Stop Into the District Tips for Safer Shopping Online The former Nesting Necessities changes its name to better reflect what it offers Claremore shoppers.
Online shopper Tammy White offers her safe practices.

Technology is a beautiful thing, especially during the holidays when I can choose to avoid the stress of a crowded mall and do my holiday shopping online in the quiet comfort of my own home (in my PJs, if I want). Shopping online has its perks, online specials, doorstep delivery. But, it’s important to remember to shop with caution. RCB Bank employee Tammy White also enjoys online shopping for its convenience and the ability to comparison shop for the lowest prices. At the same time, she exercises due diligence as a consumer to help ensure she and her money are protected. Here are some of her online safe practices. Always make sure the website is legit. “One of the best ways to know who you are really dealing with is to scroll over the web address and make sure it doesn’t change to a
The District on Main in Claremore may have a new name, but the friendly faces you will find inside are the same that have been serving the customers of Nesting Necessities since November of 2012. Just a couple weeks ago the downtown boutique underwent a name change to better showcase its offerings to the community.
Owners Susan Todd and Cari Bohannan spent several years helping run the businesses their husbands owned before opening what is now called The District on Main. The women met through a mutual hobby of refurbishing furniture and after taking a weekend painting class together, a (continued on page 28)

different company,” said White. “Also check for secure-locked sites. I only shop at stores that are well known, like Amazon.com or Wal-Mart, and I tell my sons if they’ve never ordered from a particular site to Google it first and see what others are saying about the site.” RCB Bank adds: Be very cautious of emails and texts claiming to be from merchants
even if you recently purchased from them. Fraudsters are professionals and design very convincing documents. Log in to the merchant’s official site to read communications regarding your purchases. Use one credit card. “I stick to one major credit card so I don’t have to remember how I paid,” White said. “This way, I have one (continued on page 28)

Devoted to the Strength of Family Foster care parents are needed to bridge the gap for children in Rogers County. By Carol Beck-Round

Eighty-five Rogers County children need a foster family. Due to abuse or neglect, these children have been removed from their biological homes and are currently living in emergency shelters or foster homes. However, with only 14 non-relative foster homes available in Rogers County at this time, there is a dire need for families to provide these children with love, stability and guidance. Statewide, according to Jason Cecil, director of TFI Family Connections recruitment, Oklahoma has a huge shortage of foster
parents. “Rogers County is one of those in desperate need of foster families,” he says. In a new effort to keep up with the rising number of children coming into the foster care system, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) has awarded contracts to private partnerships for the recruitment, support and retention of foster families. TFI Family Connections, LLC is one of these private not-for-profits that will now work to recruit and retain foster families. “We will be working alongside OKDHS to service the entire
state of Oklahoma with the exception of the Oklahoma City area,” says Cecil. TFI will help support families as they interact with OKDHS throughout the foster care approval process and during placement and care of children in their homes. They also help provide an understanding of the child welfare system. “A large number of children in custody are placed in shelter care, even as young as five or six years of age,” says Cecil. “Because of a lack of foster homes and enough (continued on page 28)

PRESERVE THE GAINS IN YOUR 401K
Use a different strategy!” Don’t get seduced by the greed monster thinking that you must drive the sexy red sports car until the wheels fall off. In the last 13 years (March 2000 to September 2013) the S&P 500 has increased from 1527 to 1745. (1) That is an increase of 14.2% in 13 years! This means the S&P 500 had just a little over 1% average return a year. During that time we have had two major recessions. From 2000-2002 the S&P 500 fell 47.6%. (2) It took 5 years to recover to its previous high. From 20072009 the S&P 500 fell 56.2%. (3) It has taken 4 years to recover those losses. The
market moves in two directions. Take time to look at where you’ve been, where you are, and where you want to go. Don’t sit around and wait for a crisis to hit and then try to figure out what to do. Plan your exit strategy in advance so that you are not making emotional decisions. Don’t wait until you have lost $100,000 in your 401k or investment accounts to figure it out. If you don’t know “what to do or how to do it” when it comes to your investments, pay for someone to help you. It will be worth every penny! For more information visit www.waterstoneweatlh.com. “The higher they go the harder they fall” rings loud in this type of environment. As the market continues into record territory, you have to wonder which of these days is going to be the “high” of the run. Many have seen their 401k’s and brokerage accounts produce nice returns. The question now is “Do you have a plan to help preserve the gains that you have made?” If not, you could ride this sexy red sports car right back into the swamp. In fact, it may be time to start looking to trade that sports car for a one ton work truck, if you catch my drift. It really doesn’t matter in the end how much of a run up you’ve had, what matters is what you get to keep. If I had a penny for every time I’ve had someone bring in their old 401k statement or brokerage statements from another firm and tell me “what the value used to be ….” with a sad and bewildered look in their eye, I’d be a rich woman. Well then, I say “Let’s don’t do that again!

Claremore’s famous restaurant and tearoom offers a one-of-a-kind experience. By Carol Beck-Round
Most people don’t like change, but when Margo Stewart and the staff at Claremore’s famous Pink House decide to shake up the menu with specials or add new items to the regular menu, customers don’t mind a bit. Whether it’s a new entrée or dessert, there’s always something fresh to anticipate at the restaurant, which is located in a Victorian-era house near downtown Claremore’s historic district. Stewart purchased the restaurant and tearoom in 2007 and set about to continue the traditions that make the popular dining place a northeastern Oklahoma destination for those who love not only the tasty made-from-scratch food, but also the cozy atmosphere. Specials are on the menu each day, but now, says Stewart, some of those specials will begin appearing on the menu as regular options. For example, a hefty BLT, often popular with male diners, will become a staple.
“We’re always trying new recipes,” says Stewart. With four quiches, two specialty casseroles, chicken salad and other sandwiches, fresh crisp salads, homemade soups and desserts like baked fudge, there are plenty of choices to satisfy anyone’s palate. After the first of the year, The Pink House staff will begin offering cooking and baking classes, according to Shari Beguin, catering director and Stewart’s daughter. “I will be teaching classes on how to make pie dough and scones. We will be making whole pies during the class, and while our pies are baking, we will have a social time with tea and scones.” Other classes will be offered, depending on the interest generated. “We encourage those who are interested to visit our Facebook page and let us know what classes you would like to see us offer,” she says. Classes will be offered in the evening with prices based on the supplies needed for the project. Customers are also
encouraged to “like” the restaurant on Facebook and check for each day’s specials. “Recently, we offered free half-baked fudge for the day,” says Stewart. Because Stewart is also passionate about getting more people to drink tea, The Pink House offers High Tea,

parties and other events after hours, Monday through Saturday only. Events must be booked in advance. Kids’ birthday parties will resume after the first of the year. To schedule an afterhour party, contact Stewart for more information and guidelines. Holidays are also special times at The Pink House, with pumpkin pies and pumpkin cake recently featured during the Thanksgiving holidays. “We also have many specialized cakes and pies for Christmas,” says Stewart. OOn the Field Again Recovering from surgery, football players credit Summit Physical Therapy staff with return to the game for their senior year.
By Carol Beck-Round
Varsity football players Daniel Moniz and Zane McElroy both suffered debilitating athletic injuries requiring surgery, and eventually physical therapy, to get them back in shape and on the field for their senior year. The two talented athletes play for different teams – Moniz for Claremore Sequoyah and McElroy for Collinsville – but their path to recovery led them to Summit Physical Therapy, where hard work, determination and a can-do attitude helped the two quarterbacks from missing their last year of high school football. Moniz, who also plays free safety for the Sequoyah Eagles, was playing defense in spring ball practice earlier this year when he says he turned the wrong way. “I heard a popping, snapping sound,” he says, “and I thought, ‘not again.’” Familiar with the sound – because it was not the first time Moniz had suffered this type of injury, he says, “I had completely torn my ACL and partially torn my meniscus on my left leg when I turned the wrong way that day. I had done the
same thing on my right knee when I was in eighth grade, so I knew what it was.” Moniz found himself once again in surgery to repair the damage. Two weeks later, he was in physical therapy at Summit. “I spent almost four months getting therapy at Summit and doing daily exercises at home,” he adds. “I already knew the exercises and knew what I had to do. I was driven to be back out there on the field.” Returning to the field exactly one day shy of four months after his injury, Moniz was cautious because he didn’t want to reinjure the knee. “I had dealt with this before and I knew my limits,” he adds. “The hardest part was getting back in shape, getting my stamina back, because I had gained 10 pounds before I began physical therapy.” Moniz, who is being recruited by major college football teams, highly recommends Summit Physical Therapy. “Since they knew me, they pushed me to do more,” he says. “The staff is friendly and caring. They know what they’re doing and
I am back to normal or better.” McElroy, who plays quarterback for the Collinsville Cardinals, began playing football during his elementary years. His shoulder injury, eventually leading to surgery and physical therapy, “actually was an accumulation over time,” he says. However, last fall, during the 3rd quarter of the last game of the season, McElroy fell on his right shoulder – his throwing arm. “I heard and felt it pop after the play,” he says. He didn’t seek medical help at first, but after the 2012 basketball and golf season, he was back in spring football practice when the shoulder popped out of place again. He had torn the labrum in half. Two weeks after surgery, McElroy was also in physical therapy to recover and get back on the field in time for his senior year. Like Moniz, he knew the secret to recovery was hard work and determination, requiring not only coming to Summit five days a week for therapy but also doing exercises at home. McElroy

still comes to Summit two evenings a week for therapy but was able to play in his first game against Coweta during week seven of the season. “He even earned a nomination for the Tulsa World’s Player of the Week his first week back,” says Sean Cox, a registered physical therapist and co-owner of Summit. “Both of these young men are gifted athletes with good character. They are leaders and very focused on the field,” he adds. McElroy, who was referred to Summit Physical
Therapy by an Oklahoma City PT, says, “Summit cares. They made me want to feel like I could excel and not just give me a bunch of exercises to do,” he says. “Sean even came to one of my football games to watch me play. That meant a lot to me.”

SShe’s Back Dancing
Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helps patient Ramona Wimp get her life back.
By Carol Beck-Round
Ramona Wimp is a selfdefined go-getter. Three years ago, however, Ramona, who is now in her early 50s, began experiencing excruciating pain in her legs and back. “I couldn’t even walk across a parking lot without pain,” she says. Ramona, who had spent her life in active pursuits like horseback riding, dancing and playing with her two daughters, suddenly found
herself incapacitated, unable not only to enjoy her usual activities, but also unable to take care of her family. “When I got home in the evening from work, I had to use my hands to lift my legs, one at a time, out of the car,” she adds. “I could barely climb the steps to our front door.” After arriving home, Ramona often found herself curled in a fetal position,
trying to fight the pain. “I couldn’t even clean my house,” she says. “The pain affected every area of my life, including driving. I couldn’t drive very far without excruciating pain.” An optimistic and outgoing woman by nature, Ramona continued to smile at work, greeting those who walked through the doors of Claremore’s Goodwill, where she is a customer service man-

ager. However, the smile hid the pain she fought daily. “My co-workers were so great,” she says. “They worked with me, allowing me to sit on a stool behind the counter as a cashier when I couldn’t do my regular work.” Some days, she couldn’t even manage that. “The pain would get the best of me sometimes and I’d have to leave work.” Because she had never had a back injury or been involved in an accident, Ramona couldn’t understand why she was in so much pain. “I had ridden horses a lot when I was younger,” she explains. “I’d been bucked and kicked but never had any pain.” In the past, she had also competed in 5K races, leading to knee trouble and a procedure to offer some relief. “I had a lot of wear and tear on my knees,” she adds, “but I couldn’t see how that could affect my back.” Ramona had been to different doctors, including 20 sessions with a chiropractor. “I had also been to an orthopedic surgeon,” she says. “I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs, so I asked him about my options.” Seeing the specialist revealed problems with degenerative discs in her back. “He is the one who suggested spinal decompression as an option, but I still waited for awhile,” she says. A visit and several tests with Dr. Dwight J. Korgan at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma eventually led to her giving spinal decompression a try. “I am so glad I
Page 9
did,” she says. “It literally gave me my life back.” Before Ramona finally made the decision to try IDD Therapy, she was at work one day when Ebony Jones, the office technician for Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, saw her suffering from muscle spasms. “Even though I had a smile on my face, Ebony saw I was in pain by the way I moved slowly around the store,” she says. “She convinced me to move ahead with the spinal decompression.” After 20 treatments, which she began this past January, Ramona says, “I can’t believe how good I feel. I’m back to my old self, enjoying those things I couldn’t do before.” One thing this energetic mother does is keep up with her daughters, ages 12 and 14. “They are both active in afterschool activities that involve my driving them to lessons and other appointments, Monday through Friday,” she says. “Without pain, I can now enjoy driving them to the places they need to be. I couldn’t do that before I had spinal decompression.” Ramona encourages anyone suffering from back pain to see if spinal decompression is an option. “It gave me a new lease on life.” For more information, contact

GGet in the Holiday Spirit Let Wine Down Spirits in Claremore help with the beverage selection at your upcoming party.
By Cassie Woods
Wine Down Spirits opened in Claremore’s Renaissance Shopping Center in May of 2012. Since that time, it has been serving the Claremore community by providing a great selection of wines, beers and spirits, as well as excellent customer service. After working in the insurance industry for more than 30 years, Melinda Kennedy decided to help her
son Marcus pursue his dream of owning a liquor store. Being from Claremore and familiar with the community, they opted to open the only liquor store on the west side of the railroad tracks. The Kennedys, along with partner Gary Miller, have done very well with the store in the year and a half it’s been open. “Marcus had wanted to own a liquor store since

before he was even old enough to do so,” said Melinda. “This was an opportunity for us to do something together that I knew he really wanted to try. And on top of how nice it’s been to work with my son, we are very happy with how successful the store has been.” The laidback atmosphere of the store with its large wood display cases lining the walls is very welcoming to shoppers. Several racks line the center aisles, making it easy to browse the wine options in the clean and comfortable store. With everything from whites, reds, champagne and dessert wines, there is sure to be something for everyone. Some of the local varieties include wines from Summerside Vineyards in Vinita, Sparks Vineyard in Sparks, and Whispering Vines in Tulsa. In addition to the wines it sells, Wine
Down Spirits offers a very large selection of beer including Leinenkugel’s, Tank 7, Boulevard and Samuel Adams, as well as local brands, such as Marshall and the popular Rock Hard Root Beer made in Oklahoma City. And of course, all the popular brands of liquor and spirits are also available at the store. “We try to carry a little bit of everything to make sure we are serving all of our customers,” said Melinda. “We are also able to special order just about anything we might not have in stock. And, depending on the availability with our distributors, we can usually have those special orders here the next business day.” The large selection isn’t the only thing different about Wine Down Spirits. It also offers great weekly specials. Every Tuesday, customers get a discount on all wine and every Wednesday, a discount
on liquor. The owners offer these specials as a way to show their appreciation to their loyal customers. “We love our customers,” said Melinda. “There are so many extremely nice and sweet people in this community. We have customers who check in when they are going to be out of town to let us know not to worry about them, and I have even had a customer send me flowers on my birthday. It’s great to know there are people who really do care.” Wine Down Spirits is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information on selection or specials offered, search Facebook for Wine Down Spirits.

RRice Hosts Annual Remembrance Service Rice Funeral Service & Cremation Center will help the community honor their lost loved ones at the annual Tree of Remembrance Service December 8.
By Sheryl Sowell
Kathy Dopp and her staff at Rice Funeral Service & Cremation Center are once again preparing for the annual Tree of Remembrance Service. This special event will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral
Service & Cremation Center, 631 E. Will Rogers Blvd. in Claremore. Though Christmas is traditionally a time of joy and celebration, it can also hold much grief and stress for families who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
Rice Funeral Service began this service 24 years ago as a way for families to honor the memory of a loved one, meet others who are experiencing a sense of loss, and be reminded that even though their loved ones are gone, memories can be

comforting and are there forever. “As in years past, anyone who would be comforted and helped through participation is welcomed at the Tree of Remembrance Service,” said Dopp. “The service is not just for people who have had a recent loss. Nor does it matter if Rice was entrusted with the arrangements. There are a number of our friends from the community who come every year. This is a way to include our loved ones in the holiday season.” Committed to the idea that sharing with others provides a special form of healing, all of the staff at Rice will be on hand to ensure that the afternoon events run smoothly. In addition to owner Kathy Dopp, Rick Fortner and Tommie Graham will greet attendees as they have in many of the past years, along with their coworkers Kenny DeLozier, Jason Rouk, Haley DeLozier, Gina Wilson, Chandra Krafft and Eric McElwain, who have all been busy preparing for what has become a holiday
tradition at Rice. During the service a tree will be decorated with ornaments inscribed with the deceased loved one's name. Each family hangs their ornament and is given time to speak of their loved one. Participants are asked to notify Rice Funeral Service at (918) 341-0376 so ornaments can be personalized in advance. The evening will also include musical selections by Ray Teakell. For many years Rice has partnered with the Toys for Tots toy drive, and will do so again this year. Those who wish to participate may bring a new, unwrapped toy to place beneath the tree. The toys will be delivered to the toy room to provide Christmas gifts for needy children in the community.

DDon’t Wreck the Holidays December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
By Carol Beck-Round
As we all know, it is against the law to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle after having one drink too many at happy hour or using illegal drugs. If caught driving drunk or high, penalties in Rogers County can include jail time, court fees and fines, and driving restrictions. Many are not aware, however, that driving after taking prescription medicine can also lead to impaired driving and the related criminal charges. People often assume that only
illegal drug use could result in a DUI (driving under the influence) charge. “What Healthy Community Partnership members want to let everyone know is that taking any sort of substance (alcohol, medication or illicit drugs) impairs your ability to operate your vehicle is breaking the law," said Trisha DeLozier, HCP certified prevention specialist. December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and focuses on both

drunk driving and the growing problem of drugged driving. Drugged driving has been overlooked for a number of years, but research shows it may be responsible for more than 20 percent of car crashes. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office reports that in 2012 there were 19 drivers under the age of 21 with a drug-related driver condition and passengers in their vehicle. Fortunately, there were no passenger fatalities, but 12 were seriously injured. In the same year, there were 106 drivers age 21 and older with a drugrelated driver condition and passengers in the vehicle. One passenger was killed and 81 others were seriously injured. To demonstrate further the increased problem of drugged driving, a national survey shows drugs were present more than seven times as frequently as alcohol among weekend nighttime drivers in the United States. “One problem,” says DeLozier, “is that law enforcement officers currently have no technology to help them identify drugged drivers. With alcohol a Breathalyzer is useful, but new funding is
being sought on the federal level to research methods such as a saliva test for the drugged driving suspects.” In addition, to combat the problem, drug recognition trainings are becoming more common and officers can become certified as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). “‘Don’t Wreck the Holidays’ is a message we hope to promote this month,” said Amy Graham, a project director at Volunteers for Youth and an HCP member. “Impaired driving can affect every one of us, even if we are not the one driving under the influence,” she added. Conservative estimates show drugged driving is responsible for 440,000 injuries and $59.9 billion in costs each year. Of the people who died in impaired crashes (other than drivers) 1,612 were passengers, 1,049 were occupants of other vehicles, 710 were pedestrians or bicyclists, and 91 were child passengers. Impaired driving fatalities occur all year-round, but data shows that the holiday season is a particularly dangerous time on the roadways. Many
of these tragedies could have been avoided. Most occurred because of a person’s bad decision to drive after drinking alcohol and often combining that with prescription medications or other drugs. “When you choose to drive while impaired, you are endangering yourself, your passengers, and those on the road around you,” Graham added. Volunteers for Youth and Healthy Community Partnership are working to bring awareness about this preventable tragedy by providing window clings and stickers to Rogers County high school students for distribution to friends and parents. “We ask that you help to share this message this holiday season,” said Graham. “‘Don’t Wreck the Holidays: Pledge to never accept a ride with an impaired driver.’” For more information, contact

Eddie Curran, of Nowata, recently joined RCB Bank as its new VP Business Services Group Manager. This is a new job position at RCB Bank and Curran will serve as a leader and sales coach for the bank’s Business Services Group. The Business Services Group works closely with business customers on RCB Bank’s variety of money management solutions, including Merchant Card Services (credit card
processing), Remote Deposit Capture, Direct Deposit and Online Banking, Mobile Deposit, Account View, Direct Debit, Lock Box Services, Positive Pay and Pay Cards. The five-member Group which serves all of RCB Bank’s 33 locations in Oklahoma and Kansas aims to make business banking convenient, thus allowing more time with their customers, according to Curran. “When the opportunity

to work at RCB Bank came up, I couldn’t pass it up,” said Curran. “RCB’s approach and philosophy of building relationships with customers rather than pushing widgets matched mine and gives me the chance to utilize my skills in a new and challenging format.” Previously Curran worked for IBT, and for the last 14 years he has worked with banks in a consulting/training capacity as well as in the design and construction of branch projects. RCB Bank was one of his clients at IBT; Curran helped RCB Bank with the design of its new branches in Stillwater and Edmond and various remodels in other communities. Because of that partnership and Curran’s proven performance as a team leader, he was approached by RCB Bank when the new position came about. “Our interaction with Eddie in his previous position proved his customer service abilities,” said Roger Mosier, President and CEO of RCB Bank. His approach to customer service mirrors ours
at RCB Bank, make a connection, build a relationship and be mindful of the needs of our customers.” Curran currently lives in Nowata and enjoys everything outdoors: working in the yard, hunting, and spending time at the lake. He has two kids, his scientist and experimental cook, Jozi, 11, and his athlete of the family, Vance, 9. Curran sits on the Nowata Boys and Girls Club Board where he helps run Tball, softball and baseball programs as well as various fundraising events like their annual Golf Tournament and Princess Tea Party. “Everything starts with the kids,” he said. “I believe that it is important that every child be given every opportunity to succeed and that’s our objective for the kids of Nowata County. By providing them a safe place to get a meal, help with homework, partner up with a mentor, gain life skills or just have a good time, they see that there are people out there who care and that they can succeed in life no matter their circumstances.”
He is also a partner in Chameleon Sounds, a DJ company that does a lot of charity work providing music and lights for events in the community like all the Nowata Boy & Girls Club dances and the Nowata, Osage and Washington County Relay For Life. RCB Bank is an Oklahoma-owned and operated community bank with assets totaling more than $2 billion and 33 convenient locations stretching across Oklahoma and into Kansas. Founded in 1936, RCB Bank is committed to serving its communities with conservative banking practices and progressive banking products. to Improving Your CCommitted Buying Experience Bill Knight Ford maintains focus of making the total automotive experience outstanding for every customer. By Duane Blankenship
Bill Knight Ford is an awardwinning Ford dealership that keeps its sights on improving the customer experience. Selected as the recipient of the Ford Motor Company’s Presidents Award for four consecutive years, Bill Knight
Ford continues to receive national recognition as one of the leading Ford dealerships in Oklahoma and the United States. Mr. Knight and his dealership continue raising the industry standard bar each year. “We’ve made a lot
Owner Bill Knight, Service Manager Bill Duensing and General Manager Kelly Summers are proud of the ever-evolving changes focusing on outstanding customer services that keep Bill Knight Ford a significant leader in the automotive industry.
of changes over the years as we continually strive to make buying a car and related services as simple and enjoyable as humanly possible.” Bill Knight Ford recently opened up their indoor showroom to make it more user-friendly and inviting, plus create more space for displaying vehicles. Bill Knight Ford also recently completed construction of an all new and separate Fleet Center to house a revamped fleet sales department. “We identified and responded to the needs of companies in the metro Tulsa area,” said Mr. Knight. “As the economy has begun recovering and new home builds have increased, many companies are now replacing their fleets with new vehicles.” Knight has added five full-time sales staff members with a vision of serving the needs of that market. The automotive detail department will also be
housed in the new Fleet Center. Knight says the dealership’s detail department had outgrown its current space. With the department now located in the new Fleet Center, detail has effectively tripled their square footage. They operate state-of-the-art automotive detailing equipment to ensure total customer satisfaction. With the move to the new space, car washing capabilities have also been improved and they still provide a no-charge car wash to every service customer. Those interested in adding to their personal or company fleet will want to check out the new Ford Transit Connect. The Transit Connect is a compact cargo van that’s big on capability. It can maneuver tight city streets, including letting you parallel park with relative ease. Loading and unloading the Transit Connect is made easier with its low-load height and a choice of two rear cargo door angles. It also has large side panels to make sure company name, logo and graphics are prominently displayed. According to Mr. Knight, “The Transit Connect is the ideal compact
cargo van.” The Transit Connect has a maximum payload of 1,600 pounds, and it is easy to customize the interior to fit specific needs. If your goal is to move people, the Transit Connect Wagon will seat up to five passengers and still provide storage behind the second-row seat. The Transit Connect is very accommodating and attractive. It is available with SYNC® so you can stay in touch with hands-free calling and much more. While the Transit Connect is a ruggedly built truck, certified to Ford Light Commercial Vehicle Durability Standards, it also offers the comfort and efficiency of a car. “A” rated with the Better Business Bureau, you’ll want to visit Bill Knight Ford whatever your automotive needs may be. They pride themselves on professionalism and continually make changes that enable them to create long-term relationships with their customers. For more information, contact

STOP THE SNORING!
Snoring is more than a nuisance - it can harm both your health and your relationships! It's not only loud and disruptive it wakes both you and your partner. Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, a serious and even life threatening disorder. Sleep apnea causes a drop in blood oxygen levels, which places stress on your heart and raises blood pressure. Sleep apnea also keeps both of you from properly entering REM sleep, the most restorative stage of nightly sleep.

CCheck Off Your List All at Once You can finish your Christmas shopping early with the unique selection of Surceé Gifts and Home.
By Susan Erler
Have you ever noticed that some people just seem to be more organized when it comes to the holidays? By December 3rd, they are lounging in front of the fireplace, sipping hot chocolate and enjoying the season. “What is their secret?” you may ask. Instead of fighting the crowds at the mall or at the big box stores, they do their holiday gift shopping at
Surceé Gifts and Home in Owasso. Located at 9455 Owasso Expressway in the Tyann Plaza, Surceé offers unique and one-of-a-kind items in every price range. Laura Sanders, owner, brings in the hottest new holiday items for you and your home, and it is her goal each year to make the season fun and easy for all of

her customers. “With Christmas right around the corner, customers will find a huge selection of fabulous gifts sure to please everyone on their list,” says Laura. “And we offer free gift wrapping with every purchase. Just walk in and choose an item, then walk out with a beautifully wrapped package. One stop and you are done!” As you browse the store, take notice of the individual themes created within. Laura and her team of experts have created specific vignettes, each filled with gifts perfect for teachers or anyone else you want to show appreciation to. Most are under $25. Themes include Nutcrackers, Woodland Wonderland, Inspirational, and Vintage, and each tree is filled with gorgeous ornaments and décor items. Do you have a college student or sports fan fanatic on your list? They have an entire area decked out in orange and red, devoted to unique Oklahoma State University and University of Oklahoma T-shirts, scarves, ornaments, picture frames, jewelry and more. The selection is impressive, but items are selling fast. Hurry in before they are gone!
Cookbooks are always a great gift, and Surceé has many to choose from, including all six of the wildly popular “Gathering of Friends” series and many written by Oklahoma’s own Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. Stop by and pick up several. Laura loves helping customers find the perfect gift. "Customers can come in anytime to fill out their Wish List," explains Laura. "Send your loved ones in and we will help them shop from your personalized list. Of course, gift wrapping is included." Be sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, December 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. "Santa and his elves will be here, so this is a fun night for everyone. Bring your camera and capture some magical holiday memories." Holiday shopping has never been easier. Surceé is showcasing a new line of jewelry, Lenny and Eva, which has been so popular they can’t keep it in stock. This vintage inspired line allows you to personalize everything from cuff bracelets to pendants with charms, beads, and sayings. So fun and so “you.” For a special lady on your list, surround her in the softness and comfort of

By Deanna Rebro
Let The Hamlet make your holiday meals, parties, and gift-giving quick, easy and delicious. Since 1986, The Hamlet has been a Tulsa tradition in many homes. There are hams available everywhere, but only The Hamlet features the exclusive
honey cured, spiral sliced honey-kissed™ ham that is always imitated, but never duplicated. The Hamlet hams have earned a reputation for being “real ham!” Owners Bryan and Shannon Hester are looking forward to greeting the many
customers who come back year after year. “Please order early,” urges Shannon, the daughter of a previous owner, Gordon Pendergraft. “As soon as you know how many people you will be serving. That way you will be sure to get exactly what you want.”

The Hamlet also offers whole smoked turkeys or boneless, spiral-sliced, allwhite-meat honey-kissed turkey breasts. The smoked turkeys range from 10 to 15 pounds and turkey breasts are 4 to 5 pounds. All these meats are fully cooked and ready to eat. They’re always a big hit at any holiday meal or party, and most appreciated by any hostess. The Hamlet hams or turkeys make excellent corporate gifts. Corporate discounts are offered for orders of 10 or more. All the meats can be shipped anywhere in the United States or delivered locally. Custom-made gift baskets, with or without a ham, start at $25. Gift cards in any amount are also popular among individuals and corporations. Happy recipients can choose a ham, turkey or whatever they want, whenever they want it. They can even use gift cards in the deli that features The Hamlet honey-kissed ham and turkey and a variety of Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, cold sandwiches, grilled sandwiches, wraps, salads, ham and beans, chili and soup. Or they can use
the gift cards in the new patio grill at the 91st and Sheridan location. Menu selections include exclusive Hamlet appetizers, steaks and gourmet burgers. “All our meats are the same premium quality as our famous hams,” says Bryan. Ceiling fans, ceiling-mounted heaters and a wood burning fireplace create comfortable, year-round al fresco seating for an extraordinarily fine meal, Monday through Saturday. Dine in or order your meals to go. For office parties or unexpected guests, a variety of party trays that serve up to 100 are available for pick up or delivery to your door. For parties of 25 or more, catering can be arranged. When you want only the best for your family and guests, get a honey-kissed ham from The Hamlet. Don’t forget dessert to top off a great meal! This holiday season The Hamlet is featuring pies and cheesecakes by order. For added convenience, you can order online from your computer, smart phone or tablet. For more information, contact

LLarger, Brighter Displays for 2013 Enjoy two free drive through events in Muskogee this holiday season – Castle Christmas at The Castle of Muskogee and The Garden of Lights at Honor Heights Park
By Sheryl Sowell
Celebrate the best of family holiday traditions at The Castle of Muskogee! Take a leisurely drive through Castleton Village, filled with over 2,000 holiday inflatables and thousands of colorful lights. The drive through is free and donations are
gratefully accepted. The Castle’s additional events are open November 28, 29, 30, December 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, and every night December 12 through December 31. Please check the calendar at www.okcastle.com for a schedule of each night’s activities.
The Grinch and Father Christmas will make special appearances at The Castle of Muskogee this year.
Outside The Castle, you can take a hayride or a carriage ride through the Village, ride the ponies or the camel, and visit the petting zoo. Stop inside The Castle for old-fashioned family holiday activities. Bring your kids to make ornaments in Santa’s workshop, warm up by the fireplace, and plan your visit with Father Christmas – and keep your eyes open for The Mean Green One, too! Stop in for some holiday shopping with a variety of merchants, and pick up something unique for yourself or a loved one. Get fireworks for New Year’s Eve celebrations and items from The Christmas Shoppe for your own holiday displays. Join us in the Royal Garden Cafe for a light supper or snack, hot chocolate and treats, and great company. Sit and enjoy holiday movies for the whole family. Father Christmas will be at the Castle on Fridays and Saturdays through December 21. There is no cost to talk to
Father Christmas, and pictures will be available for a nominal fee. Please check the calendar at www.okcastle.com for exact dates. The 2013 Castle Christmas displays range from four feet in height to a towering 20 feet tall. You’ll see all of your favorite Christmas characters including Santa, the elves, many snowmen, reindeer, penguins, polar bears and more. Also you will see many of your favorite fun characters including Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Scooby Doo, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, the Grinch, Elmo, Frosty the Snowman, Homer and Bart Simpson, plus many more. “This is the world’s largest display of inflatables,” says Matt Hiller, vice president and advertising director of the Castle of Muskogee. “Bring the whole family for a fun, wholesome evening to celebrate the holidays.” In nearby Honor Heights Park, the Garden of Lights attracts thousands of visitors.
The celebration includes a free drive-through display of over a million shimmering lights displayed throughout the park. Internationally known for its Azalea Festival, Honor Heights Park draws up to a half million visitors annually to its 122 acres, which are planted with more than 30,000 azalea bushes and thousands of trees, beautifully situated among the park’s scenic hilltop drive. Christmas lights are placed on trees, bushes, and structures throughout the park to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, waterfalls, and ponds. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. nightly, and the event is free. Both drive-through events are open nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Stop Into the District dream was born. Since neither of the ladies had any previous retail experience they decided to start small with a booth in a downtown antique store selling furniture paint along with pieces they had restored. It wasn’t long before they were ready to open their own storefront. When the former Nesting Necessities opened a year ago, the original plan was to offer clothing and jewelry through consignors, while Susan and Cari personally offered home decor, furniture paint, refinished furniture and painting classes. But after just a couple of months, the store owners began purchasing their own clothing and accessories, and home decor, and by the end of January, the pair owned 90 percent of the product offered in the boutique. “There were several reasons we decided to change the name of the store,” said Susan. “Our focus has really changed from a home store to a boutique and we think it’s important that our name reflects that. Nesting Necessities just no longer fits. Additionally, we often had people thinking we were a maternity store.”
continued from page 1
“We want our name to reflect the trendy boutique that the former Nesting Necessities has morphed into,” said Cari. “We think The District on Main does just that. And we decided there was no better time to make the change than on our first anniversary.” The District on Main offers lots of great gift ideas for those on your holiday shopping list. The store has a terrific assortment of accessories, gift items and home décor, as well as a large selection of clothing, from sweaters to dresses to leggings. Some of the store’s newest brands are Brighton, Fossil and Ivy Jane. Other favorites available at The District on Main include Tribal, Miss Me, Lane Boots, Mud Pie, Harley & Maudes and many more great brand names. With sizes from junior’s small up to 3X and prices on clothes ranging from $10 to $120, there is something for everyone. The store also still carries Maison Blanche Paints for those interested in refurbishing furniture. The District on Main is a family affair. When Susan and Cari needed extra help, they hired Susan’s daughters, Madison and Jenna, and Cari’s
daughter, Taylor, to pitch in at the store. "Our husbands help in any capacity they can and are our biggest support," says Susan. Additionally, two part-time employees, Katrina Pope and Ally Johnson, complete the staff at The District on Main. The women who work in the store believe the level of customer service they offer is exemplary. They each make it a personal goal to provide each customer with an opportunity to feel better about themselves when they leave than when they walked in the door. “We want our customers to feel special and know we care about them,” said Susan. “We understand that confidence is key to a woman’s happiness and whether she is looking for an elegant business dress or a tunic and leg-
gings, we want to help her find it.” “When women feel good about themselves, they stand taller, prouder and more confident,” said Cari. “Everyone will notice and that’s what we hope to help our customers achieve.” For information on extended holiday hours, items available in the store, or current sales and specials, such as the upcoming “Last-Minute Shopper” online special, search Facebook for The District on Main. Tips for Safer Shopping Online continued from page 1 statement to look at, one account to monitor and one company to call if there is a problem.” RCB Bank adds: Consider getting a prepaid VISA card to use for online shopping. Not only can you set a holiday budget and put only that amount of money on the card, it will protect your debit card (check card), which is tied directly to your bank account, from online hackers. Be sure to ask your bank about any fees or hidden charges that may be associated with a prepaid VISA card. Monitor your statements. “When you order online, you automatically get a confirmation email,” White said. “I love this, as it normally has a tracking number on it. I do my part to keep on top of my account and make sure I am only charged what I am supposed to. I can’t count on the company to watch out for me. I am one customer; they have thousands.” RCB Bank adds: Many online merchants will ask you to store your card information and its security features (such as the CVV code or expiration date) to save time on your next purchase. This is
not a good idea since someone could use your card if they obtain the credentials you use to make online purchases with the merchant. Monitor your bank account transactions regularly and report any unauthorized or suspicious activity to your bank or credit card company immediately. Track packages from official sites like UPS.com or FedEx.com. Do not click on messages sent via email or text. Clicking on links can put your money and your identity in danger. Set a spending limit. “It is easy to shop online and get carried away,” said White. “Remember you still have to pay the bill when it comes.” To learn more about Internet security and fraud awareness, you can call RCB Bank at 855-BANK-RCB. TFI’s goal for Rogers County is to secure 20 to 30 more foster homes. “These children should have a safe family home to live in,” he adds. “We are committed to helping find these families and to also provide a high level of support to them.” TFI Family Connections uses a model of support founded on the principle that foster families deserve a professional, consistent worker of their own dedicated to supporting them as foster parents. “Our foster care family workers are knowledgeable, qualified and caring,” says Cecil. In addition to the support of a dedicated, professional, personal case worker located close to the foster family home, TFI offers 24-hour oncall support, reimbursement payments, local monthly
support meetings, free comprehensive, ongoing training, a multimedia resource library, respite services, liability insurance, and independent advocacy to support the foster home and the children being served. TFI also offers annual foster parent retreats, informative monthly newsletters specifically for foster parents, a foster family mentor program, foster parent appreciation events and holiday parties. “Most importantly,” says Cecil, “we provide the necessary communication and support so that each child and foster family can thrive.” Foster families who “provide love, stability and guidance for a child in need of care will and do change a life for the good,” he adds. “While you or your family may not be able to bring foster children
into your home, you may know someone who might be,” says Cecil. “It’s the power of one. If everyone found one foster family, we would have enough to support the children and families in this community – and it’s an ever-growing need.” If you know of a church or organization interested in hosting Cecil as a speaker to explain more about TFI Family Connections and the foster care program, please contact him at (866) 543-9810, extension 3043 or by email at jcecil@tfifamily.org.

Christview Christian Church, located at 2525 S. Garnett, is pleased to present the 15th annual Bethlehem Walk to the Tulsa community. The Bethlehem Walk is a 45minute guided outdoor walking tour through an exciting and realistic Nativity scene. The path is lighted,

soldiers, beggars, lepers, heavenly angels, shepherds, and Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child. The church maintains a costume room with hundreds of costumes made as authentically as possible. Live camels, sheep and donkeys add to the authenticity of the greatest story ever told. Reservations are requested, and large groups are welcome. Admission is free. The Bethlehem Walk attracts thousands of attendees each year from a six-state area. Individuals and groups congregate in the church’s auditorium. Everyone is assigned to a family and a guide who is also the “family head.” Some participants will be given Roman coins with which to pay taxes as they enter Nazareth. You may even be hassled by Roman guards along the road as you march to Bethlehem. You will soon figure out, everyone becomes part of the production. A tax collector receives your family’s taxes,
www.ValueNews.com and your family representative will be asked to “make his mark” in the record book. Don’t try to hold back any coins for yourself – tax collectors can get nasty! Along your route, you will encounter angels with silvery white robes and shepherds kneeling in fields. You will visit three wise men and their camels, and will be asked if you have seen the star in the east. As you enter the bazaar, you will enjoy tasting some of the food samples. The bazaar area houses several shops with baskets, jewelry, fruit and nuts, rugs and more. Half the fun of the evening is interacting with the characters, especially when the shepherds invite you to join them at their camp to enjoy their nice warm fire. As you journey on, you will likely see beggars and lepers. Please don’t touch! To do so is “punishable by death.” You will discover that there are no rooms available in Bethelem. One innkeeper announces that he actually put up a man and his wife with child in a stable down the street. It was the last available vacancy in the city. Near the end of your walk, you will fast-forward 33 years as you encounter three crosses on a hillside and visit the tomb area where the body of Christ the Savior has
gone missing. An angel will appear and read from the scripture. At the conclusion of your walk, you are invited back to Fellowship Hall, where you will visit homes and courtyards of ancient times. Children may make a fabric doll, play games, and pet farm animals, while everyone is welcome to enjoy cider and cookies. The evening is entertaining and educational for all, plus a tremendous outreach to the Tulsa community by Christview Christian Church. The reservation hotline is (918) 232-3587. Operators are on duty from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening, or you may send a text message anytime and an operator will contact you and schedule your time. Please advise the operator if someone in your group is disabled and will need a golf cart. You may also visit www.christview.org, click the Bethlehem Walk picture or link, and make your reservation. The purpose of the Gifts of Hope party is providing Christmas Gifts to children that are in need around the Tulsa community. The Gifts of Hope is a great group of volunteers that are dedicated to give Christmas Gifts every year. All funds and gifts will go to parents/children in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Last year Gifts of Hope gave nearly 900 gifts to the students at William Penn & Marian Anderson Elementary, 4 food baskets and gift cards were given to families. Also, 10 bikes were donated to students. The students earned tickets for a drawing of the bikes. To get a ticket the students had to maintain a positive attitude and display leadership in the class rooms thru out the school year. This year the goal is 1000 gifts and 10 bikes. We will be going to North Tulsa apartment complexes.

Your Car Need DDoes a Shiny New Coat? New owner of Auto Paint Supply in Claremore, Brad McKisick, continues previous owner’s commitment to service. By Carol Beck-Round
Brad McKisick has been involved in the auto paint and body industry since high school – that’s almost 37 years. Therefore, when the opportunity arose to purchase an auto paint supply store in Claremore, the Rogers County native jumped at the chance to continue the previous owner’s commitment to good service and quality, affordable products. “The previous owners started their business on Highway 20 East in 1996,” McKisick says. “They moved into the current location at 125 W. 1st St. – almost directly across from the Claremore Police Department – 12 years ago.” Auto Paint Supply had already established a friendly reputation for taking care of their customers’ needs when it comes to finding the right paint and supplies to complete the job. “We are committed to the same,” he adds. “We want to help people finish their project at a reasonable price.” McKisick took ownership of the hometown business on
May 1, 2013. “We are family owned and take pride in offering one-on-one help to our customers,” he says. “We have a knowledgeable staff that goes to great lengths to make sure our customers are satisfied.” Sometimes, research is required to find the code needed to get the correct color match, especially on older vehicles. When the color code cannot be located on the vehicle itself, the staff turns to a color code book as well as the computer to find the formula necessary to create the perfect paint match for each customer’s needs. McKisick believes it’s important to offer advice and steer the customer in the right direction, whether it is the correct paint or the other supplies needed for the job. “We get a lot of do-it-yourselfers in here,” he says. This is especially important for doit-yourselfers who may have not completed an auto body project for 20 or 30 years. “EPA and Hazmat standards have changed,” he says. “In
fact, the industry has changed a lot. We are able to help them understand the new standards.” Auto Paint Supply offers Matrix paint products and is the only authorized dealer for this area. “It is very good paint for the price and its quality is comparable to the top five in the industry,” he says. “In fact, it is the only one totally made in America and is substantially less expensive than the other five, but we believe it is the best product.” Customers will also find everything at Auto Paint Supply to complete the job from start to finish, including sandpaper, bonding, Flash, masking paper, Dura-Blocks, primers, thinner, paint guns and much more. In addition to Matrix, brands the store carries include 3M, Norton, SEM and Wanda. “We’re very aware and very cautious about keeping our prices affordable,” he adds, “so our customers don’t have to drive to Tulsa.” Customers have been known

to drive from Nowata, Bartlesville, Muskogee, Tahlequah, Vinita, Locust Grove, and Owasso and from as far away as Coffeyville, Kansas to get the supplies they need to repaint their vehicle. In addition, owners of motorcycles, boats and jet skis can also purchase all of the necessary supplies to meet their painting needs. “We’ve even had several people purchase paint to redo their kitchen cabinets,” McKisick adds. “Recently, someone purchased red to do the cabinets in their house.” Auto Paint Supply is the place to find the paint and

FFeast on Cajun Cuisine
Want something delicious, flavorful and a little different for your holiday meals? Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats has you covered.
By Deanna Rebro
Every Cajun meal is a celebration in itself. And there’s only one place in Tulsa to get the best Cajun food made by real Cajuns – that’s Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats at 2101 E. 71st St. “Cajun Ed” Richard never planned on owning a meat market, much less a restaurant. His grandfather owned several restaurants and a catering company in Lafayette, Louisiana,
and he worked there in high school. He left Lafeyette after college to work for an office product company and made Tulsa his family’s home. Over the years, Cajun Ed thought more and more about getting into the food business. “It was just in the blood. My family was involved in it. I’ve always cooked, just not professionally, but I always wanted to.”
“Cajun Ed” Richard with the world-famous turducken.
In 1998, the original market opened at 81st and Lewis. Ed’s idea was to make products under Federal USDA inspection and legally ship them all over the United States. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s is one of only two federally inspected facilities in Tulsa and has a full time inspector on site daily overseeing production. The production facility in the back of the restaurant produces a wide range of products, including nearly 50 varieties of sausages, gumbo, maque choux, and etouffee. Eighteen varieties of stuffing can be ordered inside a large selection of meats, including the turducken (a chicken stuffed inside a duck, stuffed inside a turkey). You can stop by for your favorite cuts of beef and pork, rabbit, crawfish (seasonally), alligator, chicken, game hens, oysters and quail. The largest Cajun market in Tulsa offers many retail items from all over Louisiana. Cajun Ed says many Louisiana natives come in to pick up products from “home” that they can’t find anywhere else. When the current location opened six years ago, they added a cafeteria-style lunch

service that features live music daily. Two years ago they began seated dinner service. A rotating list of specials is offered each day of the week. One of Ed’s favorites is “Cajun-Mex Tuesday,” with red bean burritos, a variety of Cajun tacos, and his grandfather’s crawfish tamales. The tamales are a longtime family favorite from the catering service and were nearly lost after “Paw Paw” passed. When they could not decipher the bits and pieces of the recipe scribbled down on a scrap of paper, the family decided to get together to try to recreate it. “My wife loved the tamales. They were her favorite thing to eat in the world, so she helped us recreate it. I had parts of the recipe from my cousin, whose brother used to make them for the catering company. My brother in Florida came to town and for a week we got together and made tamales. We’d make a batch and give them to my wife, and she’d tell us ‘that wasn’t it,’ so we’d make another batch and she’d say no. I don’t know how many batches we made, but finally she said we got it right. And we all knew when we tasted them – they were super good.”
Paw Paw’s tamales are served open faced with crawfish etouffee and homemade pico. Cajun Ed is pleased to introduce the creations of his new chef, Aubrey Brune. The OSU Culinary Arts graduate has nearly 20 years of experience in various restaurants, but Cajun food is his new passion. “Aubrey adds his special touch to make some of the best food we have ever offered,” says Cajun Ed. This year you can choose your favorite from three types of cornbread dressing. Christmas morning in Louisiana means beignets are in the kitchen. Cajun Ed’s has the beignet mix and chickory coffee to go with it, or beignets and café au lait are offered from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. Place your holiday order online at www.cajuned.com or stop by the big red house just west of 71st and Lewis. For more information, contact

not just a Christian women’s event – it’s a lifestyle. The conference will be held at the Mabee Center, February 28 through March 1, 2014. Julie Clinton, president of Extraordinary Women, has spoken to hundreds of thousands of women as host of EWomen conferences all across America. A person of

deep faith, she cares passionately about seeing women live out their dreams by finding their freedom in Christ. “We as women give of ourselves all day, every day – to our husbands, children, careers and households – but we rarely give back to ourselves. This conference is our way of giving back to women, offering them a weekend away to experience hope and healing through Jesus Christ,” says Julie. “Extraordinary Women shares with all women, regardless of their religious affiliation, the love, acceptance and completeness God has for us.” The conference will include music, praise and worship, entertainment and special guest speakers. “Our speakers will discuss issues related to women, many that aren’t necessarily talked about at church on Sunday morning, such as divorce, illness and disappointment,” says Julie. The theme of this year’s conference, “The Joyful

Journey,” comes from Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” “Life is not always joyful,” says Julie, “but we must remember that the only true everlasting joy can be found through the Lord.” In addition to Julie, several other women will offer insightful and inspirational presentations at the conference. Karen Kingsbury is a USA and New York Times best-selling author and America’s top inspirational novelist, with 10 of her more than 50 novels landing at number one on national book lists. Chonda Pierce is one of the biggest selling comedians in the world today, consistently a top-selling ticketed artist of any genre. She is one of the country’s most honest artists, allowing her personal struggles to be the substance behind the laugh. Carol Kent is a popular public speaker known around the world for her compelling, humorous, and spiritually uplifting messages. Carol has been a keynote speaker for various women’s conferences and events, and she regularly appears on a variety of nationally syndicated television and radio broadcasts.

Surgeon Can YYour Make the Difference Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experiences with two surgeons. By Joshua Danker-Dake
Patsy Wessel of Oilton had a positive knee replacement operation with Dr. Ronald LaButti.
When Patsy Wessel, 73, of Oilton, Oklahoma, had knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti last year, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The difference in the two procedures, she says, was like night and day. “I had already had one surgery done, and it was very painful,” Wessel says. “I didn’t have a good experience with my first doctor, and I didn’t feel like my physical therapist did a very good job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good experience with him.” Wessel’s knee problems developed gradually, over decades, she says. “I’m 73 years old, and I’m in my 35th year in my job, where I walk and stand on cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cement floors. I’ve worked hard in my life, you know? You just wear your knees out.” Wessel says the knee replacement with Dr.
LaButti was an immeasurably better experience than her previous surgery. “Yes, I had pain – it’s always painful. But for a knee replacement, it was significantly better,” she says. “I had much less pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told me that the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, I was able to get up and walk without so much pain because of how well it was done. I wasn’t even on my cane or walker more than a week before I could walk by myself.” A big part of Wessel’s good experience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passive motion machine for physical therapy, and Wessel says it worked wonders. “Dr. LaButti sent me home with this machine: for two hours, three times a day, you put your leg in it, and it raises and works your knee. It worked wonderfully, and it
doesn’t hurt.” Wessel says her first doctor didn’t use that machine. “He had someone physically doing it, and they can hurt you. Sometimes I was crying by the time they finished. But with the machine, it didn’t hurt, and it kept the knee limber. It worked so well.” Overall, Wessel says, her experience was exceptional. “The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, and he was very nice. I’ve already recommended Dr. LaButti to a number of people, and I would recommend him to anyone.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com.
