Families Save and Earn at JBF The next Just Between Friends sales events will be held in Owasso, September 13-16 next to Reasor’s and in Broken Arrow/Bixby at the SpiritBank Event Center, October 11-13. By Sheryl Sowell The economy continues to be a big topic of conversation right now for people of all walks of life – everyone is trying to figure out how to pinch a few extra pennies and earn some extra cash. A perfect solution for many families is buying and consigning at Just Between Friends, the nation’s leading children’s and maternity consignment event. Just when the economy seems to be getting better, something else pops up, and it finds a way to contribute to inflation and the shrinkage of everyone’s take-home pay. This is taking its toll on many families’ budgets, especially when it comes to purchasing for back to school. As many parents know, buying clothes, shoes and other items needed for school can get expensive.

Participating in JBF is a win-win financially for both consignors and shoppers. Consignors typically make 65 percent of sales from their merchandise, while those who consign and volunteer make 70 percent. Consignors also have the advantage of creating their own prices for items no longer being used around the house. With better returns than most consignment shops can offer and far less hassle than a garage sale, consignors are able to take all their items in one day and choose to pick up or donate items that don’t sell. According to Marcy Leffingwell, one of the new owners of Just Between Friends Broken Arrow/Bixby, the prices and selection for shoppers is unrivaled, and they can find an (continued on page 28)

Most of us schedule an annual physical with the family doctor, go to the dentist twice a year, and have our vision checked annually. So why do we never have our hearing checked? Good question, especially when the American Medical Association recommends doing so annually. Dr. Gene Woodard is a licensed audiologist and owner of Advantage Audiology & Hearing Aids, located at the Farm Shopping Center in Tulsa. Dr. Gene, as he is affectionately known by his patients, says, “It is sad to live a life less than to the fullest because of difficulty hearing.” Dr. Gene and Hearing Instrument Specialist Jeff King provide high-quality personal (continued on page 28)

JJoin the 96 Day Challenge BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is partnering with Mix96 to bring you the 96 Day Challenge, and is also offering a new filler, Belotero. By Sheryl Sowell BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is teaming up with Mix96 and the American Heart Association to present the 96 Day Challenge. The campaign began in August and lasts through November 23, with the goal of encouraging participants to make small, sustainable

changes to improve their overall health or the health of their families. “The changes that we hope to promote will focus on improving overall fitness, nutrition and general health,” explains James Cole of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center. “While weight loss and

Founder Malissa Spacek and Patient Coordinator James Cole of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center.

improved appearance certainly factor in to portions of the promotion, they are only a small part of what we are envisioning for this project. It is our hope to motivate people to adopt one small change that they can sustain for 96 days and hopefully make a permanent part of a healthier lifestyle.” James says that for the 96 Day Challenge, BA Med Spa will offer their weight loss package at a discounted price. “We are also offering a reward program for those participating in the challenge. For every 10 pounds lost, you will receive $10 in credit to BA Med Spa.” James emphasizes, however, that the healthy lifestyle changes do not revolve solely on weight loss. BA Med Spa is encouraging participants to log on to the BA Med Spa Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest pages to share stories, fitness tips and ideas to help motivate others. The promotion will include special appearances, a water bottle giveaway and more. Listen to Mix96 for updates, and call BA Med Spa to join the 96 Day Challenge today. Though many amazing benefits come along with weight loss, it can also cause loss of

volume in places you don’t want it to occur, such as your face. BA Med Spa offers a choice of fillers, depending on the patient’s preference and desired results, and they are proud to announce the release of their newest filler, Belotero. Belotero is an FDAapproved dermal filler that seamlessly integrates with your skin and adapts to your facial contours, and therefore plumps and adds volume to your face while softening and smoothing lines and wrinkles. Artefill is a popular filler available at BA Med Spa, and can last up to five years. “Artefill is an excellent option for revolumination of the face that will save you time, money and energy, as it requires fewer injections than other fillers,” says James. “Because it is a filler, you will see immediate results. The number of injections required varies depending on the person.” Artefill is unique because it activates your own collagen. More injections may be required up front, but over time you will need fewer injections because the filler lasts longer and your own collagen begins to replace the Artefill. BA Med Spa will host an

Artefill event on Friday, September 28, with free consultations and pre-selling of Artefill at discounted prices. “You’ll save about $300 per syringe,” says James, who will be the consultant leading the event. Refreshments will be served, and attendees will receive education on the benefits of choosing Artefill. Three time slots are available: 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. A limited number of spaces are available, so please RSVP by calling (918) 872-9999. Malissa Spacek is the founder of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center, and Dr. James Campbell is the medical director. Their goal is to help patients obtain a healthier existence and more youthful appearance through weight loss programs and a variety of cosmetic procedures. SSignature Finds Permanent Home Signature Interiors, Flowers and Gifts has settled into its final, permanent location at 15017 S. Grant St. in Bixby.

By Tara Waugh There is a new location for one of the Tulsa area’s favorite unique boutiques, Signature Interiors, Flowers and Gifts. This will be their last move, since owner and designer Debbie Hunter bought the building where the dazzling place now resides. Debbie’s mind is now at rest, not having to worry about moving again, and her customers are happy with their new location at 151st and Memorial in Bixby. The new store is a place that

every person in Tulsa and surrounding areas needs to visit. When customers walk in, the aroma of flowers and candles gently permeates the air. Beautiful colors, stunning pieces of art, extraordinary pieces of furniture, and fresh and silk flower arrangements, among so many other items, can leave a client spellbound. A professional floral or interior designer is always on the floor to guide customers. Debbie says, “There are

no high pressure sales. I want our clients to have an experience.” Serving the Tulsa area for over 17 years, Signature Interiors, Flowers and Gifts has established itself as a one-of-akind, full-service boutique that concentrates on customer service and delivering exquisite results. This store can do whatever its clients want. They truly do it all: weddings, corporate events, interior design, floral design, gifts. They can even cater their events, should a client need that service. Debbie explains that they see each project through “from concept to completion.” Debbie Hunter is a design visionary. Being inspired by her 7th grade art teacher and discovering her passion early on, Debbie planned her future to become an interior designer. Debbie holds a degree in interior design from OSU and has more than 27 years of design experience. Debbie served 11 years as principal designer at an interior design company in Chicago before establishing Signature Interiors in Tulsa. Her work has been recognized in Better Homes & Gardens, Windows Walls, and the Chicago Tribune.

The forward-thinking design expert revealed that she plans on opening up her dream home, which is located on 40 acres, into a bed and breakfast, where a chapel would reside. This would be a bride and groom’s dream come true – Signature Interiors – a distinctive, one-stop shop for weddings. Hopefully, we will hear more about this soon! You can tell that the very charismatic owner loves what she does. When she speaks of her favorite part of her job, she says, “It’s like Christmas every day. With the gifts and flowers changing, you really get a sense of the ever-changing seasons.” Signature Interiors is unquestionably a physical representation and manifestation of the cycles of the year. To make her boutique stand out, she uses different markets to find her unique gifts and furniture pieces, letting different items take her to places that she would never expect, from a design point of view. “Right now the current design trends are focusing on being eco-friendly. The motto ‘recycle, reuse, and refurbish’ is very popular right now.” Following that trend,

Debbie has been finding vintage pieces and revamping those pieces and making them her own signature style. The new Signature Interiors, Flowers and Gifts store embodies Debbie’s philosophy. She says, “I want our designs to be as individualized as our clients.” This guiding force is shared by all of the experienced and creative floral and interior designers on staff. So, whether you come to peruse their one-of-a-kind, wellcrafted gifts and furniture or if you need a vision for your wedding, home or corporate event, visit their new and final location and experience this magical, unparalleled boutique in all its seasonal glory.

CGet a Leg Up on Veins Advanced Cosmetic Medicine offers solutions for unsightly and sometimes painful leg veins. By Sheryl Sowell The hot summer days are winding down – you’ve been running errands in shorts, wearing skirts to work, and hitting the pool in your swimsuit. Chances are your legs have been on display all day, every day, and you can’t help but notice all of their imperfections. For many, unsightly leg veins are a real problem. Fall will be here before you know it, and that is the perfect season to begin treatment to get rid of those unattractive and sometimes painful leg veins. Mallory Spoor-Baker, D.O., of Advanced Cosmetic Medicine suggests calling now to schedule your free consultation for leg vein therapy this upcoming cooler season. Generally, the best time of year to receive leg vein treatments is during the fall. You may experience a slight reddening or swelling of the skin after treatments (and legs can look worse before they look better), so most people prefer to keep their legs covered during this transitional period. During the cooler weather, when they are already covered up from head to toe, is an ideal time to start treatments. In addition, Dr. Spoor-Baker instructs her

patients to wear compression hosiery for two weeks, which help aid in the healing process, making treatments work better. Spider veins, also known as broken capillaries, are thin and

hormones, spider and varicose veins are more prevalent in women than in men. “Heredity and occupation, as well as overall health status, have a lot to do with whether people develop

uncomfortable and sometimes painful, the main reason most people decide to have them treated is cosmetic – they are simply unpleasant to look at. Two methods are available to eliminate unsightly leg veins. The first method is called sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink. The second method is a laser procedure in which a light device uses the energy of light to damage the vessels, causing them to shut down. This treatment is used by placing a hand-held unit on the skin. Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered through the hand piece. No local anesthesia or pain medicine is needed and appointments last one hour. The number of treatments depends upon the vessels, their size, and other factors. Three to five treatments are the norm, again depending on various factors. Leg vein treatments are performed one month apart. To schedule a free consultation to begin leg vein therapy this fall, call Advanced Cosmetic Medicine at (918) 280-0270.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR NEXT PAIR OF EYE GLASSES Do you have a strong prescription? Are you walking around with an unfilled prescription in your pocket? Did you know it is best to get it filled ASAP? Do you realize that strong RX’s DEMAND greater precision with optical center, Bi-focal and MRP placement? Have you had problems with the vision and fit you may have received at shops that herd you through like cattle? Are you hard to fit? Large or small hat size with eyes set close over the nasal area combined with the lower ear syndrome means you need an experienced optician to fit you and keep your eyewear maintained.

Are you tired of feeling baited by unrealistic prices? Only to find out that the eyewear is stripped-down S.V. versions that are cheap, unattractive, fit improperly, scratch and break easily. Many won’t hold adjustments and just don’t have the features you need.

Have you tried conventional surfaced no-line progressives in the past and failed to adapt? Technological advances in “DIGITAL” lens manufacturing have radically improved the optics, fields of vision and dramatically reduced distortion so that almost anyone can wear them. Check out the Seiko Perfas Prestige II on the first two YouTube videos at the bottom of our homepage. These lenses could be extremely helpful to contact lens wearers, those who wear readers over contacts, and those who cannot or will not rely on corrective surgery for their visual correction needs.

Did you know that Precision Optical has been operating since 1994? Located at the northwest corner of 81st and Elm Place in Broken Arrow, we are one of the VERY FEW optical shops that can do emergency gold soldering of your broken eyeglass frames. We can also replace worn and scratched lenses in your fine sunglasses with gray or brown polarized lenses.

You should get your eyes examined every 1-2 years and more often if medical conditions warrant. The eye exam is a two-fold procedure. 1.) Medical health 2.) Corrective refraction. Many are pleasantly surprised to find they see much better after the exam and new lenses, when originally they had felt they had not changed much. Call us today to set up an eye exam!

Precision Optical stocks 800-1000 frames and sunglasses including: Christian Dior · Giorgio Armani · Ralph Lauren · Covergirl · Kenneth Cole · Marchon & Flexon · Tura & Turaflex Ted Baker · Charmant · Dana Buchman · Maui Jim/RX · Wily X/RX · Norma Kamali · And much more!

The key is PRECISION MEASUREMENT and TOTAL ACCURACY. For the past 18 years, George has provided superior service in Broken Arrow, Coweta and South Tulsa and yes, he cuts the lenses himself.

CCustom Cabinets for Christmas Order in September, enjoy in December. By Shelly Robinson The heat of summer is easing, and now is the time for homeowners to tackle those projects that have been put off in anticipation of cooler weather. If your fall plans include replacing cabinetry in the kitchen or bath, consider the options available at Brunson Cabinet Company in Oologah. Owner Bill Jack would be happy to visit with you and show you just how affordable and stressfree custom cabinetry can be. Everyone desires a beautiful home, especially with the holidays just around the corner, and September is the last month to order in time for Christmas installation. Bill says in a time of tight budgets and inspiring do-it-yourself shows, many homeowners are tempted to cut remodeling costs by purchasing ready-made kitchen and bathroom cabinetry at big box stores, but the results of piecing together stock cabinets are often not what the homeowner envisioned. “Many times people wind up way over budget trying to make something work in a space that it doesn’t really fit into, resulting in a lot of frustration and additional cost.” “Everything we build is

custom made and an exact fit for the allotted space in our clients’ kitchen or bath. Our products will fit perfectly in the space for which they were designed,” explains Bill. This eliminates the need for filler type boards or wasted space and makes the price competitive with the big box stores. There is also the added value of old-fashioned customer service, which is hard to come by these days. Bill will take care of all the measurements and calculations, and an appointment in the Oologah showroom, conveniently located just off Highway 169, allows customers to view a large variety of samples. Bill offers homeowners the unique opportunity to deal directly with the manufacturer so there are no markups or sales commissions, and everything is built onsite in his shop in Oologah. Brunson Cabinet Company has been in business since 1956. Bill has owned the business for the past 13 years and offers an all-wood cabinet, so you can be assured of quality workmanship and materials. A large variety of beautiful woods is available to choose from, including oak, maple,

making this elegant and durable product available for those with a stricter budget. Getting your project started is as easy as a phone call. Bill will take your job from the planning and measuring stage through installation, finishing with minimum stress and maximum value. He will create a computerized drawing, showing the project with your choice of materials, and if there is ever a concern after the job is complete, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you are dealing directly with the owner of the company. According to Bill, Brunson Cabinet Company has satisfied customers across Oklahoma and the surrounding states including Texas, Georgia, Missouri, Colorado and Arkansas. He would like the opportunity to add you to that list, so give him a call today at (918) 527-8112.

hickory, alder, knotty alder, ash and cherry. Bill noted that knotty alder has recently become his most requested cabinetry material, although those with traditional taste often prefer oak and maple. Because a kitchen or bath

project isn’t complete without beautiful countertops, a huge selection of solid surface, granite, acrylic marble and more is available at Brunson as well. Bill says he has seen the pricing of granite become much more affordable in the past three years,

in-depth view of the comprehensive treatments they provide. One popular program is their weight management program. Dr. Bilbruck and Olga understand that what might work for one person does not work for all people. They note how “no two people have the same requirements for optimal health and body composition. At Results, we believe in a sciencebased approach to weight loss and optimal health.” Dr. Bilbruck mentions a medical condition called Weight Loss Resistance, affecting people who cannot lose one to three pounds

Results Medical Spa offers a variety of health, wellness and beauty treatments from a team of expert professionals.

By Tara Waugh “Every individual deserves to get the very best from their skin and body. You deserve a clinic that is different from other medical spas and skin care clinics.” This is Results Medical Spa’s first statement of their philosophy and mission, which is a testament to the care and service they provide to their clients. Earlier this year, Laura Bilbruck, M.D., and Olga Arnold teamed up and dreamed up the idea for a medical spa like no other in Oklahoma. The two women met through mutual friends, had dinner one night, and knew they were destined to work together and to create a medical spa that, in Dr. Bilbruck’s words, “is dedicated to health, beauty, and wellness and uses evidence-based, scientific procedures that produce reliable and safe results.” Olga Arnold has an extensive medical background and training. She has a master’s of healthcare administration from OSU and an abundance of medical knowledge from practicing obstetrics in Russia and working in the dermatology department at OU. Since 2006, Olga has been gaining even more experience by working at other

medical spas in Tulsa. Dr. Laura Bilbruck also has a comprehensive medical background. In 1996, she received her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma’s College of Medicine. She specializes in internal medicine, which has allowed her to gain an understanding of the fundamental building blocks to human wellness and overall good health. Dr. Bilbruck commented on what sets their medical spa apart from other spas in the area, stating: “We have a bigger toolbox to pull from. We understand the chemistry, and we have our clients’ best interests in mind.” She also notes how both she and Olga have travelled around the country to keep up with the latest technology and information to provide their clients with the best doctor-supervised treatment in Oklahoma. Providing an array of beauty and health treatments, Results is a full service medical and wellness spa. Their services include acne treatment, Botox, celebrity peels, cheek enhancement, chemical peels, lip enhancement, liquid face lifts, migraine treatment, Obaji Blue

peel, weight management, and various treatments for dark circles, deep wrinkles and folds, skin tags, and excessive sweating. Visit their website at www.resultsmed.com to get at an

a week after following a diet 80 percent of the time. This condition can be diagnosed and treated. After individualized, genetic testing, Dr. Bilbruck can help repair a client’s metabolism by devising the proper individualized weight loss plan for each client and providing one-on-one diet coaching. Another sought-after treatment is the liquid face lift. For those who might not want to combat wrinkles and sagging skin with surgery, they can come to Results Medical Spa to receive this unique, more cost-effective alternative. “This procedure is done in just two sessions of less than one hour each, and after each session, you will be able to resume normal activities almost immediately,” says Olga. Liquid face lifts slow down the aging process, giving clients a beautiful, natural appearance. No matter what beauty and health treatment you are contemplating, Dr. Bilbruck and Olga truly practice and embody their mission and philosophy. They have created a beautiful space for their clients where they can enhance their natural beauty, inside and out.

BBuy in Multiples By Joshua Danker-Dake Tulsa Mothers of Multiples (TMOMs) is a non-profit support group for parents of twins, triplets and more – and on Saturday, September 8, they’re having their big semiannual sale, which is your chance to get all kinds of gently-used baby and children’s items at great prices. If you have or are expecting multiples, TMOMs would love to have you. “We meet once a month to share ideas and support each other,” says Donna Evins, a mother of twins and one of TMOMs’ vice presidents. “We offer help for people who are pregnant with twins or who have newborns. Whatever a young mom may be going through, odds are that someone in the group has gone through the same thing.” Evins became involved with TMOMS in just such a way. “I learned about Mothers of Multiples from a friend of mine who had triplets,” she says. “When I got pregnant with twins, I wanted to get involved. I wanted advice from people who had been there, and I got a lot of good suggestions. It was great because it was the one place I

could walk in where everybody understood my life. It’s so great to have that network of other moms – having two kids at once with the same needs is fun and nerve-wracking, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The support and help I received in

equipment, nursery bedding, home items, and, of course, baby, children’s, and adult clothing,” Evins says. “And we check all the items carefully beforehand to make sure they’re in good shape.” TMOMs is involved with the community in many ways, and the sale is TMOMs’ biggest fundraiser of the year. “At Christmas time, we adopt several families, including some families from outside the group. We’ve donated Gatorade to support our firemen. A lot of our moms are involved with March of Dimes, and we are partnering with Emergency Infant Services for the sale. We try to help each other in the group, but also to help others,” Evins says. The semi-annual TMOMs sale is Saturday, September 8 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rivergate Church (formerly Open Bible Fellowship, 1439 E. 71st St.). Admission is free. Only cash is accepted. Physical donations and cash for Emergency Infant Services will also be accepted. “We have a lot of moms selling a lot of things,” says Evins. “Come early – the best stuff goes fast.” For more information on the sale or the Tulsa Mothers of Multiples group, visit www.tulsamoms.org.

a lot of fun things,” says Evins. Breanna Grove, a mother of twins, adds, “Often, twins or triplets spend time in the NICU, and so we’ll try to help people who are in the hospital by providing meals and in other ways.” On Saturday, September 8, TMOMs will host its semiannual sale at Rivergate Church (1439 E. 71st St.). Between volunteering and offering items for sale, over 100 TMOMs families participate. “We have this sale twice a year, and the moms in our group sell items of all kinds, including Halloween costumes, Christmas items, toys, strollers, Pack ’n Plays, highchairs, baby

Laura Sanders of Surceé Home Décor & Gifts has been wishing for more room in her Owasso store and this month, her wish is coming true. “The space to the south of us became available and provided the perfect opportunity for us to expand. We will be able to offer more of everything you love, with the same helpful Surceé girls who have been here from the start.” Surceé is known for its beautiful interior, with charming vignettes throughout the store to inspire the interior designer in you. Laura’s mother, Sue Hatfield, has an exceptional gift for decorating and like every year, the store will close for a few days prior to the Fall Open House so that she can work her magic, totally transforming the store and incorporating all the latest merchandise for Halloween and fall. “It’s like an early Christmas for us each time the delivery trucks pull in – we start pulling things out of boxes and getting so excited,” laughed staff member Cathy Haney. The additional space will double the size of the store and the timing couldn’t be better, as the Fall Open House is just

Fundraising Event for Claremore Boy with FOP ZipperQ is a fundraising event being held at The Nut House on October 6 to raise money for Zip Gordon, a young boy battling a rare genetic disorder.

By Cheena Pazzo The Gordon family is working hard to raise awareness for their son, who is battling a rare genetic disorder called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), or “Stone Man Disease.” Zip was diagnosed with FOP in July of 2011 at age 4. Friends and family are auctioning a truck and holding a barbecue event and auction in his honor to raise money for

FOP research. FOP is one of the rarest, most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine, affecting one in two million, with only 700 confirmed cases worldwide. It causes the bone to attack muscle, turning muscle into bone and potentially enclosing the patient in a second skeleton. ZipperQ will be held October 6, 2012 at The Nut House on historic Route 66 in

One lucky ticketholder will win this 2012 Dodge 1500 truck at the ZipperQ fundraiser.

Claremore to raise money to find a cure. All proceeds will go directly to the IFOPA and FOP research. At the event, Zip will draw the winning ticket for a 2012 Dodge 1500. The $25 tickets are available for purchase now on ZipperQ.com. In addition, teams can sign up online to participate in the barbecue competition. "We are honored to have support across the state for Zip's cause," said Amy Gordon, Zip's mother. "Thanks to the many generous donations, there will be something to suit everyone's interest, from art and music to sports and hunting." The live and silent auctions will include an original painting by famous Oklahoma artist Patrick Gordon, autographed memorabilia from Wayne Coyne – frontman for The Flaming Lips, tickets to the OU/Texas game, and a two-day duck and pheasant hunt by the nationally televised and professional guide Brady Walker. "The disease is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time. We need a cure as quickly as possible to avoid additional long-term damage," Amy added.

Arlie and Zip Gordon. "Flare-ups can occur spontaneously or following bodily trauma, such as childhood immunizations, falls while playing and viral illnesses." According to the IFOPA, the information obtained from studying this disease will have far-reaching implications for the treatment of common disorders such as fractures, osteoporosis, hip replacement surgery, and

other forms of heterotopic ossification that occur in trauma and burn victims. More information about FOP is available at www.ifopa.org. For more information, contact

Clothes Make the Woman

Dress for Success Tulsa will host its annual Fashion Show and Auction September 14, 2012 at Greenwood Cultural Center.

By Tara Waugh Who wouldn’t want an evening filled with fashion, food and fun which also supports an amazing organization that assists disadvantaged women in the Tulsa area? Dress for Success Tulsa is holding its annual “Step Up to Success” Fashion Show and Auction on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Greenwood Cultural Center, 322 N. Greenwood. The enchanting evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a social hour where food and drinks can be enjoyed, and auction items can be gazed and bid upon. At 7:30 p.m., guests will be formally welcomed and will hear from a testimonial speaker attesting to the support and transformation that Dress for Success Tulsa gives to its clients. Next, the emcee of the evening, Fox 23 News Anchor Chera Kimiko, will begin the fashion show where models sport the latest fashions, accessories and cosmetics from Dillard’s in Woodland Hills Mall and have their hair styled from Ihloff Salon. The models are executive men and women from Tulsa-area businesses and include Katherine Anderson, Cancer Treatment Centers of America; Cheryl Chinowth, Chinowth & Cohen Realtors; Jim Boucher, TBT Consulting, LLC; Greg Johnson, Samson; Sean Kouplen, Regent

The women behind the success: Ronda Adkisson, executive director, and Pat Simmons, board president. Bank; David Pennington, Magellan Midstream Partners; Cassie Reese, Crossland Construction Company; and Ingrid Sadler, State Farm Insurance. After the first round of fashion will be a live auction hosted by Greg Simmons from Simmons Homes. Live and silent auction items include a variety of items

such as trips to favorite destinations and packages representing Tulsa-area spas, golf courses, sports and entertainment, hotels and restaurants, and much, much more. Following the live auction, the fashion show continues, focusing on cocktail and evening attire, which ends the night on an elegant note. Throughout the night, guests can enjoy a plethora

of cocktails and delicious dishes provided by Chef Mark Michalski and Tulsa-area restaurants. To support this extraordinary organization and contribute to one of its most important fundraisers of the year, patrons can get tax-deductible table sponsorships available at $1,200 for premier seating and $1,000 levels. Individual tickets are $75 per person. Dress for Success Tulsa is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional business attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help them thrive in work and in life, free of charge. When a client is referred, usually by an array of nonprofit organizations, government agencies, shelters, colleges and technical institutes, she receives one suit for her first job interview and is eligible for additional clothing when she secures employment to help her build a professional wardrobe. When asked what Dress for Success Tulsa does for women, Pat Simmons, president of the board, emphatically said, “A professional outfit can literally transform a person, inside and out. Most women enter these doors without much confidence, but once they spend some time with our personal shoppers and find the perfect suit, handbag, shoes and accessories, a transformation takes place. It is an emotional experience. We get a lot of smiles and hugs.” What is also unique about the organization is that not only

Page 27

does it support women by giving them professional clothing, but it also empowers their clients by providing career services. They offer pre- and post- employment courses to support their clients. Serving thousands of women in the Tulsa and surrounding communities, Dress for Success Tulsa is an empowering organization that still needs your support to continue to help clients. Not only can you attend the annual Fashion Show and Auction on September 14, but you can donate new and gentlyused clothing to either their store at 1109 S. Peoria or Dressbarn located at Tulsa Hills, which accepts donations on their behalf Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Executive Director Ronda Adkisson also mentions, “We are always in need of plus-size professional clothing and shoe sizes 9 and larger. These tend to continually be some of our greatest needs.” If you are interested in donating auction items, food or florals for the event, or want additional information regarding Dress for Success Tulsa, please contact Ronda Adkisson at (918) 599-8892 or email her at Tulsa@dressforsuccess.org.

Families Save and Earn at JBF entire season’s worth of items in one stop without spending a ton of cash. “This helps families not only eat better, they live better because JBF helps put some expendable income back in the family budget because of the great savings that can be found at a JBF sales event,” Leffingwell said. Typically shoppers can save 50 to 90 percent off clothes and equipment, compared to retail prices. Items available include gently-used children’s, junior’s and maternity clothing in addition to baby equipment, household furniture, software, videos, toys and much more. “Moms,

dads and grandparents can get quality items for their children at amazingly low prices and still be able to buy the groceries for that month," Leffingwell said. Amber Post, franchisee of Southwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before she started organizing her own JBF events. "We were young college students, broke and on a tight budget," Post said. She had a six-monthold daughter the first time she shopped at a JBF and even then, she was a slave to fashion. Before, Post had to rely on her mom and grandma to buy the really cute things. "I could only afford to buy her the basics and shop the

clearance racks, but once I discovered JBF, it was like a dream come true," she said. Suddenly Post could buy everything she wanted for her and not jeopardize her family's budget. After shopping once, she decided to consign and received a check for $75 from items she sold, and she was hooked. It was so easy to do, and a sales event has so much to offer in terms of clothes, shoes, toys, books and more for the upcoming season. Daven Tackett, owner of Just Between Friends Tulsa and cofounder of JBF, is most pleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buy children's clothes

at great savings. Moms and dads can feel good about letting their children wear and play with the items purchased. "My mother was divorced and disabled, trying to raise three girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things to make ends meet, including buying some of our clothes from resale and going to garage sales," Tackett said. "As kids, we didn't know there was any other way to buy clothes. We were just always excited and happy about getting something new to wear." Families across the nation are realizing shopping resale/consignment makes sense. Just Between

Services include everything from hearing testing to helping patients select a hearing aid with the features that best fit their lifestyles. Advantage Audiology helps get you “back in the conversation” and connected with friends and family. Dr. Gene’s background includes research and clinical audiology, and he has worked with deaf and hearing impaired children. In 2000, he opened Advantage Audiology, where he is known for his outstanding patient dedication. Hearing Instrument Specialist Jeff King has over 14 years of experience and says, “I love helping people improve their hearing. I base my success on the successes I have in correcting our patients’ hearing losses.” “Most hearing problems are caused by damage to the nerve cells,” says Dr. Gene. This type of hearing problem is commonly

called “nerve deafness.” The most common causes are exposure to noise and the aging process. When the inner ear or auditory nerve is damaged, a weak, distorted and incomplete message is sent to the brain and understanding becomes difficult, if not impossible. Although nerve deafness cannot be medically cured, it can be helped or treated with hearing aids. All hearing aid products recommended by Advantage Audiology operate digitally. One popular product is the NuEar Look TM, which receives television, radio, stereo, and virtually any sound source directly to your hearing aid – wirelessly. NuEar products are designed for vibrant lifestyles and provide optimum flexibility and performance in a broad range of demanding listening environments that include high levels of background noise. The first signs of hearing loss are often subtle. Do you have to

Gleam Guard eliminates the huge mess and time of remodeling – and most jobs take only one to two days to complete. “We refinish all interior woodwork, painted or stained, and the finish will last for decades,” says Bill. “If you walk into a kitchen that Gleam Guard did 24 years ago when owner Tracy Booth first began the company, you’d be absolutely amazed at how good it still looks.” Customers receive a five-year touchup warranty, which is transferrable to new owners. “This is a great selling point for people who are putting their home on the market,” adds Bill. “When the cabinets in a home look pristine, the value and salability of the house really increases.” The reasonable cost is another great perk. According to Bill, the sandless refinishing process of

Get Like-New Cabinets the same time, you don’t want to make the mistake of spending tons of money to remodel or replace important aesthetic and functional items like cabinetry. Bill Kleinhans, regional manager of Tulsa, says that Gleam Guard is a perfect solution for those trying to sell their home, as well as anyone else who simply wants to spruce up their interior in a big way – without spending a lot of money, time or effort. The Gleam Guard process refinishes kitchen and bath cabinets and any other interior woodwork without sanding, dust, or mess. “People cannot believe there is no preparation involved,” says Bill. “They don’t have to move a thing out of their cabinets.” Professional craftsmen will clean the cabinets, and the Gleam Guard process will correct peels, flakes, scratches, minor nicks and imperfections. Once the Gleam Guard hard finish is applied, like

continued from page 1 Gleam Guard costs about a third of traditional refinishing. Besides kitchen and bath cabinets, Gleam Guard can also be applied to doorframes, woodwork, paneling, baseboards and all wood trims that are painted, pickled or stained. Customers can choose a range of glosses, from a satin finish to high gloss. “We are infinitely adjustable on the type of gloss a customer wants,” says Bill. The special Gleam Guard formula bonds to the original finish, enhances the wood grain and gives it a fresh oiled look that will never again need traditional polishing. All cleaning and finishing products used in the process are eco-friendly, and so is maintenance. Bill explains that for cleaning, dipping a cloth in warm water should do the job, but if more cleaning power is needed, add some white vinegar to the water.

“If you’re doing a kitchen remodel, give us a call first. We can discuss the best time to schedule the refinishing part of the project,” Bill says. “And if anyone is thinking of replacing kitchen or bathroom cabinets, please give us a call first. Gleam Guard will be a less expensive alternative, with no dust or disruption.” Gleam Guard offers in-home price quotes, and their kiosk at Woodland Halls Mall displays samples of their amazing work.

SStep Up To the Plate Tulsa’s 6th annual Restaurant Week Sept. 8-16 will benefit the Food Bank. By Sheryl Sowell In conjunction with September’s national Hunger Action Month, northeast Oklahoma restaurants are stepping up to the plate to fight hunger in our community by participating in Tulsa’s 6th annual Restaurant Week, Sept. 8-16. Thirty-four restaurants will offer three-course, prix fixe meals

and donate 10 percent of Restaurant Week menu proceeds to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s Food for Kids program. Restaurant Week proceeds will be matched by the George Kaiser Family Foundation up to $25,000. This year, Restaurant Week patrons can select from a variety

PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS

A list of participating restaurants along with their Restaurant Week menus and contact information will be available on the new TulsaPeople iPad/iPhone app beginning Sept. 1. The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple iTunes store. “We’re excited to see new additions and some returning favorites to the list of participating restaurants,” said Regina Pickens, community events coordinator at the Food Bank. “It’s amazing to see how our community steps up to the plate when our kids are in need.” The event’s presenting sponsor is TulsaPeople magazine. Additional sponsors include the George Kaiser Family Foundation, News on 6, Jarboe and Waller & Company Public Relations. “We are so pleased this event continues to grow each year and is so well-received in the community,” said Jim Langdon, publisher of TulsaPeople. “Restaurant Week is a great time for Tulsans to try a new restaurant or an old favorite for a great price and cause.” For more information about Restaurant Week and its special prix fixe menus, visit TulsaPeople.com, the Tulsa Restaurant Week Facebook page or download the TulsaPeople iPad/iPhone app.

of three-course lunch and dinner menus designed to suit any taste and budget. Restaurants will offer three different lunch menus at $12.95 per person and three different dinner menus at one of three varying price points. The three price points for dinner menus are either $25 per person, $35 per person or $35 for two. Each meal will feature an appetizer, entrée and dessert, and all prices exclude tax, gratuity and beverage. The Food Bank’s Food for Kids program provides a backpack of food each week during the school year to more than 4,100 students in Tulsa County at risk of going hungry during the weekend and holidays. Last year, Restaurant Week raised more than $50,000 for the Food for Kids program. “We’re excited so many of our restaurants are able to participate in Restaurant Week again this year,” said Amanda Williams, marketing and communications manager for the McNellie’s Group. “It’s a testament to Tulsa that so many great organizations can join forces to support the Food Bank and its programs. We’re proud to be part of that again this year.”

YYour Surgeon Can Make the Difference Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experiences with two surgeons. By Joshua Danker-Dake When Patsy Wessel, 72, of Oilton, Oklahoma, had knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti this past March, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The difference in the two procedures, she says, was like night and day. “I had already had one surgery done, and it was very painful,” Wessel says. “I didn’t have a good experience with my first doctor, and I didn’t feel like my physical therapist did a very good job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good experience with him.” Wessel’s knee problems developed gradually, over decades, she says. “I’m 72 years old, and I’m in my 34th year in my job, where I walk and stand on cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cement floors. I’ve worked hard in my life, you know? You just wear your knees out.” Wessel says the knee replacement with Dr. LaButti

was an immeasurably better experience than her previous surgery. “Yes, I had pain – it’s always painful. But for a knee replacement, it was significantly better,” she says. “I had much less pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told me that the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, I was able to get up and walk without so much pain because of how well it was done. I wasn’t even on my cane or walker more than a week before I could walk by myself.” A big part of Wessel’s good experience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passive motion machine for physical therapy, and Wessel says it worked wonders. “Dr. LaButti sent me home with this machine: for two hours, three times a day, you put your leg in it, and it raises and works your knee. It worked wonderfully, and it doesn’t hurt.” Wessel says her first doctor

didn’t use that machine. “He had someone physically doing it, and they can hurt you. Sometimes I was crying by the time they finished. But with the machine, it didn’t hurt, and it kept the knee limber. It worked so well.” Overall, Wessel says, her experience was exceptional. “The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, and he was very nice. I’ve already recommended Dr. LaButti to a number of people, and I would recommend him to anyone.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. iBlock®

Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti

This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

AAn Evening of Wine & Roses The 18th annual event hosted by Tulsa Garden Center is scheduled for September 28, 2012 and will feature over 150 different wines and more than 35 local restaurants. By Sheryl Sowell Memorable wines, romantic moonlight and the heady fragrance of roses all combine to create a magical experience at Tulsa Garden Center’s 18th annual An Evening of Wine & Roses. This year’s event will be held September 28 from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden. An Evening of Wine & Roses is one of the region’s largest wine tasting events. Guests will enjoy over 150 different wines from around the world complemented by elegant hors d’oeuvres and desserts from more than 35 of Tulsa’s top restaurants and caterers. The combination of delectable food and exquisite wine enjoyed under the stars, while strolling through a garden full of gorgeous fragrant roses, makes this an enchanting autumn evening. Tickets for An Evening of Wine & Roses are $65 for Tulsa Garden Center members and $80 for non-members. Prior to the main event, a private Sponsor Tasting will be held in the Tulsa Garden Center Mansion from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sponsors will savor exceptional wines from premium vintners

and delicious fare from Tulsa’s top chefs. Individual sponsor level tickets are $130 or 10 tickets for $1,100. A private table for 10 guests can be reserved for $1,600. The main event begins at 7 p.m. in the beautiful Municipal Rose Garden, which is included in the

cost of the sponsor tickets. Please call the Tulsa Garden Center for additional information on sponsor opportunities and benefits. According to Barbie Raney, Tulsa Garden Center director, this is a wonderful social event where it’s difficult not to run

into someone you know. “It’s a beautiful night in the garden under the stars where you taste delicious wine and food, interact with friends and strangers alike, and have a fantastic time!” The atmosphere will be highlighted with music sponsored by Mix 96. Each year, Moody’s Jewelry donates a piece of jewelry to the event. Guests may purchase a rose for $25 and will receive the chance to win a pair of diamond stud earrings. A fun new addition this year is a photo booth with a variety of props, so guests may take home a cute party favor. An Evening of Wine & Roses will culminate in a fireworks display at the close of the event. Mike Blake, education and marketing manager for the Tulsa Garden Center, explains that this event is the economic engine that fuels the Tulsa Garden Center’s activities, including operation of the free Linnaeus Teaching Garden, which is run solely by volunteers; ongoing classes for adults and children; and the “Brown Bag” lecture series. The Tulsa Garden Center is able to offer these educational opportunities at little or no cost

through fundraisers such as An Evening of Wine & Roses. Mike adds that An Evening of Wine & Roses is the perfect opportunity to learn about wine. “With so many types of wine available, you can’t find a better place to learn. The vintners are always happy to talk to guests and answer any questions they have.” Many volunteers and sponsors work hard to make this spectacular event a success each year. “TES is the lighting sponsor that creates stunning ambiance in the garden, and the City of Tulsa Parks Department does an incredible job of manicuring the garden to pristine condition,” says Mike. “We also greatly appreciate all of our volunteers and winery and restaurant participants.” Reservations are required for this popular event, and space is limited. Reservation deadline is September 21, so call soon! Attendees must be 21 years or older. Proof of age is required. Proceeds from An Evening of Wine & Roses benefit Tulsa Garden Center.
