Celebrating 20

Years of Poland in the EU

Former PM Leszek Miller marks Poland's EU anniversary with a mural unveiling and his retirement from politics.

Former Prime Minister Leszek Miller marked the 20th anniversary of Poland’s EU membership on May 2nd by unveiling a mural in Warsaw. Miller used the occasion to announce his departure from politics, stating, "There will be no more campaigns or elections." Despite retiring, Miller emphasized he will not remain silent on important issues. The mural, created by Łukasz Bieniek, features Poland's borders against the EU flag, symbolizing the country's integration and growth over the past two decades. The event highlighted Poland's significant achievements within the EU, reflecting on its financial, social, and political progress.

In the News

Fresh Paint!

The renovation of the iconic egg sculpture on Pięciu Rogów Square in Warsaw is now complete. Originally designed to change color naturally over time, the sculpture was unable to do so due to its anti-graffiti coating. However, the sculpture has now been freshly repainted in a lighter shade by Joanna Rajkowska, allowing it to once again captivate visitors with its unique charm. Some people, though, think it looks like it was made from the Easter egg dyeing kits that are left over on discount after the holidays that nobody buys.

WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?

Toilet or Not Toilet?

In the heart of Warsaw, a mere toilet saga unfolds: a decade-long tussle over a loo in Saski Garden. The sad pavilion on Królewska Street stands forgotten, crumbling as bureaucrats debate, and architects pull out hair. City officials bicker over costs like it's a skyscraper, while vandals add their avant-garde touch to the facade. Meanwhile, the historic garden sighs, waiting for relief. "Will it be a palace or a potty?" asks architect Aleksandra Wasilkowska, caught in this municipal constipation. As Warsaw holds its breath, one thing's clear: this toilet tale is just another chapter in the city's quirky, slow-motion urban opera.

CULTURE

New Plans For the Modern Art Pavilion...

Big news from Warsaw’s cultural scene: The Museum of Modern Art is moving from its pavilion on the Vistula River to a new building on Marszałkowska. But don't worry, the iconic pavilion, with its modular wooden structure designed by Austrian architect Adolf Krischanitz, isn't going anywhere. The city has big plans to transform this space into a vibrant hub for dance and performing arts. There will be a competition for curators and artistic collectives to showcase their vision for the space. Set to start in mid-2025, the pavilion will soon be buzzing with creativity and performances. Stay tuned for more updates!

Restaurant

The EATERY trad. is one of my favorite restaurants in Warsaw. They serve delicious, traditional polish cuisine. Confident, on trend, expressive, refined. Perfectly measured in its concept, the interiors are somewhat dated, yet elegant. You'll find sparkles in the cut crystal glass remeniscent of the Polish cult classic “Killer”. Perfect place for a date or a night with your best friend.

TEN Salon redefines the hair salon experience. It starts with a delicious coffee and an honest conversation about your expectations. My favorite part is the relaxing hair wash with a head massage, which feels like heaven. Professionals that work here always make sure that you leave this place full of confidence and with your inner batteries recharged. A refreshing ritual that offers so much more than a regular haircut. The industrial yet cozy interior and positive energy enhance the experience. And on top of that their signature hair products, that smell divine, work wonders and I always take some home with me.

Pink Vegan nails it with fresh, inventive flavors perfect for summer. The sushi burgers in tempura and asparagus tacos are must-tries, even for vegan skeptics. The vegan shrimp in tempura, crispy bao buns, and mushrooms are simply unforgettable. Each dish is a culinary delight, perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented.

The patio overlooking the park enhances the summer vibe and the staff are absolutely top-notch, friendly, and efficient. With its lovely decor and fantastic location, this place is a gem for vegans and non-vegans alike. TRADITIONAL, YET MODERN

One name has been on everyone’s lips this summer: The EATERY trad. Housed in a sleek 1960s building, just a frisbee toss from the Wisła, The EATERY boasts accolades like Forbes' Top 50 Restaurateurs in Poland 2024. Talented chef Rafał Pędowski crafts a delectable mix of tradition and innovation. The schabowy is

a crispy, tender delight, best shared (or not!). Seasonal stars like wild garlic sauce and pyzy dumplings shine, while the kaszanka, with its crispy onions and honeyed apple, is unforgettable. Don't skip the desserts – they are babcia-approved perfection.

WARSAW'S OLD TOWN IS GENERALLY A MUST FOR VISITORS AND HARD TO IGNORE FOR VARSOVIANS. HERE ARE A FEW PLACES WE CONSIDER TOP SPOTS TO EAT AND DRINK WHEN YOU ARE TIRED OF PIEROGI AND GOFRY.

There's nothing quite like sampling Polish craft beer during the summer in Warsaw, especially when you can sit in the Old Town Square. Kawiarnia Same Fusy offers the best selection in a prime location. If you need more of a pickme-up, they specialize in teas from around the world and have celestial carrot cake.

Their schnitzel and tartare are top-notch too, perfect for comparing to any you've had before. Take a look at their instagram to begin feasting with your eyes. A must-try for both Old Town and New Town explorers.

WOpened in December 2021, Kawiarnia Patio features a retro-styled interior and a stunning covered patio with bright columns and stone flooring. The in-house baked bread and pastries are unbeatable, and the meticulously chosen coffee is divine. An oasis off the beaten tourist path in Old Town Warsaw.

BAR

arsaw's Old Town is more than just the Royal Castle, though its grandeur and meticulously reconstructed interiors (some parts surprisingly young!) are a must-see. Climb the 147 steps of St. Anne's Church for breathtaking views, touch the patched-up bell on ul. Kanonia for good luck, or find the ZPAF photo gallery's tranquil backyard with daily Chopin concerts. Dawna Street offers a charming passage and a romantic viewpoint with a story of its own. Take a ride on the escalator beneath the Old Town, a communist-era marvel, and learn about the city's protector, the mermaid at the Museum of Warsaw on the Rynek (Old Town Square). Touch the original base of Zygmunt's Column for good luck - a symbol of resilience after being toppled in WWII. Legends abound too, from the heartbroken prince transformed into a stone bear outside the Jesuit Monastery to the tale of the Pigeon Lady who defied wartime hardships to feed the city's birds. This is just a taste of the magic waiting to be discovered in Warsaw's Old Town.

HALF

Journey past the Barbican into New Town for Ukrainian star. Żyto's borscht will redefine the dish for life. Forget watery bowls - theirs is a rich, soul-warming concoction that'll knock your socks off. Meat lovers rejoicetheir dishes are juicy and succulent. Fuel up for your daily adventure with a delicious breakfast at Mon Nom in the New Town. This popular spot offers a unique atmosphere attracting a young crowd. The stoic modernist edifice of Warsaw's National Museum evokes the grandeur of Poland's Second Republic. Descend into Muzealna, a sun-kissed chamber adorned with pioneering Polish design, complemented by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a tranquil garden oasis. This barge/restaurant/bar is a favorite of the insider team who almost want to keep it a secret all to themselves, but that would be selfish. Don't blame me if it becomes the next hotspot!

OYSTER GARDEN

One doesn't typically expect much from the most touristy street in Warsaw, but a seafood loving friend's recommendation about Czarnomorka led me to this hidden gem. Ukrainians have found solace here, thanks to a reputable fish supplier who relocated her business amidst the chaos of invasion. If you're in the know, you'll want to make the trip to this spectacular spot with friends. The sheer variety is astounding, and as you step inside, you're greeted by oysters kept fresh in an aquarium— wince-worthy if you poke them with a fork. For a real splurge, go for the RollsRoyce of oysters, the "Gillardeau," marked with their trademark laser-etched "G" on the shell. Or, try the Forszmak ze śledzia, a herring paste that's both salty and delicate, pairing perfectly with vodka and good company.

VIEW TO A GRILL

Mąka i Woda, one of Warsaw's OG Napelon pizza joints, continues to set the standard since their very first pie hit the table. But here's the kicker: they've upped their game with a killer outdoor grill at their Zoliborz spot in the old factory set up on Duchnicka. Picture this: top-notch cuts of meat grilled to perfection, served alongside seasonal gems like mind-blowing corn on the cob. Sure, it can get a bit rowdy with the family crowds, but fear not — these pros know how to treat their guests right. Trust me, you're in for a sizzling good time.

ul. Duchnicka 3, makaiwoda.pl

COURTYARD COOL

Celebrating a decade of modern Polish perfection, Bibenda grabs our #10 spot. Their unique, seasonal dishes and service as smooth as a five-star watch are legendary. Now, they've upped the ante with a stunning new patio – think sleek, museum-worthy design – perfect for escaping the wait (and the elements). Here's to ten years, and hopefully, ten fewer minutes of table envy!

13 WET N' WILD

DSUP Academy's been teaching newbies and veterans alike to navigate the Wisła since 2013. They offer intro courses, sunset paddles, even yoga on a board (don't fall in!). They'll even rent you the gear. So ditch the crowds, grab a paddle, and see Warsaw from a cooler (and wetter) perspective.

Port Czerniakowski-Marina Warszawa, supacademy.waw.pl

itch the tourist traps. The Wisła this summer is all about quirky fun. Snap obligatory selfies on the spiral staircase of Most Gdański bridge north of Old Town. Then, hightail it across the new pedestrian bridge to explore the untamed side of Praga on the Wisła's right bank.

Art vultures can catch "Tiger in the Garden" (Ukrainian folk art!), closing July 15th at the Museum on the Vistula. For a less pretentious vibe, sip craft beers on the rocking Barka Wynurzenie barge or scream yourselves hoarse at the Euro finals on the riverside fan zone. Need a break from the crowds? Take a scenic water tram ride (Wilga, Pliszka, Słonka) or bike the wild trails along the river. Get your zen on with yoga by the water, or soak up panoramic views from the university library's rooftop garden.

POOL WITH A VIEW

Amidst the historic bricks of Powiśle Power Plant, the first Barceló Hotel in Poland brings a swanky touch to Warsaw’s skyline. With 151 rooms and a rooftop pool bar, it offers jaw-dropping views of the Vistula’s right bank, Świętokrzyski Bridge, and National Stadium.

Open to all, the B-Heaven bar on the 5th floor invites locals and tourists alike for a sip and a chat with the city’s best vista as a backdrop. This avant-garde 4-star gem isn’t just for out-of-towners—it's Warsaw’s latest hotspot, blending industrial charm with modern luxury. Go for the view, stay for the vibe.

15 BURGER TIME!

Summer's gonna be a smash, and Smashny Burger is serving up the winning recipe! Their name's a playful nod to the Polish word for "delicious," and one bite will confirm it. Ditch the grill, let the delivery crew be your heroes, and fuel your summer with a juicy burger, crispy (cheese!) fries, and a refreshing drink from Smashny!

BRIDGING WARSAW'S FUTURE

Since opening in March, the new pedestrian bridge over the Wisła, connecting Karowa Street in Powiśle with Okrzei Street in Praga, has seen over a million crossings. Crafted by Budimex for PLN 120 million, it’s praised by Mayor Trzaskowski as "a beautiful structure and a new landmark of Warsaw." This summer, it’s the must-see spot for photographers, visitors, and Varsovians eager to witness the latest change in Warsaw's ever-evolving cityscape.

19

CULINARY OASIS

The name itself evokes a metaphor—a fortified stronghold of culinary prowess, set in a lush garden bursting with seasonal delights. Picture yourself lounging with a glass of their divine lemonade, soaking in the greenery. Yet, to simply sip and sit would be to miss out on a symphony of flavors orchestrated by a truly professional kitchen.

Start with their beef tartare, a revelation in simplicity and elegance. The velvety texture of the beef, crowned with a cloud of Grana Padano and a dollop of roasted garlic mayo, is a dish that sings of summer. Pair this with side dishes like padrón peppers and green asparagus, and you’ll taste the very essence of the season.

Their schnitzel, with the bone left in for added flavor, is a testament to their skill. Each bite, enhanced with a smear of crème fraîche, is a decadent delight. Their fries, crisp and golden, are so good they could stand alone as a dish.

For pasta lovers, the paccheri is a must-try. These tube-like slices of heaven come slathered in a vibrant pesto sauce with a sprinkling of hazelnuts, adding a nutty depth that elevates the dish.

The scene from The Menu where Anya Taylor-Joy orders a simple burger from a high-end kitchen comes to mind. It’s in the quality and execution of these seemingly simple dishes that Gardens by Fort – in Fort Mokotów truly shines. You’ll find yourself wanting to personally thank the culinary team after every bite.

And if you’re not concerned about fitting into your bikini or swimsuit, the salted caramel tart and crème brûlée are simply irresistible. These desserts are the epitome of indulgence, a sweet finale to a meal that feels like a summer dream.

In short, Gardens by Fort – in Fort Mokotów is not just a restaurant; it’s a summer destination, a place where the art of cooking meets the beauty of the garden. Don’t miss it.

A POLISH MUST

Stepping into Oma is like entering Babcia's house for a holiday—a warm embrace of Polish tradition with a modern flair. Oma, named after the chef's grandmother, exudes Oma-goodness. Nestled in Powiśle, it charms with its vintage Polish decor and fresh flowers. The menu offers classic dishes with a twist: schabowy topped with Parmesan and zupa pomidorowa with garlic. Desserts like knedelki—a cottage cheese dumpling with apples and orange peel—are irresistible. The thoughtful vintage design and caricatures of Oma on the servers' shirts add a personal touch. Make a reservation to avoid heartbreak, as Oma’s popularity often leads to a full house. Dive into this cozy haven and savor the best of Polish summer cuisine, where every bite feels like a warm hug from Babcia herself.

PIZZA, PIZZA

Detroit, not Chicago — there's a distinct difference when it comes to pizza, and Kwadratowy Pies has brought it to Warsaw with flair. Their square-shaped pizzas boast a crispy outside and a soft inside, especially noteworthy with the stuffed Bolognese pizza. It's a friendly, cozy spot where indecision is solved by mixing and matching pizzas. Don't hesitate to try the Hawaiian — I dare say, it's worth it!

Does Warsaw need another Neapolitan pizza place, one may ask? The answer is a resounding yes when you bite into a pizza topped with burrata at Sole! The interiors are modern, adorned with touches of color akin to hipster novelty socks in white tennis shoes. Attention to detail in pizza-making sets Sole apart as a formidable Neapolitan contender, and their tiramisu is a sweet indulgence that would make even Iga Swiatek put down her tennis racket.

WINE & DINE

Kontakt

Sandomierska 13

Weaknesses do not exist in Kontakt, and if they do, they have yet to be formally identified by any who visit. Looking glorious in its deep shades of blue, its look is complemented by a 400-strong wine list slanted towards natural, bio-dynamic and organic wines. The five-star experience is aided by wonderful food.

LOCAL WINES

Brać

Zgoda 3 & Sierakowskiego 4A

Resistant as traditionalists may be to the very notion of Polish wine, Brać have made it their mission to showcase its unknown quality. Presenting on-edge sips from niche domestic producers (including collabs with the Funky Fluid craft brewery!), all this is done in a stylish space that feels good to be in. From 2023, this was our favourite wine-related find!

NATURAL WINE

Rascal

Moliera 6

Formerly a canteen for ballet dancers, this address now holds the largest bar in Europe specializing in natural wines – you weren’t expecting that! Entered past a lavish drape, this cool space has a suitably adventurous choice of rebel wines.

their own house beers. Prewar floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. For something quieter, take your pint next door to their sister bar, Jabeerwocky Junior.

THE HEART OF POLSKI CRAFT

Kufle i Kapsle

Nowogrodzka 25

Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the brick interiors are thick with noise, clamour and the reassuring smells of last year’s party. On colder nights, make your way to the back to discover an intimate space sprinkled with vintage armchairs and wonky old lamps set at a natural tilt. The beers are among the most radical in Warsaw.

CUTTING EDGE CRAFT

Hopito Chmielna

Chmielna 24

Opened last year as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more mature in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own crazy brews.

OLD TOWN PINTS

Same Krafty & Same Krafty Vis-à-vis

Nowomiejska 10

Jammed between the Barbican gateway and the Rynek, Same Krafty’s pair of Old Town drinkeries face opposite each other to offer their own mini-pub crawl. Appearing as raucous and rugged tavern-like bars, the experimental craft beers are a league ahead of the mainstream fizz peddled by

the other nearby bars.

FRIDAY HIT

Grace Drink Bar

Krucza 16/22

Named in honor of Grace Jones, the choice of hero says much about a place that devotes itself to celebrating the glam excess of 80s New York. Rooms include one that’s all bordello style colors and velvety finishes, and another that’s high on plush purple, glass and mirrors. Fueling the party, are classic cocktails, kamikaze shots and kitschy yesteryear hits.

CREATIVE COCKTAILS

Ave Pegaz

Piłsudskiego 9

Inside a lively interior that doesn’t take itself too seriously (check the ‘ceiling garden’), swivel about to gawk at a mighty collection of corkscrews and drinking implements. In this alchemist’s workshop find yourself enjoying some of the most creative cocktails in Warsaw.

COCKTAIL PORN

VHS

Poznańska 7

The shoe box sized VHS pays tribute to the 80s and 90s and is a model for good times –boasting a flamingo and pictures of Mr T., the toilet says it all. The drinks are among the wackiest in Warsaw, and they’re as fun to drink as they are to photograph.

RETRO HIP

Paloma Inn

Poznańska 21

Inspired by The Jetsons, the moon landings and the atom, Paloma Inn is a groovy blast of lunar lines, pea green color tones and furnishings and fittings that are retro-fu-

turistic. The experience is compounded by easy listening muzak, 70s menu faves like fondue and mega fun cocktails.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Beirut & Kraken

Poznańska 12

Somewhere, amid all the junk relating to the Lebanese conflict (sandbags, ammo boxes…), you’ll find the spirit of Poznańska contained within this long, skinny bar. As fashionable now as it was when it opened, finish the evening in their connecting venture, the Pirates of the Caribbean-style Kraken. Evenings dissolve into a wild, happy whirl of international voices.

INSIDER CLASSIC

Pardon To Tu

Al. Armii Ludowej 14

Despite the upgrade in surrounds, they’ve retained the left-field spirit of their old haunt thanks to flexi hours, a commitment to obscure sounds, and a well-spaced interior that references their former venue through its decadent color scheme and wall of favored musicians. The air of friendly, unforced cool is unmatched!

FOR THE MUSIC

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Known for his ear for upcoming talent, the owner Michał isn’t averse to taking risks in order to broaden Warsaw’s musical palate. The scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages give a vibe redolent of the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest, whilst inside it’s all creaking floorboards, mismatched furnishings and a clientele sourced from the local Academy of Fine Arts.

REBEL SOUNDS

Chmury / Hydrozagadka 11 Listopada 22

Set in a fleapit courtyard, it’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, but both are spiritually co-joined by a devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

Foton

Wilcza 9A

You know it’s been an epic weekend when you wake up on Monday knowing that Foton was involved. Conversation with strangers is natural after a few of Foton’s cocktails, and these are enjoyed to a cool backdrop made up of fleet of tumbling plants perched on steelframed contraptions.

CULT BAR

Gemba Chmielna 21

Adopting a loose-fitting PRL style, interiors include wood-paneled walls decorated with pics of Pope JPII, sporting pennants and framed artworks from the heyday of the Polish School of Poster. Tricked out with retro wallpaper, the perches by the bar are the most sought, but spillover seating can also be found in a winter garden enclosed by green and scarlet drapes – very David Lynch. Drinks include a broad-minded selection of craft beers, house cocktails and shots.

PRE-CLUB DRINKS

Bar Pacyfik

Hoża 61

Based upon the kind of Tijuana dive bar you’d have

happened upon during the Miami Vice era, Pacyfik is all candy floss pink and shades of teal: a raw-looking den that looks purposefully imperfect. Keeping the hip international crowd on the wrong side of drunk are kick-ass cocktails!

LATE NIGHTER

Republica San Escobar Poznańska 7

Lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

The Buzz

ESSENTIAL CHECK-IN

Fabryka Norblina

Żelazna 51/53

Without fail, the big winner of 2023 was Norblin — hell, we even saw Kieran Culkin walking through over summer! In terms of nightlife, winners include the elite MOXO and the craft-minded Uwaga. Packed in the evening, the atmosphere is squared out perfectly by the live music that frequently escapes from the Piano Bar. The Insider fave though remains Piano Bar, a place with fancy cocktails, a 12-foot chandelier and a crowd that errs from late 20s upwards.

STUDENT CARNAGE

Nowy Świat ‘Pavilions’

Nowy Świat 26

For the highest condensation of bars in the capital head to ‘the pavilions’, a collection of ramshackle drinking cabins, shot bars and sheesha lairs inside a tight grid of shadowy back alleys. Adding to the gentle sense of confusion comes the realization that so many bars look the same –accessed through clattery, barred doors, visitors walk into murk and chaos.

LIVE SPORTS

Shamrock Sports Bar

Krucza 51

At long last, Warsaw has the sports bar it deserves. Zapping in football, rugby and suchlike from around the world (but mainly Britain), this Irish-run spot is an offshoot of the atmospheric Shamrock Irish Pub on Zgoda. Though a lot smarter than its sister, the raucous sense of fun has carried over –as has the quality Guinness.

ALT. ENTERTAINMENT

Worek Kości

Bagatela 10

There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and that’s underlined by its collection of 400 replica skulls. Known for its burlesque nights, this passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre also has a busy roster of lectures dedicated to criminal profiling, forensics and serial killers. Oh, and the cocktails are good.

THE PRAGA VIBE

W Oparach W Absurdu

Ząbkowska 6

Craft beers lurk within the fridge, but for the seminal Absurdu experience order a tray of vodka before bulldozing through the crowds that gather to listen to Balkan rock and Afro-Latin bands. Somewhere, hidden deep beneath the creaking antiques and moth-eaten Persian rugs, you might be lucky to find a woodcarved bar.

NORTHERN NIGHTS

Havana

Słowackiego 16/18

Set on the first floor of a PRL era tower, the super cool interior offers up a coherent display of retro posters, luscious plants and light wood trimmings that are respectful of this space’s former life as a 1960s cafe. Perched among hip freelancers and theatre types learning their lines, sip away on trendy bio wines, adventurous lemonades, craft swigs or specialty coffee sourced from local roasters.

CLUB OF THE YEAR

K-Bar Powiśle

Leona Kruczkowskiego

Providing an alternative to the usual Smolna / Luzztro / Jasna 1 scene, the location inside one of the pillars that prop up

Poniatowskiego Bridge lends an ‘in the know’ frisson of adventure to your evening. Small, sweaty, raw and intimate, the industrial-style vibe is offset against oriental lanterns and the occasional Korean flag. Music-wise, and evenings promise everything from Italo-rave to techno trance.

UPMARKET CLUBBING

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Some would say that Sen enjoys its heyday in the summer when the rooftop terrace opens to afford views of the illuminated bridges that span the river. But even outside these months it’s long enjoyed a reputation as Warsaw’s premier super-lux club. High class cocktails and a stringent door policy have helped maintain their name as the principal destination for glam, catwalk excess.

Specialty coffee, bio wines, alternative soft drinks and craft beer make it a highly versatile place to finish in after a brisk autumn walk around the palace grounds.

Milk Bar

Dobra 42 (Powiśle), milkbarwarsaw.choiceqr.com

Milk Bar in Elektrownia Powiśle is a vibrant spot offering a unique twist on breakfast classics and imaginative cocktails. Dishes like BBQ chicken waffles and porridge with shrimps are crowd-pleasers. With desserts like Syrniki and indulgent cakes, the restaurant's warm, lively ambiance makes it a must-visit destination.

Andrea Camastra’s restaurant is a magical enclave in which time stands still. Mixing his famed scientific techniques with artisanal processes, his tasting menu is expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, as if it were an extension of his own firecracker character. Even the cheeseboard is a mind-bender – on our April visit, jaws hit the floor as this arrived in the liquified form of a pear consommé topped with warm gorgonzola foam. A bold, world-class adventure, no other restaurant offers such a ride – a second Michelin star seems guaranteed.

FORMAL & EXTRAORDINARY

Ossolińskich 3

Nineteenth century cornices and baroque drapes lend an enveloping sense of luxury to this A-Class space. Epoka’s menu is based on Polish cookbooks from different epochs, with the dishes reconstructed in a way that’s innovative, unexpected and a roller coaster of thrills. La Liste officially rank it among the world’s Top 100 Restaurants.

EXQUISITE

46

Winning our 2022 award last year for ‘Outstanding Achievement’, chef Jacek Grochowina’s enclave of class looks dashing with its monochrome colours and muted gunmetal shades, but it’s the food that has made it the place Warsaw heads to live the life of the 1%. Treasuring detail and finesse, Nolita demonstrates fine dining hasn’t died.

The exhibition "EUPHORIA. On Warsaw Club Scene Post-1989" at the Wola Museum of Warsaw, running from May 9 to December 15, 2024, offers a vivid exploration of Warsaw's club culture post1989. It highlights how clubs like Fugazi, Filtry, CDQ, and Piekarnia emerged amid the socio-political changes following the fall of communism, acting as cultural and social hubs rather than mere businesses.

The exhibition delves into the role of these venues in reflecting and influencing the broader cultural landscape. Clubs such as Fugazi and Filtry, which were short-lived yet impactful, symbolized the pioneering spirit and community feeling of the early 90s. These places were more

than just music venues—they fostered the development of independent culture, encompassing theatre, visual arts, and literature.

Le Madame and Chłodna 25, emerging in the early 2000s, extended this tradition by becoming spaces for social movements and non-governmental organizations, hosting diverse events and debates. The exhibition also covers the rise of hip-hop culture in Warsaw with clubs like Alfa and Paragraf 51 playing pivotal roles.

Konrad Schiller, the exhibition curator, emphasizes that "EUPHORIA" not only provides a retrospective of these clubs but also showcases their transient nature, capturing a unique era in Warsaw's history. Visitors can expect to see a range of artifacts, including photos, videos, and ephemeral prints like posters

and zines, many of which are on public display for the first time.

The exhibition is accompanied by a program of DJ sets, guided tours, and debates. Notable events include a special Night of Museums on May 18 and DJ sets inspired by the iconic Fugazi and Filtry clubs.

This vibrant gallery showcases a diverse array of paintings, blending abstract forms with figurative art, inviting visitors to explore the unexpected and find new meanings in each artwork.

in the intrinsic value of each work, allowing them to interact freely within the space, creating new dialogues and narratives with every viewer's perspective.

The gallery's monthly rotations ensure a dynamic experience for visitors, with each new display crafted from unconventional materials like paper, light, and clay. Art workshops and lectures are integral to the Exhibit Yourself!, experience, offering opportunities for both budding artists and seasoned creators to engage with different aspects of artistic practice. Workshops cover a range of techniques and themes, providing hands-on learning and creative inspiration. Meanwhile, lectures such as Colors of Mind delve into the psychological aspects of color, enriching visitors' understanding of art beyond its visual appeal.

MUSEUMS

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!

Warsaw’s rich history and cultural significance has left it with no shortage of museums to visit. Offering a well-rounded view of the city’s past and present, these are the seven you just shouldn’t miss…

FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM

The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. Okólnik 1, chopin. museum

MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM

A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and

rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul.

Piękna 28/34, mzprl.pl

MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl

NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org

POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul. Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl

LOOKING BACK

The Rebirth of Warsaw Begins

On July 3, 1947, the Sejm initiated the epic reconstruction of Warsaw, setting the stage for the city’s remarkable transformation from war-torn ruins to a vibrant capital

warsaw’s destruction began during the September Campaign and the siege, with German artillery and aviation killing 10,000 inhabitants and decimating 12% of the city's buildings. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943 and the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 further reduced the city to rubble. By January 1945, when the Red Army entered, 84% of Warsaw was in ruins.

Early in 1945, residents began returning to a city of lifeless ruins, with 72% of residential buildings and 90% of historic and industrial sites destroyed. The need to rebuild was clear, and on January 3, 1945, the National National Council resolved to restore Warsaw as Poland's capital.

Two visions emerged for the city's future. The “monument enthusiasts,” led by Prof. Jan Zachwatowicz, aimed to integrate historic monuments into the new urban fabric. In contrast, the “modernists,” influenced by Soviet ideals, saw an opportunity for a modern, socialist city. This ideological clash shaped Warsaw’s reconstruction, with BOS, the Office for the Reconstruction of the Capital, playing a central role until its dissolution in 1951.

The post-war effort transformed Warsaw, culminating in UNESCO’s 1980 recognition of the Old Town as a World Heritage site—a testament to the city’s resilient spirit. This July, the rebuilt Warsaw Old Town celebrates its 70th anniversary, a symbol of enduring heritage amidst relentless change.
