The Ten Tenors will travel to Broken Arrow for their performance on Jan. 24.

This holiday season, Choices for Life Foster Care invites you to consider opening your heart and home to a child who needs your help. Choices for Life is an agency that specializes in therapeutic foster care for children with unique needs. Working with DHS, the agency places children from traumatizing households with foster parents who are willing to go above and beyond usual expectations and provide loving homes that will encourage healing, learning and growth. The need for qualified and responsible foster parents willing to take on relatively challenging cases is ongoing. Harold Thompson, clinical supervisor at CFL, is candid about the unique qualities they look for in potential

foster parents. “They need to understand the reality of the situation,” he says. The cases that CFL takes on often

involve heartbreaking stories, ranging from physical and emotional abuse to drug (continued on page 24)

CCheck Off Your List All at Once You can finish your Christmas shopping early with the unique selection of Surceé Gifts and Home.

By Susan Erler

Have you ever noticed that some people just seem to be more organized when it comes to the holidays? By December 3rd, they are lounging in front of the fireplace, sipping hot chocolate and enjoying the season. “What is their secret?” you may ask. Instead of fighting the crowds at the mall or at the big box stores, they do their holiday gift shopping at

Surceé Gifts and Home in Owasso. Located at 9455 Owasso Expressway in the Tyann Plaza, Surceé offers unique and one-of-a-kind items in every price range. Laura Sanders, owner, brings in the hottest new holiday items for you and your home, and it is her goal each year to make the season fun and easy for all of

her customers. “With Christmas right around the corner, customers will find a huge selection of fabulous gifts sure to please everyone on their list,” says Laura. “And we offer free gift wrapping with every purchase. Just walk in and choose an item, then walk out with a beautifully wrapped package. One stop and you are done!” As you browse the store, take notice of the individual themes created within. Laura and her team of experts have created specific vignettes, each filled with gifts perfect for teachers or anyone else you want to show appreciation to. Most are under $25. Themes include Nutcrackers, Woodland Wonderland, Inspirational, and Vintage, and each tree is filled with gorgeous ornaments and décor items. Do you have a college student or sports fan fanatic on your list? They have an entire area decked out in orange and red, devoted to unique Oklahoma State University and University of Oklahoma T-shirts, scarves, ornaments, picture frames, jewelry and more. The selection is impressive, but items are selling fast. Hurry in before they are gone!

Cookbooks are always a great gift, and Surceé has many to choose from, including all six of the wildly popular “Gathering of Friends” series and many written by Oklahoma’s own Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. Stop by and pick up several. Laura loves helping customers find the perfect gift. "Customers can come in anytime to fill out their Wish List," explains Laura. "Send your loved ones in and we will help them shop from your personalized list. Of course, gift wrapping is included." Be sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, December 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. "Santa and his elves will be here, so this is a fun night for everyone. Bring your camera and capture some magical holiday memories." Holiday shopping has never been easier. Surceé is showcasing a new line of jewelry, Lenny and Eva, which has been so popular they can’t keep it in stock. This vintage inspired line allows you to personalize everything from cuff bracelets to pendants with charms, beads, and sayings. So fun and so “you.” For a special lady on your list, surround her in the softness and comfort of

bamboo with choices from Face Plant. They specialize in everything she needs to help soothe her nerves and let her drift off into a peaceful slumber. Soft, snuggly robes, slippers that cradle your feet in memory foam, night shirts and pillows emblazoned with motivational inscriptions are all thoughtful gifts designed to give her the best gift of all, a good night’s sleep! “We also specialize in corporate gift giving,” says Laura. “We will create gift baskets filled with unique and tasty food items, personal care items, or any number of special treats perfect for friends, family and business associates. And we can work within any budget.” Don’t forget! The number of shopping days is dwindling, and Surceé is here to help by offering extended hours every Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. during the month of December. For easy holiday shopping, make a stop at Surceé a must! For more information, contact

SSalon Has a Heart for Giving BA Highlights Salon will provide free haircuts and other cosmetology services to the young women of Project Manna Girls’ Home.

By Sheryl Sowell

BA Highlights Salon recently began a partnership with Project Manna Girls’ Home, an initiative to establish the first girls' home in the Tulsa area. A development of Launch Ministries Inc., Project Manna Girls' Home is a foster and community home that focuses on transitional living. The goal is to assist DHS with preparing young ladies for adulthood,

providing stability and an environment that will offer safety, encouragement, support and healing for girls ages 12 through 21. The home can house up to six young ladies. They currently have three living in the house, and anticipate two more and a newborn by Christmas. One of the young women is pregnant and expecting a baby girl any day now.

Ashley Walker of the Project Manna Girls’ Home and Michelle Whitney, owner of BA Highlights Salon.

Elaine Collins, hairstylist at BA Highlights Salon, was watching the news recently and saw a segment about the Project Manna Girls’ Home. “I’ve seen firsthand how harsh life can be for kids who have aged out of the DHS system. This story really touched my heart and I knew I wanted to be a part of this project.” Elaine immediately had the inspiration to help by offering hair and nail services to the young women. She discussed it with BA Highlights owner Michelle Whitney, who loved the idea. The salon contacted Ashley Walker, and a partnership was formed. BA Highlights Salon will provide the young women with free haircuts, eyebrow waxing, shampoo and conditioner, and nail services for special occasions. “It’s exciting to see the confidence boost the girls had after their first real salon experience,” says Ashley, who developed the Manna project. “These are young women who are or who were once in DHS custody and considered at risk, and they never really had opportunities like this before.

It’s wonderful to see the change in them, especially in one young lady who had not cared very much about her appearance. She is now excited about her doing her hair every day, and has developed a great sense of confidence and poise because of the experience.” BA Highlights Salon will have an ongoing partnership with the Project Manna Girls’ Home, which is undergoing a capital campaign for expansion in January. If you would like to help these young ladies, BA Highlights Salon will be a drop-off location for items on their Christmas wish list. A few of the items the girls need include pre-cooked meals, gift cards to Wal-Mart and Target, diapers and other supplies for the baby on the way, hygiene products, clothing, shoes and jewelry, and headphones. For a complete list of items or other ways to help, contact Ashley Walker at (918) 688-7100 or info@freetolaunch.com. While you are dropping off items for the Christmas list, be sure to make an appointment with one of the

talented cosmetologists at BA Highlights Salon to spruce up your look and dazzle this holiday season. The salon offers a full range of services including haircuts and styling, color and highlights, skin care, makeup, waxing, massage therapy, manicures and pedicures, acrylics and nail art. Owner Michelle would like to welcome three new stylists to the BA Highlights team: Belinda Fleming and sisters Christina Johnston and Kelley Mitchell. “We’re excited to have these talented ladies become a part of our family.” She also extends well wishes to one of their team members, Claire Parker, who has been out sick for about a month. “Claire, your BA Highlights family hopes you get well soon and misses you very much – especially your clients!”

SShe’s Back Dancing

Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helps patient Ramona Wimp get her life back.

By Carol Beck-Round

Ramona Wimp is a selfdefined go-getter. Three years ago, however, Ramona, who is now in her early 50s, began experiencing excruciating pain in her legs and back. “I couldn’t even walk across a parking lot without pain,” she says. Ramona, who had spent her life in active pursuits like horseback riding, dancing and playing with her two daughters, suddenly found

herself incapacitated, unable not only to enjoy her usual activities, but also unable to take care of her family. “When I got home in the evening from work, I had to use my hands to lift my legs, one at a time, out of the car,” she adds. “I could barely climb the steps to our front door.” After arriving home, Ramona often found herself curled in a fetal position,

trying to fight the pain. “I couldn’t even clean my house,” she says. “The pain affected every area of my life, including driving. I couldn’t drive very far without excruciating pain.” An optimistic and outgoing woman by nature, Ramona continued to smile at work, greeting those who walked through the doors of Claremore’s Goodwill, where she is a customer service man-

www.ValueNews.com ager. However, the smile hid the pain she fought daily. “My co-workers were so great,” she says. “They worked with me, allowing me to sit on a stool behind the counter as a cashier when I couldn’t do my regular work.” Some days, she couldn’t even manage that. “The pain would get the best of me sometimes and I’d have to leave work.” Because she had never had a back injury or been involved in an accident, Ramona couldn’t understand why she was in so much pain. “I had ridden horses a lot when I was younger,” she explains. “I’d been bucked and kicked but never had any pain.” In the past, she had also competed in 5K races, leading to knee trouble and a procedure to offer some relief. “I had a lot of wear and tear on my knees,” she adds, “but I couldn’t see how that could affect my back.” Ramona had been to different doctors, including 20 sessions with a chiropractor. “I had also been to an orthopedic surgeon,” she says. “I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs, so I asked him about my options.” Seeing the specialist revealed problems with degenerative discs in her back. “He is the one who suggested spinal decompression as an option, but I still waited for awhile,” she says. A visit and several tests with Dr. Dwight J. Korgan at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma eventually led to her giving spinal decompression a try. “I am so glad I

did,” she says. “It literally gave me my life back.” Before Ramona finally made the decision to try IDD Therapy, she was at work one day when Ebony Jones, the office technician for Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, saw her suffering from muscle spasms. “Even though I had a smile on my face, Ebony saw I was in pain by the way I moved slowly around the store,” she says. “She convinced me to move ahead with the spinal decompression.” After 20 treatments, which she began this past January, Ramona says, “I can’t believe how good I feel. I’m back to my old self, enjoying those things I couldn’t do before.” One thing this energetic mother does is keep up with her daughters, ages 12 and 14. “They are both active in afterschool activities that involve my driving them to lessons and other appointments, Monday through Friday,” she says. “Without pain, I can now enjoy driving them to the places they need to be. I couldn’t do that before I had spinal decompression.” Ramona encourages anyone suffering from back pain to see if spinal decompression is an option. “It gave me a new lease on life.” For more information, contact

DRing the Bells for Christmas Kettles Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club enables Broken Arrow youth to reach full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

By Duane Blankenship

You are probably aware of some of the remarkable work done by the Salvation Army, but likely have no idea of their total outreach, not only across our country, but in Broken Arrow. The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow has a simple mission statement: to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

the blessing,” said Captain Lucas. “We have doubled the number of kettle locations to 40 this season, but have been unable to hire additional employees to assist us. We desperately need employees and volunteer organizations willing to assist in the Christmas kettle activity.” Counter Kettles are placed at Arby’s, Arvest Bank, Rib Crib, and Merritt’s Bakery. There are outdoor kettle sites at Neighborhood Market, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Big Lots, Reasor’s, Michael’s, Warehouse Market, Hobby Lobby and BassPro Shops. This year’s goal is $225,000. If you, your civic organization, church or club is interested in helping, please contact the Salvation Army of Broken Arrow. Monies raised from “Ring the Bells for Christmas Kettles” benefits many Salvation Army programs, including the Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow. Nearly 100,000 faces pass through the doors of the Broken Arrow club each year. “Our organization has been blessed with an opportunity to increase funding for all Salvation Army programs, but we have found ourselves in a dilemma despite

Guards, a Christ-oriented adventure program; and Power Hour, a program that helps 6 to 18 year olds with home work. Additional programs include swimming, available to children and adults of Broken Arrow; Challenger Basketball, Challenger Art and Challenger Swim programs are custom designed for adults and children with special needs. There is Youth Basketball for boys and girls ages 6 to 18 and Flag Football for boys in kindergarten through 6th grades. Small Ball is basketball for four, five and six year olds and is played on a full court, four on four, with six-foot high goals. “We also have a wrestling program and we’re still taking sign-ups,” said Blackmon. Wrestling teams practice two times each week, have a tournament every weekend November through March, and are members of OKWA (Oklahoma Kids Wrestling Association). There are Open and Novice Divisions in all age groups, but kids are never required to participate in tournaments.

The Broken Arrow Boys & Girls Club has the only girls' rugby team in our state. They recently participated in a Dallas tournament and won first place – undefeated! Blackmon says two team members have been invited to play on the National Girls Rugby Team. The Broken Arrow team is coached by Gayla Adcock. Many additional programs are offered by the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow. In short, this is a wonderful organization that is making a difference in the lives of Broken Arrow children and adults. Outside The Castle, you can take a hayride or a carriage ride through the Village, ride the ponies or the camel, and visit the petting zoo. Stop inside The Castle for old-fashioned family holiday activities. Bring your kids to make ornaments in Santa’s workshop, warm up by the fireplace, and plan your visit with Father Christmas – and keep your eyes open for The Mean Green One, too! Stop in for some holiday shopping with a variety of merchants, and pick up something unique for yourself or a loved one. Get fireworks for New Year’s Eve celebrations and items from The Christmas Shoppe for your own holiday displays. Join us in the Royal Garden Cafe for a light supper or snack, hot chocolate and treats, and great company. Sit and enjoy holiday movies for the whole family. Father Christmas will be at the Castle on Fridays and Saturdays through December 21. There is no cost to talk to

Father Christmas, and pictures will be available for a nominal fee. Please check the calendar at www.okcastle.com for exact dates. The 2013 Castle Christmas displays range from four feet in height to a towering 20 feet tall. You’ll see all of your favorite Christmas characters including Santa, the elves, many snowmen, reindeer, penguins, polar bears and more. Also you will see many of your favorite fun characters including Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Scooby Doo, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, the Grinch, Elmo, Frosty the Snowman, Homer and Bart Simpson, plus many more. “This is the world’s largest display of inflatables,” says Matt Hiller, vice president and advertising director of the Castle of Muskogee. “Bring the whole family for a fun, wholesome evening to celebrate the holidays.” In nearby Honor Heights Park, the Garden of Lights attracts thousands of visitors.

The celebration includes a free drive-through display of over a million shimmering lights displayed throughout the park. Internationally known for its Azalea Festival, Honor Heights Park draws up to a half million visitors annually to its 122 acres, which are planted with more than 30,000 azalea bushes and thousands of trees, beautifully situated among the park’s scenic hilltop drive. Christmas lights are placed on trees, bushes, and structures throughout the park to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, waterfalls, and ponds. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. nightly, and the event is free. Both drive-through events are open nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Mustard Seed Holiday Open House will be Saturday, December 7 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and will offer storewide discounts, prizes and refreshments. Diana Clark and her son John started the consignment shop seven years ago after they were approached by local interior designers and decorators with the idea of opening a quality furniture consignment shop that offered impeccable integrity and service. Diana and John discovered there were many people needing a way to sell and buy gently-used highquality home furnishings and decided it was a good opportunity to fill that need. They discovered that people’s needs can be triggered by events like moving, a change in décor, a new house, and other life transitions. Many people are downsizing, moving to assisted living, or setting up their first household. Those who have lost a loved one often need a dignified and respectful way to place furniture and décor into the hands of a new

owner. These people love the tasteful surroundings and warm assistance that Mustard Seed Door is known for. Mustard Seed Door receives new items every day and merchandise moves quickly. Things sell so quickly that many customers come in regularly two or three times a week to browse the new items. While many of their customers are right here in Tulsa, a number of customers come from outside the Tulsa area including Eufaula, Edmond, Enid, Oklahoma City, Lawton, Norman, and Muskogee. Others come from out of state including Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas – even New York! Almost all of their business is referral or repeat. Customers soon learn that they better buy something they love the minute they see it because it will likely be gone before they return. At Mustard Seed Door, you can furnish and decorate your whole house or enhance any room – dining room, living room, bedroom, office, bath or kitchen. Mustard

Seed Door offers an amazing variety. You can find one piece of accent furniture or make your house sparkle for the holidays with an original oil, tribal rug, designer floral, new lamps or a set of antique books. The shop has wonderful custom drapes and bedding too. You may also find a unique chandelier, print, clock, or mirror for a fraction of its original cost. Mustard Seed Door supports local causes with a special fondness for the Salvation Army and organizations that serve children and families. They are proud members of the Better Business Bureau and employ six wonderful Tulsans ranging in age from the thirties to the seventies. Mustard Seed Door has two priorities: serving the customer, and offering a unique, relaxed shopping experience. The customer always comes first. With honesty and integrity, Diana and John have built their consignment business into one of Tulsa’s best-loved family-owned businesses. Mark your calendar for the Holiday Open house on December 7. BBe Extraordinary The 2014 Extraordinary Women Conference will be February 28-March 1 at the Mabee Center.

By Sheryl Sowell

Ladies, you are extraordinary women of God and you deserve a weekend to celebrate this fact! Mark your calendars now for the Extraordinary Women Conference, a weekend designed to help you draw closer to the heart of God and His amazing plan for your daily life. EWomen is

not just a Christian women’s event – it’s a lifestyle. The conference will be held at the Mabee Center, February 28 through March 1, 2014. Julie Clinton, president of Extraordinary Women, has spoken to hundreds of thousands of women as host of EWomen conferences all across America. A person of

deep faith, she cares passionately about seeing women live out their dreams by finding their freedom in Christ. “We as women give of ourselves all day, every day – to our husbands, children, careers and households – but we rarely give back to ourselves. This conference is our way of giving back to women, offering them a weekend away to experience hope and healing through Jesus Christ,” says Julie. “Extraordinary Women shares with all women, regardless of their religious affiliation, the love, acceptance and completeness God has for us.” The conference will include music, praise and worship, entertainment and special guest speakers. “Our speakers will discuss issues related to women, many that aren’t necessarily talked about at church on Sunday morning, such as divorce, illness and disappointment,” says Julie. The theme of this year’s conference, “The Joyful

Surgeon Can YYour Make the Difference Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experiences with two surgeons. By Joshua Danker-Dake

Patsy Wessel of Oilton had a positive knee replacement operation with Dr. Ronald LaButti.

When Patsy Wessel, 73, of Oilton, Oklahoma, had knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti last year, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The difference in the two procedures, she says, was like night and day. “I had already had one surgery done, and it was very painful,” Wessel says. “I didn’t have a good experience with my first doctor, and I didn’t feel like my physical therapist did a very good job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good experience with him.” Wessel’s knee problems developed gradually, over decades, she says. “I’m 73 years old, and I’m in my 35th year in my job, where I walk and stand on cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cement floors. I’ve worked hard in my life, you know? You just wear your knees out.” Wessel says the knee replacement with Dr.

LaButti was an immeasurably better experience than her previous surgery. “Yes, I had pain – it’s always painful. But for a knee replacement, it was significantly better,” she says. “I had much less pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told me that the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, I was able to get up and walk without so much pain because of how well it was done. I wasn’t even on my cane or walker more than a week before I could walk by myself.” A big part of Wessel’s good experience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passive motion machine for physical therapy, and Wessel says it worked wonders. “Dr. LaButti sent me home with this machine: for two hours, three times a day, you put your leg in it, and it raises and works your knee. It worked wonderfully, and it

doesn’t hurt.” Wessel says her first doctor didn’t use that machine. “He had someone physically doing it, and they can hurt you. Sometimes I was crying by the time they finished. But with the machine, it didn’t hurt, and it kept the knee limber. It worked so well.” Overall, Wessel says, her experience was exceptional. “The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, and he was very nice. I’ve already recommended Dr. LaButti to a number of people, and I would recommend him to anyone.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. DDevoted to the Strength of Family Foster care parents are needed to bridge the gap for children in Rogers County.

By Carol Beck-Round

Eighty-five Rogers County children need a foster family. Due to abuse or neglect, these children have been removed from their biological homes and are currently living in emergency shelters or foster homes. However, with only 14 non-relative foster homes available in Rogers County at this time, there is a dire need for families to provide these children with love, stability and guidance. Statewide, according to Jason Cecil, director of TFI Family Connections recruitment, Oklahoma has a huge shortage of foster parents. “Rogers County is one of those in desperate need of foster families,” he says. In a new effort to keep up with the rising number of children coming into the foster care system, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) has awarded contracts to private partnerships for the recruitment, support and retention of foster families. TFI Family Connections, LLC is one of these private not-for-profits that will now work to recruit and retain fos-

ter families. “We will be working alongside OKDHS to service the entire state of Oklahoma with the exception of the Oklahoma City area,” says Cecil. TFI will help support families as they interact with OKDHS throughout the foster care approval process and during placement and care of children in their homes. They also help provide an understanding of the child welfare system. “A large number of children in custody are placed in shelter care, even as young as five or six years of age,” says Cecil. “Because of a lack of foster homes and enough emergency shelter space, some of these children are often transferred to facilities outside Rogers County. When these young children are removed from their homes, they experience trauma, and when you add on being moved outside their familiar territory, it becomes even more traumatic.” TFI’s goal for Rogers County is to secure 20 to 30 more foster homes. “These children should have a safe family home to live in,” he adds. “We are committed to

helping find these families and to also provide a high level of support to them.” TFI Family Connections uses a model of support founded on the principle that foster families deserve a professional, consistent worker of their own dedicated to supporting them as foster parents. “Our foster care family workers are knowledgeable, qualified and caring,” says Cecil. In addition to the support of a dedicated, professional, personal case worker located close to the foster family home, TFI offers 24-hour on-call support, reimbursement payments, local monthly support meetings, free comprehensive, ongoing training, a multimedia resource library, respite services, liability insurance, and independent advocacy to support the foster home and the children being served. TFI also offers annual foster parent retreats, informative monthly newsletters specifically for foster parents, a foster family mentor program, foster parent appreciation events and holiday parties. “Most

importantly,” says Cecil, “we provide the necessary communication and support so that each child and foster family can thrive.” Foster families who “provide love, stability and guidance for a child in need of care will and do change a life for the good,” he adds. “While you or your family may not be able to bring foster children into your home, you may know someone who might be,” says Cecil. “It’s the power of one. If everyone found one foster family, we would have enough to support the

ADVANCED MICRO-NEEDLING THERAPY Automated Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s

repair process results in a thicker dermis with the appearance of softer wrinkles. Eclipse also creates superficial micro-channels which allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin.

Cooking SSomething’s at The Pink House Claremore’s famous restaurant and tearoom offers a one-of-a-kind experience. By Carol Beck-Round

Most people don’t like change, but when Margo Stewart and the staff at Claremore’s famous Pink House decide to shake up the menu with specials or add new items to the regular menu, customers don’t mind a bit. Whether it’s a new entrée or dessert, there’s always something fresh to anticipate at the restaurant, which is located in a Victorian-era house near downtown Claremore’s historic district. Stewart purchased the restaurant and tearoom in 2007 and set about to continue the traditions that make the popular dining place a northeastern Oklahoma destination for those who love not only the tasty made-from-scratch food, but also the cozy atmosphere. Specials are on the menu each day, but now, says Stewart, some of those specials will begin appearing on the menu as regular options. For example, a hefty BLT, often popular with male diners, will become a staple.

“We’re always trying new recipes,” says Stewart. With four quiches, two specialty casseroles, chicken salad and other sandwiches, fresh crisp salads, homemade soups and desserts like baked fudge, there are plenty of choices to satisfy anyone’s palate. After the first of the year, The Pink House staff will begin offering cooking and baking classes, according to Shari Beguin, catering director and Stewart’s daughter. “I will be teaching classes on how to make pie dough and scones. We will be making whole pies during the class, and while our pies are baking, we will have a social time with tea and scones.” Other classes will be offered, depending on the interest generated. “We encourage those who are interested to visit our Facebook page and let us know what classes you would like to see us offer,” she says. Classes will be offered in the evening with prices based on the supplies needed for the project. Customers are also

encouraged to “like” the restaurant on Facebook and check for each day’s specials. “Recently, we offered free half-baked fudge for the day,” says Stewart. Because Stewart is also passionate about getting more people to drink tea, The Pink House offers High Tea,

centering on the serving of freshly brewed tea. Guests can choose from over 50 looseleaf teas. Tea parties are scheduled after hours, beginning at 2 p.m., and are customized to meet the desires of the guests. Lasting two hours, guests can choose from soup, savories like finger sandwiches, mini-quiches, two kinds of scones and dessert, if requested. High Tea is only offered by reservation. “We also offer Little Girl Tea Parties, Tween Parties as well as mother/daughter teas, high school senior teas, church group tea parties and teas to celebrate showers,” she adds. The Pink House is also available for wedding receptions, anniversary

parties and other events after hours, Monday through Saturday only. Events must be booked in advance. Kids’ birthday parties will resume after the first of the year. To schedule an afterhour party, contact Stewart for more information and guidelines. Holidays are also special times at The Pink House, with pumpkin pies and pumpkin cake recently featured during the Thanksgiving holidays. “We also have many specialized cakes and pies for Christmas,” says Stewart. Customers can call and order any of the tasty desserts available at the restaurant. To order a pie, cake or layered dessert like Mississippi Mud dessert, Millionaire pie, Key Lime cake, Strawberry Delight cake, Italian Crème cake, Mandarin Orange cake or any other treat for Christmas, your order must be placed no later than Saturday, December 21. The Pink House is open for lunch Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner is served every Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

soldiers, beggars, lepers, heavenly angels, shepherds, and Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child. The church maintains a costume room with hundreds of costumes made as authentically as possible. Live camels, sheep and donkeys add to the authenticity of the greatest story ever told. Reservations are requested, and large groups are welcome. Admission is free. The Bethlehem Walk attracts thousands of attendees each year from a six-state area. Individuals and groups congregate in the church’s auditorium. Everyone is assigned to a family and a guide who is also the “family head.” Some participants will be given Roman coins with which to pay taxes as they enter Nazareth. You may even be hassled by Roman guards along the road as you march to Bethlehem. You will soon figure out, everyone becomes part of the production. A tax collector receives your family’s taxes,

and your family representative will be asked to “make his mark” in the record book. Don’t try to hold back any coins for yourself – tax collectors can get nasty! Along your route, you will encounter angels with silvery white robes and shepherds kneeling in fields. You will visit three wise men and their camels, and will be asked if you have seen the star in the east. As you enter the bazaar, you will enjoy tasting some of the food samples. The bazaar area houses several shops with baskets, jewelry, fruit and nuts, rugs and more. Half the fun of the evening is interacting with the characters, especially when the shepherds invite you to join them at their camp to enjoy their nice warm fire. As you journey on, you will likely see beggars and lepers. Please don’t touch! To do so is “punishable by death.” You will discover that there are no rooms available in Bethelem. One innkeeper announces that he actually put up a man and his wife with child in a stable down the street. It was the last available vacancy in the city. Near the end of your walk, you will fast-forward 33 years as you encounter three crosses on a hillside and visit the tomb area where the body of Christ the Savior has

gone missing. An angel will appear and read from the scripture. At the conclusion of your walk, you are invited back to Fellowship Hall, where you will visit homes and courtyards of ancient times. Children may make a fabric doll, play games, and pet farm animals, while everyone is welcome to enjoy cider and cookies. The evening is entertaining and educational for all, plus a tremendous outreach to the Tulsa community by Christview Christian Church. The reservation hotline is (918) 232-3587. Operators are on duty from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening, or you may send a text message anytime and an operator will contact you and schedule your time. Give the Gift of Broadway Australian musical troupe The Ten Tenors on Jan. 24, the Oklahoma debut of the new Broadway smash “Bring It On: The Musical” on Feb. 18 and Tony-Award® winning Best Musical “Memphis” on April 22. The three-show ticket pack ranges from $48 to $144 and is available at the BAPAC Box Office located at 701 S. Main St. in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at (918) 259-5778. “Our mission is to bring the world to Broken Arrow, and I think we are doing just that with these three elite Broadway shows,” BAPAC Executive Director Mark Frie said. “It’s been an outstanding fifth anniversary, and we couldn’t have asked for a bet-

ter way to close out the season.” On Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m., The Ten Tenors from all the way Down Under take the BAPAC stage, bringing a mixture of rock and classical music to create a sound that is uniquely theirs. This musical ensemble shot to international fame during a guest spot on Oprah Winfrey and hasn’t stopped since. Amidst incredible international success, this Australian troupe has become known as one of the hardest working touring acts, performing an average of 250 shows per year across seven continents. Continually striving to challenge themselves and their audience, they have sold over 3.5 million concert

tickets, have four gold CDs and two platinum, as well as two gold DVDs and one platinum. “The Ten Tenors respectfully tip their hats to their classical roots and share with audiences unique renditions of the genre’s best love pieces, but they also push the boundaries of what it means to be a tenor and to sit in the classical genre in today’s world,” according to The Ten Tenors website. On Feb.18, the BAPAC theatre will be full of explosive dance and aerial stunts as “Bring It On: The Musical” presents a night sprinkled with sass. Inspired by the 2000 film “Bring It On,” this musical will take the audience on a high-flying journey through

friendship, forgiveness and determination. It tells the story of the challenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill of extreme competition, which is sure to be everything the audience hoped for and nothing like they expected. April 22 brings awardwinning “Memphis” to Broken Arrow from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tenn. A winner of four 2010 Tony-Awards including Best Musical, “Memphis” bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, “Memphis” is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big

Choices for Life Seeking Foster Parents addiction in the household. Indeed, it takes a special type of person to not only consider stepping into such situations, but to commit to helping these children heal and learn how to live a life of normalcy. There are a few basic steps that potential foster parents should expect as they consider working with CFL. Of course, the fundamental qualification is that you have a desire to foster a child and are prepared to begin making up for the lack of quality parenting in the child’s previous situation. Every potential parent goes through a DMV and background check. There is also an income study during the application process. CFL is committed to ensuring that foster homes are focused on providing a healthy environment for these children and that potential parents are not viewing the situation as a means to balancing their household budget. Home inspections, likewise, are an important part of the application process, as CFL is committed to ensuring that children are moving to homes with adequate space and a healthy family environment. Interested parents should not be intimidated by all of this process, though, since CFL provides

plenty of support and training. “We provide rigorous training from the beginning,” says Mr. Thompson. “We also pair new families with mentor families, which we find eases a lot of the expected anxiety early on.” CFL builds on this foundation of support with ongoing training and regular meetings. These large meetings are intended to get families together and help build a social support network. Comprehensive training and support is just one of the many facets of CFL’s unique approach to providing wraparound services for therapeutic foster care. Therapists meet with families in the home at least once per week. The agency provides 24-hour phone support as well. CFL works with schools to ensure appropriate attention and care is considered in the child’s academic environment – crucial in any child’s life. Treatment plans are updated every 90 days, ensuring families, therapists, schools and child are all on the same page and are attentive to the real-time needs of everyone involved. All of this combines to create a foster agency that exceeds standards and expectations and connects children with good homes. If you have found yourself think-

CCelebrate Reason for the Season King of Kings Lutheran Church presents their annual free Live Nativity performances on December 14 and 15.

By Sheryl Sowell

As we gather to decorate Christmas trees and purchase presents for loved ones, King of Kings Lutheran Church calls us all to remember the purpose of the Christmas season. In an effort to carry out this mission to celebrate the birth of Christ, King of Kings will be presenting a Live Nativity scene on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each night.

Complete with costumed actors, sheep, camels, a donkey and a stable, the Live Nativity depicts the story of Christ’s birth from the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary, through the arrival of the three wise men. Pastor Rick Tabisz will narrate the Christmas story while the actors illustrate the journey, conflicts and celebration that the family experiences. At the end of the presentation, audience members are invited

The King of Kings Live Nativity cast.

to sing “Silent Night” and warm up with hot cocoa and cookies as well as pet the animals and visit with the cast. “The Live Nativity is a simple reenactment of the birth of Christ that everyone in the family will enjoy. Several families have told me they make this a part of their Christmas traditions every year,” said Pat Bartley, cochair of the public relations committee. “When we all sing together at the end of the performance, it creates a truly beautiful, peaceful feeling within.” The presentation itself will last for approximately 40 minutes, and it is performed regardless of the plunging temperatures. Seating is provided, but Bartley urges spectators, “Please dress appropriately and bring blankets. The metal bleachers are very cold.” The Live Nativity takes place on 13 acres located on the southeast side of Highway 75 and 151st Street in Glenpool. Please arrive early to find seating. Porta-Potties will also be available.

This is the seventh year that King of Kings Lutheran Church has put on a Live Nativity. “We are a missionary church,” Bartley says. “This is our small way of sharing Christ’s love with the community.” King of Kings is a small church with a congregation of just over 100 members; the church begins setting up committees in the early fall to prepare for the event. Whether participants are actors or supervising parking, every member plays a vital role in the Live Nativity. “It takes us all,” Bartley says. “Our goal is to capture the wonder of our Savior’s birth. It isn’t about commercialization; it is about the simplicity and the joy of the occasion.” This project is free to the community, and is a relatively large endeavor for such a small church. Funding comes from both the congregation and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, an organization that does much more than offer financial services. They also offer outreach opportunities that enable

members to help their communities and congregations. “The entire presentation is a testament to the season. The volunteerism that it requires is truly indicative of the Christmas spirit,” says Bartley. King of Kings is a mission church that provides outreach to the community in a variety of other ways as well, including the Mercy Mission II Food Pantry and the Good Samaritan Mobile Medical Ministry, available on the first and third Fridays of each month. The food pantry and mobile medical ministry are held at Extreme Worship in Glenpool. The church will also have a float in the Glenpool Christmas Parade and the Tulsa Hills Christmas Parade, both on December 7.

FFeast on Cajun Cuisine

Want something delicious, flavorful and a little different for your holiday meals? Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats has you covered.

By Deanna Rebro

Every Cajun meal is a celebration in itself. And there’s only one place in Tulsa to get the best Cajun food made by real Cajuns – that’s Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats at 2101 E. 71st St. “Cajun Ed” Richard never planned on owning a meat market, much less a restaurant. His grandfather owned several restaurants and a catering company in Lafayette, Louisiana,

and he worked there in high school. He left Lafeyette after college to work for an office product company and made Tulsa his family’s home. Over the years, Cajun Ed thought more and more about getting into the food business. “It was just in the blood. My family was involved in it. I’ve always cooked, just not professionally, but I always wanted to.”

“Cajun Ed” Richard with the world-famous turducken.

In 1998, the original market opened at 81st and Lewis. Ed’s idea was to make products under Federal USDA inspection and legally ship them all over the United States. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s is one of only two federally inspected facilities in Tulsa and has a full time inspector on site daily overseeing production. The production facility in the back of the restaurant produces a wide range of products, including nearly 50 varieties of sausages, gumbo, maque choux, and etouffee. Eighteen varieties of stuffing can be ordered inside a large selection of meats, including the turducken (a chicken stuffed inside a duck, stuffed inside a turkey). You can stop by for your favorite cuts of beef and pork, rabbit, crawfish (seasonally), alligator, chicken, game hens, oysters and quail. The largest Cajun market in Tulsa offers many retail items from all over Louisiana. Cajun Ed says many Louisiana natives come in to pick up products from “home” that they can’t find anywhere else. When the current location opened six years ago, they added a cafeteria-style lunch

service that features live music daily. Two years ago they began seated dinner service. A rotating list of specials is offered each day of the week. One of Ed’s favorites is “Cajun-Mex Tuesday,” with red bean burritos, a variety of Cajun tacos, and his grandfather’s crawfish tamales. The tamales are a longtime family favorite from the catering service and were nearly lost after “Paw Paw” passed. When they could not decipher the bits and pieces of the recipe scribbled down on a scrap of paper, the family decided to get together to try to recreate it. “My wife loved the tamales. They were her favorite thing to eat in the world, so she helped us recreate it. I had parts of the recipe from my cousin, whose brother used to make them for the catering company. My brother in Florida came to town and for a week we got together and made tamales. We’d make a batch and give them to my wife, and she’d tell us ‘that wasn’t it,’ so we’d make another batch and she’d say no. I don’t know how many batches we made, but finally she said we got it right. And we all knew when we tasted them – they were super good.”

Paw Paw’s tamales are served open faced with crawfish etouffee and homemade pico. Cajun Ed is pleased to introduce the creations of his new chef, Aubrey Brune. The OSU Culinary Arts graduate has nearly 20 years of experience in various restaurants, but Cajun food is his new passion. “Aubrey adds his special touch to make some of the best food we have ever offered,” says Cajun Ed. This year you can choose your favorite from three types of cornbread dressing. Christmas morning in Louisiana means beignets are in the kitchen. Cajun Ed’s has the beignet mix and chickory coffee to go with it, or beignets and café au lait are offered from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. Place your holiday order online at www.cajuned.com or stop by the big red house just west of 71st and Lewis. For more information, contact

The Tulsa Downtown Parade of Lights – celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah and other holidays – is proud to announce movie and television star Samantha (Sami) Isler as the Grand Marshal for the 2013 Parade. Samantha is currently starring in the NBC sitcom “Sean Saves the World,” which debuted on October 3, 2013. Her co-stars are Sean Hayes (“Will and Grace”) and Linda Lavin (“Alice”) and Megan Hilty (“Smash”). Samantha Isler first made her mark with NBC in 2009 as a kid reporter. She recently completed filming the gothic thriller/dark comedy “Dig Two Graves” with Ted Levine, and she was also in the April 2013 release “Home Run.” Sami is a native Oklahoman, born in Tulsa on October 26, 1998. She had just graduated from the 8th grade at Monte Cassino when Hollywood called. The 2013 Parade of Lights will take place on

Saturday, December 14 beginning at 6 p.m. The route begins at 4th and Elgin, travels west on 4th to Boulder, north on Boulder to 1st, then east on 1st to finish at Elgin in the Blue Dome District. This is the 78th year for a holiday parade in downtown Tulsa. “The Parade had thousands of spectators lining the streets last year, and this year will be even bigger and better,” said Larry Fox, Parade Chairman. “It is going to be an unbelievable year of talent and entertainment for the Parade of Lights. We are very pleased to have Sami as our Grand Marshal. Once we heard about her and the show, we knew we had to have her!” The Parade of Lights invites everyone to come enjoy the 60+ floats, balloons, dance groups, collegiate and professional sports teams, beauty pageant winners and so much more. The Guthrie Green will

be hosting the Downtown Parade of Lights After Party on December 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. Float awards for this year's parade will be announced by Grand Marshal Samantha Isler. The party will have live entertainment, a concert by Star Fisher, food trucks lining the park, and arts and crafts vendors under the north dock at the Holiday Sale. Activities for kids will include meeting Santa, pony rides, and fireworks visible from the park. This year’s fireworks will be a joint contribution between the Downtown Parade of Lights and WinterFest. The Parade will be televised again this year by KTUL Channel 8.
