Update on the Covid Vaccination Clinics The Covid vaccination clinics are continuing at The Atrium Health Centre in Dorchester. We would like to take this opportunity to remind patients of the following: We understand that a lot of you are anxious to have your vaccination, but please could we ask patients to wait for us to contact you either by text or telephone rather than contacting the surgery, unless there is an important reason for doing so. We are unable to invite everyone at once as we are given a limited amount of vaccines. This means that your neighbour/friend/spouse may get called before you, so please do not think that we have forgotten you if you haven’t heard from us yet. Whilst waiting for us to contact you, you may receive a letter from the NHS inviting you to have the vaccination at one of the larger vaccination centres. This invitation is simply an additional option for people who are eligible, and it is your choice whether you are happy to travel or would prefer to wait for an appointment in Dorchester. We will be updating patients on our website and Facebook page as to which cohort we are currently inviting for vaccinations. If we have finished a specific age group and you have not been contacted, then please phone the surgery. When you are at the vaccination clinic, please arrive on time for your appointment rather than early otherwise this causes queues to form outside the clinic. Please can we also ask that you respect social distancing guidelines at all times and wear a face covering. We would also like to say a big thank you to all the staff and volunteers involved in the clinic. Staff from all the 9 surgeries are working extra hours including weekends and evenings on top of their day jobs to provide this service to the community. We are only notified of vaccine deliveries the week before the clinics, so everything happens at short notice and we rely so much on the good will of all involved. Thank you as always to our patients for their understanding and patience. Keep following the guidelines and stay safe. Be Clear on Cancer It is important to be aware of any unexplained changes to your body, such as blood in your pee or poo, a lump, persistent bloating or pain that does not go away. It's probably nothing serious but diagnosing and finding cancer early makes it more treatable and can save lives. So, if you have noticed any of the above, please phone us to book a telephone consultation with a GP or complete an eConsult online. We are open, we are here for you and we are able to see you safely. Surgery Email Address If you have a medical concern or question, please can you phone the surgery on 01258 880210 to book a telephone consultation with a GP or complete an eConsult online rather than use the surgery email address. By doing so, we can make sure that you access the medical help you need as speedily as possible. Our surgery email address is really only for admin queries or for sending photos through for a booked appointment when requested to do so by a member of the team. We thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. Surgery Facebook Page Please can we encourage patients to follow our Facebook page @miltonabbassurgery for the latest surgery news and updates on the Covid vaccination clinics.

Editorial At last! After such a long period of worrying news, we can begin to feel more optimistic about the next few months as the vaccination programme continues apace and the news of the effectiveness of the vaccines confirms earlier expectations. And locally more and more people are starting to become more reassured as their appointments for the vaccination come through. And the newly announced target that all adults in the UK should have received both doses by the Autumn is another really positive step towards a return to normality. Hopefully this will not be a false dawn, and the majority of people will still follow the appropriate guidelines as we move forward, so that this awful virus can be effectively managed going forward. It is the case (to borrow one politician’s favourite phrase) that the vast majority of UK citizens are coming forward to receive their jabs, but also that there is a worrying number of people who have been taken in by the claims from ‘anti-vaxxers’ which have circulated widely on the internet. You may have seen that the USA is enduring some severe weather (while this editorial is written) where temperatures have been below freezing for over a fortnight, and this coupled with heavy snow. But did you spot that there had been lots of power cuts in Texas, adding to the difficulty of coping with the weather? And that there has been a report circulating that one of the reasons that there have been power cuts has been because the wind generated power has been lost because the turbines froze in the cold weather? This is untrue – yet the report gained a lot of credence as it was re-tweeted and re-posted. There was a picture of a frozen turbine shown, with a helicopter hovering nearby de-icing it, used as ‘evidence’. Several politicians repeated the story as if it were true. Eventually the truth emerged; it was a combination of gas generation plants being frozen and unusable; the massive demands for electricity as the storm continued contributed to the problems, as well as Texas being an independent producer of power and unable to access electricity from elsewhere on the grid. And the photograph of the helicopter? This came from a 2016 event in Sweden! The purpose of linking these two issues is to once again draw attention to the internet. It is an immense, positive resource for the world and has been shown to be almost limitless in its potential. However, there is a downside to all this interconnectivity, in that it also allows anyone to use it! We have regularly carried articles about potential threats (from scam and phishing emails and calls, and so on) but we all need to remember that there is an almost unending supply of media sites that allow stories of both dubious and false claims to be aired. And many are done with great sophistication, and appear at first glance to be true and authentic. We need to bear in mind that a number of these might not be as authentic as they appear. The watchword needs to be to ‘take care’ and to ‘make haste slowly’ when reading these items. We hope that the campaign beginning on Feb 18th encouraging doubters to accept their vaccine offers is successful, and uptake increases; it’s in all our interests as we move towards a return to normal. Here’s to a wonderful Spring! The Valley News Team

Milton Abbas Surgery We now have First Contact Physiotherapy appointments available at the surgery where patients can have a consultation with them rather than go through the GP. The role of First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) in Primary Care is to assess patients with soft tissue, muscle and joint pain and to decide on the most appropriate management pathway. They have expertise in the assessment and management of Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, such as: All soft tissue injuries, sprains, strains or sports injuries Arthritis – any joint

THINK & PRAY ABOUT IT And if you are not inclined to pray then St. Benedict advised that there is a connection between praying & working when he said, "To work is to pray." Working and praying are partners. Jimmy Hamilton-Brown

The Winterborne & Milton Abbas Benefice BACK TO NORMAL? I suppose we are all asking the question when can we get back to normal after Covid. The answer is easy - NEVER! We cannot go back to where we used to be. So much has changed and we have discovered a number of things that that will actually make life better - and some that will make it more complicated. WE ARE CHANGING Lewis, our rector, has had to cope with the churches learning working & worshipping in new ways - and he has done that remarkably well, particularly over Christmas. ZOOM has had to replace most traditional worship, with churches often not open, and even then we are limited to numbers, keeping our distance, wearing masks, and taking care not to chat together afterwards. Holy Communion is a real problem. We are told it cannot be done at a distance, and in any case it is based on a shared communal meal which cannot take place over the internet. Meetings no longer require people to travel to a central point as MPs have discovered, although too much ZOOM can be a struggle. Lewis tells me he had 6 in one day lasting up to an hour each. I get fed up with just 2 on most Sundays! PROBLEMS Home teaching replacing school is a difficult experience, with the limitations of the connection & the shortage of expensive equipment. It has all been challenging for parents, & boring for children who miss their friends. Going out to the pub even for a meal has often been restricted. But there are obvious advantages to be thankful for, & how fortunate we are in the countryside to have open spaces, dogs, and suitable roads to walk. Many do not now have to travel to work, but can carry on at home. Many miss the freedom to meet & chat together and others do not work well alone. My daughter has 2 children at uni. One returned as soon as she could to "sunny & soggy" Bournemouth. The other has decided to stay put at home rather than go back to Coventry. Grandchildren (like the university towns) are quite different! RURAL ADVANTAGES Living in a rural benefice gives us a better opportunity to care for each other, especially the elderly and the lonely. This is where the churches can make a considerable difference by keeping an eye on people, including those with no church allegiance. This was demonstrated recently by two visits to nearby Piddlehinton by BBC "Today". Consultations with distant doctors etc can now take place over the phone. In our Lent course on ZOOM we are discovering ways in which we can be better neighbours. So do not expect to go back to where we were before. We have discovered new ways of living to our advantage. It will require thought & imagination to discover what best works for us. We are creative beings - that is how the Lord has made us! But I do wonder where mosquitos & viruses fit in! DO NOT IGNORE POORER COUNTRIES Thankfully we now have numerous vaccines. But I cannot understand why the UK & EU, with other wealthy countries, are not supporting the World Trade Organisation proposal that encourages countries not to hinder the production & supply COVID 19 medications to poorer countries until the pandemic is over. This pandemic will continue so long as we can import the various versions of the virus from all over the world'. (Ed: Update – this process has now been supported by the UK through the ‘COVAX’ arrangements, and it has been agreed that we will share spare vaccines with poorer countries.)

Artsreach Throughout this pandemic time, one group of people who has been hard hit is actors, comedians, singers, musicians and dancers. Our own Dorset charity, Artsreach, has been working very hard to try and find ways of bringing them to audiences in Covid-secure ways. In the short Summer interval when restrictions were relaxed a bit, there were a few events outside, or even in village halls with socially distanced audiences, and, more and more, they are supporting events online. Interestingly, they are in the vanguard, identifying the need for more help for young people, and are hoping to get dedicated volunteers in the community to work with them in bringing events specifically for children and teenagers. To find out what they have on offer, go to their digital diary which is regularly updated. You can also sign up to receive regular emails from them. https://artsreach.co.uk/news/digital-diary

Pamela Hambro Hall 100 Club This is a reminder to all our supporters that the club will start its new season next month. If you are already a member, you should be contacted soon to ask for payment of £12 for the next 12 months. If you are not yet a member and would like to support the hall by joining, please get in touch with Hazel Lappin (880969). The club offers three monthly prizes of £25, £15 and £10 each month if we have 100 members, so it’s not just a donation - there are three chances each month of a prize! Thank you for your support which is much appreciated. Hazel Lappin

Greetings from Corfe Mullen! I hope you are all keeping well and safe during these difficult times. As I write this (12th Feb) it is bitterly cold - but no snow as yet! But the promise of Spring is showing all around our little garden - snowdrops, crocus, and even one or two daffodils! I was pleasantly surprised when we had our first spring here - spring flowers everywhere! I can't believe we have been here over 3 years now! Having finally got used to all the technology we have now, I am enjoying joining the ZOOM services in the valley recently, and it's been so good to catch up with old friends in the church and to have site of the beautiful churches in the valley. Anyone who hasn't tried going on ZOOM for the Sunday service - do try it! Lewis, the new Rector and his team are doing a super job. Corfe Mullen is under threat of yet more large developments possibly 400 more houses in and around the only green spaces we have left here - Corfe Mullen has already seen far too much development over the years, and we are all fighting now to save the green belt we have left. Finally, the only "drama" Des and I have had is when one of our little Pomeranian dogs got out onto Wareham Road through a hole made by a fox one night. A very kind man found him in the middle of the road during rush hour one morning - picked him up and took him to our local vet who knew who he belonged to! Needless to say we were so relieved to have him safely back, and Des spent a very wet morning fencing off the hole in the fence! Take care everyone and God Bless. Heather Sims

of its missing dog reports actually relate to working dogs. The most commonly stolen gundogs are Cocker, Springer Spaniels and Labradors. The good news is that in Dorset we haven’t seen a rise in working dog thefts in the last few years. However, that isn’t to say that this will not increase. Like many of our previous communications the UK crime trade of stolen dogs continues to thrive because people are buying online from non-reputable sources or even commonly used websites advertising pets for sale. It’s worth just taking a few moments to think about the security of your working dogs and the simple crime prevention measures that you can take. It is important to think like a criminal. Look at your property as if you are trying to steal your dogs. How would you do it and how could you be stopped? If you find a flaw make sure it’s rectified ASAP. We understand that crime prevention in rural areas is very difficult by the nature of the environment but officers are trained and experienced in crime prevention advice. If you would like a bespoke crime prevention visit to your rural home or business please send an email to the team at ruralcrimeteam@dorset.pnn.police.uk and more crime prevention advice can be found here: https://www.dorset.police.uk/ruralcrime For more information on security please visit our website here: https://www.dorset.police.uk/ruralcrime The National Police Chiefs’ Council have also released further information on dog theft which can be found here: https://news.npcc.police.uk/releases/police-encourage-dog-owners-totake-extra-precautions

Dorset Neighbour Alerts Trailer Theft Alert This is a reminder to owners of trailers across the county to make sure that your trailers are secured and marked as soon as possible following a rise in trailer thefts recently in West and North Dorset. We have included below the best ways to secure your trailers. • Record trailer serial numbers and photographs for reference – a picture of the stolen trailer or box will increase publicity prospects and recovery. • Trailers should be security marked and secured using a wheel clamp, hitch lock and consider using a security post to secure. Consider an appropriate ground anchor with strong high CEN rated padlock and chain. • Putting your postcode on the roof of your livestock or horse box is a good way of making sure that it is easily identifiable. Kits can be brought off of the Internet cheaply. • Have your trailer marked with a security marking scheme such as Datatag (other options are available.) Please do your research to find the system that’s right for you. Insurance discounts are available for fitting certain devices to machines. Check with your insurer for more details. Machines fitted and registered with certain security markings are 4 times less likely to be stolen and are 6 times more likely to be recovered if they are stolen. • If your trailer or box is fitted with Datatag make sure that it is registered to you, especially if you have bought this second-hand. To update details please visit https://www.datatag.co.uk/owner.php • Make sure that if you have a trailer or box which is fitted with a different security registration sticker that your details are current and up to date with them. • Consider removing wheels on trailers if they’re not going to be used for a while, locking the wheels away in a different place and consider using security posts to secure your trailer into an area. • Trailers can also be secured by reversing up to a solid object such as a wall and then placing a bucket or other heavy implement over the hitch to prevent removal. • Fit an alarm, a simple battery-operated alarm will help deter the thief. • If you would like a farm watch or horse watch sign please contact the Rural Crime Team by email to ruralcrimeteam@dorset.pnn.police.uk Please include in your email the subject line “Farm watch signs” and in the email your name, address and how many signs you would like. These will be posted to you. ** We are only able to send a maximum of 2 signs per address and the address must be registered with Farm or Horse watch ** • Report suspicious vehicle or callers to Police by calling 999 if the vehicle or occupants are seen committing the crime or phone 101 or via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk if the vehicle is seen acting suspiciously. • To find out more information or to arrange a bespoke crime prevention visit to your farm or rural premises please email the team directly at ruralcrimeteam@dorset.pnn.police.uk Telephone Scams The scams continue. Please be on your guard and make sure vulnerable elderly relatives or neighbours are aware. There are a number of scams doing the rounds at present; a call stating your National Insurance number has been compromised and HMRC is threatening you with arrest - both of these are automated calls. There is also one stating to be from the police asking you to pass bank details as there has been a fraud on your bank account - the police would never ask you for your bank details. There are scams from callers claiming to be from Amazon as well as one to do with COVID. Remember scams change all the time and can be topical. These callers can sound very convincing and are after your hard-earned money! Help to protect vulnerable or elderly relatives by making sure they have call guardian or call blocker on their phone - these systems can also be purchased relatively cheaply. If you receive a call the advice is to HANG UP ON FRAUDSTERS! Dog Theft Prevention Dog theft, especially of working dogs, has been a huge problem in other areas of the country. DogLost.co.uk has stated that almost 50%
