All Dogs should have a PIESEL

The Left party's platform for Poland's upcoming European Parliament elections features a novel proposal: the introduction of "PIESEL," a unique identification system akin to the human PESEL, but for dogs. Spearheaded by Co-chairman Robert Biedroń, this initiative aims to address the issue of stray and homeless dogs across the country. By assigning each canine companion a PIESEL, the party hopes to implement better tracking and care systems, ultimately improving animal welfare. This innovative approach underscores the Left's commitment to inclusive policies that prioritize the well-being of all members of society, including our four-legged friends.

10 Warsaw Insider | June 2024 Interview

Devil in the details

Marcin Dębski also known on Instagram as warsaw_freaky talks with the Insider about his passion for pre-war architecture

Tell us something about yourself.

My name is Marcin, and I have spent my entire life in Warsaw. I grew up in Lower Mokotów, near Łazienki Park, and now I reside in a 1930s building designed by the Syrkus family in Ochota. I hold a master's degree in journalism from the University of Warsaw. My interests include long-distance travel, Nirvana, painting, design, Asian cuisine, cycling, and retro Jordans.

You capture a lot of hidden beauty in pre-war buildings and vintage cars. What makes them so fascinating to you?

I'm fascinated by the beauty and quality of workmanship in both pre-war buildings and vintage cars. Their geometric shapes and the materials used give them a unique soul. I love the modernism of the 1930s, where design aimed to please the eye and serve functionality. Mies van der Rohe's principle, "less is more," resonates with me. I appreciate the times when construction was driven by functionality, simplicity, and beauty rather than money. Poland is home to many beautiful buildings that survived the war, and Warsaw, in particular, showcases a diverse

range of modernist architecture by avant-garde creators like Lucjan Korngold, Juliusz Żórawski, Bohdan Pniewski, and the Syrkus couple.

Many of your photos are taken inside beautiful pre-war buildings. How do you gain access?

This question often comes up! There are various methods. Sometimes, the door is open due to a broken lock, or someone lets me in without asking. Occasionally, I'll hold the door for someone exiting with their dog or groceries. At times, I enter with a courier or Uber driver. Most of these pre-war buildings in the city center house numerous offices of notaries, solicitors, and lawyers, where you can call and request access. Often, people are proud of their buildings and happy to share their history. They sometimes even invite me into their apartments. Of course, there are occasional unpleasant situations, but these are rare.

Do you plan your searches?

Sometimes, I note or remember addresses of interesting buildings that I couldn't enter at the time.

Interview

Often, I can tell from a distance if a building will be worth exploring. When traveling abroad or visiting other Polish cities, I research modernist architecture in advance, but spontaneous exploration is the most enjoyable. For instance, in Naples, I discovered a whole quarter of modernist residential buildings from Mussolini's era. However, for specific works like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Villa Tugendhat in Brno or the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, I made special trips.

What have you learned about architectural relationships by visiting these places?

I've learned that, as the saying goes, "they don't make them like they used to." Early architects designed with the intention of improving people's lives, focusing on how to illuminate corridors and staircases, and positioning buildings to maximize sunlight. Staircases, in particular, don't have to be boring and repetitive; they can be delightful and winding. Exploring the hidden wonders behind the doors of tenement houses, I've become fascinated by their history, the stories of their designers and residents, and the unique features that make each one special.

What are your favorite hidden gems in Warsaw? There are many, but some standout gems include:

• The tenement houses on Al. Przyjaciół, like "Pod Żaglem" by Juliusz Żórawski and Lucjan Korngold's tenement with an oval elevator shaft at the corner of Koszykowa and Al. Przyjaciół.

• Bohdan Pniewski's tenement on Maria Konopnicka Street.

•The villas of the Brukalski family on Niegolewskiego Street from 1928.

• The Ministry of National Education, designed by Zdzisław Mączęński with Art Deco interiors by Wojciech Jastrzębowski. During WWII, it housed the Gestapo but survived the Warsaw Uprising nearly intact.

• Saska Kępa, with its numerous gems of 1930s avant-garde architecture, perfect for hours of exploration.

If you could have any car and live in any building in Warsaw, what would they be?

I would choose the two-family villa designed by Bohdan Pniewski on Klonowa Street, which currently belongs to the Ministry of Defense. As for the car, I would love a 1974 Porsche Carrera 911.

“If I could have any car and live in any building in Warsaw, I would choose the two-family villa designed by Bohdan Pniewski on Klonowa Street...”

WARSAW'S CENTRAL PARK

Pole Mokotowskie Park Embraces Green Revival

The revitalization of Pole Mokotowskie Park has ushered in a refreshing wave of greenery and natural charm, transforming its landscape into a haven for both residents and local wildlife alike. A significant highlight of the renovation lies in the rejuvenation of the park's ponds, where a seamless blend

Park of the month

“Transforming Pole Mokotowskie into a green oasis, where nature and technology harmonize for the benefit of residents and wildlife alike...”

of nature and technology has taken root. Instead of vast expanses of concrete, the park now boasts a meticulously crafted water system adorned with reed plants, serving as both a visual spectacle and a sanctuary for indigenous fauna. Complemented by advanced water purification technology, this system ensures the preservation of a thriving ecosystem, while a closed water circulation setup in the main reservoir ensures year-round enjoyment for visitors.

Beyond the water's edge, the park's surroundings have undergone a remarkable makeover, offering visitors an enhanced experience. Wooden platforms and bridges now invite leisurely strolls, while comfortable seating areas beckon relaxation. The recycled concrete from the pond renovations finds new purpose in soundproofing embankments along Wawelska Street, adorned with lush grassy slopes.

Moreover, the park's verdant canopy has been enriched with a diverse array of trees, including silver and broad-leaved linden, gray poplar, common rowan, and sycamore maple, alongside numerous shrubs, perennials, and bulbs. From biocenotic to sensory gardens, the landscape teems with life, offering serene spaces for contemplation and exploration.

In addition to its natural splendor, the park now offers expanded recreational opportunities, catering to fitness enthusiasts and leisure seekers alike. A dedicated skateboarding zone, outdoor gym, and running path cater to active lifestyles, while tranquil spots amidst natural elements provide moments of repose. The inclusion of new seating areas, lanterns, and amenities further enhance the park's allure, ensuring a welcoming environment for all.

Not to be overlooked, the renovation project extends its embrace to the park's animal residents, with designated pet ponds and insect hotels serving as testament to its commitment to biodiversity.

Behind the scenes, the meticulous planning and execution of the renovation project were spearheaded by the WXCA studio, with Inmel overseeing construction under the watchful eye of the Greenery Board of the Capital City of Warsaw.

As a testament to collaborative efforts, the modernization of Pole Mokotowskie Park stands as a shining example of sustainable urban development, co-financed by the European Union as part of the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program 2014-2020, reflecting a harmonious blend of nature, technology, and community spirit.

Inside JAVA

We sit down with Nick Fitzwilliams, owner of JAVA CAFE SPECIALTY ROASTERS to discuss his commitment to high-quality, fresh roasted coffee and the art of crafting exceptional beverages.

Why should someone visit JAVA CAFE SPECIALTY ROASTERS and what can they expect?

Joy in your cup. All our drinks, sandwiches, and bakes are made from high-quality ingredients with zero compromise. The beans are fresh roasted and delivered straight from JAVA's roast room in the North of Warsaw. We have three single origin batch brews to choose from and three single origins for espresso, including decaf. You have a wide selection of very tasty dairy alternative drinks. Sandwiches and bakes are a challenge, but generally, our prices are kept as low as we can, given the high bar on quality so that everyone can enjoy. We are inclusive, not exclusive. We always have the latest single origin beans (fresh roasted) in 250/500/1000 gram bags for the coffee lovers who want delicious coffee for the office or home.

The JAVA CAFE is located at the entrance of Fabryka Norblin's BioBazar, where you will find a wide selection of mostly ecological products in a huge, beautiful red brick industrial hall. We are proud to work with the traders within BioBazar; this is the community we very much belong to.

Why are you so passionate about fresh roasted arabica coffee and specifically single origin specialty?

Single origin specialty coffee, when roasted expertly (it's complicated; each single origin has its own unique roast profile to unlock the optimum flavor), used fresh and brewed well, is a joyful taste experience bursting with rich notes and aromas. Everyone should have access to this experience, everywhere, any morning; it is a right! At JAVA, the micro-lot farmers are our heroes while they struggle to produce these

wonderful beans with inflation, skyrocketing production costs, and crop loss as a result of climate change. JAVA pays these farmers prices far above the current Fairtrade price for arabica. We do not do Fairtrade coffee; we do fairly traded coffee. Flavor profiles range from chocolate, nutty, and fruity/fruity floral. It is very similar to fine wine in many ways.

What is the crossover between your coffee offerings and other drinks?

We like to explore the boundaries of taste with new ingredients or cook up great recipes. For example, we import a cascara concentrate which we use in our drinks; cascara is the fleshy fruit around the coffee bean and has a very pleasing, unique taste. We have an espresso lemonade using a delicious fizzy drink made from Sicilian lemons, low in sugar. We have a roasted pistachio latte and a drink from sea buckthorn infusion (it's delicious and keeps the doctor away). We have nitro, both specialty coffee and SUKI Tea versions. We also make a matcha vanilla drink with a raspberry puree twist. To attract an evening crowd, we are launching a "dry" bar with mocktails. We have conjured up a delicious virgin espresso martini, a herbal G&T, and a drink containing yuzu and cucumber. Most of the ingredients, including the delicious cascara concentrate, can be found on our store www.javacoffee.pl. If you are a coffee lover, do take a look at our coffee subscription, catering to those who never want to run out of fresh roasted coffee.

From Chain to Craft

The Evolution of JAVA CAFE SPECIALTY ROASTERS

JAVA began roasting specialty coffee in 2001, at a time when locally fresh roasted, high-quality arabica was not available. JAVA started as a chain before the arrival of Starbucks, Coffee Heaven (now Costa), or Green Caffe Nero. In 2003, JAVA closed its cafes and shifted focus solely to providing independent cafes with freshly roasted, high-grade, delicious coffee. We were resource-constrained and too busy to adopt e-commerce; COVID forced our hand, and retail e-commerce is now a very important channel for JAVA.

In October 2013, we introduced the JAVA Pop Up concept, now called CAFE, to BioBazar situated in Fabryka Norblin before it was developed. It was a unique place surrounded by metal from a bygone era. The Pop Up served JAVA as our city center front desk to showcase our craft. We started with just 5 square meters, offering only beans and alternative batch brewing, without running water or heating, and with pigeons overhead making their presence felt in quite an unwelcome manner! We now have an eye-popping CAFE with all the latest equipment and delicious ingredients situated at the entrance to BioBazar close to Ul. Lucka.

CAPTURING CHANGE

In this exclusive interview, photographer Paweł Długokęcki (@keckiphotography) shares his insights on what makes Warsaw unique, his favorite spots to capture, and the evolution of his craft from mobile to drone photography. Learn how his images reflect the city’s ongoing transformation and why his lens is a witness to Warsaw’s dynamic changes.

“Warsaw is diverse, architecturally combining the old with the new. The city’s landscape changes quickly, making photographs a good witness to history...”

INSIDER: You've photographed many stunning cities abroad - how does Warsaw compare as a model? Is there anything that makes this city unique?

Compared to other European cities, Warsaw has nothing to be ashamed of. The capital is diverse, architecturally combining the old with the new. The panorama of Warsaw is changing dynamically, new buildings are being built, both office buildings and skyscrapers, as well as cultural and public use institutions. It is in a completely different place than it was 10 or 20 years ago, and certainly in another 20 years it will not be in the same place as it is now. The landscape of the city shown in photographs quickly becomes obsolete, and the photographs become a good witness to history and evidence of the changes

taking place. This makes the city unique. What bothers me is the ubiquitous advertising, which, visually, certainly detracts from this city.

Do you have a favorite area of Warsaw to photograph - and why?

I like the center of the city, especially the high part of it, which adds variety to the skyline. Visible from afar, it serves as a signpost and reference point for other parts of the city. The center is also a mix of different architectural styles, with modern skyscrapers adjacent to historic buildings. These contrasts make a very attractive space for photographers.

What do you want people to think when looking at your images?

warsawinsider.pl 21

Photography

I would like viewers to appreciate the composition, colors or play of light in my photos. I would like them to see in my photos that they are not randomly taken, and that viewers stop for more than just a moment. It's nice how photographs become an inspiration for others, and it makes me very happy when I witness this.

How has your photography developed over time?

I started my adventure with photography in 2017 and my photos were mainly taken with a mobile phone. It was mostly architecture photography in a minimalist edition. As the appetite comes with eating, then came the time for a professional camera. For the past few years, however, as a drone owner, I have been devoting most of my time to photography presenting a bird's-eye perspective. My photographs mainly cover urban (with the definite predominance of photos of Warsaw and the Tricity) and natural landscapes (mainly the Baltic coast and Masuria lake district). Despite the increasing number of drone owners and, consequently, the growing number of drone photos appearing on the web, the perspective of high-altitude photography still seems to be very attractive. One can see much more than from a sidewalk perspective.

From a photography point of view, what is the most valuable lesson you have learned?

Apart from the elements such as light or composition, from my point of view, the moment in which the photo was taken is very important. How many times have we witnessed some unusual situation? A beautiful sunrise or sunset? Something that captivated us? Having a camera in such moments sounds like a good idea. Dedication and planning are crucial in photography, especially in drone photography. Checking the weather conditions, the position of the sun, the possibility of flying in a particular location, etc. will definitely help you take a better photo. The more factors we analyze, the greater the chance that the photograph will be successful. That's how the photo awarded in the Varsovians' poll as the best in 2023 came to be. It has been planned for a long time and taking this single shot required loads of patience while waiting for the right date with cloudless sky during sunset.

POLISH TRADITION REIMAGINED

With expertly crafted dishes by Chef Rafał Pędowski and a focus on seasonal ingredients, The EATERY trad. sets a new benchmark for Polish cuisine

warsawinsider.pl 25 PHOTOGRAPHS BY KEVIN DEMARIA

Review

When it comes to the frequently asked question about which is the best restaurant serving authentic Polish cuisine, the answer often changes as new places open up and raise the bar. Last year, The EATERY shone brightly in this regard when they opened in the backyard of Plac Konstytucji, offering modern flavors expertly prepared by seasoned chef Rafał Pędowski. It has been a big year for The EATERY, winning a spot among the Top 50 Restaurateurs in Poland 2024 by Forbes and opening a new sister restaurant, just a year after their last one in the city center.

INSIDE

The EATERY trad. in Powiśle moves in on the ground floor of a characteristic 1960's 13 story hotel with the letters ZNP on the roof, standing for the Polish Teachers' Union, which has its headquarters nearby. The interiors are minimally sophisticated as their other restaurant, designed by co-owner Agnieszka Dubas. The original pastry colored stone walls and black and white marble floor harmonize with elegance touches of transparent glass and avant garde style line art murals making the whole building a little bit more Mies van der Rohe. There is a combiniation of feeling like you are in a wonderful cave supplied with a glowing back light from one side to a stage like over-sized window gracing the cavernous tall ceiling space on the other. A ribbon of sleek modern furniture line the outside setting the stage for summer, as the view of the park with the bustling Wisła behind it creates the perfect vibe to sit, talk, and sip The EATERY trad.'s sensational cocktails.

ON THE MENU

The EATERY trad.'s menu offers both small and large portion options, perfect for tasting and sharing dishes. Ordering a schabowy should the the first choice, but the hard decision is whether to share or keep it all to yourself. It is well prepared with a delicate, yet perfectly crisp exterior and the tenderest of pork inside. soon while the wild garlic is still available and made into a sauce. It is intensely flavorful, perfect for dipping potatoes as well as smothering the asparagus it is served with. If you miss it, no worries; there are plenty more delectable things to choose from, like the pyzy dumplings with pork and beef inside, topped with bacon bits. Served four on a plate, they resemble little steamed buns that are soft to bite into, revealing a juicy meaty core. This dish pairs perfectly with their Plum Cocktail, which combines sweetness from their own marinated plums and smoky top shelf whiskey.

Another must-order from their menu is the kaszanka (blood sausage). The bed of crispy onions and broken-up kaszanka under an apple filled with walnuts, honey, and cinnamon sets a benchmark for this dish that you will always refer to. Staying true to the seasonal theme, their rhubarb szarlotka with marshmallowy beza inside is so amazing that I suggest ordering a slice to go and bringing it to your babcia to knock her socks off!

BIBI'S BLENDS

A fusion of inspiration and flavor

In May, the air was filled with the scent of Saska Kępa, and Bibi's embarked on a special journey. We introduced a new collaboration series, where we partnered with inspiring individuals to create something truly unique. At Bibi's Blends, we merged our expertise and creativity to craft smoothies that reflected the ideas and personalities of extraordinary people and beloved brands. Some names were instantly recognizable, while others offered exciting discoveries.

These collaborations resulted in limited-time smoothies, each boasting its own distinctiveness, vibrancy, and allure.

Mama Motz’s Tribute to Mother's Day

In May, Mama Motz combined flavors inspired by the Miami coast at sunset. Her smoothie featured a delightful mix of raspberry, mango, carrot, turmeric, and ginger.

Customers had the chance to enjoy Mama Motz's creation throughout May at Bibi's. And what better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than by treating your mom to a delightful smoothie and sharing in the taste of a sunset together?

THE FARM'S FARM-TO-TABLE JOURNEY

Discover the ethos driving The Farm's unique farm-to-table approach, as co-owner Filip Weka shares insights into sustainable farming, seasonal menu planning, and the art of preserving flavors for year-round delight.

Tell us about the inception of your restaurant. What inspired you to start sourcing produce and meat from your own farm in Mazury?

I always wanted to open a unique place on the map of Warsaw, where restaurant guests could try tasty dishes prepared from quality products. We believe that taste comes from nature, so we give special attention to where we source each ingredient from. I wanted to make sure that the products we would use were organic - running your own farm gives you this opportunity.

30 Warsaw Insider | June 2024

How would you describe the philosophy behind your farm-to-table approach?

It is a presentation and examination of individual stages of the product journey. Starting from animal breeding, providing them appropriate conditions, and ending with obtaining a quality product. I think that this approach is important for many of us because the demand for quality meat and quality food is growing as a result of increasing consumer awareness.

Can you elaborate on the values and principles that guide your farming and culinary practices?

In farming practices, I am mainly guided by ensuring appropriate living conditions for animals - giving them access to natural feed, clean water, and fresh air, which has a very positive impact on their growth. When it comes to culinary practices, it should be simply tasty and healthy, that's exactly how we do it at The Farm.

What sustainable farming techniques do you use on your farm in Mazury?

Sustainable farming is supposed to be environmentally friendly. That's why we do not use harmful plant protection chemicals, antibiotics, artificial fertilizers, or herbicides, such as glyphosate. We use cattle-produced fertilizer, cow's manure. We sequester more carbon dioxide (CO2) into the fields thanks to the careful management of our Aberdeen Angus cattle, replicating the thousand-year-old pattern of ruminants migrating, grazing, and fertilizing the soil. Biodiversity is also essential. Unlike monocrop agriculture, our farm is teeming with life. Mighty bees, rodents, insects, foxes, European bison, wolves, and even lynxes call this area of Poland their home!

Can you share some challenges you’ve faced in maintaining a farm and how you’ve overcome them?

Running a farm is really hard work. Every day is different here. It was definitely a challenge to control such a large number of animals and the farm area, which is 575 hectares. At the beginning, there were fears that did not affect me negatively; on the contrary - they began to motivate me to act. I was inspired by cattle farming and knowledge about meat in England, and I wanted to have my own farm in Poland with Aberdeen Angus cattle. I have trusted employees who help me in running the farm and who believe in the same values as me, so I can entrust them with the care of the farm.

How does the seasonal availability of produce influence your menu planning?

This is a very important aspect in menu planning. Seasonality is very inspiring during creating a new menu card. In our restaurant, The Farm, we follow the seasonal calendar, but we also source products from nature, including elderberry and wild rose. Seasonality also has a positive impact on the opinion of our guests because they can try something new from the menu.

How do you handle the variability of seasonal produce in terms of ensuring a consistent menu offering?

We pickle and ferment a lot of our products so that we can enjoy them all year round, not just during the season. This technique gives us freedom and greater possibilities during creating dishes. We could say that we have spring locked in jars all year round.

Grilling Passion Ignited

How did your collaboration with Weber come about, and what drew you to their grills?

Living near Weber's headquarters in Warsaw, I had the opportunity to explore their range of grills firsthand. Initially, I was under the impression that Weber solely offered large gas grills, but upon closer inspection, I

discovered the timeless appeal of their charcoal grills, particularly the classic model that captured my heart.

Can you share your experience with your first Weber grill, the Master Touch charcoal grill?

The Weber Master Touch charcoal grill became my first purchase

and an integral part of my grilling journey. Its classic design and unchanging functionality resonated with me, providing immense pleasure and satisfaction in the grilling process. What techniques or accessories do you find most essential when using a charcoal grill?

One indispensable accessory for charcoal grilling is the chimney starter. Gone are the days of laboriously lighting charcoal with newspaper and gasoline. With the chimney starter, I can efficiently ignite charcoal in just 15 minutes, allowing ample time to prepare ingredients for grilling.

As Weber's head grill master, what knowledge or tips do you enjoy sharing with grilling enthusiasts?

One of my favorite techniques to impart is the efficient use of a chimney starter to quickly and evenly ignite charcoal. This method not only saves time but also ensures consistent heat distribution for optimal grilling results.

Beyond kitchen staples, discover fun novelties like K-pop merchandise. Indulge in bulgogi or crispy Korean Fried Chicken, enjoying a lively fusion of food, atmosphere, and shopping.

Weaknesses do not exist in Kontakt, and if they do, they have yet to be formally identified by any who visit. Looking glorious in its deep shades of blue, its look is complemented by a 400-strong wine list slanted towards natural, bio-dynamic and organic wines. The five-star experience is aided by wonderful food.

LOCAL WINES

Brać

Zgoda 3 & Sierakowskiego 4A

Resistant as traditionalists may be to the very notion of Polish wine, Brać have made it their mission to showcase its unknown quality. Presenting on-edge sips from niche domestic producers (including collabs with the Funky Fluid craft brewery!), all this is done in a stylish space that feels good to be in. From 2023, this was our favourite wine-related find!

NATURAL WINE

their own house beers. Prewar floors and the welcome smell of spillage give it a great atmosphere that becomes a boisterous babble of international voices the later it gets. For something quieter, take your pint next door to their sister bar, Jabeerwocky Junior.

THE HEART OF POLSKI CRAFT

Kufle i Kapsle

Nowogrodzka 25

Respectful of the building’s pre-war heritage, the brick interiors are thick with noise, clamour and the reassuring smells of last year’s party. On colder nights, make your way to the back to discover an intimate space sprinkled with vintage armchairs and wonky old lamps set at a natural tilt. The beers are among the most radical in Warsaw.

CUTTING EDGE CRAFT

Hopito Chmielna

Chmielna 24

Opened last year as the younger sister of Hopito’s Żurawia venture, this branch feels a little more mature in its target audience, though every bit as fun in its beer selection - radicalized drinkers will love Hopito’s own crazy brews.

OLD TOWN PINTS

Same Krafty & Same Krafty Vis-à-vis

Nowomiejska 10

Jammed between the Barbican gateway and the Rynek, Same Krafty’s pair of Old Town drinkeries face opposite each other to offer their own mini-pub crawl. Appearing as raucous and rugged tavern-like bars, the experimental craft beers are a league ahead of the mainstream fizz peddled by

the other nearby bars.

FRIDAY HIT

Grace Drink Bar

Krucza 16/22

Named in honour of Grace Jones, the choice of hero says much about a place that devotes itself to celebrating the glam excess of 80s New York. Rooms include one that’s all bordello style colours and velvety finishes, and another that’s high on plush purple, glass and mirrors. Fuelling the party, are classic cocktails, kamikaze shots and kitschy yesteryear hits.

CREATIVE COCKTAILS

Ave Pegaz

Piłsudskiego 9

Inside a lively interior that doesn’t take itself too seriously (check the ‘ceiling garden’), swivel about to gawk at a mighty collection of corkscrews and drinking implements. In this alchemist’s workshop find yourself enjoying some of the most creative cocktails in Warsaw.

COCKTAIL PORN

VHS

Poznańska 7

The shoebox sized VHS pays tribute to the 80s and 90s and is a model for good times –boasting a flamingo and pictures of Mr T., the toilet says it all. The drinks are among the wackiest in Warsaw, and they’re as fun to drink as they are to photograph.

RETRO HIP

Paloma Inn

Poznańska 21

Inspired by The Jetsons, the moon landings and the atom, Paloma Inn is a groovy blast of lunar lines, pea green colour tones and furnishings and fittings that are retro-fu-

turistic. The experience is compounded by easy listening muzak, 70s menu faves like fondue and mega fun cocktails.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Beirut & Kraken

Poznańska 12

Somewhere, amid all the junk relating to the Lebanese conflict (sandbags, ammo boxes…), you’ll find the spirit of Poznańska contained within this long, skinny bar. As fashionable now as it was when it opened, finish the evening in their connecting venture, the Pirates of the Caribbean-style Kraken. Evenings dissolve into a wild, happy whirl of international voices.

INSIDER CLASSIC

Pardon To Tu

Al. Armii Ludowej 14

Despite the upgrade in surrounds, they’ve retained the leftfield spirit of their old haunt thanks to flexi hours, a commitment to obscure sounds, and a well-spaced interior that references their former venue through its decadent colour scheme and wall of favoured musicians. The air of friendly, unforced cool is unmatched!

FOR THE MUSIC

Młodsza Siostra

Dobra 14/16

Known for his ear for upcoming talent, the owner Michał isn’t averse to taking risks in order to broaden Warsaw’s musical palate. The scrappy backdrop of bike repair garages give a vibe redolent of the shadowy courtyards of Berlin and Budapest, whilst inside it’s all creaking floorboards, mismatched furnishings and a clientele sourced from the local Academy of Fine Arts.

40 Warsaw Insider | June 2024

REBEL SOUNDS

Chmury / Hydrozagadka 11 Listopada 22

Set in a fleapit courtyard, it’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, but both are spiritually cojoined by a devotion to eclectic live music. Tight and crowded, it’s a place where audience and band become one, feeding off each other to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

Foton

Wilcza 9A

You know it’s been an epic weekend when you wake up on Monday knowing that Foton was involved. Conversation with strangers is natural after a few of Foton’s cocktails, and these are enjoyed to a cool backdrop made up of fleet of tumbling plants perched on steel-framed irrigational contraptions.

CULT BAR

Gemba Chmielna 21

Adopting a loose-fitting PRL style, interiors include wood-paneled walls decorated with pics of Pope JPII, sporting pennants and framed artworks from the heyday of the Polish School of Poster. Tricked out with retro wallpaper, the perches by the bar are the most sought, but spillover seating can also be found in a winter garden enclosed by green and scarlet drapes – very David Lynch. Drinks include a broad-minded selection of craft beers, house cocktails and shots.

PRE-CLUB DRINKS

Bar Pacyfik

Hoża 61

Based upon the kind of Tijuana dive bar you’d have

happened upon during the Miami Vice era, Pacyfik is all candy floss pink and shades of teal: a raw-looking den that looks purposefully imperfect. Keeping the hip international crowd on the wrong side of drunk are kick-ass cocktails!

LATE NIGHTER

Republica San Escobar Poznańska 7

Lacking airs and graces, it’s a place where fun rules the roost. Tiny in size, find an interior filled with corrugated iron sheets, zappy neons, chunky woods and bike pedals on the footrests. The fun-loving spirits is irresistible, and the tight dimensions mean the party often spills onto the terrace outside.

ESSENTIAL CHECK-IN

Fabryka Norblina

Żelazna 51/53

Without fail, the big winner of 2023 was Norblin – hell, we even saw Kieran Culkin walking through over summer! In terms of nightlife, winners include the elite MOXO and the craft-minded Uwaga. Packed in the evening, the atmosphere is squared out perfectly by the live music that frequently escapes from the Piano Bar. The Insider fave though remains Piano Bar, a place with fancy cocktails, a 12-foot chandelier and a crowd that errs from late 20s upwards.

STUDENT CARNAGE

Nowy Świat ‘Pavilions’

Nowy Świat 26

For the highest condensation of bars in the capital head to ‘the pavilions’, a collection of ramshackle drinking cabins, shot bars and sheesha lairs inside a tight grid of shadowy back alleys. Adding to the gentle sense of confusion comes the realization that so many bars look the same –accessed through clattery, barred doors, visitors walk into murk and chaos.

LIVE SPORTS

Shamrock Sports Bar

Krucza 51

At long last, Warsaw has the sports bar it deserves. Zapping in football, rugby and suchlike from around the world (but mainly Britain), this Irish-run spot is an offshoot of the atmospheric Shamrock Irish Pub on Zgoda. Though a lot smarter than its sister, the raucous sense of fun has carried over –as has the quality Guinness.

ALT. ENTERTAINMENT

Worek Kości

Bagatela 10

There is nothing ordinary about Worek Kości and that’s underlined by its collection of 400 replica skulls. Known for its burlesque nights, this passionate celebration of the beautiful and bizarre also has a busy roster of lectures dedicated to criminal profiling, forensics and serial killers. Oh, and the cocktails are good.

THE PRAGA VIBE

W Oparach W Absurdu

Ząbkowska 6

Craft beers lurk within the fridge, but for the seminal Absurdu experience order a tray of vodka before bulldozing through the crowds that gather to listen to Balkan rock and Afro-Latin bands. Somewhere, hidden deep beneath the creaking antiques and moth-eaten Persian rugs, you might be lucky to find a woodcarved bar.

NORTHERN NIGHTS

Havana

Słowackiego 16/18

Set on the first floor of a PRL era tower, the super cool interior offers up a coherent display of retro posters, luscious plants and light wood trimmings that are respectful of this space’s former life as a 1960s cafe. Perched among hip freelancers and theatre types learning their lines, sip away on trendy bio wines, adventurous lemonades, craft swigs or specialty coffee sourced from local roasters.

CLUB OF THE YEAR

K-Bar Powiśle

Leona Kruczkowskiego

Providing an alternative to the usual Smolna / Luzztro / Jasna 1 scene, the location inside one of the pillars that prop up

Poniatowskiego Bridge lends an ‘in the know’ frisson of adventure to your evening. Small, sweaty, raw and intimate, the industrial-style vibe is offset against oriental lanterns and the occasional Korean flag. Music-wise, and evenings promise everything from Italo-rave to techno trance.

UPMARKET CLUBBING

Sen

Wioślarska 6

Some would say that Sen enjoys its heyday in the summer when the rooftop terrace opens to afford views of the illuminated bridges that span the river. But even outside these months it’s long enjoyed a reputation as Warsaw’s premier super-lux club. High class cocktails and a stringent door policy have helped maintain their name as the principal destination for glam, catwalk excess.

SHOW TIME!

Chaton Foksal 19

Chaton is where the celebs and top-earners gather to enjoy world class stage performers prance about whilst revelling in the bosom of refined luxury.

DESTINATION COFFEE

Café Pląs

Puławska 113A (Królikarnia)

Set inside the Króliarnia palace, it’s laidback and artsy-cool, something aided by the strategically placed plants, chillout beats and rare-find art books placed reverentially on the shelves. Specialty coffee, bio wines, alternative soft drinks and craft beer make it a highly versatile place to finish in after a brisk autumn walk around the palace grounds.

THE MICHELIN STAR

Pl. Trzech Krzyży 10/14

Andrea Camastra’s restaurant is a magical enclave in which time stands still. Mixing his famed scientific techniques with artisanal processes, his tasting menu is expressive in its aesthetics and flavour, as if it were an extension of his own firecracker character. Even the cheeseboard is a mind-bender – on our April visit, jaws hit the floor as this arrived in the liquified form of a pear consommé topped with warm gorgonzola foam. A bold, world-class adventure, no other restaurant offers such a ride – a second Michelin star seems guaranteed.

The interior is a jumble of exposed pipes, flurries of greenery, hardwood floors, recycled furnishings and colourful Boho bits and bobs. Menu-wise, the food lights the soul. But more

than just celebrating the power of local produce, there’s a refinement at play that speaks of a kitchen team that aims for magnificence. In October, that meant pumpkin with goat milk feta and ‘golden raisins’, and a star turn from a beef rib with pickled plums and a pair of steamed buns.

Festooned with potted shrubs, the outdoor wooden deck is one of Saska’s finest outdoor check-ins. Resembling the scales of a fish, Tuna’s core decorative element are 18,000 tuna cans that sheathe the walls. Smartly appointed in dark metallic colours, visit for an exhilarating menu that includes salmon jerky, tuna sausages, an elaborately reconstructed dorada tail and the best-selling chili con tuna. It’s an ecstasy of tastes.

With Argentine chef Martin Gimenez Castro injecting his passion and personality into the venue, this is an address that punches through the greyness of everyday Warsaw. Trójka Kielichów

Stalowa 38 / 2

Is it a café? A restaurant? Wine bar? Cocktail den? The truth is, it’s all of these yet none. Initially completed in 1904 to serve as Warsaw’s primary source of electricity, Elektrownia’s blended approach includes an exclusive top floor beauty hall filled with cutting edge beauty solutions and a retail offer than tends to shirk the mainstream to instead slant in on contemporary Polish design, upscale vintage, niche brands and established local talent. The food and drink has also been a major plus, with most attention going to a food hall that appears in an energetic sea of neon.

Reopened in 2018 as a mixed-use project containing cultural sites, F&B outlets, A Class offices and loft-style apartments, no other investment has had a bigger impact on Praga’s overdue regeneration than Koneser. Culturally, it’s also done much thanks to the Polish Vodka Museum, the Museum of Fantastic Art and temporary exhibitions such as Banksy in 2021. For most though, the F&B lineup is the strongest attraction of all and this includes upmarket Indian from Bombaj Malasa, the casual eatery Spółdzielnia and the real feather in the cap, the Koneser Grill – a meat-centric venue of high sophistication.

Overall, the PGE Narodowy Go-Kart Track offers a thrilling experience for drivers of all ages and skill levels. With its modern facilities, commitment to safety, and variety of kart options, it's the perfect destination for anyone looking to satisfy their need for speed in Warsaw.

Tips for Go-Karting with Kids:

Start Slow: For children new to go-karting, it's essential to start slow and gradually build confidence. Begin with slower speeds and shorter sessions to help them get comfortable behind the wheel.

Safety First: Emphasize the importance of safety gear, including helmets and seatbelts, and ensure that children understand basic safety rules, such as staying seated while driving and keeping their hands on the wheel.

Professional Instruction: Consider enrolling your child in a go-kart school or hiring a professional instructor for individual lessons. Proper instruction can help children learn the fundamentals of driving and develop good habits from the start.

Patience and Encouragement: Go-karting can be challenging for beginners, so be patient and supportive as your child learns. Offer encouragement and praise for their efforts, regardless of their performance on the track.

Practice Makes Perfect: Like any skill, go-karting requires practice to improve. Encourage regular practice sessions and provide opportunities for your child to hone their skills and build confidence behind the wheel.

ence in Warsaw's city center.

Walking in for the first time, you might feel as if you're intruding into someone's living room through an open door. However, after speaking with co-owner Alicja, you realize this is part of their philosophy and name: Independent House.

The "Independent" part of their name is more about their choice of items that they collect independently, regardless of trends, from the secondary market, vintage, and past brand's collections. Alicja and her partner

Magdalena act more like curators of fiercely elegant and sophisticated items. Their love for big brands as Jil Sander, Celine, Yoshi Yamamoto, The Row and many more is evident in their inventory, with selected dresses displayed on the walls like art. The shop also features real art from young Polish artists, such as colorful abstractions by Małgorzata Widomska and organic sculptures resembling the human body by Magdalena Szmydtke.

While this setting might seem

intimidating to some, the shop caters to a select group who truly appreciate its offerings. Over the past 5 years, this discerning clientele has become a sort offamily that created a kind of society that visits this place regularly almost like an extended family visiting a realtive's home.

If you love having something less obvious in your wardrobe, are willing to invest in looking and feeling good, and appreciate owning timeless pieces, this is the place for you.

The building contractors are putting the finishing touches to its new wings. In September ‘24 the school opens 17 new classrooms, an Early Years Centre for 3-6 year olds, an Upper Primary building and a spacious sports hall with outdoor fields and pitches.

BSW joined International Schools Partnership (ISP) in January 2023, its first school in Poland. Since then, Akademeia High School in Wilanow has also joined the group and there is further growth planned. Being part of a global schools group provides many learning opportunities for BSW, its staff and its pupils.

Tom McGrath has been leading BSW since 2017 and he has over 25 years of leadership experience in international education in schools in Poland, Portugal and the Cayman Islands.

MUSEUMS

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!

Warsaw’s rich history and cultural significance has left it with no shortage of museums to visit. Offering a well-rounded view of the city’s past and present, these are the seven you just shouldn’t miss…

FRYDERYK CHOPIN MUSEUM

The 18th century Ostrogski Palace is the perfect foil for the ultra-modern content of this multi-sensory space. The personal items are captivating (his death mask, gifts from his muse, etc.), but the big victory here is the museum’s ability to suck visitors right back into the times of Chopin through the use of interactive sights and sounds. ul. Okólnik 1, chopin. museum

MUSEUM OF LIFE UNDER COMMUNISM

A deeply personal insight into the former system by allowing visitors to view what Communism meant to the everyday person. Here, rifle and

rummage through a room mockedup to resemble a typical household apartment, watch propaganda films, peer inside a phone box, paw at vintage keep-fit gear or covet the ladies fashions of the time. Detailed in its captions, witty in its presentation and comprehensive in its content, it is a place where normal items such as aftershave bottles, postcards, clothing and crude household appliances are allowed to shine on a totem and tell their own story. A haven of trinkets and collectibles, its small size belies its utter magic. ul.

Piękna 28/34, mzprl.pl

MUSEUM OF WARSAW

Reprised as a maze-like treasure filled trove glimmering with

curiosities, thousands of objects have been gathered here to detail the story of Warsaw in a non-linear style that can at times feel overwhelming. Peculiar souvenirs, scale models, old postcards and recovered works of art all combine with a mass of trivia to leave visitors boggled with knowledge. The vertiginous views of the Rynek below are worth the admission alone. Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42, muzeumwarszawy.pl

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Famed for its collection of Dutch and Flemish masters, it’s also the final word in Polish art, with all the greats represented – inc. Matejko, Witkiewicz and other such stars.

60 Warsaw Insider | June 2024

That’s reason enough for many, but for others the museum’s ace card was revealed at the end of 2017 with the opening of the Gallery of Polish Design. Offering a full 360 view of Polish 20th century applied arts, it’s an aesthetic joy featuring everything from iconic PRL era wall units and tulip chairs to kitschy toys and gizmos. Frankly, it’s a stunning museum that just keeps getting better – though delayed by covid, the start of the year saw the world class Gallery of Ancient Art added to the mix. Featuring 1,800 ancient relics, papyrus scrolls, Iranian golden masks and even an Egyptian mummy! Al. Jerozolimskie 3, mnw.art.pl

NEON MUSEUM

Playing a key role in the government’s attempts to fuse socialist ideology with consumerism, the campaign to ‘neon-ize’ Poland saw gloomy cities still bearing the scars of war boldly gleam once more under lights designed and produced by many of the leading

artisans of the time. Salvaged from the scrapheap (in many instances, literally), this museum was created by Ilona Karwinska and David Hill who inadvertently kickstarted a nationwide trend and reignited the country’s appetite for neon. Housing several dozen neons that once lit up Poland, these renovated signs make for Warsaw’s coolest attraction: Instagram them now! ul. Mińska 25 (Soho Factory), neonmuzeum.org

POLIN

Composed of eight galleries, this architectural marvel covers different stages of local Jewish history, from the middle ages to the present day. Highlights of this museum include a staggeringly beautiful replica of the ceiling of Gwoździec synagogue, and a ‘remake’ of a typical inter-war Jewish Warsaw street. That it was named the European Museum of the Year in 2016 such much for its ambitions to focus on more than the Holocaust alone. ul. Anielewicza 6, polin.pl

THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

If the throngs and sheer informational overload can often be daunting, it remains the most important museum in the capital, and quite arguably the country. Points of interest are rife and include a life-size replica of a B-24 Liberator plane as well as a claustrophobic ‘sewage tunnel’ through which visitors squeeze to get an idea of the kind of conditions combatants once faced. But it’s not the A-list sights that make the biggest impact, rather the smaller, highly personal curios: a pair of wedding bands forged from bullets; an Omega watch, it’s hands frozen at the same moment a bomb killed its owner; and a lucky cuddly mascot made from a German overcoat. Of course, the aftermath is also covered in heartrending detail and concludes with a 3D film that takes viewers swooping over the smoldering ruins of the capital. ul. Grzybowska 79, 1944.pl

CEPELIA PAVILION

Once in a state of ruin, this landmark from the 60s is getting a new lease on life

Built in the 1960s, the modernist Cepelia Pavilion, designed by Zygmunt Stępiński, is part of Warsaw’s “Eastern Wall” initiative and is known for its unique architectural design. Its light steel frame and glass facades

Empik Reinvents Warsaw's Iconic Cepelia Pavilion

Empik will open a flagship store in Warsaw’s Cepelia Pavilion by late 2024. The 1,300 sqm, three-story space will feature retail, a multimedia exhibition, reading room, and event space for artists, promoting cultural connections. The store, with city center views, embodies Empik’s commitment to cultural engagement, as noted by President Ewa Szmidt.

give the impression that the first floor is floating. The building’s revitalization is being conducted in collaboration with the Masovian Provincial Conservator of Monuments, ensuring that its unique elements are preserved, while also preparing it for its new role.

In 2019, there were plans to transform the pavilion into a McDonald’s restaurant, but this proposal was met with resistance from Professor Jakub Lewicki, the Masovian conservator, due to the extensive overhaul it would require. These plans were shelved, leading to the current project, which respects the building’s history while giving it new life.

The renovation plan, crafted by AMC studio and Bernatek Architekci, will restore the modernist lightness of the building, bringing back its distinctive glass walls, vegetation, and free-standing display cases. The structure and roof will be renovated, with the historical lighting, façade cladding, lamella windows, and decorative elements, including the blue ceramic cladding by Stanisław Kucharski, being reproduced with care.
