Reclaiming World Malaria Day Is April 25th American History Kairos10 celebrates past success and continues its efforts in the fight against malaria.

The Refuge Lifestyle specializes in original, rustic home furnishings, Western art and more. By Duane Blankenship

Owners Clinton and Robin Taylor invite you to visit The Refuge Lifestyle in Bixby. Whether actively shopping for home furnishings or just wanting a unique experience, you’ll enjoy the many functional creations for any room of your home, lake home, mountain home or second home. The Refuge Lifestyle’s offerings include rustic, country style home furnishings made of logs, old barn wood, oak, walnut, cedar, aspen and pine. They also have wall art and wildlife mounts by a world-class taxidermist. “We recently expanded one of our showrooms,” said Robin. “It is full of beautiful

Green Gables is reclaiming American history by turning old barns and other structures into beautifully crafted, heirloomquality tables, chairs, bars, beds and hutches.” “Timber has been an important natural resource since the beginning of the United States,” said Clinton. “Just as the tools and techniques used to harvest trees evolved over time, the quality of lumber was forever changed since old growth timber became less available. Malaria is a killer, a killer that claims one child’s life per minute. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2012 alone,

malaria claimed the lives of 627,000 people, 86 percent of which were children, with a total of 207 million cases reported. These statistics tell

us two very important things. The first – malaria is a vicious disease, and the second – malaria is preventable and curable. Malaria is not a disease most Americans are familiar with. It is the name of a faraway sickness of little to no consequence for most of us. Unfortunately, that is simply not the case. In America, an average of 1,500 cases of malaria are reported annually, though the disease was eradicated in the 1950s. Marked by vomiting, body aches, fever, and, if left untreated, death, malaria is transmitted through mosquito bites. existing homes needing a garage door facelift. They also do repair work, tune-ups and garage door spring replacements. Steve speaks highly of his qualified staff. Keith Mrozinski, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, builds the custom doors and oversees shop operations. Houston Ball and John Devary are the outstanding installers and service technicians, and Steve Tucker and Ben Cox are the residential installation experts. Steve’s wife, Tammy, manages the office. Custom door are the pride and joy of Superior Overhead Door. “We can design anything you can imagine,” says Steve. “Tell us or show us what you want and we can make it.” The company has installed custom glass doors to complement the architecture of several modern homes in the area. They have also enclosed patios by engineering overhead doors for two or more walls. This permits the walls to open up when the weather is nice and enclose the patio during inclement weather, permitting year-round use. Superior Overhead Door aims to provide the finest quality available in the industry. They offer virtually every style, make and model of garage door in multiple colors to fit your personal preferences. “We also carry wind-

load doors,” says Steve. With the severe weather conditions we see in Oklahoma, these doors have become a popular choice. They have also chosen industry-leading Chamberlain Liftmaster as their exclusive garage door opener manufacturer. They employ their own technicians – not subcontractors – to perform all work. Superior Overhead Door excels in designing, handcrafting and installing totally custom garage door solutions that are unique to your needs. “We want our customers to know how we strive to be the perfect partner when they are looking for a highly experienced company capable of providing endless design possibilities and the finest professional installations available,” said Steve. They frequently get callbacks from customers complimenting their installers and technicians, their workmanship and their on-the-job courtesy. “Our service truck is always fully equipped to do the job,” adds Steve. “All you have to do is give us a call.”

Worship at The Rock W

in the promises of God. Our hopes are to bring our young women back to reality and teach them valuable life skills,” said Pastor Theresa. Many young women graduate from high school and find themselves asking, ‘Who am I? What do I do and where do I go now?’ If these young women had first found out who they were in Christ, they probably wouldn’t be having these thoughts now. Ladies of Royalty helps them understand what God wants for them. It teaches them to stop listening to worldly views and reality shows and start listening to and trusting in God.” Pastors Billy Joe and Theresa want all young people to be equipped to win in life and enjoy it to the fullest. “There is no progress without a process,” stated Pastor Billy Joe. “The Rock exposes all to something better in life!” Call or visit the website for information on worship services and other programs.

There’s something for each member of your family at The Rock Church.

By Duane Blankenship

All are welcome to attend services and programs of The Rock Church where Pastors Theresa and Billy Joe Watts share the word of God.

The Rock Church is a multiracial, diverse congregation with a mission to serve God and love people. The outreach ministry began serving the Tulsa community seven years ago under the leadership of Pastors Billy Joe and Theresa Watts. “There’s something for the whole family at The Rock,” says Pastor Billy Joe, “and we invite you to join us for a unique experience where we are confident you will feel God and love.” The Rock Church invites middle school boys to adult men to join in The Timothy Project, a male mentoring and coaching class taught by founding member of the John C. Maxwell Coaching Team, Pastor Billy Joe Watts. Pastor Billy Joe quotes 2 Timothy 2:2, “For you must teach others those things you and many others have heard me speak about. Teach these great truths to trustworthy men who will, in turn, pass them on to others.” The Timothy Project is a life coaching and mentoring program. It lays out a strategy for successful living by

asking, “Who will you be?” as it focuses on the virtues of integrity and honesty. “The goal of the project is to provide a redefinition of manhood,” said Pastor Billy Joe. “In Romans 12:2 we read, ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’” Billy Joe asks young men to show him their friends and he’ll show the young men their future. “We can’t wait to reach these young men,” he said, “We must do it while they’re still in school and address ‘at risk’ issues before they become huge risks.” The Timothy Project is looking for sponsorships, grants and opportunities to team up with organizations that will help provide funding to expand the visions of young men. Pastor Theresa Watts leads The Rock’s Ladies of Royalty program, a monthly gathering of young women ages 18 to 25 looking to be everything God created them to be. “Our ladies are learning what it means to be a woman of royalty walking

HHonoring Youth in the Community Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Tulsa announce Youth of the Year award recipient, Neariah Persinger.

By Duane Blankenship

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Tulsa build character by guiding area youth in everyday behavior and attitude. “Young people of all backgrounds are invited to join together in wholesome recreation and activities,” said Dustin Blackmon, unit director for the Salvation

Army Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow. Nationally recognized programs help young people succeed in school, stay healthy, learn important life skills, pursue interests in the arts and sports, and explore vocational choices. “And most importantly,” continued Blackmon, “our Boys & Girls

Clubs help youth in the area become productive, responsible and caring citizens by providing an environment that is conducive to the development of their potential. The overall goal of the organization is for all young people to recognize that great futures start here, and they start now.” The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Tulsa held its annual Youth of the Year Awards Banquet on February 20 at the University of Tulsa Allen Chapman Activity Center. The evening was highlighted with presentations by the four finalists representing the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Tulsa. Candidates were Neariah Persinger, Broken Arrow; J’Day McIntosh, Mabee Red Shield; Devin Duckett, North Mabee; and Miana McHenry, West Mabee. The 2014 Youth of the Year award winner is Neariah Persinger, a student at New Covenant Academy in Broken Arrow. “This is a great honor for Neariah,” said Blackmon, “and for the

Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow.” Neariah is a delightful young lady who exudes personality. She’s a hard worker and full of energy. Her abundance of enthusiasm is contagious and makes you feel good when you’re in her presence. “Neariah has been a member of the Broken Arrow Club for eight years,” said Broken Arrow Program Director Sa’Quita Burrell. “She’s a valued asset.” Neariah is in training for the Jr. Olympics and currently holds several Oklahoma swimming records in her specialties, the butterfly and freestyle. Her coach is her mom, who was an Olympic swimmer. Neariah says she hopes to one day represent the United States in the Summer Olympic Games. David Litterell, executive director, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Tulsa, made opening introductions at the awards banquet and a welcome was issued by Aaron Massey, club advisory council chairman. Major James Taylor, Salvation Army area commander, introduced the evening’s honored guest

speaker, Major Clay Satcher, who brought the Boys & Girls Clubs to Tulsa. Major Satcher arrived here in 1946 and was responsible for the building of a gymnasium in downtown Tulsa in 1948, the beginnings of the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs. Major Satcher expressed appreciation for the 60 wonderful years he spent in Tulsa. “If you love people and want to serve them,” said the Major, “the Salvation Army is a great place to do it.” Danny Roe was the recipient of the first annual Clay Satcher Youth Development Award for his eleven years of service on the advisory board, for his handson approach to service, and for the many years he served as council president.

GGreen Grass Sooner, Not Later SoonerLawn has earned a reputation for quick results and healthy grass.

By Christopher Davis

SoonerLawn specializes in services designed to deliver quick results. For clients seeking lush, green grass, free of weeds and pests, look no further than SoonerLawn. Owned by U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton, SoonerLawn has revived and maintained lawns in the Tulsa area for 10 years. With a portfolio of accounts ranging from commercial to residential, there are plenty of success stories related to their six-step lawn care program. Among the happy customers is the Reserve at Battle Creek, where the presi-

dent and landscaping chairman voices his satisfaction with SoonerLawn. But with lawns’ colors speak louder than words. Wherever one sees SoonerLawn trucks working, green grass will be found sooner, not later. The key to SoonerLawn’s success is striking the right balance of fertilizers and weed control, as well as pest control. Fertilization and weed control are both crucial to maintaining a healthy, green lawn. Anyone who has taken the DIY approach to lawn care is familiar with trial and

error in the yard. Too much fertilizer – or the wrong mixture – means the grass will burn up and die, effecting the exact opposite of the intended result. SoonerLawn will determine the proper right mix of fertilizer to ensure grass thrives with minimal effort on the owner’s part. “It is important to water following fertilization,” says Bolton. With proper fertilization and watering cycles, owners will see positive results. Within weeks, thick, healthy grass will be growing. But as healthy grass takes off, so can weeds.

Be proud of your lush, green lawn with the help of SoonerLawn.

SoonerLawn also discerns which herbicide to apply in order to control weeds, giving desired turf the best opportunity to grow without competition in the yard. As with fertilization, weed control is not a one-size-fits-all approach, requiring experts in order to do the job properly. SoonerLawn will assess which weeds are problems, in which areas, and apply appropriate mixtures and amounts to kill off weeds. Aeration is an often-overlooked process with lawn care. Essentially, aeration entails the creation of small holes underneath grass, allowing nutrients, oxygen and water to better reach the roots. Since most lawns serve as outdoor floors for kids, pets and fun activities, it does not take long for ground to get so compacted that grass cannot thrive. SoonerLawn uses a machine to systematically pull out small plugs of dirt, allowing roots to stretch out, breathe and feed much more comfortably. Bolton recommends aeration at least twice per year for most lawns. “Spring and fall are the ideal times for aeration,” he says. With fertilization, weed control and aeration in place, one may believe all that is left

to worry about is watering and mowing. However, pests can undo even the best efforts at lawn care. SoonerLawn provides pest control, giving grass the defense it needs against major enemies like ants, chinch bugs and moles. Though such battles can be frustrating and long-term, Bolton and his staff will apply insecticides or repellents to get the problem under control. No more brown patches. No more anthills, molehills or gopher mounds to interrupt the sea of green or disrupt lawn mowing. At the end of the day, establishing and maintaining a lush, green yard is the goal. SoonerLawn takes the fuss and effort away from the owner. With their expertise and equipment, they are prepared to take on the burden of assessing lawn care needs and executing the appropriate solutions.

A GENEROUS HEART BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Most of the time folks think about generosity as giving away things or money. Generosity actually means lots of things. The kind of generosity I am talking about here can take the form of encouragement, forgiveness, being deeply present for a friend during a difficult time, giving away the credit for an idea or success, giving a powerful voice to someone who feels powerless, recognizing the strength and character of another, the gift of your time, and yes, sometimes giving money or resources anonymously, with no need for recognition. I have worked on oodles of boards for charitable organizations over the years. We raised lots of money and that’s great. However, I have learned that true generosity is a different animal altogether. It comes from an inner fire to make a difference in the world, to step up to the plate when there is a pressing need and commit to doing what we can to help. True generosity changes the life of not only the receiver but also the giver. This generosity can change our world. A few years ago, Ken (my husband)

and I created a program called Character Coin. The idea was to watch for folks doing something kind or positive and give them a Character Coin. The giver was to catch someone doing something good, give them the coin, tell them why, and ask them to pass it on! It’s a pay it forward type of idea. We minted 30,000 of these coins and gave them out to teachers, kids, city leaders, and service men and women. What happened next truly changed our lives and how we saw people and our community. We heard stories about coins being passed from hundreds of folks both young and old. We heard the impact that it made on their lives. We were blessed to witness what happens when one person simply recognizes the strength and character of another. It was especially incredible to watch how

contagious this generosity “of recognizing another and giving a compliment” was. Just last week, we had someone call the office requesting another coin to give out to someone. The story they told us warmed our hearts all over again. So much so that we have committed to mint 10,000 more coins. If you need some, stop by the office. They are here for the taking. The story I tell you here is not about the coins. It’s not about us. It’s about trying to inspire you to create this amazing experience of generosity in your own heart. Commit to looking for opportunities with friends, neighbors, and strangers where you can be a blessing and be generous. You do not have to be rich to give generously. The miracle is this…the more you share, the more you have. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. BBathe in Safety Walk-in tubs and showers provide relaxation to those with limited mobility.

Greg Wolter is president and founder of Community Builders, Inc., headquartered in Tulsa with offices in Oklahoma City and Little Rock, Arkansas. They are best known throughout Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri as quality home remodeling experts.

affordable walk-in tubs and walk-in showers. Who doesn’t enjoy the simple pleasure in taking the time to relax with a warm bath and letting the pressing moments of the day simply pass away for the moment? The aches and pains many of us feel now that we’ve grown older seem to subside with the refreshing warmth provided by spending time in the water. Unfortunately for many aging Americans with mobility issues, stepping into a bath can result in slipping and falling into the tub or onto the floor. This fear of falling has made the simple act of bathing and its therapeutic benefits something many no longer feel comfortable doing. Designed for Seniors® recently partnered with Jacuzzi®, the company we all know as having perfected hydrotherapy. “Together, they have created walk-in tubs and showers that offer more than just safe bathing, peace-ofmind and independence. The resulting products can actually help us feel better,” said Greg. “We recommend

several quality tub and shower offerings from Jacuzzi® and Luxury Bath that are easy to access even by wheelchair for those with limited mobility.” Although these innovative new bath products are ideal for seniors, they also advance the quality of life for any individual. Retirement may be many years away for you, but you can still benefit from a remodeling of your bathroom that will begin serving you now throughout your senior years. “Customers are excited when they discover that we have products that successfully combine the safety of a walkin bath tub with the benefits of a hot tub,” said Greg. “You can now have that experience, usually offered only by luxurious resorts, and you can enjoy it in the privacy of your own home whenever you desire.” Now is a great time to be remodeling. Community Builders offers 12 months “same as cash” or easy low

payment plans tailored to your budget. Remodeling can add value to your home and is something your family will enjoy well into your future. Greg serves on the National Board of Advisors for GE Home Improvement Lending. His company is a professional organization that has been recognized nationally with the Business Ethics Award presented by the National Association of Siding and Window Dealers. You can review their stellar record with the BBB and the Greater Tulsa Home Builders Association. Community Builders is eager to earn your business and trust. For more information, contact

BBuilding with Pride Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns offers variety and top-grade work.

By Carol Beck-Round

Inola Portable Buildings has a reputation – a good one. According to owner Carl Parson, “Customers drive from Bristow, Sapulpa, Tulsa and beyond to purchase their portable buildings from us.” Whether you need a storage building, pole barn, loafing shed, metal garage, cabin or other portable building, Inola Portable

Buildings & Pole Barns can meet your needs. In business since 1998, they have earned an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. “We only use top-grade materials on everything we build,” says Parson, who before starting his company had been in the construction and roofing business for 20 years. His experience in that

field has carried over to the quality he delivers in every product his company makes, whether it is metal or wood. At the business, located off the north side of Highway 412 at 30355 S. 4230 Rd., you can browse through more than 50 displays available. Buildings can be delivered or built on location, but about 90 percent of the business’

work is done on location. “We’ve also built carports and RV covers as well as allmetal garages,” he adds. “We stay busy and can do custom work. If you have an idea for a building that you would like, just ask.” In the company’s 16-year history, “We have never had a complaint about our buildings,” says Parson. “Our business has grown through word of mouth. We started with two buildings when we opened and it just continues to grow each year even though we are located in an out-of-the-way place. We’ve found that if you do everything better than the next guy, you’ll stay busy.” While they do mainly residential work, the company has expanded – again by referrals – to include portable building projects at public schools in Claremore, Jay, Catoosa, Inola, Locust Grove and Tulsa, as well as businesses such as Arby’s. “We have built storage buildings for Arby’s all over northeastern Oklahoma,” he says. “We have also constructed portable buildings for the City of Tulsa.” Conventional or Dutch Barn portable buildings include treated skids along with treated floor joists on 16-inch centers, ¾-inch tongue and groove flooring, #2 stud grade materials, a 25year factory warranty on Smart trim, 25-year warranty on Smart panel siding, 30# felt paper and a 30-year warranty on Tamko shingles.

Extras, like steel doors, windows, 4-foot loft, work bench and a 4-foot treated ramp, are available at an additional charge. Sizes begin at 8x8 up to 16x24 and larger. Pole barns, which range in size from 24x24 to 40x60, include one walk-in door and one 9x8 overhead door. An additional door is available for an extra charge. The company offers a 40-year manufacturer’s warranty on the 29-gauge metal used in the pole barns and loafing sheds while the insulation comes with a manufacturer’s 10-year warranty. Also included in the base price is a 4-inch concrete slab with rebar 18-inch on center in floor and 10-foot sidewalls. “We can build a pole barn, concrete included, within a week,” says Parson. “We can complete a portable building – built on site – in one day.” Although they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Parson will meet with potential customers at a different time to accommodate their schedules. “They just need to give us a call and we can work it out.” The company also offers rent-to-own options. EEggstraordinary Easter Gifts Shop The Nut House on historic Route 66 for unique candy and gifts.

By Carol Beck-Round

Easter is around the corner and if you want to add delicious goodies and unique items to your baskets or purchase a gift for someone special, The Nut House on historic Route 66 is the place to go. The vast array of products available at one of Claremore’s most famous destinations won’t be found in your local grocery store or any big-box store. Many are one-of-a-kind, made-in-house products that will have you returning time and again to check out the new offerings – and you’ll never leave empty handed, even if it’s just for a piece of the decadent, twoinch thick, quarter-pound squares of fudge. Some customers just brake for the fudge and “many look like they’re having fudge withdrawals when they walk through the doors,” laughs Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House. With over 18 different flavors of fudge available six days a week, it’s no wonder The Nut House has earned a reputation for the best homemade fudge in the area. “We will be offering some special fudge for Easter

along with chocolate-covered marshmallows,” says Hazel. “We make our own marshmallows which are heads above what you buy at the grocery store. Our confections are fresh with a really nice texture – they’re soft, not stretchy – and they are larger than what you find in a grocery store.” The marshmallow treats will also be decorated for Easter. “They’re great to put in a child’s Easter basket or as a gift to a friend,” she adds. Other wonderful Easter ideas include chocolatecovered strawberries and Peeps dipped in chocolate and decorated for Easter. “After dipping them in chocolate, we dress them up like they’re going to church,” says Hazel. “They’re really cute.” The Nut House also has an assortment of other Easter candy, stuffed animals, jewelry, candles, car charms and items of a spiritual nature that make great gifts or that can be added to a special basket for gift-giving. At The Nut House, one of the popular gifts available is personalized Easter baskets.

Baskets, which run from $30 and up, are created more for adult gift-giving, according to Hazel. “We offer baskets that are often built around a sentimental item. For example, we’ve had customers bring in the photo of an ultrasound to announce to their family members that they are expecting a baby,” she says. “The cost varies based on the items a customer purchases here to include in their basket.” While you’re shopping for Easter goodies at The Nut House, don’t forget to check out Hot Mama’s Deli, where you can select from a variety of sandwiches, salads, sides and sweet treats. A lunch combo is offered each day. “We also have daily specials with offerings like beans and cornbread and Hobo Tacos. “All of our food is homecooked,” Hazel adds. On Saturday, April 5 beginning at 10 a.m., a Day of Tasting is planned with free food sampling of new products available at The Nut House. “We’ll be offering a variety of new items, including Cowboy Tom’s Gluten-Free Pancake Mixes,”

The variety of homemade fudge available draws many to The Nut House. From left, Leslie Ward, owner Hazel Ward and Roxanne Smith are ready to help with your shopping experience.

says Hazel. “They are the lightest, fluffiest and most wholesome flapjacks I’ve ever tasted. They’re easy to make and so yummy.”On Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, The Nut House will host a Consignment Sale in Pecan Hall with a variety of items at great prices. Hazel adds that customers should not be discouraged by the highway construction going on in front of the business. “It’s not difficult to get in because

there’s a turn lane that leads you right into our driveway,” she adds. “We’re open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day but Sunday.” For more information, contact

Dr. Craig Day

“After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My whole life changed, not being able to escape the disabling pain. After cortisone epidurals in my spine, the pain returned. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. Dr. Day was one of the first doctors in the area to use this new treatment and has had over 30 years experience treating bad backs.

Dr. Craig Day’s Patient said “No!” to Back Surgery

Please join us Saturday, April 5 beginning at 10 a.m. for a Day of Tasting! Sample lots of new products.

So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am now able to get up in the morning and get dressed by myself, put my shoes on without holding on to something (which I haven’t been able to do in a very long time). I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said ''No!'' to back surgery.

LLet Your Personal Style Shine Twisted Soul Sisters specializes in custom jewelry and Southern fashion with flair.

By Stephanie Reed

Amid the sparkle and creative chaos, Bixby boutique owners Kelly Corey and Marti Coleman sit engrossed in creating custom jewelry with vintage embellishments. “The combination of the custom style and repurposing of vintage pieces ensures that customers will never purchase something and then run into it someplace else,” Kelly

explains. “We cater to the individual, and we want the individual’s style to shine.” The pair encourages customers to bring vintage pieces long forgotten from a family member’s collection, or to choose from a plethora of pieces available in the store. Once the embellishments are chosen, the ladies go to work creating

and stamping made-to-order necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Along with custom jewelry, Twisted Soul Sisters also offers Jane Marie and Lenny and Eva jewelry. Both lines feature interchangeable charms to make going from bracelets to necklaces a breeze. With 22 different

clothing lines gracing the racks, and boots from Old Gringo, Corral, and Liberty Black, Twisted Soul Sisters has the outfit to make any occasion. Patrons are sure to find an exceptional head-totoe look with brands that are unique to the Tulsa area. “We want ladies to be able to find the perfect outfit for that special event, whether it is a date or a concert,” Kelly says. “Our customers can be completely outfitted without the mall feel.” While Twisted Soul Sisters is certainly not a mall, the boutique does manage to have something for everyone on your list. With brands like Shannon Martin, and her signature flasks and coasters, along with Mud Pie, the store carries great hostess gifts and a little something for the hard-to-buy-for crowd. And when you find that perfect gift, be sure to take advantage of the free gift wrapping. Can’t decide which gift is more perfect than the next? No worries, gift cards are always available. In addition to great gifts, Plaster Paint is another hot item in the store. It is an affordable, no-prep paint that works beautifully on a variety

of surfaces – even metals. Extremely versatile, plaster paint comes in 30 different colors and is around half the price of its leading competitors. Twisted Soul Sisters offers regular promotions and layaway for boots and clothing. Savings range from 25 percent off denim to BOGO T-shirts to 20 percent off custom jewelry creations. "Like our Twisted Soul Sisters Facebook page and watch for special Thursday dates when we host Ladies' Nights and stay open late. You'll also find out about new merchandise and store specials," says Kelly. The spring collection is in; check out the new arrivals for a sassy look, and pick out a gift for your own soul sister. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, contact

AA Dental Plan to Make You Smile Dr. Steven White offers an innovative alternative that makes dental care affordable.

By Duane Blankenship

Steven White, D.D.S., is the owner of White Cosmetic and Family Dentistry. Dr. White has been in practice since 1977. “White Smile” offers a full range of dental services for your whole family, starting with preventive and restorative procedures for children to dentures and implants for adults. Dr. White’s services include cosmetic dentistry, TMJ therapy, Invisalign teeth straightening, and treatment for snoring problems. “We are also very concerned about gum disease and the effects it can have on a person’s overall health,” he adds. Dr. White is

able to treat those who are very fearful and require sedation or to be “put to sleep” in order to have dental work completed. “Our mission,” says Dr. White, “is to provide our patients highquality dentistry in a friendly, comfortable and caring environment.” As healthcare debates continue, Dr. White has taken a step to help Tulsa area families afford quality dental care. “More than 60 percent of Americans do without dental insurance because they feel they can’t afford it,” said Dr. White. “A recent CBS News report indicated dental

decay as a contributing factor in many seemingly unrelated issues including employment problems, heart disease and childhood school absences. It’s not unusual for a child to be in chronic pain because a simple cavity was not caught and treated in time.” Dr. White says much of the cost of dental care is going to third parties: the insurance companies, claims form administrators and collection costs. When a potential dental problem is detected early – through regular exams and preventive procedures including cleanings and fluoride

The White Cosmetic and Family Dentistry staff includes (L to R): Dr. Steven White, Lonna White, Jessica Klassen, Tara Coble, Tracey Mulkey and Jessica Shaw.

treatments – and then treated, it inherently saves you money, much more than if you wait to receive treatment after the problem has become a greater issue. You’ve heard the old saying, “Pay me now or pay me later.” When Dr. White and his staff saw the hundreds of dollars families were spending for treatments that could have been avoided by early detection through simple routine checkups, they chose to put a tailored plan in action that is currently being made available in selected dental offices across the nation. The plan is both simple and ingenious and is called QDP (Quality Dental Plan). Dr. White says, “I have found that we can offer free exams, free teeth cleanings with all necessary exams and 20 percent off most dental procedures, by offering our own in-house dental savings plan. QDP eliminates the insurance company middle man and their huge profits, and puts the savings back in your pocket.” Dr. White said the premiums individuals or employers pay for dental insurance more than covers the costs of two cleanings, exams and preventive care in most dental

offices. Instead of wasting these dollars on excessive premiums, they can be used instead for needed treatment. With this plan, you and your family will have no reason to avoid recommended checkups and cleanings. Dr. White also hopes that the cost savings potential of QDP will make sense to employers as an alternative to offering current dental insurance options to their employees. When you visit “White Smile,” you’ll find a full range of services utilizing only the latest materials, techniques and technologies available. They have a beautiful, comfortable office with a friendly, caring and helpful staff. Call the office of White Cosmetic and Family Dentistry and schedule a consultation to receive additional information about their in-house QDP. For more information, contact

Welcome to the first installment of Go Downtown with Value News! Every month will highlight entertainment, dining and other activities in Downtown Tulsa, helping readers make the most of their time and money in each district. By Christopher Davis Downtown Tulsa is bursting with original music and art, quirky shops, exciting dining options, and plays host to several professional sports teams and regular concerts from big name performers.

5K, runners are encouraged to dress in costume and race against the Elote Luchadores, dodging “urban obstacles.”

Blue Dome District BOK Center The BOK Center continues to draw large crowds and top acts, selling over 400,000 concert tickets in 2013. Things begin to heat up in April, as Kings of Leon take the stage on April 8 and George Strait on April 19. Also, the Oklahoma Defenders, Tulsa’s professional indoor football team, takes on the Bloomington Edge on April 12 and the Wichita Wild on April 26. Visit www.bokcenter.com for tickets and details on all events and concerts.

Brady Arts District The Brady Arts District is home to some of Tulsa’s best music venues, art galleries and dining. While in the area, stop by Chimera for a bite to eat and a drink before the show. Chimera, run by two native Tulsans and located at 212 N. Main St., serves unique food, coffee and beverages. Touting a menu suitable for vegans, vegetarians or carnivores, everyone is sure to leave with a full stomach and smile on their face. In addition to an extensive wine and beer list, they serve cocktails and award-winning coffee.

Deco District At the heart of Downtown Tulsa is the Deco District. Home to beautifully preserved art deco buildings, this district has witnessed renewed interest lately. Perfect for a date night or a mini tour for visiting friends, soak up some of the charm of 1920s architecture and grab a bite. Elote Café & Catering, located at 514 S. Boston Ave, is widely credited with spearheading the Deco District Revival. This funky, hip “fresh Mex” restaurant embodies the culture of downtown. Specializing in Mexican cuisine made from locallysourced ingredients, Elote is healthy and fun. Over the years, the restaurant added lucha libre wrestling (a style of wrestling popular in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, in which the wrestlers wear masks and boast colorful personalities) to its list of events, and it stuck. Today, Elote hosts regular wrestling matches, starring its own cast of luchador wrestlers. On Saturday, April 5 at 5 p.m., Elote hosts the annual Luchador Run, benefitting the Tulsa YMCA. Featuring a one mile fun run and a

Blue Dome District, which surrounds the intersection of Elgin and 2nd, blends entertainment, dining and shopping. Offering something for everyone, the district is a hub of excitement day and night. Located at 119 S. Detroit Ave., Dwelling Spaces is a quirky, Tulsa-centric gift shop that specializes in Oklahoma music, art, coffee and…robots. On any given weekend, one is equally likely to find live music, an art exhibit or book signing, as the store has become a popular stop for Okie creative-types. Just around the corner is the latest venture from Tulsa City Councilman and entrepreneur Blake Ewing. White Flag, located at 116 S. Elgin, serving hamburgers and drinks, is quickly becoming a popular venue for live music in the district. To view a menu and learn more about events, visit www.whiteflagtulsa.com.

ONEOK Field

This year’s Luchador Run hosted by Elote will be Saturday, April 5.

Just north of Blue Dome District, at 201 N. Elgin, is ONEOK Field, home to the Tulsa Drillers. The Drillers host Corpus Christi on Thursday, April 3, for opening night, followed by games against San Antonio and Arkansas throughout the month. With tickets starting at $5 (with $2 lawn tickets on Tuesdays), a baseball game downtown is a fun and affordable family outing. Visit www.milb.com for game schedule and tickets.

Guthrie Green Just across from the ball field, at 111 E. Brady St., is Guthrie Green – a wide open lawn designed for community events. April marks the beginning of the Sunday Market, a farmers market that runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday until the end of October. Guthrie Green showcases live music, as well. On Saturday, April 26, at 7 p.m. catch Chamber Music Tulsa present “Bohemian” Rhapsody. The concert features the American String Quartet performing music with bohemian connections and exploring themes of passion, jealousy, betrayal, birdsong, folk dances, trains, homesickness and more. On Sunday, April 27, get a double dose of music. Starting at 2 p.m., Horton Records presents Shinyribs, Pilgrim and Honeylark. Reclaiming American History created a totally new concept using large beams and wood from buildings and barns. The resulting success is known as Timber Frame Furniture.” Timber Frame Furniture is bold, sturdy, and built to last. The unique pieces are graced with a natural patina that only Father Time and Mother Nature can provide. Support beams that once sustained the weight of the season’s hay supply are now reclaimed to become massive table legs, bedposts and stretcher beams. Antiquated roof trusses and siding boards have become

impressive doors, drawers and table tops. It’s a real treat to stroll through The Refuge Lifestyle and appreciate the unique collection of Green Gables furniture and other home furnishings and decorations. You don’t need a rustic-style home to utilize the furnishings found at The Refuge Lifestyle. “Our furniture is rustic,” said Clinton, “but it is very classy, of the highest quality and will fit in any home, whatever the style.” Customers building new homes or wanting to revitalize existing ones enjoy visiting with Clinton and Robin, who have lots of ideas to share about the beauti-

World Malaria Day Is April 25th often leading to misdiagnosis. The disease can lay dormant in the liver and reactivate after periods of dormancy for two to even four years. Pregnant women and children under the age of five are particularly susceptible. Researchers have found that the best way to fight malaria is to prevent it. Mosquito nets, which shelter and protect five people, have proven especially effective. The problem – in the last year, major distributors have decreased the number of nets distributed, and the death toll has risen. According to WHO, the net distribu-

tion total is down 50 percent from 2010. The solution – local nonprofits are raising money to distribute nets in affected areas, and we can help. Phyllis Morris is one such individual who is helping; together with Katheryn Pennington, they founded Kairos10, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting malaria in Ghana. “This mission is so close to my heart. As a parent, when you see your children suffer, you will do anything to help ease their pain. We are so fortunate to have qualified doctors and hospitals, but so many families in Ghana have to watch their babies suffer and

Registration forms are available now or you may register from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. the morning of the event. Judging is scheduled for 11 a.m. and award presentations at 3 p.m. While you’re attending the event, be sure to purchase a ticket for a chance to win a GM Performance Crate Engine. The raffle prize is a 350 HO Base crate engine that will add some V8 muscle to your older vehicle restoration. Tickets will be available at TTCU Sapulpa Branch and at the Sapulpa Main Street office.

Kairos10 purchases Ghanaian beads made from recycled glass, vinyl records, bones, and brass from local merchants and pays native women to make jewelry. The jewelry is then sold in the United States, and the proceeds are used to purchase and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets. Thus far, Kairos10 has succeeded in protecting over 110,000 people from malaria through the distribution of mosquito nets.

PPurses of Hope Attend the silent auction event benefitting local pediatric cancer patients on Sunday, April 6.

By Sheryl Sowell

Pierce Phillips, a beautiful baby boy with captivating blue eyes, was born on July 30, 2007 to Scott and Brandi Phillips. Pierce was an easygoing child, and people often referred to him as an old soul because of his demeanor and eyes that seemed to be full of wisdom. At 13 months old, Pierce was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an especially deadly form of cancer. Pierce underwent several forms of treatment including high dose chemotherapy, surgeries,

Pierce Phillips was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at only 13 months old.

radiation and immunotherapy. After these aggressive treatments, Pierce achieved NED status; no evidence of cancer was detected. His family enjoyed the next few months at their home in Tulsa with their healthy son. Unfortunately, Pierce’s disease was highly relentless and returned. In the arms of his mother and surrounded by family, Pierce earned his angel wings on October 9, 2009. Childhood cancer occurs regularly, randomly, and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region. One in 133 children will have been diagnosed with cancer by the time they reach the age of 20. Each year, 4,000 children die from cancer – 11 children every single day, every single year. Since 2010, Pierce Phillips Charity, started by Scott and Brandi in memory of their son, has helped fund three Phase 1 Clinical Trials, currently being conducted at various cancer research centers throughout the United States, and supported

numerous Tulsa families with children who are fighting cancer. Pierce’s grandmother, Margie Day, created the Purses of Hope event five years to help local families in need of assistance during this emotionally and financially draining time. “When a child battles cancer, it is very expensive. The silent auction event raises money to help families in any way that they need it, including house and car payments, gas cards and medications. Each family is allowed to apply for financial help once a year,” says Margie. “My girlfriends Cynthia Hoffman, Donna Peabody and Patricia Phillips (Pierce’s other grandmother) are the best and really are the ones that make this happen. They supply and donate all the food and their time. If it were not for them, there is no way this event could take place.” The 5th annual Purses of Hope will be held Sunday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Bar H Vista Farm in Mounds, 20 minutes south of Tulsa.

Margie Day (second from right) and friends show a few of the purses that will be available at Purses of Hope.

Attendees will enjoy refreshments while bidding on their favorites among 50+ purses in the silent auction. “The purses are either new or gently used and include brands like Coach and Kate Spade,” says Margie. “There is a purse for every style and price range.” All proceeds will provide financial support for area pediatric cancer patients via the Pierce Phillips Charity Grant Program. In addition, the event will help fund Bingo Night and Candy Bar Night, a bi-weekly program at St. Francis Children’s Hospital. Those who bring a new toy to Purses of Hope will be entered into the drawing for a variety of door prizes. The toys collected will be distributed during Bingo Nights. “We need toys for

boys and girls ages three months to 16 years. We are always looking for new ideas for older kids, such as iTunes gift cards, knitting kits, nail polish and model kits.” Admission is $10 in advance online at www.piercephillipscharity.org or $15 at the door. Bar H Vista Farm is located at 18451 S. Lewis Ave in Mounds. Take Highway 75 South; turn east on 181st Street, right on Lewis, and go a half-mile to the large white fence and follow the road to the barn.

SSaving for a Rainy Day RCB Bank offers tips for building an emergency fund.

By Jocelyn Wood

Life happens. Sometimes it happens according to plan. Occasionally, an unforeseen rain shower pours down – a busted water pipe, a broken down car, a job loss. Though we cannot forecast the unexpected expenses that pop up after a downpour, we can open an umbrella to shield us from dipping into debt. Tara Depperschmidt, of RCB Bank, and her husband use a simple strategy to build their rainy day fund for emergencies. It’s based on a single principle: pay yourself first. “When my husband and I first got married, he was in school and we were living payday to payday,” said Depperschmidt. “We knew that if something came up and we needed extra funds, we would be in a great deal of trouble, so we thought we better think of some creative ways to try to save a little bit of money.” Their creative thinking led to a solution that required only a small change in their budgeting habits. To start, they figured out what their

lowest paychecks would be each payday and used that as the base of their budget. “If $500 is my base budget and I made $525 on a paycheck, I’d set aside the $25,” said Depperschmidt. “We already determined we could survive on the $500, so why not pretend we don't have the $25 and save it for an emergency?” When their paychecks increase, for example to $550, they increase their savings to $50. “I figure I have managed with $500 all this time, so why not continue to set aside the extra money?” Depperschmidt admits it’s a mental issue to make certain you put aside the money. When she sits down on payday to look over her bills, first and foremost, she pays herself. “Saving money is never a fun thing to do but once you really get it in your mind that it’s the right thing to do, and when an unexpected expense comes up and you can cover it debt-free, makes it a great thing to do,” Depperschmidt said.

There are numerous banking products that can help a person save – checking and savings accounts, money market accounts, 30-day CDs – but it truly depends on individual circumstances when it comes to choosing which one will work best for you. If you’re unsure, the best thing to do is speak with a professional banker. “Something, anything you save is better than nothing,” said Depperschmidt. “I have two checking accounts and one savings. One checking is my everyday account which I use for everything. The second checking account is used for saving for specific reasons, like an upcoming vacation. My savings account is for emergencies only, money that I want limited access to.” To learn more about how RCB Bank’s products and services can not only help you save for a rainy day, but reward you in the process, stop by your local RCB Bank and chat with one of our friendly bankers. You can also call us at 855-BANKRCB or live chat online at

There will be a large variety of plants, gardening information, garden art, unique art and craft vendors, a kids’ zone with fun activities, and food and fun for the whole family.

While strolling along the beautiful landscape of the mansion’s front lawn, you will have the opportunity to shop for special garden plants. Area plant nurseries will offer the newest and best plant selections for 2014. The popular Linnaeus Teaching Garden pass-along plant tent will be full of plants for sale from the gardens of Linnaeus gardeners and other friends of the Tulsa Garden Center. Take this opportunity to ask any gardening questions you might have of these professional nursery men and women and Linnaeus

gardeners. Confirmed plant vendors are Colebrook Nursery, Duck Creek Farms, Grogg’s Green Barn, Roses, Inc. Green Country, Timber Ridge Farms, Utopia Gardens, and Clear Creek Farm & Gardens. Affiliates of the Tulsa Garden Center will also be on hand to describe their organizations. Confirmed affiliates are: Green Country Water Garden Society, Linnaeus Gardeners, Northeastern Oklahoma Beekeepers Association, Tulsa Area Daylily Society, Tulsa Area Iris Society, Tulsa

(L to R): Barbie Raney, executive director of Tulsa Garden Center; Mike Blake, education and marketing manager of Tulsa Garden Center; and Mary Lou Havener, chairperson of SpringFest Garden Market and Festival.

Garden Club, Tulsa Herb Society, Tulsa Master Gardeners, and Up With Trees. Bring the whole family and spend a fun-filled day at this spring event. The children’s area will offer multiple entertaining and educational activities. These activities include face painting, balloons, the Adopt-a-Pet Van from SPCA, the Reading Van from Tulsa City/County Library, pictures with the Easter Bunny, planting takehome butterfly-attracting plants and creating pet rocks. Vendors outside and inside the historical Tulsa Garden Center home will offer exceptional craft items for you, your home and garden. Confirmed vendors are: Nancy Grayson-Garden Art, Beth Teel-Hypertuffa Pots, Donna PrigmorePottery, All About Metal, All Clay, Apostrophe…at Addie Eva’s Attic, Archana GuptaSilversmith, Artistry & Old Lace, B&K Enterprises, Basket Sensations, Buzz Art, Creations by Tina, Déjà vu Décor, Dutchess Chocolates, Ella’s Dips, Empowering Nations, F.
