Technology is a beautiful thing, especially during the holidays when I can choose to avoid the stress of a crowded mall and do my holiday shopping online in the quiet comfort of my own home (in my PJs, if I want). Shopping online has its perks, online specials, doorstep delivery. But, it’s important to remember to shop with caution. RCB Bank employee Tammy White also enjoys online shopping for its convenience and the ability to comparison shop for the lowest prices. At the same time, she exercises due diligence as a consumer to help ensure she and her money are protected. Here are some of her online safe practices. Eighty-five Rogers County children need a foster family. Due to abuse or neglect, these children have been removed from their biological homes and are currently living in emergency shelters or foster homes. However, with only 14 non-relative foster homes available in Rogers County at this time, there is a dire need for families to provide these children with love, stability and guidance. Statewide, according to Jason Cecil, director of TFI Family Connections recruitment, Oklahoma has a huge shortage of foster

parents. “Rogers County is one of those in desperate need of foster families,” he says. In a new effort to keep up with the rising number of children coming into the foster care system, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) has awarded contracts to private partnerships for the recruitment, support and retention of foster families. TFI Family Connections, LLC is one of these private not-for-profits that will now work to recruit and retain foster families. “We will be working alongside OKDHS to service the entire

state of Oklahoma with the exception of the Oklahoma City area,” says Cecil. TFI will help support families as they interact with OKDHS throughout the foster care approval process and during placement and care of children in their homes. They also help provide an understanding of the child welfare system. “A large number of children in custody are placed in shelter care, even as young as five or six years of age,” says Cecil. “Because of a lack of foster homes and enough (continued on page 28)

“The higher they go the harder they fall” rings loud in this type of environment. As the market continues into record territory, you have to wonder which of these days is going to be the “high” of the run. Many have seen their 401k’s and brokerage accounts produce nice returns. The question now is “Do you have a plan to help preserve the gains that you have made?” If not, you could ride this sexy red sports car right back into the swamp. In fact, it may be time to start looking to trade that sports car for a one ton work truck, if you catch my drift. It really doesn’t matter in the end how much of a run up you’ve had, what matters is what you get to keep. If I had a penny for every time I’ve had someone bring in their old 401k statement or brokerage statements from another firm and tell me “what the value used to be ….” with a sad and bewildered look in their eye, I’d be a rich woman. Well then, I say “Let’s don’t do that again!

Most people don’t like change, but when Margo Stewart and the staff at Claremore’s famous Pink House decide to shake up the menu with specials or add new items to the regular menu, customers don’t mind a bit. Whether it’s a new entrée or dessert, there’s always something fresh to anticipate at the restaurant, which is located in a Victorian-era house near downtown Claremore’s historic district. Stewart purchased the restaurant and tearoom in 2007 and set about to continue the traditions that make the popular dining place a northeastern Oklahoma destination for those who love not only the tasty made-from-scratch food, but also the cozy atmosphere. Specials are on the menu each day, but now, says Stewart, some of those specials will begin appearing on the menu as regular options. For example, a hefty BLT, often popular with male diners, will become a staple.

“We’re always trying new recipes,” says Stewart. With four quiches, two specialty casseroles, chicken salad and other sandwiches, fresh crisp salads, homemade soups and desserts like baked fudge, there are plenty of choices to satisfy anyone’s palate. After the first of the year, The Pink House staff will begin offering cooking and baking classes, according to Shari Beguin, catering director and Stewart’s daughter. “I will be teaching classes on how to make pie dough and scones. We will be making whole pies during the class, and while our pies are baking, we will have a social time with tea and scones.” Other classes will be offered, depending on the interest generated. “We encourage those who are interested to visit our Facebook page and let us know what classes you would like to see us offer,” she says. OOn the Field Again Recovering from surgery, football players credit Summit Physical Therapy staff with return to the game for their senior year.

Varsity football players Daniel Moniz and Zane McElroy both suffered debilitating athletic injuries requiring surgery, and eventually physical therapy, to get them back in shape and on the field for their senior year. The two talented athletes play for different teams – Moniz for Claremore Sequoyah and McElroy for Collinsville – but their path to recovery led them to Summit Physical Therapy, where hard work, determination and a can-do attitude helped the two quarterbacks from missing their last year of high school football. Moniz, who also plays free safety for the Sequoyah Eagles, was playing defense in spring ball practice earlier this year when he says he turned the wrong way. “I heard a popping, snapping sound,” he says, “and I thought, ‘not again.’” Familiar with the sound – because it was not the first time Moniz had suffered this type of injury, he says, “I had completely torn my ACL and partially torn my meniscus on my left leg when I turned the wrong way that day. I had done the

same thing on my right knee when I was in eighth grade, so I knew what it was.” Moniz found himself once again in surgery to repair the damage. Two weeks later, he was in physical therapy at Summit. “I spent almost four months getting therapy at Summit and doing daily exercises at home,” he adds. “I already knew the exercises and knew what I had to do. I was driven to be back out there on the field.” Returning to the field exactly one day shy of four months after his injury, Moniz was cautious because he didn’t want to reinjure the knee. “I had dealt with this before and I knew my limits,” he adds. “The hardest part was getting back in shape, getting my stamina back, because I had gained 10 pounds before I began physical therapy.” Moniz, who is being recruited by major college football teams, highly recommends Summit Physical Therapy. “Since they knew me, they pushed me to do more,” he says. “The staff is friendly and caring. They know what they’re doing and

I am back to normal or better.” McElroy, who plays quarterback for the Collinsville Cardinals, began playing football during his elementary years. His shoulder injury, eventually leading to surgery and physical therapy, “actually was an accumulation over time,” he says. However, last fall, during the 3rd quarter of the last game of the season, McElroy fell on his right shoulder – his throwing arm. “I heard and felt it pop after the play,” he says. He didn’t seek medical help at first, but after the 2012 basketball and golf season, he was back in spring football practice when the shoulder popped out of place again. He had torn the labrum in half. Two weeks after surgery, McElroy was also in physical therapy to recover and get back on the field in time for his senior year. Like Moniz, he knew the secret to recovery was hard work and determination, requiring not only coming to Summit five days a week for therapy but also doing exercises at home. McElroy

still comes to Summit two evenings a week for therapy but was able to play in his first game against Coweta during week seven of the season. “He even earned a nomination for the Tulsa World’s Player of the Week his first week back,” says Sean Cox, a registered physical therapist and co-owner of Summit. “Both of these young men are gifted athletes with good character. They are leaders and very focused on the field,” he adds. McElroy, who was referred to Summit Physical

Therapy by an Oklahoma City PT, says, “Summit cares. They made me want to feel like I could excel and not just give me a bunch of exercises to do,” he says. “Sean even came to one of my football games to watch me play. That meant a lot to me.”

Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helps patient Ramona Wimp get her life back.

Ramona Wimp is a selfdefined go-getter. Three years ago, however, Ramona, who is now in her early 50s, began experiencing excruciating pain in her legs and back. “I couldn’t even walk across a parking lot without pain,” she says. Ramona, who had spent her life in active pursuits like horseback riding, dancing and playing with her two daughters, suddenly found

herself incapacitated, unable not only to enjoy her usual activities, but also unable to take care of her family. “When I got home in the evening from work, I had to use my hands to lift my legs, one at a time, out of the car,” she adds. “I could barely climb the steps to our front door.” After arriving home, Ramona often found herself curled in a fetal position,

trying to fight the pain. “I couldn’t even clean my house,” she says. “The pain affected every area of my life, including driving. I couldn’t drive very far without excruciating pain.” An optimistic and outgoing woman by nature, Ramona continued to smile at work, greeting those who walked through the doors of Claremore’s Goodwill, where she is a customer service man-

However, the smile hid the pain she fought daily. “My co-workers were so great,” she says. “They worked with me, allowing me to sit on a stool behind the counter as a cashier when I couldn’t do my regular work.” Some days, she couldn’t even manage that. “The pain would get the best of me sometimes and I’d have to leave work.” Because she had never had a back injury or been involved in an accident, Ramona couldn’t understand why she was in so much pain. “I had ridden horses a lot when I was younger,” she explains. “I’d been bucked and kicked but never had any pain.” In the past, she had also competed in 5K races, leading to knee trouble and a procedure to offer some relief. “I had a lot of wear and tear on my knees,” she adds, “but I couldn’t see how that could affect my back.” Ramona had been to different doctors, including 20 sessions with a chiropractor. “I had also been to an orthopedic surgeon,” she says. “I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs, so I asked him about my options.” Seeing the specialist revealed problems with degenerative discs in her back. “He is the one who suggested spinal decompression as an option, but I still waited for awhile,” she says. A visit and several tests with Dr. Dwight J. Korgan at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma eventually led to her giving spinal decompression a try. “I am so glad I

did,” she says. “It literally gave me my life back.” Before Ramona finally made the decision to try IDD Therapy, she was at work one day when Ebony Jones, the office technician for Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, saw her suffering from muscle spasms. “Even though I had a smile on my face, Ebony saw I was in pain by the way I moved slowly around the store,” she says. “She convinced me to move ahead with the spinal decompression.” After 20 treatments, which she began this past January, Ramona says, “I can’t believe how good I feel. I’m back to my old self, enjoying those things I couldn’t do before.” One thing this energetic mother does is keep up with her daughters, ages 12 and 14. “They are both active in afterschool activities that involve my driving them to lessons and other appointments, Monday through Friday,” she says. “Without pain, I can now enjoy driving them to the places they need to be. before he was even old enough to do so,” said Melinda. “This was an opportunity for us to do something together that I knew he really wanted to try. And on top of how nice it’s been to work with my son, we are very happy with how successful the store has been.” The laidback atmosphere of the store with its large wood display cases lining the walls is very welcoming to shoppers. Several racks line the center aisles, making it easy to browse the wine options in the clean and comfortable store. With everything from whites, reds, champagne and dessert wines, there is sure to be something for everyone. Some of the local varieties include wines from Summerside Vineyards in Vinita, Sparks Vineyard in Sparks, and Whispering Vines in Tulsa. In addition to the wines it sells, Wine

Down Spirits offers a very large selection of beer including Leinenkugel’s, Tank 7, Boulevard and Samuel Adams, as well as local brands, such as Marshall and the popular Rock Hard Root Beer made in Oklahoma City. And of course, all the popular brands of liquor and spirits are also available at the store. “We try to carry a little bit of everything to make sure we are serving all of our customers,” said Melinda. “We are also able to special order just about anything we might not have in stock. And, depending on the availability with our distributors, we can usually have those special orders here the next business day.” The large selection isn’t the only thing different about Wine Down Spirits. If caught driving drunk or high, penalties in Rogers County can include jail time, court fees and fines, and driving restrictions. Many are not aware, however, that driving after taking prescription medicine can also lead to impaired driving and the related criminal charges. People often assume that only

illegal drug use could result in a DUI (driving under the influence) charge. “What Healthy Community Partnership members want to let everyone know is that taking any sort of substance (alcohol, medication or illicit drugs) impairs your ability to operate your vehicle is breaking the law," said Trisha DeLozier, HCP certified prevention specialist. December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and focuses on both

drunk driving and the growing problem of drugged driving. Drugged driving has been overlooked for a number of years, but research shows it may be responsible for more than 20 percent of car crashes. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office reports that in 2012 there were 19 drivers under the age of 21 with a drug-related driver condition and passengers in their vehicle. Fortunately, there were no passenger fatalities, but 12 were seriously injured. In the same year, there were 106 drivers age 21 and older with a drugrelated driver condition and passengers in the vehicle. One passenger was killed and 81 others were seriously injured. To demonstrate further the increased problem of drugged driving, a national survey shows drugs were present more than seven times as frequently as alcohol among weekend nighttime drivers in the United States. “One problem,” says DeLozier, “is that law enforcement officers currently have no technology to help them identify drugged drivers. With alcohol a Breathalyzer is useful, but new funding is

being sought on the federal level to research methods such as a saliva test for the drugged driving suspects.” In addition, to combat the problem, drug recognition trainings are becoming more common and officers can become certified as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). “‘Don’t Wreck the Holidays’ is a message we hope to promote this month,” said Amy Graham, a project director at Volunteers for Youth and an HCP member. “Impaired driving can affect every one of us, even if we are not the one driving under the influence,” she added. Conservative estimates show drugged driving is responsible for 440,000 injuries and $59.9 billion in costs each year. Of the people who died in impaired crashes (other than drivers) 1,612 were passengers, 1,049 were occupants of other vehicles, 710 were pedestrians or bicyclists, and 91 were child passengers. Impaired driving fatalities occur all year-round, but data shows that the holiday season is a particularly dangerous time on the roadways. Many

of these tragedies could have been avoided. Most occurred because of a person’s bad decision to drive after drinking alcohol and often combining that with prescription medications or other drugs. “When you choose to drive while impaired, you are endangering yourself, your passengers, and those on the road around you,” Graham added. Volunteers for Youth and Healthy Community Partnership are working to bring awareness about this preventable tragedy by providing window clings and stickers to Rogers County high school students for distribution to friends and parents. “We ask that you help to share this message this holiday season,” said Graham. “‘Don’t Wreck the Holidays: Pledge to never accept a ride with an impaired driver.’” For more information, contact

Stop Into the District dream was born. Since neither of the ladies had any previous retail experience they decided to start small with a booth in a downtown antique store selling furniture paint along with pieces they had restored. It wasn’t long before they were ready to open their own storefront. When the former Nesting Necessities opened a year ago, the original plan was to offer clothing and jewelry through consignors, while Susan and Cari personally offered home decor, furniture paint, refinished furniture and painting classes. But after just a couple of months, the store owners began purchasing their own clothing and accessories, and home decor, and by the end of January, the pair owned 90 percent of the product offered in the boutique. “There were several reasons we decided to change the name of the store,” said Susan. “Our focus has really changed from a home store to a boutique and we think it’s important that our name reflects that. Nesting Necessities just no longer fits. Additionally, we often had people thinking we were a maternity store.”

The women who work in the store believe the level of customer service they offer is exemplary. They each make it a personal goal to provide each customer with an opportunity to feel better about themselves when they leave than when they walked in the door. “We want our customers to feel special and know we care about them,” said Susan. “We understand that confidence is key to a woman’s happiness and whether she is looking for an elegant business dress or a tunic and leg-

Live camels, sheep and donkeys add to the authenticity of the greatest story ever told. Reservations are requested, and large groups are welcome. Admission is free. The Bethlehem Walk attracts thousands of attendees each year from a six-state area. Individuals and groups congregate in the church’s auditorium. Everyone is assigned to a family and a guide who is also the “family head.” Some participants will be given Roman coins with which to pay taxes as they enter Nazareth. You may even be hassled by Roman guards along the road as you march to Bethlehem. You will soon figure out, everyone becomes part of the production. A tax collector receives your family’s taxes,

Along your route, you will encounter angels with silvery white robes and shepherds kneeling in fields. You will visit three wise men and their camels, and will be asked if you have seen the star in the east. As you enter the bazaar, you will enjoy tasting some of the food samples. The bazaar area houses several shops with baskets, jewelry, fruit and nuts, rugs and more. Half the fun of the evening is interacting with the characters, especially when the shepherds invite you to join them at their camp to enjoy their nice warm fire. As you journey on, you will likely see beggars and lepers. Please don’t touch! To do so is “punishable by death.” You will discover that there are no rooms available in Bethelem. One innkeeper announces that he actually put up a man and his wife with child in a stable down the street. It was the last available vacancy in the city. Near the end of your walk, you will fast-forward 33 years as you encounter three crosses on a hillside and visit the tomb area where the body of Christ the Savior has

gone missing. An angel will appear and read from the scripture. At the conclusion of your walk, you are invited back to Fellowship Hall, where you will visit homes and courtyards of ancient times. Children may make a fabric doll, play games, and pet farm animals, while everyone is welcome to enjoy cider and cookies. Brad McKisick has been involved in the auto paint and body industry since high school – that’s almost 37 years. Therefore, when the opportunity arose to purchase an auto paint supply store in Claremore, the Rogers County native jumped at the chance to continue the previous owner’s commitment to good service and quality, affordable products. “The previous owners started their business on Highway 20 East in 1996,” McKisick says. “They moved into the current location at 125 W. 1st St. – almost directly across from the Claremore Police Department – 12 years ago.” Auto Paint Supply had already established a friendly reputation for taking care of their customers’ needs when it comes to finding the right paint and supplies to complete the job. “We are committed to the same,” he adds. “We want to help people finish their project at a reasonable price.” McKisick took ownership of the hometown business on

May 1, 2013. “We are family owned and take pride in offering one-on-one help to our customers,” he says. “We have a knowledgeable staff that goes to great lengths to make sure our customers are satisfied.” Sometimes, research is required to find the code needed to get the correct color match, especially on older vehicles. When the color code cannot be located on the vehicle itself, the staff turns to a color code book as well as the computer to find the formula necessary to create the perfect paint match for each customer’s needs. McKisick believes it’s important to offer advice and steer the customer in the right direction, whether it is the correct paint or the other supplies needed for the job. “We get a lot of do-it-yourselfers in here,” he says. This is especially important for doit-yourselfers who may have not completed an auto body project for 20 or 30 years. “EPA and Hazmat standards have changed,” he says. “In

fact, the industry has changed a lot. service that features live music daily. Two years ago they began seated dinner service. A rotating list of specials is offered each day of the week. One of Ed’s favorites is “Cajun-Mex Tuesday,” with red bean burritos, a variety of Cajun tacos, and his grandfather’s crawfish tamales. The tamales are a longtime family favorite from the catering service and were nearly lost after “Paw Paw” passed. When they could not decipher the bits and pieces of the recipe scribbled down on a scrap of paper, the family decided to get together to try to recreate it. “My wife loved the tamales. They were her favorite thing to eat in the world, so she helped us recreate it. I had parts of the recipe from my cousin, whose brother used to make them for the catering company. My brother in Florida came to town and for a week we got together and made tamales. We’d make a batch and give them to my wife, and she’d tell us ‘that wasn’t it,’ so we’d make another batch and she’d say no. I don’t know how many batches we made, but finally she said we got it right. And we all knew when we tasted them – they were super good.”

Surgeon Can YYour Make the Difference Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experiences with two surgeons. By Joshua Danker-Dake

Patsy Wessel of Oilton had a positive knee replacement operation with Dr. Ronald LaButti.

When Patsy Wessel, 73, of Oilton, Oklahoma, had knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti last year, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The difference in the two procedures, she says, was like night and day. “I had already had one surgery done, and it was very painful,” Wessel says. “I didn’t have a good experience with my first doctor, and I didn’t feel like my physical therapist did a very good job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good experience with him.” Wessel’s knee problems developed gradually, over decades, she says. “I’m 73 years old, and I’m in my 35th year in my job, where I walk and stand on cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cement floors. I’ve worked hard in my life, you know? You just wear your knees out.” Wessel says the knee replacement with Dr.

LaButti was an immeasurably better experience than her previous surgery. “Yes, I had pain – it’s always painful. But for a knee replacement, it was significantly better,” she says. “I had much less pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told me that the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, I was able to get up and walk without so much pain because of how well it was done. I wasn’t even on my cane or walker more than a week before I could walk by myself.” A big part of Wessel’s good experience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passive motion machine for physical therapy, and Wessel says it worked wonders. “Dr. LaButti sent me home with this machine: for two hours, three times a day, you put your leg in it, and it raises and works your knee. It worked wonderfully, and it

doesn’t hurt.” Wessel says her first doctor didn’t use that machine. “He had someone physically doing it, and they can hurt you. Sometimes I was crying by the time they finished. But with the machine, it didn’t hurt, and it kept the knee limber. It worked so well.” Overall, Wessel says, her experience was exceptional. “The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, and he was very nice.
