Trzaskowski Eyes Presidency

Warsaw City Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski’s presidential bid raises questions about City Hall leadership as he balances campaign duties and municipal responsibilities.

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski has officially been named the Civic Coalition candidate for Poland's 2024 presidential election. Despite mounting questions, Trzaskowski plans to continue his duties as mayor during the campaign, launching his pre-election activities on December 7. Should he win, Deputy Mayor Renata Kaznowska will assume leadership of City Hall until early elections are called. Critics have scrutinized his dual roles, but Trzaskowski insists on maintaining focus on Warsaw’s key projects while preparing for the national race.

In the News

Sky-High Design Triumph

LookUp, a multifunctional event space on the 42nd and 43rd floors of Warsaw’s Skyliner skyscraper, has won the 2024 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards in the “Space Design” category. Designed by the Wrocław-based studio MIXD, the space features minimalist elegance enhanced by dynamic elements like a striking ribbon-like installation. High-quality materials, including marble and copper, create a versatile environment for events ranging from casual gatherings to formal dinners, all with breathtaking views of Warsaw's skyline.

Skyline redefined

Warsaw's skyline is set to grow with a 193-meter skyscraper by Golden Star Group near Central Station, blending offices, a hotel, and apartments. Designed by APA Wojciechowski, the building references PRL-era twin towers and will neighbor the renovated Warsaw Presidential Hotel. Delayed since 2008, it now has a building permit. While adding architectural flair, the project raises concerns about traffic impact in the congested city center, where parking limits aim to curb car use.

Polish Design Triumph

The Polish History Museum in Warsaw has won the prestigious 2024 ULI Global Award for Excellence, recognizing its architectural brilliance, ecological design, and societal impact. Designed by WXCA studio, the "stone monolith of history" features a Portuguese marble façade with reliefs symbolizing Polish tradition. Spanning six floors, the museum includes a concert hall, library, and panoramic terrace. Already acclaimed by Prix Versailles, the museum underscores the global appeal of Polish architecture and its role in cultural identity.

MURAL

Praga in Color

A new mural by Tytus Brzozowski, titled Urban Jungle, adorns a wall on Okrzei Street in Warsaw’s Praga district. Celebrating local landmarks like St. Florian’s Cathedral and the Owl House, the vibrant artwork blends urban architecture with nature. Set near the footbridge, it invites reflection on harmony between city life and greenery. Scheduled for mid-November, the unveiling promises to enhance the area’s cultural and visual appeal.

For the full interview, with Tytus Brzozowski, scan the QR code below.

Warsaw Insider: How did your journey with murals begin?

Tytus Brzozowski: I was invited in 2016 by Skanska to create a mural for an office building in Warsaw’s Wola district near the former Kercelak marketplace. At 35 meters tall, it was an exhilarating challenge! The mural blended historical and modern buildings with cheerful bees, reflecting the rooftop beehives. As an architect-turned-artist, contributing to Warsaw’s spaces is both an honor and a thrilling challenge.

WI: What’s your process from idea to completion?

TB: Murals are demanding but fulfilling. After contracts are set, I begin sketching ideas, considering perspectives, sunlight, and unique wall features. A final drawing is painted in the studio over a month, transferred onto a wall stencil, and brought to life by my team over several weeks.

WI: What role does local context play in your work?

TB: Context is key! My murals tell stories about the places they inhabit. I highlight significant or forgotten buildings to create magical, localized realms that resonate with communities.

WI: What emotions does Urban Jungle convey?

TB: It portrays harmony between urban life and nature. By emphasizing greenery, I hope to inspire calm and reflection. Featuring Praga’s architecture nestled among trees, it illustrates the beauty and importance of green cities in addressing climate challenges.

Father-daughter depths

From nerves to awe: our first dive together

Acasual conversation at my niece's wedding with one of her bridesmaids about her passion for scuba diving, along with her showing photos on her phone to my daughter and me, got us hooked on exploring the underwater world. When she suggested that we try it together— since you always need a buddy to scuba dive— my daughter and I made a commitment to each other to give it a shot. Immediately, I felt incredibly fortunate to live so close to Deepspot, the perfect place for us to earn our certification.

After booking our first lesson, it felt like a countdown to Christmas Eve for my daughter. She talked about it nonstop whenever we spent time together. I was excited too, but also a little nervous. I worried that my age and lack of physical activity might make me accident-prone. Still, I was determined to try because I knew this could be an amazing way to bond with my daughter.

Arriving at Deepspot was thrilling. As we entered, we saw the long glass tube in the center of the 45-meter diving pool. “It’s like when sharks swim around you!” my daughter exclaimed. The friendly receptionist laughed and reassured her, “Don’t worry, there aren’t any sharks in that tank.”

After getting changed, we entered the shallow pool area and met Karolina, who began our safety instructions. It took me a few basic (okay, maybe “dumb”) questions to fully understand her explanation about how our lungs act like balloons to help us rise and fall in the water. My daughter hid her face behind her hands, embarrassed, but I just laughed it off, saying, “There’s no such thing as a stupid question!”—a classic dad-ism. We learned that Karolina’s father is also a diving instructor at Deepspot. That little detail gave me confidence, as though the universe was affirming my decision.

“ T he soundless world underwater, coupled with the sensation of breathing while floating in space, was utterly enlightening”

Then we met our instructor, Franklin, originally from the Dominican Republic. He had moved to Warsaw for love—his Polish wife. It felt like yet another cosmic sign since I, too, had moved to Poland for love. Franklin geared us up and showed us how to prevent our masks from fogging up using a spray of baby shampoo, which delighted my daughter because the smell reminded her of her childhood. Once we were in the water, we practiced a seemingly impossible skill: rising and sinking by controlling our breath, without using the inflatable diving vest. At first, it felt incomprehensible, but after a few back-and-forth laps in the shallow end, it clicked, sparking a sense of wonder. Meanwhile, my daughter was already swimming ahead with Franklin like Nemo and Dory.

When we surfaced, Franklin taught us underwater hand signals, including the critical one for “not okay/problem.” Then we approached the ledge of the shallows and peered down into the deep end. It was like standing in the lobby of a skyscraper in New York, overwhelmed by wonder. Watching other divers swim by felt surreal, as though we were in outer space, weightless.

On my first descent into the deeper water, I felt slight discomfort in my ears as the pressure increased. Franklin was quick to check on me, which reassured me I was safe. His calm and attentive guidance helped me feel at ease, and I dared to go deeper.

The soundless world underwater, coupled with the sensation of breathing while floating in space, was utterly enlightening. My daughter was completely hooked, posing for photos and moving as though she’d been diving her whole life. I felt so proud—of her for taking to it so naturally, and of myself for taking the leap of faith to try something new.

The following day, we watched the videos we’d re -

ceived of our experience. My daughter said in awe, “I can’t believe we did it!” I replied, “Yeah—and we’re going back to get our certification.” At that moment, it was clear: this was the best idea I’d had in a long time. Scan here to dive in!

URBAN LENS URBAN HUES

Through her lens, Anna Frączek captures the city’s striking compositions, vibrant hues, and perfect moments bathed in natural light.

Your eye for composition, especially in architectural shots, is remarkable. Do you consider architecture your favorite subject, or does it just offer unique opportunities for storytelling?

Architecture is definitely one of my favorite subjects. I’m fascinated by how buildings in an urban landscape tell their stories and how their shapes and lines create unique compositions. Every frame has the potential to reveal narratives just waiting to come to light.

That said, architecture is just one part of urban photography, which is my greatest passion. The perspectives of buildings, the interplay of light and shadow on Warsaw’s streets, the urban movement, and the figures captured in motion—all these elements are stories waiting to be presented through my lens.

You have a distinct talent for capturing vivid colors in your photos. How does your sense of color influence your choice of subjects and locations? Colors are like a palette of emotions for me. In my photographs, I often seek contrasts and harmonies that evoke specific feelings. For instance, the vivid

colors of Warsaw’s trams or the delicate shades in Łazienki Królewskie create a unique atmosphere that inspires me.

Thanks to my artistic experiences, I have a strong sensitivity to colors. Warsaw’s bright contrasts and rich hues give me endless opportunities to create compositions that bring life to the moments I capture, often with just my phone.

I’m impressed by how you utilize natural light throughout Warsaw in your work. Do you have a favorite spot in the city that consistently offers you the perfect light?

Although I’m not from Warsaw and am still discovering it, I have a few favorite spots that feel like my photographic bases. Łazienki Królewskie and Agrykola are particularly special—light filters through the old trees there, creating mysterious frames. Every walk in Warsaw is an exciting new adventure, and its undiscovered corners add a thrill to my work. I love searching for light in unexpected places. For example, the Gdański Bridge offers incredible opportunities during the "golden hour," when the sunlight creates magical reflections.

I also find stormy skies fascinating, as they add drama to my photos.

Your photos often feature strong lines and geometric shapes. How do you approach finding these visual elements in your surroundings?

When exploring Warsaw, I’m always on the lookout for contrasts that can create striking compositions. For instance, the Palace of Culture majestically rising amid glass skyscrapers and historic buildings is a perfect example of the city’s unique architectural collisions. These juxtapositions inspire me to create dynamic and powerful images.

Many of your shots evoke a strong sense of mood and atmosphere. How do you plan for this, or is it something you discover in the moment?

I definitely discover mood in the moment. I follow what attracts me—whether it’s a certain light, shadow, or unexpected detail. It’s often these accidental discoveries that create the most evocative images. The city’s rhythm, its bustling streets, and fleeting moments all influence how I approach my photography.

Do you have a specific routine or ritual when you go out shooting in Warsaw, or do you prefer a more spontaneous approach?

Every outing is a new adventure. While I sometimes plan a route, I find spontaneity often leads to the most exciting results. I like to wander—stepping off trains, exploring alleys, and uncovering hidden corners. My artistic instinct helps me find beauty in the everyday, and it’s often these random encounters that produce my most unforgettable frames.

How do you see your work evolving? Are there any new themes or projects you’re eager to explore next?

I’m eager to keep exploring Warsaw and growing as a photographer. I’m particularly excited about starting a photography course in project photography, which I won as a prize in a Warsaw photography competition.

Additionally, I look forward to participating in more photographic trips with Mobilephototrip. These adventures inspire me to experiment with new forms of expression. For me, every photo is a new story—a new adventure waiting to be discovered.

VINYL & VIBES

A vinyl café blending sound, coffee, and community in Warsaw

Warsaw’s café scene is constantly evolving, and Tekla is a shining example of its latest trend: vinyl-fueled coffee culture. Nestled in the circle of communist-era architecture near the statue commemorating the Lenino-to-Berlin battle trail, Tekla is more than just a place to sip a latte—it’s a cultural hub with a story.

Operated by Stacja Muranów, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the historical and cultural heritage of Warsaw’s Muranów district, Tekla stands out for its thoughtful approach to both coffee and community. The café is staffed by people overcoming hardships, a mission aligned with Stacja Muranów's commitment to community engagement. But Tekla doesn’t stop at great coffee; it also serves as a space for cultural and artistic exploration of the district’s rich past and vibrant present.

Inside, Tekla hits all the right notes—literally. The barista flips vinyl records on a turntable, creating a soothing soundtrack that flows effortlessly through the café's soundproofed ceilings. This attention to acoustics pairs beautifully with the café's smooth coffee blends, offering a sensory experience as rich as its ethos. Whether it’s a mellow jazz record or a vintage rock classic, the sound system turns every sip into a harmonious moment.

What makes Tekla truly special, however, is the sense of connection it fosters. This is

Street Food Reimagined Rola Pao brings the bold and vibrant tastes of Indian street food to Warsaw

As you approach the restaurant, walking down Jerozolimskie towards Marszałkowska, the intoxicating aromas of Indian spices beckon from the kitchen, creating an irresistible atmosphere of warmth and authenticity. It’s clear from the first glance that the restaurant is devoted to preserving the integrity of its flavors, with no artificial colorings or MSG to be found.

One of the standout features of Rola Pao is the sense of wholeness that the food imparts. Every dish feels complete, as though it has been prepared with a deep respect for tradition and a focus on wholesome, healing ingredients. This authenticity is evident in the balance of textures

“ each bite is a harmonious blend of authenticity, health, and vibrant Indian flavors"

and flavors, from the heat of fresh chilies to the earthiness of ground spices, and the fragrance of herbs that permeate the air.

The Rola Tikka Roll z Kurczakiem is a must-try for fans of Indian street food. The tender chicken, marinated in aromatic Indian spices, is paired with onions and cilantro, offering a perfect balance of savory and fresh elements. Served in the traditional "Pao" bread—soft, fluffy rolls similar to those found in street food dishes like Vada Pav and Pav Bhaji—the dish captures the essence of Indian fast food. Best eaten smashed together, the Pao bread and filling combine to create a satisfying bite that’s both comforting and bold.

Vegetarians and gluten-free diners will feel particularly welcomed here, as the restaurant’s thoughtful approach to cooking ensures there is something for everyone. The vibrant colors of the food—undistorted by artificial additives—are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate.

Taki Taki’s sandwiches are putting rotisserie chicken back on the map

Taki Taki

Księdza Ignacego Jana Skorupki 5 (Śródmieście), IG.com/ usagi.no.shima

After a two-year hiatus, Taki Taki has returned to Warsaw, trading its humble food truck origins for a stylish new spot in Powiśle’s Arkada Center. While it has evolved from street food to sit-down dining, its core remains unchanged: masterfully roasted rotisserie chicken. Yet, Taki Taki goes beyond the standard kurczak z rożna kiosks, reimagining chicken sandwiches with a creative flair that begs the question: why didn’t anyone think of this sooner?

The menu’s standout is the sandwich, featuring tender, boneless chicken legs marinated to perfection, roasted until the skin is crisp, and paired with their signature sauces. These are no ordinary birds either. Owner Maciej Ożóg-Orzegowski proudly sources chickens from a small farm in Karczew, ensuring a level of quality that sets Taki Taki apart. The bread, from Warsaw’s celebrated Aromat bakery, cradles the savory filling like a warm hug.

Side dishes round out the experience, with fire-roasted potatoes and fresh, housemade salads. For the purists, a whole chicken can be pre-ordered, offering a classic yet elevated option. The ambiance enhances the food, with Taki Taki providing indoor and outdoor seating, curated music, and a staff that takes pride in

connecting with their guests. Warsaw’s culinary scene has long overlooked the potential of rotisserie chicken, often relegated to beach-town kiosks. But Taki Taki’s approach— melding quality ingredients with inventive preparation— proves that it can be a serious contender in the street food arena. It’s high time the humble roasted chicken gained the recognition it deserves, and Taki Taki might just be the trailblazer to lead the charge.

BOLD ASIAN BITES

Quirky, comforting, and bursting with flavor—Eat My is worth the trek

Years ago, I recommended Bakalarska’s Asian restaurants to a friend. His reaction? A raised nose and a comment about “cheap, nasty pavilions.” Admittedly, the bustling back market—known for its bargain goods—can be polarizing. But let’s not confuse affordability with lack of quality. In fact, one of this insider’s favorite destinations, Eat My, proves that great food doesn’t need a high price tag to impress.

At first glance, Eat My’s menu feels like flipping through a folder of your favorite takeout menus: comforting, familiar, yet full of surprises. Operated by a Vietnamese kitchen that churns out dishes with speed and authority, the focus here is authenticity with a side of innovation.

Take their Pad Thai, for instance. It checks all the boxes other spots often skimp on, delivering a perfectly balanced

dish every time. Seasonal standouts like the coconut curry pack just enough spice to warm you up on Warsaw’s coldest days. Then there are the Gyuniku fries—a decadent mix of soft fries topped with teriyaki beef, unagi sauce, truffle mayo, dried seaweed, fried onions, and sesame. It’s indulgent, wildly unique, and absolutely worth the calories.

For an Instagram-worthy option, don’t miss the shoyu ramen, topped with a roulade of braised pork belly that might just trick your followers into thinking you’ve got a cinnamon roll floating in your soup.

Service here is just as memorable as the food. You’re greeted with warm smiles, quick service, and a bonus for first-time diners: share a photo on social media, tag them, and score a free drink.

Eat My is a spot worth the trip toward the airport. Whether you’re craving comfort, authenticity, or a new favorite dish, this restaurant delivers—and you’ll likely find yourself coming back for seconds (or thirds)

Good old Jabbers will never let you down. A Warsaw institution, the adventurous choice of beers gives nods to international pioneers, domestic talents as well as

their own house beers. Prewar floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. For something quieter, take your pint next door to their sister bar, Jabeerwocky Junior.

THE HEART OF POLSKI CRAFT

Kufle i Kapsle

Nowogrodzka 25

Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the brick interiors are thick with noise, clamour and the reassuring smells of last year’s party. On colder nights, make your way to the back to discover an intimate space sprinkled with vintage armchairs and wonky old lamps set at a natural tilt. The beers are among the most radical in Warsaw.

CUTTING EDGE CRAFT

Hopito Chmielna

Chmielna 24

Opened last year as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more mature in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own crazy brews.

OLD TOWN PINTS

Same Krafty & Same Krafty Vis-à-vis

Nowomiejska 10

Jammed between the Barbican gateway and the Rynek, Same Krafty’s pair of Old Town drinkeries face opposite each other to offer their own mini-pub crawl. Appearing as raucous and rugged tavern-like bars, the experimental craft beers are a league ahead of the mainstream fizz peddled by

the other nearby bars.

FRIDAY HIT

Grace Drink Bar

Krucza 16/22

Named in honour of Grace Jones, the choice of hero says much about a place that devotes itself to celebrating the glam excess of 80s New York. Rooms include one that’s all bordello style colours and velvety finishes, and another that’s high on plush purple, glass and mirrors. Fuelling the party, are classic cocktails, kamikaze shots and kitschy yesteryear hits.

CREATIVE COCKTAILS

Ave Pegaz

Piłsudskiego 9

Inside a lively interior that doesn’t take itself too seriously (check the ‘ceiling garden’), swivel about to gawk at a mighty collection of corkscrews and drinking implements. In this alchemist’s workshop find yourself enjoying some of the most creative cocktails in Warsaw.

COCKTAIL PORN

VHS

Poznańska 7

The shoebox sized VHS pays tribute to the 80s and 90s and is a model for good times –boasting a flamingo and pictures of Mr T., the toilet says it all. The drinks are among the wackiest in Warsaw, and they’re as fun to drink as they are to photograph.

RETRO HIP

Paloma Inn

Poznańska 21

Inspired by The Jetsons, the moon landings and the atom, Paloma Inn is a groovy blast of lunar lines, pea green colour tones and furnishings and fittings that are retro-fu-

turistic. The experience is compounded by easy listening muzak, 70s menu faves like fondue and mega fun cocktails.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Beirut & Kraken

Poznańska 12

Somewhere, amid all the junk relating to the Lebanese conflict (sandbags, ammo boxes…), you’ll find the spirit of Poznańska contained within this long, skinny bar. As fashionable now as it was when it opened, finish the evening in their connecting venture, the Pirates of the Caribbean-style Kraken. Evenings dissolve into a wild, happy whirl of international voices.

INSIDER CLASSIC

Pardon To Tu

Al. Armii Ludowej 14

Despite the upgrade in surrounds, they’ve retained the leftfield spirit of their old haunt thanks to flexi hours, a commitment to obscure sounds, and a well-spaced interior that references their former venue through its decadent colour scheme and wall of favoured musicians. The air of friendly, unforced cool is unmatched!

FOR THE MUSIC

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Known for his ear for upcoming talent, the owner Michał isn’t averse to taking risks in order to broaden Warsaw’s musical palate. The scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages give a vibe redolent of the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest, whilst inside it’s all creaking floorboards, mismatched furnishings and a clientele sourced from the local Academy of Fine Arts.

REBEL SOUNDS

Chmury / Hydrozagadka 11 Listopada 22

Set in a fleapit courtyard, it’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, but both are spiritually cojoined by a devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

Foton

Wilcza 9A

You know it’s been an epic weekend when you wake up on Monday knowing that Foton was involved. Conversation with strangers is natural after a few of Foton’s cocktails, and these are enjoyed to a cool backdrop made up of fleet of tumbling plants perched on steel-framed irrigational contraptions.

CULT BAR

Gemba Chmielna 21

Adopting a loose-fitting PRL style, interiors include wood-paneled walls decorated with pics of Pope JPII, sporting pennants and framed artworks from the heyday of the Polish School of Poster. Tricked out with retro wallpaper, the perches by the bar are the most sought, but spillover seating can also be found in a winter garden enclosed by green and scarlet drapes – very David Lynch. Drinks include a broad-minded selection of craft beers, house cocktails and shots.

PRE-CLUB DRINKS

Bar Pacyfik

Hoża 61

Based upon the kind of Tijuana dive bar you’d have

happened upon during the Miami Vice era, Pacyfik is all candy floss pink and shades of teal: a raw-looking den that looks purposefully imperfect. Keeping the hip international crowd on the wrong side of drunk are kick-ass cocktails!

LATE NIGHTER

Republica San Escobar Poznańska 7

Lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

ESSENTIAL CHECK-IN

Fabryka Norblina

Żelazna 51/53

Without fail, the big winner of 2023 was Norblin – hell, we even saw Kieran Culkin walking through over summer! In terms of nightlife, winners include the elite MOXO and the craft-minded Uwaga. Packed in the evening, the atmosphere is squared out perfectly by the live music that frequently escapes from the Piano Bar. The Insider fave though remains Piano Bar, a place with fancy cocktails, a 12-foot chandelier and a crowd that errs from late 20s upwards.

STUDENT CARNAGE

Nowy Świat ‘Pavilions’

Nowy Świat 26

For the highest condensation of bars in the capital head to ‘the pavilions’, a collection of ramshackle drinking cabins, shot bars and sheesha lairs inside a tight grid of shadowy back alleys. Adding to the gentle sense of confusion comes the realization that so many bars look the same –accessed through clattery, barred doors, visitors walk into murk and chaos.

LIVE SPORTS

Shamrock Sports Bar

Krucza 51

At long last, Warsaw has the sports bar it deserves. Zapping in football, rugby and suchlike from around the world (but mainly Britain), this Irish-run spot is an offshoot of the atmospheric Shamrock Irish Pub on Zgoda. Though a lot smarter than its sister, the raucous sense of fun has carried over –as has the quality Guinness.

ALT. ENTERTAINMENT

Worek Kości

Bagatela 10

There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and that’s underlined by its collection of 400 replica skulls. Known for its burlesque nights, this passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre also has a busy roster of lectures dedicated to criminal profiling, forensics and serial killers. Oh, and the cocktails are good.

THE PRAGA VIBE

W Oparach W Absurdu

Ząbkowska 6

Craft beers lurk within the fridge, but for the seminal Absurdu experience order a tray of vodka before bulldozing through the crowds that gather to listen to Balkan rock and Afro-Latin bands. Somewhere, hidden deep beneath the creaking antiques and moth-eaten Persian rugs, you might be lucky to find a woodcarved bar.

NORTHERN NIGHTS

Havana

Słowackiego 16/18

Set on the first floor of a PRL era tower, the super cool interior offers up a coherent display of retro posters, luscious plants and light wood trimmings that are respectful of this space’s former life as a 1960s cafe. Perched among hip freelancers and theatre types learning their lines, sip away on trendy bio wines, adventurous lemonades, craft swigs or specialty coffee sourced from local roasters.

CLUB OF THE YEAR

K-Bar Powiśle

Leona Kruczkowskiego

Providing an alternative to the usual Smolna / Luzztro / Jasna 1 scene, the location inside one of the pillars that prop up

Poniatowskiego Bridge lends an ‘in the know’ frisson of adventure to your evening. Small, sweaty, raw and intimate, the industrial-style vibe is offset against oriental lanterns and the occasional Korean flag. Music-wise, and evenings promise everything from Italo-rave to techno trance.

UPMARKET CLUBBING

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Some would say that Sen enjoys its heyday in the summer when the rooftop terrace opens to afford views of the illuminated bridges that span the river. But even outside these months it’s long enjoyed a reputation as Warsaw’s premier super-lux club. High class cocktails and a stringent door policy have helped maintain their name as the principal destination for glam, catwalk excess.

QQ Warsaw on Żurawia blends tradition with a modern twist, focusing on texture and flavor. The name "QQ" refers to a Hokkien term describing the ideal texture of food—chewy and bouncy, much like al dente pasta. The menu highlights include the surprising salty coffee, a matcha latte with an extra shot, and a standout bulgogi sandwich. With a seamless operation and a mix of Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Thai influences, QQ Warsaw offers a harmonious Asian dining experience. Its commitment to quality and inviting atmosphere makes it a favorite for both locals and visitors.

THE MICHELIN STAR

Pl. Trzech Krzyży 10/14

Andrea Camastra’s restaurant is a magical enclave in which time stands still. Mixing his famed scientific techniques with artisanal processes, his tasting menu is expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, as if it were an extension of his own firecracker character. Even the cheeseboard is a mind-bender – on our April visit, jaws hit the floor as this arrived in the liquified form of a pear consommé topped with warm gorgonzola foam. A bold, world-class adventure, no other restaurant offers such a ride – a second Michelin star seems guaranteed.

FORMAL & EXTRAORDINARY

Nineteenth century cornices and baroque drapes lend an enveloping sense of luxury to this A-Class space. La Liste officially rank it among the world’s Top 100 Restaurants.

EXQUISITE

Winning our 2022 award last year for ‘Outstanding Achievement’, chef Jacek Grochowina’s enclave of class looks dashing with its monochrome colours and muted gunmetal shades, but it’s the food that has made it the place Warsaw heads to live the life of the 1%. MASTER OF POLISH REALISM

Explore Józef Chełmoński's artistry, blending vivid realism and rural mysticism in this monumental exhibition.

CULTURE

The National Museum in Warsaw’s current exhibition, dedicated to Józef Chełmoński (1849–1914), invites art lovers to immerse themselves in the rich and evocative world of one of Poland’s most influential 19th-century painters. The exhibition, which runs until January 26, 2025, is a rare and extensive opportunity to witness Chełmoński’s masterful blend of realism and mysticism, showcasing over 100 of his paintings, sketches, and drawings, many never before displayed to the public.

Chełmoński was a painter with an exceptional gift for capturing the essence of rural life in Poland. His work is imbued with a vivid attention to detail, a deep reverence for nature, and an innate ability to convey the emotions of his subjects, from horses galloping through stormy landscapes to the delicate stillness of a winter night. What sets this exhibition apart is not just the depth of Chełmoński’s talent, but his ability to portray a harmonious relationship between humans, animals, and nature—a theme that resonated deeply with the artist’s philosophy and still captivates audiences today.

One of the most striking aspects of Chełmoński’s work is his portrayal of Polish landscapes, which he painted with an unflinching realism that brings the countryside to life. His iconic piece Indian Summer (Babie Lato), painted in 1875, remains a stunning example of his ability to evoke the beauty and simplicity of rural Poland. The warm, golden hues of the late summer light, the gentle movement of figures in the field, and the rustic charm of the country scenes transport viewers to a time when the rhythms of rural life were closely attuned to nature’s cycles.

Yet, Chełmoński’s art is not just about idyllic scenes of Polish farm-

land—it also ventures into more dramatic and even mystical realms. His winter landscapes, such as Winter Night in Ukraine (Noc na Ukrainie zimą), present the stark beauty of a frozen world under the deep, shadowy skies of night. These paintings, with their ethereal quality, offer a meditative look at nature’s solitude and the almost spiritual connection Chełmoński felt with the land. The contrast between the harshness of winter and the delicate, almost transcendent quality of the night sky is a testament to the artist’s ability to infuse his work with emotion and depth, making his landscapes not just visual experiences, but emotional ones as well.

Chełmoński’s fascination with animals, particularly horses, is another defining feature of his artistic legacy. Throughout his career, he depicted horses in all their raw energy and power, capturing the anatomy, muscle, and movement of these magnificent creatures with

unparalleled skill. His Four-in-Hand (Czwórka), which presents a team of horses in full gallop, showcases his technical expertise in rendering motion, and the sheer energy of the scene is palpable. Similarly, his Storks (Bociany) and Partridges (Kuropatwy) exemplify his keen eye for the grace and precision of bird flight, further emphasizing his unique ability to immortalize the fleeting moments of nature.

While Chełmoński’s landscapes and animals are undoubtedly the heart of his work, his depiction of rural life and human interactions also offers a poignant reflection on the society he observed. His Morning in the Forest (Rankiem w puszczy) and Before the Rain (Przed deszczem) reveal an artist deeply attuned to the rhythms and moods of country folk, capturing intimate, almost anecdotal moments that reveal the quiet dignity and simplicity of rural existence. This, coupled with his interest in the emotional undertones of human

interactions, adds a subtle layer of narrative to his art.

Visitors to the exhibition are also invited to explore the artist’s working process through sketches and preparatory drawings, providing a unique glimpse into Chełmoński’s creative evolution. His sketches— some of which were so detailed that they were almost finished works in their own right—reveal his passion for observing life closely, capturing fleeting moments and emotions with quick, spontaneous strokes. The exhibition also features an audio guide, narrated by the iconic Krystyna Czubówna and naturalist Adam Wajrak, offering deeper insights into the themes and techniques that defined Chełmoński’s work.

This exhibition is an immersive experience that not only showcases Chełmoński’s technical brilliance but also evokes a connection to the Polish countryside that will resonate with visitors from all walks of life. Whether you are an art aficionado or a newcomer to Chełmoński’s world, this exhibition

offers something profound—a glimpse into an artist who, through his evocative landscapes, emotional portraits, and dynamic animal studies, captured the spirit of Poland in the 19th century.

Don’t miss this chance to experience the life and legacy of Józef Chełmoński, whose art continues to inspire and captivate with its timeless beauty.

You and Me Rediscovered

Explore the captivating legacy of Poland's most stylish magazine, Ty i Ja

In the gray landscape of 1960s Poland, the lifestyle magazine Ty i Ja (You and Me) was a bold splash of color and innovation. Now, the exhibition Ty i Ja. Lifestyle Magazine from the Polish People’s Republic at the History Meeting House invites visitors to rediscover the cultural phenomenon that once graced Polish newsstands, selling out within hours of publication.

The magazine’s chic covers and avant-garde layouts—shaped by visionary designers like Roman Cieślewicz and later Elżbieta and Bogdan Żochowscy—were themselves works of art. Inside, readers found a rich tapestry of content: Parisian fashion collages, dazzling full-page photography, and illustrations by luminaries such as Picasso and Topor. Beyond the visuals, it was a gateway to modern living, offering recipes for croque monsieur, tips on sleek interior design, and articles on cutting-edge topics like DNA.

While often dubbed a “window to the West,” Ty i Ja was also a reflection of a Poland striving to modernize, marrying aspirations for global sophistication with local realities. This duality is explored in the exhibition through archival treasures, including original layouts, design notes, and reinterpretations by contemporary artists Nicolas Grospierre, Tomasz Szerszeń, and Szymon Zakrzewski.

Curated by Julia Libera and Agata Szydłowska, the exhibition does more than celebrate a bygone era. It

illustrates how Ty i Ja shaped Polish identity, blending creativity with pragmatism in a time of scarcity. Whether you’re a design aficionado or simply curious about Polish cultural history, this exhibition offers an inspiring journey through an extraordinary publication.

AA Time of Giving

a School

The Christmas season is a very special time at the British Primary School of Wilanow (BSW). It is also a time for our community to give back to those in need.

is also our to give

Christmas seems to come earlier every year. Before the Halloween pumpkins have even wilted, tinsel and fairy lights begin to twinkle, enticing shoppers everywhere. At BSW, however, we hold back on Christmas merriment until the arrival of St. Nick on December 6th. In Poland, St. Nicholas (Mikołaj) brings gifts in the first week of December, and we delight our pupils with a Dumbledore lookalike in a bishop’s robes and holding a crozier—quite different from the Coca-Cola version that gained popularity in the 20th century.

December 6th is a time for gifts, especially for our youngest pupils, but it’s also the time for our Christmas fundraiser. Our long-standing Christmas charity is Smile Warsaw, a foundation that supports the homeless in the city by serving hot meals near the Palace of Culture on Sundays and distributing clothes, toiletries, and, of course, smiles to those in need. The charity is staffed by many members of Warsaw’s international community, offering them a way to give back to the city they call home.

stalls

Class teachers are busily working with their students to plan fundraising stalls for December 6th in the school canteen. Year groups will compete to raise funds by selling used books, second-hand toys, delicious homemade baked goods, and more, including lotteries and raffles. December 6th is also Christmas Sweater Day at BSW, with fun class photos and plenty of festive cheer. Additionally, we are collecting men’s coats, socks, and toiletries for donation.

With the funds raised, we hope to sponsor and staff one of Smile Warsaw’s Sunday food distribution events. Our school canteen staff will help prepare a nutritious and tasty meal for this occasion. This event will also give our older pupils a chance to interact with members of the homeless community, helping them reflect on their own good fortune and fostering empathy.

MUSEUMS

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!

Warsaw’s rich history and cultural significance has left it with no shortage of museums to visit. Offering a well-rounded view of the city’s past and present, these are the seven you just shouldn’t miss…

FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM

The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. Okólnik 1, chopin. museum

MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM

A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and

rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul.

Piękna 28/34, mzprl.pl

MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl

NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org

POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul. Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl

LOOKING BACK

CENTRAL STATION TURNS 49

Celebrating decades of innovation and history

Opened on December 5, 1975, Warsaw Central Railway Station quickly became a symbol of modernity and ambition in Poland. Designed by architects Arseniusz Romanowicz and Piotr Szymaniak, this late-modernist marvel was constructed in just three years. Equipped with innovative

features for its time—such as escalators, automatic doors, and moving walkways—it set a new standard for public infrastructure in Poland.

The station's grand inauguration coincided with the 7th Worker Party Congress, underscoring its political and cultural significance. Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev arrived at Platform 3 on December 7, marking the station as a backdrop to diplomatic history.

Through the decades, Warsaw Central Station has remained the beating heart of the city’s rail network, connecting domestic and international travelers alike. A major renovation ahead of Euro 2012 solidified its status as a key transit hub, blending its historic legacy with contemporary needs. Today, it stands as both a gateway and a testament to Warsaw’s resilience, evolving alongside the city it serves.
