Car Country Rises Above Competition Two-year, 24,000-mile warranty means great service doesn’t end when you leave the lot. By Christopher Davis “We’re revolutionizing the buyhere, pay-here concept,” says Alex Sordo, general manager at Car Country. What sets Car Country apart is not only the stellar service, great prices and simple financing, but the fact that this service continues well after a pur-
chase has been made and the smiling customer drives away. The key is a two-year, 24,000-mile warranty, included free with every vehicle purchase at a Car Country dealership. This isn’t a warranty that a salesman will casually tack on just

Relief for Students Sporting Injuries Dr. Brad Lawson volunteers his services for several local sports teams. By Wynne Marsh Friday night football is here. The stadium lights are coming on, and our kids are running onto the football field once again. The temperature is starting to change, and the atmosphere and support that fills a community around their teams on Friday nights has finally returned. For some, the return of football is an exciting and exhilarating time. However, with the collision nature of the sport, the return of football can also mean challenging injuries, concussions, and (continued on page 28)

Rollercoasters, Tilt-A-Whirls, and Merry-Go-Rounds BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Whee! While an exciting adrenaline rush at the state fair, this upsidedown, twist around, chug to the top, and scream to the bottom routine is not investors’ idea of a good time. When it comes to your money, I bet it makes you sick at your stomach too! Unfortunately, I believe volatility is not going away. While the markets have chugged their way up from the bottom, we will eventually see them scream downward again. As John F. Kennedy once said, “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” Well folks, the sun is shining right now in the markets. However, you need to be on the lookout for future storms. The best time to prepare your investment strategy and repair your roof is now. So, how exactly do we go about that, you may ask? Well, to begin with, you need to know what investments you own and why. Once you have assessed that, you need to research if that is where you need to be right now in this current economic environment.
Next, you need to develop a sell-side strategy: a plan for when and why you will sell the investment you are in. It is not an effective investment strategy to simply ride the investment rollercoaster up and then down again. Around and around and around is not so great either. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “People only see what they are prepared to see.” I believe that no matter what happens in the markets or economy, opportunities are available if you look deep enough. So get prepared. Develop a plan. Research opportunities. If you don’t know how or don’t particularly need an additional full time job managing your own investments, hire some-
one who does. Find someone you trust who is the best at what they do. Notice I didn’t say your co-worker in the next cubical or your brother-inlaw who is a plumber. When you need brain surgery, you don’t shop for the cheapest mediocre doctor you can find. You search for the best! Your money deserves the best, too! So search for one who really knows what they are doing, who will sit down with you a couple of times a year eyeball to eyeball. Find one that understands your situation who will stand toe to toe with you when you want to make a bad decision. If not, you may find yourself at the state fair getting brain surgery while riding a tilt-a-whirl from a mediocre investment advisor. Gum Disease Linked to Many Health Conditions Reasons why you shouldn’t make the mistake of avoiding the dentist. By Steve White, D.D.S Some of the earliest signs of serious health problems can be seen in your mouth long before they are evident anywhere else. There is also growing evidence that disease in the mouth, gum disease in particular, makes it more likely a patient will acquire or already has diabetes, heart disease, the potential for strokes, pneumonia, or complications during pregnancy. Your mouth is the gateway for food entering the digestive system. Unfortunately, it can also be the entry for bacteria entering the blood stream and contributing to serious medical conditions. It has been shown that
the same inflammatory process present in gum disease can be found elsewhere in the body in other disease states. Diabetes is becoming more prevalent in our society, largely due to our stressed-out lifestyles and obesity. Proper diet and regular exercise are always recommended in treating diabetes. But studies also show that treating gum disease can lower the amount of insulin a patient needs to control it. Gum disease during pregnancy does not get the attention it deserves. It has been linked to still births, premature births and lower birth weight babies. During pregnancy, the gums are more susceptible to the inflammatory response of gum disease. Therefore, they swell and bleed more easily. If anything, pregnant women should be seen more often for dental cleanings during pregnancy to avoid harm to the baby, rather than putting off dental appointments until after the baby is born. You will more likely have a full-term, healthier baby by following this simple choice.
Space does not allow indepth discussion of other health issues and their links to gum disease. Suffice it to say that many have been discovered and probably many others are yet to be. People often use the excuse that they can’t come to the dentist because they don’t have dental insurance. The fact is, the best insurance to avoid dental problems as well as other medical conditions is to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. The costs for these services are less than you would pay for insurance premiums in a year. Don’t make conditions worse and more expensive by avoiding regular checkups. This Ad Sponsored By:

EEase Your Aches and Pains
The Jacuzzi® Hydrotherapy Shower offers fun and relaxation for young and old alike. It includes four ShowerPro™ jets that focus on the neck, back, hips and knees, and may help ease the discomfort of arthritis, diabetes, aches and pains, neuropathy, sciatica, andinflammation.
By Sheryl Sowell
Greg Wolter is president and founder of Community Builders, Inc., headquartered in Tulsa with offices in Oklahoma City and Little Rock. The company is known throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas as quality home remodeling experts. Community Builders is not a general contractor; their specialties include energy-efficient composite siding, replacement windows, gutter guard systems, sunrooms and metal roof systems. They also specialize in the installation of safe and affordable walk-in tubs and walk-in showers. As we age, the occasional aches and pains of everyday life become less and less occasional. Most of us are bothered by sore muscles, creaky joints and general fatigue as we go through the day – and it’s made worse by everything from exertion and stress to arthritis. “Sure, there are pills and creams that claim to provide comfort,” says Greg, “but there is only one 100 percent natural way to feel better, and that is hydrotherapy. The world leader in hydrotherapy has invented
the only shower that features Jacuzzi® jets. It’s called the Jacuzzi® Hydrotherapy Shower, and it can truly change your life.” They’ve thought of everything, from the four exclusive Jacuzzi® jets that target problem areas to the comfortable and adjustable seat to strategically-placed grab bars and lots
of storage. “This shower truly has it all,” adds Greg. The four Jacuzzi® ShowerPro™ jets focus on the neck, back, hips and knees, and may help ease the discomfort of arthritis, diabetes, aches and pains, neuropathy, sciatica, and inflammation. For over 50 years, the design engineers at Jacuzzi® Inc. have worked to bring the power-
ful benefits of soothing hydrotherapy into millions of homes. Now, they’ve created a system that can replace your existing bathtub or shower and give you a lifetime of enjoyment, comfort and pain relief. The shower fits in place of your existing bath or shower, the seat can be mounted in one of three positions, and it’s
easily accessible when seated or standing. The high gloss acrylic surface is also easy to clean. Greg serves on the National Board of Advisors for GE Home Improvement Lending. His company is a professional organization that has been recognized nationally with the Business Ethics Award presented by the National Association of Siding and Window Dealers. You can review their stellar record with the BBB and the Greater Tulsa Home Builders Association. Community Builders is eager to earn your business and trust.

HHistory Is In the Air
The Commemorative Air Force hosts Wings Over Tulsa and the 13th annual Big Band Hangar Dance on November 8. By Christopher Davis
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 8, and plan on attending the Commemorative Air Force Spirit of Tulsa Squadron’s Wings Over Tulsa and the 13th annual Big Band Hangar Dance. The CAF’s mission is to keep aviation history alive through the acquisition, restoration and preservation of combat aircraft. Talk to Col. Robert Prater about any of the planes in the hangar or in one of the many pictures hung in the office, and you will get a history lesson even better than a college course could offer. He explains how a particular model was used to transport injured soldiers and how another was part of a batch sold by the United States to the French for their effort in North Africa.
Col. Bob Prater in the hangar with restorations in progress.
It’s enough to leave one reeling from the incredible, sometimes overlooked, details involved in the early years of aircraft design. As a curator of many restored combat aircraft, the CAF participates in air shows across the country. The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron is no different, and proudly shows its World War II era Fairchild PT19 around the region. When it’s not showing off, it rests in the CAF hangar at Jenks-Riverside Airport. Additionally, the CAF honors combat veterans by providing flights in the very planes they have restored. “It is important to us to give something back to our veterans, and this is our way of saying thanks,” adds CAF Spirit of Tulsa Squadron Colonel Bob
Prater. However, flights in a World War II era PT-19 are not reserved exclusively for veterans. The CAF sells flight tickets to the general public as a fundraiser. This month, the public will have a special opportunity to ride in the PT-19 and support the CAF. On Saturday, November 8, the CAF Spirit of Tulsa Squadron will hold its biggest event of the year with a full day of activities. The day begins with Wings Over Tulsa. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Spirit of Tulsa Squadron will provide free honor flights for WWII veterans and rides to the public (with purchase of flight ticket). There will also be plenty of exhibits featuring vintage WWII memorabilia, military vehicles,
model aircraft and more. Attendees are invited to tour the facility, learn about the history of aircraft and vehicles, and bid in a silent auction. Daytime admission is free for all ages. Flight passengers must be 12 years or older. As the afternoon wraps up, attendees will move into the hangar for the Big Band Hangar Dance, officially kicking off the 13th annual soirée. The 18-piece Sounds of Music Orchestra will provide the soundtrack for the evening, performing 1940s-era music. The Big Band Hangar Dance has become a favorite amongst swing dancers, with several troupes attending every year from around the country. Free swing dance lessons will be provided from 6 to 7 p.m.
Recommended attire is casual, military or vintage. There will be great opportunities for photographs and a chance to pick up some vintage memorabilia at the PX, Vintage Store and the silent auction – all for the worthy cause of preserving our history and educating the public.

Medicare Part D M Made Easy
how much you are spending on prescription drugs and your monthly income. Medicare Assistance Program Coordinator Cindy Loftin says everyone should review their prescription drug coverage each year. “Even if your current plan has served you well this year, the plan’s formulary, benefits and/or plan costs will probably be changing in 2015. In many cases there may also be a different plan available that better meets your needs.” That’s why it is important to sit down with a counselor to review your needs. During last year’s Open Enrollment Period, 67 percent of the people LIFE assisted either enrolled in a Part D drug plan for the first time or switched their Part D plans for 2014. In doing so, almost all of them saved money on their 2014 drug costs, with an average savings of almost $1,600 per person. Part D plans range from $15.70 a month to $140.90 a month. Some people who meet limited income and resources guidelines can apply for the Extra Help/Low-Income Subsidy (LIS). Through this federal assistance program, most of their drug plan costs will be paid by the government. “Some people may have been eligible for years, but never applied,” says Cindy. “Or someone may have a loved one who is going without their medicine.” “Our Medicare Assistance

To anyone who is on Medicare, few things are more confusing or overwhelming than the 31 choices for stand-alone prescription drug coverage in Oklahoma for the year 2015. These plans, known as Medicare Part D, can meet your prescription drug needs or leave you without. They can cost you money or save you money. The Medicare Assistance Program at LIFE Senior Services can help you make the best choice. From October 15 through December 7, a period known as the Medicare Open Enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to make any changes to their health and drug coverage. This coverage will become effective January 1, 2015. Whether you are enrolling for the first time, considering a change in your drug plan or uncertain what to do, knowledgeable Medicare counselors can help you make the right decision for your situation. They will take into account whether you have current drug coverage. If you are enrolled in an HMO or PPO, you do not need a stand-alone Part D plan. They will also consider dosages,

GGreatest Story Ever Told The 16th annual Bethlehem Walk, a free guided outdoor walk through an exciting and realistic nativity, will be held December 4-7 at Christview Christian Church. By Sheryl Sowell Christview Christian Church, located at 2525 S. Garnett, is pleased to present the 16th annual Bethlehem Walk to the Tulsa community. The Bethlehem Walk is a 45-minute guided outdoor walking tour through an exciting and realistic nativity scene. The path is lighted, and golf carts are available for those who are handicapped or disabled. Performances will be held December 4 and 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and December 6 and 7 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The presentation features a cast of more than 150 authentically dressed Roman soldiers, beggars, lepers, heavenly angels, shepherds, and Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child. The church maintains a costume room with hundreds of costumes made as authentically as possible. Live camels, sheep and donkeys add to the authenticity of the greatest story ever told. Reservations are requested, and large groups are welcome. Admission is free. The Bethlehem Walk attracts thousands of attendees each year from a six-state area. Individuals and groups congregate in the church’s auditorium. Everyone is assigned to a family and a guide who is also the “family head.” Some participants will be
given Roman coins with which to pay taxes as they enter Nazareth. You may even be hassled by Roman guards along the road as you march to Bethlehem. You will soon figure out, everyone becomes part of the production. A tax collector receives your family’s taxes, and your family representative will be asked to “make his mark” in the record book. Don’t try to hold back any coins for yourself – tax collectors can get nasty! Along your route, you will encounter angels with silvery white robes and shepherds kneeling in fields. You will visit three wise men and their camels, and will be asked if you have seen the star in the east. As you enter the bazaar, you will enjoy tasting some of the food samples. The bazaar area houses several shops with baskets, jewelry, fruit and nuts, rugs and more. Half the fun of the evening is interacting with the characters, especially when the shepherds invite you to join them at their camp to enjoy their nice warm fire. As you journey on, you will likely see beggars and lepers. Please don’t touch! To do so is “punishable by death.” You will discover that there are no rooms available in Bethelem.
Experience the true story of Christmas at Christview Christian Church’s Bethlehem Walk, a free outdoor walk through a living nativity. One innkeeper announces that he actually put up a man and his wife with child in a stable down the street. It was the last available vacancy in the city. Near the end of your walk, you will fast-forward 33 years as you encounter three crosses on a hillside and visit the tomb area where the body of Christ the Savior has gone missing. An angel will appear and read from the scripture. At the conclusion of your walk, you are invited back to Fellowship Hall, where you will visit homes and courtyards of ancient times. Children may make a fabric doll,
play games, and pet farm animals, while everyone is welcome to enjoy cider and cookies. The evening is entertaining and educational for all, plus a tremendous outreach to the Tulsa community by Christview Christian Church. The reservation hotline is (918) 232-3587 starting November 19. Operators are on duty from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening, or you may send a text message anytime and an operator will contact you and schedule your time. Please advise the operator if someone in your group is disabled and will need a golf cart.
You may also visit the website, click the Special Events link, and make your reservation.

YYou’ll Be Floored by the Selection Hundreds of low-cost choices are available at Mill Creek Flooring Outlet. By Duane Blankenship
Stop in at Mill Creek Flooring Outlet and visit with Manager John Hutton.
Mill Creek first opened doors for business in 1934. Headquartered in Tulsa, the company is still family-owned with locations in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. “Mill Creek is the region’s largest and best known center for home improvement,” says Mill Creek Flooring Outlet Manager John Hutton. “The Flooring Outlet supplies carpet, engineered hardwood, laminate flooring, light fixtures, roll vinyl (linoleum), vinyl planks and squares. We also stock tile for floors and walls including ceramic and natural stone.” The Flooring Outlet sells to homeowners and commercial patrons and carries lots of brand-name products at very attractive prices. “Basically, the Mill Creek Flooring Outlet functions to liquidate overages, remnants and overstocked products from our main retail stores,” said John, “and many of those items are name brands.” They have tons of carpet remnants that may be perfect for your home improvement project. “Many of our customers are
putting new flooring in just one room. Some own rental properties,” said John, “and some buy and ‘flip’ homes. Many of our high quality products are sold at 50 percent off and some, available in limited quantities, are marked down up to 80 percent off.” When you shop the Flooring Outlet, you’re going to find a lot of selection all under one roof. Just keep in mind that many of the products will be available only in remnants or smaller quantities. John says inventories at the Mill Creek Flooring Outlet change weekly. Store personnel will help you load your materials, but you must provide the trailer or truck and tie-downs. “If you’re not a do-it-yourselfer, we can recommend a professional installer to get your project done,” said John. When you choose professional help for your project, they will generally pick up your materials, deliver them to the work site and do the installation. Store hours for the Mill Creek Flooring Outlet are Monday through Thursday
from 9 to 6 and Friday and Saturday from 9 to 5. The Mill Creek Flooring Outlet takes pride in their knowledgeable, experienced showroom sales staff. They represent many years in the flooring business and are eager to assist you with qualified advice on your project and make recommendations they believe you will enjoy. “We love to assist area homeowners who are seeking a great value as they begin their home remodeling project to provide comfort, style and visual appeal to their home for many years to come,” said John.

Non-Drug Therapy Solution for Depression Strength of Mind Behavioral Health successfully utilizes Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to help wake up the brain.
By Duane Blankenship
Dr. Jeff McIlroy is the founder and chief of psychiatry for Strength of Mind Behavioral Health. He has been in practice for 24 years and is board certified in both general and geriatric psychiatry. Dr. McIlroy obtained his undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry from Oklahoma Christian University, and his medical degree and psychiatry residency through the University of Oklahoma. After venturing into private practice, Dr. McIlroy recognized the need for a more comprehensive and multi-disciplinary organization that would better meet community needs in mental health. This led to his founding of Strength of Mind in 2004. The Christian-based practice has grown from an organization of two providers and a secretary to one of 27 providers with a support and administrative team of over 15. Dr. McIlroy is the medical director of psychiatry at
the geriatric inpatient hospital units in Claremore, Henryetta, Cushing and Idabel, OK. He is also the medical director for the outpatient and crisis stabilization programs with Green Country Behavioral Health Services in Muskogee. His private practices are at the Claremore and Tulsa/ Broken Arrow/Pryor office complexes. Strength of Mind has patients ranging from 5 to 105 years of age and is dedicated to making psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible throughout our area. “By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, we aim to meet a variety of patients’ needs regardless of their age,” said Dr. McIlroy. “We were the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation).” TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depres-
sion. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain compelling neurons to start firing, leading to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while lifting moods and encouraging ambition. Research shows that while physical activity is a powerful tool in treating depression, it is usually the last thing a depressed brain wants a person to do. This leads to listlessness, inactivity, and staying out of shape. “Our one-on-one therapeutic fitness gets the body moving and boosts the recovery process,” said Dr. McIlroy. TMS therapy has many advantages including no medical side effects, the patient is fully awake during treatments, and results are known definitely within four to six weeks. “Our team strives to partner with you in your journey to regain your quality of life, restore

BBring Home the Heat Place your order with Cajun Ed’s for a “Big Easy” holiday feast. By Christopher Davis
Those in search of heat for their holiday feast need look no further than Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats. Serving as Tulsa’s portal to Louisiana cuisine, Ed “Cajun Ed” Richards’ restaurant offers authentic Cajun-style meats, sauces and more. Holidays are filled with friends, family and food. Every tradition, though, can benefit from spicing things up from time to time. Maximize family time by bringing home the finest Cajun-style cuisine around. Take the guesswork out of recipes and order from a selection of turducken, ham, beef tenderloin and much more. Without a doubt, the crown jewel of Cajun Ed’s holiday menu is their famous turducken. For the uninitiated, the turducken represents the ultimate main course. The dish features a deboned turkey with a deboned duck stuffed inside, with a deboned chicken inside of that. All three birds are filled with pork sausage and cornbread dressing and seasoned with a special blend of Cajun
Ed “Cajun Ed” Richards invites you to try the turducken, pecan pie and all the fixin’s.
spices. The result is a savory delight with a hint of heat, without an ounce of dry meat. Cajun Ed’s prepares meat and seafood orders and packages them in vacuum-sealed bags. All the customer has to do is pick up their order and place
the meat in the oven. There are plenty of sides and desserts to choose from to compliment your main course, too. Favorites like broccoli cheese casserole, cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole and andoille cornbread dressing are amongst
the many options on the menu. Desserts include key lime pie, pecan pie, chocolate ganache pie and more. Everything is made from scratch, using authentic recipes brought directly to Tulsa by Cajun Ed himself. Of course, there are more exotic items that are found only in Cajun culinary circles. For instance, alligator meat is available on the menu and for special order. If gator ribs sound a bit intimidating, consider trying the Cajun frog legs. And it wouldn’t be a Cajun restaurant without crawfish. In fact, every May, they put on a crawfish festival, complete with live music in the parking lot. Initially a specialty store focused on shipping quality meats, Cajun spices and related food items across the country, Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats eventually expanded and moved to 2101 E. 71st St., where they reside today. The big red house afforded more room to meet the demands of increased shipping orders – an operation more extensive than one would think. The store is a USDA inspected facility, and that means a federal inspector is on site every day, working
alongside staff to ensure the highest quality is upheld. In addition, more space meant the store could expand to offer lunch dining, an instant hit with Tulsans and the many Louisiana transplants in the area. Several years ago, Ed expanded their dining hours to include dinner, and updated the menu to offer a variety of entrées that showcase the many types of meats and Cajun ingredients they are known for shipping nationally. Today, business is thriving at Cajun Ed’s. A large percentage of their business is still shipping online orders to restaurants and homes across the country. The dining room continues to fill up for lunch and dinner. As the holiday season brings colder weather, it seems everyone wants a taste of that Cajun heat to warm them up. This is the perfect time to stop by and experience firsthand the best Cajun food north of the bayou. For more information, contact

Your Space Intuitive creative designer Dana Daubenspeck imposes the artistic possibilities in your home or business space for the holidays and every day of the year.
By Deanna Rebro “I never would have dreamed my home (business) could look this good with all my own stuff!” Dana Daubenspeck of Dana & Associates...Reinventing hears this over and over from clients who call her to reinvent their living space. “I impose the creative artistic possibili-
ties in space. My artisans transform ordinary to extraordinary. My background is in beauty. I don’t sell materials, but take liberty with materials to create art in your home, office, yard, or event. For 27 years, I have collaborated with customers to refine areas into compositions that define them. I love undertaking any and every project that you may have

to facilitate it into a mirror of your character and statement of intent.” Dana is a unique designer in that she brings to the table the ability to listen, see and network all the treasures you have collected and the ones you may desire into your space. Although she works with clients to shop for new items, her specialty is taking what they already have and giving it a new presentation. Sometimes it’s moving things from one room to another, repainting a piece of furniture, adding in new purchases or changing a picture frame. “It’s establishing a new focal point.” Sometimes it’s redirecting focus from objectionable areas, wallpaper, wood paneling – anything that is no longer pleasing to you by calling new attention to areas for higher motivational usages. Through her nearly 30 years of design work, Dana has found treasures in closets and attics, under beds and in storage units. Longforgotten pieces have gotten a new lease on life. “My passion is taking what someone has and reinventing it,” she says. “I save clients a lot of money by showing them what can be done with what they have, revealing to them what they have not yet seen as a possibility.” Going through hidden areas is like peeling back layers of time in a person’s life. What was important to someone 10 years ago may have changed significance today. Everyone’s needs change with time as they move through transitions in their lives – turning children’s bedrooms into teen retreats, downsizing empty nests, simplifying solo living or transitioning to a retirement community. She walks clients through every step of the way. Her vast network of partner artisans provides endless resources for transforming every inch of indoor or outdoor
space. Then there are the pieces that someone bought years ago, or even yesterday, because they “had to have it” but have no clue what to do with it. Dana has a vision for moving it comfortably and appealingly into your space. “Even people with impeccable taste and great ideas have difficulty moving forward with their visions from time to time.” Dana hears the intention of where you want to go, and helps you and your space represent the same page. For example, blending households, just as she did in her own life earlier this year, gives her the welcome challenge of putting together pieces that people thought could never be put together in the same space. One client paid her the ultimate compliment: “Dana makes what seems impossible become possible beyond your expectations!” All of her work is on an individual, personalized basis, according to the client’s needs. There are no cookie-cutter specifications. What is important to the client is important to her. Some items deserve a special place of honor in a client’s home or business, and Dana has showcased many things over the years, from special collections and sentimental family heirlooms to war memorabilia and everything in between. According to Dana, a pleasing look is therapeutic to clients. When they see their furnishings in a different presentation, they seem to have a “reinvented” and refreshed appreciation of their environment. Everything is clean and organized, to the credit of fellow artisan, Angela Samuelson of All in the Details. They have peace of mind and are proud of their space with a revitalized view. They feel good about themselves too.
Many homeowners and realtors call Dana to present a home at its best before putting it on the market. “It has not been unusual for me to stage a house, and see it sell in less than a week,” she says. Emphasizing all the positive aspects often draws stronger offers that more than pay for the cost of staging. Of all the work Dana does, Christmas decorating is her favorite. She can decorate anything from one room for family gatherings to an entire house or entryway. Dana also has many commercial clients that appreciate her ability to turn their business space into a welcoming atmosphere for their customers. For many clients who call her year after year, her magical touch brings back memories of Christmases past with your grandma’s handmade ornaments, special treats you look forward to seeing for a short while every year. For others, she helps create memories for generations to come. What you have for memories sentimentally seen each year, and what you add to the memories is Dana’s fondest service to “reinvent” into your holiday traditions. Appointments are filling quickly for both homes and businesses. Call Dana & Associates...Reinventing now to book an appointment to decorate for Christmas, to reinvent a space or to stage a home. Low Impact Fitness for Whole Body Health Strength of Mind & Body offers yoga and pilates classes for gentle, effective workouts.
By Deanna Rebro The word “fitness” usually construes images of pushing, pulling, pumping and sweating. But it doesn’t have to be that way. At Strength of Mind & Body, fitness is achieved through yoga and pilates. Calm background music helps clients clear their minds of daily stress and focus on strengthening their bodies in a gentle, low impact manner. Sharon Haddaway, certified yoga instructor, works on focusing inward – not outward. Sharon teaches four yoga classes a week, where controlled breathing and distinct stances lead to greater flexibility, higher energy levels and deeper blood oxygenation. Sharon says clients have rediscovered levels of strength, energy and flexibility that they haven’t felt in years. “People who have said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,’ have found they can turn their necks while driving. They have an increased range of motion. They can do yard work. They can get a good night’s rest and wake up feeling refreshed.” Anybody can do yoga at nearly any age. There is nothing strenuous or competitive. Individuals come to class, limited to 10, and work at their own level. She started walking to relieve stress. The more she moved, the better she felt. When she discovered yoga, she knew this was a lifestyle for her that she wanted to share with others. Now she says her personal philosophy is, “The best is yet to come.” Much like Sharon, certified yoga and pilates instructor Cindy
Hoffman also began her quest for health and fitness after suffering a lumbar injury that left her in pain and unable to move freely. Exercises in traditional gyms only made the pain worse. But pilates was different. “Pilates strengthens all the muscles that support the spine,” she explains. That was 20 years ago. Now Cindy works with people who have had injuries. And she works with those who have poor posture and compressed spines from sitting in front of computers

Handmade Christmas ornaments and miniature fairy furniture as well as handcrafted baskets, pottery, and candles remind us of some of the many creative talents that can be found in our area. Garden signs, trellises and old English troughs take us back to the garden we so eagerly await during the winter months. The Tulsa World has called Carols & Crumpets “one of the more anticipated events of the holiday season.” It is a joy for members, participants and visitors alike. Car Country Rises Above Competition story about a car that went south on them, and struggled to make payments on a car that needed repairs. Car Country understands such anxiety, and strives to ensure that customers are not only completely satisfied with their car, but stay safe on the road and are able to keep up on monthly payments and build their credit. “Buying a car is the easy part,” says Sordo. “But, who is behind you when things go wrong?” With an in-house service facility located in Sapulpa, Car Country can assure customers that they will have your back if things go wrong. This means that, in the event your car breaks down, you won’t have to navigate a labyrinth of phone numbers and departments, only to be sent to a mechanic your dealership “contracts with.” All you have to do is call Car Country, and they will set you up with their team of
in-house technicians. A service team of seven fulltime technicians, three detailers and support staff is led by Service Manager Brian Knight, who has been with the company for five years. Knight has been running Car Country’s 20,000square-foot service facility since it opened in early 2012. Every car undergoes a 30-point inspection before arriving at a lot, so customers can remain confident that breakdowns will be rare. Sometimes, though, an unexpected event does occur. In difficult times, Car Country prides itself on helping customers. “We always work toward a solution,” says Sordo. “In this business, it’s tough to please everyone. We’re making an effort to do so.” After all, Car Country is in the business of keeping customers on the road. “We’re helping customers build their future, not judging
them on their past,” he adds. Car Country makes it easy to buy a car, basing finance decisions not on credit score, but on job, income and stability of customers. The company does, however, report to credit bureaus, which helps customers improve their credit score. With a website that features a straightforward pre-approval application, customers may also view inventory, which changes daily. There, customers can view a broad selection of cars, from a two-door Aveo to full-size SUVs. November and December is the perfect time to buy a car, too, Sordo adds, since they are building inventory in the lead-up to tax season, and there will be more choices than ever. For more information, follow them on Facebook. To experience the best customer service in the industry, drop by in person at any of their
five locations. Without a doubt, you will drive away in your next car and feeling safe, knowing Car Country has your back everywhere your car takes you.

BBeads that Bless The sale of Kairos 10 jewelry has allowed 30,000 malaria-preventing mosquito nets to be distributed in West Africa since 2010. By Sheryl Sowell
It is nearly impossible these days to turn on the news or have a conversation around the water cooler without the Ebola virus being brought up. Americans are becoming increasingly aware of this deadly virus since the first case of a patient diagnosed in the United States occurred last month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a serious outbreak of the
Ebola virus is currently infecting and killing thousands of people in West Africa. The outbreak’s ramifications, however, reach far beyond those infected with the virus. An extreme shortage of health care is occurring in West Africa, causing hospitals to become overcrowded and unable to treat patients suffering from the region’s number one killer – malaria. To illustrate, consider

this statistic from the World Health Organization (WHO): In Ghana, there are only 69,000 healthcare providers available to treat 24,233,431 people. According to Phyllis Morris, a registered nurse and co-founder of the non-profit organization Kairos 10, “People who have little or no immunity to malaria, including children under 5, pregnant women and the elderly, are more likely to die from the disease. Death rates among young children and pregnant women may actually increase because they are unable to receive treatment as hospitals are overwhelmed with Ebola patients.” Malaria is the top disease of morbidity in Ghana. It is caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans. People who get malaria are typically sick with high fevers, shaking chills and flu-like symptoms. “It is hard to believe that the number one cause of death for Ghanaians is both preventable and treatable,” says Phyllis. “Unfortunately so many are unable to receive treat-

ment because they cannot afford it, or the healthcare resources are simply not available to them. An insecticide-treated bed net, which 100 percent prevents malaria, costs over a week’s wage.” Phyllis, along with her husband, Dr. David Morris, and Katheryn and Charles Pennington, founded Kairos 10 after traveling to Ghana to conduct medical missions. They witnessed child after sick child with temperatures of 105 degrees, and they wanted to follow God’s prompting to “do something sustainable.” The basis of Kairos 10 is beautiful jewelry created by eight Ghanaian women. Beads produced from recycled glass and vinyl are purchased from Ghanaian bead merchants. Kairos then pays the Ghanaian women four times the minimum daily wage to make the jewelry. Funds from jewelry sales are used to purchase and distribute nets to families in several countries in West Africa, including Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Indonesia and India. Over 30,000 nets have been purchased and delivered from September 2010 through September 2014. Additional Kairos 10 monies have provided water wells, anti-malarial medications, medical clinic construction, and funding for a school building. distribute the nets and set up free clinics to help treat malaria as well as wounds, hypertension, measles, back pain, infections and more. They partner with Blessings International, a nationally recognized pharmacy, to provide quality anti-malarial medications. “Due to poverty, illiteracy, inadequate medical personnel, and the marginal nature of the health care system in West Africa, people – including young children – are dying from a preventable, treatable disease,” says Dr. Morris. “Our goal through Kairos 10 is to provide aid for the people of West Africa and offer sustainable solutions to help prevent sickness and death from malaria.” Kairos 10 jewelry is sold online and in several area retailers, including Catholic Book and Gift Store, Donna’s Fashions, Liv-a-Little Boutique, Pizzazzy Monograms, Raw Elements Salon and Willowbrush Studio. In addition, Kairos 10 will have a booth at An Affair of the Heart in Tulsa, November 21-23.

YYou’ll Have a Dickens of a Time Claremore Main Street hosts annual historic Christmas celebration November 21-22. By Carol Beck-Round Claremore Main Street will be kicking off the Christmas season with their annual Dickens on the Boulevard celebration featuring lots of family-friendly fun for everyone November 21-22 in historic downtown. Five of Claremore’s historic buildings will come alive on both nights with a guided 90-minute tour of the upper floors and “a slightly embellished story from Claremore’s past,” says Cindy Bissett, executive director of Claremore Main Street. “Participants on the ‘Tales from the Top’ tours will get to hear a story from a character that is closely associated with the building’s past as they portray their life in early-day Claremore. This year’s attendees will also get to participate in the first city council meeting that will be re-enacted based on documented minutes from that meeting, meet royalty who visited Claremore for the radium baths in 1906, and more.” Tours will begin promptly at 6 p.m. on both nights. Cost is $8 per person. Main Street will be roped off for dancing beginning at 8 both nights, including the polka and waltz as well as other Victorian-era dances. Bob Rollins will be calling the dances, such as the Virginia Reel. With the closing of
downtown to traffic, families can safely stroll, dance or ride by wagon down the historic main street beginning at 6. Businesses will be decorated for the holiday season during the free event. Many businesses will also be hosting open houses and keeping their stores open until 8 p.m. Shoppers can sign up for drawings and receive up to $100 in Dickens Dollars to spend at the participating merchants. “We’ll be giving away $300 to $400 each night,” says Cindy. Visitors will be transported back to the Victorian era with live storefront window displays. Individuals, donned in their extravagantly designed gowns and frock coats, will engage people strolling down the historic sidewalks. For those who want to participate in the action by wearing a costume, a contest will be held to determine the Best Dressed. Winners will receive prizes in the following categories: man, woman, couple, young man, young woman, boy and girl. Onstage entertainment by local groups will add to the festive scene. Children can also have their photos snapped with Santa Claus for $4. For those who want to use their own cameras, the cost is only $2. Other planned activities include a Territorial Marshals

games,” says Cindy. Victorian craftsmen will also be on site demonstrating their craft, including a wood turner, a blacksmith, a basket weaver and more. Regional authors will be available both nights to sign copies of their books at Boarding House books, located across from the Claremore Progress.

A total of four surgical specialties are part of the program including prostate, lung, colon and breast cancer. Dr. Saint has weekly consulting teleconferences with members of the MD Anderson staff.
