get wisdom get understanding “Take this to heart. Do what I tell you—live! Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for Understanding! Don’t forget one word! Don’t deviate an inc h! Never walk away from Wisdom— she guards your life; love her—she keeps her eye on you. Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom! Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding! Throw your arms around her— believe me, you won’t regret it; never let her go— she’ll make your life glorious. She’ll garland your life with grace, she’ll festoon your days with beauty.” —Proverbs 4:6 (The Message)
introduction
from t h e S uperintendent Valley Christian Schools is truly on the Road to Excellence. The past year marked significant advances in key areas of our educational enterprise. Our progress has been fueled by creativity, innovation and team work. Our new strategic direction is galvanizing our community to make VCS a premiere school system in every way. We finalized a 5-Year Strategic Plan that drew upon direct input from every constituency served by the Schools. The Plan guides all of our activities leading to excellence. The strategic implementation process is now underway. Task Forces are advancing all 6 Strategic Initiatives in the Plan: Spiritual Formation, Academic Advancement, Expansion of the Arts, Athletic Excellence, Leadership Development and Facilities Expansion. Some of the advancements of the last year include: The debut of our Debate Team, the launching of a Wrestling Program for Junior High and High School, the re-introduction of Cheer Squads for Junior High and High School (with the Varsity Squad competing in the nationals), the first ever Varsity Football Team at Valley with an unprecedented showing in the state tournament by going all the way to the semi-finals, the introduction of a Choral Choir that graced us in multiple venues including Commencement, the assembling of 800 Artificial Hands for amputees around the world, community service programs that benefitted our Armed Services, as well as poor and needy locally, nationally and internationally, a first-ever VCS Missions Trip to an AIDS orphanage in Honduras, the addition of a Grass Play Field behind the Elementary School, the planting of 35 Trees behind the Elementary School, and the addition of a K-12 Director of Curriculum and Instruction, who is advancing academics across the board. VCS is a strong college preparatory school as evidenced by our placement this year of our graduates into Harvard, Princeton, Berkeley, USC, UC San Diego, Emory and many other prestigious colleges around the nation. While proud of our 40-year history of achievement, we remain focused upon continual improvement. I firmly believe that our best days lie ahead of us. Please join me and my wonderful team of teachers, pastors, coaches, support staff and parent volunteers in paving the Road to Excellence for every student that enters our halls. Respectfully yours in the Lord,
Pastor John Moran, EdM Superintendent of Schools PA S T O R J O H N M O R A N , S U P E R I N T E N D E N T O F S C H O O L S

Valley Christian Schools is a community desiring to cultivate an environment that allows students to define and nurture their God-given purpose. The staff, teachers and administration are committed to partnering with parents and students to develop the distinct attributes that make each student unique. For this reason, we pride ourselves in helping students reach their goals – whether academically, socially, physically or spiritually. We accomplish this in the classroom by emphasizing critical thinking and problem solving, effective communication, independent learning, the application of Biblical principals and a Christian worldview, and through fostering students’ leadership abilities. In addition, our numerous sports programs along with extra-curricular clubs and enrichment programs help to create a well-rounded academic experience that teaches the whole student. At Valley Christian Schools, we believe that it is important for students to understand what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. We believe that God is knowable and personal, and by entering into a relationship of trust and obedience with Him, students can experience a transformed life and blessings beyond belief, both now and in eternity. Valley Christian Schools is honored to partner with our parent community as we work together to move your student beyond success to true significance. VA L L E Y C H R I S T I A N E L E M E N T A RY Valley Christian Elementary School has been serving the Tri-Valley area since its inception in 1970. We offer a Christ-centered, quality education taught by credentialed teachers. The aim of Valley Christian Elementary has always been to present the educational process in a manner that meets the academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the individual child and brings honor and glory to God. In order to meet this challenge, we have developed a comprehensive educational experience, which culminates in academic excellence, spiritual development, athletic distinction, creative expression and servant leadership. Valley Christian Elementary has consistently scored in the top ten percent in the nation in reading and math assessments. In 2004, we were awarded the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School status. This is due, in large part, to our superb teaching staff. Each classroom teacher possesses a teaching credential and regularly attends continuing educational courses, pertaining to their areas of expertise, in order to present the most current and relevant information to their students. We understand the role technology plays in our ever changing world. Our elementary computer lab features new MacBook laptop computers equipped with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
The central value of a Christian Education is that each student is valued as an individual created uniquely by God with infinite worth and potential. This belief guides our treatment of every student, and it informs the way we teach every subject. Jesus is the Master Teacher, and we strive to emulate His approach to teaching and learning. – Pastor John Moran
The lab is also fully networked allowing Internet research specific to curriculum needs. Our school filters and direct observation policy assure safe Internet browsing. Whether it is competing in an academic meet, math olympics, art festival or choral competition, our students are encouraged to have fun and enjoy the

process of learning in a competitive setting. This is an excellent environment to raise up our young leaders of tomorrow. Our weekly chapels encourage our students to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to become mature Christians. While instilling integrity along with personal and social responsibility, we encourage our students to become involved with service projects by offering many opportunities to serve throughout the year.

In addition to instruction in the core subjects, including Bible, auxiliary classes in computer science, library science, music, art, and physical education are a part of the curriculum. We offer Small Group Instruction (SGI) classes for children in first through fourth grades who have identified learning differences. VA L L E Y C H R I S T I A N P R E S C H O O L Healing Help for Ethiopia | Doctors Giving Back | The Preschool children and their families had the opportunity to share the wonderful love of our Lord with the people of Ethiopia. We provided “healing help” by responding to a dire shortage of over-the-counter medicines such as eye drops, first aid creams, stomach relief medication, and more. Many of our Preschool families also donated “reader” glasses to help clear away cloudy vision, shoes for sore feet, and gently used or new clothing for dignity. The medical teams led by our own Dr. John and Jana Turns worked many long hours each day meeting the needs of as many as they could and we were blessed to be part of the “back home” team! Mission to Mexico | We cleaned out our school supply boxes, craft rooms, and “Lost” but unclaimed clothing at the close of the 2009/10 school year. These items were donated to the Mission to Mexico team. The school and craft items were a great blessing as the team prepared to share the gospel with the children in Mexico through Vacation Bible School and our “unclaimed” clothing found new homes in Mexico. Tri-Valley Food Bank | The Preschool celebrated the “Week of the Young Child” by giving back to the community as we participated with other preschools in the area to donate food items for young families in need in the Tri-Valley area. Operation Christmas Child | The Preschool collected over 100 gift-filled shoeboxes and brought joy and hope to children around the world. Preschool Highlights •

We began to lay the groundwork for adding a new two-year old program. We saw the remodel of Sanctuary 1 and 2 as it was transformed into one large classroom with new flooring, sinks, and cabinets. We have put forth many long hours in meeting with the Dept. of Social Services Community Care Licensing Division, contractors, and more. A “Totally Twos” program is much needed in our area. We hope to soon receive the stamp of approval from Community Care Licensing and have the program up and running by early Fall 2010. Preschool enrollment remained strong for the 2009/10 school year. As a service to our families we offered health screenings in speech and hearing. We added a second session to our “Mad Science” enrichment class. All of our Preschool children enjoyed music and movement with Kathleen Rushing aka Bingo Schmingo. Mike Ruybalid aka Mr. Mike brought music to our after school program “Kid’s Club.” The Preschool teaching staff took advantage of many early childhood classes to earn continuing education units. Some of the classes we participated in: Teaching with Love and Logic; Bilingual Learners in ECE; Learning Disabled Child; Ooey Gooey Art for Young Children; and Sandbox Scientists. We were blessed to have the Jr/Sr. High Bible Leadership class under the direction of Pastor Jimi Merrell lead many of our Preschool Chapels and we also had a special visit from Pastor Jason. Preschool Special Events included our Ice Cream Social, Harvest Days, Thankful Feasts, Christmas Programs, Art Show and Science Fair, field trips, promotion ceremonies, and more!
