News from St Andrew’s, Houghton
Last month we wrote about the achievements of our athletes at the Olympics; this month it’s only right to remember the stunning achievements of our Paralympians! Those who have been able to watch some of the sports as they took place have commented on the skills, ability and dedication of those taking part. It is wonderful that they are able to be professional sportspeople in their own right, and perhaps one of the most important achievements of all – in many ways a direct result of the Paralympics - must be that society has become so much more welcoming to people with disabilities. There is still some way to go before we get to the point where there is complete acceptance and no barriers at all, but we are certainly moving forwards in this regard and long may it continue. Announcements have just been made about the COVID situation, with vaccinations being confirmed for 12-15 year olds, and booster vaccinations for those over 50. The concern must be that the virus could surge once again in the later autumn and during winter, to the point where the NHS is once again under severe pressure. We should all do everything we can to keep each other safe in these continuing difficult times. Having said that, it is good that more things are returning to a more normal situation. It is good to see activities such as clubs and fetes, coffee mornings and exercise classes, returning to village halls, church halls, sports centres and more; judging by how busy the roads have been lots of people were able to get away for a holiday over the summer – albeit a ‘staycation’ holiday. Our local area has remained relatively unknown so it’s still been possible to have long walks and see hardly anyone at all. We really are lucky to live in such wonderful countryside. We welcome our first colour advert this month – good to see that the decision to print in colour has been welcomed – and it serves as a reminder to thank all our advertisers for their support. We couldn’t provide a free magazine without them. The Valley News Team
It’s been a busy time recently at St Andrew’s! A huge thank you to everyone who supported our cream tea afternoon in August. Over £1500 was generously donated towards our community toilet project; an incredible amount! We then held our harvest festival on a lovely, warm day in September, outside in the church grounds. A team from the village put together a harvest display (which included a crow made by the children) and harvest food donations were collected for Blandford Food Bank. We will be holding a relaxed and informal service at our church on Sunday 10th October at 4:30pm, with craft and games for children. Please do join us – a warm welcome awaits!

Traquair House is Scotland’s oldest inhabited house. Visited by 27 Scottish Kings and Queens, Traquair dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491 - that’s 21 generations. Originally a royal hunting lodge, Traquair played host to Mary Queen of Scots and later as staunch Catholics the family supported the Jacobite cause without counting the cost. It’s a fascinating house to visit. Graham Case

Remembering with thanksgiving those who have died
2021 Flu Clinics Once again, our main flu clinic will be held at Winterborne Whitechurch Village Hall on Saturday 9th October. We are vaccinating more people than ever this year, so we need your help for it to be an efficient and effective day. Please note: • Patients over 50 and those 18-50 with a chronic condition are eligible • You will receive an invite via text or phone call. If you are eligible and haven’t had an invite, please call the surgery • You must book an appointment: we will not be able to vaccinate without an appointment • Patients must arrive at their allocated appointment time to make sure queues don’t build • Patients must wear a mask, wear clothes which allow easy access to the upper arm and be ready to be vaccinated • Car parking will be limited so please consider car sharing, parking away from the hall or walking. There will be parking available in the nearby school. Telephone Calls We have recently had a new telephone system installed and hopefully we have got over the initial teething problems. Please note that calls are now being recorded and we are able to listen to conversations again if necessary. We hope this will help us to uphold our zero tolerance policy with regard to abuse towards staff. New Registrar As a GP training practice we regularly host GP registrars and we have recently welcomed Dr John Dent who will be with us for a year. Dr Emily Woodcock Drs Longley, Rees and Dean are delighted to inform patients that Dr Emily Woodcock, who trained with us and has worked with us as a salaried GP for the last year, has now become a partner in the practice. Dr Woodcock is a skilled and professional GP who I’m sure you will get to know in the future. Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2021 Early signs of breast cancer can be a lump in a breast, a painful breast or armpit, or a discharge from the nipple. If any of these symptoms do present themselves there’s no need to panic. Most of the time, pain or a lump in a breast can be perfectly harmless. The pain can be a sign of a cyst or the lump can be benign. It’s always better to be sure though, so if you develop any of the above signs, please call the surgery and book an appointment with one of our GPs.
Many churches now regularly hold services to which they invite those who have been bereaved. In this Valley we hold the Service at St Mary’s, Winterborne Stickland, and this year it will be on the 7th November at 3pm. One of the privileges of being ordained is being able to conduct a moving funeral service for the loved ones of those we live and minister amongst. Then every year the church is presented with the wonderful opportunity to invite those we have met to an annual service of memorial and thanksgiving. Last year we did it all by post and knowing that we were all reading the service at the same time on the same day, did bring a level of comfort. Covid has meant that many Individuals and Families have not been able to hold the send off for their loved ones which they would have normally wished, and so our Service this year somehow seems even more important and poignant. A quiet reflective time and space to remember and give thanks for all that our loved ones have meant and indeed still mean to us. Invitation is key! So, if you know someone who might be helped by this service perhaps you could offer to come with them. I can promise you that a warm welcome is assured. We keep the service simple and uncluttered, with hymns, prayer, and a reflection. At the heart of the service is the remembrance of those who have died. The names of the deceased are read out and candles lit in commemoration. A cup of tea follows the service and Folks are invited to take the service sheet home with them. Two years ago, when we last met in the Church, we dedicated the wonderful new organ. An instrument which hopefully for many, many years will enhance the worship of those who follow you and me. The old organ is remembered by many folks because of what it meant to their worship and how it helped at times of Christenings, Weddings, Funerals, Easter, Harvest and Christmas. While we are still alive those memories live on. Just like the memories of our loved ones live on in our heads and hearts. But as we remember we also recall the messiness of life, the points where we have sinned, the points where our society fails. Remembering is not easy. It requires us to recall things we may rather forget. Anyone involved in the kind of peace and reconciliation work that took place in South Africa and Northern Ireland will tell you that remembering is difficult. And yet, to remember before God is to be ransomed, healed, and forgiven. “Do this in remembrance of me,” said Jesus, when he broke the bread and offered the wine at the last supper. Remembering is something Jesus told us to do. Our entire faith is about remembering. Remembering the healing of the relationship between humanity and God. But the idea of remembering also speaks of something profoundly human. When we meet together we remember in community and the language once more is of the healing which takes place in remembering. Together we remember our loved ones and all they have meant to us, and we ask our Dear Lord to take care of them until we all meet again. Amen. Winterborne Whitechurch Village Hall This month we have been busy improving the hall. It’s a slow process but we are getting there. We had a very kind villager who has recently moved to our village offer to do some maintenance on our toilets for which we are very grateful. We have just purchased a new fridge/freezer which replaces the old one which leaked! We are finally replacing our Library door which is rotting from the bottom up. It will take a few weeks but once installed we will be able to open the library more often. We are still hoping to get our fire exit route cleared and gravelled, if there is anyone who can help or can give us a quote, please let us know via the email below. Recently we held another successful games night, so much fun playing darts, table tennis etc. If you haven’t been, please do pop along, have a drink and chat to friends. Next Games Night is 2nd Oct at 7pm. There is an Auction coming up, please see our advert and get your items ready. There are also some Swing Jive Rock N Roll classes booked in, please also see our advert for details. In November we are holding a Christmas Fayre. We have a few stall holders booked in but are looking for a few more selling gifts, food, and Christmas items. Stall prices are £10. If you are using our bar, you can now pay by card, woohoo. all their chips on the line. There was no way I had the best hand, but I knew if a third nine came out I could win the pot, so with a 'do or die' attitude, bet all of my remaining chips. A third nine did appear and I won a huge pot. Suddenly of the 17 remaining players I had the most chips! By the time we were down to 8 players, and I was still chip leader, I knew I had a chance of winning and the nerves kicked in. My hands began to shake and I became nervous about making bets. But I also knew I couldn't fold my way to victory so played my strong hands aggressively and maintained my lead. After four and a half hours of play there were just two of us left and after some back and forth, I got a pretty decent hand. This time I didn't bet, and my opponent perhaps assuming I had nothing, went all in, as did I. Suddenly the screen flashed "Congratulations you have Won!" So next year I'm off to Vegas and part of the prize is free entry into a high stakes poker tournament. I'll let you know if I win… Nick Allen

Book Review ‘Broadsword Calling Danny Boy’: on Where Eagles Dare, by Geoff Dyer Very entertaining – it fizzes and spits like Clint’s sub-machine gun. I highly recommend this antidote to autumn blues - or indeed, any other sort of blues - for fans of the thrilling 1968 film (starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood). Dyer riffs like a naughty spirit floating somewhere between the teeth-gritting submerged reality of the action-packed film and our contemporary ironic world. In a typical passage, he describes the Burton character’s busty girl-friend, once inside the castle: ‘Busy, gorgeous, unflappable Mary, meanwhile, is unloading still more gear - explosives mainly, from that bottomless rucksack ... when there’s a knock at the door. It’s the blond [Nazi] beast, offering to show her some Bavarian hospitality in the form of an armaments room converted into a charming cafe ... The thing about Mary in this film is that as well as slipping about unnoticed she’s also unfazed… she’d have been unfazed by absolutely anything.’ Bring on the Airfix! Mark Hudson
GPS Theft Prevention A farm in Dorset has been targetted over the last few days where they have suffered a theft of GPS screens and receivers worth a total of £25,000. This is a reminder to all Farmers, contractors and operators of machinery fitted with satellite guidance systems. TAKE ACTION NOW! Owners of John Deere Starfire 6000 systems just to make you aware there is a new software version available. The new software enables the use of pin code protection to help secure these units. All newly supplied by dealer Starfire 6000 units will come with the software update. The update renders the system useless without the pin protection. So please if you have the SF6000 system do enable the pin protection on it. John Deere America have also released a video of how to protect your Starfire 6000. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YPnCcTEQ1g Please contact your local John Deere dealer if you have any doubts and they will be able to help and advise you about the best way to update this software. They will also be able to supply a lockable bracket and pin protected sticker to reduce the chances of this being stolen. For all other systems please follow these steps to help secure your units: • Remove all GPS guidance receivers, aerials, or antenna globe when not in use and keep them locked away in secure locked place when possible. • If you not going to be using the GPS equipment for a while i.e. while on road work then please remove the dome as this is a moving advert for thieves and its even easier for them to locate you if you use sign written vehicles. •Consider fitting security tethers or brackets to stop units being removed. • Consider marking screens and GP receivers with UV Marking solutions such as: https://www.datatag.co.uk/gps-survey.php and if you are an NFU Member you are eligible for a discount on the purchase of these kits. More information on this can be found here: https://www.nfuonline.com/.../save-over-15-on-the-new.../ • Consider marking these with UV pen or engraving your postcode or forensic marking such as Datatag are all options to consider. Machines fitted and registered with certain security markings are 4 times less likely to be stolen and our 6 times more likely to be recovered if they are stolen. • We can supply free of charge UV marking kits to members of Farm watch which can be used to mark these pieces of equipment. If you are a member of Farm watch please send us an email to ruralcrimeteam@dorset.pnn.police.uk with your name, address including postcode and the quantity you require, and we will post these out to you. • Store machinery inside locked barns if possible. • Where locking machines away isn’t an option consider fitting mains or battery-operated alarms to outbuildings or around the perimeter of areas where machines are stored. • If you are considering fitting CCTV then please consider fitting p15
Greetings from Corfe Mullen Hello! We are still plodding on over here. Des has been doing some more improvements outside - digging up a whole area of concrete by hand and laying a new path of paving slabs with a gravel area on both sides - it looks really nice! I've now added various large outdoor plants in large containers to finish it all off. It was a pleasure for me to come to Stickland church in September to attend my grand daughter and two youngest children's Christening and to do the bible reading during the service. It felt like " coming home":- 30 years in the same church does that to you! The church looked lovely and may I say you are lucky to have Lewis as your Rector - he is so kind. Corfe Mullen is a good place to live - so convenient for shops, vets, doctor's surgery, and post office all within easy reach, but coming back to Stickland made me realise that I miss the rural beauty of the valley - and my friends who live there. God bless you all. Heather Sims
Vegas here we come! Two years ago, a friend suggested I join a poker pub league he was in. He explained the league ran for 13 weeks and the top three players would go to a tournament in Portsmouth and play all the other winners from the region, the winner of that getting a holiday in Vegas! I was intrigued and went and found it to be a different kettle of fish to the 'kitchen table' games I was used to. There were about 15 die hard regulars who played every week. They played hard, raising with big bets and cursing loudly when they lost a hand. I felt totally intimidated so kept my head down and concentrated on not making a total fool of myself. I was knocked out mid-way through the evening and decided not to put myself through such a stressful evening ever again! But, after giving myself a strong talking-to, I did go back and within a few months found myself climbing the league leader-board although never made the top three, never got to Portsmouth. When lockdown came, we moved online and continued with our weekly games and I finally made a regional final, albeit on line. I played my usual 'conservative' game, betting when I felt I'd the best hand and folding everything else. I made it to about 30th place before being knocked out. When I made a second regional final, I knew I needed a stronger strategy so took more chances, pulled off a couple of bluffs and made it to 20th place before I was on the verge of being knocked out again. I was dealt two 9's which is a middle strength hand with lots of higher pairs available. Three other players went 'all in' putting 8

CCTV cannot be relied on fully as this won’t alert you at the time that you have intruders. • CCTV and intruder alarms will deter most thieves but make sure they are checked regularly to ensure they will work when you need them and they are placed in a position that won’t be triggered by animals or foliage moving in the wind. • Record machinery serial numbers and photographs for reference. This will help police should they be stolen with press releases and social media appeals furthering the chances of the items being recovered. • Encourage farm staff to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or vehicles to the police.
