New Year’s Resolutions…sigh… Lots of folks make New Year’s Resolutions and then wonder why they didn’t work. Newsflash…They don’t work because you don’t follow through. Most of the time folks don’t follow through because they really didn’t have a true desire to do them in the first place, or maybe they want the outcomes but are not really committed to the sacrifice it takes to accomplish the results. The first step to making a successful goal is to look at what you REALLY want. In our very fast food, in and out, want it now way of life, it is natural to want to achieve some shortterm, “feel good” reward for the work that you do. I suggest setting some of these “feel good” goals along with the long-term ones that you want to achieve. Here are some suggestions for a balanced approach: • Create your Life Bucket List. This should include all the things that you would like to do before you “kick the bucket,” so to speak. Write them down. Examples of this would be

“things” you want to buy, “experiences” you would like to have, “goals” that you would like to accomplish both now and later in your life. Hopefully this will be a LONG list. After you have created this list, break it down into short, medium, and longterm goals. Then, sort your list by the ones that matter most to you in each category. I usually hear some pretty common themes when I talk to clients about their bucket list. Some of the things on many folks’ shortterm list involve houses, recreational vehicles and vacations. On their long-term lists, I usually see something about retiring comfortably. • Once you have prioritized your list by “when” and “importance to you,” make a detailed, measurable goal for this year about how to begin to attain
that goal. Sometimes in the beginning, it’s about paying down debt or making a specific goal of saving to achieve your overall goal. Most of the time, the goal is not achievable in a single year. You should keep your list somewhere that you will see it on a weekly basis. Review it for progress at the end of each month when you pay your bills. You are in this for the long haul. Don’t get discouraged. Stay the course. Your life bucket list is a changing, living document. It is not written in stone and it’s okay to occasionally change some of your ideas. However, be mindful of the changes that you make and why. To help you stay on track, choose a really good financial advisor. Stop Snoring and Save Your Health Sleep apnea not only causes snoring, but can have serious health consequences – it has been implicated in hypertension and cardiovascular disease. By Steve White, D.D.S At White Smile Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we would like to alert everyone to a condition that is a major health concern: sleep apnea. We treat sleep apnea with fitted appliances. The public has become more aware of the disorder because research has disclosed its devastating consequences. It has been implicated in hypertension and cardiovascular disease, leading to strokes and heart attacks. These, in turn, lead to increased susceptibility to diseases that include sexual dysfunction, compromised immune systems, learning and memory loss, irritability, and mental and emotional health issues. Apnea occurs because the body is unable to obtain sufficient amounts of oxygen during sleep. The patient is essentially startled awake gasping for air. We fit patients with oval appliances that open the airway and allow for a healthy night’s sleep. Snoring, choking or gasping for air throughout the night will be eliminated. I recommend sleep studies administered by a physician to determine the severity of the problem, with a diagnosis and recommended treatment. In severe cases, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines are recommended. Because some patients cannot tolerate sleeping with a mask, the appliance is an option. Woody Guthrie W Center Growing Ronald D. Cohen donates more than 500 books and collectibles to Woody Guthrie Center Archives. By Todd Cunningham
Folk music author and academic Ronald D. Cohen recently donated his personal collection including over 500 books related to the folk music genre, Woody Guthrie, and his contemporaries to the Woody Guthrie Center. The books will be added to the WGC research library for academics to access. In addition, the collection includes multiple boxes of collectible material and rare items that will be housed in the Center vault beside the Woody Guthrie Archives and Phil Ochs Archives. The items include, among numerous other rare items, one of Pete Seeger’s very first mimeographed, self-published banjo instruction booklets (there were only 100 printed in 1948), along with Seeger’s freshman yearbook from his early years at Harvard, which also pictures his classmate, a young John F. Kennedy. “We are honored to be the caretakers of this special collection of items that will be added to the archives of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs, and we look

a band and managing it. During the program, students will take part in a variety of activities including songwriting, instrument and vocal lessons, band management, and learning to work together as a band. They will then be given the opportunity to create a song from start to finish including recording a polished version and filming a music video for it. Participants will also learn music and cultural history by exploring the work and music of Woody Guthrie and tracking his influence to some of their favorite artists of today. At the end of the program, the musicians will perform at a local venue and put into practice what they have learned. They will be in charge of promoting their performance using social media, distributing fliers, and using other grass-roots efforts. The program meets every Friday, 4:30 to 6 p.m., and runs through mid-May. The cost is $50 in January and $80 per month thereafter with scholarships available and a 10% discount for members. So far, dozens of chefs have registered for the event and will prepare their delicious soul food cuisine for thousands of attendees to enjoy. “The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off is the perfect venue to celebrate the rich African American heritage of soul food,” says Cassandra Gaines, event creator and marketing director of the Muskogee Civic Center. “Soul food is simply comfort food made from scratch – sweet potato pie, smothered chicken and rice, smothered pork chops, homemade macaroni and cheese, greens, hot water corn bread, candied yams, peach cobbler. We bring together a diverse community of people who enjoy the tradition of enjoying good food together and having fun.” One of Cassandra’s responsibilities as marketing

Tony Sementi, owner of Tile by Tony, offers customers tips on choosing the right contractor for your home project. By Jim Butcher With nearly 35 years of experience in remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, Tony Sementi, who owns and operates Tile by Tony in Catoosa, emphasizes, “We do things differently than most contractors.” And as a result, he has developed a “Seven-Point Guide” on How to Pick a Contractor for this type of project. 1. Scope of work. Knowing exactly what you want done will help generate a detailed, accurate and less expensive bid. Be consistent and give identical information to all bidders. He suggests, share your budget with the contractor prior to the bid and consider doing the job in stages, if the estimate is too high. 2. Ownership oversight. Are you prepared to stay home to oversee the job, chase down materials, clean up job sites, and accept less than high-quality work? Then the low bidder will probably work for you. Do you want to feel completely safe leaving your family and belongings at home while you’re at work? Then be prepared to hire a professional. “Remember, as with most things in life, you get what
you pay for,” said Sementi. “I don’t want my customers and any member of their families to be scared. I want you to have peace of mind when my men are working in your homes,” he said. Tenure of his 15 employees range from the newest of seven years to one he hired in 1991. 3. Know the difference between an amateur and a professional. You immediately know a
professional. They are on time to meetings or will communicate with you about any delay in meeting you, Sementi said. “They will be very knowledgeable on all aspects of a project. A professional will rarely throw out numbers; a professional’s bid will be very detailed, with scope of work and the cost of each item. This protects both parties. If it is not itemized, it’s not included.”
4. Get references. The Better Business Bureau, the Home Builder’s Association, and online sites like Angie’s List are also a good place to start, he continued. “Listen to your gut, it usually knows. Ask for recent references. Even a lousy contractor has had a good job or two,” he adds. To be on the safe side, check them out! And don’t overlook the obvious. Has the contractor done this

kind of work before? For example, hiring a contractor who does excellent backsplash work does not mean that he can remodel a shower. 5. Communication is a biggie. “Without good communication between you and your contractor, the job will fail to meet your expectations,” Sementi said. “Communication is to construction like location is to real estate.” 6. Magnetic sign on a truck or brick and mortar? Though not a guarantee of quality, brick and mortar will show that he has a commitment to the community. 7. Verify your contractor’s workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. Most homeowners fail to check these basic things. Your homeowner’s insurance will not cover you if someone gets hurt on your job. You could lose your home. Sementi said, most people prefer to hire one company for the entire project; this helps both the homeowner and the contractor in completing the project on time and reducing expense.
