Celebrating 25 years in Citizens of District 3 Want Roll-Off the Real Estate Industry Containers Since opening in 1989, OklaHomes Realty, Inc. has seen dramatic changes, especially in the use of technology.

The REALTORS® of OklaHomes Realty (clockwise from left): Teresa Collins, Toni Fuson, Jim Courtney, Rose Ann McCaw-Ransom, Founding Partner Allen Stout, Cindy Ryan, Edd McGehee, Judy Cutsinger, Founding Partner Nell Clark, Bob Cutsinger, Tia Stout, Chris Peterson, Kathy Geyer, and Angela Doyle.

When Allen Stout opened the doors of his real estate office in 1989 with four other partners, he never envisioned the changes that would take place over the next 25 years. Since that time, he has become the sole owner of OklaHomes Realty, Inc., located at 2104 S. Hwy. 66. Initially, the company was called First Team Realtors and was comprised of what Stout calls “some of the best REALTORS® in Rogers County” who all had the same vision of being an outstanding group of professionals providing the public with uncompromising customer service. Although the company name and ownership has since changed, the vision is the same. “We follow the Golden Rule as stated in the Code of Ethics and (continued on page 24)

Ron Burrows, Republican candidate for Rogers County Commissioner District 3, plans to return the solid waste management program if elected. By Sheryl Sowell Ron Burrows is the Republican candidate for Rogers County Commissioner District 3. Throughout his campaign and during three public forums, Ron has repeatedly encountered a particular issue that numerous Rogers County citizens are concerned with – the availability of solid waste collection sites utiliz-

ing roll-off trash containers. The roll-off trash container program had been in place for more than a year when the current County Commissioner eliminated the program. Previously, three sites in District 3 (Inola, Catoosa and Claremore) each had a roll-off container in place (continued on page 24)

Honoring Veterans on November 11 MMS-Payne Funeral Home continues its seven-year tradition with salute to veterans and flag retirement ceremony. By Carol Beck-Round Continuing a tradition that started seven years ago, MMS-Payne Funeral Home is once again sponsoring Claremore’s annual Veterans Day parade, which will start promptly at 11:11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11. The parade line-up starts at the Claremore Expo Center and winds its way down Will Rogers Boulevard to the downtown Gazebo near First Baptist Church. According to Frank Friedemann, director of family services at MMSPayne, “Claremore’s Veterans Day parade is the second largest in northeastern Oklahoma. Our parade has grown since its beginning. We started with a 30-minute parade, but it now

Rollercoasters, Tilt-A-Whirls, and Merry-Go-Rounds BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Whee! While an exciting adrenaline rush at the state fair, this upsidedown, twist around, chug to the top, and scream to the bottom routine is not investors’ idea of a good time. When it comes to your money, I bet it makes you sick at your stomach too! Unfortunately, I believe volatility is not going away. While the markets have chugged their way up from the bottom, we will eventually see them scream downward again. As John F. Kennedy once said, “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” Well folks, the sun is shining right now in the markets. However, you need to be on the lookout for future storms. The best time to prepare your investment strategy and repair your roof is now. So, how exactly do we go about that, you may ask? Well, to begin with, you need to know what investments you own and why. Once you have assessed that, you need to research if that is where you need to be right now in this current economic environment.

Next, you need to develop a sell-side strategy: a plan for when and why you will sell the investment you are in. It is not an effective investment strategy to simply ride the investment rollercoaster up and then down again. Around and around and around is not so great either. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “People only see what they are prepared to see.” I believe that no matter what happens in the markets or economy, opportunities are available if you look deep enough. So get prepared. Develop a plan. Research opportunities. If you don’t know how or don’t particularly need an additional full time job managing your own investments, hire some-

one who does. Find someone you trust who is the best at what they do. Notice I didn’t say your co-worker in the next cubical or your brother-inlaw who is a plumber. When you need brain surgery, you don’t shop for the cheapest mediocre doctor you can find. You search for the best! Your money deserves the best, too! So search for one who really knows what they are doing, who will sit down with you a couple of times a year eyeball to eyeball. Find one that understands your situation who will stand toe to toe with you when you want to make a bad decision. If not, you may find yourself at the state fair getting brain surgery while riding a tilt-a-whirl from a mediocre investment advisor. EEase Your Aches and Pains

The Jacuzzi® Hydrotherapy Shower offers fun and relaxation for young and old alike. It includes four ShowerPro™ jets that focus on the neck, back, hips and knees, and may help ease the discomfort of arthritis, diabetes, aches and pains, neuropathy, sciatica, andinflammation.

By Sheryl Sowell

Greg Wolter is president and founder of Community Builders, Inc., headquartered in Tulsa with offices in Oklahoma City and Little Rock. The company is known throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas as quality home remodeling experts. Community Builders is not a general contractor; their specialties include energy-efficient composite siding, replacement windows, gutter guard systems, sunrooms and metal roof systems. They also specialize in the installation of safe and affordable walk-in tubs and walk-in showers. As we age, the occasional aches and pains of everyday life become less and less occasional. Most of us are bothered by sore muscles, creaky joints and general fatigue as we go through the day – and it’s made worse by everything from exertion and stress to arthritis. “Sure, there are pills and creams that claim to provide comfort,” says Greg, “but there is only one 100 percent natural way to feel better, and that is hydrotherapy. The world leader in hydrotherapy has invented

the only shower that features Jacuzzi® jets. It’s called the Jacuzzi® Hydrotherapy Shower, and it can truly change your life.” They’ve thought of everything, from the four exclusive Jacuzzi® jets that target problem areas to the comfortable and adjustable seat to strategically-placed grab bars and lots

of storage. “This shower truly has it all,” adds Greg. The four Jacuzzi® ShowerPro™ jets focus on the neck, back, hips and knees, and may help ease the discomfort of arthritis, diabetes, aches and pains, neuropathy, sciatica, and inflammation. For over 50 years, the design engineers at Jacuzzi® Inc. have worked to bring the power-

ful benefits of soothing hydrotherapy into millions of homes. Now, they’ve created a system that can replace your existing bathtub or shower and give you a lifetime of enjoyment, comfort and pain relief. The shower fits in place of your existing bath or shower, the seat can be mounted in one of three positions, and it’s

easily accessible when seated or standing. The high gloss acrylic surface is also easy to clean. Greg serves on the National Board of Advisors for GE Home Improvement Lending. His company is a professional organization that has been recognized nationally with the Business Ethics Award presented by the National Association of Siding and Window Dealers. You can review their stellar record with the BBB and the Greater Tulsa Home Builders Association. Community Builders is eager to earn your business and trust.

SShopping Local Pays Off

Santa Cash is back for the holiday shopping season in Claremore. By Carol Beck-Round

If you need some extra money for holiday spending or for paying bills, patronizing Claremore businesses for the 12th annual Santa Cash promotion might help. Kicking off Friday, November 7 at noon and ending at noon on December 19, the annual Claremore Chamber of Commerce’s promotion encourages people to “shop local” for the holiday season. Two cash prizes will be

awarded to Santa Cash shoppers on December 20 at 11 a.m. at the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs Grandstands, east of Claremore on Highway 20. The grand prize winner will walk away with a check for $10,000, while the second-place ticket holder will receive a $2,500 check. Participants must be present to win. “A third drawing of $1,000 cash prize does not require you

to be present to win,” says Dell Davis, Claremore Chamber of Commerce executive director. The first ticket will be posted on Sunday, December 21 on the Chamber website and in the Claremore Daily Progress. If the Santa Cash ticket is not presented at the Chamber office by Friday, January 2, 2015 at the noon deadline, a new number will be posted. The final weekly ticket posting, if no winning ticket has been presented, will be on January 18 with a January 23rd deadline to claim the prize. “The Santa Cash promotion is two-fold,” says Julie Simmons, committee chair. “It rewards shoppers and is a boost to local retail and service participants during the holiday season.”

Davis adds, “This ‘shop local’ promotion is a tremendous opportunity to keep holiday sales in our community. Every dollar spent in our community can recirculate up to seven times, not to mention the clear benefits of the sales tax dollars working in and for Claremore.” Santa Claus Sponsor and host facility is the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs; Mrs. Claus Sponsor, Suburban Chevrolet; Candy Cane Ticket sponsor, Tulsa Federal Credit Union; Reindeer sponsors: RCB Bank, Claremore Daily Progress, Grand Bank, Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy, BancFirst, Bank of Commerce and Wal-Mart. Elves (ticket locations in Claremore) to date include: Asiana Buffett, Atwoods, BancFirst, Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy, Carl’s Coney Island, Claremore Compounding Pharmacy, Claremore Daily Progress, Claremore Tire & Auto Repair,

Will Rogers Downs will be hosting additional drawings in conjunction with Santa Cash. On December 13, Players Club guests can swipe for an entry for two $1,000 pre-Santa Cash drawings, and on December 27, Players Club guests can participate in a second chance entry for a $3,000 drawing. YYou’ll Have a Dickens of a Time Claremore Main Street hosts annual historic Christmas celebration November 21-22. By Carol Beck-Round Claremore Main Street will be kicking off the Christmas season with their annual Dickens on the Boulevard celebration featuring lots of family-friendly fun for everyone November 21-22 in historic downtown. Five of Claremore’s historic buildings will come alive on both nights with a guided 90-minute tour of the upper floors and “a slightly embellished story from Claremore’s past,” says Cindy Bissett, executive director of Claremore Main Street. “Participants on the ‘Tales from the Top’ tours will get to hear a story from a character that is closely associated with the building’s past as they portray their life in early-day Claremore. This year’s attendees will also get to participate in the first city council meeting that will be re-enacted based on documented minutes from that meeting, meet royalty who visited Claremore for the radium baths in 1906, and more.” Tours will begin promptly at 6 p.m. on both nights. Cost is $8 per person. Main Street will be roped off for dancing beginning at 8 both nights, including the polka and waltz as well as other Victorian-era dances. Bob Rollins will be calling the dances, such as the Virginia Reel. With the closing of

downtown to traffic, families can safely stroll, dance or ride by wagon down the historic main street beginning at 6. Businesses will be decorated for the holiday season during the free event. Many businesses will also be hosting open houses and keeping their stores open until 8 p.m. Shoppers can sign up for drawings and receive up to $100 in Dickens Dollars to spend at the participating merchants. “We’ll be giving away $300 to $400 each night,” says Cindy. Visitors will be transported back to the Victorian era with live storefront window displays. Individuals, donned in their extravagantly designed gowns and frock coats, will engage people strolling down the historic sidewalks. For those who want to participate in the action by wearing a costume, a contest will be held to determine the Best Dressed. Winners will receive prizes in the following categories: man, woman, couple, young man, young woman, boy and girl. Onstage entertainment by local groups will add to the festive scene. Children can also have their photos snapped with Santa Claus for $4. For those who want to use their own cameras, the cost is only $2. Other planned activities include a Territorial Marshals

Making plans for this year’s Dickens on the Boulevard are committee members (L to R): Matt Mize, Denise Lawrence, Dale Peterson, Barbara Cruse, Susie Nickerson, Carolyn Peterson and Kathy Glover. (Not pictured: Hope Conner and Abigail Peters of the RSU President’s Leadership Class, Jenny Meeks, Brenda Reno, Hoytana Benigar and Jeannie Smith.) Reenactment, a Living Nativity, and wagon rides to Christmas at the Belvidere, where an open house will be hosted on the second floor of the historic mansion. “The Territorial Marshals will be reenacting a gunfight, meeting people in their saloon where you can buy nonalcoholic beverages like Peanut Sarsaparilla and learn old-time card

games,” says Cindy. Victorian craftsmen will also be on site demonstrating their craft, including a wood turner, a blacksmith, a basket weaver and more. Regional authors will be available both nights to sign copies of their books at Boarding House books, located across from the Claremore Progress.

331st Annual Christmas Home Tour Junior Ocieleta Club celebrates more than three decades of their popular Claremore holiday event.

By Carol Beck-Round Since 1983, the Junior Ocieleta Christmas Home Tour has become a community tradition, showcasing some of Claremore’s fantastic homes. The 2014 event marks the club’s 31st annual tour, set for December 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring five residential homes decorated for the Christmas holiday. Comprised of young women working to raise funds for different charity needs, Junior Ocieleta, through their annual Christmas Home Tour, has assisted many charity organizations. The home tour is their main fundraiser and also provides scholarships for local students. “Last year’s tour was, unfortunately, not well-attended due to an ice storm the night before,” said Publicity Chair Cassie Woods. “For that reason, John and Jan Belcher’s home at 10099 Ratliff Drive will be re-shown this year.” Homes being shown for the first time on the tour are that of Sam and Carrie Foster at 19700 S. Par Lane, Bill and Lou Flanagan at 3207 Covey Trail Circle, Tina and Todd York at 24551 S. 4106 Road, and Mark and Stephanie Preiss at 19488 Pecan Ridge Place. “Each of the homes will be decorated for the holidays according to the personalities of each

individual family and are sure to inspire the Christmas spirit in tour attendees,” said Woods. “Club members will also be present at each home to welcome attendees and answer questions. Individuals, families, groups and even bus tours are invited to attend, though we do ask large groups and bus tours to call in advance for accommodations.” In addition to the five wonderful homes on the tour, Junior Ocieleta will also be hosting a craft fair at the First Presbyterian Church located at 102 E. 4th Street in downtown Claremore. This venue will double the available vendor space over last year’s craft fair. The fair will feature numerous crafters and vendors with booths featuring items such as Christmas decorations, gifts, crafts, jewelry, baked goods, home accessories, clothing, repurposed furniture and much more. There are still a couple of vendor booth spaces available at $50 each. Interested vendors should contact Ashly Snyder at (918) 4094469. In addition to the craft fair, the First Presbyterian Church is also home to Polly’s Pantry, the Presbyterian Women’s most successful fundraiser of the year. It’s a great chance for a break in the tour and fellowship over lunch before or after that last-minute Christmas

Phelps, Tree Line Service, and Claremore Eye Associates. Sponsorship levels are available at increments of $50 to $500, and all sponsors receive recognition according to the sponsorship level they choose. Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring the tour should call Fundraising Chair Savannah Haddock at (918) 951-0804. Tickets for the home tour are $10 per person and are available at several local locations, including the Claremore Chamber, RCB Bank, The District on Main,

Elizabeth Jean Salon, J&J Pharmacy, Belvidere Mansion, Hoovers, The Nut House, The Pink House, Uniquely Susie’s, or from any Junior Ocieleta member.

Non-Drug Therapy Solution for Depression Strength of Mind Behavioral Health successfully utilizes Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to help wake up the brain.

By Duane Blankenship

Dr. Jeff McIlroy is the founder and chief of psychiatry for Strength of Mind Behavioral Health. He has been in practice for 24 years and is board certified in both general and geriatric psychiatry. Dr. McIlroy obtained his undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry from Oklahoma Christian University, and his medical degree and psychiatry residency through the University of Oklahoma. After venturing into private practice, Dr. McIlroy recognized the need for a more comprehensive and multi-disciplinary organization that would better meet community needs in mental health. This led to his founding of Strength of Mind in 2004. The Christian-based practice has grown from an organization of two providers and a secretary to one of 27 providers with a support and administrative team of over 15. Dr. McIlroy is the medical director of psychiatry at

the geriatric inpatient hospital units in Claremore, Henryetta, Cushing and Idabel, OK. He is also the medical director for the outpatient and crisis stabilization programs with Green Country Behavioral Health Services in Muskogee. His private practices are at the Claremore and Tulsa/ Broken Arrow/Pryor office complexes. Strength of Mind has patients ranging from 5 to 105 years of age and is dedicated to making psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible throughout our area. “By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, we aim to meet a variety of patients’ needs regardless of their age,” said Dr. McIlroy. “We were the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation).” TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depres-

sion. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain compelling neurons to start firing, leading to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while lifting moods and encouraging ambition. Research shows that while physical activity is a powerful tool in treating depression, it is usually the last thing a depressed brain wants a person to do. This leads to listlessness, inactivity, and staying out of shape. “Our one-on-one therapeutic fitness gets the body moving and boosts the recovery process,” said Dr. McIlroy. TMS therapy has many advantages including no medical side effects, the patient is fully awake during treatments, and results are known definitely within four to six weeks. “Our team strives to partner with you in your journey to regain your quality of life, restore

SSay “Yes, Dear” to Text Banking Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape. By Kyle Head, RCB Bank Product Coordinator

My wife and I have been married for almost six months now and the best advice given to me was, “If you want a happy marriage, you need to learn to say ‘yes, dear.’” This is great advice for family outings and chores around the house, but what about staying within our budget when the wife wants a new pair of shoes? How do you tell her so you don’t end up on the couch? My bank offers this great tool – text banking. I find that getting text alerts sent to my phone helps me keep track of expenses. I receive an alert every time I make a purchase, sometimes before I even walk out of the store. I can check my balance to see how much I can spend, and I can show my wife just how much she has or doesn’t have to spend on that new pair of shoes. Another great thing about

text banking is the transfer money feature, so when she really wants those shoes (and I can’t convince her otherwise), I can transfer money into our account through a simple text message. My wife, Haley, says it’s fast and handy. And she likes not having to login to the mobile banking app all the time. Text banking is also a great fraud prevention tool. With the holidays fast approaching and fraudulent activity on the rise, this is another layer of security. With text banking, I can receive alerts on all transactions, so I’ll know every time a purchase is made. If a fraudster hacks my account, I will know within minutes of the first purchase and can immediately call my bank and let them know to cancel my card. Sometimes my wife has said that she receives a text before she’s back to her car after

Kyle Head and his wife, Haley, agree text banking is a useful budgeting tool.

shopping. So if I’m at home and a text comes through saying she spent $150, I can check to make sure it was her. Other cool features of Text Banking: •Set times to receive alerts such as 24 hours a day or 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. •No smartphone required – just have to be able to send & receive text messages.

•Set dollar amounts for transactions alerts; get alerts as low as $.01 or over a certain amount. Text banking is an easy way to track expenses and a valuable fraud prevention tool that lets me be a “yes, dear” man while still being money smart. And, if you ever do need to say no to your significant other, just encourage

them to sign up for text banking and hope for the best.

YYou’ll Be Floored by the Selection Hundreds of low-cost choices are available at Mill Creek Flooring Outlet. By Duane Blankenship

Stop in at Mill Creek Flooring Outlet and visit with Manager John Hutton.

Mill Creek first opened doors for business in 1934. Headquartered in Tulsa, the company is still family-owned with locations in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. “Mill Creek is the region’s largest and best known center for home improvement,” says Mill Creek Flooring Outlet Manager John Hutton. “The Flooring Outlet supplies carpet, engineered hardwood, laminate flooring, light fixtures, roll vinyl (linoleum), vinyl planks and squares. We also stock tile for floors and walls including ceramic and natural stone.” The Flooring Outlet sells to homeowners and commercial patrons and carries lots of brand-name products at very attractive prices. “Basically, the Mill Creek Flooring Outlet functions to liquidate overages, remnants and overstocked products from our main retail stores,” said John, “and many of those items are name brands.” They have tons of carpet remnants that may be perfect for your home improvement project. “Many of our customers are

putting new flooring in just one room. Some own rental properties,” said John, “and some buy and ‘flip’ homes. Many of our high quality products are sold at 50 percent off and some, available in limited quantities, are marked down up to 80 percent off.” When you shop the Flooring Outlet, you’re going to find a lot of selection all under one roof. Just keep in mind that many of the products will be available only in remnants or smaller quantities. John says inventories at the Mill Creek Flooring Outlet change weekly. Store personnel will help you load your materials, but you must provide the trailer or truck and tie-downs. “If you’re not a do-it-yourselfer, we can recommend a professional installer to get your project done,” said John. When you choose professional help for your project, they will generally pick up your materials, deliver them to the work site and do the installation. Store hours for the Mill Creek Flooring Outlet are Monday through Thursday

from 9 to 6 and Friday and Saturday from 9 to 5. The Mill Creek Flooring Outlet takes pride in their knowledgeable, experienced showroom sales staff. They represent many years in the flooring business and are eager to assist you with qualified advice on your project and make recommendations they believe you will enjoy. “We love to assist area homeowners who are seeking a great value as they begin their home remodeling project to provide comfort, style and visual appeal to their home for many years to come,” said John.

Car Country Rises Above Competition Two-year, 24,000-mile warranty means great service doesn’t end when you leave the lot.

General Manager Alex Sordo and Service Manager Brian Knight, with the service staff at Car Country’s service facility in Sapulpa. By Christopher Davis

This isn’t a warranty that a salesman will “We’re revolutionizing the buycasually tack on just before signing here, pay-here concept,” says Alex paperwork, raising your monthly Sordo, general manager at Car payments. This warranty is absoCountry. What sets Car Country apart is not only the stellar service, lutely free, and includes roadside assistance and free oil changes for great prices and simple financing, but the fact that this service contin- the duration of the finance term. Sordo explains, “We have an ues well after a purchase has been 800 number that our customers made and the smiling customer can call. If you get a flat, run out drives away. The key is a two-year, 24,000- of gas or even lock yourself out of the car, we’ll come help you.” mile warranty, included free with

And, with free oil changes, there is no excuse to put off such a vital element of routine auto maintenance. “It takes all the risk out,” notes Sordo, “and it protects the company and our customers.” Almost everyone who has bought a pre-owned vehicle has a horror story about a car that went south on them, and struggled to make payments on a car that needed repairs. Car Country understands such anxiety, and strives to ensure

rogers county

that customers are not only completely satisfied with their car, but stay safe on the road and are able to keep up on monthly payments and build their credit. “Buying a car is the easy part,” says Sordo. “But, who is behind you when things go wrong?” With an in-house service facility located in Sapulpa, Car Country can assure customers that they will have your back if things go wrong. This means that, in the event your car breaks down, you won’t have to navigate a labyrinth of phone numbers and departments, only to be sent to a mechanic your dealership “contracts with.” All you have to do is call Car Country, and they will set you up with their team of in-house technicians. A service team of seven fulltime technicians, three detailers and support staff is led by Service Manager Brian Knight, who has been with the company for five years. Knight has been running Car Country’s 20,000-square-foot service facility since it opened in early 2012. Every car undergoes a 30-point inspection before arriving at a lot, so customers can remain confident that breakdowns will be rare. Sometimes, though, an unexpected event does occur. In difficult times, Car Country prides itself on helping customers. “We always work toward a solution,” says Sordo. “In this business, it’s tough to please everyone. We’re making an effort to do so.” After all, Car Country is in the business of keeping customers on the road. “We’re helping customers build their future, not judging them on their past,” he adds. Car Country makes it easy to buy a car, basing finance decisions not on

credit score, but on job, income and stability of customers. The company does, however, report to credit bureaus, which helps customers improve their credit score. With a website that features a straightforward pre-approval application, customers may also view inventory, which changes daily. There, customers can view a broad selection of cars, from a two-door Aveo to full-size SUVs. November and December is the perfect time to buy a car, too, Sordo adds, since they are building inventory in the lead-up to tax season, and there will be more choices than ever. For more information, follow them on Facebook. To experience the best customer service in the industry, drop by in person at any of their five locations. Without a doubt, you will drive away in your next car and feeling safe, knowing Car Country has your back everywhere your car takes you.

Peoria Ave. The sights, scents and sounds of the holidays envelop shoppers the moment the doors open for Carols & Crumpets. Introduced to Tulsa in 1990, this herbal craft fair helps fund Tulsa Herb Society’s activities and civic donations. Distinguished artisans present their wares in a delightfully relaxed holiday atmosphere. Some of the items featured at Carols & Crumpets are herbal vinegars, which are always flavorful, along with chutneys, seasonings and teas. Herbal cosmetics, soaps and

essential oils create a gentle respite for the senses during this busy time of year. Live plants, topiaries and poinsettias add to the mix. Handmade Christmas ornaments and miniature fairy furniture as well as handcrafted baskets, pottery, and candles remind us of some of the many creative talents that can be found in our area. Garden signs, trellises and old English troughs take us back to the garden we so eagerly await during the winter months. The Tulsa World has called Carols & Crumpets “one of the more anticipated events of the holiday season.” It is a joy for members, participants and visitors alike. Everyone is encouraged to buy tickets in hopes to win this year’s one-of-a-kind vintage style tree with wool felt ornaments

Celebrating 25 years in the Real Estate Industry Standards of Practice of the National Association of REALTORS®,” says Stout. “We want to serve the public in the most appropriate way with the keywords being servant, honesty and trust. How we conduct ourselves as realtors is a reflection on the company and what we’re trying to achieve.” Over the 25-year history of the company, one thing that Stout sees as a big game changer is the use of technology to sell houses. When their office doors opened, they boasted a fax machine, electronic typewriter and photocopier. When they graduated to a computer, dial-up was the only option for the growing company – and that was 1990. Stout also built that

computer, along with several others in the office, from used computer parts he purchased at a junk auction for $500. But OklaHomes grew and so did its technology, with each agent now sporting the best tools in the business to help clients achieve their goals. “We’ve always been on the cutting edge, using all the tools available in tech marketing,” he adds. “We have an up-to-date website with a live feed for all of our listings.” REALTORS® at OklaHomes believe in putting their best foot forward, assisting their clients by helping them present their house in the best possible way before putting it on the market. “We have two certified home stagers working

for us,” he says. “It’s a failure on our part if we can’t convince the home owner to make the necessary repairs or to declutter their home before it goes on the market. We want the homeowner to get the best price possible for their property, so we take our time coaching and working with people to get their house ready to sell.” To stay on top of their game, OklaHomes REALTORS® continue to improve their skills through continuing education. For example, a recent training event focused on taking better photographs to place on the company’s website. “After the training,” he adds, “I noticed a marked improvement in the quality of the photos. We want to do everything we can to improve

Citizens of District 3 Want Roll-Off Containers for residents to dispose of large, bulky items. This helped prevent people in District 3 from having to drive to the landfill in Tulsa to dispose of such items. “Before the roll-off trash container program was implemented, the County responded to about three calls per week regarding items such as mattresses and large screen TVs or other bulky items being dumped on the side of the road. The program greatly reduced the number of calls to around two per month,” say county officials. While speaking to residents during his campaign, Ron has found that the people of Rogers County District 3 want this program to return. “From 2013 to 2014, 169 roll-off containers were emptied. That is a large amount of waste; residents were most certainly making use of this program,” says Burrows. “If elected Rogers County Commissioner District 3, I will make it a top priority to bring

the roll-off container program back.” The cost to empty the containers from the three sites last year was more than $53,000. “A grant is available through the Association of County Commissioners of Oklahoma in the amount of $5,000 to help fund the program,” says Burrows. “In addition, recycling opportunities are available to help offset the costs.” The program offers many benefits to residents. The service is free to residents; however, it is not meant to be used in place of a regular weekly trash service. The program is designed to provide a convenient place to dispose of large, bulky items including furniture, televisions, mattresses and more. It is not intended to be used by contractors who generate this type of solid waste on a regular basis. “It is important to me to listen to the residents of Rogers County and serve their needs,”

says Burrows. The position of county commissioner involves not only overseeing the construction of roads and bridges, but also inspecting and improving county programs and facilities, supervising financial affairs of the county, developing personal policies, making agreements affecting the welfare of the citizens, and much, much more. Ron’s 30-plus year work history, his solid background in budget processes and his proven ability to be a leader as well as a team player is what Rogers County needs. Burrows’ platform includes a focus on public safety, working in harmony with all entities throughout Rogers County to better serve its citizens and, most importantly, fiscal and budget responsibility. Burrows states that if elected, he will work with other agencies to identify the county’s needs and help ensure that resources are available to accomplish important missions, with a focus on

budget management. “My experience has given me the confidence to run for county commissioner,” Burrows said. “I hope the citizens of Rogers County consider me for the job and I would appreciate their vote on November 4th.”

HHistory Is In the Air

The Commemorative Air Force hosts Wings Over Tulsa and the 13th annual Big Band Hangar Dance on November 8. By Christopher Davis

Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 8, and plan on attending the Commemorative Air Force Spirit of Tulsa Squadron’s Wings Over Tulsa and the 13th annual Big Band Hangar Dance. The CAF’s mission is to keep aviation history alive through the acquisition, restoration and preservation of combat aircraft. Talk to Col. Robert Prater about any of the planes in the hangar or in one of the many pictures hung in the office, and you will get a history lesson even better than a college course could offer. He explains how a particular model was used to transport injured soldiers and how another was part of a batch sold by the United States to the French for their effort in North Africa.

It’s enough to leave one reeling from the incredible, sometimes overlooked, details involved in the early years of aircraft design. As a curator of many restored combat aircraft, the CAF participates in air shows across the country. The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron is no different, and proudly shows its World War II era Fairchild PT19 around the region. When it’s not showing off, it rests in the CAF hangar at Jenks-Riverside Airport. Additionally, the CAF honors combat veterans by providing flights in the very planes they have restored. “It is important to us to give something back to our veterans, and this is our way of saying thanks,” adds CAF Spirit of Tulsa Squadron Colonel Bob

Col. Bob Prater in the hangar with restorations in progress.

Prater. However, flights in a World War II era PT-19 are not reserved exclusively for veterans. The CAF sells flight tickets to the general public as a fundraiser. This month, the public will have a special opportunity to ride in the PT-19 and support the CAF. On Saturday, November 8, the CAF Spirit of Tulsa Squadron will hold its biggest event of the year with a full day of activities. The day begins with Wings Over Tulsa. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Spirit of Tulsa Squadron will provide free honor flights for WWII veterans and rides to the public (with purchase of flight ticket). There will also be plenty of exhibits featuring vintage WWII memorabilia, military vehicles,

model aircraft and more. Attendees are invited to tour the facility, learn about the history of aircraft and vehicles, and bid in a silent auction. Daytime admission is free for all ages. Flight passengers must be 12 years or older. As the afternoon wraps up, attendees will move into the hangar for the Big Band Hangar Dance, officially kicking off the 13th annual soirée. The 18-piece Sounds of Music Orchestra will provide the soundtrack for the evening, performing 1940s-era music. The Big Band Hangar Dance has become a favorite amongst swing dancers, with several troupes attending every year from around the country. Free swing dance lessons will be provided from 6 to 7 p.m.

Recommended attire is casual, military or vintage. There will be great opportunities for photographs and a chance to pick up some vintage memorabilia at the PX, Vintage Store and the silent auction – all for the worthy cause of preserving our history and educating the public.

BBring Home the Heat Place your order with Cajun Ed’s for a “Big Easy” holiday feast. By Christopher Davis

Those in search of heat for their holiday feast need look no further than Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats. Serving as Tulsa’s portal to Louisiana cuisine, Ed “Cajun Ed” Richards’ restaurant offers authentic Cajun-style meats, sauces and more. Holidays are filled with friends, family and food. Every tradition, though, can benefit from spicing things up from time to time. Maximize family time by bringing home the finest Cajun-style cuisine around. Take the guesswork out of recipes and order from a selection of turducken, ham, beef tenderloin and much more. Without a doubt, the crown jewel of Cajun Ed’s holiday menu is their famous turducken. For the uninitiated, the turducken represents the ultimate main course. The dish features a deboned turkey with a deboned duck stuffed inside, with a deboned chicken inside of that. All three birds are filled with pork sausage and cornbread dressing and seasoned with a special blend of Cajun

spices. The result is a savory delight with a hint of heat, without an ounce of dry meat. Cajun Ed’s prepares meat and seafood orders and packages them in vacuum-sealed bags. All the customer has to do is pick up their order and place

the meat in the oven. There are plenty of sides and desserts to choose from to compliment your main course, too. Favorites like broccoli cheese casserole, cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole and andoille cornbread dressing are amongst

the many options on the menu. Desserts include key lime pie, pecan pie, chocolate ganache pie and more. Everything is made from scratch, using authentic recipes brought directly to Tulsa by Cajun Ed himself. Of course, there are more exotic items that are found only in Cajun culinary circles. For instance, alligator meat is available on the menu and for special order. If gator ribs sound a bit intimidating, consider trying the Cajun frog legs. And it wouldn’t be a Cajun restaurant without crawfish. In fact, every May, they put on a crawfish festival, complete with live music in the parking lot. Initially a specialty store focused on shipping quality meats, Cajun spices and related food items across the country, Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats eventually expanded and moved to 2101 E. 71st St., where they reside today. The big red house afforded more room to meet the demands of increased shipping orders – an operation more extensive than one would think. The store is a USDA inspected facility, and that means a federal inspector is on site every day, working

alongside staff to ensure the highest quality is upheld. In addition, more space meant the store could expand to offer lunch dining, an instant hit with Tulsans and the many Louisiana transplants in the area. Several years ago, Ed expanded their dining hours to include dinner, and updated the menu to offer a variety of entrées that showcase the many types of meats and Cajun ingredients they are known for shipping nationally. Today, business is thriving at Cajun Ed’s. A large percentage of their business is still shipping online orders to restaurants and homes across the country. The dining room continues to fill up for lunch and dinner. As the holiday season brings colder weather, it seems everyone wants a taste of that Cajun heat to warm them up. This is the perfect time to stop by and experience firsthand the best Cajun food north of the bayou. For more information, contact

For some, the return of football is an exciting and exhilarating time. However, with the collision nature of the sport, the return of football can also mean challenging injuries, concussions, and significant amounts of rehabilitation and continued care for some. When the excitement of the game turns into the disappointment of an injury, many have realized that they don’t have to drive to Tulsa to find the sports medicine care they need. Dr. Brad Lawson, a physician and orthopedic surgeon in Owasso, has pro-

vided excellence in service and sports medicine care in the Owasso, Claremore and

Collinsville area for the last several years. Dr. Lawson also volunteers his time as a

rogers county

team orthopedist and sports medicine physician for several of the teams in the area. Dr. Lawson began his career in the United States Air Force, where he served both as a general medical officer and as an orthopedic surgeon for a total of 16 years. After completing his service, he finished additional subspecialty training in orthopedic sports medicine prior to coming to Owasso. With his expertise in a wide-range of

Page 29

orthopedic problems and conditions, in addition to his specialty in sports medicine and reconstructive medicine, excellence in orthopedic and sports medicine care is right here in our communities. As the school year and all of its athletic competition rolls on, or if you’re the weekend warrior with aches and pains that just won’t go away, you can know that great orthopedic and sports medicine care does not require you to drive to Tulsa anymore. Dr. Lawson and his staff office in Owasso next door to Urgent Care of Green Country. They also have an office in Broken Arrow where they see patients on Thursday mornings. Whether it is competitive athletics or recreational enjoyment that may cause an injury or a pain, Dr. Lawson and his staff will keep you at your best.

or dinner. Lunch is anchored in The Hamlet’s famous honey-kissed ham and turkey selection, with plenty of deli sandwiches to satisfy the pickiest of eaters. Wraps and salads are available too. Dinner is a bit more elaborate, featuring steak, pasta and other entrées, as well as soups and salads. A wide variety of appetizers – and the full bar – will ensure your dinner will start with a smile. What holiday meal would be complete without a ham or turkey at the center of the table? The Hamlet is famous for its honey-kissed ham and roasted turkey, and specializes in holiday orders. Take the stress out of cooking and order your ham or turkey in advance. It is easy to order; just go online to The Hamlet’s website and click “Reserve Your Order Now.” They have a full holiday dinner menu, including sides and desserts, as well as a catering menu and party trays of meats and cheeses. Or, better yet, just bring

the entire family or office to The Hamlet and let them do all the work for you. The Hamlet hosts parties for families and businesses. Renting a space is just as easy as ordering a ham. For gifts, The Hamlet has you covered as well. Choose from a selection of ham gift baskets, from small to extralarge – or customize a basket to suit your needs. Baskets include honey-kissed ham, cream cheese and crackers, roasted raspberry chipotle sauce, specialty mustard sauce, Boar’s Head cheeses, French bread, and nuts and candy. Or, keep it simple and purchase a gift card – always a safe choice for offices. Year round, The Hamlet is a great place for a quick snack and a drink with coworkers or a dinner with family and friends. But, as fall heads into the holiday stretch, the family-owned restaurant and catering company really shines.
