Editorial This month sees a thin edition of the magazine – hardly surprising given the times and circumstances in which we live. It is the last time we publish before February. As regular readers will know, we thought some months ago that we might be in a position to start producing a printed copy for February, but as things continue to be so uncertain, we will keep that decision under review. We’ll issue a printed version when we feel there is enough content to warrant one, and of course when it is safe to ask our team of volunteer distributors to start their rounds again. Until then, we’ll continue with the online version. One bonus of the online version is that we have been able to reproduce colour photographs! Many people have commented on now much they have enjoyed seeing them. Sadly, it is unlikely given the expense of printing colour that we will be able to put colour into the printed magazines, but we will keep them in the online version if we can. Do send in your photographs of special views and moments – they are appreciated. It is sad to report that Joan Wellstead has passed away in hospital after a short illness. Joan was a dedicated deliverer of the Valley News for many years; she believed in a strong local community where everyone looked out for each other, and she will be very much missed by all who knew her and the contributions she made as a teacher at the school in Stickland and a volunteer for many activities. Her dedication to the tennis club was a special enjoyment for her, and many people will have benefitted from her coaching. We send our condolences to Simon and Mary and the rest of her family. No one knows quite what this year’s Christmas will look like – or who will be able to get together, whether because of COVID restrictions or because people decide to stay safe, and whether any vaccines will be available beforehand to help with these decisions. Some suggestions have been made to move Christmas to Easter and Easter to the summer, just for this year! Whatever happens in your homes, the whole Valley News team sends you Season’s Greetings, and hopes that you can find some Christmas spirit that will help us all through these difficult times. We wish you a Happy Christmas and the thought that next year should be better than 2020. The Valley News Team
Churches in the Winterborne Valley and Milton Abbas Just before December this year we enter into the Church season of Advent. For us it begins four Sundays before Christmas, some years leaving us waiting a few days to open up the first door on our chocolate Advent calendars on the 1st December. Advent can often be the most difficult season to engage with as we are thrown forward to Christmas so quickly. It’s been said that perhaps we should just ignore Advent with its themes of waiting, longing and hoping. That we should move on from the fasting of Advent to the feasting of Christmas as quickly as possible. We light the candles on the Advent wreath, for four Sundays lighting the next in turn. Finally at Midnight Mass we light the final candle as Advent turns into the 12 days of Christmas. Yet this year we have been experiencing the themes of Advent for some time. As I write, it has just been announced that there is a possible vaccine for Covid-19. It is announced cautiously, with the warning that it still has checks to go through before any thought of rolling it out on a massive scale. We wait, hoping and longing for this vaccine to work. There is anticipation and yet we can do nothing more than wait. Advent draws us into a season when we can see in the distance the hope of Jesus born as a vulnerable baby, God taking on human flesh and how this changes everything. We can see it and each year we enter however hesitantly into the feeling that hope is coming. However, for it to be a celebration we must journey like those wise men of old, across desert and rocky plains to meet God at the manger. Although this year we have an idea of what our Advent and Christmas services will look like, our plans may have to change and adapt quickly as coronavirus guidance is updated. What we do know is that we will celebrate the birth of Christ, it will look different to previous years but it will happen. The best way to keep up to date is via our website (https://wvmabenefice.uk) or our Facebook page, the snappily titled ‘Churches in the Winterborne Valley and Milton Abbas.’ We will be running for the first time ‘Stations of the Nativity.’ Outside each of

Milton Abbas Local History Group A huge thankyou to those members who have supported us in these difficult times by joining our group. Despite losing some local members, we have gained as many from far and wide - Portsmouth, Yorkshire, Canada, and Australia. We also owe a debt to those members of our two subgroups - Old Town Project, and WWI, for their continued enthusiasm and research. If anyone is interested in our work then have a look at our website to see what we are doing and contact us there. We have had two very stimulating and successful meetings with our Old Town Project group using ZOOM. It is an enjoyable and effective way of meeting without infringing Covid rules. However, one does miss the convivial chat over tea and biscuits. Like everyone else, we do look forward to meeting together again. We also had a ZOOM meeting with our main group, it was lovely to see friendly faces again, and everyone was so enthusiastic. Our member in Ottawa, Canada was up at 05:30 local time - now that's dedication! Bryan Phillips gave a presentation on what peasant life was like on the Milton Abbey manor a long, long time ago, 1317 in fact! This is the date of the survey and custumal of the Abbey, which gives the tenants' names, their land holdings and how much work they had to do for the lord of the manor, that is the Abbot. They really were serfs, what we would today call slaves. Tied to the land they could not leave, they had to get permission to marry, they could not educate their children, they had to pay many taxes, they had to work many days from dawn to dusk on the Lord's land, he owned them and their goods, and that is after the church took a tenth of their produce every year for tithes. A hard life indeed - this was no golden age! Brown bread, cheese and pottage was their diet. The labour services on Milton Abbey manors do seem to be harsh when compared to other landowners. There is so much information in the Milton Abbey custumal that we have only scratched the surface. There are 500 named individuals in the 13 manors, of which 160 are here in Middeltone as it was then called. We recently watched a three part documentary series on Channel 5 - The Great Plague 1665 - fascinating. It is available on catch-up. We are following this up with research on the parish register and Churchwarden's Accounts of Milton Abbas to see what the impact was here. Some of our members are beginning to research the 19th century when many more records survive. We would be particularly interested in house deeds which give lots of information. The Union Workhouse must have many stories to tell too. If you would like to explore history, then please contact us. There is so much to do, and so many opportunities for joining in……. We wish everyone a very happy Christmas.
The Blandford Group Practice Whilst we recognise that the practice is desperately trying to retain as many medical procedures and services as possible throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the recent upturn in cases necessitates that it reacts to the current elevated risks with regards to health and safety issues, in order to safe guard the wellbeing of all its many patients and members of staff. Steroid injections and minor surgery are currently not being offered as their implementation can significantly increase the risk and are unadvisable during the pandemic. The minor injuries units situated in Wimborne and Shaftesbury are still available, but patients must make a telephone appointment with the units prior to attending. The MIUs can help with: • sprains and strains / broken bones / injuries to the back, shoulder and chest • wound infections / minor burns and scalds / insect and animal bites • minor head injuries / minor eye injuries The ear syringing procedure is also no longer generally available at the Practice; however, such procedures are available locally at a cost. Before ringing the GP, patients with joint pain, strains or other injuries are encouraged to visit https://www.dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/msk-home which gives advice and guidance for managing these conditions and information how to self-refer to physio services without first needing a GP referral. Groups for W/C 9th November Sadly most of our Groups have had to stop due to Lockdown, if you need any support you can still stay in touch with us, either find your preferred group on face book or contact Sara. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all again soon. Fibromyalgia Chronic Pain and Fatigue - Thursday - via Zoom Contact Anna on their Face Book page for info if you would like to join them - Blandford Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain and Fatigue Speer Support group. PTSD - Currently patients are being contacted by telephone, contact Sara for info. As ever we are always looking for more volunteers to join our Befrienders. If you have an hour or two a week to spare to chat to someone contact me. Winterborne Arts & Crafts Fayre 2020 We have gone virtual! Due to Covid issues and the latest Lockdown, it has not been possible to hold our planned Arts and Crafts Fayre this year. Our website has been set up in order to showcase Arts & Crafts that have been created by people local to the Winterborne Valley area. Some of the work is made by crafters who run a business, however, much of the work is made by hobbyists. Dorset Farmers Mental Health Survey Do you work in farming or know someone that does? We need YOUR help... We are facing a mental health crisis, further impacted by coronavirus - and our local farming communities are particularly vulnerable due to high levels of poor mental health. In Dorset, a group has come together to help tackle farmer's mental health. They include: Farming Community Network (FCN), National Farmers Union (NFU), Dorset Council, Dorset Healthcare, Dorset Mind, Dorset Mental Health Forum, Dorset Police and Steps to Wellbeing. The group aims to increase awareness of wellbeing within farming and provide a range of targeted support such as signposting, training and events; that are easily accessed when someone needs urgent help. We've developed a short anonymous survey to start to identify people's current understanding of mental health and whether there are any gaps in services. The survey should take approx. 5 minutes to complete - please follow this link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/XYBFG99 For any further information, please email Nick at nickviney@hotmail.com Appeal For Information Following Burglary Near Blandford Officers investigating a burglary near Blandford are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Between 7pm and 9pm on Thursday 22 October 2020 access was gained to a property in Milton Abbas and a number of tools were taken. The stolen items included a Makita plunge saw, drill, reciprocating saw, jig saw, chainsaw, multi tool, batteries and charger. A number of the items were marked with the initials ‘MC’. Police Constable David Rudenko, of Blandford police, said: “We are continuing to make enquiries into this burglary and I am appealing for anyone with information that might assist our investigation to please come forward. “I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who has come across items matching the descriptions given above being offered for sale locally in unusual circumstances.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk, via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55200159639. Alternatively, to stay 100 per cent anonymous, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or call Freephone 0800 555 111. Theft from Motor Vehicle Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward after a theft from a vehicle in the area of Turnworth. The theft happened between 1pm and 3.30 pm on Tuesday 10th November at the car park to Ringmoor in which a handbag was stolen. Officers are reminding members of the public not to leave valuables in the vehicles – thieves know all of the hiding places. Follow this link for crime prevention advice on keeping your vehicle safe from thieves - https://www.dorset.police.uk/help-advice-crimeprevention/ Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk, via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting incident number 55200169584. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Enhanced Rural Crime Patrols Last night [3/11/2020] officers have been conducting Op Galileo dedicated patrols in rural areas. We have been in the North, East and South of the county. The drone was deployed to cover large areas of ground looking for poachers who may have been looking to take advantage of the clear conditions. As the nights get longer we often see a increase in poaching activity this time of year. Multiple vehicles have been stopped, including one found driving through the fields (luckily it was the farmer on his way home). We have also stopped vehicles capable of carrying stolen plant machinery and quad bikes. Likewise we have been working with the Council tonight and followed up on fly tipping intelligence received from the public.
Greetings from Corfe Mullen! Have just heard the sad news about Joan Wellstead's death. Another huge character from the valley gone. I remember her with great fondness teaching my boys to play tennis in the school holidays! She will be sadly missed by a great many people. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Christmas and may next year be a far happier one - God bless you all. From Heather and Des.
Dorset Home Library Service – Doorstep Deliveries Although our much-loved Home Library Service had to be suspended due to the Coronavirus situation, we are now providing a temporary non-contact Doorstep Delivery Service to those that cannot easily get to their local library, either short term or long term. Our volunteers have strict safety guidelines and all necessary risk assessments have been carried out. Books are chosen by staff at each library, based on individual preferences, and made ready for our volunteers to pick up and deliver to our clients’ front doors. The volunteers will not enter the house, and they will keep a safe distance at all times; they can also pick up books and return them to the library. This service is entirely free and is available across Dorset and BCP areas. We are keen to let more people know that it is available to them if they find themselves unable to get to the library. To find out more please contact Maria Jacobson, Service Manager Dorset Home Library Service, on 01305 236666 or 07786 635154, or e-mail maria.jacobson@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk
Dorset Alerts Property Marking and Serial Number Recording Recently during our work we have conducted a number of warrants at various premises across our county and we have recovered suspected stolen items. When we try and locate an owner for these items we have found items not marked with any identifying marks, they aren’t fitted with DNA products or when we have checked the Police system the serial numbers aren’t on the system this is because they were never provided to police at the time that the crimes were recorded or because the incidents were never reported to Dorset Police. Today PCSO 6386 and PC 350 have been working our way through items trying to locate owners and the good news is we have managed to locate 1 item’s owner which was stolen from a tradesperson back in December 2014. That tradesperson had a very unexpected phone call from PC 350 to tell him that we had located his stolen item. We were able to do this thanks to him marking the tool box with his business name and contact phone number. Please help us to keep on locating owners of stolen items by: • Record serial numbers for your property such as cordless power tools, petrol gardening tools and any other items that have a serial number on it then if items are stolen please notify Dorset Police and give the call taker the serial numbers to be placed on to the system. Make and model aren’t good enough to prove ownership. • Mark your property by engraving or painting your initials, postcode, business name or phone number into the item and any carrying boxes also consider using DNA marking systems such as Datatag, SmartWater or SelectaDNA these are invisible to the naked eye and we always look for them. By doing these simple things it may increase the likelihood of us finding you as an owner should we recover stolen items with these on. 6

Whilst we were patrolling a number of farms we did note a number of pieces of expensive farm machinery and quad bikes left vulnerable to theft. We will make follow ups to offer advice and help farms to put in effective crime prevention. Should you need advice on how to improve your farms security please email ruralcrimeteam@dorset.pnn.police.uk. Scam Warning - Fake Paypal Emails Action Fraud is warning people selling items online to be on the lookout for criminals sending fake PayPal emails. Between January 2020 and September 2020, 21,349 crime reports were made to Action Fraud about fake PayPal emails. Victims reported losing a total of £7,891,077.44 during this time. Those targeted included people selling jewellery, furniture and electronics via online marketplaces. Reports of fake PayPal emails to Action Fraud made up a third of all reports of online shopping and auction fraud during this period. How does it happen? Criminals have been targeting people selling items online, by sending them emails purporting to be from PayPal. The emails trick victims into believing they have received payment for the items they’re selling on the platform. Typically, after receiving these emails, victims will ship the item to the criminal. This leaves them at a further disadvantage having not received any payment for the item and also no longer being in possession of it. How can you protect yourself? Sellers beware: If you’re selling items on an online marketplace, be aware of the warning signs that your buyer is a scammer. Scammers may have negative feedback history, or may have recently set up a new account to avoid getting poor feedback. Don’t be persuaded into sending anything until you can verify you’ve received the payment. Scam messages: Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails, and never respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial details. How to spot the difference: A PayPal email will address you by your first and last name, or your business name, and will never ask you for your full password, bank account, or credit card details in a message. If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraud online at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

This is in response to the lockdown that began on 5 November and because demand for the volunteers’ support is continuing to rise. It will also help to meet NHS requests for additional direct support during this winter. At the same time, they are encouraging anyone who signed up as an NHS Volunteer Responder in March but had to step down due to other commitments, to re-join the programme and give as much time as they can. As the programme evolves it will focus on direct support to the NHS with tasks such as the delivery of equipment to monitor vulnerable COVID-19 patients in their homes, and with stewarding people at vaccination clinics.
