As I prayed and prepared for this year’s keynote address to Valley Christian Schools, I felt compelled to encourage and remind our Board, administration, faculty, and staff of God’s abundant blessings and protection. I wanted to challenge our community to move past existing in survival mode and embrace the joy of thriving in Him. For this reason, we selected the theme verse “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power” (Ephesians 6:10) for the 2022-23 school year. Scripture tells us, “Greater is He that is in us, than He that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

Indeed, no one could have predicted the COVID pandemic that closed our schools beginning on March 13, 2020. That is, no one except God, who not only had the power to warn of the coming shaking but also powerfully protected VCS and helped our teachers successfully teach and our students excel during the challenging educational environment. During our October 2019 faculty spiritual retreat, John Delke (‘94), a VCS Junior High Bible teacher, shared a vision he believes came from God on August 9, 2019. Mr. Delke summarized his vision as follows: Going into Dr. Daugherty’s keynote, I knew the theme for the year was “Let’s Pray.” So, as the worship began, I took a moment to pray and asked God if he wanted to show me or tell me anything, and he gave me a vivid vision. In my vision, I saw Valley Christian Schools. I could see the whole school sitting on the hill, the quad, the gym, and the education buildings. The people in the quad seemed very content. Then, as the people were standing around talking, the hill started to shake. At first, people ignored it, but it kept shaking, and they became uneasy. Then I saw a giant hand slowly lifting the school off its foundation and away from the dangerous shaking. At the same time, a giant ear appeared out of the clouds to listen. While that happened, a transparent dome, like a snow globe, formed around the school as an invisible shield. I asked the Lord for the meaning of what I saw. He impressed on me that there is a shaking coming in the earthly and spiritual realms, but God will protect us by lifting us from harm’s way, putting a spiritual shield over us, and listening carefully to answer our prayers. John’s vision from the Lord confirms that God is not taken by surprise. He hears our prayers, goes before us, and even prepares the way for us to face the unknown. We can take heart and “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” What a privilege and honor to serve a loving and powerful heavenly Father who encourages us in His Word to “Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares about you” (1 Peter 5:7).

Principals’ Round Table

At all levels of Valley Christian Schools, student wellness has become more of a priority than ever before. As school leaders seek to steward their campuses through and out of the pandemic and its ensuing issues, they place more emphasis on social-emotional health. ___ Before the onset of the 2022-23 school year, Valley Vision sat down with the three Valley Christian principals – Dr. Gabe Guven at the elementary, Mr. Brian Clemons at the junior high, and Dr. Jennifer Silva Griffin at the high school – for a round-table discussion on the ways in which each campus seeks to address this critical concern. From your vantage point as principal, how have the last few years impacted VCS students with respect to their social-emotional health? Dr. Guven: As a principal (which, to be clear, is not a mental health professional or child psychologist), there have been trends that were surfacing prior to the pandemic. Increased adolescent screen time may be a factor. Students are entering school needing more support with “how to do school.” Social media usage has created an entirely new environment that most, if not all adults, did not have to navigate. Students need to be proactively taught how to navigate this environment. Other trends affecting students can be the erosion of family time and family structure, as well as the intense political division and tension we are living through. Oh yeah, and a global pandemic, too. Mr. Clemons: We realize students are searching for a path, who they are, and their purpose in life. Many of our students are struggling with depression and anxiety, which is why we had to be so intentional with our chapels and our messaging at the junior high. These students have so much on their plate, socially and emotionally. Dr. Silva Griffin: No living adult knows what it was like to be a teenager in high school living during a pandemic. That creates an unprecedented challenge for adults who are trying to understand the impacts of the last few years on our teens. Teens’ developmental interactions were impacted, they are looking to adults for more cues on how to navigate social settings – particularly in the area of play! It seems important for adults to remind and show teenagers that play and fun are essential parts of a healthy life, even in the midst of very real stress and anxiety. With respect to VCS’ mission statement, what role should social-emotional learning have in the quality Christian education we aspire to offer? Guven: The first thing that comes to mind is the focus on a “nurturing environment” – educational research has illustrated that students cannot learn if they do not feel safe in their learning environment. All expectations of students must filter through our commitment to nurture them.

q & a | PRINCIPALS’ ROUND TABLE Clemons: We realize there is an increasing need to designate resources toward faculty, staff, parent, and student training in mental health and wellness. We have a team of counselors that are present, along with our administrators and teachers, to provide additional support, whether academic or emotional. Griffin: We are relentlessly committed to loving others and loving God well. We also know that Jesus said, “Love others as you love yourself.” Gen Z is asking how much they are loved: by God, by others, by themselves. Meeting that need is our first and foremost commitment. How do you envision Valley Christian Schools continuing to address student wellness in new ways in the coming years? Guven: Among our efforts is the continuation of integrated social-emotional and character-focused education. We need to equip both parents and educators to help students thrive from the earliest ages. I know Valley Christian is committed to making sure that our own academic policies aren’t getting in the way of that. We really want to truly and meaningfully hone in on some of the practices that enhance student wellness: regular exercise, better nutrition, more sleep, and reduced screen time, to name a few. We hope to promote a healthy overall lifestyle, as opposed to only being reactive when issues arise. Clemons: Our goal is to continue to develop a built-in structure that would allow students the opportunity to find help and support in times of need. The Wellness Committee is working with a consultant to assess the current needs of our students and then formalize a plan to bring in resources and staffing that might be needed in a Wellness Center or similar safe places to allow students to process their emotions, learn practical tools, and realize their worth and how much they are loved.

Our goal is also to reduce the stigma surrounding emotional health as every human being needs to assess their level of overall wellness. Should a student face a time of crisis, we also have additional support from onsite therapists from the Christian Counseling Center. Griffin: We need to make this part of our culture. As we minister to students, we must follow Jesus’ example of compassionate, adaptive care. Our teachers, mentors, and coaches have an enormous role to play in this process. We are committed to a holistic approach that involves everyone; this is essential if we want to truly affect our students’ lives. We’ve started by partnering with the William Jessup University Psychology Department to understand how to do Christian psychology well. We plan to hold ASB and Student Life events grounded in social-emotional, experiential, and “play” learning. I am excited to announce that Mrs. Abra Martinez has taken on the new role of high school Wellness Counselor. She now has the necessary space to listen to students and help assess what we need to do in this arena. ___ To help build the environment envisioned by the principals and to help educate school stakeholders about wellness in the context of Christian education, Valley Christian Schools recently hired Mrs. Amy Hernandez as its first-ever K-12 Director of Wellness. As we work to support our students’ social and emotional health, the words from Proverbs 12:25 are wise, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”

A year ago, God brought me back to Valley Christian to serve as the Director of Alumni Ministries. As I traveled the country to meet and encourage our alums, I began seeing the impact of our community beyond “the Hill.”

student-led Bible studies cropping up on campus, alums pastoring churches in Colorado or China, parents raising the next generation with solid foundations rooted in faith, or a Sheik in the Middle East now reading through books of the Bible because of the impact of our community – God is working. I believe God wants to do more.

This year we launched an initiative to focus on building faith, character, and virtues for our students on their Quest for Excellence we call the Way of the Warrior. The Way of the Warrior is about four ethos:

I listened to your stories and hoped to gain insight, perspective, healing, and understanding as our community moves toward the future. As I walked onto campus every day from the yellow lot, I said the same prayer: “Lord, help me love the person in front of me the same way you do.” If you need a prayer that will change your life, this is it. It’s a dangerous prayer, changing attitudes, opinions, and making it impossible to stay the same. It’s a transformational prayer, a prayer turning every conversation into something sacred and filling every interaction with compassion. It creates enough pause to allow wisdom to interject. Ultimately, this prayer grew a vision in my heart for the whole Valley Christian community of K-12 students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and partnerships. For more than sixty years, Valley has impacted over 9,500 students and their families. VCS, like any other human organization, is flawed, but the people and leadership here strive toward a primary mission: to point people to Jesus. The Quest for Excellence is how we accomplish God’s unique call on our community, but God’s kingdom mission through Valley is to reach Silicon Valley (and beyond) with the good news of Jesus, and we have seen evidence of it. We see God working - from

• Wisdom. The Warrior seeks to become wise on the journey of education (Proverbs 1:7). •

Honor. The Warrior takes ownership over their attitude, actions, thoughts, and feelings today (2 Corinthians 10:5).

• Courage. The Warrior knows resilience is indispensable (Proverbs 12:28). •

Sacrifice. The Warrior seeks the heart and mindset of Christ with whomever, or whatever is in front of them (Philippians 2:2-8).

We believe these virtues are not only foundational for students but transformational for our community and what it means to be a Warrior. Imagine the impact of the Warrior community that demonstrates wisdom, honor, courage, and sacrifice in all thoughts, words, actions, and relationships. I believe the Way of the Warrior can change everything. So may God fill our community with His Spirit to impact our school, families, neighborhoods, and workplaces with the good news of the Son, Jesus. With expectation, faith, hope, and love. Amen.

Warrior Wellness

Within a few months of beginning her work at Valley Christian, Amy Hernandez recognized something special in the people around her. ___

“

The uniqueness of pursuing wellness at a Christian school is that Christ himself is an integral part of the wellness equation...There is no better strategy than Christ’s love. ~ Amy Hernandez, K-12 Director of Wellness

“This community is so full of willing spirits, of willing hearts that care deeply,” says Hernandez, hired in the summer of 2022 as the school’s first-ever K-12 Director of Wellness. A post-pandemic buzzword, “wellness” has risen to the top of organizations’ priorities across the globe. Hernandez, who comes to Valley Christian after twenty-two years in the public school system, believes that VCS’ formal foray into this space must begin with key questions applicable to staff, students, and families alike: What does wellness mean? What gets in the way of wellness? What does this community need concerning wellness? “These are difficult questions to answer,” Hernandez acknowledges. “I’m happy I’ve connected with so many stakeholders to discuss who we are and what we value.” Among the stakeholders in regular conversations with Hernandez and the rest of the VCS Wellness Team are the students themselves. Many of them are working to create groups and programming designed to support one another, address negative stigmas surrounding mental health and social-emotional care, and model vulnerability in these areas for their peers. Steering committees are in place at all three campuses to further drive school-specific initiatives focusing on both students and staff. “We’re inviting students in at the ground floor of all we do,” Hernandez explains. “They need to be an important part of everything; I want their voices to be generative in all these conversations.” “The uniqueness of pursuing wellness at a Christian school is that Christ himself is an integral part of the wellness equation,” Hernandez says. She is adamant that a thriving relationship with Jesus is the critical building block to any holistic wellness strategy. In visualizing wellness as a wheel, Hernandez believes that there is “no spoke bigger than Christ. He shows up; He heals; He remedies.” “There is no better strategy than Christ’s love.”

An Entrepreneurial Spirit BEI blends Christian values with business innovation. ___ It started with a pillbox. When Valley Christian High School launched the President’s Business Challenge (PBC) in 2014, instructors gave teams of students the task of developing a business idea, crafting a proposal, and delivering their pitches to local venture capitalists. The winning team of that inaugural challenge – comprised of freshmen – designed an automatic pill dispenser to assist individuals with complicated medication regimens or who struggle with remembering to take their vitamins. “They absolutely blew me away,” remembers Hannah Kim, now the VP of VCS’ Business, Entrepreneurship & Innovation (BEI). “The judges were completely floored by the design, the business plan, the pitch, everything.” Katherine Ho (‘18), who was on that team, recalls the extent to which she and her teammates had to understand every single facet of their product. “Knowing something deeply is an enriching experience,” explains Ho, who was valedictorian at VCHS in 2018 and is now a student at Stanford University. “It taught me to be both confident and willing to learn.” After a few rounds of the PBC, Kim and her colleagues realized they might have found something special at the intersection of Christian education and the Silicon Valley entrepreneurial spirit. The next step in developing the BEI program was creating more business electives. As interest in the electives grew, BEI began to offer business programs, club support, and business-oriented events, like speaker series and headquarters tours. To capture the growing ambition of these business students, the “Quest Incubator” program was born. This program allows students to take their business idea from concept to reality. Throughout the year-long program, the students receive industry expertise from mentors and learn from business and technology guest speakers. Embedded in the program are discussions on the importance of Christian business leaders identifying and maintaining integrity to their core values. As the students became increasingly committed to the “Quest Incubator” program, Kim laughs at the memories of late-night (and early-morning) phone conversations with her enthusiastic young entrepreneurs. “The kids in those early days were already showing so much passion, so much sheer curiosity,” she says. Now, nearly a decade after Ho and her teammates wowed the first panel of PBC judges, K-12 BEI continues to grow. A successful start-up enterprise, the BEI program currently offers extracurricular opportunities for Valley Christian elementary and junior high students, in addition to its robust slate of classes, programs, and clubs for the high school. Some students are choosing to attend Valley Christian primarily due to the opportunities available in BEI, Kim says, and many emerge from their experience with their mindset about business leadership drastically changed by the faith-driven nature of the program.

As both Kim and numerous alumni can affirm, much of that transformed perspective is due to the involvement of business leaders who serve as mentors for BEI students. Rich Farrell, a judge in the early days of the PBC remains an active mentor. He stresses the need for modeling the importance of grounding compassionate entrepreneurship on a foundation of faith. “The right way to run a business is from a place of love,” Farrell says. “Love God, our fellow businesspeople, our employees, vendors, and customers. You can be a blessing in the marketplace – if that is our posture, then everything will align perfectly.” Farrell and Kim emphasize that a relationship with Jesus can significantly blend with and impact business innovation. Even as the educators continue to dream about the next steps for BEI – these are entrepreneurs, after all – they remain intentional about remembering their own core values. “This program, at its heart, is about serving others,” Kim says. “We are faith-driven and mission-driven; we see all our work as an opportunity to help fulfill the Great Commission.” Farrell recognizes that maintaining a Christian ethic can be challenging in the often brutal and cutthroat world of the entrepreneur. With the craziness of that life in mind, he encourages business leaders of any age to slow down, to remember Christ’s model of humility and gentleness, and to breathe, rest, and reflect. While these qualities are not found in an automatic pill dispenser, thankfully, they support the goals and students of Valley Christian’s BEI.

Winning On & Off the Course Franky Sumcad was the last golfer on the course when the Valley Christian High School girls golf team won the CCS Championship last November. ___ “The rest of the team was there waiting for me, and everyone cheered when I finished,” Sumcad, now a senior, remembers. “We were all so happy and felt so united. We were so proud of what we did that day.” One week later, Varsha Ramachandran was in one of the first groups to finish their round at the NorCal Championship…which Valley Christian also won. “It was so much fun then watching my peers all finish that 18th hole,” says Ramachandran, a sophomore. “All of that build-up to us winning the championship; it all felt so good!” The dual celebrations capped off a historic year for the program, whose CCS title was its first since 2012, coming on the heels of runner-up finishes in both 2020 and 2021. The NorCal win was the program’s first since 2017. Throughout the successful run, the one constant in girls golf has been its coach, Scot Hathaway, now in his 10th season at the helm. Yet even as the team celebrates its victories, Hathaway appreciates that golfers like Sumcad and Ramachandran find just as much reward in the post-round joy they share with their teammates.

“Our girls have fun and have really bought into the team concept we push,” Hathaway says. “They will remember their relationships far more than the scores or awards they have received. That’s a big positive.”

“One of the things that I truly admire about the program Scot Hathaway has built at Valley Christian is that it is college preparatory in nature. Our girls not only learn the game with next-level instruction, but they learn what it means to be a student-athlete who can balance all aspects of their lives. Our girls learn how to excel in the classroom and manage school work while on overnight trips at prestigious tournaments. The success our alumni have had at the collegiate level is no accident,” says Eric Scharrenberg, VP/K-12 Director of Athletics.

In turn, Hathaway’s golfers appreciate both his sense of humor and the extent to which he can ready them for courses and situations. “Coach puts so much effort into helping us,” says senior Annabelle Chen. “He makes notes or gets us coursebooks – we always feel so prepared.” Notably, out of all the championships and clutch shots that Hathaway could have picked as his highlight from last year’s magical season, he opted instead to single out a match-up with league rival St. Ignatius. After the round, in which Valley Christian posted a much better score, the St. Ignatius coach approached Hathaway to remark that his own players could not stop talking about how enjoyable it was to play with the Warrior golfers. “In the long run, we want to succeed with our scores, but we really want to represent Christ in our attitude,” Hathaway says. “They will remember us more for how we acted than how we played.”

“We set high standards, both in golf and in the classroom,” he says. “Success breeds success, and the players really make the program. They play in tournaments and talk up their experience at Valley Christian. We just need to continue to work hard and represent the school in a positive way.”

SPIRITUAL

FORMATION Our culture often spends time asking, “Who am I?” Perhaps the more essential question is, “Who am I becoming?” As we know, our lives are a lifelong process of growth, and, over time, our values, attitudes, and habits shape who we are today and who we will become tomorrow. ___ To become the people we desire to be requires intentionality. As Christians, we believe God desires to transform us daily into the likeness of Jesus (Colossians 3:1-17). While the idea of becoming, living, and loving like Jesus sounds daunting, thankfully, this is the work of the Holy Spirit, who is renewing us day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16). The Prophet Isaiah writes, “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay; you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand” (Isaiah 64:8). If you have ever seen our incredible artists or ceramicists crafting their masterpieces, you notice that each brush stroke or sculpted shape is intentional. This picture is the image of God’s work in us. The Apostle Paul calls us “God’s workmanship” (Ephesians. 2:10). In the original language of the New Testament, “workmanship” is the word poiema, where we derive our English word, “poem.” You and I are God’s intentional work of art. We are God’s masterpiece, shaped by His hands. Our Quest for Excellence stems from the One who intentionally crafted us as His work of excellence (Psalm 8:3-5). In the same way, we believe our spiritual lives thrive purposefully. At Valley, we want to help people grow in their relationship with God, whether they are beginning to explore faith or, as committed followers of Jesus, pursuing their calling. We call this pathway and process of discipleship – Spiritual Formation.

We believe God has established Valley Christian Schools as part of His Kingdom mission to Silicon Valley and beyond. Furthermore, we believe a thoughtful pathway and process towards spiritual formation sets us up for what God wants to do in and through our community. By God’s grace, we believe God will do more than we can ever ask or imagine according to His power over the next sixty, eighty, and one hundred years through Valley Christian Schools. Family Matters When the members of Vivid Dance Team heard their name announced, they couldn’t contain their emotions.

“It was overwhelming, exciting, satisfying,” recalls Cece Gu, now a Valley Christian High School senior. “It was also sad in a sense, knowing that it was the last time this particular group would compete together.”

“We felt like all of our time and hard work had paid off,” Gu says. “This dance program has given me so much power and confidence. When I dance here, I feel like I’m at home, with family.”

In March of 2022, Vivid was named National Champion of the Extra-Small Open Division at the annual Contest of Champions in Florida, defeating powerhouse programs from all across the country. Extra-Small, of course, applies only to the size of the schools – the accomplishment, and the effort it took to get there, was anything but.

Family remains a key theme in the VCHS Dance Arts program, even as the “home,” continues to expand. This will be the school’s fifth year of partnering with alumni husband-and-wife Jason and Tawnya Kuzia, both 2001 grads, at their off-campus studio, NorCal Dance Arts. The additional studio space has allowed Valley Christian

dancers access to not just more space, but top-of-the-line equipment and instruction. Jason Kuzia has been the VCHS Dance Arts program’s Lighting Designer for over a decade, and both he and Tawnya have years of experience working at the highest levels of the professional dance industry. “The opportunities to work at the Kuzias’ facilities have been priceless benefits to our dance programs,” says Michelle McLaughlin, Valley Christian’s K-12 Director of Dance. More importantly, their kindness and support for the development of young Christian artists here at Valley Christian has been a tremendous blessing to me and the rest of our faculty.” “We truly believe the experience and knowledge we gained as students at Valley Christian High School led to the success of our future careers. We are grateful to continue to be a part of the VCHS arts family,” Kuzia says. “The tremendous growth that has taken place throughout our dance program these past five years could not have happened without the generous support of our VCS alums, Jason and Tawnya Kuzia. It indeed has been a win-win for all!” says Troy Gunter, VP/K-12 Director of the Conservatory of the Arts. The Kuzias aren’t the only alumni who have been instrumental in the dance program’s recent success – Vivid’s championship-winning performance was choreographed by Tori Evans, who graduated from VCHS in 2010 and has been working with Vivid for years since, even while pursuing her own professional dance career in Los Angeles. “I am really grateful to work with dance professionals who have different styles and extensive experience in the professional world,” says Gu, who joined the Valley Christian dance program in 6th grade upon moving from Beijing. “Working with them has allowed me to open my eyes to dance. I am humbled that this program has granted me access to so many cool spaces, and so many amazing, professional people and experiences.”

Caring Amidst Crisis As a first-grade Girl Scout, Sydney Vaughn had the privilege of dissecting a sheep’s eye. “I was instantly drawn to anatomy,” remembers Sydney, now a Valley Christian senior. “The practice of medicine became my life goal.” ___ In the years since, Sydney’s scientific passions have shifted from veterinary to human, but her vision remains clear with all due respect to the sheep’s eye. “I believe that my purpose in life is to care for others,” she says. “As I learn more about the human body, with all of its complexity, I discover more and more the intent God has for all human beings.” Thanks now to Valley Christian’s Health & Wellness program – one of the newest and fastest-growing programs within Applied Math, Science, and Engineering (AMSE) – medically-minded students like Sydney have expanded opportunities to engage in impactful new experiences. “AMSE Health & Wellness is specifically designed to help students foster a strong connection between the head knowledge that is learned in the classroom and the heart drive that is needed to serve and love people well,” explains Mrs. Jennifer Gerlach, a VCHS science teacher who helped launch and now leads the program. In the past year, Health & Wellness has partnered with CityTeam Ministries for outreach and service efforts; students have begun working with outside organizations to learn how to train service dogs; and in the 2022-23 school year, the program expanded into Valley Christian Junior High, and high school students will soon have opportunities to shadow medical professionals. Ultimately, Mrs. Gerlach hopes to create a pair of distinct tracks within the program: one focusing on medicine and allied healthcare and one focusing on medical missions and social justice. “Scientific subjects, without an outward, service-minded approach, are meaningless,” she says. “It’s through the marriage of these topics with a heart for humanity that makes this work impactful.” Perhaps never in these students’ lives have health and wellness issues been more salient. Current high school seniors were freshmen when COVID-19 upended their high school trajectories. Students are still recognizing the effects nearly three years since the initial school shutdown.

AMSE HEALTH & WELLNESS IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO HELP STUDENTS FOSTER A STRONG CONNECTION BETWEEN THE HEAD KNOWLEDGE THAT IS LEARNED IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE HEART DRIVE THAT IS NEEDED TO SERVE AND LOVE PEOPLE WELL. ~ Jennifer Gerlach, VCHS Science Teacher, Health & Wellness Program Manager “The pandemic pushed many into a precarious state of health – some physically, some mentally,” says senior Allison Bang, who, like Sydney, is one of the Health & Wellness Program Fellows. “The importance of managing our bodies has been elevated, really emphasizing the importance of health and wellness as people learn how to better take care of themselves.” While certainly not exclusive to students who dream of medical careers, many in the program do plan on pursuing health sciences after high school: both Sydney and Allison plan on going into fields of medicine. They explained how volunteering at a Health Fair for the homeless in downtown San Jose in April galvanized them. Sydney and Allison realized the incredible benefits of their work. Alongside family members and workers from CityTeam and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, VCHS Health & Wellness students distributed hygiene kits and warm food while providing free medical care. “My students are brilliant visionaries with a heart for service,” declares Mrs. Gerlach. “My favorite part of this program is watching students dream about what our broken world can be someday. They are an inspiration.”

The VCHS South Asian Student Union and the ASB presented the first Desi Dhamaal Celebration. This studentled event treated their peers to a taste of the food, dress, and culture of our South Asian community.

This generosity meant that we could do more for every child: more classroom improvements, more students attending VCS through tuition assistance, more facility improvements for our program areas, more faculty receiving housing assistance, and more social and emotional support for kids who have been through so much these last years. Every dollar made a difference! Together, we can and will do more. Last school year, more individuals than ever gave financially to VCS, which is truly something to celebrate. While VCS has an incredible 60-year history and tremendous growth in recent decades, we are still young philanthropically. She attended VCS in both elementary and middle school. Her son, Christian, is a high school senior and a VCS Lifer. She brings more than ten years of experience as an accomplished advancement leader in higher education. She most recently served as Director of Annual Giving Strategies at Santa Clara University. While at Santa Clara University, Rosas met and exceeded her goals by raising more than fifteen million dollars for the prestigious Santa Clara Fund. She looks forward to building community with the entire Warrior Family.

GIVING IN ACTION The vision of Valley Christian Schools is to provide a place where every student pursues their personal Quest for Excellence. We use our tuition funds each year to ensure that the school’s operations go smoothly and uninterrupted. However, through philanthropy and the generosity of our community, we see the vision of Valley Christian Schools come to life. Our breadth of courses and program offerings only exist because generous people in the community saw a need and gave above and beyond tuition to create new programs. Through the Warrior Fund, every campus and program can make improvements and have new supplies and more resources.

ENHANCED FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS The Warrior Fund increases each year’s operational budget, allowing VCS to do more for our students. With increased operational budgets, your donations support enhancements for programs and facilities on each campus, allowing VCS to do more for our students than we could through tuition alone. In recent years, the strength of our Warrior Fund has supported facility improvements such as the Counseling Center, Library, updated classrooms, and labs.

Counseling Center The remodeled Counseling Center is the new home of our talented team of counselors, who work tirelessly to foster the future goals of each student and nurture our students as unique individuals with vastly different passions and talents.

Human Performance Center (HPC) Modeled after the San Francisco 49ers’ training facility, Valley Christian Schools’ new Human Performance Center will open in Spring 2023. This new facility will provide year-round access to sports-specific training aimed at maximizing strength, speed, and power for all student-athletes.

Library Our newly remodeled Library and Learning Commons area provide students with a quiet space to focus on their studies. With plenty of seating, natural light, and supportive staff, students often plan to meet and study with their friends in our Learning Commons.

Updated Second Grade Classrooms Over the summer of 2022, each of our second grade classrooms was refurbished with new desks, carpets, and play spaces. Thanks to our generous donors, VCES plans to upgrade one grade’s classrooms each summer.

Tuition Assistance Our tuition assistance program is available to current and prospective students with demonstrated financial needs across all campuses. Tuition assistance allows qualified students to become Warriors and makes the Quest for Excellence possible for students of all socioeconomic backgrounds.

Teachers’ Assistance Fund In partnership with the HAGE Foundation, the Teachers’ Assistance Fund was created in 2021 to support and retain high-quality teachers in our very high cost of living area. This new fund supports housing assistance and other important needs of our wonderful VCS faculty.

Wellness Initiative The health and well-being of our students is essential for the Quest for Excellence. Over the past two years, VCS has dedicated itself to improving our mental health offerings. In the Fall of 2022, we have a new K-12 Director of Wellness, a team of therapy dogs who serve students each week, and dedicated spaces for students to quietly study or meet with friends and counselors. Donations will allow VCS to do even more to support the social and emotional wellbeing of our students.

Human Performance Center Equipment The Human Performance Center (HPC) is currently under construction. Donations designated to Athletics will be used to fund the cost of new equipment for this facility. The HPC will be used by Athletics teams as well as junior high and high school classes.

As an inaugural member of Valley Christian’s Applied Math, Science, and Engineering (AMSE) program – started by the late Werner Vavken in 2010 – Lee worked alongside talented fellow students building projects he never could have imagined, all of which he called an “eye-opening experience.” Vavken and his wife Sheri were vocal in their support of Lee, and instrumental in working with the school to help him stay. Thanks to an influx of institutional and financial support, Lee completed his high school education at Valley Christian. Lee graduated from VCHS in 2013 and studied computer engineering at San Jose State. He is now the CEO of a signage solutions company and the managing partner of a firm that provides consulting services to minority-owned businesses. As a successful professional, he is vocal about the importance of supporting students who are in need. Lee understands the challenging economic situations students face. He explains, “If I hadn’t ultimately received assistance from people involved with Valley Christian, I don’t know where I would’ve been.” Lee’s motivation is clear: “Now I find myself giving back to people as well; when someone does it for you, you want to do it for someone else.”

For a portion of his high school career, Michael Lee’s routine included a singularly atypical task: each week, he walked the hallway to the VCS finance office to contribute his own paycheck towards his tuition. ___ Lee, who started at Valley Christian Schools as a third-grader, had watched as his family struggled to withstand the recession of 2008. The economic decline cost his father his career. Lee’s parents divorced, and the family lost their house. But Lee was determined to remain a Warrior. “My family wanted me to have a good education with a Christian backing,” Lee says. “We had deep relationships with students and members of the faculty.”

Briana Ahmed cannot stop gushing about Valley Christian. “Amazing” is the first word she uses to describe the high school she graduated from in 2011. “Wonderful” and “terrific” soon follow, and that was just her first sentence. Although it has now been over a decade since her time on the Skyway Campus came to an official end, Ahmed admits that she thinks about her time at VCHS frequently and fondly. After studying at Azusa Pacific University, she returned to the Bay Area to work as a nurse at Stanford. But Valley Christian has a special place in Ahmed’s heart, and she attributes this unique connection to the Warrior community’s ability to “keep their family so near and dear.” Ahmed’s older brother, Lawan, graduated from VCHS in 2005, and she laughs as she describes her parents as being “so passionate about Valley Christian that most people think they’re alumni themselves!” As a high schooler, Ahmed was involved in both the Cheer and Dance programs, as well as ASB. She credits her time as a Warrior with preparing her intellectually, spiritually, and socially for life in Azusa and beyond, remembering vividly both the academic rigor of her classes and the impact of such experiences as traveling to Africa on a school missions trip. Ahmed’s ASB teacher, Nathan Smith, remembers her as being a consistent spark of joy and enthusiasm during every class session. “You knew when Briana was in a room, in all the best ways,” says Mr. Smith, now the VCHS Vice Principal of Student Life. “And you knew when she wasn’t there, because there was just some positive energy missing from the room.” The positive energy is still very much alive and well for Ahmed when it comes to her alma mater. She stays involved as much as she can through public events and alumni experiences. And usually, her parents are in tow. “I’ve always felt like a member of a family here, and my own family has always felt so included.” Emphasizing the love that Valley has consistently given her, Ahmed concludes, “This place feeds my soul.”

The Shechem Oak Society is a growing group committed to strengthening VCS to fulfill its mission and vision for generations to come through Planned Giving. A Planned Gift is a personal and meaningful contribution that will leave a lasting legacy for you, your family, and the thousands of children that your generosity will influence. In Scripture, God assured Abraham that He would keep His promise of giving the land to Abraham’s descendants. It was where Jacob dug a well and erected an altar; where Joseph’s family buried his bones; where Joshua gave his parting address to serve the Lord; and where Jesus disclosed Himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman at the well (Genesis 12:6, 33:18, Joshua 24:26, John 4:12). Shechem was a reminder of God’s faithfulness for generation after generation. We pray that VCS, like Shechem, will remind us of God’s faithfulness and fulfill its mission in Silicon Valley and the world. Extend the Gift

EVENTS RECAP 2021-2022

Events are a significant aspect of fundraising at VCS, and thankfully during the 2021-2022 school year, they were back in person. Our goal for all events is to come together for fellowship, raise funds, and, most importantly, build community. The success of last year’s events was due to a combination of outstanding volunteers and the faithfulness of a generous community. Our first community event of last year was the Homecoming football game. Thousands of our Valley Christian faithful fans rallied around the first in-person event in over two years. It was incredible to see so many of our Alumni come out in force and support our Warriors. The excitement was palpable as everyone enjoyed the annual Homecoming Community Party featuring our impressive Conservatory student performers. It was truly joyful to see our students, alumni, faculty, and parents together again. The PTPF (Parent Teacher Prayer Fellowship) hosts annual campus fundraisers on the elementary and junior high school campuses. As our K-5 students ran the track for the Elementary Jog-A-Thon, we saw the joy on their faces. Not only did they reach their fundraising goal, but they slimed Dr. Guven! Our Junior High PTPF brought the Color Games, a new event for our 6th - 8th graders. The participants had a blast, reaching their goals. How better to celebrate than by watching Mr. Clemons - wearing a suit - jump in the pool! Together, these two campuses raised over $150,000 for the Warrior Fund. Because of their efforts, our students now enjoy classroom and computer lab upgrades. This year’s Quest Ball at Kirigin Cellars was a memorable Evening Under the Stars. Over five hundred parents, alumni, Board members, faculty, and staff enjoyed the first outdoor Quest Ball. The spacious setting, beautiful scenery,

and incredible décor created a magnificent evening where our community came together and raised over $500,000 for the Warrior Fund. It was truly inspiring to witness the generosity of our community to support Tuition Assistance for VCS students. Our annual Quest Ball dinner and auction was successful because our parent volunteers were led by chairs Nicole Staubli, Nabila Haq, Diana Matheou, Rikki Hanna, and Kathleen Kelly. Many people worked diligently to make this a successful and special celebration, and we are thankful for their efforts. This faithful support, given yearly from alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, makes the Quest Ball a great success. After two years of missing the Annual Golf Classic, it was wonderful to return for the event’s 27th tournament. Hosted at the prestigious Silver Creek Country Club, the sold-out Golf Classic brought together alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends for a wonderful day. While our talented men and women’s golf teams delighted and impressed the crowd, parent volunteers (Kathleen Kelly, Jeff Layne, and Lars Jorgensen) also provided support with new party holes. We are thankful to the volunteers and athletes who supported the Golf Classic. There is no school or educational organization, including Valley Christian, which can reach its full potential and succeed without the active participation of parent and alumni volunteers and faithful donors from the community. A HUGE thank you to everyone who supported these events!
