Helping Solve Oklahoma’s Obesity Crisis BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center hopes to decrease the rate of obesity in our state, one client at a time. By Lorrie Ward Helping Oklahomans stay at a healthy weight is a primary concern for Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center, even more so now that the Center for Disease Control has released a national health alert on obesity. “Oklahoma’s obesity rate is at 31.1 percent, up from 30.4 percent just last year. The national obesity rate is 35.7 percent. This is a very serious issue,” says Malissa. Malissa notes that the CDC indicates that if Oklahoma continues on this trajectory, it will be at over 66 percent obesity in 2030, putting it near the top of the list out of all the states in adult obesity rates. “We are facing a serious health crisis right in our state.” She also points out that in addition to the health risks of obesity,

which has been linked to a whole host of diseases including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, Oklahoma’s obesity rates are costing a tremendous amount of money. “It’s not all about money – people are dying of these diseases,” she says. “But Oklahoma as a state would save over seven billion dollars in health costs if we would reduce these rates.” Even though these staggering numbers create a dim outlook, Malissa asserts that this report does not need to be a prophetic one. “It’s interesting to note that new studies show just a seven percent BMI (body mass index) reduction can help prevent many diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, and improve overall health in general.” Malissa believes that bad

habits are what created the obesity epidemic in the first place, an epidemic which spreads across the socioeconomic spectrum in our society and knows no cultural barriers. She points to several reasons for the problem, but most can be traced back to modern society’s dependence on immediate gratification, which has produced a more sedentary lifestyle, a love for fast food, and a fascination with technology. BA Med Spa’s weight loss protocol concentrates not only on HCG, which has proved to be a wonderful and helpful aid in the process, but also on replacing bad habits with good ones, like engaging in regular exercise, consuming a healthy diet including fresh fruits and vegetables, (continued on page 15)

Most people don't start listening for the jingle of sleigh bells until the night before Christmas. Tom Phillips is able to ride his Harley and enjoy life again after a knee replacement from Dr. LaButti.

By Joshua Danker-Dake Tom Phillips, 55, of Hominy worked for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections for over 22 years. “I weigh over 300 pounds, and when I retired, I had over 22 years on my feet. My knee was worn out because I was heavy and because I was standing and walking on concrete for so long,” he says. “I had very little cartilage left in my right knee, and I was in pain every time I tried to walk.” Tom paid several visits to an orthopedist. His visits there included X-rays and an MRI, and he had two injections in his right knee, he says. “The first injection reduced the pain for about two months, but the second shot did not help at all.” Tom then visited Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I told him I was ready for surgery,” Mike said. “I had the surgery on August 11, 2011, and after two days in the hospital, I was sent home. Dr. LaButti’s office arranged for home health to visit and determine my needs. A nurse visited and helped me set up my physical therapy, and the physical therapist visited my home three days a week for about five weeks.”

The surgery and the rehabilitation program were successful, Tom says. “My wound healed very quickly, and within a couple of weeks, the strength in my right leg began to return. Our mission is to serve God and love people, and our giveaways are some of the ways that we do that. They’re some of our favorite things to do.” The Rock Church is a multi-racial, diverse church with a strong, active body of members. They meet at Union High School’s Performing Arts Center at 6636 S. Mingo. “The spirit of giving and generosity is alive at The Rock Church,” says Pastor Billy Joe. “We’ve had people join our church who were touched in some way by one of our outreaches.”

The Rock Church’s annual Touched by a Turkey Day, in its fourth year, will be held Saturday, November 17, the weekend before Thanksgiving. The Rock Church will again be
