St Andrew’s, Winterborne Houghton
The Olympics are over, after a stunning collection of individual and team triumphs, raising the spirits of the UK after a long period of dark days. Autumn has arrived, but let’s hope that it is only the official start and not an immediate change of weather – September can be delightful albeit with shorter hours of daylight, but less fierce temperatures allowing us to continue enjoying the outdoors. And it’s not all about things winding down, plants beginning to lose their summer bounce and vigour; it’s also a time of new beginnings as schools, colleges and universities gear up for their new terms. Education has been hard hit by the pandemic with school closures and pupils and students having to isolate and study online, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the way we manage COVID from now on can allow an uninterrupted learning experience. Thinking of lockdowns: did you enjoy the opportunity to do more local walks during the past 18 months? Have you now got a favourite? Perhaps if you have you might like to share it for others to enjoy, by describing it in an article for the magazine with some photos? It was while thinking about what to put in the editorial this month that memories of our first few editions of the magazine came back when we used to feature a walk each month. Here’s a chance to share your walks with others, as there may well be some that are unfamiliar but deserve to be better known. Thoughts had turned to our earliest editions when we heard from David Heath that Stephanie, his wife, had passed away. She had been diagnosed as suffering from cancer earlier this year. David and Stephanie were landlord/lady at The Crown and were very popular; not only did they introduce monthly quizzes and music events, David was instrumental in getting the group together who managed the launch of the Valley News in its current format. We send everyone’s sincere sympathy to David. Please see an article from David later in the magazine. Despite the scourge of COVID continuing to raise its head both locally and nationally, it has been very encouraging to see people getting together in more normal circumstances and enjoying more social events. We hope that sharing the pleasure of renewed friendships and social interaction will prove therapeutic and help us move forward – carefully and thoughtfully - but with more confidence that life has begun to return to more normality. And how much we value that the mundane has returned! Enjoy the autumn. The Valley News Team
Since Easter, the church services at St Andrew’s, have been held outside, in the beautiful churchyard. We have been blessed with good weather and people of all ages, from Houghton and further afield, have enjoyed the informal and fun times together. Even a herd of cows appeared in the neighbouring field for our Pet Service! The next outdoor service at St Andrew’s will be on Sunday 12th September, from 4:30-5:15pm, when we will be celebrating harvest. We would love you to join us!

We have some amazing crafters in our community. Knitting, crochet, quilting, spinning, card making, colouring to name a few. We are still working on our garden areas and would like to thank Homebase for donating some plants, we really do appreciate this and it’s made all the difference. We would also like to thank some wonderful volunteers who have been helping with the front garden. You have done an amazing job, thank you. There has been a change to the diary since last month. We have added a games night on Sat 2nd October instead of the harvest event on 3rd October. Please see our advert later in the magazine for upcoming events. We hope to see you soon. As we move into a new Triennium in the autumn the Trust Board of the Diocesan Board of Education will be joined by up to five new trustees. Might you be called by God to serve Him in this way? We have an exciting three years ahead working with schools, academies and importantly, multi-academy trusts to shape our service to meet their needs. We will be working to help every church school fulfil their deeply Christian vision; schools at the heart of the parish communities to which they belong. Milton Abbas Surgery Practice News We are pleased to announce that Dr Emily Woodcock will join Dr Longley, Dr Rees, and Dr Dean as a partner of Milton Abbas Surgery. Dr Woodcock is known to many already as she trained as a Registrar with us and has been a salaried GP with us for the last year. We are excited for the future as Dr Woodcock is an excellent GP and this will provide continuity of care for our patients. I am sure you will join with us in welcoming her! 2021 Flu Campaign This year’s annual flu campaign will be bigger than ever before with all patients over 50 eligible for a vaccination. Due to Covid 19, there was very little evidence of flu last winter so there is an expectation that we will be hit much harder this year. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a Covid booster vaccination for patients this year at the flu vaccination clinics. We are awaiting guidance from the NHS as to how and who will be providing the Covid boosters. We want to emphasise the importance of having your flu vaccination as soon as possible. We aim to run the first flu clinic at the Winterborne Whitechurch Village hall on the 9th October 2021. If you receive an invite from us, please could you make every effort to attend as we do not know if we will have the capacity for further flu clinics after this date. As a practice, we would be grateful if our patients receive their flu vaccination from us rather than going elsewhere: this will help maintain the high level of service we deliver to our patients. Invites will be sent to patients eligible for a flu vaccination shortly. Regular updates will be posted on our Website and Facebook page: please keep looking to see the dates and process to book your appointment. Note for Carers Do you care for a family member or friend who has a disability, illness or needs support in later life? It is important that we know if you are an unpaid carer so that we are aware of the extra pressures you are under and can offer you appropriate support and information. If you haven’t already, please let the surgery know you are an unpaid carer and who you care for, and we can record this information on your records. You can also pick up a carer’s information pack at Reception or look at the virtual version on our dedicated carers page on our surgery website. For all of your caring and for all of your caregiving – thank you!
Winterborne Whitechurch Parish Council June & July Meetings 2021 The Parish Council finally returned to face to face meetings in the Old School Room after many months of holding them on Zoom. 23rd June 2021 Amongst items discussed were: The new bench has now been installed outside the Reading Room replacing the wooden one there. A number of very complimentary comments have been received. The new defibrillator has been ordered online and awaiting the invoice and hosting agreement for The Caravan Sales to sign to complete. Complaints have been from residents regarding rubble from a house on Dorchester Hill which is causing a trip hazard, also the hedges further down are overhanging the pavement. Dorset Council has been advised of the issues. New Code of Conduct and Register of Interest Training - The clerk advised that he had been on the training course for this and that the Dorset Council is introducing a new code of conduct for all their councillors and suggests that all Town & Parish Councisl may like to follow so that if there were any complaints which they had to deal with it would be a better system than with the various codes of conduct used by different councils currently. They also have updated the registration of interest system on their website and all councillors now have to complete theirs on line digitally and not by hard copy via their own councils. The Queen’s Green Canopy – This is a scheme for all communities to plant a tree for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in

weather was kind, too! Like everyone I find it a relief and SO nice to be able to meet up socially once again - after so long. Let's pray that we can continue to do so without any further "lockdowns". Best wishes to everyone. From Heather Sims
Stephanie Heath 1947-2021 Many of your readers will, I am sure, remember Stephanie, or Steph as she preferred to be called. In Autumn 2002 Steph, Olivia, Giles and I were welcomed into the village of Winterborne Stickland as they prepared to take over the Shire Horse public house. Having just about unpacked, we had sat down to a take-away meal when there was a knock at the front door. Outside stood two gentlemen who invited us to the latest house party which was held on a Friday night to get people back into the habit of coming out to the pub to socialize. I remember that Ron Dawson and Mike Ford were the two gentlemen and I think the hosts were John and Mary at the Mill House. We were delighted with the welcome we received, and met many of the villagers we would soon welcome as customers and friends in The Crown, as the pub returned to it's original name. We had many happy days at the pub, but an operation looming and the sale by Ringwood Brewery made us decide to move on. However, we never forgot the pub and the community, and often wondered how you were all getting on. The family moved around quite a bit in the intervening years, from Dorset to Leicestershire and finally to North Devon. In 2017 we came to South Molton in North Devon to create an Ale & Wine Bar. After the usual frustrations with planning and licensing we opened for business in August 2018, only to be closed in March 2020 as the pandemic struck. We had a good time in the main with quizzes and live music livening up the atmosphere. Sadly toward the end of that year Steph became unwell; after several scans and tests cancer was diagnosed and Steph had major surgery to remove a tumour from her bladder. Initially things looked much better and she had her first precautionary chemo treatment in May. However she then began to deteriorate, and had to go back into hospital in June. During a wearying four week period several more scans were taken and finally we were told the cancer had returned, was widespread and could not be treated.. Steph and I had decided to move in with Olivia, our elder daughter, as we had just sold the bar, so Steph came home to Olivia's on Wednesday 21st July. Our two younger children, Lydia and Giles, travelled down to see her on Thursday 22nd and once Steph had seen them it seemed that she stopped fighting. She passed peacefully away in the early hours of Saturday 24th July, the day before her birthday. We were all shaken by the speed of Steph's passing, thinking we would have her home for several weeks before the end, but it was not to be. Steph didn't want a funeral, but she did want all her family and friends to have a party to raise a glass (Or two!) in her memory. Consequently we have decided that, on Saturday 2nd October, we will be holding that party in The Crown, a place Steph and I loved. Please contact me on the email address below if you would like to attend. Olivia, Lydia, Giles and I look forward to seeing many of you then. With good wishes to you all, Dave Heath djheath51@gmail.com
Book Review The Octopus Man, by Jasper Gibson This is an extraordinarily lively and intensely imagined tale of a schizophrenic man battling to find a way to live without being sledge-hammered by sedatives. Despite this context, The Octopus Man is very readable, with many humorous and tender scenes. For 19 years, Tom, formerly a brilliant law student, has been hearing the voice of Malamock, the Octopus God, who is training him ‘To be a Transmigrant. To wake up from myself.’ Drink, drugs, meat, sex and – especially - disloyalty are off the menu; Malamock punishes transgressions with massive internal shocks. Tom’s devoted, hard-pressed sister, Tess, despairs: her brother will not take the new trial pill, for fear that it will do exactly as intended, which is to eradicate the voice of his god, leaving him without purpose – and without moments of all-enveloping, visionary transcendence. ‘“Thomas,” He says as I stop, overwhelmed by the beauty of it all. “You are my soul,” and my left side erupts with His love, a love of unimaginable depth and stillness.’ Is this a re-imagining of the ecstasy of the saints of old? Gibson says that ‘this is not an anti-psychiatric or indeed political novel,’ unlike, for example, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the boisterous and subversive 1960s novel by Ken Kesey. However, Gibson does intend to expose the demeaning and ‘catastrophic loss of power’ which some of those diagnosed with schizophrenia experience. This compassionate aim is successful, though the reader might question the generally very negative portrayal of psychiatric treatment and the absence of profound anxiety in Tom. One is also left wondering at the end about the plight of poor Tess, forever on the rack of her brother’s mood-swings, with no hope in sight after he tells her that he is not ill, “I just hear a voice no one else can hear … I am the Octopus God. I am older than the universe.” Yet, if she can bear it, he can live with his Malamock-entrusted mission of helping people with mental health problems, once he has requalified as a lawyer. A difficult life, but not a wasted one. Mark Hudson
“O be Joyful” as choirs return! Many choirs and choral societies have been unable to sing together since March 2020 but now restrictions are lifting Wareham Choral Society is planning a return to music making in September 2021. Their Monday evening rehearsals at Lady St Mary’s Church will include the standard Christmas fare including carols and excerpts from Handel’s “Messiah” but also an exciting newly commissioned work. The “Dorset Jubilate” has been written for the Choral Society by composer Philip Singleton, and as well as the familiar words of the Jubilate, it incorporates settings of poems by local poet Thomas Hardy – “The Darkling Thrush”, and “The Oxen” which adds a Christmas feel to the piece due to be first performed on 4th December 2021 in a concert with Briantspuddle Singers. Composer Philip Singleton says: “It is my sincere hope that the “Dorset Jubilate” should contain something to appeal to all… and what better to set than poems by Thomas Hardy? The Jubilate invites Christians to be joyful and to praise God, while Hardy’s poem “The Oxen” takes the form of a pastoral carol-like setting, and in “The Darkling Thrush” a lone wanderer on the point of despair finds solace in the song of an unseen thrush – suggested here by solo trumpet.” Briantspuddle Singers meet on Tuesdays at 7.30 at Briantspuddle Village Hall and Wareham Choral Society on Monday evenings at 7.30pm in Lady St Mary’s Church, Wareham, and would welcome new members for all voice parts. For more information please contact: Andrea Smith, 01929 471412. Allanandrea.smith@gmail.com For further information on Philip Singleton please visit: https://composerphil.wixsite.com/home
News from Corfe Mullen Hi everyone! It was so good to see some old friends at the Clenston Church fete on Saturday 14th August! When I say "old friends " I meant people I've known for years and years - well I did live in Winterborne Stickland for over 30years! I quess I must look a lot older now and having had various health problems recently, I feel positively ancient! But it was good to chat to everyone and catch up on their news. It certainly bought back memories of the years I helped at the fete - does anyone remember Splat the Rat and the children 's lucky dip? Children would come back umpteen times to have another lucky "dip " to see what goodies they could get! I notice that the same people every year help with these fund raising events - such wonderful commitment - and I think maybe Charlotte and Piers Chichester need special mention - the hard work they put in every year is huge! So thank you Charlotte and Piers! So glad the 8

Rise In Theft of Catalytic Converters The Force is issuing crime prevention advice to motorists following an increase in catalytic converter thefts over the last year due to the rising value of the precious metals they contain. Dorset Police data reveals there were 94 reports of catalytic converters stolen from vehicles in the county between January and June 2020. This increased by 368 per cent – 440 reports – during the same period in 2021. These thefts can have a real impact on victims. It is not only an inconvenience, but also disrupts day-to-day tasks, such as taking children to school and getting to and from work. Catalytic converter thefts can also leave victims with pricey repair bills, increased premiums or even having their vehicles written off. Superintendent Heather Dixey said: “Our officers are working hard to prevent this crime. A number of vehicles being used to commit these offences have been seized recently and our crime scene investigators are working hard to forensically link offenders to these vehicles and the crimes. “Dorset Police acknowledges that this is a concern for our communities and we are doing everything we can to prevent it, but this crime can happen in a matter of seconds. We are asking for your help. We can’t stop this crime without you, so if you know something please help your community and contact us.” Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “The theft of a catalytic converter can have a huge impact if, like many of us, you rely on your vehicle. I’d like to reassure people that a huge amount of work is being done between the police and partner agencies to crack down on this crime, but people need to be aware that it is a growing problem. “Please, be aware of the police advice to motorists about what you can do to reduce the chance of becoming a victim. And if you do see anything suspicious, make sure you report it immediately.” There are ways you can protect your catalytic converter from thieves. Think about where you park - If you can, park your vehicle in a locked garage. If this isn’t an option, then park it in a well-lit and well-populated area. Park close to fences, walls or a kerb and avoid parking your vehicle half on the pavement and half on the road, as this may make it easier for thieves to access the catalytic converter. If you are parking in a public car park, consider parking alongside other vehicles. This will make it harder for thieves to get close enough to get underneath the vehicle. Mark your catalytic converter - You can mark your catalytic converter with a unique code that will relate back to your vehicle. This is done using SmartWater and is an incredibly effective way of preventing theft. SmartWater is a forensic liquid, which can withstand heat of up to 600 degrees. It can be applied to car parts and each batch has a unique code which allows it to be traced back to the owner. You can report any information to us online at dorset.police.uk/do-it-online. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers, an independent charity working to help communities on 0800 555 111.

Alert - Vaccine Passport Scams Action Fraud has received over 700 reports from members of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with a “digital passport” that “proves you have been vaccinated against COVID-19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuine-looking websites that steal your personal and financial information. How to protect yourself: In the UK, coronavirus vaccines will only be available via the National Health Services of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. You can be contacted by the NHS, your employer, a GP surgery or pharmacy local to you, to receive your vaccine. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. The NHS will never ask you for your bank account or card details.
