Dear Valley Christian Family, One word comes to mind when I think of what happened these past twelve months: School. 2011-2012 was the year the Lead Pastor of Valley Christian Center (that would be me) stepped in as the Superintendent of Valley Christian Schools. Believe me when I say, it was not what I wanted, but what our ministry needed. The School was facing a credibility crisis and needed immediate attention. Looking back, the position has afforded me the opportunity to see firsthand the amazing people who sacrifice each day to make the largest Christian ministry in the Tri-valley, Valley Christian Schools, the most enviable place to educate one’s children. I have always been a fan of Christian Education. Now I am a fanatic. Our school is postured not only for growth, but to lead this area in quality education that speaks to the mind, the body and the spirit. Each day of the week, the pastoral staff serves under the administrators in ensuring the ministry of Jesus touches each student in our schools. Because of these efforts, more and more families in our school are checking out our church, Valley Christian Center. If you haven’t walked our school campus, seen our classrooms of the future or heard the numerous projects we have underway, I encourage you to take a tour with Lori Cantrell, our Director of Admissions. Catch the enthusiasm. See the innovation. Experience the rewards. Valley Christian Schools is one of the best ideas ever birthed by Valley Christian Center! Financially, we had a fabulous year. Both church and school ended in the black with nearly a quarter of a million dollar turn around from the previous year. We raised nearly half a million dollars for our new Sanctuary | Performing Arts Center. The outside shell is near completion and the Campaign Committee is working to raise that last half million to get us a closed building. Once complete, we can enter into our final phase of interior work and release the tradesmen in our congregation to lead work crews on the inside. We need one more campaign to get us occupancy, details of which will come after Easter 2013. The Leadership Team took significant steps forward this year and strengthened key areas of ministry: • After a decade of service to our schools, Jimi Merrell was reassigned to the church to lead us in the critical fronts of Evangelism and Intercession. • Anthony McLeod returned home from Bible school to serve our youth in both the school and church. • Lillian Kinney stepped in as Lead Director of our Preschool to take the chair Jeri Schall left vacant. • Ginny Mendes will be assisting Lillian in the Preschool. • Eric Raasch was reassigned as our Director of Educational Technologies. • Dave Johnson began as our Chief Operations Officer to oversee areas of Human Resources, Public Relations and Marketing, Finances, Admissions and Enrollment Management, Information Technology, Buildings and Grounds, and New Construction. Overall, it has been an exhausting but rewarding year and I thank you for your patience with me as I lead our schools and find our next Superintendent. I look forward to releasing the school responsibilities to our next leader and giving my full focus back to the church side. For more specifics regarding the ministries of Valley Christian Center, thumb through the pages of this report and read about all the exciting stories God has done on this Hill in our forty-ninth year of ministry. For His glory and for a city He loves,

Financial Repor t The VCC Finance Committee meets monthly to monitor all church and school budgets as well as make financial policy and budget recommendations to the VCC Board of Deacons. The committee members are Sandy Cooper (VCC Board Treasurer), Craig Baysinger, Bryan Tebbutt, Jocelyn Leano, Roger Valci (Lead Pastor) and David Cariveau (Business Administrator). This year VCC hired Vavrinek, Trine & Day to conduct the annual audit of our financial records. They have reported that the following financial statements fairly present, in all material respects, the Church’s financial position, results of operations and cash flows.

FINANCIAL ST ATEMENTS Septem b er 2012

E v ery G i f t M a tters The Lord is faithful. The weekly average for tithes for the year was $24,960. The budgeted target was $23,500 per week. This level of giving enabled us to add Pastors Jimi Merrell and Anthony McLeod to the staff. Thank you for your faithfulness.

V a l l ey C hristi a n S c hool Ministry Nearly 870 students were enrolled in our Schools last year. This is one of the largest, if not the largest, outreach ministries in this valley. Plans are in the works to replace the current athletic field with new turf and a football field. A refurbished Science Center is also being planned for the High School. The Arts have been expanded at the Elementary School and Preschool.

Ou r N e w S a nct u ary The Lord is at work among us. As He builds us up in Him, He is also raising a building for His Glory. Our congregation has contributed $4 million toward this project since its beginning. In addition, we have another $100,000 pledged. Windows, doors and stucco are to be completed this fall, fully enclosing and weatherproofing the building. See the V4RV page for more information.

Operations A year ago, in my pursuit of a new Superintendent, I began to reflect on the structure of our organization. I asked myself: “If I set up this organization, if I created it from scratch, how would I do it? How does one organize 130 employees between the church and school and manage a 8-9 million dollar budget?” I then came up with the following organizational chart:

VCC | VCS Leadership Structure God glorified through His people operating in their passions and giftings to reach a city He loves Church

Services Operational

Operational

Superintendent

Chief Operating Officer Lead Pastor Deacon Board

10.

Schools

Operational

It was then I realized that VCC and VCS needs 3 leaders – one for Church, one for the Schools and one for Operations. Most people understand the church and school side. It’s the operation branch that is fairly complex for an organization our size. Operations include: Human Resources, Accounting, Information Technology, Maintenance, Marketing, Admissions and Building Projects. After staring at this chart for a while, I soon came to two conclusions: 1. This explains why I am so tired. I have been doing three jobs – church, school and operations. 2. We need three leaders to on the Hill. We are too big and too complex to not have full and unified leadership. I then wrote a job description for each one and began the hunt. In my pursuit, I ran across Dave Johnson. He had the school background. He knew Marketing. He came from Monte Vista, a school we have partnered with to bring us into the future of education. He pastored at Willow Creek and he loved our church. With his arrival on July 1st, he has relieved me of the operations arm of our organization and allowed me to focus more on pastoring and leading our schools. I hope to find the next Superintendent by Christmas and complete the trio of leadership. I believe once we get fully staffed this place will flow at pace not seen in decades.

DAV E JOHNSO N | dj o hns o n@dubl i nvc c . o r g

Educational Technolog y

Back on July 1, 2012, I relinquished my role as Director of Operations to take on a new title: Director of Educational Technology. While I’ve served as Director of Technology since 1998, my new focus will be bringing technology into the classroom in a new way – iPads. Since its introduction in the Spring of 2010, the iPad has slowly been revolutionizing the way we disseminate information. At Valley Christian Schools, we’re going to take the iPad and launch it into a huge endeavor; to revolutionize the way our students learn, collaborate, and share information. This year, we’ve begun by putting an iPad into the hands of our teachers. As teachers learn what’s possible on the iPad, I’ll be making sure they have the resources and support they need to dive deeper into technology. One metaphor that we’re using is water and technology. Both water and technology are all around us. We use both in our every day lives. But we all have different comfort levels when we’re surrounded by either. The goal for our staff this year is to become “comfortable in the pool.” For some that will be a challenge as they may not know how to swim. For others, they’re ready to dive in the ocean. Either way, we want to make sure that everyone is feeling safe and supported as we embark on this new adventure in education.

Activ e A du l ts Our faithful Seniors meet each Sunday during the 10:30 hour. This group of 18-20 love to study, meditate and examine God’s Word. This close knit group of Active Adults also uses the class time to share their needs and pray for one another. Several times throughout the year, they will gather for meals after class and enjoy fellowship together. During this past ministry year, the Seniors had a chance to go through chapters 1-4 of the LifeScript series. From mid-September through February, the VCC Leadership team brought the curriculum to the class. It was a rich experience presenting VCC’s mission and vision to this amazing group. During the past 5 months the class has been studying I Samuel and will soon continue their study into II Samuel. A special thanks to Austin Ashmore who has served so faithfully as one of the classes two teachers for the last several years. Joining Austin this year as part of the teaching team has been Eddie Jo Mack. Thanks, Austin and Eddie Jo, for blessing us with your rich knowledge of God’s Word.

Forer u nners This VCC ministry, with its primary focus to reach those adults 50 and older, continues to grow and advance. Our second full year of ministry consisted of several social outings and two outreach projects. In January we hosted our 2nd annual Bocce Ball tournament. The evening started off with a meal in the Fireside Room and then proceeded to an evening of bocce ball. With over 50 adults in attendance, it was a competitive and exciting evening together. We are all looking forward to the 2013 Bocce Ball event scheduled for this coming January. Other events included a night out at Neighborhood Church to view the musical King David and this past month a dinner|movie evening at the Paramount Theater in Oakland.

In the outreach area, the Forerunners had a chance to visit the Wicklow Senior Apartments in Dublin and spread a little Christmas cheer to their residents. On a Sunday afternoon in December the Foreunners leadership team and members of VCC, along with the Girl’s Mpact group decorated a Christmas tree, sang carols and enjoyed cookies with the Wicklow Senior residents. Also in December the leadership team had a chance to visit a senior complex in Hayward, called Estabrook, where we once again decorated a tree and enjoyed a time of interacting with the residents. 2012-2013 holds many new opportunities for the Forerunners ministry. On November 10, we will be heading to Mount Hermon for a Northern California Regional Conference sponsored by the CASA (Christian Association Serving Adults) organization. Come and join us!!! Leadership team members: Sandy Brunson, Bryan Tebbutt, Diane Deming, Marilyn Stager, Diane Sutton, Austin and Joanne Ashmore, and Pastor Don Dickinson.

Hi l l toppers The Hilltoppers outreach continues to meet during the months of February, March, May, July, September and November. During the course of this two hour event, VCC has the opportunity to bless 60-75 seniors in our community. The evening consists of a wonderful meal prepared by our gourmet chefs, Michele Child, Shanon Tillak, Wanda Lapasinski, and Rob Washington. After the meal, there is a 30-40 minute window of music ministry. Oftentimes VCC’s own worship team members share in this segment. For the second year in a row, we experienced growth in two areas. One being the total number in attendance and second an increase in our visitors. An influx of new seniors are attending for the very first time. For nearly two decades Madeline Scott has shared her love and passion in ministering to our Seniors. Thanks Madeline for your continual faithful service!

Adult Ed u ca tio n “They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers.” Acts 2:42 One of my favorite things about our adult classes and small groups is the friendships that develop as believers commit to a spiritual journey together. I have personally witnessed new friendships form in classes I have taught, have watched couples connect outside of their small groups, and have heard multiple stories of people living life together! Not only are our adults growing deeper in their relationship with our God, but also growing in friendship with those planted beside them at VCC. One of our main highlights for this year was the re-launch of Marriage Ministries. With help from a stellar leadership team, four new small groups for couples were formed. Each group had an eclectic group of couples from various backgrounds that had a common desire to study God’s Word with their spouse. A special Thank You to the couples that led those groups: David & Diana Alvarez Craig & Vicky Cassell John & Diane Deming Richard & Miriam Lietz Matt & Dani Merrill

Li f e S cript “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful, I know that full well…All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:14,16 It has been a great year for our LifeScript classes! As pastors, it is a joy to get to know our members better as they walk through the different chapters of LifeScript. Each class is designed to help people Discover God’s Story in them. Two highlights worth noting that have come from LifeScript are that 51 people made the decision to make VCC their church home by becoming members and 239 people have stepped up to become ministers! We are almost halfway to our goal of 500 ministers!

Children Children are important and special! We work diligently to partner with parents by designing faith-building programs and services that can help kids encounter God, learn from and about the Bible, develop meaningful friendships and just plain have fun! This takes a lot of prayer, planning and a massive number of faithful volunteers who are committed to walk alongside our kids. It takes men and women who are determined to “show up” regularly in the lives of the children to whom they minister. One place where people started “showing up” this year was in our Sunday morning ministry to elementary children. We went from having no available adult volunteers to having faithful teams at both 8:30 and 10:30 AM services. Talk about “showing up!” Because of them, we were able to have age-appropriate Bible classes, taught by the same people every week all school year during the 8:30 AM hour and an exciting Kids Church service at 10:30 AM. Like our Sunday elementary ministry programs, our nursery, preschool, Royal Rangers, Mpact and VBS programs were also led by faithful, consistent adults who “showed up” to help teach and disciple kids. Thank you for “showing up” and giving your best for God’s kids! Nearly 100 volunteers “showed up” to pull off another awesome VBS in July that was attended by over 200 preschool and elementary aged kids. I was especially encouraged by the intentional partnership with Valley Christian Schools as both our academic preschool and elementary summer day camp staff and students participated in VBS. We had a blast and over 30 students prayed for the first time to make Jesus Lord!

In July we hosted our annual “Bash in the Park,” in Emerald Glen Park in order to thank and celebrate our volunteers. Children’s Ministry team members and their families were invited to come for dinner and gelato in the park. We were excited to have 175 in attendance and look forward to an even larger group on July 28, 2013. Sign up to serve in CM this year and you can come to the Bash too! Janae Valci (Mpact Girls Clubs Coordinator), Rick Leytem (Royal Rangers Senior Commander), Emily Chow (Early Childhood Ministry Coordinator), Kris Baker (Children’s Ministry Assistant) and my husband Pastor Dwight Davis served as the core leadership team for Children’s Ministry this year. Each made sacrifices to serve and should be commended for their leadership. I want to especially acknowledge and say thank you to Rick Leytem as he passes the leadership baton this next year to Dan Missbrenner, who will step into the role of Senior Commander, and to Janae Valci for her invitation to Vicky Cassell to serve alongside her as co-coordinator. Welcome Dan and Vicky! Thank you for agreeing to serve. As we move into another year, I am praying that the Lord will give us a fresh vision to see our VCC kids empowered by His Spirit and better ideas and methods to teach them God’s Word. We rely on God’s Holy Spirit to anoint our efforts and in the ability to connect loving adults who will consistently “show up” in a child’s life. I thank God for those who did that this year. Please consider joining us as we “show up” and walk alongside our VCC kids in 2012-2013.

Hospitality Ministr y

Our VCC Hospitality Ministry continues to be a valuable resource to our congregation. Each Sunday teams of volunteers position themselves to serve and make the church experience an enjoyable one for all who attend. The Hospitality Ministry is one of the many areas within the church that relies on those who are looking for opportunities to serve, either on a regular basis or for special events. These individuals set the tone for our members and guests to feel welcomed, loved and appreciated. Our goal is to make each one feel affirmed, celebrated and cared for. Each week over 60 individuals help serve our fellowship during our Sunday morning meetings. A very special thanks for those who lead our ministry teams: Kevin McGuire, Matt Merrill, John Deming and Arlie Smith | Head Ushers Michelle Anderson | Greeters Ruth Edwards | Information and Visitors Diane Deming | Hospitality James Kelly | Coffee Shinta Anderson | First Aid/CPR John Youngblood | Transportation

O UR T H EME: Man to Man Man to God Man to Family

Po w er Bre ak f a st | An average of 40 men gathered on Saturday morning every other

month for a bountiful breakfast and great fellowship. We had 6 wonderful Christ-filled men as our guest speakers who spoke about how God had changed their life and encouraged us to live better lives for Christ.

S w eetHe art Dinner D a nce | Held for the 2nd year with a theme of A Romantic Evening In New York, the Sweetheart Dinner Dance was attended by more than 65 couples dressed in their finest attire, while enjoying a catered dinner and dancing the night away with fun and games led by our own DJ, Brad Kinney, and his beautiful wife Lillian. M en ’ s Ann ual R etre at | Over 90 men attended 2011’s retreat in Yosemite National Park. Chris Hayward, President of Cleansing Stream, led us each day with the theme of Man to Man – Man to God – Man to Family. Every man was touched by Chris’s presentation and left the valley with a different look at his relationship with God, his family and his fellow man. M en ’ s S m al l G roups | We have 12 leaders with groups meeting almost every day of

the week. This year Stan Cooper and Scott Van Dussen stepped up to a new commitment to care for the widows and widowers of VCC . They have let it be known they will provide help when and where help is needed. Contact Men’s Ministries through our web site or call Stan or Scott directly.

Go l f M inistry | We had several new faces that joined us for fun and fellowship. What a great way to meet and connect with men and women who enjoy the challenge of the game of golf. This group of golfers, comprised of all levels of skill, visited 9 different courses throughout the Bay area.

M en ’ s Fr aternity | Dan Missbrenner led the men through the Authentic Manhood series, Winning At Work & Home. There were 23 men that participated in the 16-week series. Work & Home – together these two words capture the worlds that make up the bulls-eye of a man’s life. These areas absorb most of a man’s time, talent, energy, effort, and creativity. Most importantly, no man can afford success in only one of these critical areas. The good life demands that he win in both. Work and home are clearly the “Super Bowls” of manhood. Real men know how to win in both! Men’s Fraternity provides men with an encouraging process that teaches them how to live lives of authentic manhood as modeled by Jesus Christ and directed by the Word of God. Missions

Scriptures clearly teach that we are living in the “End Times,” however, how close are we? A modern day Mayan group predicted that the world would come to an end this year. Well, we are still here and the truth is that nobody knows exactly when the end will come. Even though we do not know exactly when the end will come, there is a very important attribute about God we do know. He is patient and does not want anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). As long as we are on earth, there is a Heavenly Mandate to go and make disciples of all nations. At Valley Christian Center, we have partnered with missionaries and organizations, both within the United States and around the world to respond to this call.

FY 2011 - 2012 Mission Update

• 37 missionaries received designated monthly support totaling $71,000. • $92,000 of designated funds was given directly to missionaries or organizations for projects. • $12,000 of undesignated funds was given in one time gifts to missionaries with immediate needs.

Short Term Missions Trips • 22 attended Mission to Mexico • 29 attended Mission to the Philippines

There is One World, and we have One Call. What will you do this year to respond to your Heavenly Mandate?

The Future of Missions at Valley Christian

As the world rapidly advances and changes; the Global Missions Team has begun the process of restructuring our focus and approach to Missions. We believe a more focused approach will allow us to have stronger relationships/partnerships with our missionaries, which will result in more fruitful ministry. We are looking and depending on the Lord of the Harvest for wisdom in our planning and passion in our execution. It is an honor and privilege to be a part of this End Time Harvest. 15,000 hours (combined VCC & VCS) Over 30 non-profits 8 partnering churches 1 Citizen of the Year, designated by Mayor Tim Sbranti to Gloria Gregory

God started this local Missions effort in the spring of 2008; we now have over 200 VCC volunteers who have responded to the call. CityServe of the Tri-Valley is not only connecting the hearts of God’s people to those He loves in the city, it is unifying the churches as they heard what we were doing and wanted to join in our efforts. Historically, churches have debated, if not divided, over issues of eschatology, ordination requirements, communion and baptism practices, spiritual gifts and worship styles. Regrettably, the reputation of Jesus and His church is often tied to these discussions. CityServe of the Tri-Valley is changing that. Politicians, leaders in the non-profits, and people in need in our region are now seeing Christ’s church as caring, compassionate, even loving. Liaisons from the partnering churches meet with Gloria Gregory on a quarterly basis to strategize on how to promote serving opportunities in the nonprofits to God’s people in churches. Our own Kelly Kindall produces a monthly CityServe newsletter that circulates in our partner churches. Senior pastors are meeting to bring structure, oversight and leadership to CityServe of the Tri-Valley. There is even discussion about forming a CityServe of the Tri-Valley nonprofit. Another side benefit: new friendships within our church and community have been formed through serving together in this CityServe program! In it all, the Holy Spirit is prompting people to get out of the pew and bring Christ’s love and compassion to those He is yearning to reach. Church leaders talk all the time about our need to reach our city. With CityServe of the Tri-Valley in place, we now have a road to actually do that! Further, we see many more ways that this local missions work can and will grow and are looking forward to how God will provide more opportunities and workers.

One day can change everything

Valley Christian Schools

On this particular day, I was driving to Watsonville. Tom, a man I pastored in Fremont, wanted to show me how he integrated iPads in his classes at Monte Vista Christian. To be honest, this trip was more of a favor to him than a benefit to me or our schools. I dragged Larry and Eric along for company. Perhaps we would learn a few tips about using iPads as textbooks and get a free lunch for the visit. When we drove on campus, it began. The courtyard was clean and inviting. Large pictures of students were attached to light posts. Places for students to sit and chat. It felt more like a Disney park than a school campus. While I was standing there enjoying the atmosphere, a man came to me and said, “Hi, I’m Steve. Aren’t you Tom’s friend? He is busy now in class. How about I give you a tour?” We walked upstairs where I noticed Scripture verses on the walls. As we interrupted a class, few took time to turn their heads. Students were huddled in groups using their iPads for a project. The room was thematically designed somewhat in a manner Disney would approach decor. Color was everywhere on the wall. Decorations that supported the subject matter were everywhere. Desks were replaced by tables. Large TV’s were on the wall instead of white boards. There was energy in the room. Enthusiasm for learning. Room after room was the same way. Pretty soon, I stopped seeing decorations and iPads and simply basked in the innovations and excitement that was all around me. I told myself, “This is the future of education.” I then turned to our host and asked again for his name and position. “My name is Steve Sharp and I am the headmaster of Monte Vista Christian School.” Three decisions came from that day that have altered the course of our Schools.

1. iPads as delivery devices for education | Students love these devices and so do teachers. We gave every teacher an iPad at the end of the school year. I reassigned Eric Raasch as Director of Technology Instruction. I asked Eric to beef up our network to handle the bandwidth when students begin bringing iPads to campus next year. We reconfigured five classrooms for iPad integration. Teachers began private instruction and seminars on how to use iPads to teach.

2. AEsTHETics matter | “I want color on campus. This idea that a school must look like a hospital is over.” With the help of Chuck Fleming, an interior designer 26.

on our staff, we hit all three Schools. Teachers who were not slated to get their rooms done this year, decided to jump ahead and brought their family members to paint themselves. It probably will take us five years, but every room on this campus is getting a make-over. It amazes me how color affects the soul and inspires learning. Take a tour and see what we have done. It is impressive.

3. Experimentation required Education is morphing fast. Schools are not delivering what companies need. Old paradigms are falling off quickly. Technology is changing how we teach. Classrooms are being “flipped” where instruction happens at home through one’s computer or iPad and homework is done in the class. Touring Monte Vista’s campus, I realized how quickly education is morphing. I knew then that we needed to challenge not what we teach, but how we do it. That was in April – five months ago. Since then, I have made five more trips to Monte Vista, bringing with me over fifty teachers, administrators, church staff and board members. Within thirty minutes of touring their campus, all were hooked. Later on, I came to learn that Steve Sharp is an Assembly of God minister who served under some of the same pastors I have. He invited my team in and gave away all his “secrets,” holding nothing back. He and his wife, Sheryl, even traveled to Valley to advise us on how to transform our campus. Steve was the one who also sent us Dave Johnson and his family. One day, while we talking about finding a Superintendent for Valley, Steve said, “Check out Dave. I told the Board if I die, Dave is the person to take over Monte Vista.” Dave and I spoke and he felt the Superintendent chair was not the right fit, but the Operations chair was more to his gifting. He came July 1st and has been running every since. Through it all, I have seen the gracious hand of God steer our schools and provide friends along the way. For now, I am still in the Superintendent chair, but my heart is excited because the future of education has come to Valley Christian through Steve Sharp and Monte Vista. We have always had stories to boast in with our students. Now we have the course, the atmosphere and the innovation that will “wow” any family that walks through our campus. Thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness and thank you, Holy Spirit, for making Steve Sharp a friend and mentor to Valley Christian Schools.

Valley Christian Preschool their families through devotionals, chapels, musical events, and many other activities.

Valley Christian Preschool is blessed with a talented and dedicated faculty, staff, administration, parent support team, and church body. Our licensed preschool program continues to grow and thrive as families of two to five year olds become a part of our everyday and then move on to our exceptional Elementary School. It is a unique blessing and honor to inspire a passion for Jesus Christ and to awaken God’s unique story in even the youngest of our little students! It is our desire to foster a spirit of community among all of our families. This began with our Ice Cream Social in September and continued throughout the school year with our Preschool Harvest Festival, Thanksgiving Feast, Birthday Party for Jesus, Christmas Musical, Easter Celebration and Prayer, Muffins for Moms, Donuts for Dads, Art Show and Science Fair, and then concluded with our Promotion and Awards. The Preschool had tremendous support from our leaders, from both school and church, who participated regularly to bless the children and

As we look back on this year, it is clear that the Preschool’s community spirit of volunteering and loving those around the world with the love of Jesus Christ has continued through the collection of giftfilled shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child and donated food items throughout the year to the TriValley Food Bank. The Preschool continues to deliver an excellent Early Education program using a broad selection of teaching methods and techniques that are developmentally appropriate to cultivate the “whole” child, helping them grow and succeed academically, spiritually, physically, socially, and emotionally. Our dedicated teaching and administrative staff have continued to grow professionally by attending exciting and innovative training seminars, as well as, by participating in college level classes pertaining to early childhood development. At Valley Christian Preschool, we continue to see each child as a unique and special gift created by God, and we are dedicated to our mission of providing a superior preschool education for generations to come.

Valley Christian Elementar y The following students placed 1st and 2nd in their age groups among participating Dublin elementary schools in the Dublin Women’s Club Art Contest: 1. Olivia Russo | First Place, 2nd – 3rd grades division 2. Kristy Lee | 2nd Place, 2nd – 3rd grades division 3. Praise Wong | 2nd Place, 4th grade division The Mayor of Dublin, in an awards ceremony, honored these 3 students at Dublin City Hall. In alignment with our ACSI and WASC standards, our Expected School-Wide Learning Result (ESLR) focused on the Independent Learner. It was also our first year to implement our fifth grade Student Council as part of our Strategic Plan initiative. We successfully integrated our Small Group Instruction (SGI) classes and offered a pull out program to support our full student body. We transitioned to an Inclusion Model and provided targeted intervention and support in reading, math, and other academic areas. Spanish comes to VCES! The first graders are able to pray and create and read simple sentences with the vocabulary they have already learned. Next year the Spanish program will expand to include second grade. Each year thereafter we will add an additional grade until all grade levels are included. On May 19, our students participated in the ACSI Elementary Academic Meet. Ed Hubbard, Chairman of the event, said, “Once again, you sent the most delegates of any participating school. What is most impressive is your scores -- especially in Math. It looks like you continue to prepare your students.” Our students amassed 22 blue ribbons. Our Talented and Gift students (TAG) also competed in the Math Olympics with nine placing with medal and ribbon standings. 28.

Student and parent participation in reaching “beyond these walls” was once again embraced enthusiastically. Donations of food to the Children’s Emergency Food Bank, hundreds of shoe boxes donated to Operation Christmas Child and gifts to Agape Village Foster families were just several of the organizations helped this year. Learning takes place in a variety of settings outside the classroom. Kindergarten classes learned how pumpkins grow at the pumpkin patch, first grade students grew a vegetable garden, second grade taught us the stories of many of our true patriots through their Patriotic Musical, third grade learned more about science as they attended Chabot Space and Science Center, fourth grade studied missions in San Juan Bautista and fifth grade attended Handel’s Messiah Ballet Company production where students experienced the cultural fine arts. Our after school Enrichment Classes are also an excellent way we have grown the learning experience outside of the typical classroom setting. We were able to offer Mandarin, Spanish, Ballet, Kids Can Act, Computer, Band, Choir and Art. Matthew 2: 37 – 40 were our theme verses for the year. To love the Lord with all of heart, soul and mind and our neighbor as ourselves is what we have tried to instill in the heart of every student who walks through the doors of Valley Christian Elementary School.

Valley Christian Junior High & High School “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33 As we entered into the 2011-12 school year, we went with anticipation of great things that we would see through the ministry to junior high and high school students. The transformation of the student body came with many successes and some challenges that refined the spiritual, social, athletic, artistic and academic character of each student. Students were challenged with the thought that in order for Christ to be first in our life, we must recede to the place of second. Each chapel was dedicated to placing Christ first and this was expanded upon by Donnie Moore and Eddie Rentz during our Spiritual Emphasis Week. In the classroom, teachers continued to pour their lives into each student as they prayed over, counseled, laughed, cried and celebrated victories through Christ. LifeScript was introduced to the sophomore class as part of the curriculum and met tremendous success in helping students understand their calling and refine their passion. 2011-2012 demonstrated the strength of athletics represented by the Vikings on the Hill. Each team in our Junior High and High School was either competing for a league title, division title or a title for the North Coast Section of CIF. Valley Christian athletics won 6 league championships for high school athletics and 3 division championships for junior high. In total, 14 team banners were placed on the gymnasium wall for league, division and NCS championships achieved, along with multiple CIF Scholastic Team Awards for maintaining highest team GPA in our division. Artistically, we saw Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz on the stage along with Charlie’s Aunt and The Real Women of Mother Goose. Each performance demonstrated the growing strength of our Performing and Visual Arts Departments and how multiple teachers and directors have dedicated their time to the development of the students. Our Arts Night was held at Blackhawk Museum for an evening showcasing the artistic giftedness of our students. More than 400 works of art by students in photography, graphic design, fine art, and sculpture were on display. The achievements of high school visual art students were honored by numerous 1st,

2nd, 3rd place awards in local, regional and state art competitions sponsored by public and private organizations. A bridge has been built through the arts spanning elementary through high school and soon will venture into preschool. As we look to the future, each director and student-performer is eagerly awaiting the completion of the Sanctuary so the arts can expand beyond the walls of our current facilities. Academically, micro and macroeconomics, music appreciation, dance, and concert band were introduced to the academic rigor of high school. Students thrived in our Advanced Placement courses and Calculus AB, Microeconomics, Physics B and US History realized a 100% pass-rate on the AP exams. 28 of our students were recognized as AP Scholars and this not only speaks highly of the giftedness of our students, but also to the strength and dedication of our teachers. Our junior high and high school students demonstrated academic strength throughout the year and we saw the culmination of 69 of our students as they walked across the stage to receive their diploma signifying a job well done. Multiple seniors received academic scholarships to the universities of their choice, and three seniors are now serving our country in the military with one receiving an appointment to the Air Force Academy. In support of the academic environment, we have begun changes to the interior of the high school building through color, furnishings and technology. We are stepping into the world of iPad technology in the classroom and the infrastructure was put in place to support the expansion of student learning. This year saw the finalization of plans for the development of our Science Center, sports field, Campus Café and entryway to the high school. The excitement continues to build with the students as they are given continued support for their pursuit of their calling and passion.

Vision for our Valley VCC has been blessed with people over our 49 years of existence who saw the vision, heard the call and met the need to sacrifice and contribute for our existing facilities. Our current call is clear, we are to reach the valley below with the “Good News” of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our new Sanctuary is an important part of this assignment that was officially started on June 6, 2010. This facility will not only provide a more inspiring setting for worship but it will also: • double our existing seating capacity • provide private areas for nursing mothers • increase restroom facilities, and perhaps most significantly, • make the current worship building available for the needs of our adult and youth ministries as well as our principle ministry: Valley Christian Schools. Make sure you take time to look and celebrate the progress we have made on constructing God’s new House of Worship at Valley Christian Center. This amazing journey would not be possible without God’s blessings, your prayers and support. We have come a long way on this journey, completing Phase 1 and Phase 2A. Phase 2B is underway and Phase 3 is being planned.

Phase 3 Cost: Status: Included:

$1.3 million $1.3 million yet to be raised The exterior and interior finishing work, heating and air conditioning, etc. The interior furnishings and sound system were not included in the scope of building the Sanctuary. We currently estimate these additional costs to be $750,000.

We currently need $2.9 million dollars to complete the new Sanctuary. Our current focus is on raising the $300,000 necessary to pay for the completion of the building exterior. This is the focus of our current new Sanctuary fund raising. As you know, we are also in the process of selling the 1.4 acres of property at the bottom of Inspiration Drive for $1 million dollars. The process is slow with all of the city requirements and unexpected surprises like a small piece of frontage property adjoining ours that the City of Dublin owns. This process will continue and God willing we will sell it for a fair price. In the mean time, we are continuing to plan a future fund raising campaign that will permit the completion of our new Sanctuary.

WOM EN Our annual Women’s Retreat seemed to produce an anthem of sorts: “We’ve been to the mountaintop We’ve seen the glory of our God He is here in the valley low He’s here I feel it in my bones Our God here and now We are the body of our God” Mountaintop by City Harmonic Our retreat committee leaders, Tawni Garcia and Olga Bahu, along with our retreat speaker heard from the Lord while preparing for our retreat that God would meet His daughters on the mountaintop. And meet us, He did! We had 95 women attend our retreat and it was a beautiful weekend with friends and the Holy Spirit. About 30 women experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and many others were encouraged in their faith through our speaker’s teachings. In addition to our retreat this year, our Women’s Bible Study groups continued to meet and allow women to meet with other women who are hungry for God’s Word. Our retreat committee also held a Spring Tea that doubled as a fundraiser for retreat scholarships. We are grateful for the generosity of our women as several women were able to attend retreat that normally wouldn’t be able to attend.

Worship Ar ts Here are a few areas where God used the Worship Arts Department this past year:

“Take me deeper, Lord.” That’s been my recent prayer. As a worshipper, I find myself unsatisfied with where I am, always looking for how I can enter into another level of God’s presence. I understand that I may never find “all of God.” Who can? His ways are not our ways. (Isaiah 55:8) Yet, the more I pursue Him, the more I see that the end goal is not what I think it is. God is pleased with my pursuit of Him. That’s all that matters. I continue to push aside my humanness to pursue a deeper spiritual life than I lived yesterday. Believe me, it’s not natural to my sin-nature. It’s hard work. But it’s my heart’s cry to a Holy God to take me deeper. What’s your cry?

Young Adults

Sometimes the phase of life we title “Young Adult” might as well be named the “In Between Stage.” Young Adults often find themselves in this between place of not being a “kid” anymore but not quite sure what it means to be an “adult” or going from having someone tell you what to do and how to do it to trying to figure out what you want to be and how to go about becoming such a person. It can be confusing. But, thank God for young adults who choose to be in a place of relationship with other young adults, a church family, and with God! Roots, our young adult ministry, had a fun year together! We gained a few people, lost a few who moved to new schools or places of life, but all along have grown in deeper friendships and love for God. A special Thank You to the Lietz Family for hosting us for many months!

Youth

Looking back over this past year, it is hard to choose a couple sentences to convey all of the amazing trips, experiences, friendships and fellowships that were birthed, but I will do my best to capture a few of them! T4 was able to join Pastor Jimi Merrell and his ministry at Night Strike on a few Friday nights this year and it was an awesome opportunity to share God’s love, pray with God’s people and experience the joy of giving. We are so excited to have the chance to do it again this fall. This past December, we hosted our third annual “New Years Eve Bash” with a focus of Restoring Feet While Restoring Faith. What an amazing night on the Hill with over 300 youth in attendance. Home-based Bible studies began Fall of 2011. Over forty students met Sunday afternoons to fellowship with one another while learning more about God’s Word and how His word can speak to their lives personally. We are really excited about the life-changing topics that we will be covering this year: YOUR YOUTH WILL NOT WANT TO MISS IT. This summer, thirty-six of us headed to Klamath Falls. Wow! What an amazing move of God that took place. We had three

water baptisms and an entire group embracing God’s nature and a spirit overflowing. This trip was a complete success! In August, over 29 of us joined together to travel to the Philippines with 30 boxes of clothes, shoes and toys. After three days from our arrival Metro Manila met with a typhoon that demolished thousands of homes and killed over 62 of its citizens. But God’s timing is perfect; we were able to feed over 1,000 children and families and bring mats and blankets to those that lost their homes. The clothing, shoes and toys were a blessing to many that lost everything in the storm. Although we thought we were coming to bless many, we were blessed beyond measure! Sunday Mornings LIVE was introduced this summer. This curriculum is for Junior and Senior High School students with over 144 lessons to assist youth through essential topics and truths for surviving and thriving through their teen-age years. This has been an amazing year; many youth have received
