To Tulsa area amateur photographers of all ages: Tulsa Garden Center offers you the opportunity to exhibit your photographic art during the Portraits of a Garden Amateur Photography Contest and Exhibition held at Tulsa Garden Center. Exhibition days will be January 24–26 and January 28 through February 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.). Photographers’ entries may be submitted at Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Peoria Ave. Tuesday through Saturday, January 7-11 and 1418, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. How often have you seen something in nature and thought, “That would make a great picture”? Take that great picture and share it at the Portraits of a Garden 2014 Contest. Join like-minded and talented amateur nature photographers in sharing pictures of some of the great gardens and nature for

which Northeastern Oklahoma is famous. Entry categories are: Creatures in a Garden; Digitally Manipulated Garden Photos; Gardens in Woodward Park; General Garden Photos; Linnaeus Teaching Garden; Seasons in the Garden; Single Flower in a Garden; and Water Features. There are three divisions in which photographers are classified: Beginners, Intermediate and Masters. Children and Youth may enter either the Beginners or the Intermediate Divisions, unless they’ve qualified for the Masters Division. Masters can only compete in the Masters Division. Masters are defined as individuals who have previously won three or more first place awards in a Tulsa Garden Center Portraits of a Garden Photography contest. The contest is open to amateur photographers only. (continued on page 22)

DLSS Systems and Tel-Star Technologies provide a variety of custom communications and technology solutions, ranging from security and video surveillance, phone and computer networking, to system integration. As longtime friends, both Kevin Dyson and Mike Eubanks worked as managers for large technology companies. As the industry swallowed up smaller companies throughout the 1990s, a void was left in this region. In the late 90s and into the new millennium, Dyson and Eubanks found a natural synergy

VVendors Wanted for Spring Show Save the date for the 2014 Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show.

By Carol Beck-Round

While most of us are hiding underneath warm blankets to stave off the cold, plans are already underway for the annual Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show set for March 21-23 at the Claremore Expo Center. What better way to end the winter doldrums than with seminars, exhibits and demonstrations to get you prepared for spring? Since 1988, the Rogers County Builders Association, a non-profit, has been partnering with area businesses and organizations

to bring the show to Claremore, according to Brett Knapp, homebuilder and general manager of this year’s show. This year’s show, as in the past, will feature a wide variety of exhibits from home interior galleries, designer showcases, kitchen and cooking demonstrations, backyard landscaping, “do it yourself” seminars and hundreds of new garden and patio products – everything you need to create or remodel your dream home in one location, according to the show’s organizers.

The 2014 Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show members include (back row from left): Anthony Tucker, Driven Digital; Ron Burrows, Claremore Expo Center general manager; Savannah Haddock, Value News; Ann Baker, Master Gardeners Association of Rogers County co-president; (front row): David Moore and Bethany VanHorn, Driven Digital; Brett Knapp, RCBA; Chris Burdan, BancFirst; Laurel DeLammermore, RCBA; Bill Biard, Hammett House; and Jimmy Holmes, Installed Building Products.

Hammett House owner and chef Bill Biard is one of the scheduled celebrities who will be taking the stage for cooking demonstrations during the three-day event. Claremore Progress readers chose the Hammett House as the 2013 Reader’s Choice Best Restaurant in Rogers County. With over 140 booths available, both inside and outside the Expo Center, the committee lined up to organize and promote this year’s show are now seeking vendor applications for the 2014 show. “Vendors, as well as those who wish to sponsor the show, can go to our website to download an application,” says Knapp. “We have assembled a great team to make this year’s show one of the best.” Chris Burdan, with BancFirst, has always been a big supporter of the Rogers County Builders Association. “I’ve been a member of the show committee for 10 years and always look forward to helping make the show a success,” she says. Another committee member, Ann Baker, 2013 co-president of the Master Gardeners Association of Rogers County, also plays a big role in the success of the event.

John Haase, horticulturist educator with the OSU Extension Office in Rogers County, will once again be presenting several gardening seminars during the three-day show. He says, "We've worked closely with the Rogers County Builders Association on the design of the show since its inception in 1988. We are excited to be partnering with them again this year." Knapp adds, "I look forward to working with Ann and John again." Other 2014 committee members include Laurel DeLammermore, executive officer of the RCBA. “I started as a volunteer with the show three years ago,” she says. “I’m excited for this year’s event.” Claremore Expo Center General Manager Ron Burrows is also returning to the team to help coordinate this year’s show. “We worked together well last year and I’m looking forward to working with Ron again this year,” says Knapp. “He is an asset to our team.” This year’s show will be heavily promoted as Fox 23 in Tulsa and Driven Digital, a full-service digital marketing agency, have been hired by the committee to promote the show, making it an effective

venue for vendors who want to showcase their business. “As the official digital marketing agency for the 2014 Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show, you can expect a new look for the show and an allnew experience,” says Anthony William Tucker, Chief Strategy Office at Driven Digital. The year’s show theme is, “Improve Yours,” according to Tucker. “We are taking the initiative to improve every engagement you have with the show.” To see what Tucker is talking about, you can check out the new mobile and tablet friendly website, TheRogersCountyHomeAnd GardenShow.com or get social on Facebook.com/TheRogersCo untyHomeAndGardenShow. To download a vendor application or to find out more about the 2014 show, check out their website.

BBringing Broadway to Broken Arrow The Ten Tenors kick off a new year singing Broadway’s greatest hits at the Broken Arrow PAC.

By Christina Dixon

Continuing its fifth anniversary season, the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center kicks off 2014 with internationally acclaimed singing sensation The Ten Tenors, who will be celebrating Broadway’s greatest hits on Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $60 and are available at www.brokenarrowpac.com or (918) 259-5778. “This incredible live experience from one of the hardest working touring acts is an absolute must-see,” BAPAC Executive Director Mark Frie said. “The Ten Tenors have a unique approach to combining a mixture of rock and classical music with some of Broadway’s greatest tunes, resulting in a sound that is uniquely theirs.” This musical ensemble shot to international fame during a guest spot on Oprah Winfrey and hasn’t stopped since. Amidst incredible international success, this Australian troupe has performed an average of 250 shows per year across seven

continents. Continually striving to challenge themselves and their audience, they have sold over 3.5 million concert tickets, have four gold CDs and two platinum, as well as two gold DVDs and one platinum. “The Ten Tenors respectfully tip their hats to their classical roots and share with audiences unique renditions of the genre’s best pieces, but they also push the boundaries of what it means to be a tenor and to sit in the classical genre in today’s world,” according to The Ten Tenors website. The Ten Tenors will lend their talent and individuality to a collection of Broadway’s most loved classics, including “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha,” “Music of the Night” from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Bring Him Home” from “Les Misérables.” Closing out Broken Arrow PAC’s fifth anniversary is the Oklahoma debut of the new Broadway smash “Bring It On: The Musical” on Feb. 18 and Tony-Award®

winning Best Musical “Memphis” on April 22. On Feb.18, the BAPAC theatre will be full of explosive dance and aerial stunts as “Bring It On: The Musical” presents a night sprinkled with sass. Inspired by the 2000 film “Bring It On,” this musical will take the audience on a high-flying journey through friendship, forgiveness and determination. It tells the story of the chal-

lenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill of extreme competition, which is sure to be everything the audience hoped for and nothing like they expected. April 22 brings awardwinning “Memphis” to Broken Arrow from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee. A winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, “Memphis” bursts

off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, “Memphis” is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. Come along on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves– filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll. Tickets are available now at the BAPAC Box Office located at 701 South Main in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at (918) 259-5778, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patrons can also visit the BAPAC Facebook page at facebook.com/ brokenarrowpac for show updates and more. HHonoring the Spirit of the American Indian Don’t miss the Greater Tulsa Indian Art Festival January 31-February 2, 2014 at the Glenpool Conference Center.

By Sheryl Sowell

The Greater Tulsa Indian Art Festival will be held January 31 through February 2, 2014 at the Glenpool Conference Center, located at Highway 75 and 121st Street. The festival is a national premiere juried art show showcasing Native art, cuisine and entertainment. As a showcase of fine art and tradition honoring the spirit of the American Indian, the event features an art market, cultural demonstrations, storytelling, American Indian food, a student art exhibit, cultural demonstrations and music. The Greater Tulsa

Jeri Redcorn, Honored Elder Artist for the Greater Tulsa Indian Art Festival.

Indian Art Festival is a nonprofit organization sponsoring scholarships in visual and performing arts to qualified American Indian and Canadian Status Indian students. Jeri Redcorn, Caddo artist, is the Honored Elder Artist for the festival. Raised in Colony, Oklahoma on her Caddo father’s cotton farm, and working with her seven brothers and sisters, Jeri felt close to the earth. Sometimes too close, it seemed: chopping and pulling cotton, crawling in the rows of dirt. But the hard work allowed her to appreciate the closeness of women who dug clay to make the pots that became her passion. A self-taught potter, Jeri uses the techniques of her ancestors. Since she is reclaiming this lost art, she imagines what their tools were. She hand coils, burnishes engraves and wood fires her pots. See more about her amazing pottery at www.redcornpottery.com. Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee) is the Poet in Residence for the 2014 Greater Tulsa Indian Art Festival. Harjo is a poet,

writer, lecturer, curator and policy advocate who has helped Native peoples recover more than one million acres of land and numerous sacred places. She serves as President of the Morning Star Institute, a national Native American rights organization based in Washington, D.C. Harjo has developed important federal laws protecting Native sovereignty, arts and cultures, language, and human rights. She helped found the National Museum of the American Indian and has worked for several White House administrations. Brent Learned, an awardwinning and collected Native American artist from Oklahoma, is the festival’s 2014 featured artist. He is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. Brent draws, paints and sculpts the Native American Indian in a rustic impressionistic style. He has always appreciated the heritage and culture of the American Plains Indian, and tries to create artwork to capture the essence, accuracy and historic authenticity of their way of life. Although Brent has many different styles, he is typically known for his use of bold vibrant colors. Brent’s

work resides in museums such as the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C., Cheyenne/Arapaho Museum in Clinton, Oklahoma, National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and the University of Kansas Art Museum. The Greater Tulsa Indian Art Festival will feature special entertainment throughout the weekend. The Tsosie family has performed at the festival for several years, dazzling patrons and fellow artists with their beautiful exhibition style dancing. The Tsosie family travels all over the United States, attending traditional gatherings as well as Native fairs and festivals. The family enjoys the opportunity to perform and share their Native American culture. Horsechief Catering is contracted to provide all Native foods for the 2014 festival. Monie Horsechief is an enrolled Pawnee tribal member and also Cherokee. She has a background in the culinary field for 18 years. She is the 2009 and 2013 “National Indian Taco Champion” and

Compete or Eat at Soul Food Cook-Off The annual event will be held at the Muskogee Civic Center January 18, 2014.

By Sheryl Sowell

The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will take place at the Muskogee Civic Center, January 18, 2014. So far, nearly 100 chefs have registered for the event and will prepare their delicious soul food cuisine for thousands of attendees to enjoy. “The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off is

the perfect venue to celebrate the rich African American heritage of soul food,” says Cassandra Gaines, event creator and marketing director of the Muskogee Civic Center. “Soul food is simply comfort food made from scratch – sweet potato pie, smothered chicken and rice, smothered pork chops,

Enjoy delicious meats, vegetables, desserts, breads and more made by the finest soul food chefs around at the soul food cook-off.

homemade macaroni and cheese, greens, hot water corn bread, candied yams, peach cobbler. We bring together a diverse community of people who enjoy the tradition of enjoying good food together and having fun.” One of Cassandra’s responsibilities as marketing director of the Civic Center is to host multicultural community events. In 2004, she had the idea for a soul food cook-off to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The idea quickly caught on and is now spreading across the country. In each city, the event has featured some of the finest local chefs, until now unheralded, serving soul food to a sell-out crowd. Chefs from around the state and country are invited to participate in the cook-off. Categories include meats; vegetables; desserts; homemade breads; and miscellaneous homemade items, such as pickles, pickled okra, jellies, jams, hot sauce and barbecue sauce. Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second

and third place winners in each category. “We have even more people participating this year because the prize money is so high. The prize for first place in both the meat and dessert categories is $1,000. The winners for best vegetables, homemade bread, and the miscellaneous category each receive $100," says Cassandra. A cash prize for best booth decoration and costume will also be awarded. “Anybody who thinks they can cook is welcome. We have cooks of all ages and from all walks of life,” Cassandra explains. “We have many first-timers and many who return year after year.” The judging panel for the cook-off consists of professionals who either own or manage a restaurant. “The judges are different every year, and the cooks do not know who the judges are. It’s a fair game for everyone,” Cassandra says. “There is also a people’s choice award so those who attend can vote for their favorite dish.” If you’re not the best

cook but love some good soul food, admission to the event is $8, and includes all the delicious food you can handle. “This family-friendly event is guaranteed to produce fond memories and plenty of full stomachs,” says Cassandra. The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will be held Saturday, January 18 at the Muskogee Civic Center, located at 425 Boston St. The afternoon features great food, fun, cash prizes and an educational component regarding the history of soul food and cooking tips from some of the country’s top chefs. I SAID NO TO BACK SURGERY After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My whole life changed, not being able to escape the disabling pain. After cortisone epidurals in my spine, the pain returned. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. Dr. Day was one of the first doctors in the area to use this new treatment and has had over 30 years experience treating bad backs. So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am now able to get up in the morning and get dressed by myself, put my shoes on without holding on to something (which I haven’t been able to do in a very long time). Needless to say, “I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said no to back surgery”.

BBeing the Best is No Accident

Premier Collision has been setting the bar in collision repair standards since 2001. By Duane Blankenship

Ralph Higinbotham, co-owner of Premier Collision in Broken Arrow, has a team of highly skilled technicians that transform your wrecked vehicle into like-new condition and extend a Lifetime Warranty on all repairs and paint as long as you own the vehicle.

When co-owners Ralph Higinbotham and Monte Whitaker founded Premier Collision Center in 2001, they did so using a strong foundation of quality, service, experience and integrity. Premier remains locally owned and operated by the pair, who have successfully instilled their team of professionals with an outstanding willingness to provide the best possible customer service to everyone who walks through the doors. The first person you meet at Premier Collision is Fay Higinbotham, Ralph’s outgoing wife. When Fay greets you, you’ll instantly agree that she has never met a stranger. Her positive attitude permeates the business, and she has a way of letting you know that it’s never as bad as you think. The skilled repair and paint teams at Premier Collision are amazing at how they

www.ValueNews.com bring damaged vehicles back to original condition. Estimators and technicians have years of experience in successful collision repair. Another plus of Premier Collision is the Avis Rental Car service located on site for the convenience of patrons needing a car while their vehicles are being repaired. When notified that repairs are completed, simply drive to Premier Collision, drop off your rental, and inspect and receive your repaired vehicle. It couldn’t be much easier. Premier Collision also provides pick-up and delivery services for your convenience – just let them know your plans in advance. Ralph extends a lifetime warranty on all repairs and paint as long as you own your vehicle. “Most other companies don’t provide a lifetime warranty on paint,” says Ralph, “but we have such confidence in our PPG Waterborne Paint System that we do.” This system reduces harmful emissions by 80 percent, and Premier was the first collision center in the Tulsa area to switch to it. “We have the ability to match any color and it makes no difference whether the original paint was a solventor water-based coating,” he adds. “The waterborne paint system is environmentally ‘green’ and provides a beautiful factory finish that is just as durable as the finish

on a new vehicle.” It looks like we’re in for a long, cold, ice- and snowfilled winter. Unfortunately, some of us will be involved in fender benders, or hit a curb, pothole or ice chunk in the road. I hope you’re not a victim, but if you are, give Premier a chance to provide you with a quote to put your car back on track, looking good and running safely and well. If you slide into a curb this winter, don’t just shrug it off. Ralph recommends that you come in for an inspection to make sure that no invisible damage was done to the suspension system. It doesn’t take much to damage a shock, strut or tie rod end, and doing so can have a significant negative effect on your vehicle. Plus, a vehicle that is out of alignment can gobble up tires that will cost much more than an alignment. Premier Collision ensures that you’ll be totally satisfied with every detail of the repair work they provide. Come by for a quote when needed, no appointment necessary. Be safe!

Budgeting – a scary word that stirs up anxiety, fear and possibly failure. Each year, I create an extensive spreadsheet to track my spending habits, telling myself this is the year I

will save more money. I add formulas and worksheets so I can enter data easily and see exactly where my money is spent. I also use online tools to track my expenses. I cate-

gorize, set budgets, download apps and set up text alerts to inform me when I go over budget. This is all well and good until life in the New Year catches steam and my

www.ValueNews.com spreadsheet becomes a painstaking chore by March and the whole budget abandoned by April. “Motivation to keep saving is all about the end goal,” says Jill Dail, RCB Bank employee and avid Disney World vacationer. “If you keep in mind where your money is going (that you’re saving) and how much fun you’ll have when you get to spend it, it will be worth keeping up with the savings.” Dail shares her savings strategy that she and her husband use to plan for their annual trip to the Magic Kingdom. Successful savings starts with a clear goal. A trip, a car, retirement or an emergency fund; what’s your purpose for saving? Now: Write it down. “Physically writing down your goal creates an affirmation in your mind that you can continue to save money and will be able to reach your goal,” Dail says. Do a little research. What are the costs associated with your goal? For Dail’s Disney trip, she gathers prices for plane tickets, park fees, hotel and food. “Once I realize how much I will need, I divide it by 12 months to see what my average monthly savings should be to obtain that goal,” she says. Plan your savings strategy. How do you plan to save? Dail encourages you to think of ways to set your savings on auto drive. Many banks offer online banking services that allow you to

schedule auto-debits and transfer money between accounts, ridding yourself of the worry that you’ll forget to transfer the money or spend it before you save. “We also set up a separate checking account that earns interest each month based on our balance; we’re making money by saving money,” Dail says. Create a financial checklist to record your progress and stay motivated. It can be as simple as a Word document. List your starting balance. Add in your contributions each month and subtract your expenses. “If I know I’m going to make a large purchase in the future, I use this plan,” Dail says. “Works every time and allows me to be financially in control of those big ticket items. By the time our trip rolls around, I have plenty of money to enjoy it without feeling a pinch on my wallet.” This year, start saving with a purpose and gain financial control of your money. You can download Jill Dail’s Financial Checklist at our Newsroom. Go to www.RCBbank.com and select Newsroom for this and many other financial articles. Martial Arts Academy Celebrates 10 Years Chris Velez started his academy in Owasso a decade ago and has since opened a Tulsa location.

By Christopher Davis

Martial Arts Academy first opened in Owasso in 2003. Since then, Chris Velez, owner and senior chief instructor, has built a reputation for developing instructional classes that instill mental stamina, discipline and self-confi-

dence. With over two decades of experience in martial arts, Velez began training (specializing in tae kwon do) when he was six years old. As a teenager, he earned his black belt and began instructing

groups. Shortly after high school, he began instructing professionally and opened his own full time academy in 2003. As a 5th degree black belt, he strives to guide others in finding their own inner black belt.

(L to R): Rick Gibson, 3rd degree black belt, chief instructor; Taylor Carrell, 1st degree black belt, instructors’ assistant; Eric Buckendorf, 1st degree black belt, program director; Brianne Saul, 2nd degree black belt, assistant instructor; and Chris Velez, 5th degree black belt, senior chief instructor.

www.ValueNews.com Through word of mouth, classes at Martial Arts Academy in Owasso grew so rapidly that Velez found it necessary to move to a larger studio within two years. The transition to the larger facility took place in 2005, providing much needed space for instruction and offices at 9100 North Garnett Rd. The dedication of Velez and his team at Martial Arts Academy paid off, and it was not long before Velez was poised to move up a notch. He opened up a Tulsa location with his cousin, Rick Gibson, with whom he’d been training since childhood. Together, they run both facilities, with Mr. Velez primarily leading in Owasso and Mr. Gibson at Tulsa’s 61st and Memorial location. The progress has been organic, but focused, similar to the instructional style at Martial Arts Academy. While some martial arts classes divide groups up by age or skill level, Velez takes a different approach by including students of all ages, from 4 to 40 (and older), in the same group. “I’ve found that classes with only young children tend to end up more as playtime than focused instruction,” explains Velez. “Also, many families enjoy learning together.” Some might think that combining adults and children on the same mat may lead to distractions, but Velez’s experience

has been the opposite. “The children seem to keep the adults honest – they don’t cut corners because the kids are right there, watching them. There ends up being less distractions for the youngsters because there are teens and adults, modeling the forms alongside them.” Everyone wins when the full age range is represented in the groups. Velez does have different groups available, based on experience. Whether a student is a first-timer or a black belt, Martial Arts Academy will be able to provide a positive environment to promote focused learning. Velez and his team’s holistic philosophy of martial arts embraces the best of traditional ideas and infuses it with newer, progressive approaches to training. “Self-defense is very important,” says Velez, “but we also emphasize qualities such as mental strength, or focus, as well as confidence and self-control, or discipline.” In Velez’s view, the characteristics all reinforce one another, resulting in strong bodies with strong minds and healthy attitudes. AA Blend of Science and Art Glow Medical Aesthetics provides clients medical-grade skin care for a more youthful appearance. By Duane Blankenship

Jenny Guthrie, owner of Glow Medical Aesthetics, is an advanced practitioner registered nurse with a specialty in medical grade skin care, Botox cosmetics, and cosmetic fillers. Jenny has been a nurse for 17 years, a nurse practitioner for 12 years, and owner of Glow Medical Aesthetics for five years. She aids clients with skin care and anti-aging techniques in her office’s boutique setting with a medical focus. a natural appearance, which most of my clients want,” says Jenny. “Skin treatments, chemical peels and antioxidants are some of the tools I use to attain this goal.” All of these are non-surgical procedures and none are permanent. “They provide me the ability to accomplish our combined objectives by blending art and science. I feel I am able to provide clients a truly different level of care.” Glow Medical recently added MicroDot, automated Micro Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT). The process is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin’s texture, tone and color. During the procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in a thicker dermis with softer wrinkles. MicroDot also creates microchannels which allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively, enhancing their effects in deeper layers of the skin.

There are many benefits to the MicroDot technique including wrinkle reduction, texture, tone improvement and softer, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. MicroDot is a surface treatment with the benefits of laser, but without the downtime. “Science continues to refine this very precise treatment and I am seeing amazing results with it,” says Jenny. Glow Medical Aesthetics treats women and men. The advanced technique of underthe-skin cosmetic fillers decreases wear and tear on the skin while it softens age lines. While Botox does not treat volume loss, cosmetic fillers do, while providing a more youthful appearance.

Communication and Security Solutions between their companies that enhanced their teams’ abilities to deliver stellar service on major technology systems. Whether the project is large-scale, such as with casinos, or smaller residential endeavors, DLSS Systems and Tel-Star Technologies have earned a reputation for excellence where the high-tech world crosses paths with consumer problem solving. “If it’s low-voltage, we do it,” says Kevin Dyson, summing up DLSS Systems and Tel-Star Technologies complex services in a simple sentence. The partner companies operate as one and specialize in customized systems of all sorts. Phone systems – including private branch exchange (PBX), computer networks, lighting and sound, video, surveillance and alarm systems are all services provided by the experts at DLSS and Tel-Star. Big or small, if it relies on wires or Wi-Fi, Dyson and Eubanks’ team can help you get the most from your technology.Systems operate without the need of a land line phone service. One of the more popular services they provide is lighting and sound system integration and automation. “We don’t want to walk into a building and see a lighting system and say ‘Wow, who did this?’ We want to be the ones installing these systems that wow peo-

ple,” says Mike Eubanks. And DLSS Systems and Tel-Star Technologies do, indeed, install some dazzling systems. Their custom integrated lighting and sound systems have brought life to casinos, hotels and even smaller private residences. Automated systems put monitoring and control of lighting, appliances, sound systems and security systems right in the palm of one’s hand. Their integration systems have an application for smartphones and tablets that allow the owner to unlock doors, turn lights off or even turn the sprinklers on. Such user-friendly technology is not only convenient, but increases the effectiveness of security systems as well. Safety and security is a concern for everyone. Providing turnkey systems for residential, business, industrial and educational facilities, the company works with each client to ensure their building is secure and manageable. Customizing each security system to suit the needs of the facility, DLSS and Tel-Star provide local and national monitoring, maintenance and response coordination. Customers will not find many details about security systems on their website, however, because DLSS and TelStar want to stay a step ahead of the criminals. Dyson and Eubanks will be

happy to share their comprehensive approach to maintaining safety in person, though. This local, individualized approach is part of the company’s success. “The trend with the larger security companies is to go out and win as many accounts as possible,” says Dyson. “We don’t view our customers as numbers; we build relationships. That's why DLSS Tel-Star was selected as Tulsa's Best for 2013.” For clients who like to do business with names, not call centers, Kevin Dyson and Mike Eubanks are available. DLSS

A Grassroots Approach to Affordable Healthcare for procedures are listed prominently in the front lobby. By eliminating third parties from the doctor-patient equation, costs are kept low, doctors and patients can spend more time discussing treatment and everyone wins. This straightforward approach, reminiscent of small-town practices, is advantageous for several types of patients. “Some of our patients have coverage, but want to avoid the wait times associated with larger hospitals,” says Dr. Tate. Others who have coverage may face high deductibles, and would rather not deal with paying the inflated cost of services at larger hospitals. And, for those who have no insurance at all, the clinic represents a surprisingly affordable alternative to urgent care or emergency room visits. Many of Dr. Tate’s patients are regulars because they trust her knowledge and appreciate the attention she dedicates to their health. Dr. Tate’s upbringing in a rural Oklahoma community guides her practice. A mother of five children, she understands the importance of trust in her role as physician. A graduate of OU College of Medicine,

Dr. Tate is board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics and has been practicing medicine since 1999. With extensive experience in urgent care, she is well qualified to treat just about any situation that may present itself at a general practice. And, if it turns out a patient needs to be referred to the emergency room, the fees are waived. It is that sort of reasonable and straightforward mindset that characterizes Grassroots Healthcare. “We treat our patients like people,” says Jane Velezquez, medical assistant. This motto is displayed by all staff, as well as in the procedures of the clinic. Medical records, though digitized, are not uploaded to “the cloud,” to ensure the strictest security and confidentiality. Because the majority of patients schedule appointments, wait times are always short – no one waits for an hour. Patients can count on the best rates, service, experience provided in a trusting and family-oriented environment. Now that flu season is in full swing, more and more people are discovering the convenience of a smalltown clinic in the city. Dr. Tate and her team have seen their days fill up

with appointments. Grassroots offers affordable flu shots, in addition to the usual services. Beyond getting the flu shot, Dr. Tate offers a few tips to ensure patients are at their best during this time of year. “Lemon with honey is helpful and boosts immunity,” she says, a tasty addition to hot tea. And, of course, washing hands and using sanitizer is a practice that cannot be encouraged enough. Finally, if flu symptoms such as fever or aches are noticed, she recommends people “visit a doctor as soon as possible,” so any medications that may be pre-

scribed need to be taken early in the illness. If you're seeking an affordable and personable healthcare experience, call Grassroots Healthcare at (918) 878-7733 to schedule an appointment. For more information, contact

the BBringing Community Together Country Grannie’s Play House now serves the Inola community from a new location. By Cassie Woods

At Country Grannie’s Play House in Inola, rescued and handcrafted items are the specialty. Owner Carolyn Dormier loves to bring life back to nostalgic pieces she has collected along the way, as well as create new items using the crafting supplies found in her store front. The store was recently relocated to its new location on Broadway after Dormier found the perfect little house she could transform into her thrift store paradise. Having purchased the new property just a few months ago, she

and her husband have been cleaning and remodeling it room by room to expand on the vision for Country Grannie’s Play House. “We were very excited that we were able to obtain this property at a fairly low cost,” said Dormier. “I expect the business to grow as we continue to refurbish the rooms in the house.” Customers will find lots of rescued thrift store type items as they browse through the rooms of Country Grannie’s Play House. A staple in the store, and one of

the things it is best known for, are the popular, handcrafted sock monkeys available for purchase. They can be fashioned from socks of all sizes and patterns and make great gifts. “I really enjoy teaching others to make the sock monkeys,” said Dormier. “Individuals or groups are welcome to stop by anytime for a lesson in how to put one together. The instruction is free and the material cost is minimal.” For those customers who may want to try a hands-on project, but aren’t completely sure of themselves just yet, Dormier offers the option of finishing a sock monkey from partially constructed patterns. Customers can pick out an unfinished sock monkey body and Dormier will teach them how to fill it with stuffing and stitch up the openings. She can even do the final sewing for them. Monkeys created by Dormier range in price from $10 to $25, and come in a variety of sizes, depending on the sock size. For specialty monkeys, there is a two-week notice requested to give time

Fabrics and yarns are available for purchase in the store for only 25 cents an ounce. Dormier also offers doll clothes, quilts, some crocheted items and hand-made reusable shopping bags. She offers the green shopping bags at a discounted rate for groups to use as a fundraising project, and she can teach customers how to make them as well. “The reusable shopping bags are very popular right now,” said Dormier. “I have tons of fabrics to choose from here in the store, so I think it’s a great way to give back to the community by creating something everyone can use. The students or civic groups can get them at a very low cost and then re-sell them to make money for their organizations.” Dormier also takes consignments on other handcrafted and rescued items. Consignments are done on a percentage basis for a limited number of items, or in exchange for crafters working in the store. Vendor booths are also available. Additionally, Country Grannie’s Play House will begin holding yard sales every weekend in the spring. There is also a room in the back of the house that is available for members of the community to reserve for parties. And there will soon be kitchen facilities available for

those who reserve the room. “I would love to see people bring their friends in for crafting parties, as well as using the space for birthday parties or family reunions,” said Dormier. “We really just want it to serve the community’s need for a meeting space for whatever they may have going on.” She also has added TVs and Wi-Fi to the craft room with the hopes of appealing to a younger audience. Vendors who may not want to set up a booth are welcome to drop in and use the space to list their items on eBay and Etsy free of charge. “I really like to think of this business as a service to the community,” said Dormier. “My goal is to get the younger people in the community to come in here and use the building.” Country Grannie’s Play House is a great place for just about anyone. You can simply browse Dormier’s thrift store finds, check out made-in-Inola handcrafted items by other vendors, pick out the perfect sock monkey for a gift or learn how to craft something yourself. Dormier also has games that can be played in the store to keep little hands busy while mom is working on her project. For more information, contact

Helping Adults Turn A New Leaf

Currently, in the Tulsa metropolitan area, there are approximately 24,000 individuals with a developmental disability. Unfortunately, only 1,000 of those individuals are employed, which means the remaining 23,000 individuals are sitting at home isolated from society and the community in which they live. A local non-profit, A New Leaf, is on a mission to change that startling statistic and get individuals with developmental disabilities employed in their communities at a competitive wage. Each day, the service provided to individuals with developmental disabilities from A New Leaf transforms each individual’s life and allows them the opportunity to contribute to their community, form a peer group, and be a productive member of society. Hannah Scott, a lifelong resident of Inola, earned employment at a competitive wage as an administrative and janitorial assistant at the Inola Public Schools. Hannah started receiving vocational services from A New Leaf right out of high school. Through the DRS/Vocational Rehabilitation program, Hannah worked diligently to develop skills and traits to earn full-time employment after one year of vocational services at A New Leaf. Currently, Hannah works with an employment consult-

ant in order to learn the ins and outs of her job. After three months, Hannah will no longer need the assistance of her employment consultant, and she will be working independently. Hannah has a variety of duties at her job. She washes windows, mops floors, cleans restrooms, and performs administrative duties in the office. When asked what Hannah loves most about her job, she said, “I love working at Inola Public Schools because I attended and graduated from Inola.” Hannah also stated that she is saving her money to achieve a goal of attending Georgia State University in Atlanta. Mary C. Ogle, Chief Executive Officer of A New Leaf, and her staff could not be more proud of Hannah. “Hannah’s story is why we do what we do at A New Leaf. Hannah is proof that individuals with developmental disabilities are educated and equipped to perform any job and desire employment, just like you and I do,” she said. A New Leaf, a Tulsa Area United Way agency, provides individuals with developmental disabilities with marketable job training through horticultural therapy, community-based vocational placement, and residential services to increase their independence and individual choices. Nearly 100 individuals receive

vocational services from A New Leaf every day. Individuals work at A New Leaf’s six greenhouses growing and cultivating plants from seedlings, two public retail garden centers working on the register, selling plants, and interacting with customers, or on wholesale routes where individuals have the opportunity to sale plants to area florists. In addition, individuals also operate and work on janitorial crews in the community, provide plant maintenance to area businesses, and work at area businesses in the community such as hotels, churches, daycares performing a variety of services. A New Leaf is located at 2306 S. 1st Place in Broken Arrow. Founded in 1979, A New Leaf, Inc. provides programming in a greenhouse environment serving as a vocational training center for adults with developmental disabilities. A New Leaf, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization funded by sales to the public, Tulsa Area United Way and private contributions.
