Find old fashioned fun at Covered Wagon Days

DEL NORTE—The 2016 Covered Wagon Days is shaping up to be one for the books this year, bringing back and improving upon what has been done in the past, and adding a few new, great ideas. The 2016 theme, “Live the Adventure,” honors the courageous spirit of the pioneers and natives who those who built our beautiful San Luis Valley, and reflects the modern echoes of this adventurous attitude. Mr. John Stuever’s family will be parade marshals in his honor. First, stop by Kathy’s Fabric Trunk and vote on a favorite in the “Pieces of Del Norte” Quilt Show, which runs from Monday, August 1st to Saturday, August 6th. A chuckwagon pig roast dinner will be held on Friday, August 5 at the encampment behind Jack’s Market, beginning at 6 p.m. Ron Martinez, from Mountain View Restaurant, will be roasting up the whole pig, and other delights will be courtesy of Calvillo’s Mexican Kitchen, and the Covered Wagon Days, Inc. board members. Desserts will be donated by Sunflour Bakery. A portion of the proceeds raised will benefit local veterans from all eras who reside in the San Luis Valley. Fred Hargrove will be entertaining us with his western stylings with music and cowboy lore. The event is dedicated to Dr. Jack Bilak, USAF Captain, who will be giving a presentation about his book, “Flight Medic,” about his time in Vietnam evacuating injured soldiers. The dinner is $15 for adults, $7 for children 6 - 13 years of age, children under 6 years of age free. Wildwood Sounds is also offering a concert at 7pm on August 5 with

Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen, playing the very best in contemporary and traditional folk music. According to their website, compassrosemusic. com, “Steve and Cindy have been performing together for 25 years, bringing together their love of traditional music and their wealth of original songs. Accompanying themselves with guitars and concertinas, their live performances are known for rich harmony, compelling songs and a good dose of humor. Their six duet albums have appeared on many folk Top Ten lists, from the WFMT Midnight Special (Chicago) to The Boston Globe.” Haefeli’s Honey Farms are again hosting the “It’s The Bee’s Knees 5K Trail Walk/Run.” It will take off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning from the annual Val Alto Study Club’s Pancake Breakfast in the old Community Banks of Colorado building parking lot, which opens at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The “Bee’s Knees” will begin on pavement, and proceed to the dirt trail around D-Mountain, then back on pavement around the DN Elementary & Middle School to 160 to the Finish. The merchants of Del Norte welcome all comers with special sales and hospitality on Saturday, parade day, with their open houses on Grande Avenue. At 11 a.m. the Del Norte Volunteer Fire Department will host a BBQ lunch at the firehouse, so be sure to stop by. Right after the parade, cars, motorcycles and trucks will line up on Columbia Street for the CWD car show. All entries are welcome in the parade and at the car show, so bring a vehicle to show off and tell about.

Grab some homemade ice cream from the tractor club, across Grande on Columbia. Also after the parade, some of the magnificent draft horses and wagons will be available for a closer look in the parking lot at the old Community Banks of Colorado building. Visitors can catch a ride on a haywagon, which will take a historical tour of the town, beginning at the Rio Grande County Museum. The tour is a can’t-miss event! Be sure to visit the Rio Grande County Museum while out and about, they’ll be serving up ice cream after the parade and will be showing some special exhibits, include a Native American Textiles and Tools Exhibit and a Culturally Modified Trees Exhibit in conjunction with the Rio Grande National Forest Service. Come learn about how the San Luis Valley’s Native Americans lived! The Del Norte churches have put a new twist on their Thursday night dinner, which will be a potluck beginning at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, themed “Meet Your Neighbor Night.” The annual Community Church Service will take place in Del Norte Park at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7. High Valley Community Center will host activities on Saturday, Aug. 6 which will suit folks of any age, including the annual horseshoes tournament, mud volleyball, inflatables for the kiddos, vendors, pickleball, games for all ages and many more surprises. For anyone that missed the Dog Daze Dog Show in Del Norte Park last year, don’t miss it this year. Bring a dog or just watch the fun. It starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday; all dogs, all

breeds, all talents will be welcome! Del Norte or Coloring Outside the Celebrate with the Del Norte Lines, 839 1st Ave, Monte Vista. Library by purchasing books at a real bargain, paperbacks just $.25 and hardcovers $.50. All funds raised will go toward library expansion, so come support this Del Norte jewel and help them to grow and better serve the community. The Fort Garland Cavalry will once again bring nostalgia and elegance to our parade on Saturday, Aug. 1. They will be setting up their encampment behind Jack’s Market on Friday and invited everyone to experience and learn about life in the 1870s on the campaign trail. The Flying W Wranglers from Colorado Springs will be offering an old fashioned ranch dance featuring western swing and country western music to dance to, under the Big Top tent behind Jack’s Market. Odin Dean opens the festivities at 6 p.m. Great food and refreshments will be served from the chuckwagon. Bring your dancing partner or sit and enjoy some world-class music and cowboy humor. The concert is $20 per adult, $10 for children 6 - 13 years of age, children under 6 are free. Posters are up around the Valley with the full schedule, or pick up brochures to take home at a number of locations including Del Norte’s restaurants, the Rio Grande County Museum and area visitors centers. Chuckwagon Dinner to benefit local veterans

DEL NORTE—The Covered Wagon Days Veterans Benefit Committee, of Del Norte, is sponsoring an old-fashioned chuck wagon dinner with proceeds to go to help local veterans in need and to provide mileage money for veterans who have to travel for medical treatments. The dinner will be served from an authentic, Old West chuckwagon just east of Jack’s Market, in Del Norte, on Friday, August 5 beginning at 6 p.m. Look for the campfire and the chuckwagon. The dinner will consist of a whole roast pig and green chili stew, cooked by Ron Martinez of Mountain View Restaurant. Side dishes will be provided by Calvillo’s Mexican Comfort Kitchen and the Covered Wagon Days Veteran’s Benefit Committee board members, and shall consist of homemade bread and gorditas, baked potatoes with fixings and Dutch oven fruit cobblers. Flying W Wranglers returning to Covered Wagon Days DEL NORTE— Covered Wagon Days is proud to announce the return of a great southern Colorado western swing band, The Flying W Wranglers, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. The Flying W Wranglers have been making music for over 63 years. They are the second oldest western music group in the world. The Flying W Wranglers are one of today’s premier western music groups, carrying on this unique traditional style of music that we all have loved down through the years. The Flying W Wranglers have performed at Carnegie Hall and at the Grand Ole Opry. Today they are riding down the trail with four of the most talented individuals in the business. Heading up this diverse group of cowboys is David Bradley, who hails from the west Texas town of Muleshoe. Bradley is a former member of the two-time Grammy award winning group, the “Sons of the Pioneers.” David Bradley is an award winning Yodeler who was voted “2013 Yodeler of the Year,”

by the Academy of Western Artists. Next, from Colorado Springs, Colo. is Luke Tripp, a world-class violinist and western swing fiddle player. Tripp studied classical music for 18 years, in the country of Brazil. His command of the instrument is “Krazy!” Tripp also sings lead and harmony vocals. Adam Gardino is also from Colorado Springs. In 2012, Gardino won the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Wynnfield, Kans. Gardino is a fantastic songwriter, singing lead and harmony vocals. Last but not least, is Cowboy Verolen Kersey, from Colorado Springs. Kersey is a world-class bassist who also plays about 20 different instruments. Kersey spent 18 years traveling the universe, while performing with the United States Air Force Academy Band. Kersey sings lead and harmony vocals, and he also brings a great deal of comedy to the stage. The Flying W Wranglers have a new album titled “Back On Track.”

The new album features eleven great cowboy and western swing songs. Along with some fantastic yodeling, superb instrumentation and unique western harmony, the Flying W Wranglers are demonstrating that the best is yet to come! The New York Times says, “the Flying W Wranglers are a cross between the Riders in the Sky and Asleep at the Wheel.” Local performer, Odin Dean, will open the concert with his unique brand of western music. The outdoor concert and dance will take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 on Highway 160 just east of Jack’s Market in Del Norte. A big canopy will be in place so in case of inclement weather, the show will go on! RGC Museum hosting events

DEL NORTE—Rio Grande County Museum will host a multitude of events in conjunction with the Covered Wagon Days. The museum will be hosting the annual ice cream social starting at 11 a.m. Proceeds from the social will be used to help purchase exhibit materials. The Louise Colville and Mark Jones Historical Hay Wagon Tours will also begin at the museum on Saturday at 12:30p.m. The museum will also be featuring two exhibits over the weekend. The Native American textiles and tools exhibit includes projectile points, pottery, baskets and other tools to

enlighten modern valley residents and visitors about how our ancestors lived. Also, in conjunction with the Rio Grande National Forest Service, there will a featured exhibit on Culturally Modified Trees, that shows various trees and the many ways that Native Americans would have used the local perennials to sustain their way of life. If you’re planning for future exhibits, there will be a Fall Festival of Foods event on October 8th, featuring traditional foods from the many different cultures that have influenced the San Luis Valley.
