Dr. Overtstreet-Hogle and staff help children focus on returning to school. By Christopher Davis

As fall comes into focus, families are preparing to send kids back to school. For children who wear glasses, this means it is time to endure the annual update to their prescription and select new frames – an often stressful and disappointing experience. However, there is one place in Claremore that will bring a new outlook to such trying eye appointments. Advanced Vision Center and Eyewear Boutique is likely to have children (and parents) looking forward to getting new glasses for the rest of their lives.

Offering the best selection, technology and care at affordable rates, Dr. Overtstreet-Hogle and her staff pride themselves on setting a new standard for pediatric optometry. While in college, Dr. Overstreet-Hogle specialized in pediatric optometry; so, it is no surprise her clinic boasts some special features that make kids feel at ease with their experience. Upon entering the eyewear boutique, customers are awestruck by the bright, open layout and their gaze is imme(continued on page 24)

Madison Todd under the new sign at The District on Main.

Sixteen-year-old Madison Todd is a remarkable young lady who is learning on a daily basis the many facets of running a successful boutique. Since her mother, Susan Todd, and her mom’s friend, Cari Bohannan, opened The District on Main in November of 2012, Madison has worked side by side with the two ladies, helping to build a successful business as well as build selfesteem amongst clientele by assisting women in finding their own personal styles. The District on Main is a boutique specializing in clothing and accessories for women of all ages. The store carries several popular lines including Brighton, Kendra Scott, Fossil, Lucky’s Jeans, and Southern Marsh. When asked to define Madison’s

position at the store, Susan and Cari answered, “She is our marketing manager, buyer, and model!” Susan added that their trust in Madison is so great that when she is needed, she actually runs the store. Madison has been an enthusiastic pupil both when it comes to running a business and keeping up-todate on the fashion and clothing industry. She maintains The District’s website and social media, making clients aware of the latest fashions and trends, often giving advice that is quite wise for one so young. With the school year and a changing season approaching, wardrobe changes are imminent, so Madison discusses how to (continued on page 24)

Dr. Abby Overstreet-Hogle with a young patient getting ready for back to school.

Sometimes, when the pressures of life mount up, you might feel as if you are “carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders,” as the old saying goes. But in reality, the weight of your personal world is carried not on your shoulders, but on your feet. Your feet provide your foundation when you are standing still and propel you into motion. Even with this truth, however, feet tend to be the “unsung heroes” of the human body – so it is no surprise that Tabitha Felts and the folks at Felts Shoes in Claremore frequently hear about all too common problems involving these undervalued appendages. “Almost daily, someone comes into the store complaining of heal pain, and

A Little Known IRS Secret: The In-Service Rollover Distribution BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Most folks think that the only way they can take control of their 401k is after they change jobs or retire. However, many 401k and profit-sharing plans allow for what is called an in-service rollover. In-service rollovers are often poorly understood by both plan sponsors and participants. I have folks call me often with lots of questions and confusion regarding this little hidden rollover opportunity. In this column I’ll hit the highlights about how an inservice rollover works. Then I’ll talk about some of the pros and cons of doing an in-service rollover.

Disadvantages of In-Service Rollovers

Advantages of the In-Service Rollover

There are several advantages to requesting an in-service rollover distribution. The first advantage is having access to a wider array of investments. CDs, stocks, bonds, and other investment options can be used inside of an IRA. By moving your assets out of your employer sponsored plan, you have access to all of these options and are not limited to whatever the plan has to offer. The second advantage is having a professional advisor to help you navigate your investment options. We sit down with our clients face to face twice a year to discuss their individual retirement needs. When our clients call us….they get a real person, not a call tree. Your advisor should also be able to help you develop a plan for how you will use these assets, while in retirement, to replace your employment income. An IRA allows access to more distribution options and is not being subject to the 20% mandatory tax withholding on distributions.

How an In-Service Rollover Works An in-service rollover is a non-hardship withdrawal, and there is no need to prove anything in order to take it. However, an employer-sponsored retirement plan is not required to allow for in-service withdrawals and can restrict the withdrawal amounts. An in-service rollover means that the distribution is directly rolled into an IRA. Therefore, the money is not subject to ordinary income tax nor a 10% federal tax penalty if taken before age 59 ½. In addition, there may be restrictions on which assets within the retirement plan are available for withdrawal, and the employer sponsoring the plan may have other rules concerning employee’s length of participation and how long the assets have to be held prior to withdrawal.

The disadvantages of in-service rollovers include a potential loss of the following: exception to 10% penalty if separated from service after attainment of age 55 and older. If an employee has attained age 55 and older, and then separates from service, they can take distributions for employer-sponsored plans that will not be subject to the 10% early distribution penalty. With IRAs, this option is not available. Most employer-sponsored plans offer a loan feature. Loans from an IRA are not allowed. With an employee sponsored plan, you may have the ability to delay required minimum distributions (RMDs) beyond age 70 ½ if you are still working. Lastly, tax advantages using net unrealized appreciation (NUA) strategy are not available for non-hardship in-service withdrawals. Careful consideration is needed to determine if this strategy is right for you. Give us a call to receive your free report on IRA Rollovers from Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plans. Teach Kids Money Management Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things fi nancial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the fi eld – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quickand easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Jocelyn Wood

When is a good time to begin teaching your kids about money and banking? “The earlier the better,” says Lisa Armendarez, a banker at RCB Bank. Armendarez admits even though she’s a banker, she’s learned a lesson or two from preparing her oldest child for life away from home. I sat down with Armendarez, and her two children, Amanda, 22, in college, and Aaron, 17, a senior in high school, to talk about money and their experiences. Lisa, how did you prepare your oldest for handling her own finances after she left home? Lisa: I got her a debit card early, when she was 16. I had control and put small amounts of money on it at a time. As she gained experience, I’d put more on it. When she got a job at 17, I handed it over to her to keep up with, balance and put money in. I also made her sit down with me on the 1st and 15th of each month to pay the bills. I had her write the checks to the company. Amanda, was this training enough? Did you feel prepared to handle your own finances when you left home?

Amanda: Yes, but I wish I had more in-depth training on how to balance my checkbook. It’s not as simple as I thought – pull up my account, see if my debits went through, balanced. Aaron, how about you? Aaron: I want more control of my account. I want to be more involved in the management of it. Lisa: He’s always calling me, “I need money for this and that. Do I have money for gas?” You have money on your card, I say. He doesn’t have a clue how much he has. He doesn’t have access to see his account and I realize it’s time to let him start learning. He only has one more year left. Learning from Amanda, I need to give Aaron more independence with this account while he is still at home with me so I can help him. I started a little too late with Amanda. She was already out of the house, and so she’s often calling me with questions and needing help. What’s most important to you when looking for a bank for your kids? Lisa: Location (in the college town). Free account. I don’t want their accounts eaten up by service charges. And, ATM locations. Amanda: Easy access to

money in emergency and to be able to transfer money with mom. Mobile banking, definitely. Lisa: Amanda went to RSU at first, so we opened up an account at RCB Bank since I work there. It was easy to transfer money if need be and help her out. Later, she moved to Hawaii and had to open an account there. I remember her calling me from the parking lot asking what to do and what all she needed. I realized I need to let my son be more active in managing his account now before he leaves home. I did tell Amanda to keep her Oklahoma account and debit card open, so in case of emergency, I can access and transfer money into her account. What about Aaron? Have you thought about where he’ll bank? Lisa: He plans to go to Pitt State. No RCB Bank branch there, so we’re still figuring that out. With mobile banking and direct deposit, he might not have to change banks. Any personal advice on money matters for other young adults and parents? Amanda: It’s important to keep up with your account. It can get out of control real quick.

Lisa Armendarez, a banker at RCB Bank, along with her husband, Benny, and children, Amanda and Aaron.

It’s important to stay on top of it and saving. Prepare for things that might come up unexpectedly, new tires, doctor bills. You’ve got to put extra money back each month. Lisa: Don’t wait until your child is out on their own to teach them about money. Start early. Give them an active role in managing their account and train them while still under your roof. Set for September 4-6 at the Expo Center grounds, an estimated 30,000 people will converge to enjoy what has become a Claremore tradition, according to Dell Davis, Claremore Chamber of Commerce director. “We have seen tremendous growth since the venue moved to Claremore,” says Davis. Prior to moving to Claremore 15 years ago, the event was set in Tulsa. “I think it speaks well to the event that we’ve lasted 35 years,” she adds. Davis credits the event’s long-running success in Claremore to the family-oriented atmosphere, wonderful sponsors to support it, as well as outstanding volunteers who give back to their community. Headline entertainment scheduled to date include Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Rhonda Vincent, IIIrd Tyme Out,

M Meet the Rice Staff The team of Rice Funeral Service provides quality, compassionate care to families. By Sheryl Sowell

Rice Funeral Service has been serving Rogers County and surrounding areas since 1945. Meet the sincere, knowledgeable staff that provides compassionate, quality care at a time when people need it the most.

Glenn Hutchison has become an important part of the staff at Rice

Funeral Service since December of 2013. He came to us with experience from the Stubblebean-Coffey Funeral Service in Pauls Valley, where he and his wife, Leta, resided before their return to Claremore. He is retired from the Homeland Grocery Corporation, but with so many talents to offer, retirement was never a fit. Glenn assists with multitudes of tasks at the funeral home and is most often available to assist during funeral ceremonies and many other behind-the-scene tasks. A member of the Claremore Assembly of God, Glenn often enjoys sharing his hobby of playing the guitar during church services. He also spends time helping his daughter and son-in-law in their new auction business. The J5 Auction Company in Oologah and their five grandchildren bring extra special joy to his and Leta’s lives.

Prearrangement Advisor Chandra Krafft

Chandra Krafft resides in Catoosa with her husband, David, a physical therapist in the area. Before joining the staff of Rice Funeral Service in 2011, Chandra worked in the insurance and financial service industry. She is a graduate of OSU with a degree in English. Because of the skills developed through study and work experience, she is able to fill several roles in our service to families. The staff at Rice believes that every life is a story, and every story deserves to be told; Chandra’s writing skills have allowed her to help put those very stories into the perfect words. She loves life in the country and enjoys riding horses and working in her garden. Sewing and quilting are also among her favorite things.

Funeral Assistant Glenn Hutchison

Gina Wilson Prearrangement Advisor

Gina Wilson has given thousands of hours of time to her community through her involvement in the Claremore Chamber of Commerce, Rogers County United Way, Claremore Main

Street, and many other worthy causes. Her volunteer spirit and tireless efforts reflect her desire to maker her town its very best. The business community has known Gina in her role as banker since 1981, when she made Claremore home. We at Rice were fortunate to be a part of her career change two years ago. Not only will you see Gina assisting during funeral ceremonies, but she is also the face that families see as they come to pre-arrange their celebration of life service. A student at RSU for the past two years, she has completed her basic course studies and is on target to begin the mortuary science program at Amarillo College in the fall. Though work, volunteer efforts and school require much of her time, she remains dedicated to the faithful care of her elderly mother, who makes her home at Claremore Nursing Home. Gina is also a part of the fellowship congregation at Cedar Point. When time allows, she enjoys travel, music and spending time with good friends.

Apprentice Funeral Director Haley DeLozier

Haley DeLozier, daughter of Kenny and Pam DeLozier, makes her home in Chelsea. She has been an integral part of the staff of Rice Funeral Service since 2010.

Managing Director Kenny DeLozier

Kenny DeLozier resides in Chelsea with his wife, Pam. They share a love of their rural home with their children and have enjoyed cattle ranching together – a passion passed down from Kenny’s dad, Kenneth Sr., who passed away this year. Another passion Kenny has is the devotion of his heart and soul for the community he serves through funeral service. That devo-

Owner/Director Kathy Dopp

Kathy Dopp is proud to represent a company that has been an important part of the service businesses in Rogers County since 1945. Next year will mark 70 years for Rice Funeral Service to provide their high standard of loving care to the community. T.G. and Opal Rice established their work in Claremore at the corner of Patti Page Blvd. and Muskogee. Kathy relocated the business in 1995, to its present location at 631 E. Will Rogers Blvd. Just this year, Rice’s Oologah location has become operational. Future plans are in progress to open facilities in Chelsea. Still just a vision

She began her career with Rice as an assistant to the then office manager, Michele Herron. Extremely competent in that position, she took over the office management spot when Michele moved out of state with her family. Haley was not only responsible for most of the office duties, but she also became a full-time student at Amarillo College’s mortuary science program, while also assisting funeral directors in numerous other areas of service to families. She has successfully completed her national funeral boards and will be a licensed funeral director and embalmer as soon as she completes her apprenticeship requirements in April of 2015. When 23-year-old Haley isn’t working, she loves life on the farm. Horseback riding and water sports are among her favorite hobbies. She has been an active member of Chelsea’s First Baptist Church for much of her life, and enjoys the fellowship of that congregation. tion is a perfect match with Kathy Dopp, who has owned Rice Funeral Service since 1977. Her own dedication to service along with Kenny’s is a rare but perfect partnership. Kathy has entrusted Kenny with the position of management, which he so capably carries out on a day-to-day basis. Kenny joined Rice in 2008 with the statement in his first interview, “I don’t know if I can do this work, but I want to try.” Immediately, he began to embrace families with a high standard of genuine care, coupled with an attention to detail that provides each family with the assurance that they will be taken care of when they need that care most. Kenny completed his mortuary science degree at Amarillo College and then successfully passed his national boards. At that time, he had many full time jobs – the family ranch operations (though that is a DeLozier family affair), Tulsa World distribution (a work his father had operated before passing the torch to Kenny), a local check cashing store, his position held at the funeral home, and full time student. Because he’s found his niche at Rice, he now focuses most his efforts into the work of managing the amazing team at Rice. – but all growth begins there first – a new chapel and community center are in the planning stages and will be located adjacent to the Claremore location. Kathy and Kenny are dedicated to providing the very best to all those they serve. Kathy came to Claremore in 1977 with the purchase of the funeral home. She has raised her children here and now enjoys watching her grandchildren grow and flourish in the community schools. The capable staff, under the leadership of Kenny DeLozier, provides Kathy with greater opportunity to enjoy family, friends, and travel. However, she remains fully invested in the future of Rice Funeral Service. She is incredibly proud of the high quality of service provided to all families, as well as the plans to expand and improve those services.

By Sheryl Sowell

August 23 at 7 p.m. as part of “A Celebration of Helping Others: Dancing with the Stars of Rogers County 2014.”

Co-sponsored by the Claremore Reveille Rotary Club and RCB Bank, the event will feature dance couples representing several non-profit Rogers County agencies. “We want to bring recognition to some agencies in our county that are not widely recognized for the good they do in the community. They are the real stars,” says Steve Gragert, event chairman. The Claremore Reveille Rotary Club’s role in the event is a reflection of the members’ Paige Montgomery and her partner, Joel Reimer, practicing their dance commitment steps for last year’s Dancing with the Stars of Rogers County. to community

A portion of the proceeds from the event will help fund our ongoing programs.” “Sometimes people find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and need help,” says Steve. “The nonprofits who will be participating in Dancing with the Stars go out and help others, and not everyone knows the role they play in bringing our community together.” Dancing with the Stars – Rogers County style – will showcase couples representing the following agencies: Volunteers for Youth, Healthy Community Partnership Rogers County, Child Advocates of Northeast Oklahoma, Rogers County Youth Services, Rogers County Adult Day Care, William W. Barnes Children’s Advocacy Center, and Safenet Services. Other organizations may also participate. Booths will also be set up in the PAC lobby so visitors can browse to learn more about the function and mission of each organization represented. In addition, short videos highlighting each participating organization will be shown. Mendy Stone, Volunteers for Youth, and Herb McSpadden will serve as emcees for the evening. Three judges will be

raising their scorecards to rate each of the couples; one will be a celebrity judge, and the others will be individuals experienced in judging dance competitions. The audience, however, will have the final vote of the evening. During a 20-minute intermission, audience members will be able to visit the nonprofit booth of their choice to cast a vote by dropping dollars into a canister. “The People’s Choice will be declared the winner,” says Steve. “A male and female winner will each receive a trophy declaring that they are ‘The Best Dancer in Rogers County, 2014.’” Music will be provided during the voting intermission after all of the dance teams have performed and in the lobby after the awards have been announced. For a $20 admission fee, attendees can embrace local talent and learn more about agencies who are giving back to the community while enjoying an evening of music and dance. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any participating agency, a Claremore Reveille Rotary Club member, or at the Robson PAC Box Office.

Nursing Excellence at the Bedside Saint Francis Hospital is currently hiring nursing staff for two new Respiratory Care Units opening this fall.

By Jane Zemel When Saint Francis Hospital opens two new Respiratory Care Units (RCU) in the fall, one of the first to show up for duty will be Nicole.

After 10 years on the job she’ll be just as excited as the day she started in the current RCU. Nicole said, “I came here a de-

cade ago because of the reputation for care Saint Francis provides. I heard through word of mouth from other nurses that, as an employer,

Nicole, RN at Saint Francis Hospital.

www.ValueNews.com Saint Francis went above and beyond.” Nicole loves being part of a team that delivers high quality care focused on excellent patient outcomes. She also helps with orientation and education for new nurses and helped create the unitbased council in her department. “Members have a voice in what’s happening in their departments. These committees identify areas to work on and ways to improve customer satisfaction,” she explained. “The return can be opportunities for awards, prizes and praise; something as simple as thanking a co-worker for helping out during a busy night.” Clinical Staff Incentives. Saint Francis is a leader in continuing education for its nurses as well as scholarships for first time RNs. Through the hospital, Nicole has received her advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), CPR and IV nurse specialist training. Saint Francis will have provided over $500 in materials by the time she takes her national certification. Passage of the nurse’s first national certification would then be reimbursed. When her youngest child is a bit older, Nicole plans to get her master’s degree – another cost partly reimbursed by Saint Francis. For now, her 18-month-old daughter goes to daycare at Saint Francis’s on-site center, Ave Maria. “It’s so convenient. I am able to visit her during my lunch break,” Nicole said. “One of the great things about being an employee with Saint Francis Hospital is having my child nearby at Ava Maria.” What’s ahead. Saint Francis’ two new Respiratory Care Units will more than double the patient care capacity. The current unit is

the only designated RCU in Tulsa, and one of a limited number nationwide. Established in 2002 with six beds under the current Clinical Nurse Manager, it grew to 16 beds and will expand to 36 beds. “The demand is there. We have a waiting list,” Nicole said. The RCU offers state-of-the-art equipment and excellent resources, providing an additional level of care between ICU and patient room. The unit serves patients with pneumonia, chronic lung disease, COPD, emphysema, congestive heart failure, lung cancer, or trauma that includes respiratory. “RCU patients get stronger faster than if they were in the ICU,” Nicole said. Patients can do other therapies at the same time, and can be discharged directly to home or another facility. The RCU enjoys a patient to nurse ratio of 3:1. “Currently, it’s a total care unit, which means the RNs provide all patient care. In the new units, nurse techs will help with activities of daily living,” she said. Greater one-on-one care is a plus for nurses and improves patient outcomes. “Many nurses have been here for years. That says a lot about a hospital,” Nicole said. “I’ve worked for other hospitals. I love it at Saint Francis because of the care I’m able to provide and the co-workers with whom I get to work. We’re not like a family – we are a family,” she said.

Opening of New Retail Store

www.ValueNews.com 11 retail locations are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Goodwill Industries of Tulsa no longer sells furniture in any of their retail stores. Furniture may be purchased at the Goodwill Auction, located at the north end of the parking lot at 2800 Southwest Blvd. The Auc-

furniture can be dropped off for donation. Goodwill Industries of Tulsa is a non-profit agency that provides work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment. The revenue from the sale of donated goods helps to fund Goodwill’s training programs and services.

Goodwill’s Southwest Boulevard retail store moves to brand new facility. By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrated the grand opening of its new “Route 66” Southwest Boulevard retail store in early July. The new store is located at 3110 Southwest Blvd., just south of Goodwill’s offices and former retail store. Goodwill President David Oliver provided a historical perspective of how Goodwill arrived at this point. In 2002, Goodwill completed an expansion of the existing headquarters facility at 2800 Southwest Blvd. and felt it would be enough space to accommodate the organization well into the future. “But, thanks to the foresight and strategic planning of an outstanding board of directors, and the unwavering commitment of Goodwill’s staff to grow our mission, the future came much sooner than expected,” said Oliver.

From 2002 to 2013, Goodwill has experienced exceptional growth. A total of 21 million pounds of donated items was collected and processed last year, an increase of 63 percent; total store sales increased by 160 percent; the total number of individuals served in Goodwill training programs and Job Connection Program increased by 673 percent; the total number of individuals Goodwill assisted in job placement in the community increased by 408 percent; and total wages paid to employees with barriers to employment increased by 160 percent. The new store represents Phase I of Goodwill’s total project. They will be remodeling the space at existing headquarters that was formerly occupied by the retail store. They will also add much needed training rooms for new initiatives such as collaboration with Union Public Schools to offer GED test

preparation classes at Goodwill, plus collaboration with United Way to offer free tax preparation services. They will also expand the space available for processing donations and improving the convenience for donors dropping off items. “The result of our incredible growth,” said Oliver, “was that we needed to expand and had the opportunity to purchase this site located so close to headquarters. By developing this property, Goodwill was able to expand our presence on Route 66.” Store Manager Jaime Monroe is filled with excitement about the new facility. “It’s a beautiful store with an art deco influence throughout, and it’s full of merchandise at incredible Goodwill prices,” she said. “And we are so excited to be partnering with the Tulsa Shock WNBA team for our grand opening celebration.” Regular store hours for all

IIt’s Bunco Time The 7th annual Gamma Pi ESA Bunco Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 23 to benefi t two Inola charities.

By Carol Beck-Round

Nothing creates more excitement in this rural Oklahoma community than a friendly game of Bunco, especially when it’s for a good cause. The Inola Gamma Pi ESA chapter is sponsoring its 7th annual Bunco fundraiser on Saturday, August 23 at the Inola Round-up Club, featuring an evening of competition, prizes, food and fun, all for a worthy cause. This year’s tournament proceeds will again benefit the Food 4 Kids program at Inola Elementary School. Sponsored by the Salvation Army, the program provides backpacks containing food for underprivileged children to take home on the weekends. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Compassion Women’s Center in Inola, a new nonprofit pregnancy resource center serving Rogers County. The Inola Ministry House, which provides free clothing and food to the needy, will also benefit, as Bunco participants who bring a non-perishable food item will receive a chance to win a basket of assorted

gift basket items. The more food items you bring, the more chances you have to win.

Members of the ESA chapter not only raise money to help worthy causes, they have a

good time doing it. And those who’ve attended past Bunco tournaments know they’re in for a treat. This year, to liven up the fun, the group is playing off their seventh anniversary. “We’re doing special things for our seventh year,” says Janie Stevens, club president. “We’re going to give away crazy prizes, including things pertaining to 7 or 77 and so forth. For example, we might give a prize to the seventh person to register, or someone with seven kids.” Local merchants and ESA members donate prizes, which include gift certificates to local businesses as well as an assortment of merchandise. Over 100 prizes are given away during the evening. “We’ve had everything from cases of pop to gift baskets to give away,” Janie adds. Bunco participants may also purchase tickets for $1 to participate in a 50/50 cash drawing. The winner receives half of the proceeds, while the other half goes to the ESA. Six tickets for $5 are also available. Last year’s total was $476, with the winner taking home half. Tickets are also being sold for a lap-size butterfly motif quilt. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased before the event. You do not need to be present to win. “We’re also selling tickets for a large hand-painted vase,” says Janie. “It’s an exclusive piece of art from Arizona donated by a former club member.” Tickets are also being sold in advance at the same price as

the quilt. Again, you need not be present to win. Participants are already pre-registering for the event because seating is limited. Those who pre-register will receive a handcrafted “goodie” tote bag, containing merchandise donated by local merchants and club members, as well as the Bunco rules and score cards. Each participant’s pre-registration fee of $15 also includes a free lunch of sandwich, chips, a homemade cookie, and water. Cost is $20 at the door, with Bunco starting at 4 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. A concession stand with sandwiches, chips, drinks and homemade desserts is available if you’re still hungry after your free meal. If you don’t want to miss out on the fun, you’d better preregister. Seats are going fast. To pre-register, call 918-637-0595 or email meadams@tds.net. If you live in Inola, you can also find promotional flyers around town with the registration form attached. “We’ve already had one person who pre-registered at the end of last year’s tournament,” Janie adds. “She didn’t want to miss out on the fun.”

Stopping Predators, Restoring Lives The Demand Project directs efforts, resources and energy toward the eradication of sexual exploitation of children.

By Duane Blankenship In 2004, Jason and Kristin Weis were living in “the perfect world” when a headline story gripped their hearts and changed their lives. The horrific report, unfortunately, tells the story of too many children in our country. A father had raped his threeyear-old daughter, videotaped his brutal crime and downloaded it onto the Internet. The devastating act attracted thousands of people who logged on to watch. At that monumental moment, Jason and Kristin asked, “How can we continue our safe life when so many children are living this type torture?” They then dedicated their lives to eradicating child sexual exploitation and received training to fight a battle for freedom for sexually abused children. Jason and Kristin co-founded The Demand Project with a mission to direct efforts, resources and energy toward eradicating sexual exploitation of children. Whether victims of trafficking, forced prostitution, online enticement, or child pornography, their mission is to end all sex crimes by targeting the demand (predator) side of sexual exploitation.

The couple’s organization works with, and in support of, ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children), a federal program under the jurisdiction of the OSBI. They work with OBN (Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics) by providing financial support and manpower. They support the Tulsa Police Department and have provided them with a high-definition camera and microphone to use when performing on-site interviews. The Demand Project assists Homeland Security by working to investigate and prosecute online predator and human trafficking cases. The four principle areas under which The Demand Project concentrates are prevention, prosecution, rescue and restoration. Prevention: to be in readiness. The Demand Project educates, equips and empowers the community on how to stay safe against child predators seeking to harm children. They do so by providing in-depth presentations, giving insights on how predators operate, how to keep our children safe online, and how to stay educated on technological trends. Prosecution: the process of

pursuing formal charges against an offender to final judgment. The Demand Project supports efforts of law enforcement’s key role in stopping child predators, protecting children and rescuing victims. “We have strategic relationships with law enforcement agencies that target child predators and individuals who commercially traffick people against their will,” says Jason. Rescue: to free from confinement, danger or evil. The Demand Project has built relationships between VAST (Victim Advocate Support Teams) and key law enforcement agents across Oklahoma to assist in the rescue of trafficked victims. Restoration: to bring back into existence. “Rescuing a victim from sexual exploitation is only the beginning of an extensive process for a victim to become a survivor,” said Kristin. “Donated community resources are imperative to successful survivor recovery once they transition out of a shelter and reintegrate into the community. We educate, find transitional housing, and teach victims a trade.” If you are interested in becoming a supporter of The Demand

Do You Want It Done Right? Dun-Rite Roofi ng has offered complete quality roofi ng services for 22 years.

By Christopher Davis

Oklahoma is known for its extreme temperatures. Currently, we are in the midst of another scorching summer. Such persistent heat can wreak havoc on roofs. Within a month or two, torrential thunderstorms will reveal any damage done over the summer, only to be followed by the threat of ice and snow. In order to rest easy during the fall and winter, call in the experts at DunRite Roofing. Owner Jim Murr and his crew will ensure your home or business is prepared for the impending weather changes so you don’t have to break out the tarps and buckets. Based in Owasso, Jim Murr started Dun-Rite in 1992, providing roofing services for mostly “new construction” home builders. He and his small crew earned a reputation for quality work and, before long, found themselves providing roofs for both new

construction and complete tear off and roof replacements, including wind and hail repair, as well as seamless guttering. Now, Murr coordinates several crews who can address almost any roof-related project. Dun-Rite covers a large swath of Green Country from their Owasso office and warehouse.

Murr notes, “We take clients as far out as Grand Lake.” Oklahomans have seen record-setting heat in recent years, and drought conditions are not improving, according to the national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The trend has been longer stretches of heat waves

punctuated by short bursts of heavy rain. Excessive heat can inflict damage on rooftops. Murr points out that once shingles begin to warp, roofs are prone to further damage later on. “Once there is a way for the rain to seep down, underneath the shingles, it can get bad quickly,” he says. Given that when it does rain, it rains hard, homes and businesses with unchecked damage in shingles can spell disaster. Further, once the storm season settles in, the ways in which rooftops suffer damage only increase. “All it takes is for a fallen branch to break through or a small patch of shingles to blow off during a storm,” Murr says. If damaged shingles go unrepaired, winter weather will make matters worse. Once

rogers county

Page 23

moisture seeps beneath shingles, routine freeze cycles will cause deeper, more significant damage to rooftop structures and even walls and electrical systems. The expansion of frozen water in building materials compromises durability, and it does not take long for rot to set in. The sooner action is taken, the less costly the repairs will be. Contact Murr and his crew for an honest assessment of your roof’s status. During consultation, Dun-Rite will provide thorough information about various shingles and materials, as well as explain related topics like aesthetic, budget and energy conservation. Once materials are selected and a job is planned out, Murr says, it usually takes a single day to complete. Dun-Rite understands the value of time and is committed to their customers’ satisfaction. Dun-Rite has a solid track record of delivering stellar service. The Better Business Bureau gives them an A+ rating. If you are not confident your roof is prepared for winter, then the time is perfect to schedule a visit from Dun-Rite.

Time for Back-to-School Eye Exams diately drawn to a zebra in the middle of the lobby. Obviously, this is not a typical vision center. But, before customers can even approach the zebra for a closer look, they are greeted by staff. The vibe is cheery, not stuffy. Laughing is commonplace in the lobby as customers peruse the displays of stylish frames, handpicked by Dr. Overstreet-Hogle. A few customers sit at colorful tables (hand-painted by the doctor and her mother) to try on potential favorites. Beyond the tables and displays is a kids’ corner with games, magazines and a DVD player to keep young ones occupied. There is a wide selection of children’s frames to choose from, ranging from popular brands to discounts at the bargain table. But catering to kids doesn’t stop in the lobby. Parents will be pleased to see Dr. Overstreet-Hogle has taken the same thoughtful approach to the exam room. Her love of the latest technology, and ability to use it, shines when it comes to pediatric optometry. Using a computer-based projector, the standard letter-based chart instantly switches to shapes. Even if a child is still uncomfortable with the ABCs, working through vision charts

is stress-free. The common thread that ties all the resources and technology together, of course, is Dr. Overstreet-Hogle herself. Leading by example, she and her team are welcoming, professional and thorough. Known for working long hours, she admits she has poured herself into making Advanced Vision Center an extension of her personality. She is always on the lookout for art and objects to decorate her store. “I love my job. I spend 90 percent of my time at this store,” she explains, adding that she strives to make Advanced Vision Care as fun and comfortable as possible. Most of the staff have been with her for years, and are extremely helpful when it comes to answering questions about various lenses and frames. “We’re like a bunch of sisters,” she says of her staff. “And, with all the relationships I build with my customers, it’s not work.” At Advanced Vision Center, customers will discover that choosing glasses or contacts doesn’t need to be work, either. Children and adults can count on the highest quality of care, the most stylish of frames and an environment that encourages them to

explore all their options. There is no doubt everyone who visits Dr. Abby Overstreet-Hogle will leave with a smile on their face. Find Big Fashion on Main Street build a wardrobe that will take you through the coming season and provide variety without draining your pocketbook. She suggests starting with foundation pieces, including a simple, versatile dress for special occasions, a few short-sleeved shirts and a couple of pairs of jeans or crops for casual wear, a jacket that goes with anything (she points out that army green will be big this year), a brown or black crossbody bag, an everyday flat or sandal, and a basic brown belt. Building on these pieces, you can change the look of your outfits by keeping several different colored tanks, printed scarves and

colorful jewelry to brighten things up. Madison also suggests purchasing a light wash chambray button down shirt that can be paired with denim or a pair of colored jeans, both of which will change things up from time to time. “By having each of these versatile pieces, you are able to mix and match them as you please. For instance, wearing the chambray shirt with a statement necklace and colored jeans shows that you are ready to take care of business!” says Madison. “By wearing the colored jeans with a simple tee, you look effortlessly stylish and ready for a fun day.” Madison also encourages ladies not to be afraid

again. “Plantar fasciitis is usually caused when the person does not get enough arch support,” says Tabitha. “It is particularly common in runners, but also among people who are carrying some extra weight or who wear shoes with inadequate support, like cheap flip flops.” Improper fitting shoes can cause other problems as well. For instance, if a person has very little or no arch in

Her work at the The District has been a main consideration as she has begun visiting with colleges about her future education. But most of all, she loves the interaction with the people who come to the shop. “I like helping people build a healthy self-image,” she says. “This has definitely broadened

This condition can cause knee and back problems and in fact, a person enduring these issues may not even realize that the source of the problems can be traced back to his or her feet. These examples display just how important it is to understand the human foot, and as the owner of a family shoe store, Tabitha feels it is important to concentrate on

the health of clients’ feet rather than just the style of the shoe. The store carries a wide variety of quality brands for the whole family, with a myriad of the latest styles to choose from, but the advantage of visiting Felts Shoes goes beyond just the esthetic. The staff at Felts is trained to understand the human foot and how best to take care of it. At Felts, your feet will be evaluated to find just the right fit for your specific problems or needs. Personal service is the top priority, and when you walk out of the store, they

want you to feel you are putting your “best feet forward.” “I like to tell customers they are the only feet you are going to get,” Tabitha says, “so you have to take care of them.”

Experience the beauty and richness of Native American culture when the Intertribal Indian Club of Tulsa (IICOT) hosts the 37th annual Pow Wow of Champions August 8-10, 2014. The dance is located at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center, 7777 S. Lewis in Tulsa. The Mabee Center will come alive in a colorful expression of dance, drum music and song as members of tribal nations throughout the country gather together to honor, strengthen and share traditions with each other and the general public. The dance spectator area will be held in air conditioned comfort. Over 300 dancers, dressed in full Native American dance clothes, will participate throughout the weekend in ceremonies and dances, including Grand Entries, intertribal dances and dance competitions. sessions, led by the Eagle Staff and the United States flag carried by a Native American Color Guard. The procession of dignitaries and dancers is a brilliant and constantly moving sea of color circling the arena to the rhythmic beat of drum and song. It is a photographers’ paradise; watching the Grand Entry is exciting and awe-inspiring. It is impossible not to move with

the rhythm of the drum and be caught up in the energy. In the competitive sessions, dancers use the whole arena to exhibit their skills with grace and finesse while attempting to catch the judges’ eyes with their personal style, footwork falling on the beat of the music, and striking dance clothes. The Pow Wow of Champions will also feature an Arts and Crafts Mart with an excellent selection of traditional and contemporary jewelry, artwork, beadwork, paintings, and quality handcrafted items, rarely seen in one location. Traditional foods will be a prominent part of this annual pow wow. Fry bread, meat pies, and Indian tacos will be available, as well as many other tempting and tasty items. Step back into time – there is plenty of Free Parking. A souvenir program book that includes information on the different dance styles will be

available for purchase. The doors will open at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 8 with dancing beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, August 9 and Sunday, August 10, the doors will open at 11 a.m. with dancing beginning at noon. The Pow Wow of Champions is a family event, and is an alcohol and drug free event. Tickets are available at the door the days of the event. others, “Hydrants of Hope” was born. With the support of others, including fellow firefighters, the non-profit charity has raised $38,000 so far, with all money going directly to families with children battling cancer. From the sale of T-shirts, lapel pins, key chains, wrist bands and jelly bracelets through www.hydrantsofhope.com, Mark gladly donates every penny to the cause. Mark’s own cancer story began in March of 2012, when he went for his yearly annual. A lump in his abdomen turned out to be a 32-pound tumor. His journey to healing led him from Tulsa to Houston, and eventually New York, where a surgeon removed the Stage 4 sarcoma. However, it had metastasized, so he’s still in the battle. Two trips to Germany for more surgery and recent treatments at a Cyberknife cancer center in Tulsa haven’t diminished Mark’s enthusiasm for living and for helping children. On September 16, he is hosting a golf tournament at Heritage Hills in Claremore, with all proceeds going to Hydrants of Hope. “My goal,” he says, “is to raise $50,000.” To meet that goal, Mark is seeking 92 people, which is the club limit, to pay a $100 entry fee to participate in the day’s fun. “The sooner you register, the better,” he adds. “The slots are filling up fast.” The cut-off date for registration is September 1, and each participant will receive a free tournament T-shirt and lunch afterward. To liven up the tournament, there will be prizes and an opportunity to win a percentage of the money pot in a poker tourney. “The golfer with the best five-card hand will win,” says Mark. “We want to get more people excited about the tournament and help the charity.” Sponsors are also needed. Businesses can sponsor a tee box or a hole box for $100. In return, their company logo will appear on a posted sign at a designated box. For $250, a business receives both a tee box and a hole box advertisement and will be included on the promotional banner and other materials. For a $500 donation, a business receives the above as well as being included on the back of the tourney T-shirts. All donations are taxdeductible. Sponsor deadline is September 1.

BBring Beauty to Your World Village Salon and Day Spa offers a full menu of hair and salon services, makeup, and clothing boutique.

By Lorrie Ward

As owner of Village Salon and Day Spa in Claremore, Chrissy Barney understands that women want and deserve to feel beautiful, and she strives to create an atmosphere where they can have a well-rounded, relaxing experience at the hair salon. Not only is Village a full service hair salon, offering a complete menu of salon services – cuts (men and children’s cuts are also available), styling, foils, color, extensions, facial waxing, facials, eyelash extensions, and inch loss wraps – but they also offer a full line of mineral makeup, Glo Minerals. This popular makeup line offers all the benefits of mineral makeup with less effort than many other brands, as it can be applied in just one coat without a primer and can be purchased in liquid form. Clients will also

love the Gypsy Girl Boutique, a new and ever-growing part of the Village Salon and Day Spa.

Chrissy goes to market every year, searching for stylish articles of clothing and accessories for the

boutique section. “We recently added handbags to our selection, and I’m always looking for new

Page 27

things,” says Chrissy. “It just keeps growing and growing and growing!” Chrissy also has plans to host an online store in the future, and clients will be able to purchase gift certificates through the site. But even an online presence will surely not stop people from wanting to live the full salon experience at Village Salon and Day Spa. “We’ve decorated in colors that are both soothing and cheerful,” says Chrissy. “We strive for an atmosphere that is welcoming and relaxed, yet professional.” Chrissy has been in the salon industry for 18 years. She started in Wagoner and came to work at Village three years ago. She bought the salon in November of 2012 and has loved being a part of its growth. “I like talking to and being with people,” she says with a smile. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” The Village Salon and Day Spa is open Monday through Saturday. Early and late appointments are available, and walk-ins are always welcome to accommodate today’s busy lifestyle.

not be accomplished by sitting on the couch and talking. The best way to get the word out and raise money for research is to go out in the streets and raise awareness. And what better way to take it to the streets than on a bicycle? Such thinking is what inspired the first event more than 30 years ago. Will Munger, executive director of the Minnesota Chapter of the MS Society, took his 10-yearold son to ride their bikes home to Minneapolis from

for a Cure

Bike MS: The Mother Road Ride 2014 is set for September 20-21. By Christopher Davis

The National MS Society educates, inspires and empowers those affected by multiple sclerosis. With an emphasis on mobilizing people and resources to drive research for a cure, the society is one of the largest organizations that advocates on behalf of those affected by the disease. In short, the National MS Society works toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. On September 20 and 21, the society invites everyone to join the cause and participate in Bike MS: The Mother Road Ride 2014, which takes place in Chandler. With local chapters in every state, the society is the largest and most impactful MS-advocate in America. According to the National Health Council, an independent organization that rates charitable entities, the National MS So-

ciety “funds more multiple sclerosis (MS) research and provides more programs for people with MS and their families than any other voluntary health organization in the world.” It is estimated that the society advocates on behalf of more than a third of the million families living with MS. Such an impact, however, can-

Will’s father’s house in Duluth. The two did not make it home in one day and ended up spending the night in a small town about halfway to their destination. When they arrived in Minneapolis the next day, Will figured that if two novice bicyclists like himself and his son could ride 150 miles in two days, it could be a good challenge for others, as well as a fun way to raise funds for the National MS Society. In 1980, 200 cyclists participated in the first Bike MS (formerly

known as the MS Bike Tour or MS 150) from Minneapolis to Duluth, raising $33,000 for the Minnesota Chapter. In 1981, other National MS Society chapters around the country began holding their own Bike MS rides when they heard of the success in Minnesota. By 1985, the society had adopted the ride as an “official” event to be held in every chapter. Today, Bike MS is their most successful fundraising campaign and is held in every state. On September 20 and 21, the Oklahoma holds its local event in Chandler. Bike MS: The Mother Road Ride 2014 is presented by Sam’s Club and challenges participants to 150 miles of Oklahoma. Registration is $50 per rider, and the start and finish location is at the Lincoln County Agri-Civic Center, located at 1179 W. 15th St. in Chandler.

Steak Cook-Off Beefed up for 2014 Nearly 4,000 steaks will be prepared in downtown Tulsa August 22-23. Proceeds will benefit TYPros’ community partner, the Tulsa Zoo.

By Sheryl Sowell

Tulsa’s Young Professionals is partnering with the Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off to bring the Steak Cookoff Association’s U.S. Steak Championship to downtown Tulsa in a two-day steak, music and beer festival benefitting TYPros’ 2014 community partner, the Tulsa Zoo. The Aug. 22-23 festival, which also includes the sixth annual Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off, will summon the top steak cooks to compete in teams for the state and national championships. The event will feature Oklahoma’s largest steak dinner, live music, beer, a car show and numerous children’s activities in an area centered on Sixth Street and Cincinnati Avenue. “We are thrilled to join forces with one of the nation’s largest young professional organizations to bring one of the nation’s largest celebrations of steak to the heart of Tulsa,” said Tripp Haggard, executive director of the Oklahoma Championship Steak

(L to R): Paul White and Tripp Haggard of the Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-off, TYPros Executive Director Shagah Zakerion, and TYPros volunteer Nick Karlovich.

Cook-Off. “The state cook-off has brought thousands of steak lovers to downtown Tulsa for years. With the addition of the national

championship and top chefs from around the country, needless to say, we’ve beefed up the competition.” About 30 teams will cook steaks cut fresh on site for a chance to win the national championship Friday, Aug. 22, and about 70 teams will compete Saturday for the state championship. In all, nearly 4,000 steaks – about two tons – will be cooked. For the general public, $20 admission includes steak

and side dishes. The festival will include outdoor performances by a dozen bands headlined by Desert Noises

and Alaska and Madi, a car and bike show on Boston Avenue and vendors. In addition, beer and food trucks will be on hand Friday evening, while family-friendly activities – including a kids’ zone – will round out Saturday’s festivities. More information about activities and advanced ticket sales can be found at www. oksteakcookoff.com. Event organizers will donate 70 percent of their proceeds to the Tulsa Zoo as part of the TYPros Community Partner program, which raises money for a different nonprofit organization each year. TYPros selected the zoo this year with the goal of helping it implement its new master plan. With thousands of people expected to attend the festival, proceeds for the zoo could top $30,000, organizers said. That would make it the largest single fundraiser in the five-year history of TYPros’ Community Partner program. “We’ve been helping nonprofit organizations realize their dreams for five years through our Community Partner program, but this festival takes it to another level,” TYPros Executive Director Shagah Zakerion said. “With help from our fellow Tulsans, we believe this event can make meaningful progress toward the Tulsa Zoo’s dream of becoming a world-class attraction. We thank the Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off for joining us in this worthy cause.” Terrie Correll, CEO of Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc., said:

“Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc., is grateful to our community partner, TYPros, and to all of the sponsors, organizers and supporters of the cook-off. All funds raised for the zoo will benefit Building Beyond Your Wildest Dreams, our capital campaign to complete our Lost Kingdom Exhibit Complex, which will include the Helmerich Tiger Exhibit, Hardesty Snow Leopard Habitat, Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation Red Panda/Binturong Exhibit and Aviary, and The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation Outdoor Siamang Habitat.” The Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-Off will also donate 30 percent of the proceeds to its community Garden Project. Tulsa’s Young Professionals, one of the nation’s largest young professional organizations, is division of the Tulsa Regional Chamber and a volunteer-based free membership organization for working and creative adults under the age of 40. Its mission is to attract and retain young talent in the Tulsa region while establishing Tulsa’s next generation of business and community leaders.
