As I write this, I begin my eighth week as your new vice president of development for Valley Christian Schools after a long career in higher education and medical advancement. I can’t tell you how honored I am to be entrusted with such an important component of our outreach to you, the people whose generosity has done so much to advance the Quest for ExcellenceTM at Valley Christian. So, what have I learned these past weeks? We often talk about giving back as a way to bridge the “gap” between tuition and the actual cost of educating our students. While this is certainly true, it only tells part of the story. What’s more important is the tangible impact your gifts are having on the lives of our students. The fact is that God-inspired philanthropic acts are answering prayers in the VCS community, creating remarkable opportunities for our students, and paving the way to a secure future for our school.
Whether it be through your support for the Warrior Fund, participation in the Quest Ball, contributions to Youth with Promise, or gifts to support our teachers, your generosity is what binds us together as a community and makes it possible for our students to reach their full potential. This past year alone Valley Christian students: •
Received first place in the bonus round of the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE competition in Monaco after previously making history as the youngest finalists ever to compete in any XPRIZE competition.
•
Placed first in the Math League National Championships on May 18, 2019, held at the University of Missouri.
•
Won $25,000 in the World Vision Social Innovation Water Challenge to create innovative solutions to solve the problem of clean water access in the Philippines.
Beyond the kudos for these scholarly and extracurricular accomplishments, Warrior musicians, performers, and athletes received numerous awards for their achievements in national and international competitions that showcased their talent and drive for individual and team excellence. All of this was made possible through your faithful giving. As we look ahead to the start of the holiday season—with all the attendant demands on our time, attention, and affections—please know how much we appreciate the many ways you contribute, be it with your time, talent, or treasure. If you’re reading this, it means you’ve already made Valley Christian Schools a priority in deciding where and how to give. For that, we thank you for helping us Extend the Gift to create the impact we all want to see at Valley. All joy and blessings to you and your loved ones during this time of thanksgiving and onward to the Christmas season!
Extend the Gift Development Office Dwane Anderson Vice President of Development Valley Christian Schools
Letter from the President “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10) After 33 years at Valley Christian Schools, I wake up invigorated each and every day, excited to see how God will work in and through our students. Pursuing the Quest for ExcellenceTM is a passion I share with all of our faculty and staff. Witnessing our students’ discovery of the nature, character, and works of God is an experience second to none, and one that none of us take for granted. I am continuously grateful that generous members of our Valley Christian community partner with us each year to further our mission. The individuals highlighted throughout these pages make it possible to spread

the hope of Christian education throughout the Bay Area and beyond. In the 2018-2019 school year alone, 2740 students attended Valley Christian Schools. Of those, 390 were awarded Youth with Promise needsbased scholarships making it possible for them to attend VCS. Our influence did not stop at the boundaries of our campuses. Valley’s Junior University and Lighthouse Initiative (JULI) impacted students’ lives in four neighboring public schools through mentoring, academic tutoring, enrichment activities, and the implementation of our new Light, Life and Learning curriculum. Our ever-expanding Warriors Advancing the Lord’s
Kingdom (WALK) program saw over 200 students attend eight mission trips to areas including Mexico, India, Thailand, Chile, Haiti, and a local outreach incalculably affecting the lives of those they served. VCS is having an incredible impact on our students, and our students are Extending the Gift, not only throughout our community but around the world. I am so proud of them all!
we are fully committed to being “good stewards of God’s varied grace” by using your gifts for the betterment of not only our students but also those they influence now and in the future.
It is often said but bears repeating, our generous community helps the Valley Christian Schools’ faculty and staff prepare the next generation of “WARRIORS,” equipping students to become leaders who serve God, their families, and to positively impact their communities and the world.
Clifford E. Daugherty, EdD President Valley Christian Schools
In His Service,
As 1 Peter 4:10 states, “…each has received a gift.” I want to personally thank those that have taken their gifts, whether it be time, talent, or treasure, and extended it forward “to serve one another.” You can rest assured that at Valley Christian Schools,

WELCOME DWANE ANDERSON Vice President of Development
Valley Christian Schools (VCS) is pleased to introduce Dwane Anderson, who joined the VCS family in September as Vice President of Development. Dwane will oversee fundraising, donor stewardship, and alumni relations efforts, including management of the Warrior Fund. Dwane has been a professional fundraiser for over twenty years, from earlycareer positions at Johns Hopkins Medicine to his latest role as Associate Vice President of Development at San Jose State University. Before that, he served for thirteen years at Stanford Medical Center, most recently as Director of Development. He also led the development program at the University of San Diego School of Law. Elevating the Warrior Fund is an essential part of VCS fundraising. We are happy to welcome Dwane as he works to grow and sustain a culture of philanthropy in support of our students.
Quest Ball Recap On March 9, 2019, we held our Fifth Annual Quest Ball dinner and auction, benefiting students, teachers, and programs at Valley Christian Schools. Over 500 parents, Board members, faculty, and staff gathered at The Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose to mingle, dine, bid on auction items, and join in a celebration of all the things that make our K-12 school so special. When the curtain had closed, guests had pledged over $800,000 including over $350,000 for the Youth with Promise financial assistance program that relieves the burden of tuition costs for hundreds of qualified VCS students per year. YOUTH WITH
AMY & VICTO
F
resh from donning their cap and gowns, Valley Christian Schools (VCS) newest graduates, Amy Tran and Victoria Hoang are excited about their future. Friends since the first grade, Amy and Victoria will both be the first ones in their families to attend college. Over the summer, the graduates sat down with us to discuss their education and the things they attribute to their success. Both young ladies worked hard, having the support of their families, and each graduate is on a lifelong Quest for ExcellenceTM because of VCS’ Youth with Promise program. Valley Christian Schools: Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your family? Victoria Hoang: My name is Victoria Hoang and I am 18 years old and I have a little brother who is currently 14 years old. My parents immigrated here from Vietnam and have been here for over 30 years. I am proud to say that I am a firstgeneration student. I will be the first one in my family to attend college. My parents have worked extremely hard and instilled core values in me to be able to get me to this point. Amy Tran: My name is Amy Tran. In my family, I’m also first-generation. So that means I will be the first one in my family to attend college. My dad made it to third grade, and my mom finished middle school. They had to break off and help their families by going to work. They work really hard; my younger brother and I are so proud of them.

VCS: Tell us about your early education? AT: We went to Hellyer Elementary School. The environment at Hellyer was definitely a lot different than my experience here at VCS. There were a lot of students who weren’t motivated, they kind of didn’t care. Even at a young age, kids would get into fights. Or, they’d talk back to the teacher. I tried to surround myself with good people. As a kid I became involved with VCS on Thursdays after school. VCS’ community outreach class would come down and teach us instruments and different sports. I had a moment where I said, “Oh, I want to go to Valley. But, no, how would I do that?”
“I had a moment
where I said, “Oh, I want to go to
Valley. But, no, how would I do that?”
VCS: Tell us about your experience applying to Valley Christian High School (VCHS)? VH: In sixth grade, I decided to apply for a six-year, non-profit college prep program called Breakthrough Silicon Valley (BSV). BSV helps students with limited resources, throughout middle school and high school, towards success in rigorous academic courses and entry into college. With the help of BSV, I decided to apply to VCHS. I wanted to get in, but a part of me knew
PROMISE
RIA’S STORY that even if I did get accepted, I wouldn’t be able to afford the tuition. My family wanted to put that money towards my college education. When I saw that giant envelope in my mailbox, my heart started to race. It felt bittersweet knowing that I was accepted into one of the best schools in the area, yet I could not afford it. Little did I know that there was a big surprise in store for me. I was able to attend VCHS because of a program called Youth with Promise. AT: I was also in the BSV program and they encouraged everyone to apply to at least one private school. I remembered that I wanted to go to Valley since I was a kid. So I said, “Oh, why not?” So I applied and completed placement testing. One day after school, I got a letter that said that I was accepted. I was so excited. But deep down I knew I wouldn’t be able to go because the tuition was out of my family’s range. Then a couple weeks later, I got a call from the head of BSV. She asked me if I would be interested in going to Valley on a sponsorship as part of a program called Youth with Promise. I thought that was amazing, a dream come true and I said, “Yes!” VCS: Tell us about your time here at VCHS? VH: Going to VCHS was a dream. I remember walking on campus as a wide-eyed incoming freshman. I was in awe of how big the campus itself was. Everything was so beautiful, I felt like I was in one of those cheesy high school movies. It took some time for me to get used to, in the beginning, I had some difficulties adjusting. However, the staff was there for me. My counselor, Mr. Lewis, was especially great, talking to him gave me a sense of comfort. My teachers provided a safe environment for me to share my obstacles and gave me great advice. VCS: You both were able to serve at Hellyer Elementary School through VCS’ community outreach class. Tell me what is was like to be back on your former campus?
AT: Coming into Valley my freshman year, I was really disappointed that I couldn’t participate in the community outreach class until my junior year! Mrs. Nardi was our teacher and I remember she was there when Victoria and I were kids. Her husband would tell us Bible stories. When we started going to Hellyer it hit me that I used to be in the student’s shoes. I remembered that we didn’t have many opportunities to do extracurriculars. I loved being able to share what I have learned with the students. The whole experience really touched my heart. VCS: Congratulations, you both are college bound! Where will you be attending and what do you plan on pursuing? AT: I’m going to the University of Redlands. I am currently a health medicine and society major. VH: I’m going to the University of California, Irvine. I will be pursuing a bachelors in biology. With this, I plan on becoming a physician’s assistant. VCS: What does Quest for ExcellenceTM mean in your life? AT: It means that I will push myself to try new things and explore beyond my worldview so that I can understand and help others. VH: For me it means that by loving myself and taking pride in who I am I can find ways to help other people showcase their differences and love themselves too.
Thank you to all who continue to support the mission of Valley Christian Schools!

Making the Impossible
Possible In One Sentence
What if all you had to do to ensure that Valley Christian can be successful for years to come is to write a simple sentence? Sound impossible? Securing the future of those we serve really is as simple as one sentence. By including a gift to Valley Christian in your will, you can support our mission tomorrow without giving away any of your assets today. Including Valley Christian in your will is a popular gift to give because it is: Affordable. The actual giving of your gift occurs after your lifetime, so your current income is not affected. Flexible. Until your will goes into effect, you are free to alter your plans or change your mind. Versatile. You can give a specific item, a set amount of money, or a percentage of your estate. You can also make your gift contingent upon certain events. How a Gift in Your Will Works Your estate planning attorney can help you structure a gift so your loved ones will be taken care of first after you’re gone. He or she will include this sentence in a new will or living trust, or add it to existing documents through an amendment called a codicil. A popular option is to leave a percentage of what is left of your estate after other beneficiaries have received their share. This way, your gift remains proportionate to the size of your estate, no matter how it fluctuates. Is Including a Gift in Your Will Right for You? If you answer “yes” to any of the statements below, you’re ready to write Valley Christian into your life’s story through your will. •
•
You want the opportunity to guide decisions about the future ownership of your possessions and the legacy you leave behind. You want to make sure your support of our work is still available after your lifetime.
•
You want to balance your generosity to us with an assurance that loved ones are taken care of first.
•
You want the flexibility to change your mind about your gift at any time.
If you are ready to include a gift in your will, contact Dwane Anderson in the Extend the Gift Development Office by email: danderson@vsc.net or phone: (408) 362-7649 to get the suggested sentence to add to your will.
