Editorial Last month, in his last, excellent article for our magazine, Alan Ryan bade us all farewell with a very thoughtful piece about our lives, how on people's gravestones there are usually two dates (birth and death) and a dash in between. He wrote that it is the dash that is the significant part, and that we should live our 'dash' "doing justice, loving mercy and walking humbly with God." Without being in any way critical of Alan's writing, there perhaps should also be a comment about the 'dash' itself as it conjures up the idea of rush, of speed, of haste. Whilst that may be an accurate way of describing modern life, we have previously written about the need to take stock, to take a step back and reflect perhaps more often than life encourages or allows us to do. The poet WH Davies captured this mood in his poem written in 1911 - the last two lines of which are: A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. We should all take the time to reflect and appreciate what we are. We hear so often of people who are taken ill, often very suddenly, who reflect that they would have liked to have done something more or differently beforehand. Let's not make the same mistake ourselves; let's appreciate everything while we can, and Autumn is a great time to enjoy life! As the summer season draws to a close, we should like to express our thanks to everyone who has helped with the organisation of our various village activities - fetes, Fun in the Field, harvest lunches and so on as well as all the regular activities that are available for us to enjoy. They wouldn't have happened without lots of effort and it is much appreciated. Our thanks also to those who have sent in reports from events held - these too are appreciated by our readers. NOVEMBER DEADLINES
Rose and family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all friends and neighbours in the valley and beyond for all the cards, letters, donations, words of comfort and sympathy shown to them during this very sad time. Also, grateful thanks to four unknown sources who made very kind donations to help with costs. We are overcome by your generosity and warmed by your kindness. The fact that Alan willingly gave of his limited time to give Hans such a wonderful service, as he so rightly said, we were the first family he met when he came to the valley so it was only fitting we were the last! It was a true sign that love in the valley still enfolds us all and leaves a wonderful feeling of caring for one another. Rose Hennicker
ADS THURSDAY 10th OCT ARTICLES TUESDAY 15th OCT Winterborne Stickland Parish Council The August meeting was held on the 28th with 8 members of the public present. Cllr Andrew Kerby has offered to bring the Communities Land Trust Officer to the next meeting to give further information to the PC . The Speed Indicator Device will be in Milton Abbas throughout September. The PC is still awaiting quotes for the repair of the back section of the war memorial wall. The urgent repairs needed to Water Lane have now been referred to DC Engineering Dept as it is recognised that major work is required. The broken footbridge by Mulberry House has been reported to Dorset Countryside for repair. The culverts at the bottom of Chalky Path are blocked and this has been reported to DC Highways. The PC voted to not object to the retrospective planning application for a timber shed at the Hollow on Chalky Path. Cllr Harlock will contact the volunteers who have agreed to assist with maintenance of the PC burial ground. Simon Jones attended the meeting with the results of the survey to assess the need for a replacement play park. It was agreed to discuss further at the next meeting. Cllr Harlock has agreed to remove the basket swing from the play park as it has been vandalised and he will also repair the two broken steps on the multi play. The Clerk had received an email regarding speeding through the village and parking on pavements. The PC has limited powers in this respect but will ask all residents to park with consideration particularly on North St. The next meetings will be 30th Sept and 28th Oct at 7:30 pm
Dunbury Academy News
We are back for the new school year rested and ready for another exciting year at Dunbury. A warm welcome to everyone, especially to our new Reception children. They are a lovely bunch and it's great to see them settled into their learning and playing - they are a delight. It's also an exciting start for our Year 3 children who have moved to our Winterborne Whitechurch base. How grown up they suddenly are… and the children seem to be taking life in Key Stage Two beautifully in 2

Applications for funding should be emailed to sticklandsolarfund@yahoo.com Decisions are made every 2 months. The basic criteria are that ideas should have benefit to the community. A committee of volunteers select successful projects. 3
The organising committee will be pleased to hear your comments in order to make future events even more successful and enjoyable. This can be done through the Winterborne Stickland Village News Facebook page where pictures of the Fete have already been posted.

Milton Abbas Local History Group It is surprising to us that people really do come from the far flung corners of the globe to visit MIlton Abbas, and even more surprising that they are interested in the history of our village. At the History Group's exhibition at the Street Fair, there were people from New Zealand and Australia. This month we met with visitors from Canberra, Australia who came to stay in Milton Abbas for a few days. They have Arnold ancestors and can trace them back to the 16th century. The Arnolds once owned Bagber Farm and knew the Tregonwells. They were a wealthy and powerful family who married into the Horsey's of Melcombe Bingham, and another branch went to the island of Guernsey. As with all families they had their triumphs and their tragedies over the centuries. We have been ordering documents from the House of Lords archives around 1780 which tell the story of the attempts to move the free grammar school from Milton Abbas. This is a fascinating story of the law and aristocracy of the Georgian period and the power they could wield. Justice of this time appears to us today with our modern sensibilities 'rough', and very unjust for ordinary people. There was a grammar school in Milton Abbas from 1521 in which the local children from neighbouring parishes were educated for free. Lord Milton put an end to this eventually in 1785 after a long and expensive legal battle with the Trustees. Of course much later there was a primary school in the village which in recent times was similarly closed down and moved by the Council - plus ca change! We are very much looking forward to our new season of meetings which start on October the 2nd. We have a full programme of talks through to June 2020, which you can view on our website. Please come and join us, membership is just £10.
Milton Abbas Surgery If you are a smoker and are thinking about quitting, Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking campaign from Public Health England, will be back in October 2019. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for 28-days, you are five times more likely to stay smokefree for good. There are lots of ways to quit and Stoptober can help people choose what works for them. Stoptober offers a range of free support to help people on their quitting journey including an app, daily emails, Facebook Messenger and lots of encouragement from the Stoptober online community on Facebook. In addition, people can get expert face-to-face advice from local stop smoking services. Those who use stop smoking aids and who get face-to-face support from their local stop smoking service are up to four times more likely to quit successfully. Visit the Stoptober site at www.nhs.uk/oneyou/be-healthier/quitsmoking/stoptober or visit www.livewelldorset.co.uk/stop-smoking for local help and advice. A reminder that our annual flu clinic will be held this year on Saturday 12th October at Winterborne Whitechurch Village Hall. If you are eligible for a flu vaccination, please make every effort to attend this clinic as this is the most efficient way for us to ensure we have time to vaccinate everyone. Thank you. Finally, we still have a number of appointments each week with all of our clinicians that are missed by patients. We appreciate that everyone is human and may occasionally forget, but please make every effort to attend your appointment on time or let us know in good time if you are unable to attend so we can allocate the slot to another patient. Thank you.
Poetry Corner Henry the Hedgehog Henry the Hedgehog was out in his garden, picking the slugs off the flowers. The Dormouse next door said, "You've done that before. When you've finished, could you come and do ours? " Sandra the Skunk Sandra the Skunk was playing Kerplunk, and Sammy the Snail played as well. But things went all wrong, when she let out a pong. So Sammy went back in his shell. Simon the Slug Simon the Slug was trapped under a rug. He'd been there from dawn until dusk. Try hard as he might, he was stuck there real tight. And now he's no more than a husk! Jackie Grearson
Stickland Summer Fete A big thank you to everyone who helped to make Stickland Summer Fete on Saturday 31st August a huge success. An amazing sum of just over £2100 was raised for St Mary's Church but more than this, it was a wonderful community event and greatly enjoyed. Thank you for coming. Thanks go to so many who made this event possible, particularly the Oakley family who provided much of the equipment. We are grateful to Kevin Oakley for once again being our compere during the afternoon with professional aplomb. Thanks too for all the helpers: stall holders, individuals and local companies who donated goods, table carriers, tent putter-uppers, tranters and so on - your help was invaluable and essential. 4

Maintenance work will take place on Saturday 19th October between 9am and 11am and there are likely to be delays in traffic moving between Houghton and Stickland whilst work takes place. If your journey is urgent and cannot take place at other times, you may need to take the Hedge End/Bulbarrow route as an alternative. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. Thank you to those who have already offered assistance to undertake this essential work, your support is greatly appreciated. The Kingfisher is back. At present only one has been seen at any one time and sometimes perched on a branch over the river outside The Pamela Hambro Hall in Stickland. The swallows and house martins have flown, the blackberries ripened and it is time to reflect on the passing summer. This means work must begin on the river in anticipation of winter and increased water levels. Firstly, the statistical bit. Delcombe Wood borehole gives information on groundwater levels and is the indicator used locally to provide flood alerts. Measurements for this station are monitored by government agencies and contribute towards the bigger picture about climate change and rainfall patterns. The highest recorded groundwater level was reached at Delcombe Wood on 9th January 2014, the figure then was 143.87m which resulted in significant flooding in Houghton, Stickland, Whatcombe, Milborne St Andrew and Kingston. Normal levels are between 124.67m and 137.03m with flood alerts beginning at 130.00m - groundwater in March 2019 was close to this point. However, the level in mid-September was 125.2m and falling; hydrographs show this to be in the exceptionally low level. With this in mind, it is remarkable that the river has continued to flow as far as The Green in Stickland demonstrating the works to reduce the loss of water to swallets is still holding. The river on Clenston Road has almost dried and only flows with surface runoff water during periods of heavy rain. In terms of birdlife, the sightings of little egret have been much less this year as have that of heron due to the abundance of false water cress. Both of these elegant birds wade into clear water to fish and rely upon sight to identify their catch. There have been no sightings of whitethoat or stonechats reported this year but this is not unexpected as you would not commonly expect these species to be resident in the valley. Little was heard from the skylarks too. As previously reported, chiffchaffs did remain through winter months again and there were sightings of goldcrest and firecrest in the winter months. Sadly, and in general, broods of mallard failed due to predation and there were fewer clutches of moorhen eggs this year than in the past. It was good to see minnows, bullheads and sticklebacks present in the river as it crosses The Green. Larger fish have frequently been seen at the culverts at Pamela Hambro Hall and on The Green as they graze in the deeper flows of water beneath the bridges. It is always a difficult balance of what to do for the best. Left to nature, the river would not be a support of wildlife as it is now. Although sometimes controversial, managing the river does mean that we retain this important picturesque feature of the valley and provide a haven for wildlife. By way of a reminder, the Environment Agency regulation requires application to be made if any modification is planned within an 8 metre zone (sides, above and below) of the river banks, and that permission is granted prior to those works taking place. Any unscheduled work may have negative impact further downstream and increase the risk of property being flooded. With much excitement, a familiar species of duck returned to The Green and was seen by many at the Stickland Summer Fete. It was great for them to have enough water so late in August after the prolonged dry period. Picture by Pat Butler Stickland River Management Group
On the weekend of 31st August I held a charity sale in aid of CROHN'S AND COLITIS UK for research into this possibly little known illness, which myself and three members of my family are diagnosed with. I would like to thank all the kind people of Stickland and beyond, who came along and not only bought generously from my collected and donated items, along with my upcycled furniture and collectables, but also donated cash very generously for this charity. I hope to make this an annual event. I was able to send cheques to the charity for a total of ÂŁ574, which was way beyond my expectations. I thank you all most sincerely for this success! Linda Bryan
News from Corfe Mullen I recently realised how much I miss the valley and the people who live there! I came to the Stickland church fete on the 31st August and it was wonderful to talk to so many friends and acquaintances - a lovely afternoon! One other person who misses the valley and its people is Irene Allen from Clenston Road. Due to age and ill health, Irene had to move to a care home in Chichester to be nearer to some of her family. She and I speak on the phone every week and she often says how much she misses Winterborne Stickland - and after 50 years of living in the valley, I can fully understand! We have had a sad time recently - we lost one of our lovely little dogs, Scampi, to heart failure, and it devastated us both - and Scampi's sister Katie (we bred them at home and saw them being born) sat in the hallway for weeks looking for him - so terribly sad. But we've helped her and our other dog Lilly and ourselves to come to terms with losing Scampi - by getting another little dog - a six month old black puppy named Leo - so life is very busy! God be with you all, From Heather Sims
Book Review On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, by Ocean Vuong This phosphorescent debut novel is about a traumatised Vietnamese family trying to survive, trapped in urban, American poverty. The loosely structured tale is narrated in the form of a memoir to his mother by Little Dog, the son of Rose and grand-son of Lily, Vietnamese immigrants, neither of whom can speak much English. Little Dog - whose life closely resembles that of the author, the winner the 2017 T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry - wants almost to apologise to his Ma for the way things have turned out: the harshness of their lives; the ugliness and racism of America; and the disappointment of his gayness. For Grandma Lily, lost in a country which is utterly alien, the Vietnam War overshadows everything. She can do one thing, though: she can tell stories, her story, with nothing missed out. This is her gift, and eventually it gives Little Dog a way out. Vuong layers past and present brilliantly in a shifting series of brief episodes and striking mood-musings from within the mind of his protagonist. Occasionally, the poetic density can overwhelm. But the hyper-reality of the Little Dog's self-awareness is always a delight to read. The darkness of the novel is relieved by the piercing intensity and creative meditations of the narrator: 'That's what writing is, after all the nonsense, getting down so low the world offers a merciful new angle, a larger vision made of small things.' The pervasiveness of these things - blighted diners, fentanyl patches, spent Smith & Wesson shell casings, discarded Dunkin' Donuts cups - are not so much a repudiation of the possibility of transcendence as the annihilation of the last vestiges of Enlightenment faith in meaning or 'progress.' At one low point, Little Dog writes that 'waste, s***, excess, is what binds the living.' And yet Little Dog endures. He witnesses the wasted lives of those around him with compassion, and writes his elegy to Ma, even if she can never read it. His words outrun the violence of past and present, igniting 'into the ochre-red sparks of monarchs,' those gorgeous migratory butterflies which carry nothing but their own lives. Mark Hudson 8

The Winterborne Valley & Milton Abbas Benefice Dear Reader, In the September edition of Valley News, Alan bade his farewell and suggested that life in the parishes will be carrying on in his absence just the same as ever. We miss Alan and Harriet of course, but the church wardens and all who contribute to the running of the benefice are ensuring that services continue, that rotas are planned and that the buildings remain in good order. Prayer groups continue to meet, coffee-mornings carry on, Harvest festivals are being organised and before long it will be Advent. No-one is irreplaceable - my father used to say that the graveyards are full of indispensable people. A time of vacancy in a benefice can be a time to grow ; people can gain in confidence and discover they like working together! But it can also be a time when we feel out of our depth which is why we would all be advised, whether thriving or struggling, to make this our motto and prayer in the months ahead: 'I can do all this through him who gives me strength.'
