Technology is improving every day. Today’s computers are quickly leaving yesterday’s systems in the past – or in your closet, basement or attic. Dell and Goodwill Industries of Tulsa continue their partnership to Reconnect, a nocharge computer recycling program for consumers. The program is intended to raise awareness of the importance of responsible computer disposal and give residents a free and convenient way to do the right thing with their unwanted home computer equipment. “We offer this service to the community so that everyone is able to recycle their old computers in an environmentally friendly way,” says Nancy Webster, Director of Community Relations for Goodwill Industries of

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

The Retirement Red Zone BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

replace your income in retirement. Your playbook should include multiple investment strategies to both defend against losses and advance toward your goals.

It’s that time of year again. Friday night lights, Saturday game day tailgate parties, the cooler days of fall, and the leaves changing colors. I love this time of year. It is our family’s favorite. With football starting and hunting season just around the corner, life is full of hope and promise. Just as it requires preparation to get ready to play in that big game or harvest that big buck, so too it takes preparation when planning for that “big day” of retirement. The last few years preceding retirement and the first few years immediately following retirement is what we call “the retirement red zone.” The reason we call it the red zone is because these years are most crucial to the outcome of your financial retirement success. It’s just like in football where the red zone is the last 20 yards before crossing the goal and

is critical to winning or defeat, the last few years before and after your retirement can make you or break you. It’s during this time that you need to develop a careful, drawn-out strategic plan….a GAME PLAN. Your playbook should be detailed with all the x’s and o’s and provide a careful strategy for how much you need to have saved, what debt you need to have paid off, what your budget is now and what it will be, and a specific plan for how to

These years often require sacrifice in order to meet the goal line, and a great coach to help get you there. We want to help you make your retirement a winning success! Give us to call to discuss your winning strategies today. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. Although adjustments are generally completed in two to three months, you must continue wearing the appliance in order to remain symptom-free and safe from relapse. Most cases resolve easily and result in far fewer headaches and earaches and less jaw popping and joint pain. “Results are usually life changing,” says Dr. White. Dr. White treats sleep apnea with fitted appliances. The public has become more aware of the disorder because research has disclosed its devastating consequences. It has been implicated in hypertension and cardiovascular disease, leading to strokes and heart attacks. These in turn lead to increased susceptibility to diseases that include compromised immune systems, learning and memory loss, irritability, sexual dysfunction, and mental and emotional health issues. Apnea occurs because the body is unable to obtain sufficient amounts of oxygen during sleep. The patient is essentially startled awake gasping for air. Dr. White fits patients with appliances that open the airway and allow for a healthy night’s sleep. “Snoring, choking or gasping for air throughout the night will be eliminated,” said Dr. White. He recommends sleep studies administered by a physician to determine the severity of the problem, with a diagnosis and recommended treatment. In severe cases, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines are

Page 5

recommended. “Because some patients cannot tolerate sleeping with a mask, the appliance is an option. These devices are also fitted to help eliminate snoring. Medical insurance benefits are usually available when sleep studies have been conducted.” Dr. White and the White Cosmetic & Family Dentistry team report that they have had a tremendous response to their QDP (Quality Dental Plan) program, which is a low-cost alternative to expensive dental insurance. “Our QDP offers a way for patients to receive full routine exams and cleanings, plus reduced fees for all services, with none of the common hassles encountered with dental insurance,” said Dr. White. “Because insurance companies aren’t making profits by limiting or denying services, the dentist and consumer save time and money. No third party.” Dr. White adds that the plan could save you thousands on dental treatment and eliminate costly insurance premiums, which puts money back in your pocket.

Achieve the Dream of Home Ownership The Rock Church will present a free Home Buyers Seminar for the community on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. By Deanna Rebro

Seminar on Thursday, September 25 at the church business office, 2017 S. Elm Pl., Ste. 104. in Broken Arrow. The seminar is free of charge and open to the public. Whether you are buying for the first time, upgrading, downsizing or investing, the Home Buyers Seminar offers allinclusive and up-to-date information to help all types of buyers feel comfortable and confident about every aspect of the home buying process. The Rock Church Pastor Billy Joe Watts strives to help people achieve the American dream of Pastors Billy home ownership.

For most people, a home is the largest investment they will ever make. Still, they often begin the home buying process with little or no knowledge, and typically

feel anxious and afraid of what lies ahead. It doesn’t have to be that way. The Rock Church is happy to present a Home Buyers

broken arrow

Joe and Theresa Watts, also real estate professionals, understand the dilemmas that home buyers face – in particular, first time buyers. “I’d say 90 percent of first time buyers are concerned about issues in their credit history,” says Pastor Billy Joe. They may be afraid to apply for a home loan or perhaps have been turned down because of outstanding bills, bankruptcy, alimony or child support issues. The Home Buyers Seminar will educate these potential buyers on how they, too, can become creditworthy and prepare themselves for a home loan approval. Janelle Ligons, a mortgage broker with Supreme Lending, will walk seminar attendees through the process step by step. In some instances, she will be able to show buyers what they need to do in their particular circumstances so that in three months, six months or whatever timeframe, they will qualify for a loan that meets their needs. Most people have heard of conventional, FHA and VA loans. But numerous other home loan programs are also available. There are Native American loans for tribal registrants and rehab loans for the purchase of older homes and their energy-efficient upgrades. There are many other possibilities as well. “I ask renters why they pay somebody else’s mortgage when they could be paying their own,” says Pastor Theresa. Most of the time they don’t realize all that they can do. “Take the first step to make it happen,” she urges.

Page 7

The right tools and resources are available from the right people to get you on your way to responsible home ownership. The two pastors say they have heard numerous tales of unscrupulous practices. As part of The Rock Church’s mission of “serving God and loving people,” they offer an educational service based on honesty, integrity and genuinely caring about the people who are led their way. They are also pleased to be associated with Chinowth & Cohen for nine of the 10 years of the company’s history of impeccable business practices and community service. Pastor Billy Joe says they feel the joy of loving God and helping people each time they see the glow of new home owners when the keys and garage remotes are presented to them. The Home Buyers Seminar begins at 7:00 p.m. No reservations are needed. If you’re in the market for a starter home or luxury dream home now or in the near future, come. You’re sure to walk away with practical and valuable information to help you make the best possible home buying decisions.

Kick M Your Fears Chris Velez, owner of Martial Arts Academy, says that many worries about beginning martial arts can be easily overcome. By Lorrie Ward

Martial arts has been in existence since ancient times, but in the world of modern day sports training, this training is relatively young. As the discipline changes and grows, more people of all ages are expressing an interest in becoming involved. But according to Chris Velez of Martial Arts Academy, there are a few common worries that cause people to hesitate before that first step of signing up for classes. One reason that people give is: “I need to get in shape first.” According to Velez, beginner classes at Martial Arts Academy are designed for people with no experience, a zero fitness level, and zero muscle memory. The exercises in these classes place emphasis on gross motor skills and big muscle movements. “Physical fitness comes from repetition in a really short amount of time,” says Velez. “After only a handful of classes, many of our students have done 90 kicks.” Another reason Velez often hears is: “I’m self-conscious.”

People who give this reason often shy away from new things, and Velez notes that this could be good practice for someone to step outside his or her comfort zone. “We stair step the experience and keep the classes bigger –the bigger the class, the better the experience,” he says. “It helps reduce stress and anxiety levels while still helping the student work in a pressure situation that

becomes easier as they advance.” Some people feel they don’t have enough time to devote to following the steps toward a black belt, but Velez explains that consistently working toward the goal is much more important than committing huge amounts of time per week to that goal. “Anything consistent is more important than frequency, because consistency allows students to progress – even 15 minutes outside their one-day-a-week class is more than enough for a student to progress,” Velez says. “All black belts have had challenging times where they’ve missed a few

www.ValueNews.com weeks and had to come back. You make the commitment knowing that some weeks will be better than others.” Even if they are not strapped for time, some people feel they are just not coordinated enough to learn martial arts. They may feel they need to be naturally athletic or talented to participate. But Velez explains that many of the best students at Martial Arts Academy started because they saw their kids out on the floor and wanted to join in. “A lot of the lesser gifted people stick with it because they are used to having to work

for it,” he says. That’s also why instructors like to get parents involved, so that they teach their children not to rely so much on talent, but instead to focus on hard work. “If parents help us set the goal, they help us work through it.” All classes (with the exception of street defense) feature people of all ages, and Velez points out that this is great when working with the kids, as having the parents and adults involved helps in keeping the kids focused. “And the adults have to be on their best behavior because they want to provide a good example for kids to model their behavior after.” So don’t let your fears stop you from stepping into the world of martial arts! With ages as young as 4 and as seasoned as 60+, classes at Martial Arts Academy provide discipline and physical fitness for the whole family.

Check Out Local Food and Products The Rose District Farmers Market is a fun way to spend Saturday morning, featuring Oklahoma foods, products and entertainment.

By Duane Blankenship The Rose District Farmers Market in Broken Arrow is located on South Main Street. Farmers Market Coordinator Judy Prieto has done a remarkable job adding vendors to the event, open each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The market includes a Kids Corner, live music, and a wide variety of food vendors. October 4 will be this year’s last Farmers Market date. The Kids Corner is presented from 9 to 11 a.m. by local non-profit organizations. Vendors must abide by the guidelines of ODAFF (Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Food and Forestry). Contact Judy for guidelines or to receive a vendor application. I recently visited the Rose District Farmers Market and selected three vendors to feature. The following is a short reflection of each and the

products they bring to the market. Frontier Gardens is owned by David and Linda Hickey of Broken Arrow. David is a walking pepper encyclopedia. He and Linda produce 17 varieties ranging from super hot to no heat. Cultivator Ed Currie’s “Carolina Reaper” currently holds the record for being the world’s hottest pepper. “They look like the tail of a scorpion and are fire-engine red with a punch of heat nearly as potent as police pepper sprays,” said David. To put it into perspective, the Reaper registers 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units, while police pepper spray is about 2 million. Jalapeños typically register about 5,000 units. A few of David and Linda’s peppers include the Thai, Jalapeño, Georgia Flame, Hot Portugal and Ghost. They also grow garlic and raise 30 varieties of tomatoes. At the Natural Farms booth, I found Ethan Eakin, a contractor for owners Jeff and Chris Emmerson. The booth features a school bus transformed into “The Farminator,” which is loaded with quality free-range meats. Ethan raises free-range Italian Piedmontiese cattle, a breed that is naturally lean and tender. They are given no antibiotics and no hormones. He also raises vegetables and says, “My weed control is a hoe and a rake, and that’s what I do each week.” Concerning insect control, Ethan replied, “God has produced a natural balance between plants and insects where insects usually attack only diseased plants. That leaves the healthy vegetables for our consumption.” Ethan has an environmental sustainability degree from ORU. Dana Prieto is a licensed Animal Nuisance Control Opera-

tor. Dana’s clients primarily raise free-range chickens, ducks and goats. “Coyotes, bobcats, raccoons and skunks don’t mix well with free-range enterprises,” he said. Dana is asked to trap predators when they are decimating farm animals. He also traps beavers for damage control. It greatly affects a farmer’s livelihood when livestock are killed by a wild animal. Farmers can easily lose 10 chickens or a few goats in one night to predators. Even when kept in barns, wild animals manage to get them. “Harvesting animals is a necessary link in the chain of life. While the animal must be taken, there is no waste. The whole animal is used for other purposes,” says Dana. “I only trap in winter, when predators are healthy and their furs are full.” Youngsters visiting Dana’s booth are amazed at how soft the furs are. In addition, Dana’s grandson, Noah, sells all-natural egg shell tub scrub and other products he and his mother make. A child may be a vendor if accompanied by an adult 18 or older and in compliance with the regulations. The Rose District Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

HHelping You Create the Retirement of Your Dreams Melanie Hasty-Grant of Waterstone Private Wealth Management offers soon-to-be retirees tips on planning life after retirement. By Melanie Hasty-Grant

My retirees aren’t sitting around in their rocking chairs! The retirement bucket lists of today are full of the hopes and dreams that have finally come to fruition. Through sacrificing, saving, and careful planning and investing these folks have reached their goals and are reaping the benefits. From restoring old cars and Cushmans, to living at the lake, traveling to dreamt-about locations like Alaska and Canada, picnicking with grandchildren, loving on pets who are like children, judging rodeos, starting their own businesses, going to bowl games, and moving to really cool golfing and retirement communities, they are busier than ever checking off that bucket list. In fact, most of the time when I call them about scheduling a meeting to go over their investments, it is difficult for them to find time. They often tell me, “I’m not sure how I ever found time to work.” Nothing makes me happier than seeing them get to do what we had planned for over the last years of their work life. They deserve it. But, this whole retiring thing is not easy sometimes. It is definitely a process! Of course, the primary goal that I assist clients with at this point in my career is the money goal. We do a complete financial assessment. One of the biggest questions that pre-retirees have is, “Will I have enough money to last throughout my

retirement?” Working with a trusted financial professional can help you to determine if the savings you have will be enough or if you need to be saving more. It matters who you trust and who you work with. This is usually a lifetime relationship, and it needs to be with someone that you work well with and that will spend the time needed to make your financial life successful. During the planning phase, we help clients create a debt reduction plan, a retirement savings plan, and an income plan to replace their salary. However, in addition to adjustments and planning regarding your money, there are also other psychological and emotional challenges. This is where the counselor in me takes over. One of the issues soon-to-be retirees face is redefining their identity. Who am I if not for my job title or company position? Developing a “you are more than what you do” attitude helps to make this change. Think of how you might transfer skills of your current job into hobbies, volunteerism, or a part-time job. Another common but related issue is finding a purpose for your life. It’s important to not just be retiring from something, but also to something. One idea to help you develop a new purpose is to develop a bucket list of 100 things or more you would like to do during your retirement. New goals and dreams are important during this time to provide purpose and stability of identity. Develop a sense for how you will create meaning in your life.

Think about how you want to spend your time. There is a lot more freedom of time when retired. Retirees often fantasize about having so much free time to do hobbies, etc. Initially, the fantasy becomes reality and it feels exactly as they had envisioned. They are golfing or fishing every day and having a great time. However, eventually having a routine helps to normalize the transition. We encourage clients to start “practicing” being retired. Start doing some of the things on a daily basis that you plan to do in retirement. Finally, be proactive about potential changes in relationships. Often there are changes in relationships between spouses, children, and grandchildren. For spouses, often spending 24/7 together is more than challenging. If one spouse has always been at home, there can be “turf wars” about who is in charge of what. Also, not having the social time with co-workers in the break room is a change. If you are used to having a lot of your social interaction needs met at work, then this can be difficult. We encourage clients to be proactive in addressing changes in relationships and expectations. I hope you find this information helpful in preparing for this wonderful time in your life. Black & White: A Night at the Museum exhibit. “Attendees are encouraged to dress in black and white business casual attire for the evening,” said Ms. Lewis. Exclusive food and beverage sponsor for the event is Main Street Tavern and The Rooftop. Musical entertainment will be provided by Michael Rappe and Suzanne Barns with easylistening selections, and Chad Meier on acoustic guitar. Over 30 items from local businesses will be featured in

a silent auction, including a weekend retreat in Arkansas and a meal to be prepared by local firefighters. These guys can really cook. A dinner for four with Dr. Clarence Oliver, retired superintendant of Broken Arrow Schools and renowned Broken Arrow historian, will also be auctioned. Tickets for Night at the Museum are only $25 for Broken Arrow Historical Society members and $30 for non-members. You may pay

for tickets by credit card when you call the museum office. Your tickets will be held for you until the evening of the event, or you may have them mailed to you. If you are interested in being a sponsor or silent auction participant in this year’s event or in future events, please contact Lori Lewis. Money raised through Night at the Museum helps support the preservation of Broken Arrow’s rich history. “Preserving our artifacts and

photographs allows us to provide additional programming and exhibits for children, area residents and visitors from around our state and country to enjoy for years to come.” Call to reserve your tickets now and put September 13 on your calendar. Night at the Museum is a great way to support your community and the Historical Society as they venture to collect more relics and information about Broken Arrow’s exciting history.

Feel Welcome When You Pull in the Drive been in business for at least one year. Never pay for work in advance. You might wake up and find that your contractor has “left Dodge” and cannot be reached. Get a written quote listing exactly what work will be done, a materials list with specifications and how long it will take to complete the project. This is your insurance that acceptable quality and standards are met. It’s also good to check to see that the

A reputable concrete contractor will mention the word “rebar” without your having to ask because steel reinforcement rebar is critical to the driveway’s fabrication. Without rebar, the driveway’s life could be reduced by many years. Ask for references for completed projects that were similar to yours. Visit sites to

Party with a Purpose to Help Rescued Animals The Parrot Head Pirates’ Party-Ball on September 20 will benefit the Pet Adoption League.

By Deanna Rebro

For one evening, Parrot Heads will become pirates for the benefit of Pet Adoption League. On Saturday, September 20, the Tulsa Parrot Head Club will present its first ever Pirates’ Party-Ball at Tulsa RV Ranch. Known worldwide as Jimmy Buffett’s most avid fans, the Parrot Heads are also active with local community, educational and environmental concerns. The nonprofit organization raises money for charity and people in need. And they always have fun doing it. “We party with a purpose,” says event chair Jeanette North. The Pet Adoption League, a Tulsa animal rescue organization, was chosen for this inaugural benefit. Since 1998, PAL has been rescuing dogs and cats and finding homes in which the animals will be loved and cared for the rest of their lives. The all-volunteer organization has no paid employees and no facility of its own. Every cent received goes toward the care of the animals (vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and other medical care) that are either in foster homes or boarded at a veterinary clinic.

The animals remain with PAL until the right home is found for them, no matter how long it takes. In some cases the wait has been several years, according to PAL President Sherri Hardy. Adoption fees partially offset expenses, but the organization must rely primarily on donations to care for rescued animals that otherwise would have gone to local shelters. In July, PAL rescued six dogs and a kitten from the Okemah Animal Shelter and played an instrumental role in establishing governmental policy that transformed the shelter from a closed capture-and-kill facility to an open adoption shelter. “We are so honored to have the Parrot Heads work on our behalf,” says Sherri. “They are a great group of people who work really hard to support a worthy cause, and they all have big hearts for animals.” The Pirates’ Party-Ball will take place the day after the international “Talk Like A Pirate Day,” when pirate enthusiasts around the globe set aside their everyday vocabularies to speak like they just stepped off a pirate ship. Live music will be provided by Something Steel. The band

that has drawn a record crowd at Utica Square Summer’s Fifth Night concerts and is featured at Driller’s Stadium for the annual Margaritaville Night create island sounds blended with steel drums,

guitar and percussion. Of course, everyone’s favorite Jimmy Buffett tunes will be on their playlist. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 11 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best pirate cos-

tume, the best “Talk Like A Pirate” and the best moves on the dance floor. A silent auction and donation auction will also take place, as well as the opportunity to vote select PAL animals out of a very special “jail.” Tickets are $50 per person and $35 for Parrot Head members and Pet Adoption League volunteers. Each ticket includes open slider burger bar with all the trimmings and two free pirate punches. A cash bar is available. Tickets can be purchased through PayPal and online at www.tulsaparrotheads.com. The Tulsa RV Ranch is a short drive from downtown Tulsa on Highway 75 South, at 2538 Hwy. 75 in Beggs. Anyone who wants overnight accommodations can call the ranch at (918) 267-9000. Sponsorships, beginning at $100, are still available. Early Gold Coin Sponsors are Tulsa RV Ranch and Fat Guy’s Burgers. Early Bronze Coin Sponsors are Sav-On Printing and Sunset Plumbing Inc. Silver Coin Sponsorships (over $500) are available. “Come join a conga line. Meet new friends. Most importantly, have a great time for a great purpose,” says Jeanette. For more information, call Jeanette North at (918) 902-1154.

the fibers disrupts communications in the central nervous system. This produces a wide range of symptoms in the body, such as slurred speech, blurred vision, trembling and weakness, numbness or tingling in limbs. While some breakthroughs have been made, an outright cause or cure for MS remains elusive. Currently, the scientific community points to a combination of genetic and environmental factors as a likely cause. Research has shown that cases of MS occur more frequently in northern countries, implying a connection between the amount of sunlight (and vitamin D) individuals are exposed to. Scientists also believe that genetic predisposition may be a factor, too, in causing MS. Working hypotheses regarding cause aside, the strides made in gaining an understanding really only scratch the surface; more

research is needed. For example, the NMSS is funding a study in Australia to specifically focus on the relationship between the disease and sunlight exposure. And even though the National MS Society “funds more multiple sclerosis research and provides more programs for people with MS and their families than any other voluntary health organization in the world,” according to the National Health Council, it doesn’t happen without participation and support. Bike MS is the society’s most popular event, and takes place in every state, every year. In Oklahoma, bicyclists pedal along 150 miles of Route 66 on September 20 and 21. Presented by Sam’s Club, The Mother Rode Ride begins and ends in Chandler at the Lincoln County Agri-Civic Center, located at 1179 W. 15th St. Registration is $50 per rider.
