ong before Main Street gave way to the thriving community now known as the Rose District, magic was happening for generations in a little shop located at 120 South Main in Broken Arrow. Great endeavors have been planned and discussed in whispered voices within the four walls. Many an engagement plot has been solidified and anniversary plans hatched as guests open their hearts and share their dreams with the skilled staff at Star Jewelers located at 120 South Main Street. For owner Dayna Matheny Christ, walking into the store for work each morning is a bit like crossing the threshold of the wardrobe into Narnia. “It really is a magical place for me,” she says. Opened in 1973, Star Jewelers has been a family-owned business for three generations. First opened by her grandparents, Dayna has owned the store for 12 years. Her father has been the in-house master jeweler for over 40 years. The longevity of the jewelers has earned the family a well-deserved reputation in the Broken Arrow community. Customers know jewelry items are hand selected by staff, repairs are completed in-house, pieces are personalized, and the store has something for every budget. Unlike bigger, more commercial jewelry stores, Dayna and her family and staff never opt for cookie-cutter options. Unique pieces can be found throughout the store, each guest is treated like an old friend. Each visitor comes in with a unique story, whether purchasing for a wedding, an anniversary, a graduation gift, or just for fun, the staff knows each story deserves a piece of jewelry with a story to match. “That is where the magic is, we get to help people find the perfect piece of jewelry to bring the magic to their lives,” Dayna says. Every piece of jewelry in the store is her favorite because every piece has a story to tell and every story

In-house Jeweler, Hank Matheny, and store owner Dayna Matheny Christ are the dad and daughter duo. She helps customers design their dream jewelry and he creates it. They stand at the showroom entrance with a smile, ready to greet new and old customers as they enter Star Jewelers this holiday season.

has a customer, brimming with excitement and wonder as they leave the store with a new purchase or a repaired family treasure. Dayna describes one such experience, “One of our customers who was young when she married was shopping for a larger stone for her wedding ring. After talking about various options, she decided to redesign her wedding ring using family diamonds from her mothers, grandmothers and aunts rings. It was exciting because she was a third generation Star customer as I am a third generation Star owner. It gave me goose bumps to see her face and appreciation for her newly designed ring. All of this magic, as Dayna calls it, makes for a very personal shopping experience which customers love, but it is the reputation of integrity in the community the family values most. Just as the company is now owned by the third generation, many customers are also third generation customers. As Dayna and her father and grandmother work together, new customers come in with stories of their parents and grandparents shopping at the store. Generational customers know and trust the store because they know and trust the family behind the store. Broken Arrow residents have entrusted their most precious possessions into the skilled hands of the master jeweler for repairs. Having such an established relationship in the community has helped the store become even more of a destination place since the revitalization of the Rose District. As the family business has grown, so has the shops investment in the surrounding community. Whether through toy drives or helping with Broken Arrow Neighbors, they are always finding ways to share the joy and inspire others. The store has become an integral part of the surrounding neighborhood with its incredible 6

shopping experience and community involvment. Bringing joy and magic to others is their mission. Though diamonds, gold and gemstones sparkle in their glass enclosures, the real magic at Star Jewelers is found in the hearts of the owner and staff who

Here’s what our customers have to say about PermaSeal U.S.A. Preserve Your Investment We wanted to write you to express how satisfied we are with your product, service and the crew. We built our house 3 years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great. Unfortunately, it only looked good for about 6 months and we knew we had to do something to protect our investment, we were not too excited about the prospect of having to stain our deck, at least once a year, to maintain it. Thank God for Permaseal, your team came out, cleaned the deck and permanently sealed the deck with the penetrating sealant. Now it looks just like the day we moved in and we do not have to stain it, unless we want

a different color than the natural wood look. Further, cleaning it is a breeze, no need to power wash it, simply hose it down. We are so happy to know we have protected our investment for at least 25 years and we have just scheduled your team to come out and permanently seal our drive way as well. We can highly recommend Permaseal to everyone that is looking for a permanent solution, peace of mind. The whole thing was a very pleasurable experience. From the initial visit, where you thoroughly explained the entire process, with no sales pressure. To the polite, punctual and professional crew that came and did the work. Thank you again for helping us preserve our investment.

Sincerely, Jenny & Ed

We value our customers and appreciate the opportunity to provide professional services as the department continues to expand,” says David. “We stock most major tire brands and extend a pricematch guarantee on any tire purchased. If we don’t have the tires you want, we can have them here in one day.” David loves the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping with his wife of 29 years. They have four kids and seven grandchildren. He is outgoing and loves to laugh. When you bring your vehicle to the service department you’ll get the standard visual vehicle inspection. The Gift of a Lifetime BY MACY GOODNIGHT

T

he gift of jewelry is timeless and valued beyond its weight in gold. For centuries, people have communicated sentiment with symbolic gestures given in the form of precious metals and gemstones. J. David Jewelry embraces this tradition like no other, with an understanding of the intrinsic value of the gift as an expression of emotion and communication. Founders, Joel and Kendra Wiland opened their first jewelry store in Broken Arrow in 1994. Since then, they have established the J. David brand as distinguished, elegant, and reputable, with two locations to serve their customers with honesty and integrity. “I’m in the love business!” proclaimed Joel. “We don’t just sell jewelry. We sell an object that represents something, whether it’s love, success, or gratitude; every piece of jewelry has meaning and tells a story.” Giving the gift of jewelry sends a clear message about the affections people share. “We offer one of the most emotional products one can give,” he said. “This is going to be an item that is going to last the rest of your life and be passed down to generations to come.” Diamonds and gemstones speak volumes when given, no matter the occasion. Mindful of the meaningful nature of the gift of jewelry, J. David makes the purchase experience as helpful and accessible as possible for anyone. “We are not sales people,” Joel said, “but client advocates on a quest to

best fulfill a need.” Customers will never find a “sale” at either of the two store locations, because they will always have the lowest price without mark ups. “It’s a different way of doing business,” said Joel. “We maintain consistency in our pricing. When there’s always a sale elsewhere, there’s always a mark-up.” Some of the popular jewelry designers that can be found in store are Gabriel, Vahan, Galatea, William Henry, and Michou; however, it is the J. David overall brand that is famous for the impeccable quality and reasonable pricing they offer. Each location provides full manufacturing of custom jewelry with a professional jeweler onsite. With the jewelry industry being one of the oldest industries in the world, the store’s jewelers offer wisdom of traditional techniques as well as progressive design concepts. Customers will also find that the manufacturers offer cutting edge technology in custom pieces with the use of 3D printing. “We can show jewelry before it’s created,” said Joel, “taking the unknown out of the equation of what the piece will look and feel like.” The use of 3D technology can also make the experience of custom orders more cost effective and affordable. Clients can view a holographic image of the jewelry creation before it exists, and gain insight into what the piece will look like once it is completed. Once the custom jewelry piece is finished, the store offers a satisfaction

BROKEN ARROW DECEMBER 2018

guarantee. “This takes any worry out of the purchase,” said Joel. “We will make sure that you are 100% happy with your purchase, and that it is the perfect gift.” For the holiday season, J. David is increasing the accessibility of one of their biggest holiday sellers diamond stud earrings. “Diamond studs are the #1 staple in a woman’s wardrobe,” said Joel. “They go with everything.” The store will offer 60 months no interest financing to ensure that purchasing diamond earrings is easy and affordable, as it is the perfect gift. For men, there is a large selection of gift ideas, including men’s jewelry, watches, money and tie clips, and elegant knives. “Our knives are like pocket jewelry,” said Joel. Not only is it a functional gift, but each of them is signed, numbered, and completely unique.” With 31 years in the industry, Joel says he feels he has never worked a day in his life. Joel and Kendra feel fortunate to have developed so many relationships with their customers over the years. Joel said, “It’s precious to be a part of the special moments people celebrate together, and there’s no amount of money to put on the value of that.”

COLLINSVILLE HOSTING THIRD ANNUAL

“Hometown Christmas” VARIETY SHOW

BY MEGAN EDWARDS

A

Branson-style variety show is coming to quaint, downtown Collinsville for its third consecutive year. Hometown Christmas is a Dickensian-themed variety show lasting about two hours, with over 80 performers to entertain you with holiday songs and dances. Located at the historic Herron’s Crown Opry Theater, this show promises to bring you an evening you will always remember and is a great way to celebrate Christmas with the entire family! Why Hometown Christmas? This holiday tradition started, as most do, with one person. Rachel Chronister had the vision to bring a variety show to Collinsville that would not only entertain, but also give back. Chronister’s dream became a reality in 2016 when Hometown Christmas premiered to a packed house. All proceeds from ticket sales go directly to three of Collinsville’s

nonprofit organizations that do so much to help people in the community and in surrounding areas: Arubah Community Clinic, Dividing Bread Ministry, and Main Street Ministries Mission. Arubah Community Clinic provides free health care services to uninsured and underinsured. Dividing Bread Ministry supports underprivileged women and children by providing basic necessities such as food and clothing. Main Street Ministries Mission provides a system of caring for the needs of families, both with necessities and faith-based ministry. Together, these three organizations work to support local people in their time of need and helping to fund these organizations is the heart of Hometown Christmas. There will be three performances this year: Friday, December 14 at 7:00 pm and Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Tickets may be

purchased online anytime by visiting collinsvillehometownchristmas. ticketleap.com; or in person Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Collinsville Chamber of Commerce, located at 1126 W Main Street. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children. Seating is limited to 300 per performance and tickets are selling quickly, so purchase your tickets early! Generous sponsors help to cover the cost of the performances so that ticket sales can go directly to the nonprofits. Hometown Christmas would like to thank this year’s sponsors: Grand River Dam Authority, Collinsville Energy, American Bank of Oklahoma, Herron’s Crown Opry Theater, Darling Ingredients, Collinsville Collision Center, Bigfoot Prints, Kids Academy, Hometown Insurance Agency, Collinsville Dolton Funeral Home, Cyn-Pro Graphics, El Jalapeno Grill, Mayor Bud York, and Wanda Sanders. NEW YEAR’S EVE

Party Planning Ideas

BY TOM FINK

W

ith the final days of 2018 now upon us and 2019 fast-approaching, many people are considering how they’re going to ring in the New Year. Just because you may not be able to make it to the Times Square Ball Drop on the last day of the outgoing year doesn’t mean you can’t have a celebration of your own that will be memorable long into the New Year. Whether this will be your first year to put together a New Year’s party or you’re a party-planning veteran, it never hurts to consider something new for your endof-the-year soiree. While any New Year’s get-together is an inherently celebratory affair, you can make it even more festive by picking out a special theme for the evening. Choosing the right theme can set the tone for the night, and on a night with friends and family gathered to reflect

on old memories while looking forward to crafting new ones, your party’s theme should match this sentiment from start to finish. The following suggestions might help you select the theme that best suits your evening and provide a few guidelines for the occasion.

Getting Started

To help prevent potential frustration and save yourself time, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when deciding on a party theme. Everything from choosing the right concept and setting a budget, to finding invitations can determine the success and fun of your party. Be sure to choose a party theme that excites you, as you’re the one who will be the host or hostess. Being enthusiastic about your theme will definitely help increase the “party” in your party planning.

Some possible themes could include:

Wellness Party

Focus on New Year’s resolutions by hosting a wellness party. Family and friends can eat healthy bites and partake in activities to promote mental and physical health. Whether you plan to teach a few yoga moves or send guests off with healthy recipes, this can be an unexpected and productive way to ring in the New Year.

Family Pajama Party

Grab the popcorn and a few of your favorite movies for the evening. You’ve likely been gifted with or already own a pair of PJ’s, so hosting a cozy pajama party can be a fun evening in. Set up a fun snack bar and set blankets aside for a relaxing countdown with loved ones. (continued on next page)

Backyard Bonfire

Although it’ll likely be chilly outside, you can still take the party outdoors with a backyard bonfire. You can prepare a small dessert bar with hot chocolate and s’mores. In addition to keeping the fire going, you should have a few blankets and pillows on hand to keep the guests warm and comfy.

More Ideas

Other themes for the evening can include hosting a masquerade party; a “Decade Party,” with a fun evening of flashing back to the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or other decade of your choice, with period-appropriate karaoke to liven up the evening; a “Black Light Party” (also called a Glow Party), switching out your regular light bulbs with black lights for a unique and colorful evening; or a Western New Year’s Eve party, inviting attendees to break out their cowboy boots and 10-gallon hats. Depending on your theme, you may want to include a playlist for the evening to have music in the background. For example, a Decade Party would include music predominantly from the era tied to the evening’s theme. A 50s party would include music from Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, Bill Haley, Chubby Checker, Nat King Cole, the Drifters, and the like. An 80s-themed party would include a playlist that had songs by Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, Flock of Seagulls, Queen, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Tears for Fears, and others. A Western-themed N New Year’s Eve party may include b both classic and contemporary co country songs from Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Hank Williams Sr., George Strait, Brad Paisley, Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and others. Regardless of your theme, any New 36 |

BROKEN ARROW DECEMBER 2018

Year’s Eve party’s decor should include balloons and signage, decorations (metallic decorations always add more to the look of any party), noisemakers, hats, and New Year’s Eve-themed props such as paper glasses, top hats, and masquerade masks. Find themed decorations that are unique to your guest’s sensibilities, and your party style. Since the evening will be about making your theme entertaining, you should start looking for themed decorations and/or planning out DIY projects as soon as possible.

Guest List

Once you’ve settled on a theme, make a guest list. Write down who you’re wanting to invite, so you can get a working idea of the size of the party, along with how many invitations you’ll need to order. This will keep you organized and on track with what you need to buy. Send party invitations out at least three weeks in advance. Choose invitations that match your theme (if possible) and send them early, so that your guests can RSVP during the busy holiday season. Don’t forget to include the important information about the dress code (smart casual, cocktail, lounge suit, black tie, white tie). Consider a similar invitation card style to your New Year’s cards for continuity. Note: While sending out invitations by email may an economic alternative to ordering invitations, the latter will give your party guests a keepsake for years to come.

Location

Select a space to host the party, one that’s big enough to accommodate your guests. With a theme in mind and a guest list, you can decide if you want to have your party at a venue or at your own home or apartment. Should you be looking for a more intimate

get-together with family and friends, you might opt to host the party at your home to help save money. Should you be expecting more than 50 guests, you should research affordable venues near you and which are easy to access, keeping in mind the needs of your guests, should any of them require special accommodations.

Budget

Settle on a budget for food and drinks. Once you have your theme, guest list, and invitations taken care of, you can set a budget to cover your party’s necessities. Since this is New Year’s Eve, you’ll want to offer a nice selection of drinks and serve foods that aren’t over-complicated to make and easy for your partygoers to consume. Regardless of whether or you’re serving alcoholic beverages, it’s a great idea to set up a special drink bar. You can personalize the bar area with drink recipes, fun sayings, and drink addins. You can also offer a water bar with different fresh fruits to keep your guests hydrated. Remember, if you’re going to be serving alcoholic beverages, be sure those traveling by car have a designated driver for the evening.

Menu & Games

For the menu, your guests have probably had their fill of heavy foods during Thanksgiving and Christmas, so finger foods and small bites are ideal for any New Year’s Eve party. Easy-to-create foods make less of a mess and help you to spend less time in the kitchen. Some New Year’s Eve bites would include sliders, stuffed mushrooms, spinach dip, lobster mac and cheese cups, roasted vegetable skewers, fruit skewers, fried or marinated olives, smoked salmon pinwheels, panko crusted

hrimp chicken bites, oysters, shrimp d tortilla cocktail, guacamole and er. chips and a cheese platter. For fun, host games or activities ut not so that are entertaining but our guests time-consuming that your will feel like they don’t have the chance to mingle with other partygoers. One or two short games nd to give are good to have in mind ties and your guests some activities its. Ideal keep them in good spirits. sion would games for such an occasion include Pictionary, or making a ts game out of guessing your guest’s New Year’s resolutions. Give ave guestss partygoers cards and have finish the sentences with hopefull wishes, or tongue-in-cheekk ds, read d comments. Gather the cards, et the them aloud randomly, and let group try to figure out who wrote what. Print off cards with thesee fillin-the-blanks: • My top resolution for the New Year _ is to: ________________________ • The bad habit that I want to kick this year is: ___________________ • The good deed I want to do this year is: ______________________ • The person I want to be more like this year is: ___________________ • The skill I want to learn this year is: ____________________________ With the right games, food, friends and family, your New Year’s Eve get-together can come together to create lasting new memories and good times for all your of guests, starting their New Year in the best way possible.

The manner hypnosis is typically shown in movies, television and media is far from reality. It’s often portrayed as somewhere between magic and mysticism, but is actually neither. Hypnotherapy is largely accepted today as effective treatment by progressive hospitals and medical providers. “It has taken centuries for medical hypnosis to regain credibility,” says Penn State psychology professor William Ray. “In the 1950s, reliable measures of hypnotizability were developed, which allowed this research field to gain validity. We’ve seen more than 12,000 articles on hypnosis published since then in medical and psychological journals. Today, there’s general agreement that hypnosis can be an important part of treatment for some conditions, including phobias, addictions and chronic pain.” From an article in the New York Times, “Numerous scientific studies have emerged in recent years showing that the hypnotized mind can exert a real and powerful effect on the body. The new finds are leading major hospital to try hypnosis to relieve pain and speed recovery in a variety of illnesses”. Dr. David Spiegel, a Stanford professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford said, “I see hypnosis as a kind of app you haven’t used on your cellphone,” he said. “It’s got all kinds of capacity that people are just figuring out how to use, but if you haven’t used it, the phone doesn’t do that.” For more information, contact Browning Clinical Hypnotherapy in Tulsa at 918-990-0144 or go to www.browninghypnotherapy.com.
