Health speaks volumes. Do you want to be an individual who is riddled with chronic disease, aches and pains and debilitating illness, or would you rather have the vim and vigor of a 30-year-old in your 50s, 60s and beyond? If you answered yes to the second half of the question, perhaps you should make your way to the Functional Medical Institute. Dr. Michele Neil, Internal Medicine, Sports Medicine Physician, has created a pathway to wellness by changing lifestyle from the ground up. We know that lifestyle plays an astro-

nomical role in our long-term wellbeing. Don’t take your health for granted by being uneducated and a victim of the “Standard American Diet.” Take charge and rise to the top of the food chain in vitality, energy and wellbeing. Dr. Neil works with patients with all types of imbalance. Most imbalance has its root in how we live our daily lives. The gasoline we put in the engine of our human motor vehicle is responsible for the type of mileage we get. “All chronic conditions begin with inflammation,” she explains. Inflammation is set in motion

when the internal organs and the immune system are compromised by being met with the day-in, dayout challenge of polluted nutrition. This chronic pollution leads to chronic debility and includes signs such as joint aches and pain, brain fogginess, delayed recovery time, depression, headaches, weight gain and more. These are all signs that one’s metabolic status may need medical attention. The typical SAD – Standard American Diet, loaded with sugar, processed, packaged junk, trans (continued on page 26)

Most folks think that the only way they can take control of their 401k is after they change jobs or retire. However, many 401k and profit-sharing plans allow for what is called an in-service rollover. In-service rollovers are often poorly understood by both plan sponsors and participants. I have folks call me often with lots of questions and confusion regarding this little hidden rollover opportunity. In this column I’ll hit the highlights about how an inservice rollover works. Then I’ll talk about some of the pros and cons of doing an in-service rollover. How an In-Service Rollover Works An in-service rollover is a non-hardship withdrawal, and there is no need to prove anything in order to take it. However, an employer-sponsored retirement plan is not required to allow for in-service withdrawals and can restrict the withdrawal amounts. An in-service rollover means that the distribution is directly rolled into an IRA. Therefore, the money is not subject to ordinary income tax nor a 10% federal tax penalty if taken before age 59 ½. In addition, there may be restrictions on which assets within the retirement plan are available for withdrawal, and the employer sponsoring the plan may have other rules concerning employee’s length of participation and how long the assets have to be held prior to withdrawal.

www.ValueNews.com

Disadvantages of In-Service Rollovers

Advantages of the In-Service Rollover

There are several advantages to requesting an in-service rollover distribution. The first advantage is having access to a wider array of investments. CDs, stocks, bonds, and other investment options can be used inside of an IRA. By moving your assets out of your employer sponsored plan, you have access to all of these options and are not limited to whatever the plan has to offer. The second advantage is having a professional advisor to help you navigate your investment options. We sit down with our clients face to face twice a year to discuss their individual retirement needs. When our clients call us….they get a real person, not a call tree. Your advisor should also be able to help you develop a plan for how you will use these assets, while in retirement, to replace your employment income. An IRA allows access to more distribution options and is not being subject to the 20% mandatory tax withholding on distributions.

The disadvantages of in-service rollovers include a potential loss of the following: exception to 10% penalty if separated from service after attainment of age 55 and older. If an employee has attained age 55 and older, and then separates from service, they can take distributions for employer-sponsored plans that will not be subject to the 10% early distribution penalty. With IRAs, this option is not available. Most employer-sponsored plans offer a loan feature. Loans from an IRA are not allowed. With an employee sponsored plan, you may have the ability to delay required minimum distributions (RMDs) beyond age 70 ½ if you are still working. Lastly, tax advantages using net unrealized appreciation (NUA) strategy are not available for non-hardship in-service withdrawals. Careful consideration is needed to determine if this strategy is right for you. Give us a call to receive your free report on IRA Rollovers from Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plans. TThe Rock Celebrates Seven Years “The Rock Church is still loving people and serving God,” says Pastor Billy Joe Watts. By Duane Blankenship

Pastor Billy Joe Watts and The Rock Church celebrate seven years of reaching out to others this September.

“We’re continuing to love people and serve God,” says Pastor Billy Joe Watts of The Rock Church in Tulsa. The Rock opened doors with an outreach ministry in 2007 under the leadership of Pastors Billy Joe and Theresa Watts. They make it a point to extend their reaching out to others by offering numerous opportunities for self improvement. “We’re still working on our 10 point Master Plan that we established in the beginning,” says Pastor Billy Joe. The plan includes developing a multi-racial, multi-cultural, word-based ministry; a multi-complex center to facilitate all activities of church and ministry; a complex for Christian education and professional training; a gym and fitness center for training and wellness to promote good health; a radio and television ministry; a plan for sending missionaries into the world; a communications skills program; a music school for community kids; affordable housing opportunities for community members; and an outreach center to provide food and clothing to the poor. On September 21, The Rock Church will host a seven-year

anniversary celebration featuring guest speaker Pastor Sarah Utterbach of Nanuet, New York. Pastor Sarah and her late husband, Clinton, attended Rhema Bible Training Center. From the beginning, Pastors Billy Joe and Theresa have been helping homeowners by offering free Home Buyers Seminars and making opportunities for firsttime buyers and investors. The next Home Buyers Seminar is scheduled for August 14 at 6:30 p.m. at The Rock Church office at 2017 S. Elm Place in Broken Arrow. Pastor Billy Joe says they enjoy offering assistance and answering questions about estate planning and personal budgeting. “We partner with Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University,” says Billy Joe, “and this program changes lives.” Financial Peace University teaches God’s ways of handling money through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities. It presents Biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you’ve dreamed you could be. The plan shows you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more. A nine-week Financial

Peace University presentation is being scheduled for this fall through The Rock Church. “We’ve added a new member to our team who will serve by enhancing The Rock’s children’s programming,” says Pastor Theresa. Jackie Burns comes to The Rock from Las Vegas and previously ran an orphanage in the Philippines. The Watts met Jackie at the Rhema Bible Training Center, where Jackie graduated in 1996. She loves children,” says Theresa, “and is a great addition to The Rock.” “Come worship with us or participate in any of our educational opportunities,” says Pastor Billy Joe. Contact the Rock by phone or visit the website for more information about worship services or programs.

Steak Cook-Off Beefed up for 2014 Nearly 4,000 steaks will be prepared in downtown Tulsa August 22-23. Proceeds will benefit TYPros’ community partner, the Tulsa Zoo.

By Sheryl Sowell

Tulsa’s Young Professionals is partnering with the Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off to bring the Steak Cookoff Association’s U.S. Steak Championship to downtown Tulsa in a two-day steak, music and beer festival benefitting TYPros’ 2014 community partner, the Tulsa Zoo. The Aug. 22-23 festival, which also includes the sixth annual Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off, will summon the top steak cooks to compete in teams for the state and national championships. The event will feature Oklahoma’s largest steak dinner, live music, beer, a car show and numerous children’s activities in an area centered on Sixth Street and Cincinnati Avenue. “We are thrilled to join forces with one of the nation’s largest young professional organizations to bring one of the nation’s largest celebrations of steak to the heart of Tulsa,” said Tripp Haggard, executive director of the Oklahoma Championship Steak

Cook-Off. “The state cook-off has brought thousands of steak lovers to downtown Tulsa for years. With the addition of the national

championship and top chefs from around the country, needless to say, we’ve beefed up the competition.” About 30 teams will cook steaks cut fresh on site for a chance to win the national championship Friday, Aug. 22, and about 70 teams will compete Saturday for the state championship. In all, nearly 4,000 steaks – about two tons – will be cooked. For the general public, $20 admission includes steak

and side dishes. The festival will include outdoor performances by a dozen bands headlined by Desert Noises

www.ValueNews.com and Alaska and Madi, a car and bike show on Boston Avenue and vendors. In addition, beer and food trucks will be on hand Friday evening, while family-friendly activities – including a kids’ zone – will round out Saturday’s festivities. More information about activities and advanced ticket sales can be found at www. oksteakcookoff.com. Event organizers will donate 70 percent of their proceeds to the Tulsa Zoo as part of the TYPros Community Partner program, which raises money for a different nonprofit organization each year. TYPros selected the zoo this year with the goal of helping it implement its new master plan. With thousands of people expected to attend the festival, proceeds for the zoo could top $30,000, organizers said. That would make it the largest single fundraiser in the five-year history of TYPros’ Community Partner program. “We’ve been helping nonprofit organizations realize their dreams for five years through our Community Partner program, but this festival takes it to another level,” TYPros Executive Director Shagah Zakerion said. “With help from our fellow Tulsans, we believe this event can make meaningful progress toward the Tulsa Zoo’s dream of becoming a world-class attraction. We thank the Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off for joining us in this worthy cause.” Terrie Correll, CEO of Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc., said:

“Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc., is grateful to our community partner, TYPros, and to all of the sponsors, organizers and supporters of the cook-off. All funds raised for the zoo will benefit Building Beyond Your Wildest Dreams, our capital campaign to complete our Lost Kingdom Exhibit Complex, which will include the Helmerich Tiger Exhibit, Hardesty Snow Leopard Habitat, Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation Red Panda/Binturong Exhibit and Aviary, and The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation Outdoor Siamang Habitat.” The Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off will also donate 30 percent of the proceeds to its community Garden Project. Tulsa’s Young Professionals, one of the nation’s largest young professional organizations, is division of the Tulsa Regional Chamber and a volunteer-based free membership organization for working and creative adults under the age of 40. Its mission is to attract and retain young talent in the Tulsa region while establishing Tulsa’s next generation of business and community leaders.

Stopping Predators, Restoring Lives The Demand Project directs efforts, resources and energy toward the eradication of sexual exploitation of children.

By Duane Blankenship In 2004, Jason and Kristin Weis were living in “the perfect world” when a headline story gripped their hearts and changed their lives. The horrific report, unfortunately, tells the story of too many children in our country. A father had raped his threeyear-old daughter, videotaped his brutal crime and downloaded it onto the Internet. The devastating act attracted thousands of people who logged on to watch. At that monumental moment, Jason and Kristin asked, “How can we continue our safe life when so many children are living this type torture?” They then dedicated their lives to eradicating child sexual exploitation and received training to fight a battle for freedom for sexually abused children. Jason and Kristin co-founded The Demand Project with a mission to direct efforts, resources and energy toward eradicating sexual exploitation of children. Whether victims of trafficking, forced prostitution, online enticement, or child pornography, their mission is to end all sex crimes by targeting the demand (predator) side of sexual exploitation.

The couple’s organization works with, and in support of, ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children), a federal program under the jurisdiction of the OSBI. They work with OBN (Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics) by providing financial support and manpower. They support the Tulsa Police Department and have provided them with a high-definition camera and microphone to use when performing on-site interviews. The Demand Project assists Homeland Security by working to investigate and prosecute online predator and human trafficking cases. The four principle areas under which The Demand Project concentrates are prevention, prosecution, rescue and restoration. Prevention: to be in readiness. The Demand Project educates, equips and empowers the community on how to stay safe against child predators seeking to harm children. They do so by providing in-depth presentations, giving insights on how predators operate, how to keep our children safe online, and how to stay educated on technological trends. Prosecution: the process of

pursuing formal charges against an offender to final judgment. The Demand Project supports efforts of law enforcement’s key role in stopping child predators, protecting children and rescuing victims. “We have strategic relationships with law enforcement agencies that target child predators and individuals who commercially traffick people against their will,” says Jason. Rescue: to free from confinement, danger or evil. The Demand Project has built relationships between VAST (Victim Advocate Support Teams) and key law enforcement agents across Oklahoma to assist in the rescue of trafficked victims. Restoration: to bring back into existence. “Rescuing a victim from sexual exploitation is only the beginning of an extensive process for a victim to become a survivor,” said Kristin. “Donated community resources are imperative to successful survivor recovery once they transition out of a shelter and reintegrate into the community. We educate, find transitional housing, and teach victims a trade.” If you are interested in becoming a supporter of The Demand

$ Did you realize that nearly half the energy used at home is consumed by your heating and air conditioning system? Now imagine how hard your system is working to keep you comfortable if the coils or air ducts are dirty. Properly maintaining your heating and air conditioning system with routine maintenance can increase efficiency while decreasing your energy bills. There are many ways to “go green” at home, but one of the simplest and most costeffective ways is with a tune-up. After you’ve taken the appropriate steps by having a tune-up, once in the spring and once in the fall, you can take additional steps to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly home with a few energy saving solutions.

Follow these suggestions from Aire Serv to create a more “green”, energy efficient home: • Install a programmable thermostat that adjusts the temperature when home or away. Why keep your house cool/warm when nobody is home? • Use high efficiency air filters to help your air conditioning system stay clean longer. • Plant trees or shrubs to shade the air conditioning unit, but not so close that they block air flow. • Have your professional air conditioning provider clean your unit’s coils regularly - about every six months – to prevent dirt and dust build-up. • Check the attic, crawl space or basement to make sure it’s properly insulated.

• If installing a new unit, look for a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) number on air conditioners. Some units manufactured about 10 years ago were in the 10 SEER range while many units today are in the 20 SEER range. Going from a 10 to 20 SEER will cut your cooling costs in half. • If installing a new HVAC unit, consider donation or recycling. A unit in working order can be donated and non-functioning pieces can be picked up by your municipal solid waste agency or Steel Recycling Institute. Go to recyclesteel.org or visit earth911.org for more local options. In an effort to encourage sustainable products, another change you need to be aware of is the phase out of R-22, the refrigerant most commonly used in

Ask us about

today’s heating and cooling units. Beginning January 2010, all new units are required to use “environmentally sound” refrigerant, such as R-410A. The phase out has been mandated by the government in an effort to help protect the Earth’s ozone layer. By switching to the more economically and environmentally friendly R-410A, you can also protect yourself from the potentially higher costs of servicing an air conditioner or heating unit that uses R-22. Remember, finding energy solutions at home doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your comfort. You can save money while being “green” and stay comfortable. For more information on the refrigerant change or on how you can save money on your next energy bill, contact your local Aire Serv Professional Randy Raper.

Draper Family GNC was started in 1999 by Greg Draper. Winn said the company has grown to 13 franchise locations in Oklahoma, with two more stores to open in the near future. Draper’s daughter Crystal is general manager of the chain. Draper Family GNC is a franchisee of the General Nutrition Corporation. “We are a GNC so we carry all the products a corporate GNC would carry, as well as products that are exclusive to us as a franchise or family operated GNC. One of those lines is called NDS, which is the maker of our very popular Flex Stack and Embrace Elite muscle building and weight loss lines,” said Winn. Winn said whether you want to lose weight or just improve your overall fitness, he and his dedicated staff invite you to be a part of the Draper Family GNC experience.

Opening of New Retail Store

11 retail locations are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Goodwill Industries of Tulsa no longer sells furniture in any of their retail stores. Furniture may be purchased at the Goodwill Auction, located at the north end of the parking lot at 2800 Southwest Blvd. The Auc-

furniture can be dropped off for donation. Goodwill Industries of Tulsa is a non-profit agency that provides work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment. The revenue from the sale of donated goods helps to fund Goodwill’s training programs and services.

Goodwill’s Southwest Boulevard retail store moves to brand new facility. By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrated the grand opening of its new “Route 66” Southwest Boulevard retail store in early July. The new store is located at 3110 Southwest Blvd., just south of Goodwill’s offices and former retail store. Goodwill President David Oliver provided a historical perspective of how Goodwill arrived at this point. In 2002, Goodwill completed an expansion of the existing headquarters facility at 2800 Southwest Blvd. and felt it would be enough space to accommodate the organization well into the future. “But, thanks to the foresight and strategic planning of an outstanding board of directors, and the unwavering commitment of Goodwill’s staff to grow our mission, the future came much sooner than expected,” said Oliver.

From 2002 to 2013, Goodwill has experienced exceptional growth. A total of 21 million pounds of donated items was collected and processed last year, an increase of 63 percent; total store sales increased by 160 percent; the total number of individuals served in Goodwill training programs and Job Connection Program increased by 673 percent; the total number of individuals Goodwill assisted in job placement in the community increased by 408 percent; and total wages paid to employees with barriers to employment increased by 160 percent. The new store represents Phase I of Goodwill’s total project. They will be remodeling the space at existing headquarters that was formerly occupied by the retail store. They will also add much needed training rooms for new initiatives such as collaboration with Union Public Schools to offer GED test

preparation classes at Goodwill, plus collaboration with United Way to offer free tax preparation services. They will also expand the space available for processing donations and improving the convenience for donors dropping off items. “The result of our incredible growth,” said Oliver, “was that we needed to expand and had the opportunity to purchase this site located so close to headquarters. By developing this property, Goodwill was able to expand our presence on Route 66.” Store Manager Jaime Monroe is filled with excitement about the new facility. “It’s a beautiful store with an art deco influence throughout, and it’s full of merchandise at incredible Goodwill prices,” she said. “And we are so excited to be partnering with the Tulsa Shock WNBA team for our grand opening celebration.” Regular store hours for all

for a Cure

Bike MS: The Mother Road Ride 2014 is set for September 20-21. By Christopher Davis

The National MS Society educates, inspires and empowers those affected by multiple sclerosis. With an emphasis on mobilizing people and resources to drive research for a cure, the society is one of the largest organizations that advocates on behalf of those affected by the disease. In short, the National MS Society works toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. On September 20 and 21, the society invites everyone to join the cause and participate in Bike MS: The Mother Road Ride 2014, which takes place in Chandler. With local chapters in every state, the society is the largest and most impactful MS-advocate in America. According to the National Health Council, an independent organization that rates charitable entities, the National MS So-

ciety “funds more multiple sclerosis (MS) research and provides more programs for people with MS and their families than any other voluntary health organization in the world.” It is estimated that the society advocates on behalf of more than a third of the million families living with MS. Such an impact, however, can-

not be accomplished by sitting on the couch and talking. The best way to get the word out and raise money for research is to go out in the streets and raise awareness. And what better way to take it to the streets than on a bicycle? Such thinking is what inspired the first event more than 30 years ago. Will Munger, executive director of the Minnesota Chapter of the MS Society, took his 10-yearold son to ride their bikes home to Minneapolis from

known as the MS Bike Tour or MS 150) from Minneapolis to Duluth, raising $33,000 for the Minnesota Chapter. In 1981, other National MS Society chapters around the country began holding their own Bike MS rides when they heard of the success in Minnesota. By 1985, the society had adopted the ride as an “official” event to be held in every chapter. Today, Bike MS is their most successful fundraising campaign and is held in every state. On September 20 and 21, the Oklahoma holds its local event in Chandler. Bike MS: The Mother Road Ride 2014 is presented by Sam’s Club and challenges participants to 150 miles of Oklahoma. Registration is $50 per rider, and the start and finish location is at the Lincoln County Agri-Civic Center, located at 1179 W. 15th St. in Chandler.

Will’s father’s house in Duluth. The two did not make it home in one day and ended up spending the night in a small town about halfway to their destination. When they arrived in Minneapolis the next day, Will figured that if two novice bicyclists like himself and his son could ride 150 miles in two days, it could be a good challenge for others, as well as a fun way to raise funds for the National MS Society. In 1980, 200 cyclists participated in the first Bike MS (formerly

Teach Kids Money Management Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things fi nancial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the fi eld – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quickand easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Jocelyn Wood

When is a good time to begin teaching your kids about money and banking? “The earlier the better,” says Lisa Armendarez, a banker at RCB Bank. Armendarez admits even though she’s a banker, she’s learned a lesson or two from preparing her oldest child for life away from home. I sat down with Armendarez, and her two children, Amanda, 22, in college, and Aaron, 17, a senior in high school, to talk about money and their experiences. Lisa, how did you prepare your oldest for handling her own finances after she left home? Lisa: I got her a debit card early, when she was 16. I had control and put small amounts of money on it at a time. As she gained experience, I’d put more on it. When she got a job at 17, I handed it over to her to keep up with, balance and put money in. I also made her sit down with me on the 1st and 15th of each month to pay the bills. I had her write the checks to the company. Amanda, was this training enough? Did you feel prepared to handle your own finances when you left home?

Amanda: Yes, but I wish I had more in-depth training on how to balance my checkbook. It’s not as simple as I thought – pull up my account, see if my debits went through, balanced. Aaron, how about you? Aaron: I want more control of my account. I want to be more involved in the management of it. Lisa: He’s always calling me, “I need money for this and that. Do I have money for gas?” You have money on your card, I say. He doesn’t have a clue how much he has. He doesn’t have access to see his account and I realize it’s time to let him start learning. He only has one more year left. Learning from Amanda, I need to give Aaron more independence with this account while he is still at home with me so I can help him. I started a little too late with Amanda. She was already out of the house, and so she’s often calling me with questions and needing help. What’s most important to you when looking for a bank for your kids? Lisa: Location (in the college town). Free account. I don’t want their accounts eaten up by service charges. And, ATM locations. Amanda: Easy access to

money in emergency and to be able to transfer money with mom. Mobile banking, definitely. Lisa: Amanda went to RSU at first, so we opened up an account at RCB Bank since I work there. It was easy to transfer money if need be and help her out. Later, she moved to Hawaii and had to open an account there. I remember her calling me from the parking lot asking what to do and what all she needed. I realized I need to let my son be more active in managing his account now before he leaves home. I did tell Amanda to keep her Oklahoma account and debit card open, so in case of emergency, I can access and transfer money into her account. What about Aaron? Have you thought about where he’ll bank? Lisa: He plans to go to Pitt State. No RCB Bank branch there, so we’re still figuring that out. With mobile banking and direct deposit, he might not have to change banks. Any personal advice on money matters for other young adults and parents? Amanda: It’s important to keep up with your account. It can get out of control real quick.

Lisa Armendarez, a banker at RCB Bank, along with her husband, Benny, and children, Amanda and Aaron.

It’s important to stay on top of it and saving. Prepare for things that might come up unexpectedly, new tires, doctor bills. You’ve got to put extra money back each month. Lisa: Don’t wait until your child is out on their own to teach them about money. Start early. Give them an active role in managing their account and train them while still under your roof. Boogying to Benefit the Community “A Celebration of Helping Others: Dancing with the Stars of Rogers County” will be held Saturday, August 23 at the Robson Performing Arts Center.

By Sheryl Sowell

August 23 at 7 p.m. as part of “A Celebration of Helping Others: Dancing with the Stars of Rogers County 2014.”

Co-sponsored by the Claremore Reveille Rotary Club and RCB Bank, the event will feature dance couples representing several non-profit Rogers County agencies. “We want to bring recognition to some agencies in our county that are not widely recognized for the good they do in the community. They are the real stars,” says Steve Gragert, event chairman. The Claremore Reveille Rotary Club’s role in the event is a reflection of the members’ Paige Montgomery and her partner, Joel Reimer, practicing their dance commitment steps for last year’s Dancing with the Stars of Rogers County. to community

service. “As an organization dedicated to helping others, we assist locally with college scholarships, the Dictionary for 3rd Graders project throughout Rogers County, and many other area projects. A portion of the proceeds from the event will help fund our ongoing programs.” “Sometimes people find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and need help,” says Steve. “The nonprofits who will be participating in Dancing with the Stars go out and help others, and not everyone knows the role they play in bringing our community together.” Dancing with the Stars – Rogers County style – will showcase couples representing the following agencies: Volunteers for Youth, Healthy Community Partnership Rogers County, Child Advocates of Northeast Oklahoma, Rogers County Youth Services, Rogers County Adult Day Care, William W. Barnes Children’s Advocacy Center, and Safenet Services. Other organizations may also participate. Booths will also be set up in the PAC lobby so visitors can browse to learn more about the function and mission of each organization represented. In addition, short videos highlighting each participating organization will be shown. Mendy Stone, Volunteers for Youth, and Herb McSpadden will serve as emcees for the evening. Three judges will be

raising their scorecards to rate each of the couples; one will be a celebrity judge, and the others will be individuals experienced in judging dance competitions. The audience, however, will have the final vote of the evening. During a 20-minute intermission, audience members will be able to visit the nonprofit booth of their choice to cast a vote by dropping dollars into a canister. “The People’s Choice will be declared the winner,” says Steve. “A male and female winner will each receive a trophy declaring that they are ‘The Best Dancer in Rogers County, 2014.’” Music will be provided during the voting intermission after all of the dance teams have performed and in the lobby after the awards have been announced. For a $20 admission fee, attendees can embrace local talent and learn more about agencies who are giving back to the community while enjoying an evening of music and dance. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any participating agency, a Claremore Reveille Rotary Club member, or at the Robson PAC Box Office.

Nursing Excellence at the Bedside word of mouth from other nurses that, as an employer, Saint Francis went above and beyond.” Nicole loves being part of a team that delivers high quality care focused on excellent patient outcomes. She also helps with orientation and education for new nurses and helped create the unit-based council in her department. “Members have a voice in what’s happening in their departments. These committees identify areas to work on and ways to improve customer satisfaction,” she explained. “The return can be opportunities for awards, prizes and praise; something as simple as thanking a co-worker for helping out during a busy night.”

Clinical Staff Incentives. Saint Francis is a leader in continuing education for its nurses as well as scholarships for first time RNs. Through the hospital, Nicole has received her advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), CPR and IV nurse specialist training. Saint Francis will have provided over $500 in materials by the time she takes her national certification. Passage of the nurse’s first national certification would then be reimbursed. When her youngest child is a bit older, Nicole plans to get her master’s degree – another cost partly reimbursed by Saint Francis. For now, her 18-monthold daughter goes to daycare at Saint Francis’s on-site center, Ave

continued from page 1

Maria. “It’s so convenient. I am able to visit her during my lunch break,” Nicole said. “One of the great things about being an employee with Saint Francis Hospital is having my child nearby at Ava Maria.” What’s ahead. Saint Francis’ two new Respiratory Care Units will more than double the patient care capacity. The current unit is the only designated RCU in Tulsa, and one of a limited number nationwide. Established in 2002 with six beds under the current Clinical Nurse Manager, it grew to 16 beds and will expand to 36 beds. “The demand is there. We have a waiting list,” Nicole said. The RCU offers state-of-theart equipment and excellent

resources, providing an additional level of care between ICU and patient room. The unit serves patients with pneumonia, chronic lung disease, COPD, emphysema, congestive heart failure, lung cancer, or trauma that includes respiratory. “RCU patients get stronger faster than if they were in the ICU,” Nicole said. Patients can do other therapies at the same time, and can be discharged directly to home or another facility. The RCU enjoys a patient to nurse ratio of 3:1. “Currently, it’s a total care unit, which means the RNs provide all patient care. In the new units, nurse techs will help with activities of daily living,” she said. Greater one-onone care is a plus for nurses and

improves patient outcomes. “Many nurses have been here for years. That says a lot about a hospital,” Nicole said. “I’ve worked for other hospitals. I love it at Saint Francis because of the care I’m able to provide and the co-workers with whom I get to work. We’re not like a family – we are a family,” she said.

Contemporary-Rustic Refuge continued from page 1 district in Tulsa. Owner Clinton Taylor, Jr. is optimistic about carving out a niche amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. “We are bringing a new design of furniture and home décor that nobody has really seen in this area. I’m really excited about it,” he says. Tulsans tend to adopt a broad palette when it comes to home décor, combining urban and modern influences with more organic, timber-based items inspired by an agricultural heritage. At first, such tastes may seem to inhabit opposite ends of a spectrum; but The Refuge Lifestyle proves otherwise, catering to folks’ love of sleek, warm, wood-based aesthetics and sturdy, timeless craftsmanship. “The term ‘rustic’ is used in a variety of ways, nowadays. Whereas before ‘rustic’ simply referred to log furniture. That’s not the case anymore,” explains Taylor. As with any design movement, things expand and evolve over time. “We intertwine barn wood, juniper and slab wood to implement a rustic, modern, contemporary feel.” The Refuge Lifestyle represents the modern evolution of rustic and craftsman décor. Taylor’s father, Clinton Taylor, Sr. established the furniture store years ago, with much of the furniture crafted by his own hands. Today, while original works are still available, the Taylors bring elegant rustic pieces from all over the country. Their long-standing relationships with larger, well-known manufacturers like Green Gables and Woodland Creek means their store offers often hard-to-find furniture at competitive prices. While the new Tulsa location will have a distinctly more contemporary feel than the original Bixby store, both outlets are best viewed as showrooms for an impressively large inventory which

includes large furniture, such as couches and bed frames, to smaller items like tables and nightstands, and even accent pieces like picture frames, wall and table decorations. And, whether you are searching for that perfect piece to complete your room or planning a from-the-ground-up design, there is no doubt The Refuge Lifestyle has what you seek. “Only about five percent of our total inventory fits in our stores,” Taylor says. “We have over 1,500 unique products, and most are customizable in size and color.” He is quick to add that he and his staff are always willing to help customers find the perfect fit for their home, even if it means searching their own warehouse or calling up suppliers. Additionally, they routinely consult on larger design schemes for single rooms or entire homes. “Many of our customers come in to order for their vacation homes in Colorado and California,” he says. The Refuge Lifestyle has two locations to serve you. Store hours for the Bixby store are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Tulsa store will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Pathway to Wellness and fake fats is taking a huge toll on our health. And metabolic disease is occurring at earlier ages than ever before. Once a disease thought to onset in the older years, Type 2 diabetes is showing up in our young people. “When we learn to tame our lifestyle, we can control not only diabetes, but other metabolic diseases and syndromes of chronic inflammation.” True to her commitment to healing patients from the root cause of their ailment and empowering them with the resources to maintain the best possible health, Dr. Neil incor-

porates a program called “Physicians Prescription for Nutrition.” This consists of a 12week lifestyle modification/education series that is individualized for each patient. The goal is to teach them to make the best choices regarding nutrition, exercise, stress and hormone balance. She teaches an ongoing nutrition clinic series of comprehensive health and wellness topics. “Nutrition is 85 percent of our long-term outcome,” she adds. Yes, we really are what we eat. To assist Dr. Neil in this endeavor, the Functional Medical Institute welcomes Naturopath Mark Sherwood. Dr. Sherwood

continued from page 1 has an extensive background in nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle counseling. He states, “There is no time like the present to make a change. Now is the time! We simply do not have time to not have time.” With the combination Doctors Neil and Sherwood, you will experience an extremely dynamic pair who lives out their passion. “We promote a team environment based on trust, accountability, and excellence. You will get results.” The sooner imbalance is discovered and treated, the better health one can expect in the future. Dr. Neil is accepting new patients who want to get well and

stay well with her help at the Functional Medical Institute. “Come and experience the wellness life.”

Do You Want It Done Right? Dun-Rite Roofing has offered complete quality roofing services for 22 years.

By Christopher Davis

Oklahoma is known for its extreme temperatures. Currently, we are in the midst of another scorching summer. Such persistent heat can wreak havoc on roofs. Within a month or two, torrential thunderstorms will reveal any damage done over the summer, only to be followed by the threat of ice and snow. In order to rest easy during the fall and winter, call in the experts at DunRite Roofing. Owner Jim Murr and his crew will ensure your home or business is prepared for the impending weather changes so you don’t have to break out the tarps and buckets. Based in Owasso, Jim Murr started Dun-Rite in 1992, providing roofing services for mostly “new construction” home builders. He and his small crew earned a reputation for quality work and, before long, found themselves providing roofs for both new

construction and complete tear off and roof replacements, including wind and hail repair, as well as seamless guttering. Now, Murr coordinates several crews who can address almost any roof-related project. Dun-Rite covers a large swath of Green Country from their Owasso office and warehouse.

Murr notes, “We take clients as far out as Grand Lake.” Oklahomans have seen record-setting heat in recent years, and drought conditions are not improving, according to the national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The trend has been longer stretches of heat waves

punctuated by short bursts of heavy rain. Excessive heat can inflict damage on rooftops. Murr points out that once shingles begin to warp, roofs are prone to further damage later on. “Once there is a way for the rain to seep down, underneath the shingles, it can get bad quickly,” he says. Given that when it does rain, it rains hard, homes and businesses with unchecked damage in shingles can spell disaster. Further, once the storm season settles in, the ways in which rooftops suffer damage only increase. “All it takes is for a fallen branch to break through or a small patch of shingles to blow off during a storm,” Murr says. If damaged shingles go unrepaired, winter weather will make matters worse. Once

www.ValueNews.com

moisture seeps beneath shingles, routine freeze cycles will cause deeper, more significant damage to rooftop structures and even walls and electrical systems. The expansion of frozen water in building materials compromises durability, and it does not take long for rot to set in. The sooner action is taken, the less costly the repairs will be. Contact Murr and his crew for an honest assessment of your roof’s status. During consultation, Dun-Rite will provide thorough information about various shingles and materials, as well as explain related topics like aesthetic, budget and energy conservation. Once materials are selected and a job is planned out, Murr says, it usually takes a single day to complete. Dun-Rite understands the value of time and is committed to their customers’ satisfaction. Dun-Rite has a solid track record of delivering stellar service. The Better Business Bureau gives them an A+ rating. If you are not confident your roof is prepared for winter, then the time is perfect to schedule a visit from Dun-Rite.

SAY “NO” TO BACK SURGERY “After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My whole life changed, not being able to escape the disabling pain. After cortisone epidurals in my spine, the pain returned. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. Dr. Day was one of the first doctors in the area to use this new treatment and has had over 30 years experience treating bad backs. So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am now able to get up in the morning and get dressed by myself, put my shoes on without holding on to something (which I haven’t been able to do in a very long time). I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said ''No!'' to back surgery. Thank you, Dr. Day for everything you and your staff did for me!"

PPow Wow of Champions The Intertribal Indian Club of Tulsa (IICOT) will be hosting the 37th annual event August 8, 9 and 10, 2014 at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center. By Lynnetta Blalock

Experience the beauty and richness of Native American culture when the Intertribal Indian Club of Tulsa (IICOT) hosts the 37th annual Pow Wow of Champions August 8-10, 2014. The dance is located at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center, 7777 S. Lewis in Tulsa. The Mabee Center will come alive in a colorful expression of dance, drum music and song as members of tribal nations throughout the country gather together to honor, strengthen and share traditions with each other and the general public. The dance spectator area will be held in air conditioned comfort. Over 300 dancers, dressed in full Native American dance clothes, will participate throughout the weekend in ceremonies and dances, including Grand Entries, intertribal dances and dance competitions. The Grand Entries mark the beginning of pow wow

sessions, led by the Eagle Staff and the United States flag carried by a Native American Color Guard. The procession of dignitaries and dancers is a brilliant and constantly moving sea of color circling the arena to the rhythmic beat of drum and song. It is a photographers’ paradise; watching the Grand Entry is exciting and awe-inspiring. It is impossible not to move with

the rhythm of the drum and be caught up in the energy. In the competitive sessions, dancers use the whole arena to exhibit their skills with grace and finesse while attempting to catch the judges’ eyes with their personal style, footwork falling on the beat of the music, and striking dance clothes. The Pow Wow of Champions will also feature an Arts and Crafts Mart with an excellent selection of traditional and contemporary jewelry, artwork, beadwork, paintings, and quality handcrafted items, rarely seen in one location. Traditional foods will be a prominent part of this annual pow wow. Fry bread, meat pies, and Indian tacos will be available, as well as many other tempting and tasty items. Step back into time – there is plenty of Free Parking. A souvenir program book that includes information on the different dance styles will be

available for purchase. The doors will open at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 8 with dancing beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, August 9 and Sunday, August 10, the doors will open at 11 a.m. with dancing beginning at noon. The Pow Wow of Champions is a family event, and is an alcohol and drug free event. Tickets are available at the door the days of the event. IICOT is also inviting all Tulsa Public Schools students to attend the pow wow for free, with one paid adult admission per free student. TPS students must bring either last year’s report card or their student ID to be admitted free.
