snow.
I like how you compose geometric compositions and your attention to detail. How do you decide what will make a good photo?
When I see a place or building, I usually envision the photo immediately. I also enjoy photographing the same location from different perspectives. Some of my favorite angles include looking up (low-angle perspective), looking down (high-angle perspective), and finding reflections in puddles. Do you spend a lot of time on retouching during post-production?
Because I take photos every day, my retouching process is quick and simple. I usually edit the photo right after taking it. If I’ve captured multiple photos under similar lighting conditions, I copy the settings and make only minor adjustments. I prefer my photos to be bright, colorful, and joyful. Sometimes people joke that the places in my photos look even more beautiful than they do in real life.
What is your favorite setting for taking photos?
Most of my photos are taken with my phone. I don’t adjust many settings—usually, I only check the lighting and focus point.
Can you share a place in Warsaw that you love to photograph?
I have many favorite spots in Warsaw. Two of my favorite buildings are the Geological Museum and the Warsaw University of Technology. I also love photographing locations in the city center, such as Warsaw Central Station and the skyscrapers in the area. Another set of places I enjoy capturing are metro stations, especially those on the M2 line.
I’ve lived in Warsaw my entire life—it’s my home, and I’m deeply inspired by its beauty. Through my photography, I strive to capture the soul of the city and share its uniqueness. By day, I crunch numbers in an office, but the moment I’m free, I’m out with my camera. I never miss a day of shooting, and I love exploring new places. Photography is my greatest passion, and I take photos every single day. I also enjoy traveling, with a special fondness for quick city breaks that offer fresh perspectives.

SADDLE UP AT DONKEY SHOE
Fast drinks, good vibes, and great stories
Hidden within Warsaw's Norblin Factory is a crudely welded door adorned with a simple donkey shoe, subtly marking the entrance to one of the city’s most exciting new speakeasies. Donkey Shoe isn’t just another cocktail bar—it’s a space that invites patrons to indulge in expertly crafted drinks while reveling in its understated charm. From mezcal and tequila to bourbon and whiskey, the bar offers a wide selection to please any spirit enthusiast (though perhaps not all in one evening).
Writing about a speakeasy presents a curious dilemma; their mystique lies in their secretive allure, shared only with the closest of confidants. Yet, as a service to readers, my moral compass wavers just enough to guide you to what’s undeniably one of Warsaw’s best-kept secrets.
Signature Cocktails
At Donkey Shoe, the cocktail menu is both imaginative and inviting, offering twelve original drinks, each with a distinct personality. Descriptions like “buttery/fruity/subtly smoky” (Piña Salsa) and “terrifyingly tasty/half dry/Texas sweet tea” (Texas Bourbon Massacre) bring a touch of poetic flair, almost like miniature haikus meant to be savored after a few sips.
Our bartender that evening, Kacper Kuczyński, encouraged us to try his signature cocktail, the Manzana Asado. Described as “sparkling/intense/a touch of smoke,” it mirrored Kacper’s own lively yet focused personality. As
Review
we chatted between his effortless service of the packed bar, Kacper proudly shared his title as the reigning Barfight Champion. Perched atop a stack of mixology bibles behind the bar, his wrestling-style championship belt gleamed—a fitting trophy for someone who combines flair and precision in every pour.
Kacper’s cocktails not only showcased his mastery but also demonstrated the balance that Donkey Shoe achieves: a lively social atmosphere paired with the precision of a top-tier cocktail experience.
Batching Cocktails: A Balancing Act
For those familiar with the world of mixology, the debate around
batching cocktails is both complex and polarizing. Some argue that batching sacrifices the artistry of on-the-spot preparation, while others praise it for the efficiency and consistency it brings. At Donkey Shoe, this technique is not a shortcut but a thoughtfully implemented practice to elevate the customer experience.
The process involves blending spirits or components in advance to allow the flavors to harmonize, akin to how a soup or chili tastes better the day after it's made. While some ingredients, like fresh citrus, are added at the last moment to preserve their brightness, other elements benefit from being pre-mixed and aged together, creating a drink that feels cohesive and refined.
For bars like Donkey Shoe, batching ensures that guests aren’t left waiting endlessly for their next round of drinks. Instead, the focus shifts to the social experience—sharing laughter, making new friends, and immersing oneself in the vibrant ambiance of the bar.
A Place to Stay Awhile
Ultimately, Donkey Shoe isn’t about theatrical performances behind the bar; it’s about fostering an environment where connections take center stage. The streamlined preparation of batched cocktails allows patrons to savor each moment without the interruption of long waits. Whether you’re reconnecting with old friends or mingling with new ones, Donkey Shoe is a place you’ll want to linger, glass in hand, savoring both the drinks and the company.

EIconic building turned foodie hotspot for locals
very conversation with Żoliborz Artystyczny locals about dining inevitably leads to Oh Ngon!—and with good reason. This unassuming shop is a double delight: a treasure trove of Asian ingredients and a haven for Vietnamese gastronomy. At the front, you'll find a spotless, well-stocked market offering everything you need to whip up a flawless Pad Thai or Panang Curry at home. Think frozen dumplings, ready-made onigiri, and their own house-made kim-
chi. But the real magic happens in the back, where the kitchen serves up some of the best Vietnamese dishes in Warsaw. The heart of Oh Ngon! is its family-run charm. The younger women at the counter exude a warmth that feels like they’re the daughters of the kitchen duo. There’s a quiet pride in everything they make, and I swear I’ve caught one of them sneaking a glance from the kitchen to gauge my reaction after a first bite. And what bites they are! The bánh mì here might just be the best in the city—always perfectly consistent, impossibly flavorful, and so good you’ll have to summon all your willpower not to order a second. The spring rolls are reliably excellent, and if you’re in the mood for something fresh and balanced, the bún bò Nam Bộ with beef is a must-try.

A CAFÉ BLOOMING IN WINTER
Step into a world of purple hues and floral elegance—a cozy escape designed to brighten even the gloomiest winter days.
Violet Café is a delightful new addition to the city's vibrant café scene. This charming spot invites patrons into a world where the essence of spring is captured yearround, thanks to its thoughtfully designed interior by the talented team at Trias Design Studio, led by architects Sviatlana Jyhan and Maria Hulevich.
Upon entering, guests are immediately enveloped in a harmonious blend of purple, beige, and white hues. The deliberate avoidance of metallic shades ensures a soft and cohesive ambiance. Floral motifs adorn the space, paying homage to the building's history as a flower shop since the 1960s. The high ceilings, soaring nearly 5 meters, coupled with expansive windows, flood the café with natural light, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere.
The layout is ingeniously divided into distinct zones without the use of solid walls. An open kitchen is subtly separated by a suspended transparent partition, maintaining visual openness while defining the space. Cozy sofa areas offer a touch of privacy, thanks to similar dividers that don't compromise the flow of light. Seating options cater to various preferences, from bar tables by the window for a quick coffee to larger communal tables perfect for group gatherings.
The café's flooring is a beige resin embedded with purple particles, adding an intriguing texture underfoot. Soft panels on the window frames enhance acoustic comfort, ensuring conversations remain intimate. Custom-made microcement tables are complemented by Italian designer chairs, such as Driade's Roly Poly and SCAB's Mentha, while elegant lighting fixtures from Nowodvorski illuminate the space with a warm glow. A standout feature is a textured wall uncovered during renovations, dating back 60 years. Recognizing its historical value, the designers meticulously restored this element, seamless-
ly integrating it into the modern aesthetic. Even the restroom is treated as an artistic enclave, boasting pink ceramics, a floral ceiling, and a generously sized mirror, making it a conversation piece in its own right.
Open daily from 8:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. on weekends, Violet Café offers a delectable breakfast menu. Diners can indulge in pancakes topped with butter, maple syrup, and blueberries; buttery croissants filled with scrambled eggs, salmon, avocado, and hollandaise sauce; homemade granola; or French toast adorned with fruit, caramel sauce, and vanilla mousse. For those with a sweet tooth, the café presents an array of desserts, including eclairs, cream puffs with crumble, and tangy lemon tarts.
In the words of architects Jyhan and Hulevich, "Violet Café is not only a café but also an artistic object created to inspire." This sentiment resonates throughout the space, making it a must-visit for both locals and tourists seeking a unique and uplifting café experience in Warsaw.
Insider Tips:
• Best Time to Visit: Mornings are ideal for a peaceful breakfast experience, while afternoons offer a livelier atmosphere.
• Signature Dish: Don't miss the croissant with scrambled eggs, salmon, avocado, and hollandaise sauce—it's a crowd favorite.
• Seating Secrets: For a cozy nook, opt for the sofa area; for people-watching, the bar tables by the window are perfect.

SQUARE ROOTS
Deep-dish joy that hits the spot
“If you are what you eat, I’m pizza!”
That’s the only way to describe how I feel about Kwadratowy Pies, where thick, Sicilian-style squares influenced by Detroit’s deep-dish tradition deliver pure, unadulterated joy. Biting into one of their pizzas reminds me of that iconic moment in Ratatouille—the food critic tasting
a dish that instantly transports him to his happiest childhood memories. For me, it takes me back to stopping by a local pizza spot after school, grabbing cheesy, golden Sicilian slices on my way home. Those after-school slices were pure comfort, and Kwadratowy Pies brings all those warm, familiar feelings flooding back.
The first Kwadratowy Pies, located next to its parent spot,
MaKa i Woda, on Chmielna, has a second outpost in Żoliborz. As a regular, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know their pizzaiolo, Josh, an El Salvadoran craftsman who pours his heart into making these heavenly squares. His passion shows in every bite and keeps me coming back weekly. While my belt loops remain mercifully unchanged, my heart grows a little bigger with each visit—especially when I dip that crust into their tangy sauce. If it’s your first time here, you really can’t go wrong. Don’t deduct points for their Hawaiian pizza—it’s all about having fun, not adhering to strict Italian traditions. My personal favorite? The square topped with crumbled meatballs. My partner, on the other hand, can’t resist the pepperoni pie, glistening with that signature oil sheen.
The personal-sized pizzas are perfect for dining in, but if you’re planning to take some home, go for the larger size. You’ll thank yourself later. And keep an eye out for their weekend sandwich specials—I have a feeling they’re destined to be just as crave-worthy as the pizzas.

SUNNY ESCAPE
A laid-back taste of Barcelona—right here in Warsaw.
Run, don’t walk, to this vibrant slice of Catalonia nestled in Mokotów. Barceloneta is the kind of place that quickens your pulse as soon as you approach—a sunny reminder that above Warsaw’s clouds, there’s always the warmth of the Mediterranean. If you’ve ever longed for the carefree spirit of Barcelona or the charm of its seaside sibling, Barceloneta, you’ll feel right at home here.
Maybe I’m being overly sentimental, but the first bite of their fried calamari transported me straight to a sun-drenched beach, complete with the laughter of children, squawking seagulls, and waves lapping at the shore. Or perhaps it was the Spanish chatter wafting from the kitchen, the sight of glistening Jamón Serrano, and the comforting presence of Estrella on tap. Either way, Barceloneta is a place worth making a detour for.
The atmosphere is effortlessly laid-back, with a mixed crowd that feels like a microcosm of Warsaw. Step through the doors on a lively weekend night, and you’ll feel like you’re waiting for your flight to Barcelona. There’s an undeniable energy in the air, as though at any moment, someone might break into dance on the tables. This infectious spirit, paired with the exceptional food, is why locals and Mokotów regulars alike flock to Barceloneta.
On the Menu
Tapas, of course, reign supreme—small plates perfect for sharing over cold beer and easy conversation. The padrón peppers, golden croquettes, and patatas bravas are as authentic as anything you’d find in a tuckedaway Sitges bar. But Barceloneta also offers surprises, like their grilled eggplant with spicy honey glaze, which had me hooked by the second bite.
For something more adventurous, try the Andalusian black pudding paired with sweet potatoes and almonds, or the fried sardines served with aioli—a perfect marriage of bold flavors. And don’t skip the thinly sliced Jamón Ibérico Altanera with a glass of red wine. It’s the kind of simple,
indulgent pleasure that alone makes the trip worthwhile.
Takeaway
When the Warsaw winter blues hit, Barceloneta is your sunny refuge. It’s the kind of place where smiles come easily and laughter fills the air, whether you’ve brought friends or plan to make new ones. So, grab a seat, order a round of tapas, and let Barceloneta bring a little Mediterranean magic to Mokotów.

Vibe
QUICK, SPICY, PERFECT
Fast, fresh, and fabulous—Miss Kimchi nails it!
There’s always that one go-to spot—consistent, quick, and satisfying—where you leave feeling like your time and money were well spent. For me, that spot is Miss Kimchi. Tucked near Norblin on Żelazna, just a stroll from Jero -
zolimskie, it’s hard to miss with its steady trickle of customers outside. Don’t let the line deter you, though. The service is swift, and diners rarely linger long after eating.
Miss Kimchi isn’t about fancy table service. Instead, it’s a casual, cafeteria-style
setup where you queue up, choose your meal, and watch as the friendly servers expertly scoop your sides onto the tray. For my order, I always go for the bento-style box with four sides. The radish and cabbage kimchi are non-negotiables for me—the tangy, fiery flavors are simply the best. If you’re looking to balance things out, I recommend their soy-sauce-marinated zucchini with onions—a subtle, savory counterpoint to the spice.
Once you’ve chosen your sides, the box heads to the kitchen for the main event. My winter go-to is their KFC (Korean Fried Chicken), which packs the perfect amount of heat to warm you up on a cold day. And here’s the true litmus test of any casual eatery: the rice. Miss Kimchi nails it. Despite the fast-paced, production-line vibe, the rice is perfectly cooked— fluffy, fragrant, and just the right texture.
Miss Kimchi is a modern, Korean twist on the Polish milk bar, complete with smiling, energetic servers and an atmosphere that’s refreshingly upbeat. The efficiency and warmth make it as much about the experience as the food itself. It’s become a new favorite of mine, and I’m delighted to share it with you. Whether you’re craving bold Korean flavors or just need a quick, satisfying meal, Miss Kimchi delivers every time.

Weekend specials bring even more excitement, with dishes like fresh sea bass and culinary inspirations from Italy, France, Spain, and South America. The menu also caters to lighter appetites, offering fresh salads and appetizers like padron peppers and crispy arancini.
For dessert, indulge in the creamy Basque cheesecake or the olive oil cake served with ice cream and Maldon salt—a delightful surprise for any palate. Those who enjoy cooking can take home premium cuts of meat, seasoned to perfection.

GRANO
YAuthentic Italian seasonal plates, endless charm
ou’d think that this quaint little Italian restaurant, tucked away in an unassuming corner of Powiśle, would be the quintessential mom-andpop spot. And in some ways, you wouldn’t be wrong. Except instead of "mom and pop," it’s Daniele – a culinary maestro who seems part chef, part cultural ambassador for Italy. His heritage, rooted deeply in
his Italian upbringing, spills out onto every plate, a love letter to his homeland’s cuisine.
Grano Duro, Daniele’s pride and joy, keeps things fresh –quite literally. The menu is a daily surprise, shaped by the seasons, local produce, and the best Daniele’s Italian suppliers have to offer. It’s a bit of a culinary tightrope act: a limited selection that changes every day. But when you have someone as passionate and knowledgeable as Daniele in the kitchen, it’s not a risk; it’s a promise. He’s the kind of chef who’ll tell you everything there is to know about an ingredient, down to where it was grown, who harvested it, and what makes it sing. Respect for his craft? Check. Enthusiasm? Overflowing. The conversation might start with Daniele’s ingredients, but it will inevitably veer toward his beloved carbonara. There’s a reason for that. On the wall, you’ll spot a running tally of how many plates of carbonara he’s served since Grano Duro opened its doors. When I visited, the count stood at over
12,500. And yes, there’s a story behind that too. Daniele decided to celebrate the 10,000th plate with flair: the lucky diner who ordered it won a free carbonara every month for life. Naturally, I asked him what he’s planning for the 20,000th. “Maybe a trip to Italy?” he mused, his eyes twinkling. Whatever it is, you can bet it’ll be as memorable as his cooking.
It’s this spirit of playfulness and authenticity that sets Grano Duro apart. Daniele’s food isn’t about trends or chasing Instagram clout. It’s about delivering genuine, soulful Italian dishes that respect tradition while remaining undeniably personal. Take his pasta e fagioli, for instance. On the surface, it’s a humble dish – the kind you might imagine being served to farmers after a long day in the fields. But one bite, and your senses are alight with delight. And then there’s the risotto, a dish Daniele insists every first-time visitor should try. Watching him prepare it is part of the experience – a bit of performance art that culminates in a dramatic plate slam, spreading the risotto just so. It’s not just food; it’s theater. The magic of Grano Duro isn’t lost on its customers. One regular has gone so far as to book a table for every day of the week. And honestly, it’s not hard to see why. With just a handful of seats, the restaurant’s intimacy makes it feel like a secret you’re lucky to be in on. But secrets like these don’t stay hidden for long. If you’re planning a visit, take my advice: book ahead. Grano Duro isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a love story – between a chef, his heritage, and every lucky diner who walks through the door.
“ On the surface, it’s a humble dish – but one bite, and your senses are alight with delight...
SLURP WORTHY
Uki Uki's new Zgoda location is a feast for the eyes and the palate
When Uki Uki first opened its doors in 2015, it didn’t just serve ramen—it introduced Warsaw to a noodle revolution. Back then, Taira Matsuki, the visionary behind the brand, proudly
showcased his ramen-making wizardry, including an impressive electric noodle machine approved by the Ramen Association of Japan. Nearly a decade later, his culinary empire has grown, with Uki Green bringing vegan ramen into the spotlight and the original location on Krucza drawing lines that snake down the block.
The udon, made in-house using the traditional Sanuki method, is nothing short of exceptional. Perfectly springy with a square cross-section, these noodles are crafted from Kitahona wheat flour from Hokkaido, a detail that sets them apart. Whether you go for the warm Sanuki udon in a rich bonito fish broth or the chilled Zaru udon with its dark, umami-packed dipping sauce, you’re in for a treat.
And it doesn’t stop there. The tempura—light as air and delicately crisp—earns high marks, with vegetable options like pumpkin and shiitake mushroom stealing the show. The Ebi tempura brings a crunchier, panko-style twist that somehow remains light and satisfying. Pair your udon with starters like silky salmon sashimi or juicy salmon teriyaki, and you’ve got a feast worthy of the hype.
“ It’s not just food; it’s Taira-san’s ode to tradition and innovation
The solution? A new outpost on Zgoda Street, just a short stroll away. This newly revitalized area, now home to a small Asian food trail, sets the stage for Uki Uki’s latest endeavor. The Zgoda location offers the same beloved menu but doubles down on ambiance. Think vintage Japanese signs, carefully sourced at auctions, and a mysterious 100-year-old demon statue tucked under a red gazebo— details that make dining here as much about the experience as it is about the food.
But let’s talk noodles, because that’s where Uki Uki truly shines.
While the focus is on tradition, Uki Uki isn’t afraid to innovate. The “Fusion Udon” menu offers playful twists, from tantan udon with its spicy sesame kick to buta curry udon, a comforting bowl of curried pork goodness. For ramen enthusiasts, classics like Tonkotsu and Miso Tonkotsu hold their own, proving that Taira-san hasn’t lost his ramen touch.
Uki Uki isn’t just about feeding the masses; it’s about creating a slice of Japan in Warsaw—a living homage to Taira-san’s grandmother, who inspired his passion for dashi and soup-making. So, next time you’re wandering through central Warsaw, don’t let the line deter you. Inside, you’ll find more than just a bowl of noodles. You’ll find a story, a tradition, and maybe even a demon or two.

Feliks Bar Café
Nowogrodzka 15, IG.com/eliksbar_cafe
Stepping into Feliks Bar Café feels like entering the golden age of cocktail culture. Behind its wooden doors lies a cinematic blend of elegance and charm: marble tables, gilded palm trees, and bartenders in crisp white jackets. Once Zaremba Café, the space has been reimagined, paying homage to Feliks Bar, the 19th-century visionary behind its historic home. The dual spaces tell a tale of contrasts—bustling nostalgia meets intimate sophistication, all wrapped in stunning design flourishes like a Murano chandelier and Pierre Paulin chair. From flawless negronis to smoky burrata, Feliks delivers exquisite cocktails, unforgettable flavors, and timeless Warsaw hospitality.
Weaknesses do not exist in Kontakt, and if they do, they have yet to be formally identified by any who visit. Looking glorious in its deep shades of blue, its look is complemented by a 400-strong wine list slanted towards natural, bio-dynamic and organic wines. The five-star experience is aided by wonderful food.
LOCAL WINES
Brać
Zgoda 3 & Sierakowskiego 4A
Resistant as traditionalists may be to the very notion of Polish wine, Brać have made it their mission to showcase its unknown quality. Presenting on-edge sips from niche domestic producers (including collabs with the Funky Fluid craft brewery!), all this is done in a stylish space that feels good to be in. From 2023, this was our favourite wine-related find!
NATURAL WINE
Rascal
Moliera 6
Formerly a canteen for ballet dancers, this address now holds the largest bar in Europe specialising in natural wines – you weren’t expecting that! Entered past a lavish drape, this cool space has a suitably adventurous choice of rebel wines.
BEER GEEKS
Jabeerwocky
Nowogrodzka 12
Good old Jabbers will never let you down. A Warsaw institution, the adventurous choice of beers gives nods to international pioneers, domestic talents as well as
The Buzz
their own house beers. Prewar floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. For something quieter, take your pint next door to their sister bar, Jabeerwocky Junior.
THE HEART OF POLSKI CRAFT
Kufle i Kapsle
Nowogrodzka 25
Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the brick interiors are thick with noise, clamour and the reassuring smells of last year’s party. On colder nights, make your way to the back to discover an intimate space sprinkled with vintage armchairs and wonky old lamps set at a natural tilt. The beers are among the most radical in Warsaw.
CUTTING EDGE CRAFT
Hopito Chmielna
Chmielna 24
Opened last year as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more mature in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own crazy brews.
OLD TOWN PINTS
Same Krafty & Same Krafty Vis-à-vis
Nowomiejska 10
Jammed between the Barbican gateway and the Rynek, Same Krafty’s pair of Old Town drinkeries face opposite each other to offer their own mini-pub crawl. Appearing as raucous and rugged tavern-like bars, the experimental craft beers are a league ahead of the mainstream fizz peddled by
the other nearby bars.
FRIDAY HIT
Grace Drink Bar
Krucza 16/22
Named in honour of Grace Jones, the choice of hero says much about a place that devotes itself to celebrating the glam excess of 80s New York. Rooms include one that’s all bordello style colours and velvety finishes, and another that’s high on plush purple, glass and mirrors. Fuelling the party, are classic cocktails, kamikaze shots and kitschy yesteryear hits.
CREATIVE COCKTAILS
Ave Pegaz
Piłsudskiego 9
Inside a lively interior that doesn’t take itself too seriously (check the ‘ceiling garden’), swivel about to gawk at a mighty collection of corkscrews and drinking implements. In this alchemist’s workshop find yourself enjoying some of the most creative cocktails in Warsaw.
COCKTAIL PORN
VHS
Poznańska 7
The shoebox sized VHS pays tribute to the 80s and 90s and is a model for good times –boasting a flamingo and pictures of Mr T., the toilet says it all. The drinks are among the wackiest in Warsaw, and they’re as fun to drink as they are to photograph.
RETRO HIP
Paloma Inn
Poznańska 21
Inspired by The Jetsons, the moon landings and the atom, Paloma Inn is a groovy blast of lunar lines, pea green colour tones and furnishings and fittings that are retro-fu-
turistic. The experience is compounded by easy listening muzak, 70s menu faves like fondue and mega fun cocktails.
THE ATMOSPHERE
Beirut & Kraken
Poznańska 12
Somewhere, amid all the junk relating to the Lebanese conflict (sandbags, ammo boxes…), you’ll find the spirit of Poznańska contained within this long, skinny bar. As fashionable now as it was when it opened, finish the evening in their connecting venture, the Pirates of the Caribbean-style Kraken. Evenings dissolve into a wild, happy whirl of international voices.
INSIDER CLASSIC
Pardon To Tu
Al. Armii Ludowej 14
Despite the upgrade in surrounds, they’ve retained the leftfield spirit of their old haunt thanks to flexi hours, a commitment to obscure sounds, and a well-spaced interior that references their former venue through its decadent colour scheme and wall of favoured musicians. The air of friendly, unforced cool is unmatched!
FOR THE MUSIC
Młodsza Siostra
Dobra 14/16
Known for his ear for upcoming talent, the owner Michał isn’t averse to taking risks in order to broaden Warsaw’s musical palate. The scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages give a vibe redolent of the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest, whilst inside it’s all creaking floorboards, mismatched furnishings and a clientele sourced from the local Academy of Fine Arts.
REBEL SOUNDS
Chmury / Hydrozagadka 11 Listopada 22
Set in a fleapit courtyard, it’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, but both are spiritually cojoined by a devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.
A BIT OF EVERYTHING
Foton
Wilcza 9A
You know it’s been an epic weekend when you wake up on Monday knowing that Fo ton was involved. Conversation with strangers is natural after a few of Foton’s cocktails, and these are enjoyed to a cool backdrop made up of fleet of tumbling plants perched on steel-framed irrigational contraptions.
CULT BAR
Gemba Chmielna 21
Adopting a loose-fitting PRL style, interiors include wood-paneled walls decorated with pics of Pope JPII, sporting pennants and framed artworks from the heyday of the Polish School of Poster. Tricked out with retro wallpaper, the perches by the bar are the most sought, but spillover seating can also be found in a winter garden enclosed by green and scarlet drapes – very David Lynch. Drinks include a broad-mind ed selection of craft beers, house cocktails and shots.
PRE-CLUB DRINKS
Bar Pacyfik
Hoża 61
Based upon the kind of Tijuana dive bar you’d have
happened upon during the Miami Vice era, Pacyfik is all candy floss pink and shades of teal: a raw-looking den that looks purposefully imperfect. Keeping the hip international crowd on the wrong side of drunk are kick-ass cocktails!
LATE NIGHTER
Republica San Escobar Poznańska 7
Lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.
ESSENTIAL CHECK-IN
Fabryka Norblina Żelazna 51/53
Without fail, the big winner of 2023 was Norblin – hell, we even saw Kieran Culkin walking through over summer!
In terms of nightlife, winners include the elite MOXO and the craft-minded Uwaga. Packed in the evening, the atmosphere is squared out perfectly by the live music that frequently escapes from the Piano Bar. The Insider fave though remains Piano Bar, a place with fancy cocktails, a 12-foot chandelier and a crowd that errs from late 20s upwards.
STUDENT CARNAGE
Nowy Świat ‘Pavilions’
Nowy Świat 26
For the highest condensation of bars in the capital head to ‘the pavilions’, a collection of ramshackle drinking cabins, shot bars and sheesha lairs inside a tight grid of shadowy back alleys. Adding to the gentle sense of confusion comes the realization that so many bars look the same –accessed through clattery, barred doors, visitors walk into murk and chaos.
LIVE SPORTS
Shamrock Sports Bar
Krucza 51
At long last, Warsaw has the sports bar it deserves.
Zapping in football, rugby and suchlike from around the world (but mainly Britain), this Irish-run spot is an offshoot of the atmospheric Shamrock Irish Pub on Zgoda. Though a lot smarter than its sister, the raucous sense of fun has carried over –as has the quality Guinness.
ALT. ENTERTAINMENT
Worek Kości
Bagatela 10
There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and that’s underlined by its collection of 400 replica skulls. Known for its burlesque nights, this passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre also has a busy roster of lectures dedicated to criminal profiling, forensics and serial killers. Oh, and the cocktails are good.
THE PRAGA VIBE
W Oparach W Absurdu
Ząbkowska 6
Craft beers lurk within the fridge, but for the seminal Absurdu experience order a tray of vodka before bulldozing through the crowds that gather to listen to Balkan rock and Afro-Latin bands. Somewhere, hidden deep beneath the creaking antiques and moth-eaten Persian rugs, you might be lucky to find a woodcarved bar.
NORTHERN NIGHTS
Havana
Słowackiego 16/18
Set on the first floor of a PRL era tower, the super cool interior offers up a coherent display of retro posters, luscious plants and light wood trimmings that are respectful of this space’s former life as a 1960s cafe. Perched among hip freelancers and theatre types learning their lines, sip away on trendy bio wines, adventurous lemonades, craft swigs or specialty coffee sourced from local roasters.
CLUB OF THE YEAR
K-Bar Powiśle
Leona Kruczkowskiego
Providing an alternative to the usual Smolna / Luzztro / Jasna 1 scene, the location inside one of the pillars that prop up
Poniatowskiego Bridge lends an ‘in the know’ frisson of adventure to your evening. Small, sweaty, raw and intimate, the industrial-style vibe is offset against oriental lanterns and the occasional Korean flag. Music-wise, and evenings promise everything from Italo-rave to techno trance.
UPMARKET CLUBBING
Sen
Wioślarska 6
Some would say that Sen enjoys its heyday in the summer when the rooftop terrace opens to afford views of the illuminated bridges that span the river. But even outside these months it’s long enjoyed a reputation as Warsaw’s premier super-lux club. High class cocktails and a stringent door policy have helped maintain their name as the principal destination for glam, catwalk excess.

Run by Marcin and Magda Jasiura, this omakase experience—where diners entrust the chef to curate a seasonal menu—offers culinary artistry at its finest. With a focus on perfecting the rice, thoughtful hospitality, and Japanese-inspired beverages, Noriko Omakase delivers a vibrant, elegant, and unforgettable journey into the heart of sushi tradition.
THE MICHELIN STAR Nuta
Pl. Trzech Krzyży 10/14
Andrea Camastra’s restaurant is a magical enclave in which time stands still. Mixing his famed scientific techniques with artisanal processes, his tasting menu is expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, as if it were an extension of his own firecracker character. Even the cheeseboard is a mind-bender – on our April visit, jaws hit the floor as this arrived in the liquified form of a pear consommé topped with warm gorgonzola foam. A bold, world-class adventure, no other restaurant offers such a ride – a second Michelin star seems guaranteed.
FORMAL & EXTRAORDINARY
Epoka
Ossolińskich 3
Nineteenth century cornices and baroque drapes lend an enveloping sense of luxury to this A-Class space. Epoka’s menu is based on Polish cookbooks from different epochs, with the dishes reconstructed in a way that’s innovative, unexpected and a roller coaster of thrills. La Liste officially rank it among the world’s Top 100 Restaurants.
EXQUISITE
Nolita
Wilcza 46
Winning our 2022 award last year for ‘Outstanding Achievement’, chef Jacek Grochowina’s enclave of class looks dashing with its monochrome colours and muted gunmetal shades, but it’s the food that has made it the place Warsaw heads to live the life of the 1%. Treasuring detail and finesse, Nolita demonstrates fine dining hasn’t died.

Adding depth to the lineup are the Hania Derej Quintet, Simona De Rosa with Confusion Project, and promising talents like Twoosty Mayonez and Know Material, Jazz Juniors Festival laureates. The series will conclude on December 7 with a performance by the boundary-pushing group sneaky jesus.
Since its debut in 2023, the Warsaw Live Sessions have drawn audiences eager to experience top-tier jazz, offering not only live performances but also the chance to participate in audio-video recordings. Creative Winter at the Royal Łazienki Museum
Inspiring workshops and exhibitions for all ages
This winter, the Royal Łazienki Museum and the Museum of Hunting and Horsemanship invite visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in a world of creativity, history, and nature. Running from January 20 to March 2, 2025, the program features workshops, educational events, and exhibitions inspired by the rich cultural and natural heritage of Warsaw.
The holiday offerings align with two captivating exhibitions: City of Animals, which showcases the hidden lives of urban wildlife, and Ikonosphere of Wyspiański exploring Stanisław Wyspiański’s theatrical legacy. From theater workshops for teens to hands-on art sessions, there is something for everyone.
Highlights include an ornament workshop on February 1, where participants will recreate peacock feathers inspired by Wyspiański's designs, and February 2’s floral-themed session crafting poppy and cornflower ornaments. Young artists can also dive into Krakow-inspired landscapes on February 15 or explore traditional weaving techniques on February 5.
The museum also offers engaging family-friendly activities like cross-stitching woodland creatures, learning to draw forest animals, and origami workshops. For older
participants, theater workshops from February 3-7 will culminate in a live performance, while February 16’s AI-assisted scenography session combines technology and art in innovative ways.
With prices starting as low as PLN 10, these workshops provide an accessible way to celebrate culture and nature. Don’t miss this chance to embrace creativity and learn something new at one of Warsaw’s most iconic locations.

Akademeia Advantage
Preparing students for academic and personal success
A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO LEARNING
In Warsaw’s Miasteczko Wilanów district, Akademeia High School has carved a reputation for its personalized approach to education. Unlike traditional one-size-fits-all systems, the school embraces the idea that learning should be as individual as the students themselves. By tailoring their academic programs to each student’s strengths and interests, Akademeia strives to provide a “best-fit” education. The result? Graduates who go on to secure places at some of the most prestigious universities around the globe including Ivy League schools in the US, Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London in the UK, Bocconi University in Italy and The Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, among many others.
NURTURING INDIVIDUALITY
At the heart of Akademeia’s philosophy is the notion that education is a shared journey. Students begin their time at the school with a detailed academic assessment, which helps shape their educational pathways. This

focus on individualized learning not only ensures that students receive the right academic challenge but also nurtures critical and creative thinking—skills that are essential for both university life and beyond.
The school follows the British curriculum, starting with a broad foundation of iGCSEs and gradually narrowing to A Levels as students progress. In the early years, students explore a variety of subjects, including mathematics, languages, sciences, and the arts, while also choosing specialized pathways such as biochemistry, humanities, or architecture. This flexibility allows them to discover their passions before committing to specific fields of study.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The teaching staff at Akademeia is another defining feature. Composed of subject specialists and PhD holders with a deep commitment to their disciplines, the faculty creates a dynamic and supportive learning environment. The school is also a recognized examination center for international boards like Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, underscoring its dedication to academic rigor.
In the May/June 2024 examination session, 18 Akademeia students earned 23 Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards, achieving both national and global distinctions (4 Highest Mark in the World and 19 Highest Mark in Poland). The Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards are a set of awards that recognize topperforming international students worldwide who achieved the highest mark for all levels of Pearson Edexcel qualifications.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
But Akademeia’s offerings go beyond academics. Personal development plays a key role, with mentoring programs, co-curricular activities, and a dedicated Wellbeing Team ensuring that students thrive not only
as learners but as individuals. The campus itself reflects this holistic approach, offering state-of-the-art facilities, including boarding accommodations that cater to both local and international students.
A PATHWAY TO SUCCESS
For many, the ultimate measure of a school’s success is its graduates, and Akademeia’s alumni speak volumes. Year after year, students leave the school well-prepared for the next stage of their education, earning places at top institutions worldwide. This success stems not only from rigorous academics but also from the school’s comprehensive university guidance, which helps students navigate the often-daunting application process. Akademeia High School represents a vision of education that is both modern and rooted in the belief that every student deserves a path tailored to their abilities and ambitions. By balancing academic excellence with personal growth, the school equips young people with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly complex world.

LOOKING BACK
EAGLE’S VALOR
Honoring Poland’s legendary submarine
February marks a poignant anniversary in Poland’s naval history. On February 10, 1939, the ORP Orzeł submarine was ceremonially welcomed in Gdynia, symbolizing Poland’s maritime strength and unity. Built in the Netherlands through nationwide contributions, the Orzeł was a modern marvel, embodying innovation and resilience.
Under the command of Jan Grudziński, the Orzeł’s daring exploits during World War II solidified its legendary status. From a dramatic escape from internment in Tallinn to intercepting the German invasion of Norway, the crew’s determination and bravery became a source of national pride. Tragically, the Orzeł disappeared in June 1940 under mysterious circumstances, leaving
behind unanswered questions and a legacy of heroism.
Today, the search for its wreck continues, driven by the "Santi Odnaleźć Orła" foundation. This month, we honor the submarine’s story—a testament to Poland’s
unyielding spirit. Whether through films, naval traditions, or ongoing efforts to uncover its fate, the Orzeł’s legacy inspires generations, reminding us of the enduring courage of those who fought for freedom.
MUSEUMS
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!
Warsaw’s rich history and cultural significance has left it with no shortage of museums to visit. Offering a well-rounded view of the city’s past and present, these are the seven you just shouldn’t miss…
FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM
The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. Okólnik 1, chopin. museum
MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM
A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and
rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul.
Piękna 28/34, mzprl.pl
MUSEUM OF WARSAW
Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with
curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl
NATIONAL MUSEUM
Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.
That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl
NEON MUSEUM
Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading
artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org
POLIN
Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul.
Anielewicza 6, polin.pl
THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM
If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl
