RESTORING BALANCE IN THE BODY WITH MANUAL OSTEOPATHIC MANIPULATION

BY MACY GOODNIGHT

B

alance is what it’s all about when it comes to the body. Physical misalignment can cause pain and discomfort, and sometimes a manifestation of problems in other areas. At Restoring Body Health and Feet Unlimited, John Chatzigiannidis (D.O.M.P, C.PED, A.C.M.T) has the answer to getting everything back in line and helping his patients feel their best through Manual Osteopathic Manipulation. “This form of treatment is based on the concept that the structure of the human body influences the function,” said John. “The goal of treatment is to improve the body’s structure.” When the body is in balance, there is no added stress anywhere else in the body. When the body is not in balance, the result is a physical amplification elsewhere. “Basically, think of anything that is out of alignment,” said John. “There is always a compensation that occurs, and at this point, the body will adjust itself to compensate for that problem.” The effects can result in pain and discomfort. Manual Osteopathic Manipulation treats the entire body. There are multiple techniques, therapies, or modalities that are utilized in a customized treatment plan for a patient, depending on their needs. The therapies work on four principles: 1) The body is a unit. 2) Structure governs function. 3) The body is its own medicine chest. And 4) The rule of the artery is supreme. There are incredible benefits to 6

|

Manual Osteopathic Manipulation, in that it offers a drug-free approach to achieve total body health, it helps reduce pain and improves mobility and minimizes stress. It can also minimize tension in the body. Patients may even find relief from migraines and headaches with therapy. An initial consultation will include a complete postural study. “The patient will come in, and we will first sit and visit, and I listen to them to get to the bottom of the problem,” said John. With consultation, patients are given a full postural analysis, with all the information gathered, so a firm baseline is established. “It’s not subjective anymore, because, before modern technology, I would perform a visual evaluation, and try to explain to the patient my findings,” he said, “but with technology today, it’s very digital and comprehensive, providing visual representation that is easy to see.” A full postural study entails video and digital photographs, as well as the use of a podioscope. This tool essentially produces photographs of the soles of the feet, to see where actual weightbearing occurs. “I also like to have patients bring in several pairs of shoes,” John said. “Shoe wear patterns never lie.” Solutions for alignment and treatment will vary for each patient, but some modalities utilized could be a percussion tool, zero gravity massage chair, lower level light therapy, or photobimodulation.

Cupping or vibration therapy are also options for treatment. Other manual osteopathic treatment methods can include soft tissue manipulation, manual osteopathic articular techniques and cranialsacral therapies. A common-sense approach to physical health and well-being, Manual Osteopathic Manipulation is a proven effective solution to ensure balance and alignment in the body. “My goal is to at least get the patient as asymptomatic as I can,” said John, “and of course, helping my patients live comfortably and in good health is the highest priority.” Restoring Body Health and Feet Unlimited is located in The Warren Building at 6465 S. y d o b y r e Is Ev Happy? BY SHANNON SMITH

I

was fortunate to have two wonderful grandmothers. They were completely different from one another, yet they each had unique qualities that I hope rubbed off on me. My paternal grandmother was Mammaw. Her real name was Camilla, but I only knew her as Mammaw. My sisters and I have such great memories of her that we have created a “Mammaw game,” where we ask

trivia questions about Mammaw, and we all shout out the answer in unison. She was one of 16 children, and she was a very strong woman! She lived in a small house in Oklahoma City, just 45 minutes from our house, so we visited her a lot. My favorite time to visit was when I got to spend the night by myself - just Mammaw and me. But, most of the time, my sisters and I stayed

Mammaw’s Mystery Pie Serves 8 Some of my fondest memories of childhood were when I visited my grandmother, Mammaw. When my sisters and I spent the night at her house, one of her favorite sayings was, “Is everybody happy?” She wasn’t much of a cook, but on special occasions, she made a dessert called Mystery Pie. Mammaw died when I was in high school, but when I make this pie, I am reminded of her positive attitude and constant desire for everyone to be happy. 4 egg whites 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 25 Ritz crackers, crushed 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup toasted pecans, chopped

Whipped Cream: 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9” pie pan liberally with butter. Beat egg whites with baking powder until soft peaks form. Add brown sugar and vanilla into egg whites and continue to mix until well incorporated. Next add chopped pecans, crushed Ritz and chocolate chips and gently fold into the batter. Pour pie filling to the greased pan and bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely. While the pie is cooling, make the whipped cream by combining the heavy cream and powdered sugar together in a stand mixer and beating for 2-4 minutes until peaks form. Serve cooled pie with a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

at Mammaw’s together. We played in her spare bedroom, where she had a closet full of dress-up clothes, high heeled shoes and Barbie dolls. She had a drawer filled with jewelry for us to play with, including long strings of pearls, clip-on earrings and feather boas. My father’s childhood desk was in that bedroom, and we used it to play school and “office” since Mammaw had a calculator we could use for our pretend transactions. Often, my sisters and I would fight over a pair of shoes or one of the Barbies, and Mammaw would come into the room and say in a high-pitched voice, “Is everybody happy?” She always emphasized the word “happy” with a little more volume. And she always had a smile on her face. How could we not be happy? Some of my favorite memories of Mammaw were at her dining room table, a round wooden table with six heavy chairs. She had a shelf

in her cabinet full of orange Fire King bowls that we ate from at every meal. For breakfast, we had Cream of Wheat, and for lunch, we ate SpaghettiOs. It was a ritual I will always cherish. If we weren’t eating at Mammaw’s table, we were assembling jigsaw puzzles or playing Monopoly. But everything came to a halt at 6 o’clock because it was time to watch Wheel of Fortune. Mammaw had a crush on Pat Sajak, and she was a whiz at answering the puzzles on the show. Her dream was to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune, but unfortunately, it never happened. Mammaw didn’t cook much, but she was really good at heating up cans of soup or SpaghettiOs. She also made us instant pudding, but if she was really feeling adventurous, she made what she called “Mystery Pie.” I think the mystery is that there are Ritz crackers in the mix, but now that I’m grown-up, I know that the real mystery was how Mammaw maintained her zeal for life and her ability to make everybody happy.

Support Your Local Restaurants

BY MARY BRANSFORD

O

ur media partners are working together to help spread the word about patronizing our local restaurants and businesses during this crisis. It is of primary importance to continue our support and help these businesses as much as possible by making purchases from them via their online stores, drive-thru, curbside take-out, and pick-up and delivery services. We encourage you to email us at Art@ValueNews.com if you don’t see your favorite restaurant on this list. We will continue to make updates as new information is received and update this article and post on all of our social media platforms and website.

IMPORTANT - Many businesses have adjusted their open hours. PLEASE CALL or EMAIL your favorite dining establishment and verify their hours of operation and service options. This is especially important because there are still some area restaurants who have not notified us about their service and menu options.

LET’S ALL BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION

We want to thank everyone who is helping others in their communities – from the health care and public safety professionals who risk infection to help 18 |

others and keep us safe, to people who are dropping off food and supplies for elderly neighbors, to those who have canceled beloved family events to stay home. Actions like these inspire confidence and faith that we’ll get through this together.

Churches Moving Online BY CHRIS PUTMAN

I

n the midst of schools, churches, and every organization that can move online has, one Broken Arrow-based organization wants to continue to keep a close connection with its people. While many churches have moved their services online, one pastor wants a more intimate setting than a typical sermon in the pulpit. Pastor Chris Buskirk of Abiding Harvest Church knows many of his people are dealing with their world being turned upside down: kids home from school, a lay off from work, shortages at the stores, and shortages in the wallet. Buskirk pastors a close-knit church family, and his heart goes out to them during this unsettling time. To remedy this issue, Buskirk is staying in touch with his people through online technology. Instead of transmitting a livestream message from the pulpit in an otherwise empty building, he instead is going to broadcast his Sunday morning message from the church library in a fireside chat format. He will deliver a message of encouragement and then hear from his people in real time. He will open the online channel for a Q&A session and comments from the live audience. In addition, for as long as the quarantine lasts, he will send a

message to his flock daily to lift their spirits during a difficult time. This will take the format of a simple message of encouragement, a Bible study and even a panel discussion. “For 2000 years, the experience of the church has focused on people gathering to tangibly share what unites them in Spirit,” Buskirk said. “Hebrews even commands it. At first, virtual connections seemed to undermine that tradition. More recently, churches have adopted the internet to supplement their ministries. Now it looks like the only option, or at least the safest of ways, to connect and do our part to thwart the spread of this potentially deadly virus. Today, I’m thanking God for it. We will use it to keep doing and being a church.” Although the parishioners will miss their face-to-face engagement with each other, they won’t miss it with their pastor in this online environment. “I appreciate our church always being focused on community and relationships,” ORU Professor of Media & Communications Dr. Even Culp said. “In these challenging times, it presents an opportunity to continue those relationships through different methods. I appreciate that during this online season, I have an opportunity to stay

connected with my church and still follow the CDC guidelines.” Abiding Harvest Church is located at 4407 S. If you have symptoms, or have been in contact with a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19, the CDC recommendations are to make every effort to interview by telephone, text monitoring system, or video conference. (Temperature monitoring could be reported by phone or shown to a provider via video conferencing.) Symptoms: fever (chills and sweats), cough, shortness of breath. (Sometimes sore throat, achiness, and diarrhea can precede the typical symptoms of the illness.) If you have any of these symptoms, stay home and contact your provider. Mildly ill patients should be encouraged to stay home and contact their healthcare provider by phone for guidance about clinical management. Patients who have severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, should seek care immediately. Older patients and individuals who have underlying medical conditions or are immunocompromised should contact their physician early in the course of even mild illness. For patients with appointments, we ask you to remain in your car until we call or text you to come inside. In this way we can minimize your wait time and get you into a room promptly. Please be patient as we are likely to be very busy with patients over the coming weeks and months. Once testing becomes available, we can arrange to conduct testing in a drive through fashion if necessary to minimize cross contamination between infectious and noninfectious persons. COVID-19 tests are offered at cost for uninsured patients at $67. If the patient meets CDC criteria for free testing we will send for that instead. Right now, we are testing patients in priority fashion according to the CDC: 1. Hospitalized patients who have signs and symptoms compatible with COVID-19 in order to inform decisions related to infection control. 2. Other symptomatic individuals such as, older adults and individuals with chronic medical conditions and/or an immune-compromised state that may put them at higher risk for poor outcomes (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, receiving immunosuppressive medications, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease. 3. Any persons including healthcare personnel, who within 14 days of symptom onset had close contact with a suspect or laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patient, or who have a history of travel from affected geographic areas within 14 days of their symptom onset.

The award-winning actress gravitated towards performing early In Life. She took ballet lessons from the age of four, but It was her first speaking role in a school play which sparked her Interest In acting. “I would have been about 10 or11,” she recalls. I did my first play and got my first laugh. I remember hearing 300 people who were in the school hall laugh out loud and I thought, This Is brilliant to be able to bring Joy to people!” She goes on to say, “When I started using my voice, I realized the power of narration. I became addicted to telling stories -Initially It was with my body through dance and then I discovered my voice.”

4 | THE SIGNAL | APRIL 2020

After finishing high school, she studied at the University of New South Wales for two years, majoring in theatre and film, before being accepted Imo the Victorian College of the Arts. Soon after graduating In 1996, she received her big break In Bruce Baresford’s “Paradise Road”, acting opposite Glenn Close, Frances McDormand and Cate Blanchett.

Since then she has worked extensively in theatre, film and television. Her film credits Include the critically acclaimed Praise, Innocence end Burning Man. On the smell screen, Marta has starred as Detective Sam Lawson in six Blackjack movies made for television. Her other TV credits Include “Hell Has Harbour Views”, the award-winning miniseries “After the Deluge”, “Crownies” and most recently the “Jack Irish” series opposite Guy Pearce. Regarded as one of Australia’s best stage actors, she was one of 12 actors who, In 2005, were offered exclusive contracts by the Sydney Theater Company to form “The Actors Company.” During her three years with the Sydney Theatre Company, she appeared In “The War of the Roses”, which won her a Helpman Award for Best Supporting Actress In 2009; “Serpent’s Teeth”, “Mother Courage” and Banie Kosky’s eight hour “The Lost Echo”, where she played a spider among other things. Her other notable theatre credits Include Melbourne Theatre Company’s “Three Sisters” and “The Baloon”.

With a career spanning more than two decades, her resume is teeming with highlights, but she counts her theatre credits as her most memorable. “Playing to an audience Is exhilarating and dangerous, one of the truest forms of human contact you have,” she says. However, she’s relishing the opportunity of sinking her teeth into a complex character she can develop over the course of a series. “That’s the beauty of television; you have the opportunity to explore an amazing character over however many episodes and you don’t get that with a play,” she says. “Right now I’m In heaven. This Is something I used to dream or.” Marta, just turned 40 and is married to actordirector Ben Winspear, whom she met 10 years ago when they were both working at the Sydney Theatre Company. They reside In Sydney with their two daughters. When she’s not acting, Marta enjoys spending time with her family. Viewers can watch “A Place to Call Home” Thursday nights at 9pm.

ASIAN AMERICAN LIFE

Asian American Life is the only in-depth news magazine program that addresses topical issues affecting the Asian American communities in the United States and profiles Asian American leaders from around the world. The show premiered in 2003 airing only in the New York market. However, since 2010 the series has been distributed nationally throughout the public television system. Since its premier the show has received seven Emmy nominations for excellence in journalism. RSU Public TV began airing the show this year. Asian American Life addresses topical news issues, entertainment, art, and profiles Asian American leaders nationwide. Past guests include David Henry Hwang, Tony awardwinning playwright of Madam Butterfly, Broadway Actress Ann Harada, Alan Muraoka, award-winning actor of Sesame Street, Andrea Jung, former CEO of Avon, Loida Lewis, former CEO of Beatrice, Dr. David Ho, Time Magazine Man Of The Year for AIDS research, award-winning fashion designer Anna Sui, Gold Medalist/Olympiads Lia Neal and Toby Dawson, World Series Mets pitcher Ron Darling, and 2020 Presidential Democratic Candidate Andrew Yang. Since we last published our newsletter back in 2016, RSU Public TV is on a role. The station has won two Emmy’s, both in 2017, and we secured our broadcast future by purchasing a new antenna and transmitter. Our old Table transmitter was 20 years old and at end of life. We worked with the FCC to have them pay 90% of the cost. This means the next 20 plus years RSU Public TV will remain on the air and ready for the next round of new technology. BUSINESS TAX SPECIALIST & INDIVIDUAL TAX PREPARATION Dear Customers,

Tax Deadline Extended to July 15, 2020!

We want to assure you that we take the health and well-being of our community, customers, and associates very seriously. Like you, we’re closely monitoring the quickly developing effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and it’s affects on the economy. Tax season has not slowed down for us and we are still diligently working to ensure the timely filing of tax returns. In order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and continue to support our client’s financial needs, we have the following services available at no additional cost: 1) We are able to prepare and complete your tax returns, prepare payroll, and continue assisting with the full range of accounting services we offer, by utilizing our accounting-cloud. What this means: you can drag and drop documents directly into a secure portal which uploads to us directly. Your documents are encrypted and securely stored. You receive a notification once our staff has downloaded your forms. Your tax return will be returned to you in this manner and a hard copy sent out by mail. Your tax approval can be done remotely and from the comfort of your home and we offer screen sharing to do a walk-through of your return. 2) We are closely watching the Family Leave Act Expansion and following the legislation changes which directly impact our clients. We will be working with our business clients on the tax incentives for who this will impact and how to claim the credit. We are all in this together. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will follow guidance from public health officials and government agencies, so we can continue to support our customers and communities as needed. For more information about COVD-19 and what you can do to keep healthy and safe, visit the Centers for Disease Control at cdc.gov or your local health department’s website. Sincerely, Rebecca L.
