Helping to inform and unite the Community

Editorial This has been the most difficult editorial to compose. The Valley News has always been a community magazine which focuses on its key purpose to inform and unite this community; we have always shied away from letters pages and controversial comment, relying only on providing factual information and allowing everyone to make their own judgements. We have avoided politics as well - for similar reasons. However, given the current situation in Europe, it behoves us to make comment, given the number of conversations about it that we know have been taking place locally. No one can doubt that there is a huge humanitarian crisis at the heart of Europe. The response of governments and ordinary people across Europe has been unbelievable; the generosity of families in Poland especially, but in many other countries too, has been absolutely inspiring. In this country, collections of clothing and essential goods have been generous in the extreme, and the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for cash contributions soared to over £100 million in very short order. As this editorial is written, the UK Government has announced ways that people can get involved in hosting Ukrainian refugees, and the initial response has again been heart-warming. It is also worthy of note that Russians are demonstrating their feelings, with significant numbers actually emigrating from Russia and becoming refugees in turn as their way of protesting against such cruel barbarism. It is hard to credit what has happened to Ukraine and the world in 2022. Closer to home, it was heartening to read in last month’s magazine of the efforts being made to welcome a refugee family into Blandford. It will be good to hear how that initiative has progressed in due course. It seems a cruel irony that all this is happening when we should be enjoying a momentous year for our Queen - her Platinum Jubilee. It has been good to learn that events are being organised locally to enable us to join in with the celebrations. Perhaps it is even more important that we continue with our traditional ways of celebrating and coming together at this time, as we remember that the freedoms that we enjoy were hard won in the past and should never be taken for granted. The Valley News Team Please note: We previously explained that Anne Donnelly would be leaving her role coordinating our advertising. This edition will be her last. We paid tribute to her at that time but we would like to thank Anne once again for all she has done for the Valley News. Her move to Devon is getting closer and we wish her and Nick every happiness in their new home. Carolyn Walsham has already begun to take up the reins as our new coordinator, and our thanks go to her for volunteering to join our team. We are sure that everyone will give her every support as she takes up this role ready for the next edition on the Valley News.
Winterborne Whitechurch Parish Council Meeting on 26th January 2022 DC Cllr John Worth (Chair) DC Cllr Cherry Brooks Cllr Liam Deeney with Mr Rob Turley (Clerk), and 11 members of the general public. The Chair started on a serious matter that: Last week it was disclosed that one of the applicants seeking co-option had contacted clerks from other nearby Parish Councils purporting to be the new chair elect of WWPC and the clerk had handed in his resignation and he was seeking if any other local clerk was interested in taking on the Clerk’s role. As the clerk’s resignation was not in the public domain and was confidential and only 3 Cllr & CEO of DAPTC would have been aware, so not sure how he found out about this? A potential co-opted person cannot assume that they would be the chair of this Parish Council. Current investigations are ongoing by a Dorset Council officer. If that person is co-opted and it is found that they were this person after signing the acceptance of Office it did breach the code of conduct. If they own up now and withdraw the matter ends here. The Co-option of applicants to become Councillors began and each applicant gave a short introduction about themselves and each was asked the same question by the Chair regarding his earlier statement. Following the decision-making process of the three Councillors – and a subsequent discussion with one candidate – a candidate withdrew their application and the remaining 5 applicants were co-opted. The new Councillors then took their seats on the Parish Council The new Chair Cllr Liam Deeney was then voted in and the Temporary Chair resigned as did the other Temporary Councillors. Draft Budget & Financial Update The Clerk/ Financial Officer provided a Financial Statement with a proposed budget for the coming year and a suggested Precept for the coming year 2022/23 plus Income & Payments to date with current reconciliation of Bank Accounts. After a short discussion the Chair proposed acceptance of this with four in favour and one abstained. The Clerk provided a list of duties for the councillors for them to decide on who does what. Dates for the rest of the year to be decided later. New Councillors are Angela Erkan, Andrew Howard, Helen Hakimzadeh, Ricky Trim and Steven Pringle with Liam Deeney as new Chair. Meeting 23rd February 2022 Cllr Liam Deeney (Chair) LD Cllr Steven Pringle SP Cllr Helen Hakimzadeh HH Cllr Angela Erkan AE Cllr Ricky Trim RT Cllr Andrew Howard AH with Rob Turley Clerk and 6 members of the general public Items discussed include approval of Minutes for 26th January a discussion regarding Naturalis' offer to discuss community benefits funding associated with their project. After a short discussion it was agreed to accept the offer to discuss this in a separate meeting. Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: It was suggested that a tree was obtained and placed in Fields Close Fields Close Roundabout: it was agreed again to write to Dorset Highways regarding the issue for a final time. A request from St Mary’s PCC for a donation towards the grass cutting in the graveyard was made and following a short discussion it was agreed to again donate the amount of £700. The Clerk to provide a list of courses available for New Councillors. The courses are available from the following week on zoom; he would send details to all councillors. Councillors Duties Agreed THE NEXT MEETING WAS AGREED TO BE ON 9TH March at 7pm. For further details of these meetings please look on http://winterbornewhitechurchparishcouncil.org.uk or on one of the three Notice Board in the village.
Winterborne Valley and Milton Abbas Benefice In the middle ages laughter was banned during the season of Lent, therefore the Pope encouraged Clergy to begin their Easter Sunday sermons with a joke. Last Easter my alarm went off at 5am after a fitful night’s sleep. It felt like a joke but not of the kind I expect the Pope was envisioning. Some of us gathered early that morning, very early. It was dark and cold and we huddled as much as social distancing allowed, around a fire outside the doors of St Andrew’s Winterborne Houghton. The new Benefice Paschal (Easter) candle was lit from the bonfire. A simple flame that whispered to us that darkness hadn’t won the day. We then lit our own candles from it and that whisper became louder as we proclaimed that Christ is Risen. The days of Holy Week invite us to journey through the full range of human emotions including the tiredness of rising at 5am on Easter Sunday to watch the sunrise and to make the declaration, as the sunlight overtakes the darkness, that Christ is Risen, He is Risen indeed, Alleluia. There is something significant and deeply spiritual about making this journey with others. The highs and lows, the laughter and the tears, the faith and the doubts. All are welcome to join us as we begin this Easter journey anew, however tentative you may feel about doing this. You will find all of the details below and 3

Business included one planning application P/HOU/2022/00868 seeking the Council’s advisory agreement, which was given. Cllr Andrew Kerby of Dorset Council attended and gave Unitary Councillor’s report. This included significant response time improvements in Land Searches following the large rise through Covid period. He also advised that Dorset will play a starring role when the Tour of Britain, the UK’s most prestigious cycle race, heads here for the County first time ihis year. Dorset will host the penultimate stage of the race on Saturday 10th September. Cllr Val Pothecary, will be hosting a Beacon Lighting event on the evening of 2nd June 2022 at Durlston Country Park to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Town and Parish Councils have asked if they will participate by registering and lighting their own beacons on this date at the same time, 9.15pm. The council discussed the issue of vehicles speeding in the village. Entrance gates or further signage for the village was discussed. Cllr Kerby will be contacting the Police asking for an enforcement visit to the village. The problem of parking on the pavements in North Street was raised. As guidance you are currently permitted to partially park your car on the pavement; however, it must not be causing an obstruction. Anna Way attended the meeting. Anna has agreed to attend the WSSCC AGM in March where she will be elected on to the Committee and taking on the running of the Sports Club as the future Chair. Any resident interested in assisting Anna should contact Anna or The Parish Council Clerk in the first instance at wsticklandpc@gmail.com. Progress is being made with setting up a Youth Club in the village. The heating/boiler at the Club is currently not working and Cllr Jubb is working with a plumber to fix the problem The River Management Plan has now been reviewed and the suggestions are evaluated. Other Business The renovated memorial site is being appreciated by more than just the village. It has become a favourite stop off for cyclists on the National Cycle Route. This group said at the weekend it is now one of their favourite places to stop.

Milton Abbas Local History Group The Milton Abbas Local History Group have two active research groups - The Old Town Project and Word War I. They are both busy finding new information and writing up their findings. The Old Town project is aimed at finding what happened to the people, rich and poor, and buildings during Joseph Damer's destruction of the market town which was located just south of Milton Abbey Church. How did they survive this traumatic event and what was life like for those who were forced to move to the new village? There was a clause in their new leases (1780 onwards) that the tenant "... shall not nor will keep or permit or suffer to be kept any Inn Tavern Alehouse Victualling house or place of publick entertainment in or upon the premises or any part thereof or use or convert or permit or suffer the same to be used or converted into or for any Inn Tavern Alehouse Victualling house or place of publick entertainment during his Tenancy….". There was a further clause preventing them from having lodgers, which was done specifically to prevent the grammar school and its boarders from receiving visitors. No doctor was allowed to live here either. A 'closed' village indeed! Perhaps the people from Milton Abbas went to the pubs in Stickland, Whitechurch, or Houghton for a jar of ale. We have most of the documents which are available already, but we have still got to explore the Quarter Sessions records and the archives of the Western Gazette. If you are interested in this part of our history then please do get in touch - we would love to hear from you. One of our members has made a huge effort to identify the people living in each house of The Street from the 1841 and 1851 Censuses. This was no easy task because the houses were not identified or numbered by the enumerators, and it is not possible to know which houses were doubles. We have used the 1806 Survey, the 1852 Sale catalogue, the Land Tax assessments and newspaper articles to identify who lived where. Some interesting facts emerge: in 1851 there were eight women in the six almshouses average age 78 and the eldest 98! On Wednesday 6 April our talk will be from a local member who lives in Houghton and concerns the local Commonwealth War Graves and how to distinguish them from other military graves – not always easy! There are a lot of War Graves in our part of Dorset, with most of our local churches having at least one and sometimes more. Besides Frank Churchill in Milton Abbas there are 2 war graves at Stickland, 1 at Whitechurch, 3 at Milborne St Andrew and 3 at Hilton. The presentation will discuss the stories behind the casualties. Do come along and join us, and find out about our shared history.
The Blandford Group Practice Covid-19 Spring Booster Programme The Practice is working with the Dorset health system as a whole to deliver this next phase of the vaccination programme. The Dorset health system will also be hosting additional pop up sites, which will be widely advertised before they take place. If you are an older adult who is a care home resident or housebound patient eligible for the vaccination there will be arrangements put in place for a health care professional to visit you to administer your vaccine, please bear with the system whilst this is organised. Please could we request that if you are reading this notice please share with relatives or neighbours who will be eligible for the vaccination.

have to do is change the stainless steel blade every now and then, why didn’t I do that 30 years ago and how many plastic razors must I have used in that time? We hope we’ve tempted you to think about the products that you use and what you can change. There are small changes we can all make that will accumulatively make a difference. Why not give it a go, it honestly makes you feel better that you’re doing your bit, once you start to make small changes you’ll be surprised at others you can easily make. You can visit Dorseteco at Dorchester weekly Wednesday market or the monthly markets in either Swanage, Westbourne or Weymouth plus larger county events across the year or online - see our advert for more details. Thanks for reading my article, Snapper – Dorseteco
Music for Holy Week Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir will present a programme of music for Holy Week in Milton Abbey on Sunday 3 April 2022 at 3.30 pm. The resonant acoustic and beautiful surroundings of Milton Abbey provide the perfect setting for a programme of sublime music from across the centuries. The programme includes two settings of the Miserere that the choir are particularly looking forward to singing - Allegri’s famous version with its top C for the solo soprano, together with a very moving setting by contemporary composer James MacMillan. The programme also includes ‘Maria plena virtute’ by Robert Fayrfax, a Tudor version of the Seven Last Words of Christ from the cross, an eloquent and moving evocation of the Crucifixion of Our Lord. To help keep everyone safe this will be an afternoon concert of about an hour without an interval as we celebrate the return of singing after a long enforced silence. Tickets (£12, £2 under 18) are available from the choir website (www.bschoir.org.uk) or at the door.
HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Help us to celebrate by knitting and crafting! Are you a keen crafter looking for your next project? Why not join in and help us to create items to celebrate the big event of the year! You can knit, crochet or sew members of the Royal Family, their pets, crowns, ‘houses’, bunting, tea cozies or other items for a Royal Tea Party – no limits to your imagination! Think of sunny days in June when we will celebrate by organising a special event or two to show off your donated creations, and let your imagination take over. All items will then be sold to raise money for Royal Voluntary Service and our work in the community. So please spread the word, get started and let me know what you are making; photos are always great and look good on our Facebook page. Any questions please contact Maria Jacobson, Service Manager Dorset Home Library Service, tel. 07786 635154 or e-mail maria.jacobson@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk.
Briantspuddle Singers Having not performed together as a group for over two years during the pandemic Briantspuddle Singers are very much looking forward to staging a concert of Lent music in the prestigious and beautiful Milton Abbey on Saturday 9th April at 7.30pm. We will be performing the ever-popular Crucifixion by Stainer, accompanied by local musicians playing the Abbey’s Willis organ and the chamber organ owned by the DRMS. Also on the programme are popular pieces by Victoria, Viadana, Handel, Mozart, Brahms, Vaughan Williams, ending with two joyful and exuberant works by recent composers – Richard Shephard and Alan Bullard. Choir members are all eagerly anticipating this chance to come together to sing once again in these lovely surroundings, and look forward to welcoming a large and enthusiastic audience to share their love of music during these still very challenging times. Tickets for this event are £12.50 and are available at the door, from any choir member or tel: 01929 554055
Advice appointments available for the deaf community The Advice Team at Diverse Abilities has been appointed 12 months’ funding to help provide more support for people who are deaf or speech impaired and rely on communication support. The cost of British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters attending appointments can now be paid by the Advice Team on behalf of the person seeking advice, as well as covering the cost of the appointment itself. These appointments cover benefit applications, appeals, and Lasting Power of Attorney applications, all important to helping those with disabilities secure the support they need to live their day to day lives. Elaine Ewing, Advice Team manager, commented: “This is a fantastic start to 2022, it really is great to know that we can further support deaf children and adults, and their families, all while being able to cover the operating costs.” One recent client who has benefitted from the service added: “After several failed applications, Diverse Abilities helped me to complete the DLA application for my eldest daughter and it was successful. My other daughter also had a DLA application, Diverse Abilities assisted with this, and it was successful on the first application. The team has assisted me and provided me with the BSL communication support that I needed. I could not have done it without their help.” The Advice Team is a not-for-profit service, part of Dorset’s disability charity, and provides support and guidance in all manner of disability requirements including Blue Badge Applications, Carers Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, Child Disability Living Allowance and more. Elaine continued: “While this funding is initially for one year, we’re hoping to continue the service afterwards as we know just how vitally important it is for our community. Hopefully this first year will prove how necessary it is and encourage the case for it to continue.” Visit diverseabilities.org.uk/advice to find out more or call 0300 330 5514.
Dorseteco your local eco friendly product store Many of you may know me as ‘Snapper’ from Winterborne Whitechurch, my family and I have lived in the valley for over 25 years, I’m best known (I hope!) for working at Dunbury for nearly 18 of those years. Well I have now left the school to follow my passion and to try and do something for the planet. Just before lockdown I started a company called Dorseteco. The aim of Dorseteco is simply to encourage others to think about what they are buying for everyday use around the home that might be a better choice for the environment. I started to investigate using things like beeswax wraps and making my own (instead of cling film) and then decided there were lots of little changes I could make in my life that would add up to making a difference to the planet. I thought to myself that there must be plenty of other like minded people out there who would like to start making changes but don’t quite know where to start, it can be quite a daunting prospect. I simply choose products that I believe will make easy swaps, for instance I’ve always habitually bought the same green scourers but I had no idea (maybe naively) that they were full of plastic, so I now use a coconut scourer. The obvious easy swaps are water bottles, I never go anywhere without my trusted stainless steel water bottle, bamboo toothbrushes (rather than the plastic ones we’re so used to) or products such as make up wipes that are washable and reusable (instead of single use cotton wool which uses harmful chemicals to create it in the first place). Another light bulb moment for me (this maybe too much information for some so look away now) was the habit of buying disposable razors, Men are used to their Gillette 23’s or whatever number of blades they are now up to but I continued to buy those horrible disposable razors in packs of 6, I’m not really sure why, other than habit – but not any more, I have a real bamboo razor and all I
