The Winterborne & Milton Abbas Benefice As I write this article some three weeks before you get to read it, the world news is pretty dire. Angry riots in the US after the killing of an unarmed black man by police; protests marches in Hong Kong of people fearful of further draconian measures being imposed by mainland China; six million confirmed cases of Corvid 19 across the world with over 376,000 deaths and nearly 40,000 of those in the UK; serious uncertainty whether it is a good decision to ease up on the lockdown and risk a further spike; anger over what appears to be one law for those with power and influence and another for the rest of us . I could go on and by the time you get to read this the situation may have improved a little or got a whole lot worse. For me, at this present moment, the image that is foremost in my mind and makes me most angry is that of the President of the United States standing outside a church, in an area recently cleared of protestors by the use of teargas, waving a Bible. Bishop Michael Curry, who preached so passionately about love at Prince Harry and Megan's wedding, condemned this action by saying, "in so doing, he (Mr Trump) used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan political purposes". In this country a previous ministerial adviser once famously told the then Prime Minster who was talking about his own Christian faith "we don't do God." So what are we to make of the connection between Christian faith and politics? Surely our beliefs and Christian understanding must influence aspects of how we think society should be organised and governed. If you look at the Bible every single one of its 66 books has something to say about law and order, about justice, about the way society should ideally be ordered and about how people should be treated, whether those who have power or those who have none. Yes, the Bible was written at particular times with a particular prevalent mindset and has to be taken in context but the underlying principles surely remain the same. As the Old Testament prophet Micah put it, "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." There are Christian politicians on both the Left and the Right who hopefully continue to try and work out how their faith should influence their political understanding and decision making and sometimes they will agree with one another and sometimes disagree, however the Bible must never be used for partisan political purposes in a cynical and manipulative way. Our political leaders certainly need God given wisdom, humility and guidance at this time. As St Paul in the New Testament puts it when writing to Timothy "pray for all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." Amen! Revd. Canon Tina Stirling. Retired priest
Coronavirus Scams - How To Protect Yourself From Dorset Alert System dated 16th June Criminals are exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to try and get their hands on your money and personal information. To date, Action Fraud has received reports from 2,378 victims of Coronavirus-related scams, with the total losses reaching over ÂŁ7 million. How you can protect yourself from Coronavirus-related scams: There are some simple steps you can take that will protect you from the most common Coronavirus-related scams. Here's what need to do: 1 - Watch out for scam messages Your bank, or other official organisations, won't ask you to share personal information over email or text. If you receive an email you're not quite sure about, forward it to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS): report@phishing.gov.uk 2 - Shopping online If you're making a purchase from a company or person you don't know and trust, carry out some research first, for example, by checking to see if others have used the site and what their experience was. If you
decide to go ahead with the purchase, use a credit card if you have one, other payment providers may not provide the same protection. 3 - Unsolicited calls and browser pop-ups offering tech support Never install any software, or grant remote access to your computer, as a result of a cold call. Remember, legitimate organisations would never contact you out of the blue to ask for financial details such as your PIN or full banking password. NHS Test and Trace scams: The NHS Test and Trace service plays an important role in the fight against coronavirus and it's vital the public have confidence and trust in the service. However, we understand the concerns people have about the opportunity for criminals to commit scams. What you need to know: Contact tracers will only call you from the number 0300 013 5000. Anyone who does not wish to talk over the phone can request the NHS Test and Trace service to send an email or text instead, inviting them to log into the web-based service. All text or emails sent by NHS Test and Trace will ask people to sign into the contact tracing website and will provide you with a unique reference number. We would advise people to type the web address https://contact-tracing.phe.gov.uk directly into their browser, followed by the unique reference number given to you, rather than clicking on any link provided in the message. The NHS Test and Trace service will never: ask you to dial a premium rate number to speak to them (for example, those starting 09 or 087) ask you to make any form of payment or purchase a product or any kind ask for any details about your bank account ask for your social media identities or login details, or those of your contacts ask you for any passwords or PINs, or ask you to set up any passwords or PINs over the phone ask you to download any software to your PC or ask you to hand over control of your PC, smartphone or tablet to anyone else ask you to access any website that does not belong to the government or NHS If you think you have been a victim of fraud, please report it to Action Fraud at https://www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. If you live in Scotland, please report directly to Police Scotland by calling 101.
Milton Abbas Surgery Article dated 8th June 2020 Thank you to all of our patients for being understanding during the Covid-19 outbreak. Our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that colleagues and patients stay safe but we also provide the care required. As the situation changes, our offer will also change: at the moment we are continuing to offer childhood immunisations as normal and cervical screening has also restarted. Blood tests are being undertaken and patients are having face to face appointments following telephone triage with a GP/nurse. We are able to offer telephone consultations, eConsultations and video consultations as an alternative to face-to face appointments. It is difficult to say now what the situation will be by the time you read this as things are changing on a weekly or even daily basis. At the moment, if you come into the surgery you will need to have a covering for your nose and mouth: we are not able to provide masks for patients as national stocks are low. Our request is that you make sure you are aware of national and local guidance. If you are unclear of the expectation when you attend the surgery, please check the website, the village Facebook pages or phone before you travel. If you have a cough, temperature, loss of smell or taste or you have been in contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case in the last 14 days, DO NOT come to the surgery, telephone first. Finally, at this time of year we would normally be advertising our annual flu clinic. We will still be offering vaccinations to our eligible population, but we are currently assessing how we can do this safely. More information will be provided nearer the time.
Artsreach Our wonderful Dorset charity, Artsreach, is 30 this year. 'It' is very much two splendid women who work extremely hard, at a job they love. Yvonne, I think, has been there from the start, and Kerry for more years than you would think, as she looks very young. There is also a new recruit, Nicole. Sadly, these Covid times have meant that their life is very different, just as it has for everyone else. Yvonne and Kerry take it in turns to be furloughed for a month at a time, and Nicole is working extremely part-time. Nevertheless, they are still doing a lot to help community spirit thrive in Dorset. Do visit their website www.artsreach.co.uk, which they are continually updating with lovely things to do and see, including the National Theatre's and Shakespeare's Globe Live streaming. They are in very close touch (virtually) with a large number of artists, both solo and companies, of various kinds, as well as with bodies like the Arts Council, the National Rural Touring Forum, Action With Communities in Rural England and Dorset Community Action. They are doing a lot of hard thinking about possibilities for when this situation gradually eases. Thanks to them, many village halls have been alerted to the Retail and Hospitality Grant of ÂŁ10,000 available from Dorset County Council. Now, they are asking for contributions to a project called 'Tales from the village', a series of articles about our rural Dorset villages: their past, their present, and their future. They are looking for photos (old and new) of your village, its people, buildings and history. They want to hear fun facts, tall tales, folklore, points of historical interest, and true stories of your village and community. If you'd like to be involved with this project, please send relevant photos of your village/village hall with any accompanying stories or text to nicole@artsreach.co.uk along with your name, the name of your village and any other details you'd like mentioned in the article by 8th July 2020. Alternatively, send an email to the address above expressing your interest and Nicole will be in touch to hear your stories. Sarah Ryan, Artsreach volunteer promoter in Milborne St Andrew
Pictures by R.Marchant Taking advantage of the colour production of the online version of Valley News, here are a few of the wild flowers blooming at the end of June: thistle, wild geranium, brooklime.
Streamwatch It is rare to count less than ten bird species when walking along Water Lane and to see something different always brings intrigue and excitement. On a recent stroll a tail-less grey wagtail sat in front of us - it was a juvenile. Grey wagtails are generally in decline across Britain. They have an amber classification which means they are a species of concern. Numbers fell in 1970-1980s but are slowly recovering. Grey wagtails are thriving in the Winterborne valley and they are clearly happy in this habitat. The grey wagtails have the longest tails of the wagtail family this enables them to have greater manoeuvrability and agility when chasing insects, their main diet. The young have very short tails (hence the hesitation in identification) with less distinctive and paler markings. It is just possible that there are two nests in the valley as the initial sightings of the juveniles were seen at each end of the lane. The grey wagtail with a blue-grey upper body, black wings and yellow underbody, is a UK resident - not to be mistaken for the yellow wagtail which has an olive-green upper body, a vivid yellow underbody, brown wings, and is a summer migrant to eastern England. The grey wagtail is found nearer fast running water; the yellow wagtail near fresh water and around meadows and pasture. Nests are made in hollows or crevices near shallow fast flowing freshwater streams. Ideally with a concealed entrance approached from below. An ideal nesting box will have a profile something like this:
The hay-fever season has been long and prolonged this year with little rainfall to quell the amount of pollen flying around. So as you appreciate any focus upon grasses is accompanied by a large box of tissues! Have you ever stopped to look closely at the variety and beauty of grasses on the roadside, the shapes and colours? Here are a few captured on camera in mid-June.
Pictures by R.Marchant For the record, the Delcombe Wood borehole figures indicate that ground water levels continue to fall. In one month the water has fallen 1.3m to 126.68m. Hopefully with recent rainfall and more rain forecast, the best we can hope is that levels stabilise for the remainder of the summer. Other news includes: The successful repair of the damaged bank and no more surface water on the road outside Pamela Hambro Hall. This should hopefully do the trick but at the same time still allowing water for flow onto the road in times of flood. Three ducklings have survived from the latest clutch of eggs and have become very adept at hiding. If you do see them, please remember to admire from a distance and to keep dogs well away.
