got round to booking one yet? Every patient needs to be assessed regularly to ensure they get access to the healthcare they need. If you have a long-term chronic condition, we might ask to see you at least annually, to check how things are going and to see whether we can improve the management of your condition. We can chat about any developments and improvements in treatment, and any concerns you may have. If we’ve invited you for an annual review, please make an appointment if you haven’t already; we’d love to talk to you about how things are going. Smoking, tobacco and vaping If you’re a teen smoker, or anyone who smokes, you might want to think about giving up. Your long-term health can be seriously affected by smoking. It’s not just your health, though; smoking can seriously damage your wallet. If you’re 16 and smoke ten cigarettes a day until you retire, you’ll have spent almost £130,000 on cigarettes in today’s money. This tool will give you an idea of how much you spend on smoking: think about what you could spend it on instead! https://www.nhsinform.scot/stopping-smoking/calculate-my-savings Live Well Dorset offer a great support package to help if you’d like to give up smoking. Live Well Dorset also provide help if you’d like to reduce your alcohol intake, lose weight or exercise more. You can contact them on 01300 233105 or 0800 840 1628, or visit their website: https://www.livewelldorset.co.uk/ Finally, a small plea from our team: if we have phoned you and left a message for you to call the surgery, please can you do so? The demand on the reception team has increased dramatically recently, particularly regarding covid vaccinations. We have to make a lot of phone calls in a day, and it takes up so much of our time having to chase people who don’t return our calls. Thank you for your help and understanding.

Editorial We are continuing with our plan to restart a printed edition of the magazine from July. Deadlines will be as normal – Adverts by June 10th and articles and content from June 15th. We are conscious that the first edition might be somewhat short of articles but we hope that this will change very quickly. We are always looking for interesting articles, photos and reports of events as well as the information advertising them! Many people appreciate reading about events that they were unable to attend, especially if they are accompanied by photographs. We hope that the first such report might be of the Spring event in Turnworth… We are aware that some events have already been planned and advertised locally and we look forward to being able to help with this service when we reprint, as we are delivered to every home in our community thanks to our dedicated band of deliverers. We are always looking for new volunteers to join us in this aspect of our work; do get in touch with Sue Eggar or Angela D’Silva if you would like to help us. We especially would like to have some volunteers who could help out as ‘emergency cover’ for when regulars might be away on holiday, for example. It seems to us that this is a good opportunity to update our list of organisations in the valley. If you organise a club or class and would like us to include your details in our list, please contact us at news@valleynews.co.uk so that we can do this. Equally, please let us know if any of the contact details are incorrect, or need to be removed as the activity no longer takes place. Thank you for your help – the more accurate this list is, the better the help for our readers. We are pleased to report that our magazine will continue to be printed by Purely Print of Blandford. We appreciate the support that is shown to us, helping us to print our magazine ready to deliver it to your home. We are proud to work in partnership with this company, which is now under new management. We would like to extend the new proprietor, Steve McFarlane, every success in his new venture. As we move – hopefully – towards a more normal way of life, we look forward to becoming a regular part of Valley activities once again. Look out for a surprising new look when we land in your letterboxes next month – we hope you’ll like it. The Valley News Team

The Blandford Group Practice As we are still in the Covid pandemic, the NHS recommends that we triage or phone back every patient who wants advice from a nurse, doctor or other healthcare professional. If you need medical advice or treatment, please call us on 01258 452501 or visit our website www.theblandfordgrouppractice.co.uk. We ask many of the patients we have telephoned, to then come to the surgery for a face-to-face appointment, but due to infection control measures and social distancing, we can only let patients into the surgery if they have a planned appointment. We are keen, as we are sure you are too, to avoid transmission of infection and so to ensure social distancing we are closely monitoring how many patients are in our building including sitting in the waiting room. We need to take more precautions than shops etc due to the vulnerability of some of our patients. We know that some of these measures are frustrating for you as they are for us. We are facing unprecedented demands with a huge increase in the number of calls we are receiving and the need for us all to catch up with the monitoring of patients which was not possible in the height of the pandemic. We all look forward to lockdown measures continuing to ease but in the meantime, many thanks for your patience and understanding. Thank you. During April 2021 the Practice had 217 appointments where patients failed to attend, this equates to over 36 hours of clinical time If you need to cancel your appointment, you can call the surgery on 01258 452501 and select option 2 to leave details on our answerphone. By cancelling your appointment you are ensuring other patients who need medical attention can be seen. Please note this answerphone is for cancellations only and other messages will not be responded to. Also during April 2021 the Practice received 40,851 incoming calls. Please be reassured we are aware the phone lines are extremely busy and we request that when calling the surgery you remain patient as we endeavour to answer your call as quickly as possible. We have a zero tolerance policy of aggression and abuse towards our staff, all our team are working incredibly hard to provide the best possible care for every patient. We are currently in the process of taking steps to improve the telephone access by recruiting new receptionists and will be opening up additional phone lines so please bear with us.

issuu.com/valleynewsdt11 Milton Abbas Surgery Carers Week 7th – 13th June 2021 Carers Week is an annual awareness campaign that celebrates and recognises the vital contribution of the UK’s unpaid carers – supporting family members and friends who are older, have a disability, mental or physical illness or need extra help as they grow older. Carers have been under extraordinary pressure during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many caring around the clock without access to support. In view of this, we would like to let carers know the following: Kelly is our Social Prescribing & Carers Lead at the surgery, and she is here to provide unpaid carers with information on the support available to them. If you would like to speak with her, please call the surgery on 01258 880210. We have updated our Carers Packs at the surgery which now include the booklet called ‘If Only I’d Know That’ produced by The Leonardo Trust, as well as details of support services and other helpful information. Please ask at Reception if you would like a pack. We also now have a dedicated page on our surgery website (www.masurgery.co.uk) for carers with links to resources, support, and events. Carers may also find it useful to follow our surgery Facebook page @miltonabbassurgery for the latest surgery news and useful information. Thank you to all unpaid carers out there. You are doing a fantastic job and you are not alone – we are here for you should you need us. The importance of attending review appointments Have you been invited for a review appointment for your Long Term Condition (for example diabetes, asthma or COPD), but haven’t quite 2

Did you know that livestock worrying is a criminal offence? If you’re out walking the dog this weekend on agricultural land and it worries livestock you are committing the offence of livestock worrying. We’re asking dog owners to be responsible when out enjoying our countryside and stick to the countryside code. - Keep all dogs on a lead around any livestock and remember to always release the lead if chased by cattle and get yourself to safety. - Worrying is traditionally thought of as a dog biting/attacking livestock but it also means: - Chasing livestock in such a way as may be reasonably expected to cause injury or suffering; in the case of ewes, this includes abortion or loss or reduction in the number of offspring she has. - Not having a dog on a lead or under close control when close by, or in a field or enclosure with livestock. - Please clear up after your dog, even in fields as if the mess is ingested by certain livestock it can cause them to abort there young. - The penalty for livestock worrying can be 6 months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £1000. - Under the Protection of Livestock Act 1953 “Livestock” means cattle, sheep, goats, swine, horses, donkey’s or poultry. - In extreme cases, farmers have a legal right to shoot a dog that is worrying livestock to protect their property, or the dog could be subject to a court order to be ‘destroyed’. - Please do NOT feed livestock while out on your walk. Some livestock are on special diets and also feeding them everyday household foods may well result in the death of livestock. If you see anything suspicious call 101 or if you see a dog worrying livestock or attacking livestock please call Dorset Police on 999. If you wish to have a livestock worrying poster to place around your farm to make people aware then please visit the Rural Crime Team website and download a copy here: https://www.dorset.police.uk/ruralcrime If you would like some signs for your farm or small holding where you have footpaths crossing farm land please send a email to Ruralcrimeteam@dorset.pnn.police.uk with the subject line “worrying signs” Please include in the email your address and quantity of signs you require.

Pamela Hambro Hall We are pleased to report that, following recent Government relaxation of restrictions, the hall is able to open again – albeit subject to certain continuing limits on both activities and numbers attending. We are very hopeful that a return to completely normal use will be possible after June 21st – subject of course to the ending of lockdown. If you would like to hire the hall, please contact Hazel Lappin, out bookings Secretary, on 880969. We are going to hold our ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on July 12th 2021 at 7pm in the hall. Do come along and support the committee with their work looking after this popular village resource. We are going to be looking for some new volunteers to join us, as we are losing another member and the team is getting rather small in number! We are going to miss Jilly Spencer enormously, both as a committee member for 20 years and a regular user of the hall, as well as having been the cleaner for many years. She and her husband Jim move down to Devon (part-time to begin with) and she has ended her use of the hall for her classes and activities. She has been a dedicated and supportive member of the team, a most reliable and committed cleaner, and an inspiration to so many with her classes and advice. She is going to be much missed. We all join in sending her and Jim our best wishes for her life in Devon. If you think you might be interested in joining the committee, do give me a ring and have a chat about it. With the hall reopening we need to remind everyone that the car park is a private car park for use of the hall users only. There has been an increase in the number of people parking in the hall car park in recent months as the hall has been closed, but now we are reopening we need to ensure that the space is available for our users. Please do not use the car park at all unless you are attending an event in the hall. Should you have a one-off reason for needing to use a space then this will need to be booked with Hazel Lappin, details as above. Graham Case, secretary. 880740

What I Plan To Do As Police and Crime Commissioner I am humbled and grateful to the people of Dorset for electing me as their Police and Crime Commissioner. I’ve lived in this county all my life, my children were brought up here and my family goes back generations. It is therefore a great honour to represent all of you – and that of course includes those who voted for me in the recent PCC elections, as well as those who voted for one of the other candidates and those who didn’t cast a vote at all. It’s also an honour for me to work with Dorset Police, which I know is a great organisation full of dedicated, hard working people. Safest county in the UK Many of you will already have heard about my vision, which is to make Dorset the safest county in the UK. I know this is a place we can get to. Over the next few weeks I will be working on a new Police and Crime Plan for Dorset, which will be the roadmap setting out how we can get there. The plan will be at the heart of all activity carried out by Dorset Police, as well as my own office, over the next three years. It will have a major impact on how we make our communities safer, so later in the summer I will be asking the people of Dorset about what matters to you and what you think should be included in the plan. Please, watch this space for more information about how you can make a contribution and have your voice heard. But first, let me tell you more about some of my own priorities – and what I want to focus on to make Dorset safer. Focus on cutting crime Number one on my list is for the police to robustly focus on cutting crime, from the violent crime – which is thankfully rarer here than in our big cities – to the constant grind of anti social behaviour which blights communities and makes people’s lives miserable. I want people to see a clear difference and to feel safer. I also want to bring back community focused policing to the streets of Dorset. We should increase the number of officers across our

Livestock Worrying As we all look forward to bank holiday weekend with some great weather in the forecast, please be aware of livestock worrying and the effect your dog could pose to livestock. During 2020 - Dorset Police had 36 reported incidents of livestock worrying and attacks by dogs. This is 36 times a dog owner has failed to have their dog under their close control near livestock and did not consider what their dog may do. ‘My dog has never done anything like that before' is repeatedly seen on police incident logs. Some of these reports have involved dog's which have escaped their owners gardens. Please check the perimeter of your garden fences and check that these are secure. If fences aren’t up to scratch, please rectify any areas of concerns immediately and until this has been done don’t let the dog outside unsupervised. NFU Mutual statistics reveal the cost of dog attacks on farm animals increased by over 10% in 2020 to an estimated £1.3m last year. 4

neighbourhood teams and make them far more visible, so they play a role in preventing crimes against individuals and businesses. Members of our communities should know who their local officers are and should be able to contact them easily when needed. We need to fight organised crime, particularly the county lines drugs gangs who have brought violence into some of our towns, but we also need to tackle hidden problems such as domestic abuse, child abuse, hate crime, modern slavery and cyber crime. Dorset is a proudly rural county, and so we need to deal with those crimes which have a terrible impact on our farmers and people who live in small isolated villages, but which often take place away from the media spotlight. I want to significantly increase the rural crime team and their capabilities, and I want to develop specific strategies to tackle problems affecting our rural communities such as burglary, anti social behaviour and farm theft. Putting victims first But above all, we’ll put victims and communities at the heart of

everything we do, because it is for these people that we need to bring about change. We need to support all our victims, particularly older and more vulnerable people, but we also need to help build up strong and resourceful communities. There’s also a huge resource of talented and passionate volunteers across our county – from Neighbourhood Watch and Community Speedwatch teams to our inspirational Police Cadets – and we need to do more to tap into that. Finally, we need to make sure every penny counts when it comes to police funding. This is your money, which you pay through your council tax year in year out. We need to make sure we properly resource the front line and reduce unnecessary expenses so police teams can spend more time engaging with our communities, gathering intelligence and making people feel safer. And if we get all that right, we’ll make our police crime fighters again, and Dorset will be well on the way to becoming the safest county in the UK. David Sidwick
