Don’t Just Ride, Bike MS Feel Welcome Sign up now for the ride taking place September 20-21. By Christopher Davis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects an estimated 2.3 million people worldwide. In the United States, celebrities like Jack Osborne, Annette Funicello and Richard Pryor help put a face to the disease. The fact is, however, that MS affects friends, family and
coworkers all around us. With the cause of MS still a mystery and treatments still falling short of an outright cure, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society asks for your support in raising funds toward MS research. Join them in Chandler on

September 20 and 21 for Bike MS: The Mother Road Ride 2014. Bike MS became a national event more than 30 years ago. Since then, it has become the National MS Society’s most successful event, serving as a healthy way for supporters to engage the public and raise millions of dollars toward the search for a cure. The National MS Society is the largest and most visible MS advocacy organization in the United States. With local chapters in every state, it raised just over $90 million in fiscal year 2012 for use in mobilizing people and resources toward unlocking the mystery of the disease. The basics of how MS affects the body are mainly relegated to the nerve fibers. (continued on page 22)
Goodwill and Dell Reconnect A free computer recycling program is available for residents to dispose old computers and parts. By Sheryl Sowell
Technology is improving every day. Today’s computers are quickly leaving yesterday’s systems in the past – or in your closet, basement or attic. Dell and Goodwill Industries of Tulsa continue their partnership to Reconnect, a no-charge computer recycling program for consumers. The program is intended to raise awareness of the importance of responsible computer disposal and give residents a free and convenient way to do the right thing with their unwanted home computer equipment. “We offer this service to the community so that everyone is able to recycle their old computers in an environmentally friendly way,” says Nancy Webster, Director of Community Relations for Goodwill Industries of Tulsa. Jim Gibbons, president and CEO for Goodwill Industries International, said: “The

When You Pull in the Drive
LCI Concrete replaces deteriorating driveways and improves your home’s curb appeal. By Duane Blankenship
Kalan Paul and LCI Concrete provide replacement driveways for homeowners. “We pride ourselves on completing every turnkey project to the satisfaction of our customers,” he says. “Most area driveways deteriorate due to the harshness of our Oklahoma winters and the measures taken to remove snow and ice.” LCI Concrete specializes in pouring, scoring and polishing concrete driveways and has served the greater Tulsa area for nearly ten years. If you’re considering a new concrete driveway, here are some things Kalan advises becoming aware of: Make sure you’re dealing with a reputable company that has general liability and workman’s comprehensive insurance. You don’t want to be held liable for expenses
resulting from an accident. Find a contractor who has been in business for at least one year. Never pay for work in advance. You might wake up and find that your contractor has “left Dodge” and cannot be reached. Get a written quote listing exactly what work will be done, a materials list with specifications and how long it will take to complete the project. This is your insurance that acceptable quality and standards are met. It’s also good to check to see that the contractor is a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. A reputable concrete contractor will mention the word “rebar” without your having to ask because steel reinforcement rebar is critical to the driveway’s fabrication. Without rebar, the driveway’s life could be reduced by many (continued on page 22)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
The Retirement Red Zone BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
replace your income in retirement. Your playbook should include multiple investment strategies to both defend against losses and advance toward your goals.
It’s that time of year again. Friday night lights, Saturday game day tailgate parties, the cooler days of fall, and the leaves changing colors. I love this time of year. It is our family’s favorite. With football starting and hunting season just around the corner, life is full of hope and promise. Just as it requires preparation to get ready to play in that big game or harvest that big buck, so too it takes preparation when planning for that “big day” of retirement. The last few years preceding retirement and the first few years immediately following retirement is what we call “the retirement red zone.” The reason we call it the red zone is because these years are most crucial to the outcome of your financial retirement success. It’s just like in football where the red zone is the last 20 yards before crossing the goal and
is critical to winning or defeat, the last few years before and after your retirement can make you or break you. It’s during this time that you need to develop a careful, drawn-out strategic plan….a GAME PLAN. Your playbook should be detailed with all the x’s and o’s and provide a careful strategy for how much you need to have saved, what debt you need to have paid off, what your budget is now and what it will be, and a specific plan for how to
These years often require sacrifice in order to meet the goal line, and a great coach to help get you there. We want to help you make your retirement a winning success! Give us to call to discuss your winning strategies today. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. Don’t Turn Your Back on Pain Dr. Craig Day offers non-surgical relief for those suffering from back pain.
By Christopher Davis
This year’s summer has been relatively mild, encouraging everyone to play hard. With all the camping, hiking, swimming and water skiing, it is likely your body is feeling the effects of the past couple months of fun. Before you head into the office and settle in for a season of work, consider visiting Dr. Craig Day to ensure you are in top form. Located at 31st and Harvard, Dr. Craig Day offers a full spectrum of chiropractic services. There is no good reason to live with back pain, and his mission is to provide relief and help clients avoid back surgery. People experience back pain for many reasons. Sometimes, regular activity can cause trauma to vertebra, taking months or years to become painful enough to hinder daily life. For others, a specific event causes injury. A long day of yard work, an afternoon skiing on the lake or even overdoing it on the hiking trail can leave you virtually immobile the next morning. In these cases, it is always best to proactively seek therapy. If swift action is not taken to correct the spine’s alignment, the nerves within the spinal cord will continue
to cause pain, which will only grow in intensity. Seldom do these types of injuries work themselves out, no matter how insistent our belief. It is also common, however, for people to believe that back surgery is the most effective way to treat spine-related pain. This all-or-nothing approach is unnecessary, says Dr. Day, who has a record of helping scores of patients avoid the operating room. “If you have tried everything, this may be your last stop,” says Dr. Day. Those who experience lower back pain, sciatica, bulging or herniated disc, spinal stenosis, pinched nerve, degenerative disc disease, or accident or work related injuries are likely to find relief at Dr. Day’s office. Some patients may discover a simple alignment does the trick. Others – especially those with more severe pain – may be intrigued to learn of nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD). Dr. Day utilizes the latest technology, a device called the DRX9000, to relieve the nerve compression that causes pain. By applying distraction force to the specific areas of
but it provides relief from pain related to bulging and herniated discs, sciatica and even degenerative disc disease. “Patients think it is the coolest thing,” says Dr. Day. “They have never done anything like this, but it feels really good. And it is good for them.” Compared to back surgery, NSSD represents an attractive option for addressing back pain. Patients can avoid the cost of surgery, as well as the recovery time and physical therapy. Whether your back pain is a long-time ailment or a recent injury from playing too hard over the summer, it is best to seek treatment now. Dr. Day and his staff are ready to help you find relief and get back to living a happier life.

The FUTURE of Back Treatment is Here! “After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said ''No!'' to back surgery.

Is Your Indoor Air Making You Sick? You already know that Tulsa’s hot summers and cold winters can be tough on your HVAC system; your heater or air conditioner will be running for months at a time. When that happens, your windows can remain closed for long stretches. And without fresh air, indoor pollutants and allergens can build up and compromise your indoor air quality. Poor indoor air quality can affect the quality of your life. Pollutants or allergens can cause
flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea and respiratory irritation, and people with asthma and allergy conditions are particularly vulnerable. Vacuuming and dusting can help, but the particles that cause the most irritation can be only removed with filtering devices. Aire Serv of South Tulsa can identify the air quality issues in your home or business and provide a solution tailored to your specific needs.
Electronic Air Cleaners and Filters

BBlack & White:
A Night at the Museum Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum hosts the second annual fundraising event on September 13.
By Duane Blankenship
Located in historic downtown Broken Arrow, the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum gathers and preserves regional history and artifacts that enrich the heritage of the city. The Historical Society shares area history in informative, interactive exhibits. Lori Lewis, executive director of the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum, is excited to announce the second annual “Night at the Museum” fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, September 13. The event will be held at the museum, located at 400 S. Main, and will commence at 6 p.m. Night at the Museum is sponsored by the Broken Arrow Convention and Visitors Bureau. The theme for this year’s Night at the Museum is “Black & White,” and historic black and white photographs will be on exhibit. “Attendees are encouraged to dress in black and
white business casual attire for the evening,” said Ms. Lewis. Exclusive food and beverage sponsor for the event is Main Street Tavern and The Rooftop. Musical entertainment will be provided by Michael Rappe and Suzanne Barns with easy-listening selections, and Chad Meier on acoustic guitar. Over 30 items from local businesses will be featured in a silent auction, including a weekend retreat in Arkansas and a meal to be prepared by local firefighters. These guys can really cook. A dinner for four with Dr. Clarence Oliver, retired superintendant of Broken Arrow Schools and renowned Broken Arrow historian, will also be auctioned. Tickets for Night at the Museum are only $25 for Broken Arrow Historical Society members and $30 for non-members. You may pay for tickets by credit card when you call the museum office. Your tickets will be held

Although adjustments are generally completed in two to three months, you must continue wearing the appliance in order to remain symptom-free and safe from relapse. Most cases resolve easily and result in far fewer headaches and earaches and less jaw popping and joint pain. “Results are usually life changing,” says Dr. White. Dr. White treats sleep apnea with fitted appliances. The public has become more aware of the disorder because research has disclosed its devastating consequences. It has been implicated in hypertension and cardiovascular disease, leading to strokes and heart attacks. These in turn lead to increased susceptibility to diseases that include compromised immune systems, learning and memory loss, irritability, sexual dysfunction, and mental and emotional health issues. Apnea occurs because the body is unable to obtain sufficient amounts of oxygen during sleep. The patient is essentially startled awake gasping for air. Dr. White fits patients with appliances that open the airway and allow for a healthy night’s sleep. “Snoring, choking or gasping for air throughout the night will be eliminated,” said Dr. White. He recommends sleep studies administered by a physician to determine the severity of the problem, with a diagnosis and recommended treatment. In severe cases, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines are
recommended. “Because some patients cannot tolerate sleeping with a mask, the appliance is an option. These devices are also fitted to help eliminate snoring. Medical insurance benefits are usually available when sleep studies have been conducted.” Dr. White and the White Cosmetic & Family Dentistry team report that they have had a tremendous response to their QDP (Quality Dental Plan) program, which is a low-cost alternative to expensive dental insurance. “Our QDP offers a way for patients to receive full routine exams and cleanings, plus reduced fees for all services, with none of the common hassles encountered with dental insurance,” said Dr. White. “Because insurance companies aren’t making profits by limiting or denying services, the dentist and consumer save time and money. No third party.” Dr. White adds that the plan could save you thousands on dental treatment and eliminate costly insurance premiums, which puts money back in your pocket.

Football and BBQ cookouts go hand in hand during the fall months. No one knows this better than Josh and Kristy White, who have been smoking meat for almost 8 years. The difference for them is that what started out as fun backyard BBQs turned into creating a competitive BBQ team that competes in three to four competitions a year and, most recently, began packaging their very own awardwinning BBQ rub. The White family team – known as Bubba-QBoys – consists of Josh, master chef; Kristy, presentation specialist; and their three kids, Addy (7), Aiden (5) and
www.ValueNews.com Avery (2), who happily serve as taste testers. The team competes in five meat categories – ribs, pork shoulder, chicken, brisket and sausage – and has placed top ten in large competitions for their brisket, chicken, sausage and ribs. They’ve also become known for their signature side items such as cheesy potato casserole, smoked beans and coleslaw. Each competition they attend requires preparation. Bubba-Q-Boys smoke their meat in their pull-behind custom-made smoker and the family stays the night in their pop-up camper. “It’s quite the process getting ready for the competitions,” says Kristy. “We make our list, run to Sam’s, pack our bags, games, camper and smoker, and off we go. Our kids love to help set up and truly enjoy helping rub down the meat and watching it in the smoker. I’m pretty sure their favorite part is being our little taste testers. All three of our kids started eating ribs at the age of 1 and it’s their favorite.” She says they found that their homemade BBQ rub did well in competitions and, with the approval of their friends, they decided to package it. After a few years of tweaking and modifying the formula they worked with a spice company in Edmond to package the Bubba-Q-Boys rub in a bottle. “Smoking meat has become a pastime and hobby for many people, so we wanted to give the at-home smokers some-
thing to use,” explains Kristy. “The main ingredients are brown sugar, pepper, paprika, garlic salt, cayenne, cumin, and a few other secret elements. It’s a nice base to any meat, whether you’re smoking ribs and brisket or grilling chicken breast or even a burger.” Kristy says they don’t just smoke meat for the competitions – they love cooking and have get-togethers with family and friends as often as possible to try new things. “One of my favorites at home is pulled pork tacos, where you take a flour tortilla, fill it with pulled pork, shredded lettuce and diced red onion, then drizzle ranch dressing and BBQ sauce over it. You can even use leftover brisket for fajitas or in chili. We always find a way to make something new, and that always makes for delicious leftovers.” The “Salty Sweet with Just a Little Heat” rub from the Whites is available in a 12-ounce bottle ($7.99) or a resealable 7-pound bag ($27.99). If you live in the Tulsa area, they offer a refill of your current Bubba-Q-Boys bottle for half price.

HHelping You Create the Retirement of Your Dreams Melanie Hasty-Grant of Waterstone Private Wealth Management offers soon-to-be retirees tips on planning life after retirement. By Melanie Hasty-Grant
My retirees aren’t sitting around in their rocking chairs! The retirement bucket lists of today are full of the hopes and dreams that have finally come to fruition. Through sacrificing, saving, and careful planning and investing these folks have reached their goals and are reaping the benefits. From restoring old cars and Cushmans, to living at the lake, traveling to dreamt-about locations like Alaska and Canada, picnicking with grandchildren, loving on pets who are like children, judging rodeos, starting their own businesses, going to bowl games, and moving to really cool golfing and retirement communities, they are busier than ever checking off that bucket list. In fact, most of the time when I call them about scheduling a meeting to go over their investments, it is difficult for them to find time. They often tell me, “I’m not sure how I ever found time to work.” Nothing makes me happier than seeing them get to do what we had planned for over the last years of their work life. They deserve it. But, this whole retiring thing is not easy sometimes. It is definitely a process! Of course, the primary goal that I assist clients with at this point in my career is the money goal. We do a complete financial assessment. One of the biggest questions that pre-retirees have is, “Will I have enough money to last throughout my
retirement?” Working with a trusted financial professional can help you to determine if the savings you have will be enough or if you need to be saving more. It matters who you trust and who you work with. This is usually a lifetime relationship, and it needs to be with someone that you work well with and that will spend the time needed to make your financial life successful. During the planning phase, we help clients create a debt reduction plan, a retirement savings plan, and an income plan to replace their salary. However, in addition to adjustments and planning regarding your money, there are also other psychological and emotional challenges. This is where the counselor in me takes over. One of the issues soon-to-be retirees face is redefining their identity. Who am I if not for my job title or company position? Developing a “you are more than what you do” attitude helps to make this change. Think of how you might transfer skills of your current job into hobbies, volunteerism, or a part-time job. Another common but related issue is finding a purpose for your life. It’s important to not just be retiring from something, but also to something. One idea to help you develop a new purpose is to develop a bucket list of 100 things or more you would like to do during your retirement. New goals and dreams are important during this time to provide purpose and stability of identity. Develop a sense for how you will create meaning in your life.
Think about how you want to spend your time. There is a lot more freedom of time when retired. Retirees often fantasize about having so much free time to do hobbies, etc. Initially, the fantasy becomes reality and it feels exactly as they had envisioned. They are golfing or fishing every day and having a great time. However, eventually having a routine helps to normalize the transition. We encourage clients to start “practicing” being retired. Start doing some of the things on a daily basis that you plan to do in retirement. Finally, be proactive about potential changes in relationships. Often there are changes in relationships between spouses, children, and grandchildren. For spouses, often spending 24/7 together is more than challenging. If one spouse has always been at home, there can be “turf wars” about who is in charge of what. Also, not having the social time with co-workers in the break room is a change. If you are used to having a lot of your social interaction needs met at work, then this can be difficult. We encourage clients to be proactive in addressing changes in relationships and expectations. I hope you find this information helpful in preparing for this wonderful time in your life. Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes The walk to support Oklahomans with diabetes will be October 11, 2014 at the University of Tulsa.
By Deanna Rebro Diabetes affects everyone, whether personally, a loved one, friend or coworker. There is no cure. But
diabetes must be stopped, soon. Latest statistics show that 29 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, and the numbers are increasing. A recent
Jane Stuart, Magen Davis and Kathy Brown from the Tulsa chapter of the American Diabetes Association urge everyone to get involved in the effort to stop diabetes, a disease that afflicts 29 million Americans and affects virtually everyone.
report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that if current trends continue, one in three Americans will be diagnosed with diabetes in 2050. Even more alarming, the biggest jump in 15 years – more than tripling – is in Oklahoma. One in six Oklahomans has been diagnosed with diabetes, and one in four of the state is undiagnosed. On October 11, “Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes” will aim to find a cure for diabetes, while supporting those in Oklahoma who are living with this disease in one way or another. The event, presented by the Tulsa chapter of the American Diabetes Association, will be at the University of Tulsa. Participants are encouraged to form a team of two or more people who will recruit pledges for walking the 3.3-mile course. Coworkers, school associates, clubs or organizations, or just friends and family can share this fun and worthwhile experience as a team. Quite often, teams are formed in honor of an individual or in memory of a loved one who has passed. A very special team, Red Striders, will demonstrate the courage of living with diabetes
www.ValueNews.com every day. Step Out Manager Magen Davis encourages everyone to participate. “In this home stretch, we want as many people as possible to get involved,” she says, “and to get the word out to as many other people as they can.” She makes a special appeal to area corporations. “The cost of diabetes in lost productivity is staggering,” she adds. Statistics show that individuals with diabetes have health care costs 2.3 times higher than those without diabetes. One in 10 health care dollars is spent treating diabetes and all of its complications. This health care burden that lowers life expectancy by up to 15 years also increases the risk of heart disease by two to four times, and is the leading cause of kidney disease, adult-onset blindness, neuropathy, hearing loss and nontraumatic lower limb amputations. “We want companies to make a corporate-wide wellness initiative a top priority,” she says, “and we can help.” The Tulsa ADA chapter offers prevention plans, as well as resources and programs that deal with every aspect of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. From the day someone is given that lifelong diagnosis, support is just a phone call away. Funds from Step Out will help assure all the latest resources remain available to anyone in need. “I am particularly grateful to all the companies that offer matching funds to their employees,” says Magen. Some corporations extend this generosity to their retirees. She encourages employees to contact their human relations departments to ask about this possibility. Participants don’t have to know anything about fundrais-
ing or diabetes to join Step Out. Turnkey tools for signing up and assembling a team are available online. Smart phone apps and social media are included. There are even provisions for virtual walkers who cannot be there in person but still want to show their support. “Virtually everyone in Oklahoma has a personal connection with diabetes. And we all have the ability to influence our friends, family, co-workers and employers to make a difference. Take the initiative to form a Step Out team, get your employer’s support and participation, and help us improve the lives and health of those we know who are impacted by this disease or at risk for developing it in the future,” said Anita Holloway, Ernst & Young LLP, 2014 Step Out Corporate Recruitment Chair. Numerous awards will be presented after the walk, which will take place rain or shine. Besides walking on October 11, many volunteers are needed to make the event successful and enjoyable. Among other tasks, volunteers can help set up tents and tables, distribute water, or simply clap and cheer. Jane Stuart, associate manager, would be happy to accept volunteers or answer questions about the event.

Joe and Theresa Watts, also real estate professionals, understand the dilemmas that home buyers face – in particular, first time buyers. “I’d say 90 percent of first time buyers are concerned about issues in their credit history,” says Pastor Billy Joe. They may be afraid to apply for a home loan or perhaps have been turned down because of outstanding bills, bankruptcy, alimony or child support issues. The Home Buyers Seminar will educate these potential buyers on how they, too, can become creditworthy and prepare themselves for a home loan approval. Janelle Ligons, a mortgage broker with Supreme Lending, will walk seminar attendees through the process step by step. In some instances, she will be able to show buyers what they need to do in their particular circumstances so that in three months, six months or whatever timeframe, they will qualify for a loan that meets their needs. Most people have heard of conventional, FHA and VA loans. But numerous other home loan programs are also available. There are Native American loans for tribal registrants and rehab loans for the purchase of older homes and their energy-efficient upgrades. There are many other possibilities as well. “I ask renters why they pay somebody else’s mortgage when they could be paying their own,” says Pastor Theresa. Most of the time they don’t realize all that they can do. “Take the first step to make it happen,” she urges.

Knowing Your Mortgage Options Can Save You Money Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Derek Robinson, RCB Bank Mortgage Originator
When it comes to buying or refinancing a home, there are a lot of mortgage loan options available. Knowing the variety of possibilities can help you choose a loan that will best fit your needs and save you money in the long-term. Let’s explore the assortment of loan opportunities. Conventional Loans: The most traditional avenue for pur-
chasing or refinancing, this type of financing offers fixed terms up to 30 years with a required down payment of 5 percent with monthly private mortgage insurance (PMI). Borrowers who put 20 percent of the purchase price as a down payment or have 20 percent equity in their current home will avoid paying the monthly PMI. The current maximum loan limit (the limit

on the size of a mortgage which Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will guarantee) for a single family home is $417,000. Jumbo Loans: An option to obtain loan amounts over $417,000. Jumbos are relatively similar to the conventional loan only with a slightly higher interest rate. FHA Loans: Most commonly used by first-time home buyers or borrowers with limited credit history. FHA also offers fixed terms up to 30 years with 3.5 percent down payment and monthly mortgage insurance. Currently FHA requires a onetime upfront funding fee of 1.75 percent of the loan amount that can be financed into the loan. With more flexible guidelines than the conventional mortgage, the FHA mortgage was created to make home ownership more accessible. VA Loans: A program specifically designed for veterans, the VA loan offers a fixed 15- or 30-year term with no monthly mortgage insurance required and 100 percent financing available. The VA loan is available to veterans, active service mem-

bers and also eligible surviving spouses. Veterans Affairs (VA) guarantees a portion of the loan. There is a funding fee that varies depending on the type of service and times the eligibility has been used. Percentages can be found at www.va.gov. USDA Loans: Commonly referred to as Rural Development Loans (RD). RD is designed to help low-to-moderate income earning households obtain financing for rural properties. Fixed terms up to 30 years and 100 percent financing (with monthly mortgage insurance) are available. Like the FHA loan there is an upfront guarantee fee of 2 percent that can be financed into the loan. This is a government-insured loan that is only available for primary residences. Section 184 Loans: A program designed to offer financing to Native American and Alaskan Native tribal members. Fixed terms are available up to 30 years with a down payment of 2.25 percent on purchase prices of $50,000 or above, and 1.25 percent on all purchases below $50,000. HUD does require
a 1.50 percent upfront guarantee fee that can be financed into the loan amount and does not require monthly mortgage insurance. This loan is guaranteed 100 percent by the office of Loan Guarantee within HUD’s Office of Native American Programs. Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM): A specialized product designed for certain situations. ARMs have a fixed interest rate for a set number of years and then adjust to a variable interest rate that can change throughout the remaining term of the loan. Interest rate adjustments may move up or down depending on the direction of the mortgage index (rate set by market forces). Knowing your options before you begin the home-buying or refinancing process can help you become a money-wise borrower and make sound financial decisions. PParty with a Purpose
to Help Rescued Animals The Parrot Head Pirates’ Party-Ball on September 20 will benefit the Pet Adoption League.
By Deanna Rebro For one evening, Parrot Heads will become pirates for the benefit of Pet Adoption League. On Saturday, September 20, the Tulsa Parrot Head Club will present its first ever Pirates’ Party-Ball at Tulsa RV Ranch. Known worldwide as Jimmy Buffett’s most avid fans, the Parrot Heads are also active with local community, educational and environmental concerns. The nonprofit organization raises money for charity and people in need. And they always have fun doing it. “We party with a purpose,” says event chair Jeanette North. The Pet Adoption League, a Tulsa animal rescue organization, was chosen for this inaugural benefit. Since 1998, PAL has been rescuing dogs and cats and finding homes in which the animals will be loved and cared for the rest of their lives. The all-volunteer organization has no paid employees and no facility of its own. Every cent received goes toward the care of the animals (vaccinations,
spaying or neutering, and other medical care) that are either in foster homes or boarded at a veterinary clinic. The animals remain with PAL until the right home is found for them, no matter how long it takes. In some cases the wait has been several years, according to PAL President Sherri Hardy. Adoption fees partially offset expenses, but the organization must rely primarily on donations to care for rescued animals that otherwise would have gone to local shelters. In July, PAL rescued six dogs and a kitten from the Okemah Animal Shelter and played an instrumental role in establishing governmental policy that transformed the shelter from a closed capture-and-kill facility to an open adoption shelter. “We are so honored to have the Parrot Heads work on our behalf,” says Sherri. “They are a great group of people who work really hard to support a worthy cause, and they all have big hearts for animals.”
The Pirates’ Party-Ball will take place the day after the international “Talk Like A Pirate Day,” when pirate enthusiasts around the globe set aside their everyday vocabularies to speak like they just stepped off a pirate ship. Live music will be provided by Something Steel. The band that has drawn a record crowd at Utica Square Summer’s Fifth Night concerts and is featured at Driller’s Stadium for the annual Margaritaville Night create island sounds blended with steel drums, guitar and percussion. Of course, everyone’s favorite Jimmy Buffett tunes will be on their playlist. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 11 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best pirate costume, the best “Talk Like A Pirate” and the best moves on the dance floor. A silent auction and donation auction will also take place, as well as the opportunity to vote select PAL animals out of a very special “jail.” Tickets are $50 per person and $35 for Parrot Head members and Pet Adoption League volunteers. Each ticket includes open slider burger bar with all the trimmings and two free pirate punches. A cash bar is available. Tickets can be pur-

Don’t Just Ride, Bike MS The disease is an immune-mediated response, wherein damaged nerve fibers of the develop scar tissue (sclerosis). The deterioration of the myelin coating around the fibers disrupts communications in the central nervous system. This produces a wide range of symptoms in the body, such as slurred speech, blurred vision, trembling and weakness, numbness or tingling in limbs. While some breakthroughs have been made, an outright cause or cure for MS remains elusive. Currently, the scientific community points to a combination of genetic and environmental factors as a likely cause.
Research has shown that cases of MS occur more frequently in northern countries, implying a connection between the amount of sunlight (and vitamin D) individuals are exposed to. Scientists also believe that genetic predisposition may be a factor, too, in causing MS. Working hypotheses regarding cause aside, the strides made in gaining an understanding really only scratch the surface; more research is needed. For example, the NMSS is funding a study in Australia to specifically focus on the relationship between the disease and sunlight exposure. And even though the
continued from page 1 National MS Society “funds more multiple sclerosis research and provides more programs for people with MS and their families than any other voluntary health organization in the world,” according to the National Health Council, it doesn’t happen without participation and support. Bike MS is the society’s most popular event, and takes place in every state, every year. In Oklahoma, bicyclists pedal along 150 miles of Route 66 on September 20 and 21. Presented by Sam’s Club, The Mother Rode Ride begins and ends in Chandler at the Lincoln County Agri-Civic Center, located at 1179 W.

www.ValueNews.com gratuity and beverage. Tuesday, September 9 is Restaurant Week Celebrity Night. On this special night, local celebrities are paired up with participating restaurants to help greet patrons and provide information about the prix fixe dinner menu. “We look forward to Restaurant Week every year and are always happy to have our restaurants participate,” said Amanda Williams, marketing and communications manager for McNellie’s Group. “It’s a great way for the community to enjoy delicious food and support a great cause.” The Food Bank’s Food for Kids program specifically addresses childhood hunger and ensures food-insecure children in our communities have a reliable resource for nutritious meals throughout the year. The program includes the Backpack Program, which provides weekend backpacks full of food to children in need; Free Family Farmers’ Markets, which provides fresh produce and bakery items to low income children and their families; and extended school holiday feeding. To date, Restaurant Week has raised more than $260,000 for the Food Bank’s mission of eliminating food insecurity. An updated list of participating restaurants, their Restaurant Week menus and contact information will be available at www.tulsapeople.com beginning September 1. “Restaurant week is a fun
and exciting time each year,” said Eileen Bradshaw, executive director of the food bank. “It’s always inspiring to see great Tulsa restaurants step up to help our community and see Tulsa residents supporting their local restaurateurs and a hunger-relief organization.” This year, Restaurant Week is hosting a social media contest. Show your love for Restaurant Week by posting pictures on social media. Use the hashtag #TulsaRW on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and you could win a dining certificate to one of your favorite Restaurant Week restaurants. The event’s presenting sponsors are TulsaPeople magazine and OMNI Air International. Additional sponsors include the Frisco Energy, George Kaiser Family Foundation, News on 6, KRMG and Wireless Technologies. “We look forward to Restaurant Week every year,” said Jim Langdon, publisher of TulsaPeople. “It’s a great time to visit different restaurants and try new dishes all while giving back to such a worthy cause.” TulsaPeople created Restaurant Week in 2006.
